Tony Baker is a comedian, actor, creator, and lifelong astronomy fan who came into this conversation ready with the National Geographic space book that first got him hooked as a kid.

Welcome back to Dr. Star Kid. I'm your host, Dr. Dakota Tyler, and we have a very special guest, a very funny man, Tony Baker. I appreciate you being here, bro. Hey man, I'm honored, man. I'm a fan. Yeah. Are you a fan of space in general? Are you a fan of science?

Like, what gets your attention? I'm absolutely like uh I've been into astronomy since I was a kid. Matter of fact, I'll show you the book that got me into Oh, he came with a textbook with him.

Okay. Is it a uh I don't think I read that? Is it like a general astronomy? What is that?

A tech so it's a National Geographic picture atlas of our universe by uh Roy Roy Gallett. And yeah, so you know they drew up some crazy visuals in here and it gives you information. It's funny how dated this book is because this came out in the 80. Yeah, oh yeah, but this time it was like you know, Jupiter has 14 moons, yeah, Saturn has 18.

I think so. It is wild how much more like every 10 years we learn. It's pretty crazy. What does so? Do you think do you feel like thinking about space in that way like impacts you in your life? Or do you is it just like some cool something that's cool to to know and to think about?

I I think of it, you know, on both on both terms because you know it's all it's all connected for us. I know a lot of humans like to stay in their little mental bubble of just like making money, you know what I'm saying, clothes, dating, yeah. But for me, I always think like on a on a deeper level when it comes to our existence, how we are put together, how life on this planet evolved, where did this come from, what's responsible for this, what's out there in space. I'm always thinking about like space. It's like when I think about how far everything is, how big every galaxy is, and how many there are, I'm just like, my nose starts to bleed. It's just like, yo, this is crazy. And so I'm always thinking about like whatever happens to us when we pass away. I just hope that if there is a consciousness and existence after that, I hope that we can see what's out there. As as energy, as as whatever, whatever the case may be. Because I am a man, I do believe in God, but I also believe in science. And I feel like, you know, if God, if God is the ultimate, God can make things make sense. So I didn't catch the the last part. You say that again?

Oh, what was the last thing you heard? Um, just when you think about space, all the galaxies, the stars, the size of everything.

So it's oh, what I was saying was like when we pass away, uh-huh, you know what I'm saying? None of us know what truly happens. But if we do, if we do, if our consciousness or our energy does remain, I hope that we can then see what's out there.

Yeah, yeah, as opposed to us just imagining and trying to think about what it's like. I feel like I spent a lot of my time thinking about what life could be like on other planets. I remember I had this one thought. Uh, I used to play football in college and I got hurt. I blew my knee out and eventually realized that I wasn't gonna be able to play anymore. And one of the things that um kind of opened my mind was I started watching these astronomy documentaries, and I learned that there was other planets in other solar systems. And a cool thought that I had was that that there was like life forms on those planets that were probably thinking the same thoughts that I was, like there's something in their life didn't go right. Um, you know, maybe maybe they got sports on other planets, and it's something like tentacle ball or something like that. And like what it the feeling is that everything is crashing down. Like, uh, how long have you been doing uh comedy?

So I've been doing comedy 18 years. That's a minute.

Yeah, what were you doing before that?

SPEAKER_00

So I came out here to California for acting, and um I was living in New Mexico before here. So I went from Chicago to New Mexico, I went to New Mexico State University, and then um that's when I discovered like I always knew that I was in the astronomy, but the other science classes around astronomy was kicking my ass. Yeah academics, you know what I'm saying? I couldn't keep up with the chemistry, the ecology, the genetics, but astronomy I ace. You know, and so but I've always wanted to act ever since I was a kid. So I did theater on campus, uh did a play off campus, move to Cali. And so I was out here for acting, and I was just like, yo, how am I gonna get discovered? And I was like, let me try stand up as a way of exposure. Did stand up one time, fell in love with it, boom, haven't stopped since, except for the pandemic.

That's a big that takes courage. That takes a lot of guts to get up and stand up in this front of a stage in front of um a bunch of strangers, yeah, and just try to try to make them laugh. That's that's tough.

Yeah, yeah. It's fun though, it's exciting because even for the seasoned vet, you never know what you're gonna get. Because every live audience is different, every energy is different. So even your try-and-chue material might not hit the same Friday night the way it did Saturday, or whatever the case may be. So there's always an excitement to that, and then to create new stuff all the time. Yeah.

Yeah. Do you feel like when you when you go into a room, whether it's that you you're about to go on stage or maybe you're actually on stage and you're going through your set, do you feel like you're observing every everything in the audience to try and peep like the energy levels, or I don't know, like pick up on people's vibes and like suss something out? You feel like you're observing in that way?

Absolutely. Uh a thousand percent. Like there's nothing in the room that I don't know. Like once I get up there or scanning the room. As I talk, you know, I'm always all over the place scanning the room. Um, if something when I'm on when I'm on tour for a headliner weekend, I I usually stick to the material. Like I usually stick to my set list. But when I host my monthly show at Flappers and Burbank, that's when I'm more in the moment. I'm hosting, I'm coming off the top, I'll just talk about whatever. Um so I have more audience interactions at those types of shows. But um, but I yeah, I noticed everything. Like, you know what I'm saying? This person's not laughing, this person, oh, you're having a good time. Oh, y'all just had a fight, you know what I'm saying? What's going on in the back? You know, it keeps you sharp. Yeah. And the ultimate night for comedy for me is if I do crowd work and it organically blends into my material that I already have. But this is an organic flow. So to the audience, they like, oh, he just started that. Yeah.

