00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:17.920 We have been hearing about Mike's church plant for over a decade. 00:00:19.679 --> 00:00:28.800 So, you all are a dream that God put in his heart a long time ago, and it's really encouraging to see that dream in 3D today. 00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:41.679 As a guest preacher, I was given the distinct privilege of getting to choose my own sermon text, which for a lectionary preacher is a big deal because we usually don't pick our sermon text. 00:00:41.920 --> 00:00:51.200 So I jumped at the opportunity to reflect with you on a real passion of mine, which is the Eucharist, or sometimes called the Lord's Supper or Communion. 00:00:51.439 --> 00:01:01.600 Some of you know that I just wrote a book about this topic because receiving and celebrating the Eucharist has had a really profound impact on my faith and on my life. 00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:04.480 I'll say more about that in a few minutes. 00:01:04.959 --> 00:01:22.319 But because I am a lectionary preacher, I couldn't let today's assigned readings completely pass us by, because today we are celebrating Jesus' ascension to heaven, which is such an important and beautiful part of our redemption story. 00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:27.200 So in today's sermon, I will attempt to have my cake and eat it too. 00:01:27.519 --> 00:01:31.840 I'll tell you a little bit about the Eucharist and a little bit about the ascension. 00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:35.519 The good news is they really do go together, right? 00:01:35.760 --> 00:01:41.519 Because Jesus instituted this meal in anticipation of all that was to come. 00:01:41.680 --> 00:01:46.879 So, yes, his death and his resurrection, but also his return to heaven. 00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:59.439 And it's actually customary during Easter to revisit some of Jesus' last words to his disciples and to turn them over again in light of their fulfillment on the third day. 00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:06.480 So this morning, I want to revisit the Last Supper in that light, in the light of Easter. 00:02:06.719 --> 00:02:14.879 And I want to ask, what does this meal mean for us now that Jesus is alive and actually at the right hand of the Father? 00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:18.960 And how does it form and inform our lives today? 00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:21.759 How does this meal shape us as Christians? 00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:25.039 I'm gonna suggest three things to you. 00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:36.560 As resurrection people, we feast on Jesus' life, we feast in Jesus' absence, and we feast in anticipation. 00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:39.120 So that's where we're headed. 00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:45.439 Together though, let me share with you a little more context about why the Lord's Supper has been so powerful in my life. 00:02:45.520 --> 00:02:48.159 You know, I'm a priest, I'm a professional church lady. 00:02:48.319 --> 00:02:54.159 Of course, I would be excited about the Eucharist, but it actually began well before I was ordained. 00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:07.520 So I grew up, probably like many of you, in church, and I had a strong message of salvation as a child that went something like this: Jesus died to forgive our sins so that we can go to heaven. 00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:10.879 Anyone else hear some version of that message growing up? 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:11.439 Okay. 00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:17.520 So it's not wrong, but it's very transactional. 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:21.840 It's very focused on goods and services, right? 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:28.639 I turn to Jesus to get something from him, to get my ticket to the good place. 00:03:29.759 --> 00:03:36.560 But the Lord's Supper, this meal that Jesus gave us, it tells a slightly different story. 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:44.080 It tells the story of a God who doesn't just give us a thing, but who gives us himself. 00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:49.199 A God who said, This is my body given for you. 00:03:50.080 --> 00:04:01.840 So over time, receiving communion helped me to realize the core message of the gospel isn't about the transaction of goods, but about the communion of persons. 00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:13.039 It's about the God who doesn't just give us a ticket to heaven, but who gives us himself, who invites us into fellowship with him. 00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:18.319 The greatest gift God has to give us is himself. 00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:25.839 And in the gospel, he gives us nothing less than that, nothing less than his very life. 00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:32.319 So let's look now to the Last Supper, where Jesus makes this abundantly clear. 00:04:32.720 --> 00:04:50.879 You probably know the Last Supper was not just a random dinner party that Jesus hosted for his friends, it was a Passover meal, a meal of remembrance, and also in some ways of reenactment of Israel's deliverance from slavery in Egypt. 00:04:51.759 --> 00:05:00.240 And at this Passover meal, Jesus says to his disciples, I'm about to be betrayed unto death, but don't worry. 