We are recording.
SPEAKER_00Okay, today's episode title is The Many Roles of a Woman Staying Rooted Through It All. So welcome back to Planet by the Word. I'm your host, Barbara Wallace, and today's episode is very special. We're celebrating Mother's Day, but not just the title of a mother. We're honoring the women behind the role. The mother who is a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, an aunt, a grandmother, and still trying to stay connected to God through it all. And I have the pleasure of a beautiful guest with me today who is truly represents that. So today I will be joined by a wonderful woman of strength, grace, deep faith. She wears many hats. She's a mother, she's a wife, she's a sister, she's a daughter, she's an aunt, and she's a grandmother. But above all, she's a true Christ follower. She knows what it means to give, to carry, and to keep showing up, even during the hard times. And today she's here to share with us her heart. And I want everyone to be excited. We're going to welcome LaToya, Latoya Hayes. I welcome you to this podcast. Thank you for being my guest today for this special Mother's Day celebration.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for having me. Thank you. Thank you. Awesome. I'll give a little bit more about myself. Well, not even a little more, just reiterate what you said. Yes, I am LaToya. I'm a mother of four daughters. Okay. No sons. I'm a wife, of course. I am a woman of God. I'm continually learning what it means to walk with God through everything, through anything. My days are full. My house is full. Okay. And um, my heart is just really focused on growing in the faith and showing up, showing up for my family with love and with patience and with kindness and just um especially in that role as a mother, which is our topic, which is our topic today.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it is. And before we dig any deeper into this, we could just say a little prayer because we have to honor God and everything that we do. Dear precious Jesus, in your mighty name, we thank you for this day. We thank you for this platform. We thank you for life, and we thank you for who you are. We do come before you, humble as we know how, asking you, Father God, to forgive us of any unrighteousness, any things that we may have said or done, Father God. But we pray that whoever may be listening to this podcast, whoever may be getting in spirit, inspired by this, that they be encouraged, and that Jesus is always with you. And we thank you for this opportunity. We give you all the glory and the honor and the praise in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Amen. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for that wonderful introduction of who you are. We now have a little bit to know who you are out of your roles. Which one strengthens you, stretches you the most right now?
SPEAKER_01Right now, I would say that motherhood stretches me. Stretches me the most, you know. And it's just because this being a mother, it literally pushes you to rely on God daily, okay? Sometimes by the minute. You know, literally, but you can see what's going to happen based on your past experiences, you know. So of course you want to tell your children there's a hole right there. You know what I'm saying? Don't go down that road, you know, turn in the other direction. Um, but you know, hey, these are their lives to live. Yes, we can impart all of the wisdom and the guidance that the Lord has given us onto them. However, we are not in control of their lives, they are responsible for their own decisions, and so um, I do need the wisdom, I do need the patience, I do need the humility beyond what is my own strength. And for that, I just I depend on the Lord. And so in this season, that's what's stretching me.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, and that's real, you know, for Christian women as we are, and I think a lot of women feel that pressure of trying to show up fully for every area, especially when it comes to our children, and we know that they're need what their needs are, and we know, okay, we've been there, we've done that, and but because it's their lives, we know that they have to, you know, go through it. But we are in the background praying for them to make the decisions of where they are. So awesome. Thank you for that. Um, let's continue about you know, real struggles. Um, let me ask you this: have you ever felt that you were going, giving too much of yourself to everyone else, but you had nothing left for yourself?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, yes. Many women, specifically mothers, have had those times. I've definitely had seasons where um you're pouring out, pouring out, pouring out, and then next thing you know, you're empty, you know. And so what I've learned through those seasons is that um you can't give a place to be depleted for a long time, you know, because we have to remember we're connected to God, He is our source, and remember, He's He's eternal, He's never gonna run out. Yes, so in the giving, there has to be giving and there has to be filling up, you know. So while you're giving, while you're depleting, you have to be putting that word in, you have to be praying, you have to sometimes say no, you know, it's a complete sentence. You can say no, listen, my cup is full, my cup is running over, you know. I can't do anything else. So I go to God because He is the one that refills me, you know. That's where my grounding is. So if I can stay where I'm grounded, where I'm planted, you know, that soil needs water, that soil, you know, needs food, and that food comes from what we've learned is our word. And so I think um I'm able to show up um once I'm filled. Oh, yeah, instead of being exhausted, you know, I can actually have peace, you know, even when I'm tired, you know. Oh, true. Even when you have had a long busy day, you can't show up, you know, with that peace because you have had a feeling as well. So we gotta remind ourselves, don't let yourself get empty.