Choosing Purity When the Battle is Real: A Christian Woman's Guide to Navigating Temptation

In today's world, many Christian women love God but find themselves embroiled in the silent battles of temptation and purity. Whether you are waiting for marriage, have faced sexual temptations, or are trying to honor God in a society that often promotes the opposite, this blog post is for you. We will explore how to remain steadfast in your values and the importance of understanding God's design for sexuality, empowering you to resist temptation and embrace purity.

## Understanding the Challenge of Sexual Purity in Today's Culture
Remaining sexually pure is increasingly challenging in a culture saturated with messages that glorify lust and instant gratification. From movies to music, the pressure to satisfy desires can feel overwhelming. However, as Barbara Wallace reminds us, we are not defined by our temptations. The scripture in Psalms 119:9 teaches us that we can stay on a path of purity by living according to God's Word. This means making daily choices to align our actions with biblical principles, even when societal influences seem to encourage a different path.

## The Biblical Purpose of Sexual Intimacy
God designed sexual intimacy as a beautiful gift to be shared within the context of marriage. This sacred act represents a union between a husband and wife, where both individuals present themselves as living sacrifices to God. When we understand that our bodies are temples meant to honor God, we gain the strength to resist the temptations that seek to pull us away from His will. Being holy and acceptable unto God allows us to navigate relationships with others in a way that honors both ourselves and our future spouses.

## Temptation vs. Action: Knowing the Difference
Experiencing temptation is a part of life, but it's crucial to recognize the difference between temptation and acting on it. Being tempted does not equal sin; it's how we respond that matters. When faced with temptation, we have the power to choose to resist. Barbara mentions the importance of affirming, "No, devil, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus." This acknowledgment empowers us to stand firm in our commitments and wait for God's perfect timing in our lives.

## Practical Ways to Guard Your Heart
As you navigate your journey of purity, it's essential to establish practical boundaries that help you stay committed. Here are some strategies:
- **Stay in Groups**: Avoid being alone with someone you’re attracted to. Surround yourself with friends and family to prevent compromising situations.
- **Set Clear Boundaries**: Establish guidelines for your relationships, such as not dating alone in private settings, to maintain a healthy distance from temptation.
- **Fill Yourself with Scripture**: Regularly read and meditate on the Bible to strengthen your spirit and remind yourself of God's promises.
- **Seek Accountability**: Share your journey with trusted friends who can encourage you and help keep you accountable in your pursuit of purity.

## Finding Hope After Past Mistakes
It's easy to feel ashamed of past sexual sins, but shame is not what God wants for us. Barbara encourages women to embrace God's forgiveness and move forward with hope. Remember, everyone makes mistakes, but the key is to learn and grow from them. God’s grace is always available, and you are worthy of His love regardless of your past. The journey toward purity is not about perfection but about progress, faith, and a commitment to honor God with your life.

### Key Takeaways:
- **Recognize Temptation**: Understand that experiencing temptation is normal; how you respond makes the difference.
- **Establish Boundaries**: Set practical boundaries with relationships to help you stay committed to your values.
- **Seek Forgiveness and Move Forward**: Don’t let past mistakes define you; instead, focus on God’s grace and the hope for a better future.

## Conclusion
Choosing purity in a world full of temptations is undoubtedly challenging, but it is achievable with God's help. By understanding the purpose of sexual intimacy, recognizing the nature of temptation, and setting practical boundaries, you can honor God with your body and spirit. Remember that you are not alone in this journey; God is with you every step of the way, offering grace, strength, and support. For more insights on navigating this path, I encourage you to listen to the full conversation on our podcast.

