little bit nostalgic and reflective, and this series lends itself to it just a little bit. 00:05:51.199 --> 00:05:58.879 And I've been thinking a lot about just how I was raised versus how I've raised my children, even just the culture that we're in right now. 00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:08.000 And I realized that when I was being raised, there were certain things that were very clear, there were certain lines that were very clear, but in our current context, um it's it's different. 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:11.920 Nothing screams at more than just the clothes that we wear. 00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:16.079 So let me give you all a little bit of a recap into my childhood. 00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:25.759 When I was coming up, there was a clear distinction between your school clothes, your play clothes, and your church clothes. 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:27.680 It was a very clear distinction. 00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:35.519 You knew that when the fall came and and and your mom took you into the store, and for me, I aspired to get bugle boys and Sebago shoes. 00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:36.639 That was my vibe back then. 00:06:36.959 --> 00:06:39.040 Like that was that was the the lane I was in. 00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:43.600 But you knew very clearly that those clothes were meant for school. 00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:46.240 That when you wore them to school, you better not mess them up. 00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:52.399 I don't know how we survived recess, but nonetheless, it was very clear that these clothes are meant for school. 00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:55.279 And then when you get home, you were had to change clothes. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:07:04.879 There was nothing more risky, there was nothing more rebellious than a kid who would come home for school and go immediately outside back out of it there was a clear, there was a clear distinction. 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:19.680 The play clothes, those were clothes that used to be your school clothes that got downgraded. 00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:32.000 They've gotten downgraded, they've lost their position as being the thing that you wore to that you wore to school, and so now those are the ones that you could wear around and you can get dirty and mess them up and get scuffs in them, all that was cool. 00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:34.720 But then you had the church clothes. 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:38.399 And and for us, the the church clothes were separate. 00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:49.759 They they were they were distinct, at least in my household, like the school clothes had its drawer, the the play clothes had its own little spot, but the church clothes, they got hung up in the closet. 00:07:50.720 --> 00:08:00.319 And and you could always tell the family that went to church a whole lot based off of the little spots on the hanger that were there because you didn't have time to iron them out and you had to press and the stuff in your shoulder. 00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:04.879 So you could always tell how frequently you went to church, but the but the church clothes were were set apart. 00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:09.199 They were different, they were in a whole different part of your closet because you knew like these are clothes. 00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:12.879 I'll my church clothes will never become, they'll never become my play clothes. 00:08:12.959 --> 00:08:20.000 My church clothes will never become my my school clothes unless it's picture day and then there is grace extended on that day. 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:25.839 But other than that, the the church clothes are gonna just be the church 00:09:03.440 Brace yourself. 00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:16.000 The fifth week when I came, one of the brothers, one of the deacons in the church came up to me and he said, Hey, brother Keith, because that's what they carried, hey Brother Keith, um, before before you head out, man, I want to I want to I want to give you something, I want to gift you something the Holy Spirit told me to give you. world where that doesn't matter. 00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:16.960 I'm so grateful that I got freedom from that nate that I can come up in here and I can have boots on with 10 shoestrings in it, and I can feel so confident and bold and just equally as anointed, maybe even more because I got more, I got more movement. 00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:26.720 So I I really do appreciate that, but I will say I do have a couple of items that are in my closet that are designated for special occasions. 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:28.080 They're set apart. 00:10:28.240 --> 00:10:30.639 It's just it's just different than the rest of my clothes. 