You know, it's straight, it's plant, it's uh, you've been preparing for it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's really dope. I feel like one of the so I call myself a professional observer. What I'm observing obviously is planets and stars, right? But I feel like that act of observation is really not scientific, it's just human that you know, probably one of our superpowers as human. You brought up the fact that we evolved, right? In like the wild, basically. And it was it's such an important skill, especially if you're in a dangerous environment, to be able to observe everything, to recognize patterns. And largely, I feel like we really don't need to do that in modern times. Like we're it's relatively safe, you know. You can kind of like sit in your in your room and order DoorDash. You really don't have to be that observant. But I feel like when you tap into that skill of observing and and recognizing and put it piecing these things together like a puzzle, you really it makes you feel alive because it like taps into something almost primal that I think that we have as humans.

Yeah, because you gotta you gotta observe to survive, especially back then. You know, you're trying to survive the ice age, you trying to survive, you know, animals that are you're the prey. Yeah, you know what I mean? It's and so you know, we as humans, we kind of lost that lost it all because we got it easy now.

We we we made ourselves, you know, we got pretty cushy lives if we compare it to our ancestors. I'll say that.

A thousand percent. Yeah, you know, and some people still have that in certain countries where they still get attacked by like a you know, uh uh a crocodile, or you know, they gotta be mindful of snakes and stuff like that. But as far as the big city populace, we just out here living the dream.

Yeah, yeah, but it's also it's also very weird because it's it's not a very natural environment, and so I think we see, you know, you see elevated levels of people that have anxiety and depression and that sort of thing, because it's this is just a lot to deal with, you know. You get online and you got you you have contact with millions and millions of people. Uh, you know, we're working in front of screens and stuff. This is it's very unnatural. You like you don't find TV screens and computer screens in the wild.

Right. Yeah, man. It's a it's a crazy way of living, man. And in essence, I feel like I feel like everybody should have a down day of just like disconnecting and just taking in your immediate environment for just like a day, if you can, like every every week, just to reconnect and like you know, I I'll I always love just um I'm always thinking about the natural world. Like I walk every day, so I try to walk five miles a day. And then those, you know, in those moments I'm on my phone too, but I'm also taking in the lizards that are always running around and the birds. I'm trying to connect the relationship with crows right now.

Man, yeah, they're so like intelligent, it's crazy.

Yeah, yeah. And if you get if you get a chance to watch them, you can you can definitely tell that they're they're like thinking about something. Yeah, they're doing, and I think it's a cool thing to see. I saw um it was raining, you know, it rarely rains in LA, but it was during one of the months where it was raining. And I went outside and it was two crows. A lot of times I feel like you see them in pairs. So I wonder if they have like best friends or something. Right. And they were just playing in this puddle of water, they were like jumping in and like tagging each other and then hopping out. And I was like, that's you know, because I think we at least growing up, it always felt like hum we have like some different type of consciousness that's above or superior to other animals, but um, it's like I don't I I don't know if that's true because there's some animals that they seem like they have thoughts and stuff going on as well, yeah. And I wonder what that experience is like.

I I love it. Like uh here, so I just set up a camera where I leave like peanuts, and now I've been leaving cashews out in front of the house. So I'll set up a camera so I can see when they show up. And a lot of times, sometimes I'll catch them when I come back from my walk. It'll be like a group of them kind of just grabbing the last few peanuts and then just flying off. But I can tell that they're they're starting to realize that you know this is the spot for the good snacks, bro. Like, you know what I'm saying? And they're growing, like, you know, at first it was like one, maybe two. Now one day it was like five. And I was just like, oh, the words is getting around. Yeah, yeah. And I I can watch them like make sure the coast is clear. Like one just walked across the street, he was kind of looking around. He would look up at the podium, kind of look around, come around from different angles, look, look again, try to get the angle, like, how can I grab it real quick? Yeah. Without knocking stuff over. It was just like just watching them process everything in real time is it's crazy.

Yeah, yeah, it's very cool. It's very cool. What if you had to uh if you had to be an animal, what what animal would you want to be?

My favorite animal of all time is a tiger, right? What that's pretty badass. Yeah, that's my favorite of all time. But when I think about the life of a tiger, you know, a solitary, which I don't mind. They love the water, which I don't mind. But it's just every meal is hard earned, man.

It's like you got you got that though in you. You uh it you're a comedian, you go around like you're the you're the talent. It is that is what you're doing, right? It's like yeah, you doing a mop, you're doing a modern version of of like hunting and gathering, right? Like you gotta work for your for your food, you gotta work for your meal. Um, but I and I like that. I like that life, like going out and kind of you know, killing what you eat, sort of mentality. Yeah. But I think it takes and I think that right now, uh, you know, in the modern economy and everything, that is it's one of it's a unique time to be able to do that, yeah. To kind of like, especially using social media, to be able to carve out your own path. Right. Yeah. And I'm I'm super grateful to be alive now rather than any other time.

Yeah, I think about that a lot, actually. I'm like, man, man, if we were we were around in the 1800s, 1600s, 1400s, to get it, man. It wasn't like, yeah, man.

No deodorant, and that might be the least of your worries. I know, right? Yeah, nah, they was living back. I mean, you can even put it like this, and it's hard, you know, we have this conversation, and it's like extreme inequality in the US or even around the world, you know, the the poverty line at the US is still way higher than a lot of other countries, yeah. And but if you think about a thousand, two thousand years ago, three thousand years ago, the richest men on earth, the richest kings and queens didn't have heated water, they didn't have indoor plumbing, you know what I mean? They didn't have uh like a proper AC. Oh my god, they didn't have like a fridge that you go to and grab. I mean, you gotta think uh Southern California is so many different groups of people that live here. You could grab Thai food, you could grab Ethiopian food, you could grab whatever whatever it is you want, Italian food. A thousand years ago, you had to go on a horseback or whatever, you had to walk across the entire globe, right? To get the the food that we can get just now. It's crazy, it's a wild, it's crazy time to be alive.

