Hello and welcome to Camp Icons. I'm Nick. And I'm Liz. You're very bright today, Liz.
SPEAKER_00I'm a bit bright, aren't I?
SPEAKER_01You are, you're a a technicolor jumpsuit.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I have got a jumpsuit and it's sort of tropical themes.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and you've got matching rims.
SPEAKER_00My glasses. I'm so sorry, that took me a second.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't calling you a car.
SPEAKER_00That's absolutely the rims I was thinking of. Yes, I got this in a supermarket and someone said, Oh, as they checked me out, they're like, Oh, that would be nice for your holidays. And I didn't have the heart to say, I don't go on holiday, I'm just gonna sit around the house in it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, fair. Why not?
SPEAKER_00I d I tell a lot of lies to people checking me out at the supermarket, you know.
SPEAKER_01People checking you out at the supermarket. What supermarkets do you go to?
SPEAKER_00No, I've haven't, this has been a long time. No, the cashier, I tell them a lot of lies.
SPEAKER_01Right, okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I once in a supermarket, uh there was someone serving me that I went to primary school with and they told me what my name was. They were like, Oh, you're that person.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And my response was no. Do you want to talk to him? I was like, Yeah, you've got the wrong person. Stop. No, and she was like, Well, I think you are. And I went, I know that I'm not. Oh they absolutely knew for certain. Oh, they are yes, they absolutely knew for certain. But anyway, um what are we doing today? That would be great. It'd be great if we were doing supermarket sweep, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_00Oh, why aren't we? Oh that actually sounds like a great, a great thing to do.
SPEAKER_01Well, not today. Today we are looking at a classic film from 1969.
SPEAKER_00It's a campier.
SPEAKER_01It's a very campier, uh, matron. We are looking at the film Barbarella. So Barbarella takes us into the realm of sci-fi.
SPEAKER_00She does, but I have to say, in quite a camp way.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's some of the campest sci-fi I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I put the camp much, much ahead of the sci-fi element.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that's true. I mean there are spaceships and there are Are there aliens? They all look remarkably human, don't they?
SPEAKER_00They are alien. Yeah. They are aliens, but the thing is, the budget doesn't allow them to be in full, you know, full transformation. So you just have to accept that somebody who has a plastic horn on her head is a different species.
SPEAKER_01This is true. And she hasn't always got that horn on.
SPEAKER_00No, it's a removable horn.
SPEAKER_01Or retractable.
SPEAKER_00Oh. Oh, what's it doing? Oh, that makes me think about it in a different way. Okay.
SPEAKER_01We start in the campest way possible.
SPEAKER_00It's an iconic opening sequence.
SPEAKER_01We open in a room on a spaceship with a room divider that is decorated with the painting Sunday in the park with George.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01There is a statue, and it looks like someone has skinned Bungle from Rainbow and hung him on the walls. The whole thing is covered in furry brown walls.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it's very particular brown that I think they only had in the 60s. Yes. They probably the probably the dye doesn't exist anymore. Yeah, and and I think when we think of like space travel, we think of very shiny sort of steel element.
SPEAKER_01High tech, futuristic.
SPEAKER_00Whereas they've just done all the walls out in this kind of shagpile fur.
SPEAKER_01Well, she lives in a brown furry box.
SPEAKER_00She does, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yes. She does. Initially we don't see her though, because there's just a floating spacesuit.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Which starts to be taken off very slowly.
SPEAKER_00Mmm. Seductively.
SPEAKER_01And we realise, shock horror, it's a woman.
SPEAKER_00Yes, because we see our lovely manicured nails come out, and it's essentially a strip tease out of a spacesuit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, basically.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what was really because I I remember watching this when I was a kid. Well, I say a kid, like a teenager, I guess. And I loved it immediately, and I loved it straight away from this sequence. I didn't need to see the rest of the movie, I was already sold.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, fair.
SPEAKER_00Um but what really disappointed me was watching it now, because I thought she was floating around in zero gravity, and I was really impressed by that. Now it's incredibly obvious to me that she's just rolling around on like a plastic floor and being shot from above.
SPEAKER_01I did not realise that.
SPEAKER_00It's so obvious to me now that she's just in the same way that Batman, you know, walks up walls, is just turning the camera angle.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_00We're just seeing her from above and she's on a plastic floor. Oh, and uh yeah, I didn't realise that at the time, but it really stuck out to me this time.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna have to go back, I think, and have another look at that.
SPEAKER_00Well, what were you distracted by?
SPEAKER_01I was distracted by the painfully slow facial reveal.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes, it does take a while.
SPEAKER_01Because she's got like a globe on her head, like a sort of spaceman helmet. Yep. But before she can take it off, it has to it's black and the black has to descend.
SPEAKER_00It's like a metallic inside, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that has to descend to reveal her face. Yes. But my goodness it's slow.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think, you know, nowadays, all you kids with your TikToks and your super fast editing, you aren't you know, this is this is uh a tease, you know. Ooh, is it Jane Vonda? You know it is, you came to see her, but wait for it.
SPEAKER_01It is a tease, but it's a tease to a point that I think I would go, oh I just don't care.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. No, I absolutely agree, it does take too long. I think that's the only way they could do that effect. They were probably so impressed with it at the time. Probably. And so when we say a strip tease, we do mean fully absolutely billybollocks.
SPEAKER_01She is butt-naked underneath that.
SPEAKER_00Nothing under the spacesuit.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Which seems like a choice, bold choice. Um I just feel like a spacesuit's quite functional, might be a bit abrasive. Not not even a sight of an undercracker, there's nothing there.
SPEAKER_01No. And as you've mentioned, it's Jane Fonda.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And Jane Fonda, I would say, is as well known for her activism as she is for her acting roles.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And it's quite startling, I think, to see Jane Fonda gratuitously nude.
SPEAKER_00I have a lot of thoughts about that, actually. Firstly, I don't think she's known for her activism at this point.
SPEAKER_01Right, okay.
SPEAKER_00I think that comes later in the 70s.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I love that it's Jane Fonda in this role, because although I don't think she's known for her activism, I think now the person they would put in this role is like 22 and it would be totally exploitative of a very young actress trying to get her naked at all points. And that is what they're doing to Jane Fonda because the sex and nudity is a big component of the whole film. But Jane Fonda is so cool and so funny and comedic that she brings this other element to it. She's 31 when she films this. She's 31. Yes. And she feels to me like a woman, not like a kid who doesn't know what she's doing. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01I know exactly what you mean.
SPEAKER_00I love her in this role. I think without her, I wouldn't want to watch it at all. It would just feel like an exploitative like sex comedy from the 60s that needs to be forgotten. But she is so good that I think she just brings this element to it of just being in control of herself, very like self-possessed and whatever.
SPEAKER_01There is sort of a she's always sort of got a little bit of a wink going on to the audience.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely a wink.
SPEAKER_01She she knows what's going on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, totally.
SPEAKER_01And she plays up to it and plays into it whilst also still managing to go, I know. I know. I know.
SPEAKER_00Isn't it a lark? And on the scale of gratuity, alright, now listen, they were filming this thinking it was going to go to cinemas, they weren't imagining me with my pause button trying to see if we get catch minch, right? They weren't imagining that they didn't foresee that future.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Right? So, yes, we do see nips, okay, of boobs, but there isn't any lingering on bum or front bomb.
SPEAKER_01No, this is very true.
SPEAKER_00But but it is clear that that there's a glimpse, there's a glimpse, a hint of a glimpse.
SPEAKER_01I think the reason that I say gratuitous is because as the scene develops, her very gay-sounding computer pipes through a message from the President of Earth.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it is the President of Earth.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and she says, I'll go and put some clothes on, and he says, No, don't worry.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, I love it. He says, says, No, don't worry.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So she just does the whole scene completely shut naked.