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, true. True. As everyone say, T, T. And that's that's right. And I know someone really needed to hear that. A lot of times we we just crucify our own selves thinking, as women, as mothers, you know what, I'm filming bad. We batter ourselves if I wanted to do more, I wish I could do, if I had the opportunity, I'm I'm unable to give to you at this moment and thinking we're we're just having our children to be ashamed of us. But they're further from that. They don't they're not ashamed of you, they love you unconditionally. But it's in our head that we be thinking more of it. It's like I don't want to disappoint my child, I don't want my child to feel as if, you know what, I'm unable to give them guidance. But regardless of what we do, we know that by the grace of God and by his word in us, that we have to listen to the word and follow where he leads us to do. And that's the best thing as a mother, knowing that you love Christ and knowing that you can be an example through hard times, because it's many times children have told me, Mom, if it wasn't for your praying and your faith, I wouldn't think that my faith would be as strong as you. So that's definitely, you know, a good thing. So, um, what does a hard day look like for you? Like a real unfiltered day.
SPEAKER_01A hard day is me usually trying to jol a lot of things at once, right? Because we're women, we're mothers, and I think women are kind of like natural uh multitaskers, you know, and you think I and I think you think you can do more than you can actually do. But since we can kind of do things, um, do more more than one thing at once, you know. My husband is very focused driven, you know, when he has a duty, he's gonna do it to the full, he's gonna get it done, right? But um, I just feel like I can do this, I can do that, and I think that's a that's a difference, you know, uh maybe a gender difference. But um, as a mama for there's always something that needs your attention. There's always something that needs my attention. There's always somebody that maybe needs me to listen, somebody that needs me to talk, somebody may need to ride, somebody needs me to pick, you know, pick them up. Um, and sometimes it somebody could be sick, you know. Just somebody needing something all at one time. And you can feel yourself being stretched, you know, stretched like a rubber band, or stretched, you know, just thinner and thinner and thinner. Okay. But but I will tell you that I do have an answer for that. Because in the and it when when that happens, you know, you gotta, I have to stop, you know. I have to stop. And just because you know, as a mom, you you don't want to let your kids down. You don't want to let you don't want to let anybody down, especially when you've said, I'm gonna do something, I'm gonna be there, or I can do that, or when they need you, because you never know when it's gonna be like that conversation or that time where that they're gonna remember forever. You know, it'll be like, you know, I've I needed to speak to you, or you know, I needed you, and you weren't there for me, you know. So you do want to be there for everything, and you don't want to miss those moments, you know, those particular moments. So it can kind of feel like you're running, you know, to and fro, but you draw you have to have a heart check at that time, and you just go back, okay. I can only do one thing at a time. You know, there's an African proverbs, how do you eat an elephant one bite at a time? So you kind of just remind, you know, yourself, okay. Task, okay. This is priority, this can wait, this needs to go here, this this can do that. But we then there's this the scripture, you know, when I'm weak, he's strong. Exactly. You know, so then you go back to where your strength comes from, where your help comes from.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And it comes from it comes from the Lord. So absolutely. Thank you for your honesty because that's the part that people always, you know, they don't see that part. You know, they think as if it's uh uh a button you press and you are an automatic, and that your battery will never uncharge, that you just keep going, be the energizer bunny that keeps going on and on and on. It's not like that. There's real lives, real situations, and there's circumstances behind all of that. So, exactly. Your day continues, but you gotta know when to like cut it. Like, that's it. I'm done for that. Yes, yes, yes. So, uh, were there ever a moment where you felt spiritually disconnected from God?
