a part two to this where we're going to be talking about the rapture, we're going to be talking about tribulation period, and ultimately the judgment of that we see in scripture. 00:02:55.840 --> 00:03:03.919 So today we're going to talk about one specific aspect of it, but in the return of Christ, there's other dimensions to it that we're going to expound on this upcoming Wednesday. 00:03:04.080 --> 00:03:05.599 Can I get a good amen to that? 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:12.159 Okay, let's read uh the word of the Lord so we can all kind of center ourselves around where God is leading us today. 00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:35.360 Uh, Titus chapter 2, verses 11 through 14 says this for the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lust, and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:03:35.520 --> 00:03:45.199 He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works. 00:03:45.439 --> 00:03:59.599 I want to draw your attention to verse number 13, where it says, While we wait for the blessed hope, this is what we're waiting for, and then it explains what that hope is: the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:15.759 We see here that that Paul is leading us to this space of saying that there's a great hope that all of us as believers have, and ultimately he he summarizes that great hope is in the return or the appearing of the great glory, and that is Jesus Christ. 00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:18.560 So today, that's what I want to spend some saved, the thing that helped my faith the most was coming to church every week, and then I would literally just listen to my pastor's messages, and then I would look over my notes and read every 00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:36.879 And as we open it, we recognize that we're seeing the literal words and mind and heart of God being put on display for us to lean into, to embrace, to be challenged and I've been thinking a lot, just as I'm getting old, and I'm not sure if this is in some kind of like manual for getting old, but as I got to be about 48, I started kind of like reflecting a lot more, thinking about legacy and just these kind of movements that we find ourselves in. 00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:41.519 And so for me, I find that I'm thinking a lot more about my family and different milestones and moments that I shared with my children and now subsequently my my grandchildren. 00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:46.160 And there's something that just hit me a few weeks ago that that just had the as the as the patriarch of the family, I'm sitting there with with Trey on my lap, and I have like this moment where I remember when Keith was on my lap, and I mean I'm just I'm just feeling it. different points, and and and for whatever reason, that day you saw something you never saw before. 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:31.120 That day something stands out in a way that it never had before. 00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:39.200 Well, I had one of those moments, and the truth is, this is not a new director's cut version of it, it's that I'm in a different space, so I see things differently. exiled, self-exiled. 00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:48.799 And so while he's gone, living his best akuna matata life, um, the pride where his family and where his legacy is was barren. 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:49.840 It was desolate. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:55.039 That scar had literally ran it into the ground and cooperations with the hyenas, it was a it was a hot mess. 00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:01.360 So Simba's over here, denying where he was supposed to be at, but but the pride where he was from was completely desolate. 00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:04.000 It was a desert land that once was flourishing. 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:10.559 And so there's this moment where he's confronted with his past where they're like, hey, we need you to come back and take your rightful place. 00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:12.399 We need you to bring order back. 00:10:12.559 --> 00:10:18.240 And so there's this moment where Simba is finally convinced to go back and take the throne that was supposed to be his. 00:10:18.399 --> 00:10:21.679 And I'm telling you, this is a moment that got me got me having the chills. 00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:26.960 There's this moment where where Simba's kind of creeping up, like looking at the land and seeing how bad the land has gotten. 00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:30.480 Scar is there is arguing, and then Scar backhands his mom. 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:34.799 Man, listen, that was a moment where Simba roared. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:37.200 And when he roared, look at the sequence of events. 00:10:37.279 --> 00:10:42.960 He roared and there was lightning in the sky and it began to rain, and literally Scar shrunk back. 00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:58.559 I won't give you all the messy details, but ultimately in that moment when Simba stepped up, there was lightning in the air, the ground had begun to shake, and Simba took his rightful place, and what was once desolate had been nurtured back to a promising life. 00:10:58.639 --> 00:11:03.360 I'm telling you, when I saw that, I almost stood on my feet and dropped my grandson on the ground. 