We go from summer travel chaos and zoo elephant stories to a deep recap of “Summer Dress,” where Belly’s glow-up collides with debutante pressure and a love triangle that starts to sharpen. We track who supports Belly’s growth, who tries to control the narrative, and why the red jeep moment changes the vibe of her first real date.

Moving To New York Updates

SPEAKER_01

How are you?

SPEAKER_03

I'm so good. I'm so good. I am um it's Friday. It's um I'm uh You're moving. I'm moving. I'm going to New York next week. I'm gonna be there when the Knicks are there, which I know that doesn't time well with this, you know, with what I'm telling about the podcast, but um excited to be. My hotel room in New York was like already expensive for four nights, like $2.50 a night. Okay. Um like coming in just under that after tax was like right over a thousand. And then I looked the other day because I was like, maybe I want to change hotels or look and see if anything went down because it's getting closer, you know? And everything's like double. So I'm glad I I booked like the day before the next one.

SPEAKER_01

So oh wow, that really timed out perfectly.

SPEAKER_03

Well, how is um in your other podcast world? How is um gay pride and trying?

SPEAKER_01

Gay gay and trying, Pride Month is upon us, so it's going well. Actually, we got uh Spotify gave us a placement in their top video podcast of the week yesterday. Um congratulations! Thank you. And we booked some really fun guests. Our first episode with a guest came out yesterday, and then on Spotify, on yes, but everywhere. Spotify, YouTube, the show airs on YouTube, but then audible like audio is on Spotify. Actually, videos on Spotify too. But oh, that's true. We have some really big um ours will also be video on Spotify. Okay. Um we have you're like, great, whatever, how wherever it is. Um but no, it's gonna it shakes.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I'm just like, did you notice that I've sprayed my hair? Just want to remind you people.

SPEAKER_01

No, but it's really good. It's um I like that we were doing it all prep work so that June isn't intense because they're sending us to like a bunch of places to do some like red carpet correspondence work and whatnot. But um

Elephants Lions And Gibbon Love Calls

SPEAKER_01

I'm excited.

SPEAKER_03

That's fun.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I think last we spoke, you were going to see some elephants. How was that? Did it work? Did it work out?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I was literally like running out the door to see some elephants. Um, and I did see some elephants. We we met um at the zoo by my friend's house in Birmingham. Literally, her house, and you know this, yeah, house backs up to the zoo. That's so good. And so they've got a really chatty lion, which I always like to go visit him because we got there while yeah, he'd like oh, he like hoofs all day, and you could hear it at my friend's house. Like you can hear it inside her house. But and then and then you can hear him do his like I mean, he roars a lot, but his feeding time is 7 a.m. and 4 a.m. So if I'm out walking the dogs at 7 a.m., you get the full show. And then there was also um two little gibbons, which I thought was birds, but it's actually a monkey. So this is this is like I don't know if you watch shows like Secrets of the Zoo, but I'd I've watched every single episode and every single season. Okay, good. So maybe we'll do a rewatch of Secrets of the Zoo after this because it's so good. And my friend was with me, and I'm like, well, I know this about this because but um but the gibbons, one of the gibbons had lost its mate, and so he was solo for a while, and then the gibbons ha got to um basically after two years, they finally found a mate. So the zookeeper's telling me this whole this whole story. But at her house now, and I stay at this friend's house a good bit, yeah, um, you can hear the gibbons doing their like mating call to each other. It sounds like kind of like a coyote call that doesn't end, meets a meets like a turkey. Um they're in quarantine, like kind of right in the backyard of this property where my friend is. So um I got to learn about that and we got to feed um the elephant, and the elephant was like, We're feeding the elephant celery, and the elephant won wanted like he wouldn't even take one, he wanted me to stick celery, like literally up both of his nostrils.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And he wouldn't wait for just the one. He needed to, I mean, he was like, Come on, come on, you know, where's the second one?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So we didn't get to pet the elephants or anything, but we did definitely got to feed them and and watch them train, and it was very cool and see the barn and everything.

SPEAKER_01

So oh, that's cool. And that's what you're doing for your birthday, right?

SPEAKER_03

And that's what I'm doing for my birthday. I think it may be a little bit more exclusive, but probably it's the exact same thing that I paid twice the money for.

unknown

That's okay.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but yeah, it's uh and that and we're gonna do some draft feeding. We're gonna meet the keeper of the lion. The lion's name is Josh.

SPEAKER_01

Josh the Lion.

SPEAKER_03

And then I I am announcing, and maybe maybe some of our podcast folks want to join. I'll just go ahead and open this up or the our our um Substack community. But for my actual birthday, which is July 15th, so it's just coming around next week. Um, the I'm doing a virtual bingo, and we're gonna raise money for the Birmingham Zoo because they have this you know great elephant program where they're studying and sharing information through across a bunch of zoos. They are like one of the few zoos that have a bachelor herd, and they're training these, they're training the younger elephants to go and lead their own bachelor herd because it's really easy for zoos to maintain a bachelor herd versus moms and boys because the boys get older and then they're kind of like, what do we do with the with the men once they're interesting, yeah. So this is like you know, so there's a lot of studying around bachelor herds and elephant communication at this zoo, and so we're doing uh virtual bingo on July 15th at 6 30 for my birthday. Of course, you'll be there hopefully.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that'll be so funny.

SPEAKER_03

But I will put the link out and anybody can join um and uh you know, just donate ten dollars and ten dollars a bingo card. So if you want to get a bunch of bingo cards and um we'll have some fun prizes from the zoo and you know, wherever else we can scrounge up some goodies.

