00:00:56.320 --> 00:01:09.840 The only one, not Lazarus or the bleeding woman, not water to wine, the healing of the blind man with the mud in his eyes, not walking on water, calming a storm, just the feeding of the five thousand. 00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:24.480 Scholars don't really agree why that is, but it's the reason we're looking at this passage this morning, despite seeing the same miracle in John on a Sunday morning just last fall. 00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:35.120 Each of the four Gospels comes at the story from a slightly different angle befitting of four unique perspectives. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.959 For Matthew, that angle is the context. 00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:43.680 But before we dive in, let's pray. 00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:50.480 Gracious God, thank you for this morning for the chance to gather, to worship, to pray, to hear from your word. 00:01:52.239 --> 00:02:00.719 And I pray now that as my words line up with your words, that they would fall on ears and hearts, ready to receive them and respond. 00:02:03.280 --> 00:02:10.719 Gracious God, if I say anything that isn't from you, I pray that those words would quickly be forgotten. 00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:16.800 And I pray all these things through Jesus Christ our Lord. 00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:17.919 Amen. 00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:21.520 Here's the situation. 00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:29.759 In John, the feeding of the 5,000 comes on the heels of Jesus' teaching regarding his own authority. 00:02:30.240 --> 00:02:37.439 The story, which comes in John 6, is an illustration of that authority put into practice and how Jesus operates within it. 00:02:37.759 --> 00:02:49.199 In Mark and Luke, Jesus and his disciples withdraw to the wilderness to rest and debrief after they're sent out to preach and heal on their own for the first time. 00:02:49.759 --> 00:03:00.319 Luke 9, 10 says, On their return, the apostles told Jesus all that they had done when he had sent them out, and Jesus took them and withdrew. 00:03:00.719 --> 00:03:06.319 But the contextual emphasis in Matthew is just a little bit different. 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:15.840 Look, starting at verse 13, when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. 00:03:17.520 --> 00:03:25.599 What is this that Jesus heard that caused him to withdraw into the wilderness to be by himself? 00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:27.039 Someone with a Bible open. 00:03:27.199 --> 00:03:28.479 Can you tell me? 00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:32.719 Death of John the Baptist. 00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:37.759 Herod, the Roman puppet king of Israel, had a feast. 00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:43.840 At the feast, his stepdaughter danced for the crowd, and they liked it. 00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:48.159 And yes, that's supposed to be creepy because it is. 00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:59.520 And they liked it enough that Herod offered the girl, who's both his stepdaughter and his niece, because he had married his brother's wife, a boon. 00:04:00.879 --> 00:04:10.400 At the prodding of the girl's mother, she asked for John the Baptist's head, which was brought to her on a platter. 00:04:12.639 --> 00:04:15.360 The whole story is horrifying. 00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:17.360 It's grotesque. 00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:23.199 It's all sorts of manipulating and violent and disgusting. 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:33.040 And when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. 00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:36.879 This is important for two reasons. 00:04:37.120 --> 00:04:39.759 First, it explains why Jesus withdrew. 00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:43.519 He was horrified by what had happened to his cousin John. 00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:46.480 He was grieved by it. 00:04:47.920 --> 00:05:09.600 And second, Matthew is setting up a juxtaposition between the depraved feast of Herod, which is ruled by all sorts of self-seeking evil and excess, and the hillside feast of Jesus, marked by compassionate provision. 00:05:11.120 --> 00:05:16.079 You're the type that likes to take notes in the margins of your Bible, that's worth making note of. 00:05:43.839 --> 00:05:48.720 And so he withdraws to be by himself. 00:05:50.079 --> 00:05:55.360 It seems to affect the crowds, too, who had come to John in droves. 00:05:55.519 --> 00:06:02.560 Verse 13 tells us that when the crowds heard it, they followed Jesus on foot from the towns. 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:09.920 Maybe they want to know what Jesus has to say about the execution of the prophet who had so powerfully ministered in the desert. 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:13.759 Maybe they're confused and grieving as well. 00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:18.000 Either way, they want to be with Jesus. 00:06:19.279 --> 00:06:27.360 Friends, when you're overwhelmed or confused, when you're grieving or hurt, where do you turn for comfort? 00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:32.399 Do you like the crowds here to go looking for Jesus? 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.079 Or do you go looking for consolation elsewhere? 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:43.199 And distraction, business, like throwing yourself into work or school. 00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:51.120 I'm not sure that the crowds even know what they're looking for. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:56.319 But it seems they know that they'll find it in Jesus. 00:06:57.920 --> 00:07:02.160 Now remember, Jesus has headed towards the wilderness on a boat. 00:07:02.399 --> 00:07:05.199 The crowds go looking for him on foot. 00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:10.480 Verse 14 When Jesus went to shore, he sees a great crowd. 00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:15.439 And he has compassion on them and healed their sick. 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:30.560 And Jesus doesn't have that. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:32.480 You and I might have that. 00:07:32.720 --> 00:07:34.240 Jesus doesn't have that. 00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:37.040 It seems Jesus just wanted to get away. 00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:39.600 Can you imagine just for a second here you're Jesus? 00:10:09.519 --> 00:10:11.200 We have three freezers in our house. 00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:12.879 She's going to empty all of them. 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:18.000 Or when it's time for dinner, or second dinner for crying out loud. 00:10:18.159 --> 00:10:24.159 And Jesus is dealing with five thousand men plus women and children. 00:10:24.720 --> 00:10:29.759 I freak out, perhaps rightfully so, over half a dozen teachers. 00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:32.320 It's ludicrous. 00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:39.519 And they respond in a way that, frankly, to me, feels appropriate giving the situation. 