SPEAKER_00She takes a call from the President of Earth.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Totally naked. And um he gives her a mission. And I think also at the end, there's sort of like a, you know, when you're in town, we must meet up. Which is, yeah, what we're supposed to gain from this, I believe, is that we're in a totally different society.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Where it's very free love, there's nothing to be ashamed of by being naked. They say love as a greeting to each other. And some of the stuff that they talk about, because he's talking about her being on a mission to find this guy, Jaran Joran.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Who's invented a weapon and she's Posatronic Ray. She can't believe that there are weapons. Who would want to invent a weapon?
SPEAKER_01No, this universe has been pacified for centuries.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so it's all free love and hippie shit now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. He's talking to her breasts.
SPEAKER_00Yes, but in Venice, that actor didn't know how they were going to edit that scene together. No, but he is Somebody has edited the eyeline to her breasts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's just talking to her breasts. She's got big 60s hair.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Oh, I love the size of her hair. It's so big. Oh, I wish my hair had ever been this big. It's amazing. It she is the like the prototypical 60s sort of sex kitten. Yes. And this kind of this is it. This is everything you could want. I mean, hopefully we'll get into her fashion because at the moment she's not wearing any, but there is iconic fashion to be had.
SPEAKER_01Well, she's about to put on a black plastic bodysuit with sculpted breasts.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes. I realise as this as this uh episode goes on, me trying to cling to this as a like a feminist statement is just gonna evaporate. But well, you say that.
SPEAKER_01I do think there are things about it that are quite feminist. Yes. And we will get to them.
SPEAKER_00I do as well, but it is it's nuanced. Whereas this costume isn't.
SPEAKER_01No, right now we've got plastic sculpted tits.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and a sort of um most of the most of the costumes that she wear, the the basis is like a body stocking.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00So she's got sort of like black tights and then yes, whatever the whatever the other part is.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I I would just like to throw in that she when she's doing the initial spacesuit stripping, she's doing it to a song called Barbarella.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01In which they rhyme the word Barbarella with Psychedella.
SPEAKER_00Mmm, nice.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_00I think that shows a you know a freedom with the English language that we've forgotten how to do.
SPEAKER_01Sure. She talks to Alfie, the gay computer.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And says she sets the coordinates for I think I think they said Tau City.
SPEAKER_00Tau Ceti.
SPEAKER_01Tau Ceti.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, forgive me. I struggled with some of the place names. For a while, I thought later on in the piece they were going to Sodor.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And I couldn't remember where I'd heard that before. Yes. And that's where Thomas the Tank lives, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's Thomas the Tank, yeah. No, I think that um much like Duran Duran, which is pronounced differently by different people, there isn't a strong continuity element to the uh to the subject matter.
SPEAKER_01She puts in the coordinates and she tells the computer, wake me up in 154 hours.
SPEAKER_00And then she goes to sleep face down on some acetate.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which isn't how I'd sleep for the floor.
SPEAKER_01Pushing everything up against that acetate. Yeah, they mention it. Then the camp computer sings her awake.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella.
SPEAKER_00Um I yeah, so in terms of campness, a computer singing you awake is quite an interest interesting choice for sci-fi.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I I don't think they do that in Star Wars.
SPEAKER_01But I don't think they do either. Here it works.
SPEAKER_00And I think all the computers Don't say they're all straight, because I will bring C3PO up.
SPEAKER_01I'm not gonna say they're all straight, but they are all given a more stereotypically masculine voice.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01C3PO is the exemption. I think.
SPEAKER_00Okay. He's a droid anyway, so maybe there's different rules, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01So I want to bring another question up now that we've discussed before.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. And I I want to keep coming back to this question as well. Who is this for?
SPEAKER_00It's a good question.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I feel now that it's for me 100%. I love the movie. But I wonder if at the time I'd been an adult woman when it had been released, I would have hated it. Because I'm not the Jane Fonda type, right? I can't ever look like this.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And so my I might have been angry at the kind of constant objectification of her and not seen, as I say, the nuanced side of how like funny and cool and you know, like forthright she is. So I assume they made it for men, thinking men will like to look at Jane Fonda being sexy around the galaxy or whatever.
SPEAKER_01This is what I assume.
SPEAKER_00But it's so camp.
SPEAKER_01Everything that is going on beyond her nudity, at least from today's perspective, we don't go, this isn't what a cis heterosexual man wants to see in his sci-fi.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think the sci I think that sci-fi's aesthetic has evolved over time.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01But then I also know, I at least I think, and I know that you're more of an expert on this than me.
SPEAKER_00Here we go.
SPEAKER_01The original Star Trek wasn't quite this camp.
SPEAKER_00No, so interestingly, the original series of Star Trek predates this by a couple of years.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it isn't quite as camp, but I would say that a lot of 60s TV is camper than we would accept now, or other people would accept. I'd have I'd obviously accept anything. Um but they they kind of fought for that because original Star Trek had like three pilots made because they couldn't get it right.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And the first one they wear incredibly boring outfits and the women wear exactly the same as the men. Yeah. And then in the the Kirk version that became Star Trek, they've they've brightened up the colours and the women wear mini skirts, and people often criticise that now, not realizing the actresses themselves asked to wear those because that was in fashion and they wanted to look fashionable. And so they we have the we have this constant kind of merry-go-round on like the aesthetics of what women should wear, of they should be more covered up or we should be more free to, you know, wear less. And it's it's it's a constant distraction from like rights and whatever because it's just aesthetics. But yeah, the the Star Trek had elements of camp, I would say, certainly, and there's there's a silliness and there's a lightness and that sort of stuff. I really I'm a huge fan of original Star Trek, and I feel sad that everything had to get blander and you know tamer. But original Star Trek had a huge uh like female fan base. They were the original trekkers who started up the van clubs and they they wrote slash fiction about Kirk and Spock being together, and that it was it was a female fan base, and it was it was championed by Lucille Ball.
SPEAKER_01Oh really?
SPEAKER_00Her company, her and Desi Arnez, Desi Lu, they championed Star Trek and they also championed Mission Impossible. Both of those involved teams of men and women, black and white, working together. And this is in the 60s in America, and it was hard to get that on screen, and that's what they wanted to see. That's what they wanted the future to look like. So I've gone about this all day, but I d I do think there's a camp element that was more normal in 60s TV, yes, but I think here there's a kind of European kind of vision to some of this, yes, so it's a lot of different types of things. Which is a more unusual it adds a whole different aesthetic to it, and it is it's very like it's very out there and the sex you didn't get the this much sex. I think only only really Kirk is having sex in the original story.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Just so we know he's a red-blooded male. Um which you know they had to have one. But yeah, the the the this this is much more sex focused.
SPEAKER_01Oh yes.
SPEAKER_00I I like that. We'll talk about that a lot probably.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So she wakes up, there are magnetic disturbances.
SPEAKER_00Wh which is awful when that happens.
SPEAKER_01And she falls about the room. Yes. That that I did notice. She was just they were moving the camera to make it look like it was going all over the place.
SPEAKER_00A lot like classic Star Trek. The the effects were whatever you can do. So yeah, she's just got to throw herself around. But luckily it's nice and furry in there, so she's not gonna get hurt.
SPEAKER_01No. She does an emergency landing on Planet 16.
SPEAKER_00She still has time for a costume change, doesn't she?
SPEAKER_01Well, she does the emergency landing first.
SPEAKER_00Right, yes.
SPEAKER_01And she has to do that because of sci-fi nonsense.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01There's a lot of sci-fi talk about polarities and I didn't write it down.
SPEAKER_00No, no.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00I just know she came out in a tinfoil cape and bikini.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, silver sequins in a netted bodysuit.
SPEAKER_00Again a bodysuit, yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. At this point I noticed that it's a big pink ship.
SPEAKER_00Mmm.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And she's greeted by creepy twins with I describe them as housewife haircuts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've just put bad wigs. But they've got huge wigs on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And they they they're talking, but they don't speak English, obviously. It's not Earth.
