This week on Get the Picture?, we're talking about chasing your dreams. In this shorter episode, I'm sharing why having a little bit of "delusion" can actually be one of the biggest advantages when you're building a photography business, chasing big goals, or creating a life you genuinely want. We’re getting into the mindset that separates people who take chances from the ones who stay stuck, and why believing in yourself might be the most important skill you can develop. Hey you guys, welcome back to another episode of Get the Picture. I'm your host, Tori Elizabeth, and I'm so excited to be with you guys today. I hope you guys absolutely loved my interview with Pale Blue Wave. I know I did. It was so fun to film, and it was also fun to go back and listen to. I feel like I learned so much. Um, I actually have to share with you guys when I was in Oregon. Well, first I'll tell you how this interview happened. So I, you know, I was like, okay, I want to have my first guest on the podcast. Who do I want to have? I didn't want to just have someone on to have a guest on. Like, I wanted it to be someone that is actually interesting, like someone that, like, I don't know, I actually want to interview, and I'm excited about interviewing. And like the first person that popped into my head was Ryan, um, which I didn't even know his name was Ryan at the time, to be honest. I just knew him as Pale Blue Wave, but I was just like, you know what, I'm gonna shoot my shot. I just DMed him, I was like, Hey, would you want to be on the pod? He said yes. Um, I originally was gonna do like a virtual interview, but then I remembered like I have a wedding in Portland, I should just do it in person. So I rented a studio, we did the interview, and yeah, it was great. You guys heard the interview. He has a lot of great things to share. He's also just like really interesting, so it's cool to I don't know, it's just cool to hear his perspective on what he does. It's just like a little bit different than I thought it would have been. Um, and I don't know, it was just really inspiring. And so after I did this interview with him, I drove an hour and a half to the coast. I didn't have my wedding wasn't until the next day, so I had the rest of the day. I drove an hour and a half to the coast to Cannon Beach and I asked three random couples to take their photos. So I was feeling very inspired after the interview. I love Cannon Beach. I didn't have any other shoots lined up there. Typically, I do line up other shoots when I'm traveling, but it just happened this time that um the shoot I was supposed to have fell through, and so I had a free afternoon and I was like, let's make the most of it. So I asked three random couples. I was it was awesome, it was great. I took a lot of his advice about like not overthinking it to heart. Um, the first time I had ever asked random couples to take their photos, I sat there for I'm not kidding, 30 minutes. I think I mentioned this in the interview too. I sat there for like 30 minutes trying to hype myself up, trying to get the courage to go up and ask them if I could take their photo. And so he talked about not overthinking it. Like he also talked about how much he gets rejected, and that made me realize like it's not the end of the world if I get rejected. Like, if he gets rejected, what did he say at the end? Like 80% of the time, like I might get rejected, and it's literally fine. So I didn't overthink it this time. I just I spotted a couple, I just beelined for them, like, hey, can I take your photo? I had my meta glasses on. So I've already posted one of them on TikTok. It's going viral right now. Um, it didn't do as well on Instagram, but which kind of matches up with what Ryan said actually, because when he originally started off doing this, he did the best on TikTok. So it's kind of interesting that that's happening to me too. Um, I don't know how much of like a thing I'm gonna make this, but I definitely enjoyed doing it, and I do think I want to make it at least like a semi-regular thing. Um so yeah, I have one that's doing well on TikTok. By the time this video, this podcast episode comes out, I'm sure I'll have posted at least my second or third ones. So obviously go check those out if you haven't already. The photos, the photos are so good. All of them are so cute, but obviously like the lighting got prettier and prettier like as I asked different couples, and like I don't know, their outfits all just match the vibe. It was just perfect. It just I totally get what he's saying about like you can just feel if it's the right person or not. I was trying to tap into that a little bit, and so yeah, that was super fun to try to put what he talked about into practice. So if you guys haven't tried something like that, I totally encourage you to do it. If you don't have, you know, if you have a GoPro meta glasses or even like a phone mount, you can use any of them. I feel like a GoPro and meta glasses are a little bit better for this type of content. I feel like it's better to see your hands and your camera in the shot. But if all you have is a phone mount, go for it. If you don't have a phone mount, I have one linked in my Amazon storefront. I think it's like nine dollars right now. Um, it's like on sale. And so if you don't already have one, go to my Amazon storefront. It's linked on both my podcast Instagram and my person my at Tori Elizabeth Photo Instagram. In my bio, go to like camera gear accessories or whatever, and it's like a little red and black phone mount. Go get that. It goes right on your hot shoe, any hot shoe, it's a universal phone mount, and then your phone goes in it, and then you're just gonna like record you going up, asking the couple to take photos, and then you actually taking photos of them. So if you don't know a good place to go, go to either somewhere touristy where there's lots of tourists and like different people coming in who like maybe are already kind of dressed up, like ready to take photos, go to a busy like street, like a city, or go to like a college campus or something. Those are like my three recommendations of good places to go to. And I would love if you guys would like DM me your videos. I I would love to see them. I think it'd be so fun to see like which of you guys are inspired to do this because of the interview. Like, so sorry. Um, yeah, that would just be awesome. I am in the middle of my busy season right now, like most of you guys. I just got back from Oregon um doing this interview, my stranger sessions, um, and the wedding that I shot in Portland, which was beautiful, so gorgeous. And then I got home, I have a few days, I'm like batching all my content right now, and then I'm hopping right back on a plane tomorrow and going to New York for