So we give you glory, Lord, and we give you honor. In Jesus Christ's name, we all say amen. Amen. Amen. So today I want to welcome my guest. My guest is Carla Smith, and she is a lover of Christ, she's a mother of two boys, and it is my pleasure having her as a guest, and I welcome you to our podcast, Carla.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for having me. It's a pleasure and an honor to be here before the Lord God Almighty and to be a blessing to others.
SPEAKER_03Amen, amen, amen. So let's uh before I get into the question, um, tell me a little bit about you know you and your situation or anything that you want to share to us so our audience know just a little bit of information about who you are.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I am mother of two young adult men. One is on the autism spectrum disorder, and I'm definitely a lover of Christ, and they both are as well. And I am a lover of Christ, like I said before, and I say that with passion because that is my life. I love the Lord and I love serving Him.
SPEAKER_03Amen, amen, Amen. Thank you for that, because it's really important to know that you know we're speaking to women of God that know who God is and that love the Lord, despite of the situations that may be at hand and challenges that we face every day. So, my first question to you is can you share a little bit about your journey as a mother after you realize that your child had learning difficulties?
SPEAKER_01Yes, my journey as a mom was very challenging, very difficult, very hard. It was a hard place. It was one of the hardest places I've ever been in my life. I never thought I would be able to come out of that hard place. I can't do this, this couldn't be happening to me. What have I done? What a hard place it has been. And I just thank the Lord for taking me through that hard place because I wouldn't be as knowledgeable as I am today without Him taking me through it.
SPEAKER_03Bless the Lord, you know, um, and it's understandable that as you know a young mom with a child that has learning challenges that learn different differently than others, that you have to go through, you know, the trials and the tribulations with your child, and it at times will become difficult, you know, even raising young children without any learning, you know, challenges still is a challenge because they're still learning and they're still trying to grasp onto the things of life. So, yes, I can understand that exactly. So now during that season, you said that it was difficult times for you, and you realized you know that your child had you know learning challenges. What emotions did you experience during that time? Like the highs, the lows, the confusions, you know, is this, you know, is this real waking up, you know, different. What were the emotions that you went through? Can you elaborate on that for us?
SPEAKER_01My emotions were all levels. I was all over the place, couldn't stop crying for days and nights. And there were times I was afraid to be happy when there was a good little moment that something he did, but my emotions was taking over my life. Wow. And if I didn't have the Lord, my emotions would have probably taken me down completely. But because of the Lord Jesus Christ, I was able to take control because of his word, his word is what allowed me to be able to stand and continue and not let those emotions take over. But they were definitely really hard and just really was really taking over my life, just uncontrollable crying and wailing and just unbelievable.
SPEAKER_03Wow. And and you mentioned about you know the word and in Isaiah Isaiah 41 and 10, it says, Fear not, for I am with you. So I can imagine you know that scripture you turned to to know that you shouldn't fear because you know the Lord is with you. And you said that you trusted in God for everything because of the fact that you went through all these different emotions, especially you during that time when you were crying so much and that you were fearful about certain things. So I can see for someone or a woman that's going through this right now, where the word would definitely keep you encouraged. It doesn't stop the situation, but it does encourage you and probably calms your heart down a little bit than you know, normally someone that doesn't know who God is and doesn't get into their word because the word is everything to keep you standing on the most hardest situations that you're facing. Um, so thank you for um sharing that with us. Now, as a mother, and then I realize you do worry about how your child is treated. Um any examples that you know society had put in front of you to make you say, I need to shield my child? Any examples of how that when you know that occurred?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. There were many times where we would be somewhere in a store and we were unwelcomed, um, we had to leave the store, we basically got kicked out of places, um, or where they said, Isn't your child too old to be using a chewy toy? You know, but it's lack of understanding, they didn't understand why he needed it. And so there were other times where we just didn't go places, and there were places we did go, and I had to I had to be courageous in that, and you like you mentioned about the fear, and being courageous is overcoming that fear, even though you're fearful, you have to step out and let the Lord Jesus guide you through that. You cannot do it by yourself. And I tried, I did not want anyone to know what I was going through. There's embarrassment, you feel embarrassed all the time because of the things your child is doing, and again, your child has all these challenges and they're unaware, they're unaware, and you're the mom you have to step up in the name of Jesus because your child doesn't know how to help themselves.