SPEAKER_01

I love that. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, so many people are so spread out now, and I just figure it's a fun way. Um, and then we're gonna

Lakes Beaches Sharks And Alligator PSA

SPEAKER_03

go the you know, after that we'll go physically meet the elephants and present them with a check. So that will be fun.

SPEAKER_01

That's really cool. Love that.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Well, um, are you excited to be post-July 4th? Did you have a good holiday?

SPEAKER_01

An amazing holiday. Went to Big Bear so in the mountains and enjoyed yeah, enjoyed the uh lake. I grew up going to the lake, so you know I lake I love a lake, love a lake so much.

SPEAKER_03

I like a lake if I can wear like lake shoes. I don't like to touch the bottom of the lake.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, that is true. I don't I haven't touched the bottom of the lake in a few years, but I do love swimming in the line.

SPEAKER_03

But the lakes where I was growing up, they were always like mush and you just go way down into them and kind of disappear. And so yeah, I I I mean, I don't really honestly love going to the ocean that much either, if I'm being honest.

SPEAKER_01

I'm terrified of the ocean.

SPEAKER_03

By an ocean, like being near an ocean. Uh um, but yeah, um the I used to ride waves for you know 17 hours of the day when I was a kid and now Wait, really? Oh, when I was when I was a kid, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You would ride the waves. Oh, wow. You would just be in the water. Oh wow. Just be in the water, come back. Always terrified of the ocean.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, pruned up.

SPEAKER_01

Wow.

SPEAKER_03

Um, well, I had our annual 43rd annual week of at Frip Island, and and so this is a great story about being at the beach when you're a kid and just some of those memories. So um it's in Frip Island is in South Carolina, so it reminds me a lot of um Cousins because Cousins is shot in Wilmington, which is right off the road. And so, and it's very tidal, you know, so it's like the tide can be 20 yards or 20 feet different, you know, morning to evening, and sometimes even more. I mean, there's just like whole sections of the beach that get eaten up by the tides. And so there it was a great place for catching sand dollars. And so when you were little, and I learned this not too long ago, when we were little, we would like let's say old enough to stand up in the be in the ocean, so like pre-teen, early teens, like but not old enough to drive where you could, you know, go and and entertain yourself. Yeah, we would get in the ocean and we would find sand dollars and we'd come back with like buckets full of sand dollars. Wow, and we would bleach them. It was like this whole production, it was like a whole thing, and we'd take them down to the general store and ask them to buy them from us so that they could resell them. And little did we know, my sweet precious father would go to the general store ahead of us and say, My kids are gonna come in, they've been working really hard and and give them $20 to give us for the sand dollars.

SPEAKER_01

That is the coolest dad ever. Wow.

SPEAKER_03

Isn't that great?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's really great. Um were these waters you were in, like, were you ever scared of sharks? Was this a thing? Did you have to deal with that?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we saw them a handful of times, yeah. Um but yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I guess if you grow up in it, you're kind of used to it. Like you just know what to look for and we didn't for a long time.

SPEAKER_03

Also, this island has a lot of alligators. What? Like a lot of alligators.

SPEAKER_01

Somehow worse than sharks in my life.

SPEAKER_03

Like you eat dinner, and then you're like, oh, let's go see which alligators are out tonight. And they're always in kind of like predictable places, a golf course. There's a couple, there's like a handful of places that there are. I mean, there's signs everywhere. We practiced running zigzag because you, you know, alligator turn. So that's how you get away. They can run 30 miles an hour, but they can't turn, so you run in zigzags. So anyway, um, my PSA for anybody going into their alligators. Um, run in zigzags.

SPEAKER_01

That's I didn't know, I honestly didn't know that, so it's good to know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, if you run into any alligators at Big Bear.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that would be wild.

SPEAKER_03

I love it. Well, should we go ahead and start the

Welcome And Summer Dress Overview

SPEAKER_03

show?

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to the Team Jair podcast, episode two.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

This week we're diving into season one, episode two, summer dress. I'm one of your co-hosts, Alex Hinsky.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm Lauren Doyle, and we are so excited to be here with you today. We hope you're enjoying your summer as much as we are. We were just gushing about our holidays. And um, Alex is went up to state parks and had or national parks and had a big old time. Now, I want to know, did you camp?

SPEAKER_01

Cabin. Oh, I I like to I'm a glamper myself. Okay. Yes. I like a hot tub and a shower and a working bathroom.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I was gonna have a new level of respect, but also realize we're not the same if you said you like camp out in tents. Because I can't no, I can't.

SPEAKER_01

No, I have done it, but no. If there's an app option for a cabin, I I just like a bathroom. You know, I like to be able to shower and use the bathroom, use a toilet.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, yep. Not get dirt in your face.

SPEAKER_01

Correct. But I love the woods. So put a cabin in the woods and I'm good.

SPEAKER_03

Ah, wonderful. Well, I hope it was a great time. Um, and you're back rested and excited to dig into episode two. Yes. Um, like you said, summer dress. I think this one can kind of broke be broken into three. We've got a lot to talk about in this episode. Um, you know, kind of the opening, the debutante of it all, and you know, and and sort of like the opening. We see a lot of character development in that first scene in the kitchen. So I do want to talk about that all the way to the boys, you know, checking out the boys at the um at the Lifeguard stand and you know, getting to the debutante lunch, the debutante lunch in itself. Yeah. Um, and Cam's back for date number one.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Um, lots of spoilers in this episode, of course, and then kind of the aftermath of the date between um and then also um Taylor shows up, right? Or knows that's no, not yet. Not yet.

SPEAKER_01

Not yet.

SPEAKER_03

So um, sorry, I I I skimmed ahead a little bit because you know you get into it and you're like, oh, keep on moving.