SPEAKER_01It's Planet 16.
SPEAKER_00It's a sort of icy planet. And yes. They seem threatening, but we don't really know how they Not yet we don't. No.
SPEAKER_01They knock her out with a snowball.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Then capture her and put her on skis driven by a stingray.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so Campwiss, we're really hitting it now. And they they they set this scene of her being taken, half concussed, by the freaky little twins and the manta ray or whatever it is, um, to really jaunty music.
SPEAKER_01Yes, with uh Christmas jingle bells playing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think I so at this point when you say who is this for, and we d I we don't know, it how funny is it supposed to be, is my question.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because this is clearly a funny choice, this music. It's not a seri like a scary kind of oh what's gonna happen music. They're it's they're making fun.
SPEAKER_01They are, and thinking about it later on, and again we'll get there, I've said that so many times today. My favourite sequence in the film is pure comedy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well we'll get there.
SPEAKER_01We'll get there.
SPEAKER_00But there's definitely they want they want it to be serious at times. Yes. But there there is definitely comedy here.
SPEAKER_01Yes, including the line, but I haven't skied in ages.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah, that's a funny. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's that's that's your problem, is it?
SPEAKER_00No, no, she's doing a funny, she's doing a funny.
SPEAKER_01They they take her to what we discover is Duran Duran's spaceship.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Which is inhabited by more creepy children.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, again bad wigs.
SPEAKER_01Very bad wigs. Just huge. And weird smiles.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh, children are freaky. See, this is where they're aliens, right? Yes. So you can't necessarily haven't got the budget for, you know, hair and makeup to make them into aliens. So just choose kids because they're weird.
SPEAKER_01Adult hair on them over there. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00Again, I think Classic Star Trek probably did that in an episode.
SPEAKER_01They tie her to a pole and line up weird dolls that have got big chompy metal teeth.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So they they look almost like normal ceramic dolls like your nana would have had on the shelf, but they've got these metal chompers that are coming for her. It's quite a bad threat, really, because the dolls are only, you know, like a foot off the ground. So the amount of damage they can do is limited.
SPEAKER_01I did wonder why she didn't kick them.
SPEAKER_00Yes, kick kick the shit out of them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because they advance on her.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They draw blood without actually biting her.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And the blood is it looks like poster paint.
SPEAKER_00It's sixties sixty blood, yeah, yeah. They haven't invented um bright red. It's just red paint, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And the sadistic children are happy.
SPEAKER_00Yes, they're happy with that. They like that.
SPEAKER_01They're overwhelmed.
SPEAKER_00Again, we d we don't get dialogue from them, I don't think. It's just um we can tell.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Then a furry man arrives.
SPEAKER_00Right. This this I I love. Okay, we're almost at my favourite scene. Okay. Um yeah, a man comes in full fur.
SPEAKER_01The catchman.
SPEAKER_00He yes, he calls himself the catchman. When we do speak to him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01He nets up the children.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. I've written at this point, because he uh there's a scene where there are blue rabbits in the background for no reason. Yes. There's never a close-up on the of them. But they have dyed those rabbits blue and then just got them to hop around.
SPEAKER_01Just alien, innit?
SPEAKER_00It's alien.
SPEAKER_01Alien, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And she says, Can I I I just need to adjust my tongue box?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which isn't a euphemism. No. Strange. I know.
SPEAKER_01It's what she actually calls her language device.
SPEAKER_00Yes. This is a classic trope of sci-fi, is the device that allows everybody to be understood in English.
SPEAKER_01I wrote at this point that her tights are ruined.
SPEAKER_00No, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the dolls have been out those.
SPEAKER_00There's no darning those.
SPEAKER_01He tells her that she needs to go to Sogo.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Which is beyond the ice.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So we're in some icy patch at the minute. I can't remember what that's called. The weir. Are we in the weir? Possibly.
SPEAKER_01Possibly. He offers to take her to her ship and help fix it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then gets a really good look at her ass. Did you notice that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes, he's He's quite a character.
SPEAKER_01He is. She's worried there's no wind, and so his inflatable sails are erected.
SPEAKER_00Mmm, yes, he's he's quite And this is quite euphemistic. This is definitely a euphemism. His plastic sail suggestively inflates. So it has sort of tube parts, and at his command, when he needs to take her somewhere, they all stick straight up.
SPEAKER_01Yes, they do. Yes. His catchphrase is I know nothing of these things.
SPEAKER_00I know. He he does say that quite a lot. Because there's now a scene where for helping her, she says, Maybe I could get you some recompense from my government.
SPEAKER_01And he says, You could let me make love to you.
SPEAKER_00Yes, he does.
SPEAKER_01And we discover that sex was proven to be a distraction on earth.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's all gone by the wayside.
SPEAKER_01And so they now take a pill and hold their hands up to another person that they've been matched with.
SPEAKER_00They have to check their psychocardiogram.
SPEAKER_01The psychocardiogram, thank you for that. Yeah. He knows nothing of these.
SPEAKER_00I know nothing of this.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00He says that several times in case you were confused.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. He knows nothing about it.
SPEAKER_00What he knows is the old fashioned way, which he suggests to her, and she's shocked. She says, Nobody's done that for centuries. But and just to be clear here, she's willing to try it.
SPEAKER_01Yes, she has tried it.
SPEAKER_00Has no like rr real reaction because sex is just so normal to them. So she's like, well, sure. Oh, that's not how we do it. I mean, I'm very surprised that you would want to, because only the poor people that can't afford pills still do that. But sure, if that's what you're into, she's absolutely willing.
SPEAKER_01She lays back fully clothed. He says, no, no, without the garments.
SPEAKER_00And then my favourite thing probably in the whole film was.
SPEAKER_01I love this as well.
SPEAKER_00Because he's wearing full furs, because it's an ice planet, and he removes his fur top to reveal that he's just as hairy underneath. Now I have to say, when I watched this, I did think that maybe that had quite a big impression on me as a youth. Because I love a big hairy hole.
SPEAKER_01Oh God, you do, don't you?
SPEAKER_00I'm wondering if it all started here.
SPEAKER_01Are you gonna get one of those suits for your husband?
SPEAKER_00I have to say he's not as impressive underneath. Maybe with some movie magic I could just attach some uh a chest wig to him. No, so he's a he's a very hairy man.
SPEAKER_01Very hairy.
SPEAKER_00I do think they might have upped that hair again. I think it's a visual gag. I'm not sure, but I just can't imagine he's that hairy.
SPEAKER_01So To signify that they're doing it, yes. The the ship starts doing circles on the ice to some quite jaunty music.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I love that.
SPEAKER_01It sort of took me into carry-on territory almost.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, or Benny Hill or something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Barbarella is so thrilled by the sex that she just sings.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, now listen, when we cut back to her, that woman has been serviced. She is so happy. Right, remember, this is her first time doing it properly, right? And she's she's la da da. She is happy.
SPEAKER_01She's very happy.
SPEAKER_00This is a satisfied woman we are looking at.
SPEAKER_01And then the sails de-erect.
SPEAKER_00Yes, they go flaccid.
SPEAKER_01They go flaccid. She puts on a black and white muppet fur.
SPEAKER_00Which seems to have a face.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, that's why I called it a muppet, because it's it's not based on any real animal, but it's very many.
SPEAKER_00Imagine if a skunk was life-sized.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Uh uh person-sized. A skunk is life-sized to a skunk.
SPEAKER_01And we then get a running gag of the tail getting stuck indoors.
SPEAKER_00Because it's a massively ridiculous tail. And i I particularly like the way that the it gets stuck in a door that closes like an iris around the tail right in the middle, and then it has to open up again and it just gets yanked back. I think that's a lovely little detail that you wouldn't have now. And it is camp. It's there's something camp about it. It's all very, I don't know, sexual and ridiculous and unnecessary, but fun.
