The start of the London Season of 1816, is when a Rake takes courting seriously. Matthias has contemplated a future without Horatia.

Horatia is in London for the Season with her mother and her friend Clarisse. And is looking forward to hearing news of a marriage proposal.

A carriage ride for Horatia shows the results of being with the ‘Temple of Love’, so should she retreat and concentrate on her other beau, even though she is attracted to Matthias?

A rake hell, as they were known from the 16th century as a promiscuous, immoral, dissolute man, a debaucher and usually a hedonist, so pleasure was the key to their existence. By the Regency era they were called a rake, and some eventually married, so will our Regency rake? Let's find out. In My Rake's Progress. Written by Miss Louisa Ailing. The Christmas season of 1815, and leaving the pursuits of a rake behind, a family Christmas is in order for Matthias, where he can continue to lick his wounds and contemplate his future. The new year of 1816 finds Horatia back in London, after spending the Christmas season with her family and Clarice as a guest, and there is a marriage proposal, but no one you expected. Will love and marriage be in the air? Both Horatia and her widowed friend, Clarice, have gentlemen callers, with flowers from their bows. Will any of them make a move to secure a bride? How do things progress for Matthias and Horatia in chapter 25? December 1815. The Christmas season. After a lot of consideration, Matthias had decided to travel to Kent for a family Christmas this year, as he had neglected them over the last couple of Christmases, preferring to enjoy the company of his friends and his current ladybird, staying in London or at a friend's house party. So, this year he would make the effort to travel home, but just for Christmas, maybe up to the new year, where the permitting and that boredom hadn't set in. There were parties, balls, musicales and soiree galore in London at this time of year, but many of his friends had already travelled to their estates, leaving very little company that Matthias could enjoy, although this evening he had already mapped out. Crystal Venus, Chris as she liked him to call her, was his latest mistress and having sex with her had been quite entertaining. Her rooms were like entering an exotic Indian bordello, draped with brightly coloured silk hangings from the ceiling with gold shimmering metal coins draped amongst them, large metal lamps filled with candles, sumptuous rugs with large silk cushions scattered about the floor and incense burning, scenting the air with erotic perfume. It added to the illusion of not being in a cold, damp England. On top of the environment giving sensual ambience, Chris herself was often dressed in translucent silk draping over her voluptuous form and was definitely game for anything that he suggested, even she suggested some unusual things too. Horatia could not wait to get escape, she was packed and ready to travel with Clarisse back to London. There was to be a party for all her friends, their respective husbands, or fiancés, as part of the New Year celebrations. Arriving in London, Clarisse's family townhouse in Bruton Street, it was made ready for their arrival, and her parents were very pleased to have arranged for them to be installed. The party was the following evening, so settling into their chambers, allowing the maids to unpack and place their clothing items into the armoire was the first priority, then refreshing themselves before going down to the drawing room to join Clarice's parents, Sir Cedric and Lady Alice Aldridge for afternoon tea. After the usual courtesies, Clarice and Horatia sat and Lady Alice, who distributed the tea cups and tiny lemon and honey cakes. How was your journey, Miss Danweek? Please, Lady Alice, call me Horatia. She nodded agreement and Horatia continued. It was a nice slow, steady pace, but we made good time, thank you. And did you have an enjoyable Christmas, Horatia? The home still feels strange without Papa, but we did have some lovely news. My elder brother, now the Baron, Lord Jonathan, announced his engagement to Miss Cynthia Goldman. Oh. Is that the Goldman heiress? Yes, Sir Alridge, it is. I'm not sure I like her though, she's already trying to push me out of my family home. That's not to be born, Horatia. Surely your brother will not allow that to happen? I know he is having the Dower House renovated. I've been told that I shall live with my dear Mama if I'm still not wed once they are married. I'm certain your brother will have the reins on his young wife. Sir Cedric stated. Miss Goldman is a force to be reckoned with, from what I've seen, Papa. Clarice added. She obviously believes her money means she can do and say what she likes. If the new Baron has any sense he should stamp his authority the moment she has put his ring on her finger. Start as he means to go on. I agree. But I'm not sure whether my brother will seize control. She does seem to have him under her thumb already. It might just be a ploy, my dear, to get her down the aisle. Once the deed is done, then he might well surprise you and step up to the job in hand. Let us pray he does, sir. An early night, not long after dinner, gave everyone a good opportunity to get some well-deserved sleep in preparation for the long day ahead. 