SPEAKER_00

So right, right, right, right.

SPEAKER_03

Um, you know, so kind of the aftermath of um uh I think the date and then the aftermath of the date is kind of important.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, it is. There's I would yeah, right off the bat in this episode, it's like they unpack a lot. You get a lot of a lot of character development in that you know, 43-minute episode or whatever it is. Yep a lot. And um, and in my opinion, this is the episode where those that are more on the team Conrad side kind of get to see more of why he is the tortured soul that he is, and that's I don't know. This is where I my empathy starts to unlock when I uh was watching this episode.

SPEAKER_03

Um alright, I need you to just go ahead and let's just dive in because I I want to know I would like that is too much of a cliffhanger to let last any longer. Tell me why, like, where's the tortured whole part in here?

SPEAKER_01

Well, this is this is the episode where uh you realize that Conrad knows more about what's going on with his mom than probably everyone else, or he knows more about her, you know, the underlying what's going on with mom. Um and it's and I think the actor plays it. So this is the one where she paints him, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. So that scene, you can s I I connected to this scene in a lot in a lot of ways because it was like this this is a man who is heartbroken over what's going on with his mom. He does not know how to express it. He is a tortured soul who does not know how to express his emotions, but you can see that he feels very deeply. And he will do anything for her. Like she encourages him to get a job and he just says, Okay, okay. And she's like, Oh, that was but he's like, Yeah, what literally anything she wants is kind of how I interpreted that one.

SPEAKER_03

Um I think I don't know that I captured just looking forward and again, uh, you know, just what's going on with her. Um, but I th I did have this sense of like, wow, she del did really raise two good boys, you know, like there's there's a lot of love for her, yeah, yeah. And there's a lot of respect for that. They both really respect their mom and you know care deeply for her and um you know, kind of want want her love and attention, but don't they're not starving for neither of them are starving for it.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think. I mean, she doesn't seem to play favorites. No belly is the only one she really plays favorites.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, totally. The daughter she never had.

SPEAKER_03

Um, absolutely. So um yeah, so so basically kind of skipping ahead to the point that was the I think that there's uh in this episode, especially, there's little moments that could just be missed. Even like when Laurel's trying to write her book, and you know, there's just like this moment, and I did have a couple of moments where I'm like, why is that important? Like the paint, like why is she painting? Because of course we don't know what's going on, right? Like, why why is she painting these kids now? I'm like, oh, that's interesting. She must be like these, and also like the you know, like Laurel and Susanna, I'm like, oh, they're they're kind of both these like creative souls that have come together. Um there's also a point, and you know, in the first episode, I was talking about how unreliable of a narrator Belly is, and there's the scene at the book party where we're all over the place today.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes, no, you're right. Yes, I know what you're about to say. You're all you're so right.

SPEAKER_03

Even Clastique relates with me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's so funny. I forgot about that.

SPEAKER_03

Um well, and and I think, you know, just kind of going back to the beginning of the, you know, sort of like step by step,

Conrad And Change The Border Bullies

SPEAKER_03

um one of the things I love just first thing in the morning, it opens up in the kitchen and everybody's in the kitchen. Conrad's like hungover and in a bad mood, so kind of perpetuating where we came to on our point system from last week where you know Conrad sort of lost out because he was a little bit of a jerk. He's continuing to be a little bit of a jerk. And then we get to see T Jeremiah's first stab at his culinary.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. Yeah, yes, yes.

SPEAKER_03

You know, and and there's this theme that goes throughout the movie where he's just sort of like constantly, you know, making sure everybody's got food. He's got Conrad's special like hangover drink, and he's just like, whatever, take care of yourself. The boys are headed out to work. And I mean, I think if you're looking at this objectively, Jeremiah didn't drink, drew everybody home, and is making everybody breakfast the next morning, hooks belly up with her with her, you know, whatever, Cheerios or something.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then um Conrad's like on the couch complaining, kind of being a little bit of a little bit jerkish. And um jerkish, yeah. I I mean he's jerkish a lot in these first couple episodes. Yeah, yeah. He's like dealing whatever with whatever he's dealing with. And um, and you know, the the the younger boys are being very much their age, you know, just very acting very like inappropriate and and very much their age in my opinion. Yes. Um but uh I think you know, I thought it was funny. Like here, this is the first time we get to see Jeremiah cooking because he he loves to do it, and you know, we see we know that he kind of that kind of carries through. And he is um, you know, he's the one that's feeding everybody, he's the one that's like nourishing everybody, and he's got this like nourishing side. Um, and then Susanna comes down and she's so excited because she got the note about the debutante ball.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. That is a very exciting moment. Uh and I want to say, like, I think I said this last time we talked too, that I think it's really cool that like Belly is kind of just down for whatever. You can tell that she's doing it more out of um sure, because mom is excited more than she more than maybe she is. Um, but you can tell she's curious too. She's also like, what is this, what is this gonna entail? Like, what does this mean for me doing this?

SPEAKER_03

Well, I think her conversation with Cam, and I and personally, I'm you I'm learning a lot about neutrality. Just this is just sort of a personal journey that I'm on. It's like her conversation with Cam was kind of like, I don't know, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg came last year, or you know, like or Elizabeth Warren or something came last year to the ball and you know, like spoke at it or something. And the girls do a lot of charity stuff, and so I think she went from like, oh, I don't know, and the boys being like, oh, I don't know. And then um, you know, and then and Conrad even in the moment is like, I'm not going, you know, I'm not gonna be the host. I did it last year with Nicole, and Jeremiah's like, I sore off balls, I don't do it. And she's like, Yeah, thanks guys. And um, but but I think she hit a place of neutrality where like if I don't care either way, I might as well make somebody happy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's a great excellent idea.