Yeah, and to think to think that we could have been, we could have existed in any one of these time zones. We just happen to be here and now it's like it's crazy. Yeah. To be able to, you know, have access to this knowledge that we can just we can watch YouTube videos, we can read books, watch documentaries, and just take all this knowledge of just like stuff. We can see visuals of just like places that we'll never get to visit, or yeah, you know, just imagine all because I I constantly think about just the evolution of the planet, and like, you know what I'm saying? Like how the moon came to be in theory, just like oh and you know, I'm always imagining like what did the moon look like once it was formed, but it was much closer. Like, you know, I'm always thinking of like what was it like for the dinosaurs before the meteor hit, you know, all kind of stuff.

Yeah, man, and that's even you think about something like that, like the the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, yeah, you realize that you know it was basically random that that happened. But if that never happened, you probably never get people, you never get humans. The T-Rex and and then might still be roaming around because dinosaurs had they had a crazy run of like 150 million years or something like that.

Yeah, yeah. And it's like with those things happen that let or even your existence specifically. If if your great-great great great great great great great grandfather just didn't meet your great-great-great great great great grandmother, right, and or met them at a different time, then that would have changed all the kids down going down the lineage, yeah. So it's like it's damn near impossible that any one of us exist. And I think it for me, I like to frame things in that way because it keeps me, you know, it keeps me from sliding into this everything in the world is horrible. We're living in you know, such like a fucked up time, right? Which can be true, and you can have you can let that cloud you know your entire experience. But I think that there's also a lot of beauty and like a lot of um a lot of positivity and things to look forward to.

For sure. Absolutely. I just marvel at, I just marvel at the the passage of time too. And it's just like like like we said, like, you know, the the last dinosaurs was 65 million years ago. When you wrap your head around how long that is, like 65 million, and it's just like you know, we only gonna be around what 80, 75, 80, 90 years, and it's just like it's crazy to me. Like, you know, I constantly think about just the existence of what is now, and like what it was like then, and they talk about oh, it might have rained on earth for one to two million years, just straight. And I'm just like, yeah, that's wild to think about, right? You know what I'm saying?

It's just amazing. So you said you from the Midwest, right? Yeah, Chicago. I I I am as well. I'm I'm from Indianapolis, and I spent a lot of time in Cincinnati. That's where I did my uh bachelor's in physics. And Cincinnati is a great geological site. There's places there in Ohio that are a great geological site because like a hundred I forget the number, but like a hundred million years ago or something like that, it was a it was a tropical ocean, and so there's a bunch of fossils of animals that lived in the tropical ocean. Yeah, and it's just it's a you go back to you talk about this long amount of time and how things change, it's it's it's crazy, and we can't wrap our head around those time scales, yeah. And you're right, it's like you know, if a human lives to be 80, 90, even 100, right? That's really like nothing.

Yeah. When you when you look at the grand scheme of the scale of just how old everything is, and you know, Earth is considered relatively young compared to some of the other stuff they got going on in the universe. It's like, and that's what always makes me think of just like, you know, what if there's a planet out there that's in the dinosaur phase right now? What if there's a planet out there that you know they're they're way more advanced than they're you know three billion years older than us, so they've already mastered technology or whatever, yeah.

All these different, you know. Do you uh do you think that there's other life out there that's like on our level or beyond in terms of like intelligence and technology and stuff? And go ahead. I'm about to I'm gonna open the lines up a little bit, but I'm still here.

Okay. So for me, given the enormity and the amount of galaxies there are, there has to be life on other planets. It might not be a crazy amount, or it could be. Given the the law of averages, yeah, it it has to be other life out there. Now, now, granted, what type of level that they're on, I don't know, but I have I want to say zero doubt for me that there is life out there. Um and if there is life out there to where they they are super intelligent and they you know have mastered or created space travel, if we have been visited by you know aliens, I don't know about that. Yeah, you don't think so? A lot of people think we have. They do, but that's the one I have zero doubt that there's life. Yeah, yeah. But with the enormity of the universe, of like, yo, how did they master the space travel? To get to get to another galaxy, we we can't get to another galaxy in our lifetime. Right. If we took off today, yeah, we're not getting there.

Even if it's a great point that you brought up there, even if we could break all the rules and travel at the speed of light, like let's say that there's some weird stuff in tech, some technology that you could like bin space or whatever, yeah, like a warp drive, like Star Trek, and say you could travel at the speed of light, it would still take 2.5 million years to get to the Andromeda galaxy, which is the closest large galaxy to us. And it's like 2.5 million years. If you go back 2.5 million years. In Earth's history, it's not Homo sapiens. Like the people are different. They're pretty they're more primitive. They're you know what I mean, they're using sticks and stones. And it's like that's that's just to get to the very closest galaxy. Yeah, I think that I definitely agree with you that if you you know, gun to my head, life absolutely exists out there. That's my answer. Yeah, probably also advanced, um, but that's probably way more rare. I mean, you can just think about on Earth, you know, human. We showed up like today, yeah. But the dinosaurs is around for hundred million years, sharks have been around for like 400 million years, which is a crazy stat. The sharks are older than trees.

They've been existing longer than trees have been around, yeah, which is wild. But yeah, it's just like that distance thing, it's just so hard to overcome that.