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely, absolutely, and I can see that you know, that as a parent with a child that learns differently than anyone else, and and that's how we're describing it right now. We're not going to say that it's a disability because it doesn't disable the child from doing things that life, you know, faces them at the present moment. So I'll say difficulties because the fact it's like when your child's trying to tie a shoe, that child can try as many times as they want, but you can see them trying to figure out with those two laces, twisting it into a knot, twirling it around and say, hey, I got it, and it's not it. And then we have to be encouraging for our child, you know, during that time. So I can just imagine for uh a child that has learning, you know, disorders and things like that, diagnosed with different diagnosis that say your child has, you know, on the spectrum and he has ADHD and he has autism and he has you know a little bit of this Down syndrome, maybe, and a little bit of that. So it seems like when the IEP comes back, they have like a long laundry list of what your child has. And you're probably sitting here wondering, this can't be right. Why do my child have all of this? But I'm I'm glad that the grace of God and his word kept you through those times, especially like you said, you being ridiculed when you're out in public and people don't want you or your child to be around. And I can just imagine the strength of God has to come up in you stronger because I can see at any given moment someone that doesn't trust the Lord or know the Lord or know who the Lord is lashing out at people, you know, and physically trying to hurt somebody because the average person's like, don't you dare talk about my child like this. I would have to slap you down. Absolutely. But because we we have God in us, we have to um show that that agape love. Yes, and like you said, they don't understand, and so when you don't have any understanding, you have a lack of understanding, then that's why you're gonna act the way you act out there as an adult treating you differently. And I just imagine it's like, oh, I don't even want to go places, but you know, that I can see that happening. Yes. Now you you touched on, you know, going through the fear. How did you navigate through that fear of judgment and the stigma that you you face when you were raising, you know, as you were raising this child with the learning challenges? How did you navigate through that? It wasn't easy.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01I thought that staying isolated was my way of you know, avoiding the fear, yeah, yeah, to deal with it. But again, you cannot navigate through the fear without the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart. You cannot do it. I tried, you cannot do anything without the Lord Jesus Christ, amen, amen.
SPEAKER_03Because then you're you like you said, you're you're just wandering around and you don't have a direction, but you can continue on with that.
SPEAKER_01Yes, no, that was very helpful. Thank you for that. Yes, so yes, but with with him, we can do all things. So, yes, with him, I was able to navigate because I I read his word, I prayed all the time, I studied his word, I sit in his presence, I seeked his face. Right, I was on my face seeking his face, and even in tears, right, I was reading my word, and that was how I was able to navigate through the fear because I knew he was gonna bring me through it.
SPEAKER_03That's that's awesome, and like you said, you know, the scripture, because he gave you strength, Philippians 4 and 13 says, Yes, I can do all things through Christ with strength is me. And so, you know, that's that scripture that you were referring to. Yes, you know, speaks volume in what you know you're going through or what some other mothers with that same situation they have to go through. But you have to lean and trust on the word of God through every step of the way. You can't do it by yourself because what you're gonna do is end up going around in a circle and circle like a maze that has no end. And after a while, you're gonna be so exhausted from just running around aimlessly without any direction, is that you're gonna tie yourself out, you're gonna burn yourself out, you're going to be lost, and that's no good for your child. Your child needs you to be strong. So the word of God keeps you strong in that situation. Like you said, getting down on your face and praying and being consecrated into the things of the Lord, and then studying his word diligently, knowing that, you know, Lord, your word says that I can seek you. Seek you first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all things will be added unto me. So that's another good scripture that talks about, you know, how the goodness of the Lord works. So awesome, awesome, awesome. And I I pray that you know what you're saying that it speaks to mothers that are in that situation right now because you're you're talking about life that happened for real to you. This is not a fabricated story, it's not nothing made up. This is something that you've gone through, and you can look back and say, it was only by the grace of God that got me through that. So, you know, that's that's awesome. Because, you know, with those challenges which you continue on trusting him, um, that's good. And we already talked about the scriptures that you know speaks about giving you strength. So you said yours was Philippians 4 and 13, which says, Yes, I can do all things with Christ with strength in me. There's another scripture that comes to mind to me, uh, Matthew 11 and 28. Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, you know, and so he will give you that rest because I can imagine you really needed rest during those times of hardship and troubles and you know everything. Uh so awesome. So, did you have anyone else helping you um with you know your child? Because I know you said going to church and everything. Was there you know, help throughout, you know, the ministry?