00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:02.720 I'm doing this on purpose. 00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:09.839 And then he takes the bread of the Passover and he gives it to them and he says, This is my body given for you. 00:05:11.360 --> 00:05:19.360 In other words, Jesus assures them that his death will not just be the tragic ending to an otherwise hopeful ministry. 00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:26.319 It won't just be the result of Judas' betrayal or an expression of Rome's power. 00:05:26.959 --> 00:05:30.240 Jesus' death will be a gift. 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:33.279 It will be Passover 2.0. 00:05:34.399 --> 00:05:42.240 In offering his body and blood to his disciples, Jesus makes clear, I am the Lamb who secures your freedom. 00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:51.199 So in this meal, we see the true nature of God's love for us and the true cost of his love. 00:05:51.920 --> 00:06:07.759 In becoming our Passover Lamb, Jesus shows that he loves us enough and in such a way that he takes it upon himself to rescue us, to accomplish our exodus, to secure our freedom. 00:06:08.079 --> 00:06:15.279 God does not send just a prophet with a message or a map with instructions. 00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:17.120 He sends himself. 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:28.720 And he does not withhold this gift, not even a little bit, even at the cost of his own life. 00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:38.720 Now again, maybe you've been in church a long time and you hear this language about self-giving, Jesus giving us himself, and you hear it in kind of a substitutionary way, right? 00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:42.240 Like Jesus gave his life to pay for my sins. 00:06:42.720 --> 00:06:44.879 Again, that is true. 00:06:45.199 --> 00:06:47.680 But that's only part of what this means. 00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:49.680 So let me say more. 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:58.720 In the original Passover, the lamb wasn't only a substitution, it was also a meal. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:05.199 Meaning the Israelites didn't just kill the lamb and spread its blood over the doorposts. 00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:12.160 They also ate the meat to be strengthened by it, energized for the journey ahead. 00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:23.040 So when we celebrate our Passover feast, it's important for us to remember that Jesus' self-donation doesn't only secure our forgiveness. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:27.920 It's also our ongoing nourishment in the Christian life. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:33.519 Here's how we begin to see how this meal changes us. 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:50.879 Because this isn't just about receiving something Jesus did on our behalf, but about becoming one with Him, communing with Him in such a way that His life, His nature, His character begins to shape and fuel our own. 00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:57.040 Through our communion with Him, we become those who love as God loves. 00:07:58.480 --> 00:08:07.759 And of course, the whole point here is that we don't do that in our own strength, but as those who feast on the strength that God has provided. 00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:13.040 We feast on his life, and then that life begins to live through us. 00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:20.800 Have you ever known someone who's like really, really productive or prolific? 00:08:48.159 --> 00:08:50.559 What does that guy eat for breakfast? 00:08:51.600 --> 00:08:52.559 Coffee. 00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:01.840 You are what you eat. 00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:11.039 And the Christian claim, as bizarre as it has always sounded, is that we eat Jesus. 00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:17.519 Our lives are sustained and energized by the self-giving love of God. 00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:28.879 And what happens is that over time, our lives begin to reflect this in a way that other people can see, and in a way that nourishes and strengthens them. 00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:35.519 So we become those who don't just receive the Eucharist, but who are learning how to live it. 00:09:35.840 --> 00:09:44.879 We're learning how to say to our friends and family and neighbors and colleagues, this is my body, this is my life given for you. 00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:53.519 In other words, we are learning how to love the same way we have been loved because we feast on Jesus' life. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:10:02.080 Second point, as resurrection people, we now feast in Jesus' absence. 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:12.799 Jesus' first disciples had the privilege of receiving communion from him face to face at the Last Supper. 00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:17.039 And then of seeing him alive again in the flesh, right? 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:21.120 Touching the scars on his hands and the wound in his side. 00:10:21.840 --> 00:10:32.720 But from the beginning, Jesus understood what they didn't, which is that his victory over death would not reunite them in the way they imagined that it would. 