There’s a specific kind of summer magic that makes you want to believe the most complicated love story is the truest one. Salt air, sunburned shoulders, a crush that makes your heart skip and suddenly the broody guy in a dark sweater feels like destiny. We’re here to challenge that.

We’re Lauren and Alex, and we’re launching Team Jere, a deep-dive rewatch of all three seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty with one big question driving every conversation: why do we keep rooting for the person who makes us cry when we could choose the person who makes us feel safe and fully ourselves? Lauren comes in unapologetically Team Jeremiah, while Alex brings the millennial tendency to fall for the tortured hero trope and a willingness to be convinced. Together, we’re breaking down what the show gets right about first love, what it glamorizes about emotional chaos, and what healthy romance actually looks like in modern dating.

Along the way, we’ll dig into the show’s deeper themes, including grief, growing pains, messy firsts, and the way pop culture shapes our expectations of love. We’ll also talk adaptation choices and what changes between the books and the series mean for how characters get framed, including the shade Jeremiah catches on screen versus on the page. And we’ll keep coming back to the debate at the heart of Cousins Beach: is it better to chase fireworks, or choose the person who shows up?

We kick things off July 4th and spend the entire summer breaking down Season 1 episode by episode. Subscribe now, share the show with a friend who loves a hot take, and leave a review to help more fans find us. Then tell us where you stand: are you Team Jeremiah or still defending the broody guy?

Summer Magic And First Crushes

SPEAKER_00

You know, there is a specific kind of magic that only happens in the summer. The smell of salt air, the sound of screaming doors, slamming, lemonade, ice cream, and as I like to say, sunburned shoulders. And what is summer without a dizzy and crush that makes your heart skip?

SPEAKER_01

So true. And for some people, that magic usually involves a broody guy in a dark sweater staring out at the ocean.

Stop Chasing The Broody Guy

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, Alex. Somehow everyone thinks that the complicated one, the messy one, the one who makes you always guess, that's the one. But I'm here as your Gen X guide to tell you life is far too short for a guy who makes you cry in the hallway.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and see, me as a millennial, I've been raised on the tortured hero trope, but you're on a mission to change my mind, yes?

SPEAKER_00

I am on a mission to change the world's mind, Alex. Very

Welcome To Team Jair Podcast

SPEAKER_00

important. And that's why we want to welcome you all to Team Jair. This is the podcast where we are doing a deep dive rewatch of all three seasons of The Summer I Turn Pretty. I'm your host, Lauren, and I'm firmly, unapologetically and logically, Team Jeremiah.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm Alex. I'm here to represent the millennial side of things, to revisit the drama of Cousins Beach, and to see if my friend here can actually convince me that Jeremiah Fisher is the obvious choice for Belly.

SPEAKER_00

Well, we don't like to tell a woman what to do. We're all about a woman's right to choose here. And but I do believe that Jeremiah

Fireworks Versus Showing Up

SPEAKER_00

is the right choice, Alex. We're going to talk about why the guy who makes you smile, be yourself, and you know, kind of like doesn't make you cry every minute, is the one you want to keep. We're breaking down the unrealistic expectations we see on screen versus the reality of modern-day dating, and we're doing it through one of our favorite shows.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we'll be looking at the themes of the show, the grief, the growing pains, and the messy firsts, and seeing how they align with young people and what we're actually facing today in 2026. Is it better to have the fireworks or the person who actually shows up for you?

SPEAKER_00

Well, spoiler alert, it's both. And I'm going to convince you all that Jeremiah is the fireworks and the foundation. And not only that, hopefully, not only that, we're going to talk about imperfect love and how other TV shows and culture guide our notions about romance and what's reality and what is fiction. I'm looking at you, Sex in the City.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm here for it, and just as excited to be going on this journey back to Cousins this summer. I'm excited to go back and binge the early seasons again and look back at how it all started. Have you watched it recently? Because it's been a minute for me.

SPEAKER_00

Well, when I first uh got through the season, like around episode eight, I went back and rewatched it immediately, then closed out and then read the books, then rewatched

Rewatch Plans And Book Differences

SPEAKER_00

it again. So that's where this idea came from because I was like, and that's one thing we are gonna talk about. We are gonna talk about some of the differences between the books and the movie and how Jeremiah catches a little more shade in the movie than he does in the books. But you know, I think I think just getting back into this and getting back into the sweet, sweet nature of the show is gonna be great for some summer. So come with us back to cousins and relive the early days of young romance while we recruit all of you, our listeners, and Alex and the show's fans to Teen Chair.

SPEAKER_01

We're kicking things off on July 4th. We'll be spending the entire summer breaking down season one episode by episode.

SPEAKER_00

And should we tell them about Substack and

Where To Follow And Launch Details

SPEAKER_00

our Instagram?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, tell them about Substack.

SPEAKER_00

Well, so we've decided to also uh live on in Substack and also start our Instagram. So you can find us on Team Jair Pod in both places. We'll be available to talk to you, to respond, to share updates about what's going on with Gavin Cassiano and the cast. And you know what? They're actually filming right now. So if we time this perfectly, we're gonna wrap up all three seasons just in time for the movie to come out, which I think maybe next summer, but I don't know for sure. So uh what we want you to do for now is grab your beach towel, leave the brooding at the door, and get ready to join the right team. We're launching on July 4th. So you've got time to subscribe, to check us out on Substack while we work our way through this messy podcast producing and learn a lot. And um, and then you know, meet us back here on July 4th.

SPEAKER_01

Very excited. Can't wait to get into the conversation with you all.

SPEAKER_00

Awesome. We'll see you at the beach.

SPEAKER_01

Bye.