SPEAKER_01Yes, and this is really key. So I had the support of my pastor and my church family, and they really had faith for everything I was going through with my child at the time, and still do. And they prayed for my family, they prayed for us all the time, and not only just prayer, they were there when I needed them. The support, the love, the help, the nurturing. It was such a blessing, and I'm so thankful and grateful for that. So that's very important to have the support because if you don't have it, you're just gonna you you think you can do it all on your own, like I mentioned earlier, but you just cannot do it. You need the Lord on your side, you do, and you need the church family and your pastor to be your support.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely, absolutely. Um, because they are the village. When they talk about it, takes a village to raise our children and the church home, the the people in the church loving on you, loving on your child, being supportive, praying, and probably praying when you weren't even in their face. So you pray continually for you, your family, your child, and everything else that is involved with it. And I'm sure there was a lot of um laying on hands and um coming out and and being with you, you know, during your times of, you know, I'm weary, I'm tired, I'm I'm exhausted, I need someone to give me a break. So um I hear that love from the church and you know, through them as a family, because when you you come into a church home, you want them to be like a home, you want them to be like your family and not judging what you're going through, but being supportive for you. So, yeah, I understand it completely. Um what do you wish that more people understood about children who learn differently than other children?
SPEAKER_01What I would like for people to know is children who have challenges, especially on the autism spectrum, is that they need to know that being somewhere on that spectrum. It comes with four types of disabilities.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01And that's something that they're gonna have to learn. You're gonna have to learn and uh study it out because that's what I had to do. Okay, I had to learn what those four disabilities are, I had to break them down and understand how to use it to help my child who was on the spectrum. Okay, and not only did I do that, but I used prayers with everything I did, uh, scriptures and everything like that. So that was very helpful. Again, I always use the word, I always allow the Lord Jesus to guide me in everything I do, being a mom who has a son on the spectrum. My life is surrounded by the Lord Jesus Christ because I have to.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_01And that's what I would say.
SPEAKER_03That's right. Jesus is the rock. Yes, he is. You stand on that solid rock. You don't want to stand on any sand. So Jesus is the rock of everything, and and that's good. So, you know, with also the church, did you have um any counselors or resources that helped you as well?
SPEAKER_01Yes, that's the other thing. The resources is out there.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Don't think, you know, parents shouldn't think that there's no resources. Uh there's financial resources, there's hands-on resources, every kind of resources you can think of, it's out there because it was it was available for my family.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01And I had coordinators and everything, everything that was available to my family was available for my family. And it really helped. Um, they came and they would spend time with the kids. And not only that, I want to touch on this a little bit. So not only does your child with the uh challenges, you know, you're going through that as a parent, but then you have other children who also suffers through that.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01And I can speak for myself because I my other son, he saw a lot of things that I didn't see.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01Even up to now.
SPEAKER_02And those challenges that we still deal with.