00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:07.440 Because I saw something there that I didn't recognize before. 00:11:07.679 --> 00:11:13.840 Because I think inside of all of us, we all know what it feels like to sense that things are hopeless. 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:21.279 We all know what it feels like to feel like we're in a place of despair and brokenness and fear and wondering if it's ever getting better. 00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:28.559 And I think inside of all of us, there's something that is longing for the king to come back and put things back in their rightful place. 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:36.159 We're all longing for the day that a king will come back and re-establish the order that the enemy, that scar, has established in our lives. 00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:38.720 Many of us are dealing with brokenness as we speak. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:48.080 We're dealing with brokenness in our bodies, we're dealing with brokenness in our families, we're dealing with brokenness in relationships, we're dealing with despair and desolation, even in our sense of self-worth. 00:11:48.159 --> 00:11:53.360 And there's something inside of us that is craving for something to come and show us purpose. 00:11:53.519 --> 00:12:05.759 And what Paul is saying, that blessed hope is Jesus, that our king is going to return and he's going to restore order and allow us to be vindicated by the roar of the line of the tribe of Judah. 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:11.840 This is why we celebrate, this is why we hold on to Jesus, this is what we're holding in anticipation of. 00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:14.159 It's the return of the king. 00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:29.600 And so the idea that the king has conquered the land and that he's going to come back is a beautiful idea, and now we have a responsibility and a response that we're called to lean into it. 00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:39.440 See, in ancient times, a king wasn't just a ruler, he was also a protector, he was a defender, he was literally a savior for his people. 00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:51.360 Whenever the kingdom was being threatened by opposition, the king would lead his army out to battle while those stayed back in the security of the kingdom in hopes that the king would be victorious. 00:12:51.600 --> 00:12:59.919 And when the king was victorious, the victory didn't just belong to the king alone, it belonged to the entire kingdom as well. 00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:08.240 So an herald would come, and ultimately when he would come back, the king would be away, he would be victorious, they're sorting through the spoils of war. 00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:14.240 But an herald would come back and he would say, I bid you good news from the king. 00:13:14.559 --> 00:13:19.679 He was victorious in battle, you don't have to be afraid of your oppressors anymore. 00:13:19.919 --> 00:13:25.600 And the king is coming back, and we're going to have a massive celebration. 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:35.279 That was literally referred to as you on Galeon, which is the word that translates to good news, which is what we call the gospel today. 00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:46.240 That an herald would go forth and communicate and declare the good news is that the king was victorious, which means we are victorious, and he's coming back. 00:13:46.720 --> 00:13:49.200 Isaiah 52 speaks to this. peace and bring good news, who proclaim salvation to those and saying that your king reigns. 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:12.480 How how blessed, how glorious are the feet of those who preach the gospel. 00:14:29.519 What I'm saying to you is this there's a moment where the Bible says that for the people who carry the responsibility and recognize it's my job to go into different places and to declare the good news. 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:32.960 And that good news is that the king has won. 00:14:33.039 --> 00:14:38.240 And we're a part of that victory, and he's inviting us to be a part of the biggest celebration. 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:55.440 The thing that he brought us victory over is not just that our sins can be forgiven, but he's letting us know that the enemy who has been tormenting your family, he's been defeated, that the sickness that has been tormenting your body has been defeated, that the hopelessness that you feel that will never get any better that has been defeated. 00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:59.519 And you are able to celebrate a victory that you didn't even have to fight him. 00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:03.039 This is why the Bible says the battle is not yours, it's the just wishful thinking. 00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:41.440 This is not a metaphor, it's not a promise, it's not a promised future that exists within an ether, but this is a reality that Jesus speaks about declaring these things, it would seem that those are things we need to pay attention to. 00:15:52.879 --> 00:16:03.600 So as Jesus is literally preparing to go to the cross, he says to his disciples in John 14, verses 2 through 3, he says, In my father's house are many rooms. 