Welcome And Why Beginnings Matter

SPEAKER_00

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in the Word. I'm Ronnie Cooksie. Thank you for being with us on day one. The very first verse in the Bible says this. The first line in a play, the first note of a song, the first play of the game, and the first sentence in a book, they all set the tone for what follows. And so it is with God's word. With ten words, God establishes the truths that will govern the remaining seven hundred and eighty-two thousand eight hundred and fifteen words.

God Exists Before All Things

SPEAKER_00

In the beginning tells us several things. First, that God was there before the beginning. Wait, I thought the beginning was the beginning. Not with God. He has existed from eternity past and he will exist for eternity future. He has to have been there before the beginning to be God, or else something would have had to create him. No, he was there before the beginning. That means he's greater than everything that comes after. It also tells us that the beginning happened because of God. He is the one that began the beginning. In the beginning, God. Who was in the beginning? God was there.

The Trinity In Genesis 1:1

SPEAKER_00

The Hebrew word that God uses for himself here is the one that points to his creative ability. But the Hebrew word here is also in the plural. Wait a minute, I thought it was one God. It is. But the Bible teaches us that He is a Trinitarian God. We speak of the Trinity. He is Father, Son, and Spirit simultaneously three expressions of one God.

Creation From Nothing And Its Scope

SPEAKER_00

In the beginning, God created. Now that phrase says more than volumes of books could attempt to explain. There were no materials in existence that God could use to create, so he spoke it all into existence. Now I can make a few things, but I certainly need materials and tools, but not God. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. This provides the scope of God's creation. Every single thing, every molecule, every at everything that we have discovered in all of the universe, in any galaxy, He spoke into existence. That's incredible. In the New Testament, we read in the book of Colossians that not only did He create everything, but in Him all things hold together. Everything that has taken place since God created the heavens and the earth is under God's control and God's power. You, the people around you, your possessions, your food, every single element of your life.

What Genesis 1:1 Means For You

SPEAKER_00

Well, what does it mean for us today? Well, if you don't know him as your Savior, you need to do that. Because if God was here before the beginning, he'll be here when it's all over, and we will stand before him. Now the fact that you can't get away from him is supposed to be good news. And it is if you'll turn to him, admit that you've sinned against him, which we all have, realize and tell him that you believe that he died in your place on the cross, and ask him to forgive you, and live forever in your heart, and then you can live the rest of your days enjoying a relationship with the Creator God. If you do know him as your Savior, it means so much every day to know that God has surrounded you with his loving, creative hands. Every second of your life is in his hands. Every direction you turn your head, you are looking at people and things that God has created. So go to him right now in prayer. Give him every part of your life. Thank him that he cared so much to create a beautiful earth, to create you, and to create every part of the life with which he has blessed you. Tell it all to God, tell him your struggles, and then let this truth today of Genesis 1 1 be an encouragement to you today as you live with the God who was before the beginning, who has created all things, who controls all things, and then even though he is so vast and massive and all-encompassing, he allows you to know him and he cares about every little detail in your life.
