Mind Twin Movie Night: Serendipity

For years now, every Thursday, two best friends who find themselves often so in sync they've dubbed the phenomena "Mind Twins" watch movies. Alternating on who picks the movie on a weekly basis, this duo continues on their quest to enthuse about movies in their rambling and unfocused podcast. Because why not?

The Rom-Com series continues with Serendipity (2001) from Peter Chelsom! Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) has a chance meeting with Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) in a department store while holiday shopping. They both reach for the same glove, but find they have this instant connection. They stop at a restaurant called Serendipity and get to know one another a little. Sara wants a sign from the universe to know if this could be something real. Unfortunately, due to external circumstances they lose one another in this night, but never stop thinking of one another.

Years go by, but the feeling of something not being quite right continues. They both independently set out on a course to find one another. Will the universe point the way to one another or will they have to rely on serendipity to find one another?

I didn't do ice cream today. I did uh I did mochi. So I had uh melon and strawberry flavored mochi, and then I made a matcha latte.

Well, do you first I should say, uh, also because we didn't say this in the other podcast, uh, spoilers, obviously, major spoilers, uh, if you haven't seen the movie. It's been out for 25 years. You should probably go see it. Uh this is the movie Serendipity. It's by Peter Chelsome, uh, the director. Uh it came out October 5th, 2001. Uh again, it's a rom-com. And it's got, like you said, John Cusack and uh Kate Beckinsale. And the runtime is an hour and a half, so it comes down to clean 90 minutes.

Blind, okay. Well then I'll tell the audience a plot summary when I edit this. Serendipity is a romantic comedy built on the idea that fate has a sense of humor. It starts with two strangers, Jonathan and Sarah. Uh Jonathan played by John Cusack, and Sarah played by Kate Beckinsale, who meet during the holiday rush in New York City when they both reach for the same pair of gloves. There's an instant connection and spark between them. One of these connections that feels like bigger than the moment. But Sarah's the kind of person who trusts in the universe and that it will send signs when something is truly right for someone. So instead of swapping numbers, she suggests a little test. They're meant to find each other again, they will. Years pass, life moves on, and both of them end up engaged for other people, but neither can shake the feeling that they left something unfinished. From there, it becomes a bit of a back and forth uh bit of a chase uh between these two characters as Jonathan tries to track her down, following tiny clues she left behind. And Sarah keeps convincing herself that if Destiny wants them together, it'll make it obvious. Uh the story plays out across the classic New York City background and streets, uh and it involves misconnections and those small coincidences that feel like the universe nudging two people back into each other's life. It's less about these grand gestures and more about the quiet belief that sometimes the right person shows up at the wrong time, and you have to decide whether to trust the signs or make your own.

He's like, I wanna win my uh fiance, wife, whatever, but I want to win uh Courtney back and not uh I want to win some random woman I met seven years ago back. Yeah while I'm with Courtney. So yeah, I'd I I definitely first I'm glad that always movie nights we have that balance where I'm like rom-coms, and you're like, nah, rom coms. And uh I love that. Uh I also think that it's more been or at least it was. The rom coms have changed, but um in the that era, it was like a huge trend. The rom coms had people who are already in relationships basically cheating on their partners, even if that person's a turd, they always like that. So the fact that they didn't actually physically cheat on each other like each other is a bit standout. Uh so like for example, that's why when I chose when Harry met Sally, it's like you know, they don't they're not actually cheating on anyone.

That's a really so um It's a harmless movie. What I would say about the movie, uh, why I I it was actually my gateway drugged into rom-coms. Okay. Uh so I was maybe, oh, I must have been like eight or nine when I saw it. Um and uh I was I was like, oh, that's so wistful and nice. Uh that was a very formative time for me. I was around when I saw Devil Wears Prada 2, or if not soon after. Uh like that few year span.

That's another of my favorite. Like not like like Serendipte, I I actually still really like it, but Devil Wears Prada is like my top five movies of all time. I do genuinely love that. That's a whole other thing. But so why I chose this movie is uh I want the first one to be with Harry Matelli because I love that movie so much. It is perfect, it is like the pinnacle, it's yeah, it's five out of five fake orgasms. Um Serendipity I think is very middling of it, but I I like that it captures that wistful one and it's the gateway drug for me. It was what it was what hooked me into rom-coms, that feeling because the well, I think what I've always found when I watched a movie, which I've seen it maybe five times now, six, seven, maybe somewhere around there. Yeah. If I'm being realistic with the numbers, I feel like probably seven or eight, six, that range. Um one of them, I I think the last time I saw this was around COVID. Uh like in 2020. Dark Times. Or maybe it's yeah, it was it or twenty it was around that range. And uh I got a bottle of wine and I watched it. Um didn't finish the wine, but I did finish the movie. Uh and uh but it worked for me and I it captured that wistful feeling well, I thought. Where it's uh I think that that's what the movie excels at, at least for me. It captures wistful the signs in life are everything because it makes life meaningful. It gives you know purpose and direction. I don't actually believe that, but you know, it's you're, you know, if you look for something, it's like, oh look, there's all these signs pointing me to something. Yeah. But so I I like that vibe with it, and I thought it's a middle of the road, inoffensive rom-com, and very emblematic of rom-coms too. It's not the best of the best. It's not the worst, but it's it's harmless.