SPEAKER_03Right, right. So well, that's awesome, you know, to know that other than just, you know, being around your church home, that there's resources, there's counselors, there's other programs available that um folks can take advantage of, and it's out there, you know, seek it and plus training. Um, as I understand, they teach you the different stages and steps that you know what you're supposed to do, so that you know, along with trusting in God and leaning on God and knowing that God can do things, you're now getting educated on the things of how to approach your child because your child is learning differently than someone else. Um, I used to teach when I was back in Jersey a special need class, and I had a class of I say there were seven, and uh half of them was on retlin, and Redlin would teach, would have them treated, would have them act a different way. Like I had one child, when he went down and got his dose of Retlin, he would come back and go to sleep. He was no good the rest of the day. Then I had another child when they gave him his medication, he would come back and he was bouncing off the wall. Those seven kids that I had, they felt like I had a class of 50. And at the end of the day, it was exhausting. But I understood what was happening because a lot of times they were feeling frustrated because they wanted to be smart and they wanted to get it right, and they wanted to be, they wanted folks to be proud and happy of the successes that they, you know, had made. And so what I found myself doing during those incidents, I praised them a lot. I gave them a lot of hugs, and I said, You did really well. And you would see their face just you know shine and and brighten up, and they would always give me like the biggest hug um around my my stomach, because I was like, oh my god. And I I was really feeling really happy about it. And parents would come back and say to me, my child never reacted to another teacher like you. And I contribute that because my faith and my love in God, because if I love God, then I should have love enough for your child to know that all right, you may learn differently than other children, but there's really nothing wrong with you other than you're just a little step behind someone else, and that encouragement made a big difference. So I always remember that um when I see children like that, not to judge them, not to judge the parent, but to realize, okay, I experienced that firsthand for a whole school year, and so it gave me a great respect about for parents as such and children, and it you know, you see them differently, and then they they they overcompensate on other things, you know, being having this mind that can remember more things. Um, is there one story that stood out on your child that it mays people?
SPEAKER_01Yes, so there's many, but my child, I couldn't understand how he remembered every name on every Disney character, all the credits, he knew all the names for the credits, all the characters and their real names, every character's voice. Wow, he acted out every part without looking at the TV. He played it out, it was amazing, and so his brother said, Do you have a micro, a computer chip in your brain? Let me take it out of there. So, yes, very, very smart. Um, he retains information like it's unbelievable, and I know it's a gift from the Lord. Absolutely. I mean, it's just wonderful.
SPEAKER_03They have a photogenic memory is like it's already in there, you know. I had I have a problem trying to remember what I what I cooked yesterday, and I ate it. It's like, what did I cook? So, for someone to you know have challenges to have a mind like that, whatever is in there stays in there for a long period of time, and we're trying to figure things out. So, like you said, it's a blessing. God blesses differently, and it shows and it's amazing. And I know probably those moments you're like, wow, God, I'm looking at you through my child because of this thing that you've done to the talent that he has. So, and that's that's awesome. That's really awesome. So, um I asked you about, you know, the advice that you would give mothers about, you know, learning. But what prayer did you pray for your child during uh these difficult times? Or what prayer are you still saying for your child?