So I think I'm I think I'm with you. It's a little bit sad because I think you know, just using my imagination, I think it would be dope to encounter another species. And what if it was an ancient species, like you said, that has been around for like a billion years? Can you can we even think about what a life form looks like? Like humans in a billion years, what would we look like? I don't know. Right, I don't know what we would look like, I don't know what what we would think, what we would be doing. It's fun to think about though. Are you in the sci-fi?

Hell yeah, absolutely. Yeah, a thousand percent. So I'm all I'm always thinking of like those terms of just like if we were around, let's say we were around a billion more years where we didn't screw everything up and end our entire existence. And like, you know, I just think about the advancements of technology, the natural evolution of our you know, biological makeup, you know what I'm saying? What are we gonna be doing that we weren't doing, you know, in this day and age? And it's just it's just and you're right, it's sad that given the the distance of everything, like we can't just we can't just pull up to another, you know, planet with life and like, oh, we can breathe here, yo. You know what I'm saying? It's just like like how they do it in the movies, man. They just they just roam with around, yeah.

They just pull up, they can breathe the air, it's cool. You can eat the food. You know, another cool thing to think about, or an interesting thing to think about, is that if you went to another planet, even if it did have life, yeah, even if it did have life, you probably couldn't eat any of the food there, right? Because it's like you think about on earth, most of the plants we can't eat, like we can't eat grass, we can't eat you know, trees. A lot of animals are poisonous to us. Um, you know, we have to like cook everything very well, and so it's like we have a our digestive system has evolved and adapted to eat some of the things on earth, yeah. So if you go somewhere else, there's like no guarantee that that you're gonna have food that you could even digest, like right, less yet poison you or something like that, for sure.

Like even when we take a trip to Mexico, right? You gotta be careful, man. You gotta drink that bottle water. Like the last two times I went to Mexico tore my stomach up. So I'm just and that's just that's just the country down, you know. I'm not even that far. So you know you go to another planet, man. We're done.

Yeah, yeah. That's uh that's wild. I also think that uh, you know, to back to the life discussion, the like microorganisms, which are really what dominate, they've been dominant way longer than dinosaurs and anything. Because when you drink water in a place that you're uh foreigner to, that's what you're that's what's making you sick, is that they probably they have like some microorganisms, some bacteria or whatever that's in the water that your body just isn't used to. And I think it's crazy that if you you know, just by the numbers, it's not even close. Like bacteria basically is dominant on earth. That's like the dominant life form, yeah.

Yeah, but it doesn't get the credit though, because we can't see it, so it never gets the props that it deserves, but yeah, it's all about that microorganism, and you know, then then what they expanded and grew into. And I'm just like this stuff is amazing, man. It's like and I I get mad at people for not really. I mean, you know, teachers on, but how can you not be fascinated by stuff like this? Because this is the reason for the season, man. Yeah, you know what I mean. Everything else is irrelevant in the in the grand scheme of things, but you know, people are just like, eh, you know what I'm saying, shopping, you know, coming out to the internet. You know what I mean? It's just like, yeah, yeah.

Well, you know, it's I feel I I that resonates with me at the same time. Um I feel like I it may I understand it because we get socialized and we get conditioned to think that oh what life well what life is really about is like just running up the biggest bag as possible, or like that's a message that we get, you know. And I think that it takes some, it takes like reflection to be like, hold up, what do I actually care about? What matters to me? What do I think is uh important, what are my values, whatever.

Yeah, yeah, man. And I I've I can't remember what exactly, I can't remember the exact moment of when everything hit me on a astronomy level. It was like when I was a kid, I saw my brother had the R Universe book, so I kept looking at the pictures and just like, oh, the sun is huge. It's just finding these little things out. And like, I remember a neighbor of mine, his name was Maurice, he used to lie all the time. But he just he was lying, he would lie all the time. He was like, Yo, you know that clouds used to be down here on earth with us, and everybody they pushed them up with poles. That's why they're in the sky. And we just like, okay. He was like, you know, there's worms every time you wash your hair, there's worms up there that grow every time. And if it rains while the sun is out, the devil is beating his wife, and it was just he was just all over the place with just like crazy stuff, but it's still just and I'm still just taking everything in, and I'm looking at like, you know, Haley's comet is bigger than Earth, you know that, right? And like, you know, because I was alive when Haley came came through here last.

That was like 80, I think it was 86.

Okay, okay. So we still got a little white, we got still a little ways before he comes back, yeah.

And I was around then because I was born in 77, so I was just like, Oh, snap, you know what I mean? And uh, so that you know, and I was in Chicago in the city, so I couldn't see a lot of the stars. All I could see was Orion, yeah, big the Big Dipper because of the but I was still like Ma, can you give me a telescope? Like, I beg for a telescope, uh-huh. And then so I started getting into you know astrology for fun, but it's all connected, and it's all connected, and that's a lot of people ask me about astrology, and I think that you know, just I guess for reference, there's a difference between astronomy and astrology.

Yeah, the first thing that existed was astrology, and it makes sense. You imagine the earliest humans, like we talked about, they're uh they're observers, they're making observations, they're finding all these patterns. They also see Orion's belt, right? And the big paper, and they see the other stars, and they realize that over the course of the year, the stars actually change with the seasons, right? And so if you if you are paying attention, you can basically treat the night sky like a calendar and even like a clock on any given night to let you know like when is the sun about to come up, and that can help you out. Uh, you think about a hunter-gatherer lifestyle or even even an early farmer, it lets you know when to plant the crops, when to pull the crops back, uh, when is it time to migrate to follow the deer or the buffalo or you know, whatever it is that um that is important to you, and so it makes so much sense why early cultures come up with their own mythology, their own astronomy. Um, and as far as I know, all all early cultures did have something like that, right? You know, the one that we I think learn about is mostly like the West, like the Greek in the Roman one, because that's like you know, Western science. But every you know, all cultures had their own version of that, which I think is really cool. And then, you know, I also as an astrophysicist, I also feel like I'm connected to the universe. Yeah, it's true that the atoms on Earth came from stars that exploded, like that's that's true. Like we know we know that that is where this stuff comes from, right? So it's like in a very literal way, we are a part of the universe, like we are a part of the story of things that happens in the universe.