SPEAKER_03

And I think that's an interesting lesson. It's something that I'm just learning in some decisions I've made around moving. That like, you know, if I care too much, then I'm setting myself up for letdown. But if I'm kind of like neutral about something, then I can move through it. And if it's not perfect, then that's fine because it wasn't meant to be perfect versus like setting myself up for disappointment. And so I think that that's where she she got enough of a um instigation through Cam to be like, hmm, maybe maybe it's not so bad. And and you maybe kind of like Cam even more because he's he just didn't put labels on things.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and then you where you have um, and he only knows her as this like really super smart, nerdy, like Greek actor, you know, not Greek actor, but like actor in this like Greek play.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so he knows the like not beach belly. What little bit Cam knows her, he knows the not beach belly, and or and then um Conrad is laying on the couch in his like hungover stupor, and he's like, It's not you. You're it's not, you know, like he's he this there's this constant theme of him defining who she is, correct? Especially in this, you know, like I liked you better with glasses. Like he needs for him to be the person he is, he needs her to stay.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes. I would also argue that he is, we know what he's going through internally because of what he knows about his mother, and I believe too, there's a big side of him that's like trying to hold on to anything that he doesn't he's uh too much change is happening, preparing himself for whatever's going on with his mom. But if belly can stay the same, if the summers are the same how they've always been, and the people are the same, that that is there's a lot of security in that. And I think that's also a part of it. I you're absolutely I agree with you. I think everything you said is correct, but I do think that there's a part of the the writing that that plays like Conrad is grasping for anything normal. Yes, something that is grounding and Belly growing up and changing, and his mom going through what she's going through. It's just so too much is changing. Well, is everything gonna change? It's it's destabilizing.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. It kind of reminds me, and he's and he's going to college and he gave up football and you know all the things, and the you know, I don't know if he knows that his you know his parents are obviously not in great shape because he's not there and he's gonna be gone for most of the summer. Um, but he it uh there's this book I've read called The Dream Giver, which I recommend to everybody. It's like a really short book, it's kind of like a fable. So it's maybe 90, 50, 90 pages, but you could read it in an afternoon.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_03

And the story is about nobody who lives in the lore land of ordinary, and he wants to be somebody, but in order to be somebody, he asked has to leave the land of ordinary. And so it's kind of like a fable about making a decision to go to the next thing in your life. And I go back to this book over and over and over again. I've like given it away ten times. I I probably need to order a new copy because I keep on giving it away. Um, but it is it it really is about like the people when when you are transitioning to something new, if you're moving forward in something, everybody that is around you is it changes something for them. The people that are closest to you.

SPEAKER_02

Totally.

SPEAKER_03

And you know, and it uses the actual like analogy of crossing over into the land of somebody's from the land of ordinary or the land of like dreams versus the land of nobody. And there's border bullies, there's border buddies, and there's border um cheerleaders or something. There's like sort of like these three different characters that show up when you go through change. One or you know, or when you're evolving. One is a border buddy that's like awesome. I will cross with you, I will, I will show you the way. I've actually been before and I'll show you the way. One is this like, hey, good on you. I'm standing right here cheering for you. Let me know how it goes. If you need anything, give me a call. And then there's border bullies, and border bullies are kind of the people. That are like, don't change, don't do this, you don't know what's out there. Surely it's not gonna work. And I remember when I told my dad that I was gonna leave Alabama and move to New York, and he was like, Oh, I mean, he was kind of a border bully, and had I not read that book, it probably wouldn't have helped me like approach it with grace. But he was just like, Well, I mean, I don't want you to go up there and have to like wait tables or anything. And you know, so it was kind of this like, oh, you're you're you can't make it up there, and so I want you to stay here where it's safe for me and safe for you. Yeah, but really it's where it's safe for me, and so I you know, there's a little bit of that going on with Conrad. He's like, you know, he doesn't he doesn't want to give her the room to like grow, and he doesn't, it's more about him, to your point, than and him just sort of like holding on where Jeremiah's like the border buddy, or at least the you know oh he is for sure. And and he's like, Come on, like you're growing, you know, like even when he in probably a good transition to the debutante ball. I mean, of course, the dress scene was great, and there's this whole dress scene, you know, which we can talk about, and of course that's gonna come up again. But um, you know, she walks into the debutante ball and he's like, Let me take you, you know, shirtless and all. So what do you think about that? Not to you know, waylay into one of my favorite books.

SPEAKER_01

The of everything you just you just talked about? Yeah, I think that that's that is I love that. I also think that I haven't read this book, but now I'm very curious too. But I think that it also you can be your own. It sounds like I mean, I've experienced definitely being my own border bully, like we can definitely do that to ourselves, and I I guess it feels as though in in that context, Conrad is uh absolutely doing that to himself as well. Um but that totally makes sense. That's that is that's really insightful, and that's a hundred percent how he is acting in this in this scenario. I think the the thing that is and it's written by Bruce Wilkinson. Say that again, say that name again.

SPEAKER_03

The book is called The Dream Giver. The dream giver by Bruce Wilkins Wilkinson.

SPEAKER_01

We'll put it in the show notes, yes, for sure. Um Belly also, I think, like another thing that kind of stands out in this episode to me is like she's she's good at standing her ground. Like she has this intense crush on him, but she is not like she doesn't become like a weak person around him, which I really love that they she's written that way. Um, which I think is really important, especially she's the narrator, correct? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's right, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but yeah, it is it's a hundred percent that that tracks with us.