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:08.320 If it were not so, would I have told you that I'm going to a place to prepare for you? 00:16:08.480 --> 00:16:17.360 If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am, you may also be. 00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:22.720 Jesus literally stakes his integrity, his character on this promise. 00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:33.200 And he says that just as surely as I was born, and just as surely as I live, just as surely as I died, and just as surely as I was resurrected, I am also coming back. 00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:44.799 The good news is not just one aspect of that, but the gospel message is not that just Jesus came, but it's that he ascend into the heavens. 00:17:05.119 --> 00:17:13.119 And the Bible says that as they were watching, enamored and filled with emotions and confusion, that two angels appear next to the disciples. 00:17:13.279 --> 00:17:19.440 Acts chapter 1, verse 11, and they said this, Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up into heaven? 00:17:19.680 --> 00:17:27.519 This same Jesus who has been taken from you into heaven will come in the same way that you've seen him going into heaven. 00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:34.960 That says that the same way that you've seen Jesus leave is the same way that you're going to see him return. 00:17:35.279 --> 00:17:43.039 This same Jesus, our loving Savior, the one who was crucified, the one who has been resurrected, will also personally come back. 00:17:43.279 --> 00:17:46.880 Scripture underscores this reality over and over again. 00:17:47.039 --> 00:17:55.839 In fact, one Bible teacher noted that there are references to the return of Christ that outnumber the references to his original birth. 00:17:55.920 --> 00:17:58.079 It's outnumbered by a factor of eight to one. 00:17:58.400 --> 00:18:05.680 By some accounts, 23 of the 27 books of the New Testament explicitly mention the return of Christ. 00:18:05.920 --> 00:18:11.200 Over 300 passages in the New Testament refer to the return of Christ. 00:18:11.359 --> 00:18:17.279 That means roughly one in every 30 verses talks about the return of Christ. 00:18:17.440 --> 00:18:22.960 It's as if God is trying to reinforce an idea that we could sometimes forget. 00:18:23.119 --> 00:18:37.839 It's almost as if God knew that we would grow weary, skeptical, and doubtful, and so he made sure that he wove in over and over again to make sure that we never lose sight of the fact that Jesus is coming back, and our responsibility is to be ready. 00:18:38.079 --> 00:18:42.000 The beautiful thing is that the early church, they lived in this tension. 00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:48.160 In fact, they would often greet each other and say a statement to one another to kind of continue to put this in front of them. 00:18:48.240 --> 00:18:50.319 They would use a phrase called Maranatha. angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather his elect from the four winds of the earth into the other ends of the sky. 00:25:05.920 --> 00:25:14.000 That means that when he comes back, there's that name is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. 00:27:37.519 --> 00:27:40.799 The first time Jesus came, he wore a crown of thorns. 00:27:40.960 --> 00:27:44.079 The next time he comes, he's wearing a crown of authority. 00:27:44.319 --> 00:27:47.279 The first time he came, he was mocked as the king of Jews. 00:27:47.440 --> 00:27:51.119 But the next time he comes, creation will know him as the king of the universe. 00:27:51.359 --> 00:27:54.559 The first time he came, he was called the lamb that was slain. 00:27:54.640 --> 00:27:57.839 But the next time he comes, he will be known as the lion who reigns. 00:27:57.920 --> 00:28:08.000 That when Jesus comes back, we will see a different dimension and aspect of his character where he will no longer be the suffering servant, but he will that was used, that was often referred to when a slave was purchased back, their debt was paid, that the that the cost of their servanthood was now paid, and now they were set free. 00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:05.519 The king has set us free. 00:29:05.680 --> 00:29:07.039 Now, quick theology lesson. 00:29:07.200 --> 00:29:09.519 The Bible says that we're born in sin and shaped in iniquity. 00:29:09.599 --> 00:29:16.160 That means that because of Adam and Eve's sin, they were the representative of all mankind, so their violation was passed on to us. 00:29:16.319 --> 00:29:21.200 It's like when you're on a team and somebody may commit a foul, but the entire team experiences the penalty. 00:29:21.359 --> 00:29:22.480 That's what happened with humanity. 00:29:22.640 --> 00:29:29.279 Adam and Eve, they were the representatives of mankind because they rebelled against God, that rebellious nature was then passed on to us. 00:29:29.440 --> 00:29:33.039 So scripture refers to that sin nature as a debt. 00:29:33.200 --> 00:29:37.200 And the Bible says that the wages of sin, the price of that, is death. 00:29:37.359 --> 00:29:41.359 That means that something had to die in order to when we try to create our own righteousness, that means for those of us that whenever we make mistakes and we haven't surrendered our life to Christ, we try to create our own righteousness. that the price of sin is costly. 00:30:28.400 --> 00:30:37.920 So now we continue to perpetuate this idea that over and over again that man would sin, something would die to cover man's sin, and that 00:31:02.720 --> 00:31:11.920 In other words, what Paul is saying is the debt that we inherited as being people who were made in the image of Adam and Eve, that sin debt was paid by Jesus.