Welcome back to Planted and Rooted in God's Word. I want to let you know that this is our podcast, and I am your host, Barbara Wallace. Now, today's conversation is for every single Christian woman who loves God but finds herself fighting that battle that isn't always talked about openly. Maybe you're waiting for marriage, maybe you've experienced sexual temptation, maybe you've made choices you regret, or maybe you're trying to honor God while living in a world that constantly tells you to satisfy every desire. Now, if that's you, I want you to know that this from very beginning, you are not defined by temptation. You are not beyond God's grace. And if you have fallen in the past, God forgiveness is still available through Jesus Christ. Today we'll talk honestly about purity, temptation, God designed for sexuality, and how his word gives us strength to walk in obedience, even when it's difficult. Now let us pray. Dear precious Father God, we come before your presence, humble as we know how, giving you thanks for this wonderful day that you have made. Asking you, Lord, to forgive me of all my sin and unrighteousness. I ask, Father God, that you use me as your temple, that you use me to be the obedient vessel that you call, that you make me and shape me, that today's podcast, Father God, will hit someone, that they'll be encouraged to know you and follow you and love you, to embrace on you. And I pray, Father God, for all of those that are listening, that you bless them in such a way, Father God, that they know who you are by your grace and by your love and by your power. So, Jesus, I give you the glory and I give you honor in Jesus' name. Amen. So thank you again for coming in and joining me on this podcast today. And I believe I want to call this episode choosing purity when the battle is real, knowing that if you wait on God, you're honoring Him with your body and in your heart. Now, today is not, you know, a segment where we would be judging anyone because we all fall short to the glory of God. Every day we have challenges, every day we have tests, and every day we need to seek God and what the things that we're going through. Now, I'm not one to say that I have not been tempted, and I'm not the one to say that I'm perfect, but through Christ Jesus, that's where the perfection is, and this is what we're gonna talk about. The discussion that we're gonna have is first thing is why is remaining sexually pure such a challenge in today's culture? Well, the reason because of that, although that you are a Christian and you love the Lord and you're trying to be absent from the substain from anything that's sexually unmoral, there's so much in this world going on where you have the television, you have movies, you have songs around you, you have even the world around you is all about lust, it's all about your flesh, it's all about me, me, me, and pleasing my body. And we do know that the flesh will not enter into the gates of heaven, anyhow. So anything that's pleasing to our flesh is going to be a temptation, and you have to be strong in the things of the Lord and always ask him to guide you during those times that you're starting to get tempted. Um, as if Psalms 119, 9, and 1 says, How can a young person stay on the path of purity by living according to your word? I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. So God's word helps us shape our thoughts and our choices. So this is a daily choice that you choose to walk in the things of the Lord and that it does not overcome you. Because we all know that the battle is not ours, but is the Lord. And of course, yes, we can sit up in the church and we get that, you know, message from our pastors that we should sustain and we should walk away. But how do you do that? How do you get a past that? And how do you walk in the things of the Lord without even feeling guilty or feeling ashamed or feeling as if you're falling down and you can't get back up? For every time that you fall down, you get back up. The thing is, is that you don't want to continue on falling, and after a while, you won't be able to get back up. So if you make that mistake, you can always ask the Lord for forgiveness. Lord, I repent, I'm sorry, I fell into this lust, but I want to now move on from that. And we know that Jesus Christ was tempted so many times by Satan, and he's doing what his job is, is to trap you in these things that may be appeasing or maybe feeling good to you. Because of course, Satan is going to tell you all the feel-good things. Go ahead, fall into your lust, let your body be satisfied, you'll be all right. Don't worry about it. God knows that He wants us to, you know, go out and multiply. Well, he was talking about that when it comes to marriage. And at the moment, if you're not married, then you need to substain from that. The next question is what does the Bible teach us about God's purpose for sexual intimacy? Well, this is an act of sacrifice that you present yourself as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto him. So if you're presenting yourself holy and acceptable unto him, you're able to substain from the things that the flesh desires of you. And you're able to walk away from when your body saying, Yes, I want to be fulfilled sexually with you know companionship or with someone that can intimately, you know, make me feel so much good in our body. So the Bible