SPEAKER_03

But she does, yeah, she definitely pushes back on them, and it's funny because she's so close to Susanna, and it's like they have the same, I mean, they love Laurel, but they have the same respect for Belly in a lot of ways that they do for their own mother.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And um, you know, and it's again, it's like, wow, you raise these boys, these fictional mom raised these fictional boys really well.

SPEAKER_01

Really well, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, you know, or at least that's how the you know, how the narrator and writer saw them,

Debutante Lunch Social Minefield

SPEAKER_03

um, and how the characters are are playing it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, so we get to the debutante luncheon.

SPEAKER_01

The luncheon, yes.

SPEAKER_03

What a calamity.

SPEAKER_01

So much, so much going on in that scene.

SPEAKER_03

She walks in and sees the girl that Conrad was kissing the night before. And I mean, I felt it in my body. I'm like, oh god, I've been here in those situations where like a guy you like or a guy maybe you dated for a minute is now dating someone else, and you have to be in like a social setting with them and be, you know, have all your P's and Q's.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and I and I do love Jeremiah just walking her up there shirtless and I know, yeah. Like probably barefoot, and he's just like, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

You know, he calls the woman by her first name. Yeah, I think he's Cam's mom.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and you know, and there's it's who is his boss, right? Who's also his boss?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I've you know, I mean, I'm guessing all that's fine. She didn't seem to be too bothered by it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But um, did you notice what he says when he introduces her?

SPEAKER_01

Remind me. Wait, oh yeah, what does he say?

SPEAKER_03

He says, Oh, this is Belly. I mean, Isabel Conklin, the woman my mom told you about, my future wife. So it's the first time that there's this like light nod to, oh, maybe she could be with me. Like he's you know, he's at least thought about it, like it's been in the consideration set.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. That's right. Although, oh well, I don't want to get ahead. So there's a scene that happens a little bit later that I'll bring. I'm gonna circle back to this. Um but then when she's in the show, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, in this episode.

SPEAKER_01

In this episode, yes. When she gets to the table, like from that, um the anxiety that I felt when she sat, it was like she was sitting at a table with a bunch of just the though these girls were like, and what's funny is what is the name of the character that Conrad was kissing? What is that girl's name? Do you remember? Nicole. Nicole. Nicole establishes, do you I don't you obviously pick this up? She establishes immediately by being like, oh, it's basically like their sister. Like she makes sure to put her in her place in like a behind like a smile kind of way, and it's like, oh wow.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and you're like, oh, this is what these what Conrad has said about Isabel to her, regardless whether it's true or not.

SPEAKER_01

That's what well, do you think that she feels threatened?

SPEAKER_03

Nicole in this in this I I would say as someone two years older, I would probably feel the feel like, oh, it's so cute. She's like Conrad maybe said, like, oh, she has a crush on me, but she's like my sister gross, or you know, or something. I mean, they had such a weird interaction with like you don't even like the red socks or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Or whatever, or the the yang, like whatever it was about the hat the girl had on the hat of the team that Conrad doesn't like the night before the you know the night before.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And um, so I'm sure he had to explain something away because you're like, Who is that girl? Yeah, and it's like, oh, she's like my sister, she's so annoying. And if he's got something going with this girl that's his age and she's two years younger, then of course he's gonna say I th I think he's gonna say that. I don't think he's I think it's perfectly wrong.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. She also taught us, like, then there's that other girl that asks about Jeremiah. And they're like, Well, blonde girl. Yeah, she's had her eyes on him since he got abs that everyone's like, yeah. So it's like it's a little bit like, okay, what is this table for and well, because then someone asks her uh about what's it like living with the boys, and then you can see she like has this like the camera stays on her for like kind of a long time. She's uh in my opinion, really good acting. She's just like really and then gets cut off by the the host of the of the luncheon.

SPEAKER_03

It's like, oh yeah, by the bell, because she's like, Oh god, what do I say?

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and she realizes, I think, then how unique it is, this situation that she's in, and how totally and you and you also realize like they haven't really socialized a lot.

SPEAKER_01

Um when they're there, you mean like they kind of just stated themselves, yeah, totally.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they've it's she would presumably know all these kids if they were the you know, they're members of the club, you'd think they'd go to the pool frequently or whatever. Yeah. So um, yes, and I think that you know, the best part is is that she kind of holds her ground, she's tries to be, she's polite, she doesn't seem to hate it, they're quite nice to her. Um, you know, you and and I think that you know, for anybody that was like, oh, I don't know about this Deb thing, even though it was rocky with who she was sitting next to, between like Steven's new girl and and um Conrad's that and apparently this girl that likes Jeremiah, that that she's like, okay, this I at least as a viewer, I'm like, okay, this might work. Like this could be this could be okay. There's the girl that's talking about bringing her girl to the, you know, and they all are kind of rolling their eyes at it and don't, you know, they're not giving it the like, oh, I'm so proud of my debutante. They're all kind of giving it the credence, and I'm like, okay, well, this, you know, this will be a nice little chapter for her, some good girlfriends and yeah, some new people in the mix for sure.

SPEAKER_01

And then they pass the flask around the table.

SPEAKER_03

And then they pass the flask around the table, um, which she doesn't take, which is she doesn't. She gets up.

SPEAKER_01

Interesting. She gets up, and that's when she runs into cam, right? She runs into cam and then he asks her out.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And then we're, you know, on their on the way.

SPEAKER_01

So I love about them though, is like the dialogue between them. You can tell like they both get really excited. She's like a she is very impressed with how smart he is. Yes. They like have really good um sarcasm with each other. It's just like I like the energy of them together. It's it's it's nice.