SPEAKER_01Yes, I have definitely felt spiritually disconnected, spiritual disconnection. I don't think it always has to be like dramatic, you know, or some cinematic, you know, thing where you know how you know how those comedy movies where it's just like everything that can go wrong has gone wrong, and it just gets to the point where it's just laughable. Well, I don't think it has to be that dramatic. I actually think it's very subtle, you know. So it's just life is busy, my time with the Lord becomes less and less or uh more inconsistent. Um, I'm relying on me, you know, to get something done. I'm forgetting to, you know, pray. Um thinking that I can do you know everything in my own strength, forgetting that connection with Jesus, who is the source of our strength, you know. And um it comes from being distracted, you know. Maybe I maybe I I'm supposed to be reading my word or maybe I even have my Bible open, okay? But I'm not thinking about it, I'm thinking about this other task, you know, that I've done. That's a spiritual disconnection because you know, when I'm in the word, and if I'm not reading, and if I'm not, if I can't hear it, and if I can't see it, then it can't work for me, you know. So I think it comes, you know, by distracting. I think it comes when I'm worried. Worrying, when I'm worrying, because if I'm worrying, that means that my focus isn't on God. So I think that's a spiritual disconnection, or just losing the intentionality of having that relationship with the Lord, you know, because I think that's what we need. We have to be intentional, and if you're disconnected, your intentions are on some there somewhere else, and they're not on, you know, the Lord who you know is like I said, or like the word says, your source, the source of your strength, you know.
SPEAKER_00So what what helps you find your way back?
SPEAKER_01So remembering that the disconnection is not because the Lord left me. Okay, it's because I left him or I stopped doing those practices that causes me, you know, to be close to him. Like my life got busy, you know, my focus shifted. So when that happens, I just remind myself he was always there. That's probably the one who has to get back. I gotta get back to him, you know. So I just return to reading my word, I'm returning to praying, um, you know, asking him, you know, because that's the daily things that you that, you know, I do, or I was gonna say we do as Christians, but I don't know, maybe everybody doesn't do it. But you know how when you can just be walking, you can maybe walk outside and and feel the sun or or see something that and you're just like, man, Lord, look what you created. You know, I you know, you do so I just do that, you know, just get back to doing what kept me, you know, close to him.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely because sometimes we think that we have to come back perfectly, but God just wants us to come back. He wants to remember and reflect that he's always Lord of Lord, he's king of king, he's Alpha and the Omega. So anything that we need out of Christ is there, you know. Psalms 23, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. A lot of times we forget that God does not allow us to lack anything because he's all that we need and all that we want. And we just gotta remember, like you said, take the time off, time out to slow down and remember that you know God got my back. He's he's with me. I just have to turn my face back to him and and just diligently seek after him, just a small you know, step of remembering and and recognizing that God, you are all in all. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I love that. So, regarding your your daily walk with God, what does your relationship with God looks like now in the middle of everything you carry?
