forerunner, the one who kind of set the tone for Jesus to come and perform his ministry, he makes the statement when Jesus comes on the scene. 00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:04.079 He says that I must decrease in order for him to increase. 00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:09.199 The ultimate thought for us in this series is this if we want to see more of God, it has to be less of us. 00:02:09.360 --> to Abram in a vision, and he said to him, Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you and your reward will be great. 00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:48.080 But Abram replied, Oh Lord, what good are all of these blessings when I don't even have a son? 00:02:48.400 --> 00:02:55.280 Since you have not given me any children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household will inherit my wealth. 00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:00.479 You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir. 00:03:00.719 --> 00:03:07.680 Then the Lord said to him, No, your servant will not be 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:34.240 Again, I mean we're Genesis, so we're only one chapter in. 00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:39.280 But this sets the tone that righteousness is found in faith and not in works. 00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:45.520 Abraham, if you're familiar with the story of Abraham, you often may hear songs like, Oh, Abraham who had many sons. 00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:48.240 You may hear about Abraham being the father of the faith. 00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:59.120 The reason why we make that statement is because we see for the first time in scripture that that true salvation, that true righteousness is not found in behavior, it's found in belief. 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:01.680 And because we believe, it changes our behavior. 00:04:01.919 --> 00:04:09.039 It's a radical idea that that religion somehow has gotten wrong, where we often make people believe that you have to behave in order to belong. 00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:14.000 But the kingdom of God says that you belong well before you behave because of faith. 00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:16.319 Abram had set the tone for what that looks like. 00:04:16.399 --> 00:04:25.759 So now here at verse number seven, it says that then the Lord told him, I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Kaldines to give you this land as your possession. 00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:31.360 But Abram replied, Oh sovereign Lord, how can you be how can I be sure that I will actually possess it? 00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:40.079 The Lord told him, Bring me a three-year-old heifer, uh, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, turtle dove, and a young pigeon. 00:04:40.240 --> 00:04:44.480 So Abram presented all these things to him and killed them. 00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:49.279 He cut each animal down the middle and laid them in halves by the side. 00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:51.680 But he did not, however, cut the birds in half. 00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:54.639 I know that's a little grotesque, it's a little barbaric, it's old testament. establish this idea of what a covenant is. 00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:05.680 Whenever a covenant was established, it required the cutting of something. 00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:10.879 And then what would happen is God would come in and he would walk in the middle of the sacrifice. 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:17.360 And what he was saying is, if I don't fulfill my word, what has happened to the animals, let that happen to me. 00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:27.600 That was the way of God saying, I'm so committed to what I'm saying that as we slaughter these animals, if I don't come through on my promise, then let what happened to those animals happen to me. 00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:38.800 This is why when we see the ultimate, um, the ultimate culmination of Jesus' death on the cross, it should give us some encouragement because Jesus' death on the cross was the ultimate culmination of the perfect sacrifice. 00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:48.879 So when we come to church, when we have moments where we're feeling a little bit weak, we should be encouraged in knowing that if God doesn't fulfill what he says he's going to do, then what has happened to Jesus is going to happen to him. 00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:50.480 That's encouraging. 00:05:50.639 --> 00:05:58.879 That's how covenants are established, that God is so, so faithful to his word that he's willing to literally put his existence on the line if he doesn't follow through. 00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:06.800 Aren't you grateful that we serve a God that is willing to send such a strong message to us and saying that I am for you and that I am with you? 00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:15.519 Verse number 11, our last verse, it says this, and some vultures swoop down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away. 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:28.399 Today I want to talk to us a little bit about those moments when when the word of God, the person of God, the leading and prompting of God encounters our reality and it requires us to make some amen. 00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:13.759 I've been I've been thinking a little bit about just different moments in my life that I consider to kind of serve as milestones as I'm trying to do a better job at communicating to my children different things that I found important when I was coming up. 00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:19.040 And I still remember vividly that that moment when I feel like I shifted into a new dimension. 00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:25.279 And that is when I went to the car dealership and bought my first brand new car, no co-signer, all on my own. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:26.480 Boy had good when I knew that I wanted to go and get this vehicle, but I also knew that I wanted to get a stick shift. 00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:55.600 Anybody in here remember what a manual transmission is? drive a stick shift, that then you are indeed a real man. 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:21.759 I felt like it was something about it that's like anybody can drive an automatic, a real man can drive a stick 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:55.840 I pull out and and I'm and I'm driving and I'm figuring out first gear, get into second gear, and then I'm I'm stalling out sometimes because I'm forgetting to hit the moment where I had to get on the highway. 00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:43.279 And here's the thing up to that point, I've gotten fairly decent at the hills, I got fairly decent at stopping and not stalling driving, I'm recognizing now I'm trying to keep up with traffic, and the engine starts getting louder and louder because I'm not in gear. 00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:05.120 So I didn't realize that, hey, should just not do, I finally realized, oh, there's other gears I gotta shift into. 00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:17.759 So I shifted to fourth gear, fifth gear, and then things got a lot smoother. 00:11:17.919 --> 00:11:26.480 See, when I was reading the books, all the things that I read, I was I was intellectually trying to check off all the boxes, but when it came to shifting gears, I just other people say. 00:11:31.919 --> 00:11:33.440 Like you just gotta feel it for yourself. 00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:39.600 So I am grinding the gears, but I finally got to a place where I learned how to feel when it was time to shift gears. 00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:44.720 Because here's the important thing about shifting gears you have to shift gear to engage where the power is. 00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:57.120 See, when you're when you're not in the right gear, the problem is there's another power, there's another, there's another thing that you have access to, but as long as you're in the wrong gear, you're capping out your potential. 