SPEAKER_01She walks into her big pink box and gets her furry tail stuck.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yes. He's fixed the shit and she takes off.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And then she does something which I didn't really understand.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Which is crash through the ice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Down to her next destination.
SPEAKER_00Well, she I think she crus cries out something like, it's been fixed in reverse. So I think something about how he's fixed the ship for her is different to what she was expecting.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And we get a a shot of the spaceship, which seems to have three tits.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which they look like they're about to overinflate and burst. Um and she crashes through the ice. So I think it's unintentional.
SPEAKER_01Unintentional, and yet she ends up exactly where she needs to be.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01As he cries.
SPEAKER_00Babolo!
SPEAKER_01Into a hole.
SPEAKER_00He does. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I really like him.
SPEAKER_01She crashes into a rocky terrain and has another costume change.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, one of my favourites.
SPEAKER_01This time into a silver bodysuit.
SPEAKER_00Attached to thigh-high boots by a black strap. Oh, didn't spot that detail. Yeah, yeah. I really like it.
SPEAKER_01She passes out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And is found by a bronzed, half-naked angel who runs his hands over her face and breasts.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01He's got a loincloth on.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01He's called Piegar. Oh yes, he's blind. Oh yes. Because initially it just looks like a man feeling her up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was gonna say there used to be an old TV show called Touched by an Angel, which I'm not sure that this is the same meaning. She's felt up by an angel.
SPEAKER_01She is, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Um who um Piegar tells us is the last of the Ornisanthropes, which it's like now Piegar, I really want to talk about this.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Because yes, he is blind, okay. And I would say it's not a sensitive portrayal of blindness. It's uh obviously a sighted actor who just stares into the middle distance.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I wrote stares into the middle distance.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it's the only thing you can describe it really. And he has this delivery which is very I don't know, I suppose it's supposed to be godly or whatever because he's an angel, but it's like it's very one note all the time.
SPEAKER_01I am the last of my kind.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And um he has these massive wings. Yeah. Like they are massive, and she asks, you know, if he could maybe fly her somewhere, and he says, I've lost the will to fly.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00I think anybody who's good at, you know, actually following the plot of a film will know when he says I've lost the will to fly that Barbarella has learnt some things.
SPEAKER_01She's gonna give him the will.
SPEAKER_00She can immediately tell how to um get his will going again. Um So we we do get a little um like more of where we've crashed now.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Her ship is damaged again.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes.
SPEAKER_01And so we have to go and find Professor Ping.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Who is in the labyrinth where lots of people seem to be becoming rocks?
SPEAKER_01They're sort of entombed, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00Some are, and some aren't.
SPEAKER_01And then I also wrote there was a fierce rock headpiece lady.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's I think if you wanted to what like stop and look at this, there are some amazing details in the costuming.
SPEAKER_01Oh god, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Some crazy choices and just wonderful for it. But yeah, the labyrinth, we're told, so she wanted to go to Sogo.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which is where all that is evil is.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Sogo's where everything else is. No, the labyrinth is where everything else is.
SPEAKER_01Anything not evil is exiled from the city to the labyrinth.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so there's a lot of there's a lot of people doing things that I can't identify really here. Just walking about dramatically. A couple of the rock people were getting off with each other, even though they were in rocks. You know, just do what you feel, I guess.
SPEAKER_01Ping asserts you are of the female gender by looking at her tits.
SPEAKER_00But again, he can't do that straight away. He has to put a shot glass on his head.
unknownHe does.
SPEAKER_00Which I think it's supposed to be like an eyepiece, like a like an antiques person.
SPEAKER_01Sort of like a Dalek eyepiece.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, he puts it on his forehead to like increase his brain power. I don't know. Professor Ping is played by Marcel Marceau.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which, you know, is interesting. I don't know a lot about him, but Well, he's a mime, that's all I really know.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He's quiet usually.
SPEAKER_01He's not in this.
SPEAKER_00No, no. Uh there's something a little goatish about him. I wrote Fawn. Yeah, yeah. I don't know that that's intentional. That's just what happens when you put Marcel Marceau in that wig. Yeah. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01He says he can fix her ship, but she'll have to wait. So she again says, Piegar, you could fly me to the city. Yeah, yeah. And Ping says, the angel is aerodynamically sound. It's all a question of morale.
SPEAKER_00Wink wink.
SPEAKER_01So we've got to raise his morale.
SPEAKER_00So she wants to go back to his place, essentially.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which is a nest.
SPEAKER_00Which is literally a nest.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. But then um there's an interruption first.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Because we meet the black guard who are leathermen.
SPEAKER_01They are the leathermen. We I feel like we've made identical notes this week.
SPEAKER_00We're two in lockstep, yeah. I know.
SPEAKER_01Pike car saves her from the leather men. So she fucks him in the nest and sings again.
SPEAKER_00She has to direct him where to shoot because he's blind.
SPEAKER_01This is true. To the right, to the right.
SPEAKER_00And then we well, we get rid of them, so they'll be back because they're they're they're the threat from the uh Soga and whatever. But yeah, we get we get in the nest then, don't we?
SPEAKER_01We do, yes. She's singing again, she's again been very well serviced.
SPEAKER_00And she's got all feathers in her hair.
SPEAKER_01She wakes up and suddenly he's flying again. He's got his morale back.
SPEAKER_00He's flying around the sky. She's in the nest, feathers in hair, moss covering her tits.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And he's just, I mean, I I don't think he exactly does a loop-de-loop, but it's it's it's that vibe.
SPEAKER_01And Ping says, interesting therapy.
SPEAKER_00Even though he suggested it, it's like he knew what was going on.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So Pygar flies her to Sogo.
SPEAKER_00She's in a different outfit.
SPEAKER_01But he can only go from side to side due to technical limitations. He does not get any closer to that city.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01He just goes side to side.
SPEAKER_00Good point. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's m there's a big shootout with the leather men again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they all get got.
SPEAKER_00They they their their crafts are very um fibre glass and inflatable plastic. There's uh a definite vibe of somebody knock those up.
SPEAKER_01Um god, we need ships. She's got 24 hours.
SPEAKER_00What have you got? What can you do?
SPEAKER_01Then there's a very excessive shot of her gun going into his loincloth.
SPEAKER_00Now she pokes it in there without asking.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00In a way that I thought was meant to suggest he wasn't gonna notice. But of course anybody would notice a gun going into their loincloth.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00So he does say, I don't know what he says, he says you know, that's alright or whatever. But yeah, it really lingers. Real it's a real linger on his feathery loincloth.
SPEAKER_01Yes. They arrive at Sogo and they go in via a back street.
SPEAKER_00Mm.
SPEAKER_01And the women flock to Pygar.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. An angel really can't be up in this place. No. It when it is called Sogo because it's like Sodom and Gomorrah. I didn't know that. That is yeah, yeah, that's why. And you you can tell that they've tried to get that vibe because every shot is of somebody doing a weird sex thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, people stare at them, a woman is dead.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she's just dead. And he he goes, I sense danger, and Barbarella's like, No, no, there's nothing, I promise. Don't worry about that, that's just a dead woman.
SPEAKER_01She gets taken by two men and separate her off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they throw her in a room full of plastic bags. Yes, they do. Inflated plastic bags. Inflated plastic bags. Because it's space, you know. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And it all gets a bit, you know, like they're gonna want some sex from her.
SPEAKER_00And then luckily a woman arrives. A woman arrives. This is our first meeting of this character.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Who's got you know a an eye patch and she looks very underworldly and whatever.
SPEAKER_01She stabs the men.
SPEAKER_00Both at the same time.
SPEAKER_01Both at the same time. That's the way to do it. And calls Barbarella.
SPEAKER_00Pretty pretty. Do you want to come and play with me? You're very pretty, my pretty pretty. You're very pretty, pretty pretty.
SPEAKER_01It's all a bit lesbian.
SPEAKER_00Well, I yes it is.