31 December 1815. New Year's Eve. The day travelled slowly, eventually, they sat for afternoon tea, then they retired to make the final preparations for the evening ahead. Horatia had decided upon a pale sienna shimmering silk gown with old gold lace. Cut elegantly, with a modest bodice, displaying her decollette without revealing too much, her gloves and slippers were old gold colour with Topaz gems on them, to match those in her hair. Once prepared, after the maid had completed her coiffure she left her bedchamber and met Clarisse near the staircase. I love the colour on you, Clarisse. They kissed cheeks in a fond greeting. It really suits your colouring. Clarisse's blue-gray eyes were complemented by the blue-grey silk gown with its silver net over dress, with her dark blonde hair coffered in a becoming style with an elegant twist of silver net ribbon twined through it, looking like a fine spider's web, they descended the stairs arm in arm, Sir Cedric looked up at their approach. Well, my dears, it will be an absolute honor to escort you young ladies to the delights that London has to offer, he announced, as Lady Alice walked out of the drawing room to join them. I most totally agree, Cedric dear. Let us make our way to Trench House. The carriage ride was of short duration across the cobbled streets to arrive at the front steps, the door opened and they were soon being greeted by Sir Harvey and Lady Melissa Trench. The evening started with dinner, sitting down with all their friends and some family members. Horatia was grateful that John and his fiancee had not come up to town yet, but Matthias had attended, and sat opposite Horatia with Clarice on his right and Miss Ava Sinclair on his left, whereas Horatia found the Honourable Randolph Templeton, one of Matthias's brothers on her left and Lord Desmond on her right. The evening was pleasant, they ate, drank, danced, played some games and cards. Horatia kept feeling Matthias's eyes upon her, and he asked her to partner him in the walls. At first no one joined them, which Horatia found embarrassing, but eventually Sir Harvey partnered Melissa and Sir Desmond partnered Clarice. The evening wound down at around one in the morning, although several of the gentlemen, including Matthias, had decided to continue their evening at White's. Horatia left feeling a little disturbed by the evening due to the attention she gleaned from Matthias. Templeton House. Well, I told you before, Temple, you need to act now before someone else claims her. Sir Harvey repeated, exactly what I've told you before. Do not let this opportunity slip you by. I know Trench, but you know I feel I'm not yet ready for marriage. But everyone can see what you're going through, it's obvious. Matthias's cheeks reddened slightly at the thought that the whole Tan knew before he had come to terms with it. Except the lady herself, it seems. Matthias stated through gritted teeth. He dropped his head in his hands as he sat in his favorite leather chair by the hearth. Sir Harvey paced back and forth, then stopped directly in front of him. I never put you down as a coward, Temple. So, why do you hesitate? What are you going to do about it? Sir Harvey snapped in frustration. You need to marry her. Simple. Matthias ran his hands through his hair in frustration, then he slowly lifted his head to look up at his friend, then he abruptly stood and stalked up and down the room on the thick Axminster carpet with its colorful Persian motifs. He reached the window and threw his head back, placing his fisted hands by his sides. Damn! Bloody hell. Damn it, he shouted at his own frustration. You do realize that Biddifoot is sniffing around her skirts. Last night at the Peterson's soiree he spent the whole evening in her company. But you had better things to do, if I recall, Divine Davini. That old flame of yours? For God's sake, Temple, if I'm not mistaken, you usually do not return to old pastures. What happened with your seven-day rule? Remember, I didn't get seven days with her. She was a virgin. I'd just taken that virtue instead of her husband, I did not return, and it was six years ago. As she was married to Montrose, I thought that she'd already been visited by her husband in her bridal bed. How was I to know that he was visiting his mistress, leaving his young bride alone, untouched? She was lonely and I was up for what I could get. Anything to try and slake this torturing lust. Well, with your philandering, someone could easily pip you at the post, old man. You've a lot of ground to make up if you want her for your wife, but once you're engaged, you could make it a long engagement, and still have your fun without planting your seed. Matthias turned to face his friend. But will she have me, Trench? Now that is up to you to find out. Sir Harvey blew out air from his lungs, then lifted his eyes to Temple. I could see if Melissa could do some digging for you. That would be a start. You must realize that if Biddiford is making a concerted effort to win the lady, you have to work harder. Yes. Yes, I understand. Thank you, Trench. A long engagement might be the answer. Maybe a year would be sufficient time. Matthias strode to the commode and poured two brandies and gave one to Sir Harvey. Let the battle commence. They tapped glasses, threw back the liquor, and they were soon out of the doors to White's. Aldridge House, Ruton Street. As morning calls went, this one on a wet Saturday afternoon had been fairly successful. Several ladies of the ton had appeared, including Lady Cooper, who was encouraging the young ladies to apply for vouchers for Almux during the coming season, and so were a number of eligible gentlemen that included Viscounts Biddiford and Bembridge. The room was scented with several gifted, but ostentatious, floral arrangements that filled the air, making Horatia feel a little nauseous. So, Miss Stanweek, will you be at the Manfred's Musical this evening? Biddiford asked. I'm unsure, my lord. Lady Alice was contemplating the Huxley's soiree, I believe. Horatia replied, That is correct, is it not, Clarice? Yes, that's right. My mother feels it would be more entertaining for us all, not that she dislikes musicales, but she has attended many and would prefer a soiree this evening, especially as my father plans to attend, and he enjoys a few card games with the other gentlemen present, you