Mind Twin Movie Night: The Stepfather

For years now, every Thursday, two best friends who find themselves often so in sync they've dubbed the phenomena "Mind Twins" watch movies. Alternating on who picks the movie on a weekly basis, this duo continues on their quest to enthuse about movies in their rambling and unfocused podcast. Because why not?

Happy Father's Day! This Movie Night Mariko shows JD a classic. The Stepfather (1987) from Joseph Ruben! Jerry Blake (Terry O'Quinn) plays the titular stepfather to Stephanie Maine (Jill Schoelen). She is not too keen on her mother, Susan Maine's (Shelley Hack) new husband. Something about him seems off. Could it be that he rambles to himself in the basement? His domineering presence? Or the fact that he may be a murderer? Oh well, it's nothing a gift of a puppy wouldn't fix.

So, uh, 1987, they did do a remake, I wanna say 2009. Um, obviously not as good. But it's really hard to top Terry O'Quinn. Who was on the new the remake? I I don't remember. I saw it once. Um I saw it right after I saw the stepfather. So this is my second time watching the movie.

And I don't remember much about it. I remembered most this movie, because I liked this one a lot, but I didn't really like the 2009 one. And I don't remember too much about it. Back to bed. Um but yeah, actually we should have to be a big thing. During the early 2000s, you know, where they were doing all those horror movie remakes or reboots or whatever, and none of them were really good. It was during that that phase.

I was I was okay with Frightnight, I will say, of that one of the 80s horror remakes I was okay with the remake of Frightnight. I didn't love it. I didn't like or no, I didn't even like it very much, but I was okay with it. I'm like, this is fine.

I did not see the reboot, but I watched Frightnight for the first time somewhat recently. Like within the last couple years.

The stepfather. Stepfather, 1987. Would you like to give the summary since you watched it for the first time?

Uh yes, I would love to give the summary. After a string of mysterious family deaths, a widowed mother welcomes a charming new husband whose obsessive pursuit of domestic bliss masks a violent past. When her teenage stepdaughter grows suspicious and a grieving brother of one of the late victims begins to piece together the truth, the family's dream of normalcy unravels into what essentially becomes a desperate fight for survival, as the men that they try to let into their life and trust will stop at nothing to preserve the idea of the perfect family. Terry Quinn's character gives them a dog, which is the cutest dog ever. I don't know what the dog's name was. I only kept thinking of it as Snephilophagus when I was watching, but you named it during the watch.

It was before your time. So the stepfather is, I think it's it's loosely based, but it's based on a real life killer named John List, who uh I think he was fired from his job, but instead of telling his family, he just pretended to go to work every single day, and then I think he hung out at the uh the subway. Oh and then he'd go home. But it you know, eventually you run out of money when you're the only working person and now no longer have a job. So instead of being honest and taking accountability, he murdered his family and then ran away. And so this movie is loosely based off of that. I think he ended up being arrested. They end up able to find him thanks to America's Most Wanted. Yeah, I if I remember correctly.

That sounds right. I heard of this through a podcast. We all listen to Murder Podcast. Don't pretend you're not. And yeah, yeah, it was something like that. Like him and his wife were watching, and the wife was like, hmm, that looks a lot like my husband.

Yeah, it was something like that. So that's what this is based off of, which I thought was really interesting. Thierry O'Quinn, I think at this point was a character actor. Because originally they were gonna get some big name people to be in the movie, like Anthony Perkins, was you know, he was a pretty popular actor, but then he was casted as Norman Bates, and then he was kind of stuck. And so they didn't want uh something like that to happen. If this is a success, well now this big time actor is stuck being typecasted. So let's look at character actors. And so that's when Terry O'Quinn came in to audition. And the audition PC used was the barbecue scene where they're talking about the murdered family in the newspaper and him making the paper hat was improvised. Oh and that's actually what won him the part was that little bit of oh, that's that's we gotta put that in the movie when we actually start filming that. That's a good idea.

That's crazy. I mostly know I'm from Lost. Yeah, but that's I didn't really pick up on who it was until like like three-fourths of the way through where I was like, oh my god, I know I'm from Lost.

That's the only thing I think of, but I don't see any other purpose to have really anybody naked in a horror movie. Right. My consumer. I guess to get to people horny. I guess that's I guess that's another reason.

And that's fine. That's fine if like honestly, as long as everyone's consenting, it's unethically. I don't I don't care. I sometimes I think we've gone way too far in pretending like we're not sexual entities in movies these days. Um you can do that, but like having her be 16 just with that was like that just I my my brain just like like fucking blew screen to death when I saw that. I was like, what's happening?

I'm pretty sure they were going for vulnerability, and I'm pretty sure, you know, kind of like the shower scene in Psycho. I'm bringing up Psycho a lot.

But Right. The thing is she they didn't show the nudity there as all implied.

Right. But I think they were going for the the vulnerability, you're in the shower and you're naked and you're trapped.

Because he's going up the stairs, he's going after, you're like, oh god, no. I think that's what they were going for. I just don't think it was very successful. And I think the main thing is the fact that she's supposed to be 16.