talks about you being holy and acceptable, and that means that your body is a temple of God's. And if your body is a temple of God, it shall not be defiled prior to the marriage, the vows, the union that God has created for us in such a beautiful thing. When man and woman come together and unite as one, that is his gift that man and woman live together as one with him in the midst of it. And just think about that, how that affects you. My next question for us to discuss is now this one had me stunned when I was thinking about it. What's the difference between experiencing temptation and then choosing to act on it? And I I had to I had to think about this for a minute. What's the difference between experiencing temptation and then choosing to act on it? Now, many times we experience temptation when we see an attractive male, and maybe he held your hand for a second, or someone that you're dating, because we don't want to say that everyone is lusting after everyone that they see, because our eyes see beauty in everyone. But say you're dating a young man in your church, and that young man holds your hand, and then all of a sudden you're starting to experience temptation that you know you kiss them, and then you start feeling a little bit more inside your body, and say, Wait, wait a minute, I'm feeling something inside me that says this kiss wants to lead on to something different. So you're experiencing it. Now, the difference between choosing to act on it is if you say yes all the way, let's let's go ahead and get this out of the way and let's uh act on or perform what we're feeling right now inside, because we're attracted to one another. And God created us to be attracted to one another when He created Adam and Eve. They were attracted to one another, they loved one another, but you know, because of us being human and living in this fleshly body and knowing that things, you know, turn us on or get it excited, and we are excited by looking at things, by smelling things, by touching things, because we have all our senses that work all together to get you aroused and stimulated in such a way. Now, that's where the difference is if you act on it, if you go through the act. But if you're experiencing the temptation where the you know the devil is speaking to you and your body and saying, Yes, go ahead, go for it, girl. You got this. Go ahead and act on it. But you stop it and you say, No, devil, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus. Flesh, we are not going to go through this today. And I'm saving myself for the Most High God to bring me my mate that He has selected from me, because the word says, He that findeth a wife findeth a good thing. So, with that said, you're you're patiently waiting on him and not acting on it. Now, don't get me wrong that sometimes we do fall short, again, which I mentioned before, that we all fall short to the glory of God. But the thing is, is don't stay there in that situation and continue on doing it over and over because then it becomes a habitual sin that you're sinning time after time after time, and then you don't have any type of way of you know stopping it because you're taking it too far. And so let's move on to my next question for us to discuss how can a woman guard her heart while she is waiting, which is really good. Think about it. What ways can you do to guard your heart while you're waiting? And the few ways that you do is continually place the word in you. Read daily, continue to pray, continue to talk to the Lord, because if you don't keep yourself filled up with the word of God inside you, you don't have the tools to keep you to stand strong. So the word should always come to remembrance when you are faced with the trials and the tribulations and the temptations that says, All right, I want to give into what my flesh wants to. Again, flesh is weak, but our spirit and our body and our mind should be strong. So when your flesh gets weak, your spirit should be able to tell your body, not today, we're not going to fall into temptation because the word says that I should not do that, that I should be waiting on my spouse to move forward. So think about some of these questions and how it makes you feel, or how you would have answered it. Next question that I have for discussion for us is what practical boundaries have helped you stay committed to purity? Now, each people, each person, excuse me, may have an tactive or may have a practice on their own self to keep them to stay pure in the things of the Lord. Some things that you can do is make sure that you're not in a room alone with a male, someone that you're attracted to, someone that you're dating, someone that you're seeing, or someone that may, you know, get you excited. Make sure you're around, you know, multiple people. Keep that boundary. It shouldn't be having maybe uh a male stay, you know, come over to your house, and then you'd be thinking there's nobody around, and then you have dark lights on. Now you're setting the atmosphere with the dark lights, or you're setting the atmosphere with, you know, the room looking cozy. And then after a certain hour, it should be, you know, well lit, or you want to go out, go out where there's lots of people around. Maybe try, you know, double dating with you know couples so that you have other folks around you. So you set those boundaries. You know, after a certain