SPEAKER_01And I think that's well, I definitely think that's the vibe they were going for.
SPEAKER_00100%. And I think actually, if if you if you were making it in different times, she shags everyone else. She would have shagged this character, who's played by Anita Palenberg, who shagged half of the Rolling Stones.
SPEAKER_01Okay. And interestingly, it's a dubbed voice.
SPEAKER_00Is it?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's a completely dubbed voice.
SPEAKER_00I at one point wrote down is everybody dubbed? Because I wasn't sure about any of them.
SPEAKER_01No, this character, all the dialogue is dubbed by someone else.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. I get that. Honestly, it doesn't sound like any of them are the right voices, but sh yeah, I love the pretty pretty thing. It's really weird. Yeah. It's creepy and weird, and I like it. And yeah, if you're doing it in a different time, there would have been a lesbian sex scene between these two. If not here somewhere else. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella runs off, and the woman, very importantly, doesn't kill her. She looks like she's about to throw a knife at her.
SPEAKER_00She changes her mind. Oh yes. Oh no, I might keep you, my pretty pretty.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella hears screaming and says a good many dramatic situations begin with screaming.
SPEAKER_00This is this dialogue, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That I think everybody's too big and too clever to write now. Which is just like just so blatant and cheesy, but I really enjoy. Like it's it's funny, it's really fun.
SPEAKER_01Paigar's been captured and is being poked.
SPEAKER_00Yes. She says to a woman with a feather up her nose, have you seen an angel? Yes, she does.
SPEAKER_01Very clearly one of his feathers as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, they're quite distinctive, but they're they're tormenting him. They're not actually doing anything um t terrible, which they could be, but they're they're they're definitely tormenting him.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And then just when it looks like it's about to get a bit terrible, she runs in front of him and sort of saves him.
SPEAKER_00See, this is why I don't, you know, buy this thing of her being like this terrible non-feminist character, because she actually really does have to look after Pygar.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And she does save him in this moment, and she is always on her own mission, although she has sex with other people and enjoys it, and you know, like and you know suggested it with Pygar. She always is still doing her job and she's still actively pursuing her own, you know, agency, her own choices, whatever.
SPEAKER_01And she's not having sex with anyone she doesn't want to have sex with.
SPEAKER_00No, no, she isn't.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00So she so she is um yeah, heroic in this moment and d you know, goes in front of him. Uh but then she makes a poor choice. Yes. Um by backing them into a room, which we hear is the chamber of ultimate solution.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which is not a great name, I probably wouldn't choose that. Um, but it seems like it's a place where you go if you want to commit suicide.
SPEAKER_01It's a death room. Basically, you can choose the scenario.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Really, really n no. Bad, uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's like there's three doors, they've all got different death scenarios before behind them, but every scenario sounds exactly the same.
SPEAKER_00Sound awful. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So she just goes, Okay, well, we better try something, because they can't just come back, they can't go back out again, the door seals behind them. They're stopped by a man with big eyebrows.
SPEAKER_00Oh, very big eyebrows.
SPEAKER_01Who is concierge to the great tyrant.
SPEAKER_00He tells us, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he then explains he then talks about the mat moss.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Which is evil magnetic goop.
SPEAKER_00It's this, yeah, bubbly goop that's is under where they're standing all the time. So they're I I love the sets in this, but quite often wherever they are is is like this weird kind of plasticky world. So they're standing on this Perspecs, which has this bubbling, yeah, almost like lava underneath, but this is the all the evil is coming from here. It thrives on evil. And yes, um the concierge, as he introduces himself, just want to take a moment for his uh costume.
SPEAKER_02Yes, please.
SPEAKER_00Because uh in some ways quite you know fitting for a concierge in a futuristic thing, like a you know, a long white jacket and trousers. On his belly, though, this weird black shape I uh it sort of reminds me of the Sydney Opera House.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, I thought it was like a thorax of a beetle.
SPEAKER_00Right. But really sticking out on his belly.
SPEAKER_01Quite a large beetle.
SPEAKER_00Quite a large one. Yeah, just just an odd silhouette that has never been done ever, I would say.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I like I like things that have never been done in any other you know, time and never before, never since. Never before, never since. I love it.
SPEAKER_01Uh while he's explaining about the Mat Moss, Blind Pygar is in the background staring into the middle distance again. And is suddenly taken up by a net.
SPEAKER_00Which is funny. I don't care what they were intending with that scene, it's funny.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella is shoved down a slide and finds the creepy twin children from earlier in a space bar.
SPEAKER_00It's like um like like if space hippies also had like biker bars. Yeah. It's a real rough place. Like uh even though they're telling us all. This with stuff we've never seen before, you still know the vibe is oh, this is a bad place where bad stuff's going to be.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella is taken by the concierge to the Great Tyrant.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so we've heard about this great tyrant.
SPEAKER_01Shock horror. It's the lesbian.
SPEAKER_00It's Anita Palumba.
SPEAKER_01And in a big unicorn horn and a feather outfit.
SPEAKER_00Now she has a horn.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And she doesn't have the eye patch anymore. And so Bar uh Barbarella says, Oh, you, the little one-eyed wench. Right. Which the the character the great tyrant says, Oh, you have a great memory. It's literally five minutes ago. It's been long. You're the same woman you've just taken off your eye patch.
SPEAKER_01She's still always calling her pretty pretty.
SPEAKER_00Yes, which I love.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I've said that. You don't need to know how much I love Pretty Pretty. But I I've been saying it ever since I watched this about 15 years ago.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, fair.
SPEAKER_00Don't blame you.
SPEAKER_01Piegar's been tied up by the great tyrant.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's more than tied up is.
SPEAKER_01Well, because of crime. Crime. She says things that he's done followed up with the word crime.
SPEAKER_00Crime.
SPEAKER_01And then yeah, it is more than tied up. It's sort of a crucifixion.
SPEAKER_00They've crucified Piegar. Yes. Well I say I say crucified because I had already written that down before I remembered the line is um from Barbarella, she demands decrucify the angel. Yes. Decrucify is just a word you don't expect to hear, I think.
SPEAKER_01No. So then Barbarella retrieves her gun from Piegar's loincloth.
SPEAKER_00Now we know why we had to have such a lingering shot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't think it had to be that lingering.
SPEAKER_00Because you don't want to forget that there's a pistol in his pants.
SPEAKER_01No. And she takes the great tyrant hostage. To which the great tyrant says, My face. My beautiful face. How dare you endanger my face?
SPEAKER_00Yes, well she doesn't want to. She's obviously, I suppose because she's a woman, she's vain, but she obviously this this pistol doesn't shoot bullets, it's like a melty ray. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. The concierge, however, realises is out of energy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so Barbarella is sent to the birds.
SPEAKER_00Literally sent to the birds.
SPEAKER_01And now begins. My favourite. My favourite part of the film.
SPEAKER_00The birds the bird sequence.
SPEAKER_01And what follows. Right, okay. Just this whole section.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. We we are getting into the good stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So Barbarella is put in a bird-shaped glass cage and is set upon by budgery gas.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I read I read a thing that said um the scene where she's attacked by lovebirds, and I'm here to tell you it that is 90% budgies with a couple of finches. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's the budgies that my great-gran used to have when I was a kid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01They perch on her and she bleeds.
SPEAKER_00If anybody's ever had a budgie, they're not that big of a threat, even in numbers.
SPEAKER_01When they but when they said we're taking you to the birds, I was like, oh, vultures, falcons.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01These really hook build uggo things.
SPEAKER_00Listen, even in the film The Birds, they use small birds mixed with some bigger ones, you know, gulls and whatever, but they still seem like more of a threat than these birds, which are sitting calmly on Jane Fonda, enjoying, I think, some uh millet which has been shoved in her costume. Probably. So they're pecking at her in quite a sweet way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00They try and cut it so that there's a bit of a frenzy, but there really isn't much frenzy to be had.
