The Sin of Laziness at Work

Scripture:
Proverbs 18:9 — “Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.”

Devotional:
We often view laziness as a minor flaw, but Scripture speaks of it seriously. Being “slack” in your work is compared to participating in destruction. When responsibilities are neglected—whether through distraction, procrastination, or indifference—others can be harmed: teams fall behind, customers suffer, workloads shift unfairly, and trust is broken.

In a fallen world, your heart might swing between overwork and underwork. Laziness can hide behind excuses, spiritual language (“I’m just waiting on the Lord”), or blame-shifting. But followers of Christ are called to diligence, not drudgery—to wholehearted work, not half-hearted effort.

This isn’t about becoming a workaholic; it’s about honoring God with focused, reliable effort. Work is one of the places you live out love for neighbor. When you take your role seriously, you are loving the people who depend on you.

Are there areas where you’ve been “slack” in your work—putting off responsibilities or giving minimal effort?
How might your current level of effort be affecting others around you?
What is one practical way you can grow in diligence this week?

Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for times I’ve treated my work carelessly. Renew my desire to serve You and others through diligent effort. Help me work with focus, reliability, and love. Amen.