hour, the gentleman should be able to go home and not linger. If he falls asleep on the couch, then it's like, okay, you have to wake up, you don't live here. Or if you fall asleep, like I need to wake up, I need to go home, because sometimes we add different folks home. So, you know, set some practical boundaries before you so that you'll be able to keep yourself at a pace where you're not falling into any of those, you know, desires that your your body wants to move on to. So let's let's keep that in mind. The next question I have for discussion right now is, you know, what would I say to women who feel ashamed because of past sexual sins? Now, I'm not here to judge anyone, and I don't think anyone should judge you from what you've done in the past, because we've all done some things that we may not be pleased that we've done and God's not pleased with it. But don't let anyone shame you to make you feel as if you're not worthy of God's love, because that's something I would never do. If a young person came to me that was single and she said to me, Listen, you know, I slipped up last night and I'm really sorry. The first thing I would do is just embrace her and say, It's gonna be all right. You know, have you asked the Lord for forgiveness? And whether she's not she said yes or no, then we're gonna move on from there. You know, we would take time to pray about it, and then we would, you know, bring out some scriptures to help her. But it's not about, you know, shaming you because of what you've done. We've all had some sins that we're not happy about, and we've all been in situations that we wish we never got into, but you learn from those mistakes, and then you continue to grow from those mistakes because then you can look back, and then every time that Satan thinks I'm gonna test you with this because you were weak one time, and that's what Satan will do. If he finds out, okay, she's already fell one time. Let me see if I can get her to fall down again and again and again. And that's when you pull out your power Bible verse that you have to tell the devil, no, I'm not falling into that trap today. I am prepared for you this time. I am ready for you, and no weapons formed against me shall prosper. And you speak out to them and say, you're not getting away with this. Talk to them right now and say, God, I need you right now because I'm starting to feel, you know, some kind of way, and I'm starting to make myself feel excited when I don't want to be excited. What I want to be excited for is the things of the Lord. I want God to continue on lifting me and using me and making me holy and and acceptable unto Him in what we do. So that's a good question that you know I thought about. And another question is, you know, what hope would you leave with every woman to today? What hope would I leave you? Is that you're human. We all are flesh, but our spirit should be strong in the Lord. We should walk by faith and not by sight. The same thing about you should not walk by your flesh wanting everything, because just remember in the Garden of Eden when Satan came to Eve with the forbidden fruit, he tempted her because of the desire. Because God had commanded Adam and which he told his wife, do not touch this fruit, do not eat of it, because you will surely die. And what Satan did to Eve in that instant was he made it pleasing to her in her eyesight. So if her eyesight saw it pleasing, that means her flesh was saying, Yeah, I agree with you. This looks like there would be something for me to partake in. And that she did. And because she didn't die, you know, naturally, but spiritually she did. That's how Satan will come to you with go ahead, you can sleep with this this man right now. You're you're not going to, you know, lose out with the things of the Lord. It's gonna make you feel real good and you're gonna be pleasured completely. And see, that is the trick of the enemy. Making you see things and feeling things that are not true. You know, he didn't tell them that once that fruit was eaten, that they will be cast out of you know, the Garden of Eden. He won't tell you if you fall into temptation, now you're taking on someone else's, you know, sin and you're carrying it on to you because you're now participating with this man's you know lifestyle. And of course, you know, again, we get tempted because our flesh is always rearing up. Our flesh always wants to have a party, our flesh always wants to have a good time, our flesh always wants to get things that we shouldn't have for the present moment. But if you stay faithful in the things of the Lord, if you stay rooted in God's word, if you read the word diligently and you seek Him, then you don't have to worry about those things. A scripture that comes to mind is 1 Thessalonians 4, 3 and 5. And what it says is it is good, it is God's will that you should be sanctified, that you should avoid sexual immortality. So purity is part of God's desire for our spiritual growth. So that is the reason why we sustain from sexual act, because we want to continue to grow in the things of the Lord. And if you're constantly falling and doing the things that are not pleasing, your spiritual growth, it gets stunned and you're not moving forward in the things of the Lord. And then when trials come, because you're unable to keep yourself strong in God and the word's not in you, when the devil comes