00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:39.279 When I'm doing when I'm doing weddings, when I'm when I'm doing something with baby dedication, there's certain items that I only wear because of the the environment that I'm going into. 00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:41.279 It's it's set apart. 00:10:41.679 --> 00:10:55.759 I often wonder if the same way that the lines have blurred with the way that we dress, the the lines have blurred in so many different things, if that's what's caused the lines to blur in the way that we see and value the church altogether. 00:10:56.399 --> 00:11:03.039 Because what I'm I'm recognizing is that the church by name literally means to be set apart. 00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:11.039 The word church in the Greek is ekklesia, and it literally means called out ones or those who have been set apart. 00:11:11.440 --> 00:11:32.320 And in the early church, it was understood that me being connected to this powerful community was a place for me to grow and to be transformed, for me to be rooted in an environment that would challenge me, that would inspire me, that would help me to grow, the people that knew me and I would know them, and then they would see me go through the highs and the lows, and they would have a story to tell, and we could have these moments that we could spend together. 00:11:32.480 --> 00:11:41.519 It was always meant to be this thing of transformation, but but the fact of the matter is the way that we have seen and defined church has drastically shifted over the years. 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:45.759 See, last week I shared a little bit of data as it relates to engaging God's word. 00:11:45.919 --> 00:11:47.200 Let me I like staying in this space. 00:11:47.279 --> 00:11:49.600 This is my professor Vane right now, so I'm gonna stay here for a moment. 00:11:49.679 --> 00:11:56.879 I I want to share some stats with you regarding church engagement in our current context, particularly post-pandemic. 00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:04.080 For every person that says that they are a follower of Christ, 30% goes to church. 00:12:05.360 --> 00:12:13.039 Of all the people that say that I am a follower of Christ in America, 30% of them actually go to church. 00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:15.279 So now let's take it a step further. 00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:19.200 We see that there's a lot of different variables, and time won't allow me to get into that. 00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:22.480 There's pain, there's wounds, there's a lot of things that are keeping people from coming. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:28.480 But what you'll find more than anything is that people have evolved in the way that they even see the church. 00:12:29.039 --> 00:12:31.120 They they just see it as something different. 00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:37.919 They have turned from being a place of covenant and commitment to being a place of convenience and consumerism. 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:42.639 So now when I look at the church, it's more so what do they have to offer me? 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:47.360 And then what we'll see more frequently is that people are going church shopping. 00:12:47.600 --> 00:12:50.639 Well, I'll go to a church and I'll go to this church and I'll go to that church, I'll go to that church. 00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:53.279 Now, now for me, that stuff is perfectly fine. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:13:00.960 We don't own people, we don't we don't get to determine any of that stuff, but here's what I recognize that I believe the enemy tries to do to sneak us in. 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:06.879 If I don't get rooted in an environment, then that environment doesn't know enough about me to challenge me. 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:10.720 And because they don't know enough about me to challenge me, I never get better. 00:13:10.879 --> 00:13:20.080 And so whenever I see something, experience something, then it's easy for me to move on to the next thing, and then it's always them, and it's never something that God wants to do through them to actually help me to get better. 00:13:20.559 --> 00:13:33.759 So I believe that the enemy is using our elusive definition of how we view church and how we engage church with the value of the church, but I believe he's using that as a tool to keep us from being rooted in an environment and with a community that can actually help us to grow. 00:13:34.240 --> 00:13:41.919 Keeping us from being in a space that can say, Hey, I've known you for the past five years and I notice something a little bit different about that way that you're talking about your wife now. 00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:43.120 Tell me what's going on. 00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:51.279 But if I go into a spot and I sit in the back and no one knows me, there's no one there that's gonna challenge me and confront me in a loving way that can actually help me to be able to get better. 