That's that's the famous saying, and it's uh and it's literally true, yeah. Which is is pretty cool. So um, but yeah, you said that you got into like astrology first and then astronomy, and then like what's the and then it was just like something that you kept going.

Yeah, because it was just like I was just always fascinated by, you know, was it once I learned about astrology, just like, oh, I'm a Taurus, and you know, saying Taurus is connected to Venus, and then you know what I'm saying, and then I remember uh I remember I'm the youngest of three boys, right? And so I remember my brother coming in the house and be like, Hey, you can see Venus, Venus is outside, and in my mind, I'm just like, yo, I'm thinking Venus is gonna be the size of the moon and bigger. It's just like moving past, yeah, moving past Earth, and just like, oh snap, you know, not knowing that it was gonna be like a another star in the sky, but uh that just piqued my interest of just like, oh, Venus is the is the closest planet. Like, oh, okay. And that's like, yo, I want a telescope. I want to be able to look at Venus, yeah. Moon up close, and then you know, then I memorized all the zodiac signs and when the dates were and who they were connected to. And I had this little uh astrology book that my mom gave me. So I was into that, still reading the R Universe book. Matter of fact, the book I showed you is my second, I had to reorder it because the old one just was falling apart. Yeah. But and even though it was outdated, you know, with the info, it was just those visuals just really, really just got me glued into astronomy. And I've been there ever since. And this was this was like, I want to say third grade, maybe. But it was just, but but like I said, man, like once I found out, oh, it's a lot of math involved, because I've never been good with math, yeah outside of outside of division, like fractions just kicked my ass. And then but I get the ideas and the concepts of astronomy. That's why I was able to get an A in it in college. Like the teacher was fantastic, yeah. I'm actually interested in the source material, and you know, learning about you know the axis of different planets and the correlation, the temperature. Why is it like this? Tidal locking and all that, all that good stuff. This is the interesting, man.

It is, and it's it is it's so interesting learning that that story. And the math, I think, is a big hurdle. It was a big hurdle for me when I got back into going to school. Yeah, I yeah, like I didn't know math or do well in math in high school or anything like that. So I kind of had to like start all the way over in uh when I started at community college, and I started taking algebra trig and then kind of like built my way all the way up through finishing the PhD. But the math is it's like learning another language, yeah. Um, and you gotta, but the thing that I found is that because I never thought that I was a math person either either. The thing that I found is that, and this was something that I think I took from uh foot my time playing football, is that if you just if you just do it enough, like if you practice it enough and do enough repetitions, yeah, like if you can if you can keep from getting so bored that you're like, ah nah, like it's that's not really what I'm into, then you can you can learn it. And um, I think that also when I'm doing my videos and communication or speaking about it or whatever, yeah, that's also why I never really spend too much time getting down in the weeds and the the technical um, you know, the mathematic the bringing up too many formulas and that sort of thing. Because I think it's um you don't you can communicate it and understand it, like get the gist of things without without turning it into like a lit a classroom lecture, per se.

Yeah, because that's where you lose a lot of people once you once you pull out the graph, yeah. You gotta you got a formula, you got the X outside of the parentheses, and you out, you got letters and numbers coexisting. I'm out. I'm just like you lost me. I just yeah, I'm in the rear view mirror rolling in the background as you move forward.

And it's uh yeah, and that's an interesting, and I know that like I know that experience because I got and this is why I like doing science communication because when I got injured, it was through watching. Did you ever watch Cosmos? Yeah, yeah, with Carlson, yeah, with Sagan, and then there was another one with Neil deGrasse Tyson. Yes, absolutely. I had that on repeat, the one with Neil. I watched, I probably that's what got me into astronomy. That's what got me wanting to do it. Yeah, it literally came out right around the time that I was finishing up my um career at University of Kentucky playing ball, and it was you know, the visuals are so cool, they had like this excellent score and orchestra, and he just he talked about the things in a way he's like very animated, and he's just a great communicator, yeah. And I was like, Yes, because he he presented this field basically to somebody that had no background in it, like myself, right, and made me interested in it, even though I didn't have like whatever the the knowledge to understand some of the math and that sort of thing. And I'm like, that's I think that that's really important because sometimes people don't people don't know that this is something that they're interested in if they never really came into contact with the information.

Yeah, this it's funny, man. When when that came on Netflix, man, I literally I I breezed through every episode and I find myself putting it on repeat. I was like, I'm gonna start from the beginning, and then I'll still come back to it. And I was just like, and that was my introduction to Neil. I was like, yo, who is this guy? Because I always used to like how how Carl Sagan talked. Like he had this unique uh vocal pattern that I like. And same with Neil, like when he would he would deliver the information, I was just like, yo, this is incredible, dog. So it just it just reinvigorated my interest in stuff like this. And like, you know, now I'm a fan of his. So you know, I watch uh Star Talk with him and uh Chuck Knight. Chuck Knights, man. I love them together. And I'm always just super fascinated by what they're talking about.