SPEAKER_01It's just footage of birds flying.
SPEAKER_00Birds flying, and then in the middle Jane Fonda kind of doing that dramatic sigh of I couldn't possibly take any more birds.
SPEAKER_01Now then a tunnel appears and she slides down into it's an underground layer.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Where she meets my favourite character. A man in tiny shorts with a moustache called Dildano.
SPEAKER_00He is called Dildano. I really, really was gonna look up the etymology of Dildo before I before we recorded, just so I could know whether it was in popular usage when this was around. Because Dildano sounds so much like Dildo. I was like, is this a joke? Because it's the whole thing is about sex. But um I I've got to do that and I apologise for not doing my research, but oh god, is he a great character? Oh god, he's great.
SPEAKER_01Suddenly we're in a different film. Yes. Suddenly we're in a a comedy film. It's an out and out. This whole sequence is an out and out comedy.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01He tries to get someone to leave via the secret passage.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And the lever doesn't work.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So he just goes, the door.
SPEAKER_00The door. It's uh it reminds me a bit of Doctor Strangelove, actually, at this point. Okay. Because he's he's trying to be a revolutionary, right? Mm-hmm. This is the whole point, is he's he's he's not meant to have taken Barbarella out of here. He thinks that she's a political prisoner because he's used to rescuing political prisoners from this place. And so he's trying to be this great revolutionary, but nothing in his little office, whatever it is, works. No. And so yeah, he's he's played by David Hemmings, which I think he's absolutely amazing in this, because I think I think of him as like a serious actor most of the time.
SPEAKER_01I don't think I've heard of him before.
SPEAKER_00Well, he um I I believe he's passed away uh now, but in the 60s had a couple of really huge films, and I I I can't think of him in other comic roles.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00I think of him as in serious roles. But he in this is so funny and so good, you know, because he tries to keep up this bravado of being this great revolutionary, even though you know he then takes it to the map and the lights on that don't work, and he you know and everything he looks for he can't find, and he's you know throwing stuff around to try and find whatever.
SPEAKER_01She says she must repay him for saving her.
SPEAKER_00Oh my goodness, yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he's so excited because finally he gets to try sex the earth way with the pills.
SPEAKER_00This is the thing she's quite disappointed. She is, she's come round to sex the old-fashioned way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So when she offers to repay him, that's what she's looking forward to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he, in you know, being, I don't know, worldly or whatever, has managed to get hold of these pills and can't wait to try it. So now we as an audience are going to enjoy this pill-based hand sex for the first time.
SPEAKER_01We're going to enjoy it.
SPEAKER_00It's incredible.
SPEAKER_01They take their pills and they place their hands together.
SPEAKER_00He doesn't even take his gloves off.
SPEAKER_01No. And there is, I described in when we watch Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, I described a camp zoom. We get another camp zoom on their hands as they're touching hands.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And suddenly they stare at each other and they're like shifting on their seat. Like you're doing sex moves, but they're all sort of repressed.
SPEAKER_00I think you could do it at home if you twitched your bottom muscles.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that works actually, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_00Not that I've been practicing. I wasn't imagining that I would instruct the listeners in how to recreate the hand sex. But you know, if you've got a loved one nearby.
SPEAKER_01If you want to recreate the Barbarella handsex, put your link in the description. Next to There's no link in the description. Don't.
SPEAKER_00Twitch your ass muscles and have a good time.
SPEAKER_01As Barbarella reaches her climax, her hair curls back up on itself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It properly goes into and this effect they've obviously done by just putting the hot rollers in. That's the best they can do is just have it Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She's finished quite a long time before him.
SPEAKER_00Yes. He's really enjoying it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But even though all he's doing is staring straight ahead, we can tell he's really enjoying it.
SPEAKER_01Well he starts steaming, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_00Yes, that was a sign.
SPEAKER_01And then his hair stands on end, which I don't care what anybody says, he he looks visually funny with his hair like that. So hers curls and she just sorts it out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, she just kind of brushes them out with her fingers.
SPEAKER_01His stands up on end and he leaves it there for such a long time.
SPEAKER_00He does. It is sort of spiked up, almost like like you would get in the noughties with the American postpunk that they did the hedgehog.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's almost like it's almost to that extent. And yeah, it's incre it was not a style of the time, but it looks incredibly funny.
SPEAKER_01We find out he got the pills from Jaran Jaran.
SPEAKER_00Yes. That's a big reveal.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Not that I think really anybody should care about the plot.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not needed.
SPEAKER_00Sidebar.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yeah. Because we've now met our uh three characters that she has sex with, right? We've got the the hairy furman, we've got Pygar, the angel, and we've got Dildano.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00So I think I would like fuck Mary Kill. Your opinions, please, Nick. Because I know mine. I think mine's fairly obvious.
SPEAKER_01Oh god.
SPEAKER_00Come on, I'm gonna press you for an answer.
SPEAKER_01I think I'd marry Dildano for the laughs.
SPEAKER_00I can see you two being married.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think I'd fuck Pygar. The thing is, is uh I'm not I don't find the catchman repellent.
SPEAKER_00No no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01But I I will have to kill him.
SPEAKER_00Somebody's got to come in third place. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There we go.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And yours, just in case the listener hasn't been paying attention.
SPEAKER_00I would marry the big hairy man. Of course you would be. I would uh probably fuck Dildano just for the sake of it. It seems fun. And I would unfortunately kill Pygar because he's bland and has no personality and I don't care for abs.
SPEAKER_01Fair. Um with Dildano, are you doing it the old-fashioned way or the new earth way?
SPEAKER_00Interesting. I think as it's Dildano, I'll do it the hand way.
SPEAKER_01Because he loves it.
SPEAKER_00Because that seems cool. I d I honestly don't have any wish to have sex with him.
SPEAKER_01He does the hand version.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And like Barbarella earlier, it feels like he's been serviced.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That seems so fulfilling to that character. Why would you do it any other way? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella changes again into a secret uniform with moulded breasts.
SPEAKER_00It's just got one um tit out.
SPEAKER_01Yes. One cut-out tit. And then Dildano, there's something about she needs to go into the Great Tyrant's bed chamber.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And the only way to get in is with a secret key.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Luckily he has a secret key.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. He has a proper little box with a pink cushion in.
SPEAKER_01Yep. They then decide to talk to Ping to see if the craft has been fixed.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes.
SPEAKER_01And it has, it's been off to hide, gone off to hide.
SPEAKER_00Yes, he shipped it, sent it away.
SPEAKER_01And they create a password. And the password, I can't say.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01But it's the very long Welsh place name.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01That's got fifty odd letters.
SPEAKER_00It seems an odd choice.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00It's the one that ends goggogogh.
SPEAKER_01Gogogog, yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's the only bit I know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it seems like a strange choice, doesn't it? A Welsh town just cropping up. But anyway, that's the password they agree on. I'm not even clear why they need a password. No.
SPEAKER_01Then they go and get the key.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes, Barbarella needs this key.
SPEAKER_01And the key is invisible.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Again, a great choice, I feel, for comedy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, completely, because she just picks it up out of the box and he's like, No, it's not in there.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00Then he's he's searching for it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh uh Oh and again, he's so funny.
SPEAKER_01And then you get just like a little tinkle-tinkle. She goes up a pipe.
SPEAKER_00Sorry, you just you sold that to me, it's just so inconsequential, which it is at this stage. Yeah, much bigger things are happening. Yeah, she goes up a pipe, sorry, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then there is a naked woman in a harness and a sheesh machine inhaling from a man in a thong in a pod of water.
SPEAKER_00Yes, all the women are smoking essence of man.
SPEAKER_01It just takes a moment, listener, to digest that sentence.
SPEAKER_00Might need a minute.
SPEAKER_01She's then instantly found by the concierge.
SPEAKER_00Oh now.
SPEAKER_01And he takes her for punishment.
