AdrianRight. But the source material provides the central analogy that completely recontextualizes that kind of advice.

AdrianYes. It argues that telling someone to switch up their thought process after a major emotional crisis is exactly like telling someone with a freshly broken leg to just, you know, walk it off.
SarahWhich sounds absurd when you put it like that.
AdrianRight. Because the bone is snapped. Willpower doesn't mend bone. When someone has a broken leg, you never question their desire to walk.

AdrianAnd that is incredibly hard to do.
SarahRight. That feeling of absolute helplessness is so uncomfortable for the bystander. So is our reliance on these stay positive platitudes actually just a defense mechanism for the friends and family?
AdrianOh, it absolutely is a defense mechanism. Think about it. If I can convince myself that your immense pain is just a software glitch, right.
SarahA simple matter of perspective.
AdrianThen I feel empowered. I can give you advice. I can tell you to look on the bright side. It keeps the really messy, terrifying reality of severe trauma at arm's length.
SarahAaron Powell Because accepting that severe emotional distress is a physical injury, well, that means accepting how fragile our own physical realities actually are.
AdrianExactly. It means admitting that a sudden shock could break our own internal structures just as easily.
SarahWow. Yeah, that is a terrifying thought. So if we follow this logic and we accept that emotional trauma is as tangible and real as a broken bone, we have to understand exactly what is breaking inside the body,
When The Nervous System Stays On

AdrianRight. We have to look at the mechanics.
SarahBecause a shockwave from a physical impact, like, say, a car crash, breaks a femur, but where does the emotional shockwave go?
AdrianWell, the text explains that when an event is just too vast or too terrifying or too devastating to process, the resulting shockwave doesn't just evaporate.
SarahIt doesn't just fade away.
AdrianNo, it gets trapped. It gets trapped directly inside our biology. And the document uses this really great phrase. It defines the nervous system as the body's internal security team.
SarahWhich is such a brilliant way to conceptualize it. Your nervous system is constantly scanning the environment, right? Assessing threats, deciding whether you are safe or in danger. Right. So when a massive shock occurs, that internal security team goes on high alert. The metaphorical blast, doors close, alarms blare, and all these biological resources are rapidly diverted to help you survive.
AdrianWe should be clear. That is a highly functional, completely healthy response to an immediate threat.
SarahRight. It keeps you alive.
AdrianExactly. The problem, as the source details, is what happens when that shockwave gets physically stuck.
SarahAnd the system doesn't reset.
AdrianRight. The internal security team basically goes rogue. Imagine you have this state-of-the-art security system in a building. It detects a break-in, sounds the sirens, calls the authorities, and locks down the entire building.

AdrianPrecisely. And think about the biological purpose of a fever. It is the body's extreme metabolic response to an invader.
SarahRight. It's trying to burn out the infection.
AdrianExactly. The hypothalamus cranks up the heat to burn out a virus or bacteria, creating an inhospitable environment for the threat.
SarahOkay, I see where this is going.
AdrianRight. If your internal security team is entirely convinced that a massive life-threatening event is currently happening inside of you, it deploys every single weapon in its arsenal.

AdrianIt floods your system with cortisol and adrenaline that spikes your heart rate, which increases your blood pressure, which causes severe muscle tension.
SarahWhich leads to that chronic physical pain we mentioned earlier.
AdrianExactly. And it can literally turn up your core temperature to fight an invisible trapped threat.
SarahSo the physical symptoms aren't metaphors. The body isn't just, you know, acting out sadness.
AdrianNot at all.
SarahThe body is quite literally burning up from the inside out because it is engaged in a full-scale biological war against a ghost.
AdrianThat's exactly it. And when you grasp the sheer metabolic cost of that state, exhaustion. Yes, the utter exhaustion of a body constantly at war, constantly burning immense amounts of caloric energy, constantly tense and flooded with adrenaline, you realize how absurd it is to look at a person in that condition and say, hey, just try a fresh perspective.
SarahIt's laughable. You might as well tell someone who is actively running a marathon to just think about sitting on a couch.
AdrianRight, like that's gonna lower their heart rate.
SarahExactly. It doesn't matter what they're thinking about, their heart is still pounding at 160 beats a minute. The physical reality overrides the cognitive intention every single time. Every time. You cannot simply think your way out of a body that feels like it's constantly under attack.
AdrianWhich brings us to the most critical crossroads in the source material.
SarahOkay, yeah. Because if the internal security team is an absolute chaos, if it's triggering fevers and chronic pain and racing hearts, how does anyone actually begin the recovery
Safety Before Speech

