Bible 101 Day 39: Genesis 28

Welcome to day thirty nine. Jacob is running. He's running from his brother Esau, who wants to kill him. He's running from his father Isaac, whose blessing he stole through deception. He's running from the home he shattered with his own hands, and he's running alone. Jacob is one of the most complicated figures in Genesis. He's the chosen one, the carrier of the covenant promise, the one through whom God will build a nation. And he got that position by lying, by pretending to be his brother, by deceiving his blind, dying father. So here's the question. Genesis is quietly asking, what does God do with someone like that? Does God wait until Jacob gets his act together? Does he demand repentance first? Does he revoke the promise because the person carrying it proved unworthy? Jacob has nothing, no wealth, no family, no moral credibility. He's sleeping on the ground somewhere between Beersheba and Haran with a stone for a pillow. And that is exactly where God shows up. Here is today's passage. Jacob went out from Beersheba and travelled toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep. He dreamed, and saw a stairway set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. The angels of God were ascending and descending on it. Behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land that you are lying on. Your offspring will be as the dust of the earth. You will spread abroad to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. In you and in your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed. Behold, I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back into this land, for I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you. Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn't know it. He was afraid and said, How awesome is this place? This is none other than God's house, and this is the gate of heaven. Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was loose at the first. Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me in the way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, twenty one, so that I come again to my father's house in peace, and Yahweh will be my God. Twenty two, then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God's house, and of all that you will give me, I will surely give a tenth to you. All right, let's slow down and look at what's actually happening here. Jacob stops for the night in an unnamed place. The text says he arrived at a certain place, no city, no landmark, just somewhere in the wilderness between everything he had and everything he's hoping to find. He takes a stone for a pillow, and he sleeps. This is not a holy man having a holy moment. This is a fugitive crashing in the dirt, and then the dream, a stairway or ladder. The Hebrew word solemn appears only here in all of Scripture, set up between earth and heaven, angels ascending and descending, and at the top Yahweh himself, standing and speaking. Notice the direction of the angels. They aren't descending first, as if coming to bless Jacob, they're ascending first, which means they were already on earth before the dream began. God's messengers were already present in the ordinary, unmarked landscape Jacob had been walking through. Jacob just couldn't see it. That detail matters, because Jacob's first words when he wakes up capture something true about all of us. Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn't know it. God was present before Jacob recognized it. God was active before Jacob was looking. The problem wasn't God's absence. The problem was Jacob's blindness. Now listen to what God actually says in the dream. He doesn't say, Jacob, we need to talk about what you did to your brother. He doesn't say, Clean yourself up, and then we'll renegotiate. He doesn't retract the promise or reassign it to someone more deserving. He says, I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. He starts with identity, his own identity, rooted in the covenant that predates Jacob's failures entirely. And then he renews the promise. Word for word what he said to Abraham, word for word what he said to Isaac. The covenant doesn't depend on Jacob's character, it depends on God's. And then one sentence that is among the most remarkable in all of Genesis Behold, I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back into this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you. God binds himself to Jacob, not to a polished version of Jacob, to this Jacob, the liar, the fugitive, the one sleeping on a rock in the wilderness. This is not what we expect grace to look like. We expect grace to come after effort, after remorse, after demonstrated change. But God's presence arrives here at Jacob's lowest point, with no conditions attached, only a promise and a commitment. Jacob wakes up afraid. The Hebrew word is Yar, awe and terror together. He hasn't had a warm, comforting experience. He's had an encounter with the living God, and it shakes him. How awesome is this place? This is none other than God's house, and this is the gate of heaven. He names it Bethel, in Hebrew Bait El, the house of God. A stone pillow in the dirt becomes holy ground, not because of what Jacob brought to it, but because of who showed up there. And then Jacob's response, and this is where it gets honest, is a little unsettling. He makes a vow. If God will be with me, then Yahweh will be my God. If Jacob is negotiating, still bargaining, still the dealmaker. Even after an encounter with the living God, his first instinct is to put conditions on the relationship. And yet, God doesn't walk away from that either. The story keeps going. God keeps working. Jacob the deal maker will, over decades, become Israel, the one who wrestles with God. The transformation is real, but it's slow, and it starts here, in the dark, with a stone pillow and a dream he didn't ask for. So what does this mean for you? It means God doesn't wait until you're worthy. He meets you where you actually are, not where you think you should be before you come to him. He meets you in the wilderness, in the aftermath of your worst decisions, in the place you ended up after the thing you're most ashamed of. It means the covenant, the promise that you belong to God, that you are held, that you will not be abandoned, is not conditional on your performance. It is anchored in who God is, and it means that the transformation God wants to work in you doesn't require you to be fixed first. It begins in the encounter. It continues through the relationship. Jacob didn't leave Bethel a different man overnight, but he left marked, he left knowing, and that knowing changed the trajectory of everything that came after. Bethel is everywhere. The ordinary, unnamed place you're in right now, the commute, the quiet house, the difficult season, is not God forsaken ground. God was there before you noticed. Here's a practice for today. Jacob said, Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn't know it. The question worth sitting with is, where have you been assuming God is absent? Think of one place in your life that feels like the wilderness right now, a relationship that's fractured, a season that feels suspended, a stretch of ground that feels ordinary at best, and forsaken at worst. Take one minute today to simply say out loud, God is in this place, not as a performance, not because you feel it, as a declaration, the way Jacob named Bethel before anything had changed. You're not manufacturing a feeling, you're placing a stone, marking the ground, saying, Even here. The promise God made at Bethel wasn't contingent on Jacob's worthiness. It's not contingent on yours either. Now I invite you into a time of prayer and reflection. Peace be with you.