with you with some more things because you're not full or rooted, then there'll be more trials and tribulations that'll be harder. But first Thessalonian talks about that. Also, Galatians 5 and 16 says, walk by the spirit, and you will not gratify the desire of your flesh. Now, we overcome temptation by depending on the Holy Spirit rather than our own strength, because we can't lean onto our own understanding, but unto God's, you know, and I know folks probably thinking, Well, what do you do when you know you're dating someone in a church, in your church, and you know he hears the word just as you hear the word, and say, you know, you go out and you hug one another, and then they That hug becomes a kiss. And the next thing you know, he's he's grabbing places he shouldn't grab. And in your mind, you know, you're feeling good, but then you're thinking, I just know he goes to the same church that I go to. No, the pastor is telling him the same thing that he's telling me. And why can't he just, you know, listen to what the word says? So now he puts you in that predicament or that situation where you you have to fight him off, but then you're wondering your back of your mind, wow, I don't know why this guy is acting like that, but again, it's the flesh. You know, you're you're an attractive woman, you're you're desirable, you're intelligent, you're a woman of God, most likely a woman that he will love to have as his wife because he sees the good thing in you. But sometimes we have to be stronger for the both of us. You know, keep him in his place and say, Whoa, buddy, slow it up. This is not the time. You know, perhaps we need to call the night an ending and we go our separate ways. This way that keeps, you know, peace between you and God, your spirit, your walk, and your growth. Now, 2 Timothy 2 and 22, because now I'm giving us scriptures based on what we've been talking about. Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. So, this is where the Bible encouraged us not only to turn away from temptation, but to actively pursue Christ-centered life. So, you know, again, your desires is nothing but your flesh wanting to be pleased. But your spirit should be stronger than your flesh. And your spirit should be able to put a halt on the things and the desires that your flesh wants to do. So let's, you know, keep that and remind ourselves daily that I'm pursuing the things of the Lord. I don't want to pursue the things of my flesh because that is not going to give me spiritual growth. That is not going to keep me rooted in God's plan. That is not going to satisfy God when I'm doing something that's unpleasing in his eyesight. So remember that this is a walk that we have. And we have to do this daily because we all will have to do the same thing, because every day is not the same as yesterday. But each day that you do things that are pleasing, reading the word, staying focused, is another day that you get stronger. And I mentioned this so many times is that when you put on the full armor of God and you walk in the things of the Lord, it prepares you for those battles that you're going to fight. Because there's a word in a song that Yolanda Adams sings, the battle is not yours, but it's the Lord. And he will fight those battles with you as long as you are willing to do the things that's pleasing in his eyesight. And if you fall, don't beat yourself up. Get yourself back up. Go into your word, get on your knees, and move forward. And don't ever let anyone shame you. Don't let anyone knock you down. Don't let anyone tear you down. Because again, that also is the trick of the enemy. Where the enemy will send someone, and that's how he works, to steal, kill, and destroy. He will send someone your way just to make you feel so bad that you've done, you know, the ultimate sin that you're no good any longer. And that's when you just don't listen to that. Don't let that get into your head. Because when those things get in your head, then it changes your walk. It changes your talk. It changes the way that you see that God loves you so much, ultimately, and don't have to worry about, hey, you know, God just, I did something that God don't like and is pleasing, and I'm not, I'm not worthy of his love. You are worthy of God's love. You are worthy of him protecting you. Just don't let anyone make you think of anything because God loves you unconditionally. Yes, there are going to be times you fall. Hopefully, it's not over and over again. Like I said, you don't want it to be a habitual sin. You don't want it to continue on going on and on and on and on. And because, you know, you want the Lord, like of Psalms 51 and 10 says, create in me a pure heart, oh God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me, which is so beautiful for everyone. You're seeking to renew your purity. Because there's a song that we sing, you know, create in me a clean heart and purify me, Lord, so that I may worship you. So you want to be pure in the things of the Lord so that you're able to worship him. And if you have junk in your life or you have sin that is stopping you from, you know, moving forward with the Lord, then you can't have that worship. And then in the midst of it, after you fail and you again ask for forgiveness and you read your word, start praising him because you know that he's pleased when you do the things that's worthy of his love