As temperatures climb in the Louisiana heat, we follow Tom, the head penguin keeper, as he faces a no-time-left decision and chooses action over helplessness.

Nine months later, they return on a FedEx jet to a welcome only New Orleans could deliver: a jazz band playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans. It was one of the most powerful and destructive storms in American history. And in the middle of all of that chaos, 19 penguins needed someone to do something extraordinary. Their keeper, Tom, showed up.

Why Penguins Matter And How They Live

Penguins cannot fly, but underwater they can reach twenty-five miles per hour. Their wings evolved into flippers, perfectly shaped for swimming. They traded the sky for the sea, and they are absolutely magnificent at it. Male penguins propose to their mates by finding the perfect pebble and presenting it. If she accepts the pebble, they are a pair. Some penguin colonies are so serious about this that males will travel long distances just to find the right stone. African penguins are endangered. Their population has dropped by 70% in 30 years. Climate change, overfishing, and ocean pollution are all a part of that story.

The Aquarium Power Fails

When Katrina hit, the power went out at the Audubon aquarium. In the summer heat of Louisiana, the temperature inside began to rise. Penguins cannot survive extreme heat. Tom, the head penguin keeper, had a decision to make, and he had to make it immediately.

Tom’s High Stakes Evacuation

He packed all 19 penguins into carriers. He drove through a flooded, storm-damaged city. He got them to Baton Rouge, where they boarded a plane to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. Tom had to leave them there and go back to help with the hurricane release. The penguins were 3,000 miles from home in an unfamiliar place without their person. The steadiest one of the group, the oldest, the one who had seen the most and remained calm throughout it all, was Patience. She lived up to her name every single day.