00:13:51.919 --> 00:13:56.399 This was the intent of the early church and the way that God had seen it. 00:13:56.720 --> 00:14:15.279 And I believe that these statistics are not meant to be something that makes us afraid, but it's meant to be a wake-up call for the church and making sure that we're not in this place where whether we say your clothing or not, but we're becoming legalistic about the outward appearance or the way you present yourself and using that as a metric to determine your salvation, we've got to do better at that. 00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:23.759 But we also gotta do a better job at understanding what it means to be committed to something so that I can grow and be a part of something so I can watch it grow. 00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:33.440 So I want to spend the next couple of moments just unpacking some principles around the church that I think can help us, but also help those who may be joining us a little bit later. 00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:36.639 Here's the first thing that I want to keep on our radar. 00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:39.200 The church is God's idea. 00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:42.080 The church is God's idea. 00:14:42.639 --> 00:14:55.039 I I realize that there's a lot of different perspectives, a lot of different opinions, a lot of different experiences, a lot of things that we've all have gone through, but I want to make sure that we get this first that the church is God's idea. 00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:59.759 That man didn't create this, that man is simply trying to steward what God has created. 00:14:59.840 --> 00:15:01.519 It's it's God's idea. 00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:04.159 Let me tell us how we we arrive at this point. 00:15:04.320 --> 00:15:08.320 From the very beginning, God's desire was to have a relationship with mankind. 00:15:08.399 --> 00:15:12.799 And mankind's assignment was to bear the image of God, to reflect him into the world. 00:15:12.960 --> 00:15:15.200 That was our ultimate assignment from the very beginning. 00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:16.240 We were called to do that. 00:15:16.399 --> 00:15:19.759 Sin enters into the picture, and now the relationship has been fractured. 00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:21.679 God's redemptive plan kicks in. 00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:32.159 So from Adam all the way to Abraham, you see God working with individuals hoping that they could be a representative of him so that they can be set apart, so they could draw people closer back to him. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:44.399 Then he begins to zero in and he decides that the Israelites are going to be the people that he's going to use to set up as a holy nation that can then give birth to the Messiah that will then bring people back, Jew and Gentile. 00:15:44.559 --> 00:15:53.440 We continue to move forward, and now we arrive at the point where Jesus comes, born through the lineage of the tribe of Judah, and now he's the one who has Gentile blood in him. 00:15:53.600 --> 00:16:11.120 He also has messianic and Jewish blood in him, and through his ministry and through his life, he now unites us all together, what Paul refers to in Ephesians as one new man, a group of people that are all called to be set apart, that are connected, that are distinct from the world, something that God has created that is meant to draw people back to him. 00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:12.559 That's the church. 00:16:12.960 --> 00:16:14.480 That was God's idea. 00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:34.000 To give you a vision of what God views as the church, 1 Peter 2 says it this way But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises to the love of who are called out of darkness into the marvelous light. 00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:37.440 God's plan included the church. 00:16:37.759 --> 00:16:39.759 The church is part of God's plan. 00:16:40.159 --> 00:16:42.000 The church is God's idea. 00:16:42.639 --> 00:16:52.480 We begin to understand that this is not something that we arbitrarily engage in, but we understand that God has given the church to be the part of the redemptive plan to bring all men back to Him. 00:16:52.639 --> 00:16:54.639 It's all God's idea. 00:16:55.039 --> 00:16:59.120 We have a part to play and engage in it, but this is supposed to be the space that is God's idea. 00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:01.919 So here's the next point that I think can help to bring this home. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:02.960 Why is it God's idea? 00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:05.440 Because the church is a beacon of hope. 00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:09.519 The church is meant to be a beacon of hope. 00:17:10.240 --> 00:17:14.160 Matthew chapter 5, verse number 14, Jesus says these words. 00:17:14.240 --> 00:17:17.680 He says, You are light of the world. 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:22.640 A city situated on a hill that cannot be hidden. 00:17:23.440 --> 00:17:27.920 Now when he's speaking about his people, he's saying that we're living in a dark world. 00:17:28.079 --> 00:17:35.599 And there are some people that are out there that are wandering around and they're they're stumbling in darkness and they're struggling with how to survive and how to exist and how to live. 00:17:35.759 --> 00:17:41.200 And what he's saying is, I'm collecting a group of people that I want them to be light in the middle of the darkness. 