Starting With No Experience
SPEAKER_00How to start a podcast with no experience. The good news about podcasting is you don't need any. And in fact, it can be one of the best ways to break down some fears around social media in general.
Why Podcasting Beats Social Fear
SPEAKER_00Now I'm gonna do something a little bit different today. I've got here in my hand something we produced from Claude. Claude's gonna tell you how to start a podcast with no experience, except I'm gonna correct it. Because I don't know if you've realized if you're an expert in something and you look up that expertise, quite often AI has it wrong, or at least only part right. So I'm gonna let you know through each of these steps what's valid, what's not, where it needs to elaborate, because I'm guessing this is what you're seeing on your end if you're losing Claude or Chat GPT for this discussion. So here we go. We're
Seven Pillars With AI Corrections
SPEAKER_00gonna go through seven pillars today on how to start a podcast with no experience. So Claude says number one, pick a niche. Most podcasts dive not from bad audio, but from boring topics. As I paraphrase this, they talk about before you spend any time on a podcast, you actually want to deep dive your niche. So instead of starting a fitness podcast, you would actually want to niche down into strength training for women in their 40s, is a niche. It says niches win on YouTube and Spotify. I agree with this on a lot of levels, but I do it a lot different.
Niche Versus A Real Show Concept
SPEAKER_00We do what's called a podcast treatment. So it's not just picking out a niche, it's making your concept an actual show. This takes way more time than just picking a niche, unfortunately. So what you want to do in this phase is revert to one of our videos that we just made about this. But in paraphrasing that for now, we would talk about what is a podcast that you love? What is a podcast that you love in a different category that you could bring some things into your own? What is the framework for each episode? What does the first 10 episodes look like? Who is the target audience? What is the SWOT analysis? What can you do better? What are your weaknesses in starting your podcast? Really start to formulate a plan. If NBC was starting a podcast, would they just start a podcast? No, they'd put some effort into it. So certainly pick a niche, but pick it even better, a target audience and a target persona. We'll go more into that later. The podcasts that actually do this appropriately, Claude is right. They do help train the algorithm and they do present a better value to the audience that's immediately noticeable to get you that home team of followers or listeners. Claude
Naming, Branding, And Legal Checks
SPEAKER_00says, step two, name and brand the show. Don't spend three weeks on naming, it says. You want a great podcast name that you can immediately tell in four seconds. I agree and disagree. I don't want you to get stuck into writer's block on this forever, but I do believe there's immense value in a name. It can be millions of dollars worth of free marketing. The other thing is you want to really think about your target persona and what appeals to them. In this sea of podcast covers, what is gonna make you want to click something? Don't get lost in the masses, and that takes a decent amount of preparation. Also, not something that Claude doesn't mention here at all is you want to look into trademarks around the name immediately. You want to look into domain names around the name immediately. These are things that you're gonna want to actively have within your podcast, not mentioned here. We'll go way more into these later.
Equipment That Won’t Stop You
SPEAKER_00Step three, equipment, DIY versus studio. Equipment will be another full discussion, but in its base, I disagree with a lot of what it says. It goes into a bunch of random equipment that you may or may not need on the high end and low end level. And here's the truth: if it's an audio podcast, then all you really need is a set of headphones. You know, mastering can be done very well these days, and you can create a podcast just walking down the street. Now, when it gets into a little bit higher end equipment, then yes, you've got cameras and microphones and computers and things of that nature. When you're in a studio like we're in now, you have nice, sure microphones, 4K cameras. These are all steps towards making your podcast successful. But when you're first starting one with no experience, the key is to get started. If you can add video to the podcast, that is great because that gives you a lot of marketing speed. We'll do a video on complete equipment breakdowns from a starter level, a media level, and a studio level at a later date. For right now, I just want you to get started. Assess your resources that you currently have and don't let equipment be the reason that you don't get started.