SPEAKER_01So, my relationship with God is very intentional. It is integrated in everything that I do. We even with all my responsibilities, I have learned that it's not always um a long, maybe drawn out prayer, uh, or you know how you have, you know, how you'll book things. Oh, this hour I gotta do this, this hour, I have to do that. It's not perfect. It sometimes is not planned, not planned in the fact we're from 242 to you know what I'm saying, to 342. You know what I'm saying? Check, check. Right, but it is planned in the way that I know that this, you know, I know that this has to get done as far as prayer and time with the Lord Jesus Christ. You know what I mean? Absolutely. It's uh because that's how I stay connected with him. So we do those tiny little micro connections, you know, where we're like checking in, hey God, did you see that? Oh Lord, I heard that. You know what I'm saying? Exactly, Lord, was that you, you know, or you know, you know, like those those kind of little things. It's prayer, it's praying. And I like to, you know how when somebody says, Oh girl, pray for me or pray for this, my family got this going on, and then you know, you say, Oh, yes, I'm gonna be praying for you. I like to pray right then. Oh, because I don't want to forget. I don't want to forget, I don't want to be like, oh man, so-and-so asked me to pray for them the other day. So I want to pray right then, but then I do want to pray later as well, because maybe it's something where I need to, you know, get with my family and be like, hey, y'all, we need to be praying for this because this particular thing is going on in our family, or the enemy is really trying to, you know, attack our family in this way. So we need to actually, you know, be together and in agreement, you know, on this prayer, but in the meantime, just like saying little prayers throughout the day, um, talking to him as I'm going along my day, you know, thanking him that I'm able to do certain things because you can be reminded from maybe a time where you couldn't do do these little things, you know what I mean? Oh yeah, your arm is down, your leg is down, whatever, or you know, you can't speak, whatever it is, just thanking him, being mindful, like Lord, I surrender, and I know that a lot is on my plate, but I know I'm not doing it by myself. Absolutely, exactly. I know that it's through you. So I just, you know, so just those little things, just acknowledging him, reminding him that I remember what the word said, I remember him in my life, and just you know, being thankful and you know, appreciating, appreciating the Lord and verbalizing it, you know, with my words and my prayers.
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely. My nephew called me the other day and it went to voicemail and he says, you know, Auntie, can you uh pray for me for whatever the situation was? And so I immediately took out the phone and I recorded my prayer for him. I said, So this way, he got that prayer instantly because he wanted it. And like he said, later on today, I can pray for him even more so. But he texts me back, he says, Oh, I needed that. Thank you so much. You know, being an aunt, you know, they they know that you, especially if they know that you love the Lord, that you pray. They'll call you when they're going on trips. Before I leave, Auntie, we all in the car, we're ready to go. Can you pray for our journey? And it it it says a lot about who you are as a woman of God, that folks are just saying, okay, I know that God is, you know, linked up to you. So you can get a prayer cross. Let me let me plug into you, or you plug into God because He's always hearing and answering. So exactly, that is so true. So, how do you you stay?
SPEAKER_01Go ahead. I was gonna just say this real quickly, but Pastor will say, you know, how so your nephew called you, and um, because they were going on a trip. Well, I remember Pastor saying one time, we should always be praying like we pray when we get on the plane. You know, because we for some reason, either before you get on that plane or when you get on there, you like Lord.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, we pray big time then. Big time. We be praying them powerful prayers.
unknownRight, right, right.
SPEAKER_00You know the Lord Jesus. We we we put it on out there. Almighty God Jesus, my father, my savior. Yeah, he has a long name when you bring on that plane. He's not just Jesus. We're using all the names. You're not just Jesus, my holy Jesus Father. We know who you are. We go in, but you're right. Absolutely right. That's too funny, but you're absolutely right. So how do you how do you stay connected when you get um when your life gets overwhelming? And I know we talked about, you touched about there's so much going on, people trying to pull you in different directions, but you as La Toya, how do you connect to God when life gets overwhelming? Is you're being pulled in so many different directions, like stretch Armstrong, like that toy we used to have.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes. So what I'll say is that life has taught me patterns. Right, so there have definitely been times where when things get hard, you kind of run away from the Lord, you know, and you kind of decide. Oh, I don't even know if it's the conscious decision, but what you start doing is doing things in your own strength, right? So since I know I have that pattern, yes. So since I know I have that pattern, when life gets um overwhelming, I learned not to disconnect. You know what I'm saying? To not let that happen, but to lean in. So what it looks like is a quick prayer, right? So as soon as that comes, or you feel that feeling of, you know, because you know it's piling up, right? So you can feel that overwhelming feeling kind of come on. So I'm gonna say a prayer. I'm gonna remind myself that God is with me even in this moment, right? You know, and it's not about stepping away from him. Um that's when I'm gonna say, Lord, I need you. You know, that's when I need him the most. And I'll even say, Okay, Lord, I'm feeling that feeling of overwhelm. That means I'm getting weak. I need your strength, you know. Be my be my strength, you know. So I think we have to recognize our own patterns and do what we can to not let that same, you know, history, you know, repeat itself. So I don't want that disconnection. I want to be connected. So I want to, when I feel that kind of pulling away, I want to lean in so that I don't lose, you know, lose that connection with God. So I'm immediately gonna start praying. I'm immediately gonna be, you know, going online, you know, or going, you know, okay, what scripture do I need? You know, and I'm like putting this in what scripture, you know, I'm getting my Bible so I can go right to that scripture and use it, you know, for my edification, you know.