00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:13.600 The truth of the matter is I recognize that there's many of us that we have recognized that there's moments in our lives that we are not in gear, that there's areas of our lives where we're in neutral, there's areas of our lives where we can't seem to get out of second gear, and no matter what we try to do, it seems like we're stuck there. 00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:30.080 But I believe that my assignment here today is to encourage you that it is time for you to shift gears, that God has given you permission to shift gears, that grace, you have the grace to shift gears, that there's a moment that we all recognize where you just gotta feel that I can't stay here any longer. 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:31.840 I can't be in this place any longer. 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.159 It is time for me to shift gears. 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:37.279 I have to shift gears to engage where the power is. 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:40.960 This is what God is ultimately encouraging every single one of us. 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:49.519 And I believe I'm talking to one of three people, those of us who are in neutral, where we're not in any gear, and we're just allowing the winds and the waves and the hills to determine our momentum. 00:12:49.679 --> 00:12:57.919 I think there's other of us who are maybe in first gear, second gear, but we can't seem to get out of that gear that we're in, that gear of comfort, because God wants to do a new thing in us. 00:12:58.080 --> 00:13:08.720 We're not engaging the power of God, but I also believe there's some of us who are in a gear too high, stalling out on the verge of burning out because we're trying to we're trying to accomplish something that God didn't give us the grace to do. 00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:13.519 It's possible to be out of gray out of gear when our ambition outpaces our grace. 00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:19.759 And just because you have to downshift to engage where the power is, doesn't mean you have to downgrade your dreams. 00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:26.799 Sometimes you need to right size where you are to engage where the power of God is instead of allowing your ambition to outpace grace. 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:31.919 But I believe that God has sent me here to tell you this it is time for you to get it into gear. 00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:36.720 It is time for you to begin to move forward, it is time for you to shift gears. 00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:42.559 This is really ultimately what we're talking about when we look at this passage that we find ourselves in. 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:48.559 That we find ourselves looking at Abram, who up to this point has had a very challenging life. 00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:55.440 He was called by God, he was called to do some amazing things, called to have uh children and all the impact he was called to do. 00:13:55.519 --> 00:14:00.639 But ultimately, everything that God called him to do became the very areas that he faced resistance in. 00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:04.720 He was dealing with tension with his family when God said you're gonna have an increase of family. 00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:08.080 He was dealing with tension with resources when God said you're gonna be abundantly blessed. 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:18.080 Is it interesting that there's moments where we hear a word from God and then we begin to recognize that the very thing that he promises that he's gonna give us is the thing that seems the most absent right now. 00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:22.240 Abram's at a point where he's he's understandably exhausted. 00:14:22.399 --> 00:14:29.840 Abram's at a point where after many years of waiting for the promises of God to come to fruition, that he just hasn't seen it in his life. 00:14:30.159 --> 00:14:33.600 He just came back from going to war and he's understandably exhausted. 00:14:33.679 --> 00:14:39.440 So when God speaks to him, when God shows up to him, God begins the conversation by doing a couple of things. 00:14:39.679 --> 00:14:42.799 The first thing he does is he reminds him that he's blessed. 00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:46.080 But Abram can't reconcile the word of God with his reality. 00:14:46.240 --> 00:14:52.399 But then God begins to follow up with this statement I am the God who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees. 00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:54.399 Here's why that's so significant. 00:14:54.559 --> 00:15:00.240 Because God was giving him coded language to say, remember when you were trapped in paganism and you were away from me. 00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:04.480 Remember when you were destitute, remember when you didn't have any promises. 00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:07.039 I'm the God who led you from a place of bondage. 00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:09.120 I'm the God who led you to a place of victory. 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:11.679 I'm the God that led you through Egypt, that gave you provision. 00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:19.360 I'm the God that also allowed that even when your nephew Lot was taken hostage, for you to successfully go and be victorious and retrieving him. 00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:25.039 I am the same God who has brought you through all these other seasons, and I'm the same God that is with you right now. 00:15:25.279 --> 00:15:29.679 I believe that is a message for somebody right now, because right now we are looking at what we don't have. 00:15:29.759 --> 00:15:34.240 But I believe that I'm here to tell you that he's the same God that brought you out of that broken relationship. 00:15:34.399 --> 00:15:40.320 He's the same God that brought you healing, he's the same God that gave you the job you had before, so he's gonna give you the job that you're gonna have next. 00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:44.080 That he's the same God that has brought you through things that you never thought you would survive. 00:15:44.399 --> 00:15:47.679 He is the same God, and those are the things that we anchor our faith in. 00:15:47.840 --> 00:16:03.440 This is the this is the moment where Abram is now confronted with the power and presence of God, and God begins to speak some words to him, that's gonna require him to have to shift gears. 00:16:03.679 --> 00:16:09.840 I believe that this is a a description of what happens with with Abram, but I believe it's also a prescription of what we need to do. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.159 I want you to write these three things down that I think can be an encouragement for you. 00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:19.679 Here's the first thing that we gotta do if we're really trying to make room for God and shift and get things into gear. 00:16:19.840 --> 00:16:21.679 We have to shift our walk. 00:16:22.320 --> 00:16:25.039 We have to shift the way that we walk. 00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:33.120 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 7 says that we walk by faith and not by sight. 00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:39.360 That's the instruction of God's word that there's there's a place where we walk by faith and 00:20:09.039 And now what can happen in those moments is where we used once to have this idea is that I walk by faith because God said it, we begin to say, I will walk once I see it, and then I'll 00:23:16.480 --> 00:23:23.759 But the Bible also instructs us that it's possible to create new pathways, to create new patterns, to have a new way that we think about things. 00:23:23.920 --> 00:23:27.680 But that only happens through repetition and adequate exposure. 00:23:27.839 --> 00:23:36.400 We gotta see something different, and then we have to repeat it over and over again, and then