00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:39.120 Think back to Easter morning when Jesus instructed Mary Magdalene not to cling to him. 00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:40.080 Why? 00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:44.480 Because he had not yet ascended to the Father. 00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:50.000 Now, if I were Mary Magdalene, I might feel a little bit jerked around by this, to be honest. 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:52.559 I mean, imagine what it would have been like for them. 00:10:52.879 --> 00:10:57.840 Jesus is alive, he's back, but he's leaving again. 00:10:58.399 --> 00:11:04.720 He's the one, he did it, but now we don't get to follow him in the only way we've ever known. 00:11:05.919 --> 00:11:19.840 Now, Jesus' ascension is good news for God's people because it means that our advocate is now in heaven, interceding for us, and that the Spirit has been given to empower us for our mission to the world. 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:22.480 We heard that in Acts 1 this morning. 00:11:22.559 --> 00:11:26.159 I'm sure you'll hear more about that on Pentecost next week. 00:11:26.559 --> 00:11:35.200 But today I want to point out that Jesus' ascension means that he is absent from us in a way that does still hurt a little bit. 00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:41.279 He is not here in the way that he once was and will be one day again. 00:11:42.799 --> 00:11:46.960 As Anglicans, we often speak of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. 00:11:47.039 --> 00:11:49.360 We just talked about that, feasting on Jesus' life. 00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:51.519 I believe that wholeheartedly. 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:56.639 But I also believe in the real absence of Christ in the Eucharist. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:11:58.720 And here's what I mean by that. 00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:13.440 I mean at this table, where we proclaim the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and the rebirth of all creation, we also proclaim that things are not yet as they should be. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:19.440 And that they won't be as they should be until Jesus comes again. 00:12:20.159 --> 00:12:27.279 So at this table, our hunger is filled, but not fully. 00:12:27.679 --> 00:12:34.399 At this table, we come into contact with a hunger that won't be fully filled in the here and now. 00:12:34.559 --> 00:12:41.440 We come to this table and we learn to cry out, come quickly again, Lord Jesus, so we can feast with you face to face. 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:56.799 In other words, at church and at the table of the Lord, we have permission and even the responsibility to name what is still broken and still missing among us. 00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:04.000 I don't know how that lands with you, but for me it was a huge relief. 00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:14.000 Because I grew up in a Christian subculture that emphasized God's blessings and all the happy endings available to those who follow him. 00:13:14.720 --> 00:13:20.639 But I also grew up watching my father die slowly of an aggressive form of cancer. 00:13:21.679 --> 00:13:25.440 And for a long time I didn't know how to reconcile those two stories. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:38.480 I didn't know how to hold my hope in God's power to do miracles alongside of my grief over the miracles that didn't come, those things that remain irreparably broken. 00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:49.600 I didn't know how to hold them both together until I started coming to the table where I was invited to taste both fulfillment and longing. 00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:59.600 You probably don't need me to tell you that trauma begets trauma, and that in this world we are swimming in it. 00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:07.440 And the Christian story does mean redemption is available now, in the middle of that. 00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:10.240 Resurrection and renewal are here now. 00:14:11.279 --> 00:14:13.919 But that's only part of our story. 00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:21.440 The other part of the story is that death and decay and dysfunction still haunt us. 00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:31.200 That people we love are still in graves, that we are still beset with sin and addiction and illness. 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:43.279 In other words, renewal is real, but so is our longing for that renewal to be complete for the day Jesus returns to finish his work and to feast with us again face to face. 00:14:44.879 --> 00:14:51.600 I think the first Christians had an advantage in understanding this because they watched Jesus leave. 00:14:52.240 --> 00:15:00.000 So for them, their earliest celebrations of the Lord's Supper were truly equal parts remembrance and longing. 00:15:00.799 --> 00:15:08.000 You know, they remembered his life poured out for them, and they longed for the day that they would sit at table with him again. 00:15:08.799 --> 00:15:16.559 They understood on a visceral level that until that day of Jesus' return, we feast in his absence. 00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:18.960 And we do feast on him. 00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:23.519 He is really present to us as we gather around the table. 00:15:23.679 --> 00:15:26.799 We remember him and we are remembered, right?