and his grace. And he will always accept you because God is the same God today, yesterday, and forevermore. He never changes, he's always gonna be there for you, and he will always walk with you and love you regardless. So purity is not about earning God's love. So you think, okay, I need to be pure, I need to earn God's love. That's not what purity is about, it's a response to the love we've already received through Jesus Christ. So you're responding to God by saying, I want to abstain from sex because I'm not married, I'm single. So that's your response. You're like, Lord, accept my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto you. And how it's holy and acceptable is that you are being faithful with your body, and you're not going to fall into the things. So whether you've walked faithfully or you struggled with temptation, or you're beginning again after failure, God's invitation is the same. He says, Come to him. So he will not push you away. His grace is greater than your past. So whatever you did in the past, God's grace is greater than that. Your sin that you've done, God's grace is more than abundant than that. His mercy is new every morning. So we get a second chance every morning of God's new mercy. His mercy is everlasting, it never stops. It goes on and on. He's an omnipotent God, he's omnipresent, he's everywhere, and that's how his love and his grace is. And through the power of the Holy Spirit, he can give you the strength to walk in purity one day at a time. Don't write a calendar that says, I'm going to do this week one, week two. We're going to, it's a daily walk. Just like when you wake up in the morning and you get out of your bed and you put your feet on the ground, out of the bed, you say, Thank you, Jesus, for another day. If this is a thing that you're struggling with yourself, pray, Lord, keep me. Keep me in your perfect peace, that I may be able to abstain from anything that may be pulling me away from you. So your identity is found in Christ. So how you walk, how you talk, how you do things, how you love is all related to Christ. And we want to do the things that's pleasing in his eyesight. We want to walk like him. So when someone sees us, they see us as Christ-like. They see us as this person really loves the Lord. And this person is always going to stand on the word. And then it might be a time that you will have to minister to someone that's in the same situation. Because that's what this is. It's a ministry to encourage women that you're not alone. You're not the only one going through that. Don't be ashamed if you fall. Don't be ashamed if you get tempted. Don't be afraid to ask God to help you to do better. Don't be afraid to say, I'm going to stop reading my word and I'm not going to move forward. Don't get stagnant in it. Continue to pour into yourself. Continue to put the word in. Every day put something in. Read the word. If it's music, listen to a gospel song. Listen to a gospel program. You know, we're filled with so many things that just is sexual and mortarity. You can't even turn on a television. Even cartoons, it's incredible. Cartoons today is full of sexuality. And it's just that's how the world is today. It's all about pleasure. But then again, you know, we live in this world, but we're not of the world. And that's the thing about it. We don't have to do the same thing that everyone else in the world is doing because we walk in higher standards of God's love and grace and mercy. So I thank everyone. And if this episode has touched you in some way, or you got something out of it, I ask that you share, that you like, you put a comment, and that you follow. So with that said, I'm going to pray us out because that's what we do uh every broadcast that I do. Now we ask you all to bow your head. Dear precious Father God, in the name of Jesus, I thank you once again for this platform. I know that you are a mighty God. I know that you are my maker, that you are the potter and I am the clay. I pray that you continue on using me on this platform, that you continue on blessing, that you bless those that are listening, that you encourage everyone that may hear the sound of my voice. I pray, Father God, that their walk is a little more easier by the tips and to know that they just read your words and that they're encouraged to take heed and listen and do the things that are pleasing in your eyesight. I pray, Father God, that no one ever shames them, but you cover them, Father God, by your grace and your mercy, and that you touch them and that you give them the desires to do the things that are pleasing to you. And then as you bless them, Father God, you said to seek ye first the kingdom of God and your righteousness and all things that be added unto you. So glory to you, Lord. I give you praise, I give you honor in Jesus' name, amen. So once again, as I say every week, if you are not in your church, go back to your church. If you need to go to a church, find a church home that will feed you spiritually. And also that, you know, if you are looking for a church in Tampa, Florida, you are invited to our ministry in Tampa. Uh, they don't even have the address, but I will put it in the um in the chat. So contact me, write comment. So I pray again that this was pleasing in your eyesight, and that everything that you need, the Lord has. So again, we're gonna end with my theme song.