Yeah, same man. It's uh it's it's wild. The the universe that we live in is wild, it's wild that we even exist. You know, we talk about you and I I feel like you and I are on the same page. We're both pretty certain that there is more life out there, which it has to be, but it is possible, like it is possible that there isn't. Like that is it is a pot. Like, I'm not saying that's likely, I'm not saying that's what I think, but it that is one of the possibilities. That's crazy, and that I mean that would be insane, yeah. That would almost be scary to me, yeah. If we were the like, I don't think that that's probably the most unlikely situation, but that like it is possible that we're the first ones to build telescopes or to like land on the moon or something like that. Yeah, um, like I don't really know. Um I don't think that that we are, but it we we might be. And wouldn't that be crazy if we were the smartest life forms in the universe? Like, that would be wild because that would be wild. We're not, I just don't feel like we're that all that to like the smartest in the universe.

Yeah, I'm just I'd be disappointed. I'd just be like, man, it's just us. Come on, man. And like it was like I was saying before, though, you know, life in the universe, it's gonna be just a planet full of animals, or but because it everything seems random and and just a roll of the dice that we that the the meteor came and struck and wiped out the dinosaurs, and you know, all these mass die-offs and extinctions, and like you know, it's all it's all a crapshoot. So it's like it has to be a crapshoot all over the universe, it's a bunch of different crapshoots. Uh-huh. And so, you know, when you say there is a possibility that it's just us, which is very plausible because our existence is a crapshoot, right?

Like you couldn't have predicted it when the first when you when you saw Earth first form, you couldn't have said, okay, in 3.5 billion years, there's gonna be human beings that have that have comedians and have headphones and TikTok and that sort of thing. You couldn't have guessed that. No, but I mean that's that is what ended up happening, yeah. So yeah, I mean it's it's it's wild. Um, it would be cool one day if we somehow were able to find out, you know, what I suspect will happen is that we will find signs of microbial life elsewhere in the solar system. Yeah, like I think we may find out that there was microorganisms on Mars in the past, or maybe one of the uh icy moons of Jupiter or Saturn, maybe like underneath the ice where there's liquid water, maybe there's something in there, like um, you know, little amoebas, or yeah, or maybe even like very simple animals or something like that. I think that would be crazy. And I suspect that we'll encounter something like that, maybe. Yeah, but it just seems so unlikely that we'll ever come into contact with like complex things that we could talk to and communicate with.

Yeah, that I don't see happening. I just I just can't see it. Uh I would love it if it did happen. And they came down here and was like, yo, man, the key is wormholes, y'all. Y'all don't know about the wormholes? Let me show you. Yeah, and then like, but like you said, like Mars is like suspect number one. Yeah, icy moons of Saturn is like because I I think that there are microbial life on those moons. Think so. I think so. And I think I like to think that Mars once held some type of life. I I would I would even I would even go as as far as to say Venus did too, before the greenhouse effect took over and just made the planet hell.

Yeah, I mean that's it seems like there used to be a lot of water on Venus, yeah. And so I would not be surprised at all if early Earth, Mars, and Venus all had very simple life at the same time. Like, I don't know that that's a fact, but I would not be surprised if we found out that that was the case. And if some if we do, if we are able to establish that one day, then I think it just kind of wipes off the even the small possibility that there's only intelligent, you know, advanced life or whatever on Earth. Because it's like if it's if if simple life is popping up in the same solar system, yeah, if you play this crap shoot out, even if it's like one in a trillion, you're gonna you're gonna win because the you know the universe is just so big and so vast.

Yeah, because that that that would be crazy if it was three planets just in our solar system that house life at one point in time and even now, and then you take all these galaxies, all these different solar systems, and just like, yeah, that happened here too, and over there, oh, and this too. And so, you know, they keep define, they keep finding these big planets where like yes, it's water, but it's huge, and like water worlds, yeah, yeah.

So it's uh I think that those are super fascinating, yeah. Because we think of the earth as having a lot of water, and it does because like 70 percent or something like that of the surface is covered in water, right? But that's only the surface, right? It's not actually that much if you compared it to the whole planet, yeah. But there's some of these water worlds, they seem like they have like 20 or 30 percent water, which is insane. You're talking about uh this is an ocean that would be like thousands of kilometers deep, where I think the deepest part of our ocean is maybe six or seven. Seven, maybe ten. I don't know the exact number. Right, right. A water world would be thousands of kilometers deep. And it's not clear if life could form on a planet like that, because we don't know how life forms. Like we don't know for sure. It may life may require a little bit of land. Like it seems like life formed in the shallow areas. Like we don't know for sure, but it seems like the shallow areas where the land is close uh to the water, so like not necessarily deep in the sea.

Um, if I had to, there's a few theories, but the one that um I think I favor is that just like in these shallow pools of water where you kind of get it dries out sometimes, and you it's by the shore, so you kind of wash up nutrients from the ocean, yeah. And then like the sunlight can hit it and like warm it up, and you just kind of create this soup that stuff happens in, right? If that's how life is is formed, then I don't know if a planet that has is completely covered in water could form life, could form that type, right, without land, and so you may have those water worlds that have thousands of kilometers of water and just nothing in it. That's crazy to think about, which is crazy to think about, or maybe there's maybe there is life on those on those uh worlds, and then that's crazy to try and hypothesize what type of living thing may live in those oceans, yeah.

Because you're talking about pressure. If if the pressure is crazy here, and we're not even a fraction that that deep of a planet like that, man. Yeah, the fact that they can survive that kind of pressure is just insane, and what they'll be looking like is probably terrifying, yeah.