Recording Without Sounding Robotic
SPEAKER_00Step four, Cloud says, record episode one. It says, don't script it, you'll sound robotic, and don't wing it either. I agree and disagree with this. I don't want you to script something because absolutely you will sound robotic. A lot of people try to use the teleprompter in here when they're new and they do come off starting like a robot. I don't let them do it. If you're a seasoned veteran, then chances are you can emote and things like that into a script. But when you're first starting, you want a general idea. And there's a lot of different types of podcasts. We automatically zoom into a guest podcast, right? You do want to be somewhat prepared for your guests. I think the healthy strategy for a guest podcast is knowing the finer moments of somebody's life. You don't want to miss that they landed on the moon, but at the same time, you want to lead in with a little bit of curiosity. This has a lot to do with interview styling as well. But where Claude and I agree is you want at least a little bit of preparation. We'll do a complete video at a later date for preparation because we actually spend hours on it prepping our hosts for a program. So it is good if you can have a teammate that gets involved with the prep, especially if they know what they're doing. Step
Editing, Publishing, And Growth Reality
SPEAKER_00five, editing without losing your mind. Now we're a heavy production studio. That means we use our complete editing team to edit by hand podcasts. You're out there right now and you could use something along the lines of a Riversider descript if you're just getting started. You could also hire a freelanced editor. You could also hire a whole back-end team to complete everything for you, like what we do. So a lot of people will film online or in the studio, and then those files get dropped into a complete team, and that team takes care of absolutely everything for you. If you can afford it, it's the nice option. Step six, Claude says publish everywhere. It says publishing is shockingly simple. Just upload to Apple Spotify, yada, yada, yada. It also mentions YouTube. Extremely important to be on Apple Podcasts, extremely important to be on Spotify Podcast, but there's so much more to it. I actually suggest having a website as a hub for all these things to connect because you do want to be on all the audio stations and you do want to be on YouTube. By that matter, when we're talking about video podcasting, you do want to be filming in 4K if you can, because 4K is the future to evergreen content. It basically means it will look good on a home television, which is the future of podcasting. So although Claude and I don't disagree, I think there's a little bit more complexity than it alludes to here. And we'll get into that on a full video on its own because it deserves it. Step seven, it's so easy, right, Claude? You just grow in 90 days. It's a decent moment to stay here. Consistency is number one in podcasting. If you stay consistency over the long run, it's the same with business, fitness, anything else. You will have success in it. Starting with a good ground level is super important. Claude says it's so easy just to use 90 days of TikTok reels and shorts and be on a couple of guest podcast appearances. I don't disagree with any of that. You should absolutely cut your episode into TikToks. You should absolutely have it on YouTube Shorts. You should have it on Instagram. Facebook is where everybody's sleeping these days. And I know you're gonna argue with me here. It is the one right now that's organicking better than any other platform. I know because we manage 50 accounts. And then a lot of you want to be caught sleeping on LinkedIn and X. And then on top of that, Pinterest. Pinterest is the number three search engine in the world. Google being number one, YouTube being number two, and Pinterest number three. If you can have presence on these platforms, it's gonna help you a hell of a lot more in growing to 90 days. There is another full video there, folks, as usual. And I don't want you to be alarmed if you didn't grow in 90 days. But if you show up on top of these, get some guest appearances, yes, with like-minded and similar audiences, it can help you make some impact and cruise a little bit quicker.
Don’t Rely On AI Alone
SPEAKER_00Okay, folks, so that's the down and dirty of what Claude says it takes to start a podcast. There's obviously a lot more to this. I tried to elaborate on each of the sections that Claude chose to help you, but I figure this is what a lot of you are seeing. I don't want you to completely rely on AI content because honestly, if you do this, you're not gonna make very fast progress. It's not wrong in some ways, but it's missing so many of the pieces. And that's why we developed this video series. So we're gonna check base AI versus the things that happen in actual reality. We are a working daily media company and technology company. So every single day we're seeing new things in the podcast world that we're gonna bring to you through this video series. I