SPEAKER_01Well, during the time when he was younger, I had a different prayer because the situation was very fatal. It was very, very unsafe. And the prayer was Lord protect my child, keep him safe from harm and danger, and I always lay hands on him, and I would call it also a time of worship as well, because every night I read the word to them, and I had them read the word as well, had them pray as well, and we would break down scriptures for them to understand on that level. Right, and I definitely was making sure that I did that because I knew the outcome was gonna be great. Absolutely, and so it was for safety and protection, was right, those were their main prayers, and I still pray that today for him because he's much older, and and praying that um now he would do greater things in the Lord. Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Um, 2 Corinthians 12 and 9 says that my grace is sufficient for you. And it sounds appropriate, you know, based on what we shared about, you know, your child and and how you, you know, navigated through that with the help of God and with his word and standing strong on believing who Christ Jesus is, and then reminding us that nothing is possible unless you stand on the word of God, that all things are possible through Christ Jesus, because he is great and he's mighty and he's awesome in all his ways, and that although we don't understand the things that are going on, we don't have to lean to our own understanding, we have to lean onto God's understanding, and that we should always place it in God's hand, you know, and leave it. And I know it's it's really tempting to say, let me get my hands in there and do it myself. But as you mentioned earlier, that's when the failure comes in. Yes, and that's when the exhaustion really kicks in, you know, although you cry during these seasons and although you feel exhausted, but you get strengthened back up because when you put the word in, it charges you back up and it re-rejuvenates you to a point that you're saying, God, I'm connected to you, I'm holding on to your unchanging hands because we serve a God who hands never changes. And as the word says, He's the same today, yesterday, and forevermore. So a God's not gonna ever change. There's nothing uncommon for our Lord and Savior to get us through everything. So that that's really a good, you know, start for those that may not know. Like I said, the the message is for those that know the Lord, but feeling a little bit discouraged or feeling a little bit exhausted, feeling a little bit tired, feeling as if I just, you know, I can't do it alone. Don't do it alone. That's that's that's the answer. Don't do it anymore. Just give it to God and and let him have his way. Um this this very moment, if you don't mind, I would like for you to pray for a mother that's going through this time, such as now. And you know, so that they have you know encouraging words, and you know, there's words that prayer that can pinch in. Because sometimes when you tired and exhausted, you you may not be able to pray, but because you've gone through it, if you don't mind, can you pray for some mother that's feeling you know tired and exhausted?
SPEAKER_01Yes, Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, Lord God. Right now we just pray for all the moms who have children that are on the spectrum that have challenges, Lord God, and they're tired, they're exhausted, they don't know what to do, Father God. We're praying and asking you to give them an open heart, Father, to receive you, Lord God, in the name of Jesus. We pray, Father God, that they will stop and hear you, that they will rest in you first, they will seek ye first, your kingdom, your righteousness, Lord God, and all the things that they need to do concerning their children will be done for them. In the name of Jesus, Father, I pray for these moms to have easiness when it comes to their children, that they be patient in the name of Jesus, that they walk in the fruit of the Spirit concerning their children, to be loving to their children because it can be challenging in the name of Jesus. To pray, we pray that they love their children, Father God, with a love that you give, Father, in the name of Jesus. And we pray in the name of Jesus that they get all the resources that they need and that they reach out for the support in the name of Jesus, Lord God. Touch every one of their hearts, let them hear you right now in Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Amen. Amen. I thank you for that prayer, and I I pray that it does reach someone, and I pray that it delivers and that it is a reminder that God will never fail you. Never. It also lets you know that if you just allow God to come into your life and remember, as our pastor would say, Zakar. Remember that he is the all in all. So that was an awesome prayer. I thank you for that. I appreciate that. And I pray that it it really was a blessing to those right now because we're here to remind you who God is and what God does. So we're going to, since she prayed, we're gonna play my uh my my theme song music.
SPEAKER_02Yes, literally, bless the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Well, we thank you, and we say that if you don't have a church, Carla, can you give us the information about where your church is located in Tampa? If you don't have a church home, so that they can come and visit us.
SPEAKER_01Yes, absolutely. We are Foundation's Church. We are located at 3904 Corporex Park Drive, suite 125A Tampa, Florida, 33619. Our telephone number is 813-949-0888, and we look forward to seeing you there.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. If you don't have a church home wherever you may be, then seek a church home that's going to feed you and get around those folks that will love you and love your child and help you be raise your child and pray for you and be a blessing. If you do have a church home, go back to that church home. Don't isolate the Lord because you're angry or you're upset because what your child is going through, because there would be better days, it would be days greater than what you think it is. This is not your story, your ending of your story. It is actually beginning. And if you continue on blessing God and praising God and trusting in God and putting in the word, you'll see some wonderful things through the eyes of your child. So we thank you for today. Again, this was a great episode. Carla, I thank you for being my guest today, and thank you for having me. Blessings for you and everyone else. So God bless everybody, and thank you for being part of Planet. If you like it, please share, comment, and follow.