Just like the deep sea, the stuff deep in the ocean on uh on earth. It's like, but there are things that can evolve to lit to live in that deep, deep pressure. Yeah, um, they usually can't live in the lower pressure. Like, what do they call it? The blobfish. Yeah, and every it looks hideous, but that's because they took it out the water. It like when it's when it's down under the the high pressure um deep parts of the ocean, it looks totally different, right?

Than it does when they when they take it out, which is kind of messed up, but yeah, and I marvel, I even marvel that like you know that they say that the core of the earth is hotter than the sun. The fact that we are standing and existing on something that's hotter than the sun, it's just underneath. You know what I'm saying? And I just always marvel at that too, and how how thick the crust is and how deep you gotta go. And you know, I seen some of your videos talking about there's a there's a a layer of what is it, liquid material, like around the core, yeah.

Yeah, it goes so it goes you know, like we got the hard crust, it's kind of cool, or yeah, it's it's cool relatively, and then as you go down further and further, it starts to get like what we say, what we call plastic, where it's not really a liquid, but it's not as it's kind of like silly putty. Then you go down further and it's it's liquid and it's like lava, and then you go down further, the pressure gets so high that it turns back into a solid. So we got a solid core with liquid around it, and then like this plastic mantle, and then the frozen crust, and yeah, it's like wild. And that may be what I mean, that's like important for tectonic activity. You could kind of think of the oat the the entire earth as this like sea of liquid rock, and the crust is this thing that kind of floats on top, yeah. And like sometimes the plates crash into each other, and you get these mountain ranges. Sometimes they like slide underneath and subduct, and uh that's like really important for recycling the carbon in the atmosphere, too. And so it's like all that there's all this complicated stuff going on that's important for life that we're honestly just beginning to understand, yeah, yeah, man.

And it's crazy too, like you know, the the randomness of the reason we're not blown away from the sun's radiation is the fact that we got that liquid core creating the magnetic field, and it's just like okay, everything's like everything's connected, it's all connected, bro.

And it's like the the fact that we have a spinning iron core and then like a lick a liquid iron mantle, and then the earth rotates, all of that like motion generates a magnetic field, which turns out to be perhaps essential. With that, maybe you we we you talked about Venus and we talked about Mars. Neither one of those planets have a strong magnetic field, so you know we could start to build it's not conclusive, but we can start to build a case that you need that, yeah, uh have you know a sustainable habitable planet, which is wild because it's like that's another thing that's just random. Do you get it or not? Venus is about the same size as Earth. So like why doesn't it why doesn't it have a magnetic field?

Because it's just moving too slow. And why is it moving slow? Like, why did it slow down to where you know what I'm saying? And then Mars looks like the planet that was just stripped of Mars looks like what what the effect would be if you just slowed down, and then the sun kind of stripped everything off, but then there's no uh runaway greenhouse effect, making it hell hell, but like but everything has been stripped away, so now it's just yeah, the atmosphere is so depleted that if you opened up a bottle of water, it would just like instantly evaporate and freeze because the pressure is so low.

That's crazy, yeah. But then and then you got you know, you got like the tech the tech CEOs and Elon Musk and those guys talking about going to live on Mars. Yeah, like why would you want to go live on Mars? It's worse than the worst place on Earth by far.

Like, I feel like we don't need to go there and actually you ever check out any of the footage from the rovers that we got on Mars? Yeah, it's it's cool to see that footage, but then it's like it's all it's just the red desert, like the whole thing is just red rocks and desert, nothing's there, man. Yeah, there's like there's nothing there, and it's uh it's it's super dusty, yeah.

Crazy. And the but the uh part about Mars is just that big mountain they got.

Olympus Mons. Yeah, that's the big interesting because that tells us that at one point Mars was geologically active because they produced a ball, it produced a volcano, yeah. You know, it had like lava that was that was coming up, so that's interesting. That may be around the time that there was like simple life there. Okay, maybe, maybe not. Perhaps though this mons, yeah, and it's uh part, I think part of the reason that it was able to get so big is because I think for two things. One, I don't think Mars ever had plate tectonics like the Earth does, so like the surface didn't change a lot, so the the volcano could keep growing, and it also has lower gravity because it's so so much smaller, so it's like easier for rocks to get taller without being uh knocked over or like whittled down. Okay, I didn't even thought about that. I know, right? It's interesting, yeah. And these are just you know, the stuff we're talking about, these icy moons, Mars, Venus. This is just the closest objects to us, right? That we can study, but that and there's like trillions of other planets, hundreds of billions maybe in our galaxy, and then all the other galaxies. And it's I just think it's exciting to think about those possibilities. I low-key wish I was alive further in the future when I don't know, if there is a possibility to develop some sort of technology to learn more about this stuff, right? Or, you know, you mentioned wormholes, like if those are possible, yeah, that would be crazy to be a part of the civilization that figured out how they worked.

Oh man, if you figure out how they work, then then the possibility is endless. Now we're in that Star Wars, you know, galaxy, guardians of the galaxy. We can just pull up on the planet and be like, What's up, y'all? You know, and because that that's the only way I can see space travel at a real level being able to be done.

You ever wanted to go to space? You know what? I'm back and forth on me going. Yeah because it took me long enough to get on the airplane. Now, you know, I think about like, you know, the Artemis mission that was recent. I think about like the amount of courage it takes to get up in that rocket, that shuttle, to take off anything could go wrong. And now, mind you, we fly all the time, anything could go wrong, we fly a regular flight, but you just think about the vulnerability, and then you're going up to a super hostile environment where you know, one false move, you're done. And but then I think again, like, what is it like to be able to look back at Earth? Yeah, and then look at the moon, and then circle the moon and go behind it, and just you're looking at this with your own eyeball. And I'm just I just marvel every time, like, man, I would love to be able to just see Jupiter face to face or like Saturn. Saturn's my favorite planet, just to be able to look at it, just be like, Saturn right there.