That's like it's it's really just that. It it I wouldn't be like it wouldn't have fazed me in any other movie, as long as I don't hear anything like scuzzy from behind the scenes, like, oh, this I was uncomfortable in this world, I didn't want to do this. Then I'm like, all right, that's a problem. But like otherwise, like I don't care. But yeah, it's just it's just because the character is underage. I'm just like, yeah, like the character is a child, and I'm like, ah, now this feels a little too leering. So uh as to but I mean, and also maybe maybe I didn't maybe I didn't need more concern for the daughter. I I already kind of was rooting for her. I didn't you didn't have to sell me on it, maybe. But uh other than that, let me think. Um there's um no, I I was I was about to say maybe there was a few scenes where like I I thought maybe uh Terry O'Quinn's character was a little bit hamming up too much, but like genuinely no, I love those scenes. I loved it. I think that those are perfect. I wouldn't change that. So actually, would I have changed anything? I don't think so. It definitely didn't pull its punches with like showing dead kids and stuff like that. So like by setting in the beginning, I made a joke, like, oh, the carpet's ruined, but like I was a little honestly, I made a joke because I was uncomfortable. Like, I was a little put put off seeing dead family and a dead child, especially right there. Like I saw that my heart did a little like oh shit. So Yeah. Oh I don't think they're gonna make it.

Yeah, that's not coming out. Oh, that was all carpet. Yeah, that's fucked. Um, it shows you what he's capable of, so it sets the tone for the rest of the movie, so there's always that menace hanging over it. And he plays likable so well.

I feel like it could be uh because he he's corny, he is. And I feel like that could be really annoying if it was anyone else.

Right. Uh speaking as someone who is corny, it is annoying if you're anyone else. Yeah, so I I didn't I I don't think there's anything I would have changed. Uh the pacing was pretty it was a fast movie, but it didn't linger too long anywhere. It kept things thrilling, had things going in. The cinematography I felt was nice. It wasn't like jump out every scene, but like it was very um it got the job done. The lighting was really good, except for in the house that was the the one house where he murdered the therapist in. The lighting wasn't good there, but I think that that's one of those things where like it's so charming to me because I'm like, that's adorable. It's not like too dark you can't see. And I'm like that and also made me really feel like home. I'm like, yeah, the lighting is bad here. So all in all, no, I I think I I don't think there's anything I would change. What about you?

I think the only thing I would change is I don't think the gym character is really necessary. I you could write him out. I don't think the movie would have changed.

He didn't help. He died immediately when he got there. So he didn't help the main characters. He didn't interact with the main characters too terribly much besides not showing a picture. I f it felt like he was more filler. Uh you literally could write him out, the movie wouldn't change. May I the only reason he's there is because she needed a gun.

Well, okay, it maybe if I can put uh go in defense of that idea. The reason why I liked it is because in movies, again, it it shows that death is a thing. It keeps that reminder uh reminder. Like I I think seeing him kill multiple characters on screen helps. I I also have a soft spot for the Scatman Cruthers storyline. Um I know it's on the book. I know you don't scored me on that. It's not in the book. Spoilers for the Shining book. If you haven't read it, guys, you've gotta check it out.

But like in the the when I talk about Shining, um uh or when I talk about Scat Man Cruthers, I'm talking about the Shining, where uh the actor Scatman Cruthers who plays Dick Harlan. Um, and that he's uh Harlan, is that the right name? Hollerin. Hollerin. There we go. So close. Uh he plays Dick Holleran, who uh gets killed as soon as he shows up. And the reason why I but he his death is like he all he did was bring the snowmobile there. The reason why I like this, it helps fill the runtime, which is good. Uh, because I feel like maybe it would be like 70 minutes. But also, what's it i he's he provides an outside perspective of like people are clearly looking into this eventually, not everyone, but there is like rumblings like this guy is making makes the world feel a little bit more fleshed out. Um, but then he doesn't I like the fact that he doesn't do anything. Like the fact that he dies is because this was the daughter and mother story together, like where they grow past this toxic influence in life and they kill him. So I actually um who who prays on their vulnerability. So for me, if he had done more, I felt like it would have he would have um white knighted it and it it would have been fine. I wouldn't have hated it, but like it it would have cheapened the mother-daughter dynamic as they take him over so or take him out.

May maybe then I it wouldn't have felt like such a blank character. Because I don't know, then at least all the efforts led to some kind of confrontation. The whole movie's built out trying to find this guy just to instantly die. It's just kind of like, oh, okay. Like there had a little bit of a struggle. There was zero struggle. He got stabbed immediately.

I like the music a lot because they do a lot of hard cuts which movies don't normally do. Something or it slows down, something happens. This one will get intense and then just hard cut to the next scene, which is jarring. Which I think helped out a lot. No, I didn't notice that that's a good point. And the creepy whistling of Camp Town Races is pretty famous now. And is referenced in a lot of spoofy stuff. Is it? Yeah. What do you think is the Rotten Tomato score?

Oh, so I actually didn't check it, so thank you for reminding me of that because I was very candidly just going across the Google thing of it. Um, okay. Rotten tomatoes. So Rotten Tomatoes has this theme where if I like something, it means it's 20 to 30 points less than what it is. I had to check out Sinners beforehand because I I loved it so much. I'm like, they're gonna give it. They're gonna like break my heart. They luckily didn't. I'm like, oh. No, Sinners is good. I mean, every movie I've liked is good.

Uh, never seen it. Didn't bother. But maybe I'll watch it someday. We'll see. I have not heard good things about sequels, uh, which is very common. So I'm I'm not in a hurry um to watch those. But they do exist, and it has that woman. Can't remember her name, the actress, but she's got those insane blue eyes. Does that ring a bell, that description? I mean like insane blue eyes. Hang on, kind of picture.