SPEAKER_00I love that because it shows it doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to be real. And when you lose the realness, you're going through emotions, it doesn't get you anywhere. Um, so that that is true. And I I love that answer. It's awesome, awesome, awesome. So, what I what I want you to do right now is speak directly to women listening right now. Um, the one who feels tired, they're overwhelmed, maybe even distant from God. What would you say to her at this very moment? Because this platform will reach so many different women that at a different stage in life. But they know who God is and they love God, but they're there.
SPEAKER_01I would say you are not alone in this feeling. All of us, most of us, have been, you know, in that place where we have, you know, felt alone or felt like we were distant from God. And I think that feeling is a gift because you know what? That feeling, if you know that you are you feel distant from God, then you know what to do to get yourself back to Him. The word says, draw on draw nigh unto God, and He will draw nigh unto you.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01So guess what you need to do? You need to be praying, you need to pull out your Bible, and it don't have to be anything long. I think it can be one, two, Lord, I need you. Yes. You know what I'm saying? Four words. That's four words. Lord, I need you, Lord. You know, please hear me.
SPEAKER_00You know you have me counting, Lord. I need you.
SPEAKER_01You know what I'm saying? You know, because it's you know, we think we have to do something big, you know, grandiose, you know, kind of no, you better get back to the basics. Yes, Lord, I need you. Forgive me. Yes, you know, help me with my unbelief. You know, I've forgotten you, you know. I think honesty um and repentance goes a long way with the Lord, and then we turn around and we start doing those things that got us back close to him. So that's what I would say. Just stop right now. Whoever that woman is, I would say stop right now and just say, Lord, I need you. Yeah, help me, forgive me, you know, right now. Just start one scripture. Pull out, I don't care what it is, just open up your Bible and read one sentence, whatever it is, because we know that his word is enough. You know, an honest prayer. An honest prayer is enough because the Lord is gonna meet you right there when you ask him to. You could you ask him to come in, he's there, you know. So just talk to him like he's there, and then move forward, you know. Don't go back to doing whatever it was you were doing or feeling however you were feeling. Remember, King Agrippa, think yourself happy. Yes, you know what I'm saying? So think differently, move differently, and read your word and pray, and you know, you're gonna get back. Things are gonna change. Remember, his word's never gonna return void. No, you're always gonna get some fruit from it.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Our God is the same today, yesterday, and forevermore.
SPEAKER_01Forevermore.
SPEAKER_00That that definitely was for someone, and that someone I I pray that they hear it and they take actions. It's one thing to hear it, but it's another thing to hear it and take action. So when you hear it, do it. And you know, do it in the prophecy of your own place. You don't have to have an audience to connect to God and tell him, Lord, I need you. You don't need to have anyone around you, he hears you wherever you are. So that is powerful, and and I pray that someone really take heed to what you just said. Thank you so much. Hallelujah. What was what has motherhood taught you about God?