SPEAKER_00Now this we need to talk about a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Right? Yes. Right? Because this I I think people this is one of the things they remember about Barbarella.
SPEAKER_01They better.
SPEAKER_00Because the concierge is against her, right? So he wants to kill her. Yes. And the way that he's chosen to do this is to put her in a sex machine.
SPEAKER_01Yes. It but it initially looks like a sort of organ, if you will.
SPEAKER_00I I think you should specify what type of organ you're talking about.
SPEAKER_01The sort of organ one would find in a church. A playing organ.
SPEAKER_00A musical organ.
SPEAKER_01A musical organ, that's what I'm looking for. And he starts playing it and she she quite likes it. She's like, oh, it's quite nice.
SPEAKER_00She's there and she's got this kind of oscillating thing over her body.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And so she is, she says sort of nice, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Then it removes all of her clothes.
SPEAKER_00They shoot out the side. And sixties effect again.
SPEAKER_01He tries to musically sex her to death.
SPEAKER_00Yes. He says at the crescendo, you'll die of pleasure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Which I I would contest this is this is not a great way to ensure that somebody is done away with.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00It is fun though. As a viewer.
SPEAKER_01The machine is littered with bodies around it, so he has had some success with it.
SPEAKER_00He's had some success. I mean when they say what a way to go, well this is what they're talking about.
SPEAKER_01Out with a bang.
SPEAKER_00I I enjoy this. It sort of reminds me of like the James Bonds, where uh you know they're they're gonna do a laser up the middle of uh James Bond's crutch because because it's more fun as a viewer to watch that than just to go bang blasty.
SPEAKER_01Of course, of course.
SPEAKER_00Uh but I love I love I love the ridiculousness of this. I wish we could do this now. Not me in the sex machine. Although, if anybody's offering up ghosts in the sex, I'm willing to risk it. Sorry, what is it you want to do now? I what I what I meant to talk about is how much I want to see camp and ridiculous choices in films because I feel everybody now caters to that person who says, Hey, oh how would that work? Oh, that wouldn't be actually be possible, or why would a villain do that? Because there's much more efficient ways of killing. I don't want people to make films for that person. I want them to make them for me, where I go, you've done something insane. Good. Here's my money. Here is my money.
SPEAKER_01His playing gets increasingly maniacal.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And unfortunately for him, her pleasure threshold is just too high. Because the machine breaks.
SPEAKER_00The machine is on fire.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It starts smoking. I was actually a bit worried about Jane Fonda at one point because the fire seems very close to her.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00And you're not even like they don't even have real fire now. They hardly they CGI it in. Don't don't get me started. Everything was better in the past. Anyway. But yes, she she is so able to take a pleasuring.
SPEAKER_02She is.
SPEAKER_00That she destroys the machine. And again, I am saying, if you know, if it came to it and I had to put my life on the line, I would take I would take a turn in the machine.
SPEAKER_01I don't think your life would need to be on the line.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you're right. I want to go. I want to have a go in the machine, okay? So sue me. So take away my feminist card, you know. So sue me. I want to see how I hold up against the pleasure machine. I just have a feeling I could take it, alright?
SPEAKER_01Uh the concierge then says it couldn't keep up with you. What kind of a girl are you? If you're no shame.
SPEAKER_00This this this is exactly what I'm talking about, right? This is why I love it, and I do think there's a kind of feminist like element to it. Is like that we want to be there's a quite often like feminists that want to be so po faced and suggest that any kind of like sex or enjoyment of sex is is part of catering to males. But Barbarella is in charge of her own sexuality, yeah. And he he basically says, Have aren't you ashamed? Why should she feel any shame?
SPEAKER_01This so this sequence is all about her pleasure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01There's nothing in it for him.
SPEAKER_00I mean she doesn't look by the end like she's having a good time, and to be honest, you know, there's only so many orgasms you should have before you take a break and get some fluids or whatever. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Can't can't relate.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I'm talking uh I talked about a long time ago. Anyway, uh I just yeah, all these ideas of like you should be ashamed and um and and yeah, I know it plays into this idea of she's a a sex machine, which is a male kind of fantasy. But what if if everything is a male fantasy, then women have no sexuality for themselves. And I, as a woman that likes sex, watch that and go, that's funny to me that she's such a killer shag that she survived the machine. I too, Barbarella, would survive the machine. That's all I'm saying.
SPEAKER_01He goes off to get some apparatus to kill her with, and she's had a tracker with her that tracks Jaran Duran.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes. We forgot to mention that, but it's been there all the time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it starts flashing, and suddenly we realise the concierge is Jurandoran.
SPEAKER_00Do you want to talk about the band Jurand Duran at any point?
SPEAKER_01They picked the name based on this film.
SPEAKER_00They did, and they spelt it slightly differently. Yes, which is why I'm saying it's not pronounced the same, because I think there are a couple of scenes where somebody says Jurand Durand. And that is what it is how it you've heard written down. But Durand Duran, it is how it's said most of the time, which is how the band, you know.
SPEAKER_01They they watched the film on TV one night in the late 70s and decided on the name the day after. Interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01The Mat Moss has aged him. Right, yes. And he's gone mad basically.
SPEAKER_00These are the things that have happened to Duran Geran, the character.
SPEAKER_01The character, yes.
SPEAKER_00At this at the point we're talking, Durand Geran and the band have also aged. I don't know if they've gone mad. Only as mad as any other 80s pop star, I think.
SPEAKER_01Who knows? She bargains her way into going into the chamber of dreams. She tells him that she's got the key. I can't remember exactly why, but she does have on a nice little snazzy little green number.
SPEAKER_00Yes, well, obviously she has a costume change at every available opportunity.
SPEAKER_01She's like a pantomime dame.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Oh, obviously, after her clothes being taken off in the machine, she couldn't possibly put the same ones back on, even though there was nothing wrong with them. She puts on this green thing.
SPEAKER_01Yes. That really has come off one of those corpses, let's be honest.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it fits perfectly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What can you do?
SPEAKER_01They get to the Chamber of Dreams, which is a black liminal space full of those early naughty fibre optic lights.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She walks towards the Chamber of Dreams, bangs into something that we can't see, and says, This must be the invisible wall.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And then because she's got an invisible key, she starts searching for the invisible keyhole. Yes. Again, that we're saving a lot of money on effects. You know, all the budget's been spent on the set. The mat moss is bubbling away and all that sort of stuff. So the invisible wall will just do by mime.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, why not? Uh she goes through the door and then the con Duran Duran locks her in and steals the key that's on the other side of the wall. Yeah. So that her and the great tyrant are locked in and he can become the new leader of Sogo so that he can use his positronic rays.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yeah, if you care about the plot, that is what happens. Yes. Yeah. So we're now in the secret chamber of dreams.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and Barbarella searches for the Great Tyrant for quite some time.
SPEAKER_00She does, doesn't she? She has a real good look around. You'd think well, she's got she's well hidden then. She's not, though.
SPEAKER_01No, she's no she's while we're at the door we can see her.
SPEAKER_00She's asleep on the bed about three foot from where we started.
SPEAKER_01Yes, the bed with the arms.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Reaching up to the sky.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, an interesting bed.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Then we see scenes of Durandoran being coronated.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01The labyrinth is rising. Dildano's gone out and found Professor Ping. And they're gonna attack the city. And there are lots of scenes of things blowing up. Duranda Ran is wearing a big purple robe.
SPEAKER_00Yes, he's yes.
SPEAKER_01Quite a lot of the budget went on his costumes, didn't he?
SPEAKER_00He he's kind of well, there's certainly a lot more fabric to buy from him for him than there was for Barbarella.
SPEAKER_01Well, yes.
SPEAKER_00Yes. He's made quite a quick rise to power because um nobody even came to check if the great tyrant was still around.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00I mean she's only she's only gone for a kip. Nobody even knocks on the door, the invisible door.
SPEAKER_01Yes. No.