SPEAKER_03

Well, like last week when we were talking about how like they there's something about them that's very even.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

You know, there's a class thing that's I mean, I don't know that it's exact, but there's, you know, there's like there's not a lot of competition, there's not a lot of like jockeying. It just feels like, oh, this is a good first love for her.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I like that she's not like she's not sh shy and nervous. She's kind of just like really, she's in it. She's into it. She's like, okay, cool, yeah, let's see what this is. And it's so obvious. Wait, I wrote a note about him. Let me see.

SPEAKER_03

Well, the whole like dialogue about being wistful. Oh, I was so wistful.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and I was thinking about and you know, actually, the the the I forgot about this. The show opens with her trying to go chase the boat, and she's got her. Oh, right, she tries to catch him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's right. That's right.

SPEAKER_03

And I mean, I, you know, like when you're uh I mean, I'm I don't even know that this is untrue as an adult, but like when you get something of somebody else's and you're like, she's like wearing the jacket, she's not carrying it to give it back to him, she's like, I'm gonna wear it on this boat trip because he gave it to me. So um, you know, she definitely likes him, but is not, I mean, she seems like excited but not um out of her depth. So what was your note?

SPEAKER_01

The note that I wrote is that they've set this episode up to have Cameron presented as the safest choice for Belly.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And that that like he is like you, it's exactly what you just said. They're just it makes sense. It's a very obvious decision, so obviously it can't be the long-term thing, but it is it is like wow, he is the safe choice for her. So we're it's basically giving us our test sample here so we can see what's about to unfold. Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, well, and he but he's also not really competition for Conrad or Jeremiah. Yeah, no, totally, you know, other than being very smart um and her and maybe a little bit closer to her age, he might even be more like Jeremiah's age because he's talking about going to college.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but he's you know, they he's not really a threat to either of them, yeah,

Cam As Belly’s Safe Choice

SPEAKER_03

seemingly, but then they get to the book party.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Wait before wait, before the book party. This is what I wanted to circle back to. Yes, yes, that's exactly it. So the the boys are playing the video games, and she comes down looking like a teenager, like a grown, a grown-up, grown woman. And this is where I wanted to circle back because okay, what remind me real quick, I'll cut this out. What were the three it that you mentioned in the book, the th the three archetypes that you were mentioning?

SPEAKER_03

Someone that border bully, border buddy, and then I can't remember the third buddy.

SPEAKER_01

So border in this scene, I feel like is another instance where Jeremiah is a border buddy. Yes. He jumps up, he twirls her around, he's like, Wow, you're so hot. But you can it's not in like a I'm hitting on you way. It's like he's being he's like gassing her up. Yes, he's like stoked for her, and then brother Steven, of course.

SPEAKER_03

And and you know, like, you look great, have fun.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And Steven's like, why are you walking away from the video game? But then even he's like, You look good though.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he snaps at her and then he's like, You look good though.

SPEAKER_03

So Conrad doesn't say a word.

SPEAKER_01

I mean he doesn't even turn around, I don't think.

SPEAKER_03

Like, I think as she's leaving, he turns around. Oh, that's right, yes, yes.

SPEAKER_01

But he doesn't look at her when he she's like engaging with them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so I'm gonna say another point for Jeremiah. I mean, granted. It is, it is he's still a friend, you know. I mean, he's still in friend zone 100%, but he's just um, you know, he's just for her. And um, and I think that, you know, if I as an adult that's single and dating, watching how she is with Cam, I'm like, there's just an ease there that you want in a relationship. And and like they the fact that these boys don't feel threatened about him theoretically, um, then that means that they can be for her. And they can be, you know, they're and you know, of course, of course, he begins to befriend them and you know, they they have like kind of a great little thing with him that keeps on going for a couple seasons.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um so what do you think about the decision? They get to the book party, and what do you think about the decision and the whole dialogue around they're sitting three of them? I mean, I can so see this. I have six guy cousins, if you include my brother, and I can so see this moment of just them like sitting on the couch, drugged to a party, bored out of their gourd, and they they're like, What can we do?

SPEAKER_01

And it's Conrad's decision to go to the drive-in. It was his idea.

SPEAKER_03

Was it his idea or was it Steven's idea? And he's like, Wait, no, seriously.

SPEAKER_01

It ends up being Conrad is the one that says, Yeah, let's go.

SPEAKER_03

Let's go. Yeah, he's the one that says like it was like, Oh, I thought Steve, maybe Steven did bring it up. We could he does, oh, we can go to the drive in the belly. And Jeremiah says, So this is our next, oh gross, I don't want to see her make out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So it's kind of that was a that could be taken two ways. Like, I don't want to see my sister make out with a boy. That could also be taken, you know, kind of like here's this person that I see in this like youthful way, but it could also be like, we've already had the like my future wife comment. It could be like, I don't, you know, I don't want to see, I don't want to see that. Like I'm for her, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I don't want to see that. Um, and then Conrad's like, wait, yo, seriously, or something. It was like, yeah, I was like, oh, is that Gen Z writing? Like they and Gen Z writing things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like there's something she was oh, when she's walking up to the table with all the girls and she's and she's like narrating FML. And I'm like, Oh yeah. I'm like, that's hilarious that you felt like you had to narrate you like her voiceover was FML. FML, yeah. Like the spelling it out. So yeah, so so they're like off to the um off to the thing. How much do you love that it was Sabrina? There's so many, so many, you know, alignments with obviously Sabrina. I need to go back and watch both movies.

SPEAKER_01

Which one was it? It was Sabrina, it was the um was it the original? It wasn't the one with Harrison Ford. It was the original. Yeah. I love the one with Harrison Ford.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

So good.