SPEAKER_01Oh my goodness. Motherhood has taught me so much about God, God's heart, um, giving me a much deeper understanding of unconditional love, okay, of patience, of grace, which is unmerited, favor, unmerited, meaning I don't deserve it. I didn't do anything for it. The Lord just gave it to me. Yeah, you know what I mean? Um, and just so much more. Because you know, when I think of like, when I think of the word, right? So we're talking about what motherhood, what God is taught to me about motherhood, right? So I think of God's love. Remember how in the remember the bread and the stone? Yes, little little thing in the chicken. So that's love, you know what I mean? Is the Lord gonna give me a stone if I've asked for bread? That's uh that shows a loving relationship, you know. That shows that loving relationship, and I think that's the same loving relationship as a mother. I think it's a picture, you know, of how we should love our children, you know, as God loves us, you know, as his children, he's gonna make sure our needs are met. Oh you know, absolutely, absolutely, and that's extra, you know what I mean? We learn that there human beings have basic needs, you know, food, water, shelter, clothing. And so when you're talking about patience and love and grace, that's extra.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know what I'm saying? But it's extra that means so much, you know. So it just reminds me that God's love for us is so much greater. Oh, so much great, yes, it's so much greater. It's I'm talking about patience and unconditional love, but God loves me even more, you know? So it's new, it's God has made me feel real love. You know what I mean? It that's how I think that relationship shows me more or helps me to make it more tangible, the the God love, you know, because it's like a picture, right? A mother's love, motherhood. So I'm you know, loving your children is like a picture um that you can see, that you can touch, that you can, you know, feel of what um God's love is like.
SPEAKER_00So each child needs to be loved differently. So you have four children, each of those children need to be loved differently than the other one, but you still have the same love. You know, carrying them through the nine months it was one thing, but now that they're here, their character, the way that they walk, the way that they speak, the way they interact with you, is totally different. And that's how God is with everyone, all his children. We are all unique in our own way, but God finds a way to generally love us just as we are. So that means so much as being a mother to know, okay, I have to love this one a little different based on her needs, this one a little different based on her needs, and then you have some that may not even be asking for your love because they want to be independent, but your love is in the background and you're watching and you're praying and you're nurturing and you're supporting, you know. So it definitely does demonstrate how great God is, especially when it comes to his children. I agree, I agree. Awesome, awesome, awesome. So if someone is listening right now and knows that they need reset spiritually, what would you tell them?
SPEAKER_01Spiritual reset? I would say start small. Start small, start where you are. Everything does not have to be fixed at one time. You don't have to have a perfect plan. But what you do need to do is turn your heart back to God. Okay? Turn your heart back to God and just say, like I was telling you with the short prayers, God, I need you. Okay, God, I need you. Help me because we know words are powerful, right? Yes, the the Lord built this world with words, but they don't you don't have to say a lot of words, and even with the spiritual, you say you can you can say that. You can say, Lord, my spirit is this, Lord, my spirit is that, Lord, this is you know, this is what I've been doing, and he'll help you, you know. All we have to do is repent. Remember, we repent, which means you're gonna turn in the other direction, right? Right. So I would just say start small, repent, start with repentance, okay? Start with repentance and move on from there. And and repenting is easy because it's just saying what you've done, okay, and really turning around.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely. Love it, love it, love it, love it, love it. Now, before we close, would you be willing to pray for women who are listening today?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, absolutely. So I would just say, Father God, I thank you, God. I thank you for this time right here with another woman of God, Lord God. I thank you for mothers, Father. I thank you for children, Lord God. I want to pray right now for women who may have lost their moms or children who may have lost their moms, Lord. We know that mothers are gifts. Children's are gifts, they are gifts from you, Father. So we just thank you. We know that to walk with you, Lord God, is everything, Lord. It's a privilege, God, to walk with you, Lord, to have your word. You know, some people can't even read the word in peace. You know, there are wars going on over your word, Lord. But back to back to you, Father. We just thank you, we praise you, we worship you, Father God, as mothers, as wives, as daughters, Lord. In anything, we just want to put you first. You're gonna make us better. Your word makes us better mothers, yes, better daughters, Lord, better women, Father. So I just want to pray and just say, if I could leave the women with anything, I would say God's word first. Amen. Putting first in Jesus' name.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Amen. Amen. If this episode spoke to your heart and you want to know, we want you to know that you're not alone. And this is exactly why I created the rooted in 21-day faith reset. It helps you to reconnect with God and rebuild your spiritual strength one day at a time. So happy Mother's Day to everyone that's listening. You are seen, you are loved, you are stronger than you think, and this is planted by the word, and we will see you in the next episode. So we love you.
