Welcome to day forty two, six weeks in, and what a week it's been. We've watched a man deceive his father, flee his family, dream of angels, fall in love twice over, get outwitted by his father in law, father twelve sons through a household full of rivalry and heartbreak, and then finally, wrestle through the night with God himself. That man is Jacob. And here's the question I want to sit with today. Why him? Not Abraham, whose faith we could at least admire, not Isaac, whose life was marked by quiet faithfulness, but Jacob, the schemer, the deceiver, the man whose name literally means heel grabber, the man who tricked his blind father, stole his brother's blessing, and then spent twenty years running from the consequences. Why would God build the covenant around a man like that? The answer, I think, is more unsettling than we'd like. It might not be in spite of Jacob's brokenness, it might be through it. This week has shown us something remarkable about how God works, not by choosing the worthy and perfecting them, but by choosing the flawed and staying with them. All the way through the wrestling, all the way through the night, all the way to the dawn. No new passage today. Just reflection, just space to gather what this week has placed in our hands. Let's sit with it together. Here's what this week has been building toward. Let's start at the beginning of the week. Genesis 25-27. Jacob and Esau, the stolen birthright, the stolen blessing. Here's what's easy to miss. The deception in Genesis 27 isn't a surprise to God. It had been foretold. Before the twins were even born, God told Rebekah that the older would serve the younger. The blessing Jacob stole, he was always going to receive it. But he didn't trust that. So he grabbed for it instead. That's Jacob in a sentence. He believes in the promise. He just doesn't believe God can deliver it without his help. So he schemes, he manipulates, he takes matters into his own hands, and it costs him everything. He loses his home, his family, his brother's affection. He flees into the wilderness with nothing but a promise he isn't sure he deserves. And then Genesis twenty eight Bethel Jacob falls asleep in the desert with a stone for a pillow. No altar, no prayer, no preparation, and God shows up, a stairway between earth and heaven, angels ascending and descending, and the voice of the Lord, I am with you wherever you go. Notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't say, We'll talk when you've sorted yourself out. He doesn't wait for Jacob to repent of the deception, to reconcile with Esau, to become someone worthy of the promise. He just shows up. The Hebrew word at Bethel is Makam, place. Jacob calls it the house of God, the gate of heaven. But when he arrived, it was just a random patch of wilderness, a makam with no special credentials. God makes ordinary places holy by showing up in them, and he shows up for Jacob before Jacob has done a single thing to earn it. That matters. That matters enormously. Then Genesis 29 to 30. Jacob arrives in Haran, falls in love with Rachel, and gets outmaneuvered by Laban, a man who out Jacob's Jacob. The deceiver gets deceived, and the result is a household full of competing wives, jealous sisters, and sons born out of rivalry and heartbreak and desperation. This is the family that will become the twelve tribes of Israel, not a peaceable household, not a model of spiritual health, a family full of wounds and competition and love tangled up with loss. God works through that. He works through Leah, unloved but fruitful, crying out in pain and longing for her husband's affection. He works through Rachel, beloved but barren, aching for a child. He works through the complexity and the mess of real human relationships, not around them. That's a different kind of God than we often imagine. We tend to picture God waiting for things to get cleaned up before he enters, but the God of Genesis enters the mess. He works from inside the dysfunction, not above it. Then Genesis thirty one to thirty two, the flight from Laban, the confrontation at the river, the night of wrestling. Genesis thirty two is one of the strangest passages in the entire Bible. Jacob, alone, wrestles with a man through the night, a figure who is somehow divine. They fight until dawn. Jacob won't let go until he receives a blessing. And the stranger does something unexpected. He doesn't overpower Jacob. He touches his hip and throws it out of joint, and still Jacob holds on. And then the stranger gives him a new name. Not Jacob, Israel. The name means one who strives with God or God strives. And it's given not as a condemnation, but as a coronation. You have striven with God and with men, and you have prevailed. Think about what's being honored here, not Jacob's purity, not his wisdom, not his faithfulness, his tenacity, even with a dislocated hip, even exhausted, even desperate. He held on, and God said, That counts. So what do we do with all of this? What does it mean for us? It means that God is not waiting for you to have it together before he meets you. He met Jacob the schemer at Bethel, in the desert, with a stone for a pillow. He met Leah in her grief, and gave her children when she longed for love. He met Jacob the wrestler in the dark, and instead of defeating him, renamed him. The god of this story is not a god who descends from a safe distance to reward the worthy. He's a god who enters the disorder, stays through the night, and meets us exactly where we are broken hip and all. Here's what the week has been quietly teaching us. God's faithfulness does not require our worthiness as a prerequisite. The covenant doesn't hold, because Jacob held it together. The covenant holds because God holds it, and that is the only reason any of us are still in the story. Here's a practice for today. Think about the people in your life you tend to mentally disqualify, the ones you assume God couldn't use, or couldn't reach, or wouldn't be interested in, because of their history, their failures, their choices. Maybe one of those people is you. This week, write down one situation in your life, a relationship, a pattern, a season, that feels too messy for God to work through, not too far gone, just too tangled, too complicated, too much your fault, and then hold that thing up against the story of Jacob, the deceiver God renamed Israel, the schemer God wrestled with in the dark, the flawed, striving, complicated man through whom God built a nation. Jacob's story doesn't clean up before God arrives. It gets messier. And God shows up anyway. So does your mess disqualify you, or is it exactly where God tends to show up? Sit with that question.