see. Clarice replied with a broad smile, as she had noticed Lord Templeton's eavesdropping and trying to be inconspicuous. Well, hopefully I will see you later then, Mrs. Pembroke, Miss Stanweek, good day. As soon as Biddiford moved from the room, Matthias made his way towards where they sat. Good afternoon, ladies. I hope I find you both in good health. Good day, my lord. Clarice replied, and looked at Horatia. I've just noticed my mother needs my help. If you'll excuse me, my lord, I will be but a moment. Clarice stood curtsied and made her way across the room to her mother's side. Miss Danweek, may I? Matthias indicated the place on the sofa that Clarice just vacated. Why? Of course, Lord Templeton. Matthias sat himself next to her. They both sat there in silence, sipping from their cups, neither knowing what to say. He cleared his throat. Miss Danweek, I are, I wondered whether you would do me the honour by accompanying me for a ride in the park tomorrow? I'm sorry, my lord. His face tightened on her words, but she continued, but I do not have a mount in the stables here in London. Apologies, you misunderstand me, Miss Stanweek. A relieved smile touched his face, a drive in my carriage. Ow, I see. A carriage ride. Why, yes, my lord, that would be most pleasant. Thank you. So, Miss Stanweek, shall we say two o'clock? Yes, my lord. Please call me Temple, Miss Stanweek, everyone does. Temple, then. Until tomorrow, then. He bowed over her hand, placed a kiss on her knuckles, and gave her a devastating smile, then turned and promptly left the room. Clarice sat there beaming at her, as Lord Lacey and Lord Desmond also took their leave, then she returned to her side. Well, looks like you have a couple of handsome bows interested in you. I hardly believe that Temple is interested in me after all this time. No, he's probably going on to his mistress's house straight from here. You know what a rake hell he is. If he had been truly interested in me, he would have made that fact known a lot sooner, do you not think, Clarice? Well, how are we to know what goes on within the masculine brain where women are concerned? They are a different species, Clarice declared, then sipped her tea with a thoughtful expression. I believe you know Lord Highcliffe fairly well, Horatia, what do you know of him? Horatia looked into her friend's eyes, trying to read the reason for her inquiry. Well, yes, he is a friend of my brother Russ. He is a very handsome, reliable, a respectful man, in fact, he is quite the gentleman, you know. I like him very much, why do you ask, Clarice? He's just asked me to take a turn around the park tomorrow. He seemed quite genuinely nice. Oh, he is. Do you like him? I think I could, but I feel that it dishonors my dear Virgil. My dear, if Lord Desmond is thinking of courting you, you will just need to inform him of your situation. But knowing him, he is already aware, so will not rush you or disrespect you by causing you to break with propriety. Horatia took a sip of her tea, whilst studying her friend. Lord Desmond would be a good match for Clarice, she decided. Lord Desmond would love to defend and protect her. In fact, it would be an excellent match for them both. She smiled, as she took a further sip, before placing it with its saucer back onto the mahogany pie crust table at her elbow. Later, after dressing for the evening out, they partook of an early dinner to venture out to the Huxley's residence and Lady Huxley's soiree. Horatia was aware that Lord Biddiford would probably be in attendance, after asking whether they were attending the music hall or the soiree, so there's no surprise to find him hovering near the entrance to the large drawing room after the receiving line. He pounced on Horatia the moment she walked in with Clarice. Miss Danweek, such a pleasure to see you again. He took Horatia's hand and bowed over it, then turned to Clarice, took her hand and bowed over it. Mrs. Pembroke, a pleasure, madam. Lord Biddiford, a surprise to see you, as I thought you were for the musical this evening. Well, Mrs. Pembroke, there seemed to be that better society was to be had at this soiree this evening, so hence I am here. He smiled, his eyes turning to Horatia. Would either of you ladies like a refreshment? A ratifea for me, my lord. Horatia replied. And for me too, my lord. Lord Biddiford strode away and suddenly Lord Desmond was beside them, as he had just arrived and spotted them immediately that he'd entered the room. Miss Stanwyek, what a pleasure to see you both here. Mrs. Pembroke, a real pleasure, madam. Horatia watched them both, as Lord Desmond performed the courtesy of his greetings. She was fascinated to observe the byplay that went between them. Yes, they would definitely make an ideal couple, she said to herself, as she smiled. A slight commotion of the entrance doors made everyone pivot to look for the reason behind it. It was Temple. Lady Huxley was fawning over him, he just stared ahead with a look of ennui on his face, his eyes found hers. His face softened a little until he saw Lord Biddiford returning with glasses for the ladies, his expression hardened again. He was being guided in the direction of Lady Huxley's daughter, Betunia, who stood with her brother, Peter, near the hearth. The evening slowly worsened. Matthias had his obligatory dance with the host's daughter, then disappeared into the card room, but returned when it was the supper waltz claiming Horatia from under Bidiford's nose. Bidiford was put out, but tried hard not to show his ire in front of Horatia. Clarice seemed to be enjoying Lord Desmond's attentions, and she noted that Clarice's parents were pleased too. Horatia could not wait to return to the Aldridge house, and Matthias left early, as he could not bear to watch Biddiford making advances on his P. Hen. This needed to change.