SPEAKER_03

It's so like awkward and you know, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, it's uh I love that that was the movie that they're watching. I love I love their interaction. I think it's really sweet when they're watching the movie, good conversation. Um, he wants to be a marine biologist. She's asking him why. He's it's just like a really cute date. Everything's going great,

Drive-In Crash And Conrad’s Control

SPEAKER_01

and then who rolls up?

SPEAKER_03

And then a red jeep rolls up.

SPEAKER_01

Right on right up on him.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and the thing that's so disappointing, which so I'll take a point from Jeremiah on this one, is that like after he was against it, he rolls up in full, like making fun. Oh, you're gonna kiss, you know, kind of like as as brothers would do.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but uh, and then I mean, what does Conrad say in the background in the backseat? Not much.

SPEAKER_01

No, he doesn't say much, and then I don't think he says anything, right? Because then Belly gets out and she's like, leave. She's pretty serious. They're like, uh, but then she gets serious, looks at Conrad and says, seriously, leave. And then he says, Let's go. When Steven says Stephen says it was your idea to come.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, and she's like, I mean, I would have been so mad and confused and frustrated in that moment, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

If you were in that situation, what would you have what would you have felt?

SPEAKER_01

Conf I would have felt ext extreme anxiety and confusion. Just like this guy that I have this crush on is the one that decided to roll up, but he's being weirdly mean to me and like distant. And so now how am I supposed to get back into this other car and pretend like, oh, it was just these my brothers doing the play.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Did you do you think that Cam saw them?

SPEAKER_01

So yes, I did, and then but on the rewatch, I mean that's what I had originally thought, but then when you rewatch it, he doesn't really act like he saw.

SPEAKER_03

He kind of is like because it was like awkward for a second.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but then like immediately passed it. Yeah, I also I don't know. I don't I don't know that he actually saw or took in what was going on fully. Maybe he thought they were she was just saying hi or something. Because she didn't she just got back in and like picked up where they left off. She wasn't like, oh, that was so annoying. Like she doesn't act.

SPEAKER_03

But they were like going in for the kiss, and then that was like cut off until they get back to the house.

SPEAKER_01

And then the kiss continues.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, and they get he gets it's I mean, there there is that point when it is said I'm like, oh, this is the teenager movie, maybe I should stop watching. Um because they don't take their um they don't take their seat belts off. Seat belts off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So funny.

SPEAKER_03

Steven Steven sneaking out.

SPEAKER_01

Stephen sneaks out, he goes to the beach.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. All I can think about is how much sand that girl has all over her.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because she took her top off.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

I was like, oh god.

SPEAKER_03

I know.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like this girl. The I the funny and ironic part of this is that now Steven is going to the debutante ball.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

So it's all we're it's all coming together.

SPEAKER_01

It's all coming together.

SPEAKER_03

Well, she won't. She who is she gonna take Cam? Is she gonna take Jeremiah? Is she gonna take Conrad? Um, it's all a ton of fun. Um and final thoughts. I mean, I guess it's a little bit more.

SPEAKER_01

Well, she walks in the house.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, she does walk in the house, that's right.

SPEAKER_01

She walks in the house and there's Conrad. And I think it's kind of the first time we see them really go like like that at each other. And uh, but she stands her ground. I'm like proud of her for it. She's just very much like, what? Like, no, I'm not like she's not gonna take it. Um and obviously, like that that to me is the writing in that is just to like remind the viewer, like, this is the underlying story of what we're watching here is this relationship, and you can tell that it's it's deep and it's complicated.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Well, and what does she say? Go smoke some pot, and she's like, Why don't you go smoke some more weed? Yeah, and he's like, Why don't you go look in the mirror?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, why don't you go look in the mirror?

SPEAKER_03

What a tough retort, you know. That's so mean.

SPEAKER_01

I am embarrassed by him for that.

SPEAKER_03

Got you.

SPEAKER_01

It's like, what does that even mean? Like, thank you for calling me pretty.

SPEAKER_03

I'm she's looking at herself in the mirror. And well, this is where so we've got a couple book related things to talk about.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, please tell me.

SPEAKER_03

Um, so this is where I think they sometimes just stick really close to the book in the script. Like you'll go and you'll like you'll uh because I I listened to just a little bit of it, but I do I don't I don't know for sure, but that's the kind of thing that would be in the book because I feel like they're a little bit more like aged up in just sort of theory in

Book Differences And Jeremiah’s Label

SPEAKER_03

the show, just because they're they just seem more like mature, but in the book it's very much written as so I I can see it seems like maybe that's something that you know that was in the book. He was smoking cigarettes in the book. I forgot. I don't know if we talked about this last week. It wasn't, I think it wasn't pot. I think I'm pretty sure it was cigarettes, not pot.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay, interesting.

SPEAKER_03

Um in the book, and then um the the dev ball's pretty similar, you know, like the dead lunch and all that is is you know somewhat similar. Another scene that is very different and sort of opens up a I think a chat a kind of a piece of um Jeremiah that that I thought it was in episode one, but it's in episode two, is where Jeremiah and Steven are at the pool and they're like, We're the gods of summer, this is gonna be so great, and Steven's got his hair nut on, and he's like, So you again you see that like, oh, I need to make money so I don't have to live at my parent at my mom's house, and Jeremiah's like, no, I just need to be here so I can like flirt with people. But um, you know, he's like, Oh, I've hooked up with girls and with guys, and um and that is not in the book.

SPEAKER_01

And so interesting at all.

SPEAKER_03

And so um it I mean that he's that he's a little bit that he dates around and you know and things like that. But he's I I I would say I probably had discounted him completely because I don't think at this point I it really was to me gonna be I think it was sort of like a will I I don't know what I thought it was, but I think it was like a will they or won't they belly, but I don't know that I thought it was gonna be this like because it was the summer she turned she turned pretty. I was like, yeah, she would go through all of cousins, you know?