Yeah, I agree. I agree. And the it's they look so whenever you see the images that they get from like the spacecraft that's out there orbiting, yeah, it just looks it looks, it just looks it's hard to explain. It's like it looks beautiful, it looks perfect. It's like this, and you have to realize like how big Saturn is. It's like you could fit, I forget what the number is, like 700 Earths. If you open up the top of Saturn and started pouring in Earths, you could fit like 700 of them in there. That's insane. And then the fact that the rings are most likely a moon that got a little too close, and then Saturn just kind of like shredded it. Yeah, that's also crazy. And so you think one thing I think that's cool to think about is that if that's how planets get rings, and eventually the rings go away, right? Probably every planet has a phase where they have some sort of rings. Um, I think that there's actually evidence that the Earth used to have rings. That makes sense.

If if the theory is true that we got the moon from a collision early on, then we had to have had like a little ring type of situation, and you know, everything eventually coalesced into the moon we know now. But yeah, there had to be like that process of just like the rings just moving around and the dust clearing, and then a lot of stuff coming back down to Earth and pummeling the planet with you know impact.

Yeah, and you know, another another interesting thing about the moon specifically is that it seems like the moon, you know, we have you know, the earth has like a little tilt, it has this like 23 and a half degree tilt while it spins, but it it sort of like wobbles a little bit as it spins over, and I think every 26,000 years it does one of these wobbles, uh-huh. And the moon helps to keep that steady. Uh without the moon, there's a chance that those that that tilt, that that wobble would be a little bit more chaotic. And so, you know, there's somehow there's like a hypothesis that having a large moon helps to stabilize the climate on Earth. Okay, so that we that collision that was catastrophic for whatever planet hit us may have ended up being uh again another thing that helped us be able to have life one day.

Imagine a big um, like an asteroid, a meet a meteor, slammed into the ocean. Right, just created this enormous tidal wave. Because that's something that I feel like you can't, you just can't survive that, you know, this big wave that comes crashing over an earthquake. I feel like we have earthquakes in SoCal, and it's not that it's not that bad. It's not a terrifying one where the earth like splits open and you fall into it. Right. Um, I'm from the Midwest. I guess a tornado could be scary, but I think the one that scares me the most is tsunami. What's your answer?

My mine is I've seen a tornado in New Mexico. I've seen one with my own eyes, and they're terrifying because you can actually see an actual entity. There it is, right there.

You can look at it, tsunami's watch it form, yeah. You watch it like touchdown, and then it just goes and you don't know where it's going, it just it has like a mind of its own.

There's no help, man. There's no help, it's none of that, man. This is all an illusion. Yeah, if that building comes down, we're done. Um but for me, the the one that scares me the most is actually volcano. Because if if if you have a volcano powerful enough to fully detonate, let's say Yellowstone. Let's say if Yellowstone was just the initial explosion is gonna be crazy, and then whatever it keeps ejecting has the power to affect the whole planet.

Yeah, block out the sun, yeah, change the uh create like acid rain everywhere, probably kill a bunch of crops. Um I think one of the it is interesting that you say this, one of the mass extinctions. I want to say it's the the Permian mass extinction, was which was one of the worst ones. Um had I think that there's a there's like several things that happened at once. And I think one of the things that happened was like a super volcano eruption that happened to erupt in this place in Siberia where there was like huge forests worth of coal, of trees that had died and turned to coal that was like burning for however many years, and that pollute that like wrecked the entire ecosystem for the same reason that you're saying you're polluting the air, you're blocking out the sun, it's getting in the water, yeah. Something like 80 or 90 percent of the life on Earth, which is crazy, which is crazy, right? Yeah, it's like that that could have done it, it could have killed everything, right? If it was a little bit worse, it could have wiped out everything, and nobody and the earth is just sterile now, right? But it's killed like the exact right animals that new animal modes could come, and yeah, eventually like the dinosaurs take over, and they get wiped out, and then a few little animals survived. And you know, some people say that we're in the sixth math ex mass extinction right now. I've heard that, yeah, and it's us that's doing it.

Yeah, that's my biggest fear on this planet is us. Yeah, we all we often talk about like you know, the earthquake earthquakes have been happening uh frequently lately, which is scary, and like you know, volcanoes always bubbling and brewing, but honestly, humans scare me the most because they keep doing the stuff that's detrimental, and yeah, you know and we know it though, we know it's bad.

We are gonna be our own downfall. That's what I fully believe. I I don't believe that we're gonna get hit by an asteroid in the near future. I really feel like we are gonna be responsible for our own divine, whether it be a nuclear war or just us messing up the environment.

Yeah, man, there's a long history of humans doing that. Um, you know, one of the one of the things if you if you look into archaeology and and paleontology is that as humans, as our ancestors spread across the world, like animals start disappearing from those locations. Um and it's like they have sticks and stones and fire, so they can they can do damage on a small scale, right? But but right now with the technology we have, we can do damage on a global scale, for sure, and so in some sense, we're just doing what humans have done for a long time, and that's not what every all humans have done, right? Lots of people learned how to uh live uh symbiotically with the environment, right? And like take care of their environment and appreciate it. But I'm with you. I think that if there's a threat, I think we could figure out how to deflect an asteroid, I think we can figure out how to like detect the early signs of a volcano, right? But I I think that the biggest challenge is ourselves. I agree with that thousand percent, man. I agree with that. All right, man. We got we just uh came up on an hour.