And I I do like John Cusack in it. I think he's a good. I think he's uh Yeah He he plays this kind of a character that could come off as really scuzzy, but he does it, I think, in a way that's nice.

To be honest, I don't think I've seen John Cusack in a movie and thought, ugh, John, he's in this. I think I've liked everything I've seen him in. Right. He's a likable actor. Yeah, he does a good job. He brings a level of charm. Even to like there's a few roles he's been in where I'm like, this character could easily just be unbearable. Yeah. Thank God John Cusack is playing. He brings a level of charm to everything he plays. Like the Raven. Edgar Allan Poe. Oh my gosh. He could have been just insufferable if it wasn't John Cusack.

It's not super bad, but it's oh, it's it's what I've seen it once in theaters, and even I thought, like, yeah. That was fine. And it is a very uh Roland Emmerich movie, and I feel like it dates pretty poorly if I were to go back. But uh anyway, this isn't about that. Uh so yeah, John John Kisak is uh is great in that, so I I like him in things, and I thought that yeah, it's an inoffensive middling movie, and that's why I wanted to pick it. And uh I'm also curious, is this the first of my picks that you did not like? I'm trying to think. Um because like Phantom Phantom Mass doesn't count. Um, or Attack of the Clowns. That doesn't count because we knew what we were doing. Like that doesn't.

Um I feel like there was another one, but I can't think of what it is right now. This is the only movie I could think of where I'm like, I don't need to watch this again. Okay. Like I didn't hate it. It's just I nothing it, I guess. Like it's like okay. Uh but if someone's like, hey, come over, and I did like, oh, get us some time, Serendipity is on, I'd be like, I guess we're watching Serendipity. I wouldn't hate myself. It's it's uh it's a a nothing movie, I suppose. Which for for me. I'm actually surprised because uh I have uh three very close friends I've been friends with since middle school. Uh Mackenzie was the rom-com. I I want to say she's the rom-com slut. I don't know what. I don't know why I wanted to say that. She's the rom-com gal. Uh so the majority of the rom-coms I've seen was because she I say she made me watch it. I I watched it willingly, but they were her picks. Um because we don't have the same taste in movies. But I tolerate uh lots. I'm also more open-minded with movies, so I'm like, well, just because it's a rom-com doesn't mean I'm not gonna like it. I just don't typically enjoy rom-coms. Anywho, so most of the rom-coms I've seen were because of her. And this seemed like a McKenzie, high school McKenzie type movie.

Some uh some things about the movie because of 9-11, actually. John Cusack actually didn't feel comfortable promoting the movie when it was going on, especially in New York. Right. Right. He originally uh like was very off-put by that, but then uh changed his mind. He he's he said in like an interview saying that, like, oh, you know, we want the magic of New York to come back, so that's why the movie feels very New York feely. It's kind of a it's a very it was a very tense time to be in New York. And let me tell everyone here, speaking as a guy who grew up on the East Coast, it was a very weird time to play against the Mets. I remember that very distinctly because I uh there are there is no team in baseball. I hate more than the Mets. And even I had to be like, oh damn it. Okay. Uh yeah. New York strengths, they they will endure. God damn it.

Yeah, it was weird. I think about that because I New York teams and I are not friends in any respect. So uh yeah, but um, but so that's a little bit of a trio for you. Um another one is the uh the serendipity restaurant was actually a uh was a restaurant. Um that was there. Apparently, like the risk uh the restaurant uh it's been there since I I think like the 50s. I don't know the exact year, but I think around the 50s. So it's been there for a while, and uh so it they were kind of I don't think they were doing marketing for the restaurant, but definitely profited from it. You get that. Yeah, that's nice. And then uh another thing I'd say is just a side note, our favorite character though in the movie, he's actually played by so Jeremy Piven, who uh there are there are allegations against. I won't say absolutely, but there have been some people that spoke out uh about him during the Me Too stuff uh movement on 2017-2018. Um he denied it, uh, but there were some allegations about that. Uh it does damper it a little bit when watching it, and you're like, ah. Because well, uh uh quite a bit, honestly, but I didn't want to ruin the movie for you by because I want to try and separate art from the artist because otherwise, like every time I've watched like Airbuds, you see the Weinstein fucking name come up, and you're like, Oh not that I'm watching Airbud that much, but how do you know that? Oh, well, I'm watching Airbuds. I didn't say that much. It's my comfort movie. I watch it every night.

But if you're a sucker for rom-coms, you love them, and they make you feel all oobie-goomy inside, then this movie is perfect because it's everything a rom-com is, or what you think a rom com is, that isn't this movie. And there is no in-between, in my opinion.