SPEAKER_01

Oh right, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I think at this point I I thought it was like will she or won't she with Conrad or just is this just like a coming of age thing? Um I didn't think a lot about Jeremiah, but I think I kind of discounted him because I didn't think that Belly being as immature as she would would want somebody who was bisexual or just you know considered themselves you know open to both men and women. And so I think it makes him an unsafe, I think it makes Jeremiah a little bit of an unsafe choice for her. Yeah. And so I I really kind of discounted him. But notice that they keep it a little PG because he's like, oh, I just like to kiss and be cozy. You don't know if he's like sleeping around or just kiss and be cozy. But I think that that um that is a and there's some other stuff that's in the book that you know that shows up in the next episode when Taylor comes around that I think is really interesting. But I think that's that's the one for me that I feel like they kind of did him dirty because he just seems he just I mean for me automatically I was like, oh, that's risky for her.

SPEAKER_01

100%. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Especially at that age. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And uh so interesting. And just that that they were so it felt like you it felt like an unuseful decision. Does that make sense? Like it didn't hold It doesn't really help his character, and they go back to that over and over and over again is kind of this like definition for him.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and it's I wonder what that why they did that.

SPEAKER_01

That's so interesting.

SPEAKER_03

I think it was just maybe trying to tap into something that's happening generationally right now. You know, from conversationally, and it's like in the zeitgeist, like, oh, this is you know, we need we need somebody that's gay or bi in this show or something like that. True. Like we need, you know, like we we need to represent this, you know, this which is happen, you know, young people are definitely coming out more frequently, or yeah, um, you know, how it it it definitely I would I would like to talk to a Gen Z person and see if it replicates their experience, but you hear, you know, word on the street is it's a lot more um common and um as is you know the the at a you know adoption of like um trans. And um so I think that that is um that that for me kind of has made Jeremiah a non-starter for a lot of the show until I really until they really, really got together. And I was like, oh, he, you know, not to sp I mean spoilers all over the place on this episode. But um but for me, I was like, oh yeah, he's he's not gonna be able to work for her because I just don't think she's gonna be feel like she can trust him.

SPEAKER_01

Wow, yeah, that's such an that's an interesting take, but totally tracks, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And maybe and that may be my own personal bias. But any other thoughts toward the end or just about any of that?

SPEAKER_01

I mean it was a it was a lot to take in. We didn't even talk about, but we get we ought to also see some character development with um Laurel and her could this be a love interest? Yeah, could

Points Scorecard And Relationship Lessons

SPEAKER_01

this be something uh a spark happening here? Um but a lot of there was a so much character development. But you know, I think season one is eight episodes, I think, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it is.

SPEAKER_01

It's eight episodes. I still think they're doing a great job. It's like it doesn't feel like an overwhelming lot. You get a lot of information each episode, but it moves well.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Well, and I think that and also there's the scene where um Cleveland and Conrad hook up for sailing lessons, which he's also also a little bit of a jerk about. So I would say closing out on our scorecard. I would love to know what where you are on the whole thing, but you know, Cam gets all the point most of the points of this one.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna say Conrad gets none.

SPEAKER_03

You think none, even though he sat for his mom?

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, I guess I was thinking in strictly when it comes to belly. Yes, let's give him one for sitting with his mom and uh and agreeing to get a summer job. Um I think Jeremiah kind of gets half a point deduction for the drive-in movie scene.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, mm-hmm. The flip-flopping on the drive drive-in movie. But he does. But he does get some points for um for, you know, just like celebrating Belly and and you know, walking her into the dead ball, you know, telling her she looks hot, kind of cheering her. Gassing her up, yeah. Um I think I think it's played well. I also don't think that we have fully captured how good looking Gavin Calciano is yet in this show.

SPEAKER_01

No, we haven't, yeah. It's coming though.

SPEAKER_03

Like I think he've just kind of evolved because he's got he's got the beautiful blue eyes, of course. Yeah, but he's got the big smile, he's got a mouthful of teeth, and so he's cute, but I think he I think he gets cuter.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he does.

SPEAKER_03

Um, and and and of course they're not giving him the good lighting yet or no, no the background music either.

SPEAKER_01

He's not getting the extras yet.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, but uh, but he you know, he's definitely handsome and and obviously all the girls and the guys at the pool really like him, but he's uh I I think he gets a point for just rousing her up, being positive. Um he can will deduct a half a point for the vehicle because I because of you know the drive-in theater and how he was in the car, because I just think like he again it's back to inconsistent. I think that's the biggest with him is that like he is consistently supportive of Belly if you watch what tracks, but I think that and this is sort of like my big hypothesis is like men are inconsistent, like they're just not like like like assuming that a guy's always gonna be one way because they say that they love you or whatever, because women are inconsistent too, like people are inconsistent, yeah. And so there is a little bit of inconsistency with him that's showing up between like dating guys at girls, and you know, like being really for her, and then also driving them to the um, you know, to the drive-in theater, and um, but I think that Jeremiah overall is like for Belly, and so I think that we want more people for us in our lives, and I think it's a good example of like what does a good relationship, how does a good relationship start when you're just like on each other's team?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, a hundred percent. Yeah, very much.

SPEAKER_03

You may not be, you know, like not every uh not every player on every team is consistent. True, but you know, if you're for each other, does that count for more?

SPEAKER_01

It well, it's certainly a good starting point, a great starting point.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. And then Cam gets points for like moving on that quick, man. He's like moving tonight. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

No hesitation. Do I get any points for having really I'm my hair's getting closer and closer to Conrad? Do you see this?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, your hair is full and thick.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03