00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:44.799 They said to him, We only have five loaves here and two fish. 00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:48.639 It's like my wife saying, Can you feed the five teenage boys? 00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:51.519 And me responding, but we only have one frozen pizza. 00:10:51.679 --> 00:10:54.159 That like barely covers one of them. 00:10:55.440 --> 00:10:59.120 The disciples, and honestly, it is reasonable, they protest. 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:04.799 This right here, Jesus, is a need that we cannot meet. 00:11:07.279 --> 00:11:12.799 The disciples have no faith in this moment for a miracle. 00:11:14.559 --> 00:11:19.679 And they're probably grieving and exhausted as well. 00:11:22.320 --> 00:11:28.000 And so rather than asking Jesus the question, what do you want us to do? 00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:29.759 They protest. 00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:31.519 This is all we've got, Jesus. 00:11:31.679 --> 00:11:33.519 Surely it's not enough. 00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:40.639 But Jesus can make do with whatever we have to offer. 00:11:42.879 --> 00:11:48.720 Jesus can make do with whatever little bit you and I have to offer. 00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:55.600 So he says in verse 18, bring the loaves and the fish to me. 00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:01.679 Now I'd like to go off on just a little bit of a tangent here, if it's okay with you. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:07.759 There's a reason why the word remember is used so frequently in the Bible. 00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:12.240 I think it's like the third most common verb in the entire Old Testament. 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:15.840 In the Hebrew, it's Zakar, we get the name Zachary from it. 00:12:17.279 --> 00:12:31.039 And it's why it's so important for us to know our Bibles, to read, to mark, to inwardly digest the scriptures so that we know the story, so we know our place in it. 00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:44.639 And thus can remember and trust God in our moments of weakness and need when we find ourselves in those impossible places where we can't see a way forward. 00:12:45.360 --> 00:12:50.240 The disciples here, again, reasonably can't see a way forward. 00:12:51.360 --> 00:13:01.840 They don't see how they or Jesus could possibly feed these hungry, hurting people out here in the wilderness with just five loaves and two fish. 00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:14.639 But if they remembered the story, they would know that God has fed his people in the wilderness before. 00:13:18.159 --> 00:13:21.679 We just read it again in Psalm 78. 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:25.600 Can he make a feast in the wilderness? 00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:29.679 Oh, yes, he can. 00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:34.159 Man ate of the bread and of the angels. 00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:37.039 He sent them food in abundance. 00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:43.360 He rained down on them manna to eat, gave them the grain of heaven. 00:13:43.600 --> 00:13:50.399 We just prayed those words, remembered them together in Psalm 78. 00:13:53.279 --> 00:14:03.840 God did it with manna in the wilderness during the Exodus, every day, for years on end, plenty of food for all of God's people. 00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:09.919 What is impossible for the disciples isn't impossible for Jesus. 00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:14.480 What is impossible for us isn't impossible for God. 00:14:15.759 --> 00:14:24.480 Maybe, maybe if they had remembered the story, they might have had faith for it. 00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:26.240 I mean, maybe not. 00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:30.080 They're tired and grieving, and we are so quick to forget, aren't we? 00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:39.600 But Jesus can make do with whatever little we have to offer him, and so he said, Bring it to me. 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:45.279 Friends, this is a very important question. 00:14:47.200 --> 00:14:52.000 Do you still come to Jesus in your lack, your weakness? 00:14:53.519 --> 00:14:58.240 Do you bring whatever little or much you have to offer him? 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:23.440 It's an invitation here in the text to give Jesus everything you've got, all of it, to hold nothing back, but to bring it all to him with open hands and a willing heart and in practical obedience, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to trust in his provision and his care, his ability to meet all of our needs, even when it seems impossible. 00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:26.080 So what have you got? 00:15:27.519 --> 00:15:29.200 Bring it to Jesus. 00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:38.879 This offering, this self-offering is how the disciples of Jesus participate in the mission of Jesus. 00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:42.720 That was true in this story 2,000 years ago, and it's true today. 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:50.399 Our offering and self-offering is how disciples of Jesus participate in the mission of Jesus. 00:15:51.519 --> 00:15:59.360 And so Jesus in verse 19 ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven. 00:15:59.600 --> 00:16:07.279 He said a blessing, and he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 00:16:07.440 --> 00:16:10.559 Does this pattern seem familiar to you? 00:16:12.879 --> 00:16:14.320 We do it every week. 00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:17.120 We'll do it again here in just a few moments. 00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:24.799 Most every commentator over the last 2,000 years has made the observation that this foreshadows the Lord's Supper. 00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:40.240 Just as Jesus took the bread, looked to heaven, said a blessing, broke it, and fed the people, so have Christians for 2,000 years taken bread, looked to heaven, set a blessing, and then fed God's people. 00:16:40.720 --> 00:17:00.240 The table and bread multiplied for the people of God is the means by which the Lord Jesus has fed his people for millennia, giving us what we need to go about the work that he's given us to do, feeding his church that we might be empowered for mission in the world. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:24.079 Just as Jesus fed those in need of him on a hillside all those years ago, so he still feeds us today as we gather to pray and worship and learn from the scriptures, well aware of our own need for him and eager to be fed, that we might be sent to participate in his mission in the world. 00:17:24.319 --> 00:17:30.559 He feeds the people, and he invites his disciples to participate in the work. 00:17:31.680 --> 00:17:32.880 And I love that. 00:17:33.440 --> 00:17:41.119 That despite the disciples' doubt, Jesus includes them in the miracles. 00:17:42.240 --> 00:17:53.440 For all their doubt and skepticism, you bring what little they have to Jesus anyway, and then he includes them in the miracle of it all. 00:17:54.880 --> 00:17:56.960 And isn't that just like us?