00:17:41.359 --> 00:17:54.880 I'm calling for a group of people to be set apart, to be set above, so that when people are wandering and they're looking for a place that they can go, they will look up and see that the church is a place that I can go and that I can engage the love and grace and power of God. 00:17:55.440 --> 00:18:02.319 Throughout history, we have seen that the church has served as a beacon to cause significant shifts. 00:18:02.559 --> 00:18:14.640 We're going to talk about the flaws in a moment, but I just want to highlight that the church was on the front end of so many national movements that helped to bring restoration and reconciliation and that helped give birth to the ideas of unity and peace. 00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:20.720 This was all birthed through the church because the church was meant to serve as a beacon of hope. 00:18:21.200 --> 00:18:33.440 When people are at their wits' end and when they're at the end of their rope, the church was meant to be the place that you know that you can come to, where you can experience grace and love and peace and forgiveness and a space where you know that you belong. 00:18:33.920 --> moving around the neighborhood, engaging with different people at different times, it was really awkward because everywhere I went, they would just ask me if I knew a random celebrity in America. if that this would make common sense. 00:22:12.079 --> 00:22:23.759 But but I remember I was engaged in attending a church, and there were some things that really disappointed me, I'll put it that way, some things that I define as significant setbacks and things that really challenge me. 00:22:24.079 --> 00:22:28.720 And so as I'm as I'm navigating through this, I I withdrew from that church. the church was birthed, and by the time we get to Acts 6, that they're already dealing with conflict. 00:24:35.920 --> 00:24:41.359 That the Bible says that while they were there doing ministry, that there was a group of people that they called Hellenistic. 00:24:41.440 --> 00:24:46.160 These were people who were Greek-speaking people who were following Jesus in messianic ways. 00:24:46.240 --> 00:24:48.799 And what the Bible says is that they were being treated differently. 00:24:49.039 --> 00:24:51.119 They were being segregated from everyone else. 00:24:51.440 --> 00:24:53.839 And so what scripture says is they began to complain about it. 00:24:53.920 --> 00:25:00.799 And the apostles came in, they recognized this messiness, and they said, Well, hey, let us put a system in place to make sure everyone is treated equally. 00:25:01.200 --> 00:25:10.079 It doesn't take long for us to flip a couple of pages where we find that Paul confronts Peter because Peter began to distance himself from Gentiles. 00:25:10.400 --> 00:25:13.839 Paul literally said, I had to confront him about it because he needed to be corrected. 00:25:14.960 --> 00:25:23.839 But then we also see with Paul that he had issues with John Mark because John Mark didn't continue in the missionary field and he was upset with them to the point that they almost came to blows. 00:25:25.279 --> 00:25:28.079 That's why I love the Bible, because the Bible doesn't cover any of this stuff. 00:25:28.559 --> 00:25:35.920 The Apostle Paul, this man that we elevate so high, was literally about to throw blows with 00:25:40.559 --> 00:25:49.440 But even in its messiness, even in his, even in its chaos, even in its challenges, God is showing us that we can still believe that God is using it to do something 00:26:50.160 And if we can put these things in place, that we can hold people accountable, we can challenge things that we don't understand, we can look at the God vision, we can measure how we're Jesus being the Messiah, and the gate of hell will not prevail against it. 00:27:28.400 --> 00:27:36.880 See, what I want us to understand is that when Jesus makes this statement, that he's standing literally in a spot where they used to do human sacrifices. 00:27:37.759 --> 00:27:45.920 So when he makes this statement, it was understood culturally at that time that that location was literally 00:28:03.119 Peter says that you're the Messiah, and he says, it's on that revelation, I'm going to build my church that I am Lord, and I'm standing on the enemy's battleground, and I'm saying that the gates of hell will not prevail against my church. 00:28:03.359 --> 00:28:17.279 That means that even though we live in a world that is filled with darkness, that even though we live in a world that seems like chaos is all around us, the reason why I am not afraid is because of that very passage, because the gates of hell will not prevail against the people of God. 00:28:17.440 --> 00:28:32.720 And when we understand the power and the anointing and the authority and the influence that God has given us, that we can get out of prevent defense and get out of this space we're afraid messy and beautiful at the same time. 00:31:23.519 --> 00:31:35.039 And then last week, I go onto social media and I see that he is ordained to be the pastor of the very thing that I was when I and how hopeless he felt, losing his father, being in a chaotic situation, and him just showing up at church and responding to a message, and he just kept showing up, and he made mistakes, but he kept