SPEAKER_00Literally, uh it's almost immediate that he's been crowned.
SPEAKER_01Oh, completely.
SPEAKER_00Well, she has been looking for her for a while, so maybe in the wrong direction.
SPEAKER_01He's annoyed, so he goes to his I wrote evil villains layer because we've never seen this set before.
SPEAKER_00Don't know where this is, no.
SPEAKER_01The positronic ray is absolutely ridiculous. It's like a glass blowers out-of-field day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yes, it does. It's like um it's like one of those things that used to hang down from the um science museum.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if anybody's familiar with that reference. I know what you mean. It's very obscure. Yeah. But yeah, it's it's it's an elaborate well, this positronic ray is actually sort of the p point of the whole thing, is stopping him from using this.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Even though this whole, you know, sort of climax at the end seems to be wrapped up quite quickly.
SPEAKER_01Yes. He wants to use that to obliterate the labyrinth with increasingly mad hair. And the Great Tyrant releases the matmos to apocalyptic effect for Sogo.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01This is the apocalypse, so however, the matmos creates a bubble to protect itself from Barbarella because she's too good.
SPEAKER_00I yes. Yeah, she's too innocent and good. Yes, I would you question that?
SPEAKER_01I think she's good. I don't know that she's an innocent.
SPEAKER_00No, depends on your definition.
SPEAKER_01Well, yes, this is true. I'm not judging her, I'd like to put that out there. No judgment, no. Then we get an insane over-the-top death for Juran Jaran.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'll get you, Barbarella!
SPEAKER_00Then I do enjoy his performance, actually.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's wild.
SPEAKER_00It's the eyebrows are very big.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00They're doing a lot of work.
SPEAKER_01Yes, they should have won awards.
SPEAKER_00And his his hairstyling, as you say, it gets larger the more insane he gets. We do associate like the the man with like big hair as being a bit wild, don't we? Is it an Einstein thing? I don't know. I don't know. It's interesting. But he um he I think he really uh sells this over-the-top character. Like you say, his death is just him going yeah, he's quite fun.
SPEAKER_01Then the Great Tyrant and Barbarella find Piegar, who has also been miraculously saved from the apocalypse because he's an innocent.
SPEAKER_00Now listen, this makes more sense to me because I can see the Matmos spitting him out because he's an actual angel.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00But yes, so we find him now. We're back with Piegar.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella pumps his wings to give him life.
SPEAKER_00Listen, that no, what happens, right? Yeah, is somebody, whoever's there with Barbarella, says, Why don't you give him mouth to mouth? And she says, I've got a better idea, and goes round the back of his body. And I have to be honest, I did have an eyebrow raised at that point. But she pumps his wings, as you say, that's that that is the better idea.
SPEAKER_01He comes back to life and he flies Barbarella and the Great Tyrant into Barbarella's ship.
SPEAKER_00Right, listen, this uh this this is why it didn't make sense to me. That's who they're with is the great tyrant.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Because of course Barbarella and her you I guess because the Matmos didn't want to touch Barbarella.
SPEAKER_01They were and they were in bed together.
SPEAKER_00They were in bed together.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00She came out as well. But then he flies the both of them off.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and we get possibly the most curious ending to a film I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Barbarella says, Hang on, why did you save her?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01He says, An angel has no memory.
SPEAKER_00And that's the end of the film.
SPEAKER_01End of the film. And I also just want to take a moment to reflect on the fact that Yes, it's very light and very camp. By the end of the film, we've murdered every character we've met apart from these three, one of whom I would argue probably is the biggest villain of them all.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Well, yes. Yes. Well, now listen. The Great Tyrant, although she was the Great Tyrant, she was the tyrant of a bad place full of bad people.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And she was somewhat keeping order. So maybe that's good. I don't know. Um but yeah.
SPEAKER_01I wouldn't know an angel has no memory.
SPEAKER_00An angel has no memory is weird. Yeah. Because I don't think I've ever heard that anywhere.
SPEAKER_01And also, he remembered where she crashed her ship. Yeah. Because he guided Ping back. It's just it's so confusing.
SPEAKER_00It's not it's not got anything to do with anything that's happened in the film.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00As well. No. Usually you end on a point that kind of says, This is the point we've come to on the on the particular journey that this film was. Yes. Whereas this is just, well why have you why are you saving her as well? Hmm, bullshit reason. There you go. What more do you want? I'm an angel. I'm just for fucking. Um I on uh yeah, it it ends in a really weird way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I enjoy that. I won't criticise it for that.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm not. I'm not outraged because it doesn't I think it's one of those endings that doesn't um it doesn't sully the rest of the film.
SPEAKER_00I don't think you even remember it. Because I didn't. I didn't remember that. And when you say everyone else dies, I think this is a comic book sort of world. I think Oh, completely. Uh you just bring them back the next week.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I'm not, you know, suggesting we need to sit here and talk about the collateral damage of Barbarella.
SPEAKER_00But um Do you think Dildano died?
SPEAKER_01We see him die. Do we? Yes. I've forgotten and turn green. I've forgotten that bit. I think it's I don't even think that's the mat moss. I think that's in the battle beforehand, the black guardians.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think you're right.
SPEAKER_01The leather men.
SPEAKER_00That is a shame, because I don't like the leather men, and I do really like Dildano.
SPEAKER_01Yes, we've established hand to hand.
SPEAKER_00Not as much as the hairy man, who's my favourite.
SPEAKER_01Let's talk camp, shall we?
SPEAKER_00Okay, I th I think we have been.
SPEAKER_01I mean we have, yes. It's big, it's bright, it's bold.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's over the top.
SPEAKER_00It's camp.
SPEAKER_01It's camp.
SPEAKER_00It's well this is this is why we wanted to watch it, because it's uh it's known as a campy sci-fi.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And I it's interesting to see how camp kind of morphs in different places that it turns up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I think I think this is a very sixties version of it.
SPEAKER_01Completely.
SPEAKER_00I think that that's the thing. More than a lot like a sci-fi version, I think this is a very sixties version of it.
SPEAKER_01Aesthetically, it looks a little like the Jetsons.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Judy Jetson's a lot more covered up.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But it's certainly that sixties space aesthetic.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. And we've talked about like sixties kind of we're talking earlier about like the free love hippie stuff that they start with. And I think some of that kind of blurring of boundaries and you know, different kind of freedom to bend rules and the like systems that are you know hierarchies or whatever, all of that kind of pushing away of that stuff leads you to camp because camp has a freer kind of expression, it doesn't care much for the rules, it wants to subvert things, and so it that kind of makes sense to me. And the sci-fi, I think I I think the ridiculousness of trying to create an entire alien world quite easily lends itself into camp.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's very easy to because Camps kind of is about celebrating non-mainstream. So if you do something that is so far removed from mainstream as create alien planets with naked women housed in rocks, for example.
SPEAKER_00It can go that way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I think it's I think it's one thing that I get sad about in sci-fi is that there's such an effort made to move away from that in a lot of stuff that is done now. It's like we don't want that because we see that as a bit naff and a bit silly. And here they're just going for it. They're just going for whatever. And they're mixing it with you like humour and the sexy stuff and whatever in this way that is kind of just fun and just about you know, expression of these of these things. It's just yeah, I think it uh I think it's very exciting to me how free it is. It feels it feels really free to me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I would agree, definitely.
unknownWoo!
SPEAKER_01So that was the Barbarella episode of Camp Icons. I know I know you've watched this film a lot. Did you enjoy revisiting it?
SPEAKER_00I did. It's been a while since I re-watched it, and now I think it might have had quite a big impact on me. But I can't see that. Yeah, yeah. I'll have to I'll have to sit with that fact and think about it. But I think I'm gonna be re-watching it a lot more. Are you? Yeah, yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_00Thank you, Nick.
SPEAKER_01And we'll see you next week.
SPEAKER_00Bye. Bye.