SarahOkay, I have to challenge this safety before speech concept, though.
AdrianI figured you might.
SarahWell, we are a talk it-out culture for a reason, right?
AdrianWe are.
SarahIf someone goes through something horrific and they just shut down, my immediate instinct, and probably the instinct of most people listening, is that they are repressing it.
AdrianRight, that they're bottling it up.
SarahExactly. So if we stop asking them to talk, aren't we just endorsing avoidance? How is respecting the silence not just letting someone isolate and rot in their own trauma?
AdrianIt's a really valid question. But the distinction lies in understanding what the brain is biologically capable of doing in that specific moment.
SarahOkay. Biologically capable.
AdrianRight. Speech is a highly complex cognitive function. It requires logic, sequence, memory, and calm reflection.
SarahAll the higher level stuff.
AdrianExactly. All of those functions are housed in the prefrontal cortex, which is the logical thinking part of your brain.
SarahRight.
AdrianBut when your internal security team sounds the alarm, the brain executes a biological override. Blood flow and electrical activity literally shift away from the prefrontal cortex and are redirected to the amygdala and the brainstem.
SarahThe survival centers. Yes. So the brain is essentially powering down the luxury systems like speech and logic to divert all available power to the life support systems like fight, flight, or freeze.
AdrianThat is exactly what happens. The speak center of the brain is literally offline because the internal security team has deemed it non-essential for immediate survival. So when you force someone to sit down and verbally articulate their trauma while their body is still trapped in that physiological shockwave, you are demanding a biological impossibility.
SarahBecause the hardware isn't running that software right now.
AdrianExactly. You are asking them to use a part of their brain that currently does not have the blood flow or the resources to operate.
SarahOkay, I have an analogy for this. Trying to force someone to talk about their trauma when their body is in biological chaos, it's like trying to teach a calculus class in the middle of a blazing fire drill.
AdrianOh, that captures the dynamic perfectly.
SarahRight. Like the teacher's standing at the chalkboard, tapping the chalk, saying, okay, let's solve for X, while the sirens are screaming, the strobe lights are flashing, and the sprinklers are going off.
AdrianRight. It doesn't matter how brilliant the lesson is.
SarahOr how much the students want to learn calculus. No one is taking in a single word. You have to turn off the alarm and make the building physically safe before anyone can process a single piece of information.
AdrianAnd the danger of that fire drill is profound. How so? Well, if the teacher forces the students to stay in their desks while the alarm is blaring, physically preventing them from seeking safety, it doesn't just fail to teach them calculus. Oh, it terrifies them. Exactly. It actually traumatizes them further. By forcing someone to talk before their body is safe, you are essentially prepping them in the fire drill and demanding they perform academically. Wow. You are demanding vulnerability while their biology is screaming that they are in mortal danger.
SarahBecause the body doesn't know the event is over.
AdrianRight. The fever is still running. To the nervous system, the threat is currently in the room.
SarahThat requires a massive ego check from us, I think. As the supporters, the friends, the family members.
AdrianIt really does.
SarahWe want to hear the words because words make sense to us. We want to talk it out because that's how we solve everyday problems. Right. But severe distress is not an everyday problem. It is a biological lockdown. And when the words won't come out, it isn't a sign of stubbornness.
AdrianNo, it's not a refusal to do the work.
SarahRight. It is a biological reality.
AdrianAnd we have to learn to respect that silence. The source material warns that overriding that silence is actively harmful. You just cannot process the past if the body firmly believes it is currently under attack.
How Support Changes When Biology Leads