another wedding. So, right in the middle of busy season, it's amazing though. I'm so grateful to be doing this, and I'm starting to feel it though, like a lot of you guys. So hang in there, you guys have got this. Really quick, I'll tell you guys about my Portland wedding. It was gorgeous. I got to work with one of my friends. It was in Oregon City, which is like I think technically considered like a suburb outside of Portland. It's like southeast of Portland. Um, it's kind of like a little bit more in the middle of nowhere. It was on like a Christmas tree farm. It was like it was super pretty, very green, very lush. Like the spots that we did their couples' portraits, just so I mean, just so green. Like they're gorgeous. Hopefully by now I'll have been able to post a few of the sneak peeks and you guys can see them. Um, but if you haven't already seen them, go check them out. But they're like very green, just like very Pacific Northwest vibes. Um, and that's like my favorite area to be is the Pacific Northwest. So yeah, this couple, we did their engagements in Portland when I was there for my last wedding in Portland, and it was in the fall, and they had like the prettiest fall engagements. I they're like a big I've posted some of them. Like I posted some when I was on the plane going to Portland, like going to Portland right now for these cuties' weddings. Um, here are their engagement photos. So if you want to go look at who I'm talking about, their engagement photos, they had like a big yellow, like fall tree in the background, and they're like really small. Um, so that's who I'm talking about. Those were their engagements from Portland. And then yeah, their wedding was yeah, very green, very pretty. Um we had a couple crises, crises that we had to deal with. We got like an hour, it wasn't related to photography, but just like logistics and things. The the weather was crazy, and they were waiting to call if they were doing inside or outside for the ceremony, and so we ended up getting an hour behind schedule. So I had to make up time in the second half of the day. Um, and it would end up being okay, like we did it. Um, they had it was pouring rain at one point. Like, I kid you not, I had to walk. Well, we were running, but I had to run with my camera underneath my bride's dress, like under the skirt of her dress, to make sure that it didn't literally break. Because I just bought a second um R6 Mark II, and I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yes, it's weather sealed, but we're not messing, like this is brand new. We're we're protecting this bad boy, so that was crazy. And then the other crazy thing that happened is my bride's necklace broke. Like, my second shooter, me and the planner, I think it took like 20 minutes, but we were trying to like fix her necklace. I was we like tried to like one of the little clasp pieces, like the little rings on the necklace, like came loose, and so we were like, oh, like we just need to close it, and then we dropped it and we couldn't find it, and I'm totally outing myself right now with this. But I was like dedicated, like making sure, and there was no way like someone had to fix it, like we were just trying our best to fix it. Um, but I was like trying to, I was like ready to take apart my necklace to get a clasp off there to like fix it. We were like gonna do anything. Um, and then I realized we could take apart the end of the necklace that's like the clasp behind her neck that you don't see, take one ring from that and do it. And so we got the wedding planner or the coordinator involved, and she had like some like tweezers or not tweezers, um oh my gosh, what are they called? Pliers. I don't know if that's the right word. Okay, um, but we got some something, and she was able to like kind of get a close, and then I tried it again, and like we were able to get it like really tight, and so it kind of come undone. And so I told my bride about it, obviously, but we were we were able to just say, like, hey, this happened, but we fixed it. So crisis averted. Um photographers have to do so many things on wedding days. It is so nerve-wracking to be in charge of like jewelry and rings and everything. I know everyone has like literally flashes of like intrusive thoughts or like nightmares go through their head anytime they're handling rings, and it's just like, what if I dropped the rings? Like, what if this happened? Like, what you know, whatever. Um, so here to tell you, one of those things did happen, and we made it through it. We got through it, we fixed the necklace, and everything was okay. And the detail photos still ate, so and by the way, it was not our fault that it broke, it just like we pulled the necklace out and it had just like come undone. We were just like, God! And I could have just handed it to my bride and just say, Hey, we found it like this, but like we wanted to try to fix it. Obviously, you don't like if you're new to the wedding world, like you do everything you can as a wedding photographer to avoid stressing out a bride or groom or any just your couples on a wedding day. Um, especially if it's like the wedding is already running behind, like the bride is stressed. You don't just hand her a broken necklace and say, Deal with it. Like, you do everything you can so that she does not have to even know what happened until after the problem has been solved. Um, so I was super grateful for an awesome coordinator and second shooter. Shout out Kaylee if you're listening. And yeah, so anyway, it was a beautiful day. It was a crazy day, but it was beautiful. We had to end up doing our wedding the wedding party photos like after, like during cocktail hour, which was not ideal because I know my couple really wanted to be at cocktail hour. But that was kind of the only time. Um, and right when we were trying to take wedding party photos, it starts like downpouring. That was when I was running with my camera under the bride's dress. Anyway, it was insane. But there was this little like gazebo-ish area that we were able to finish the wedding party photos in, and it was not like I'm so glad we were able to get those couple photos, like their first-looking couple photos, in the like green, like the lush green part of the venue before the weather got crazy later, because I just feel like I was able to still get them like a really good variety that captured like the whole venue. So, anyway, it was a beautiful day. I'll have to give you guys an update on my New York wedding after I get back. But go check out my Instagram if you want to see some of the photos. I'm sure I'll have posted sneak peeks. Or maybe if you're watching on YouTube, actually, maybe I'll put some sneak peeks right here so you guys can see. Because, yeah, anything for my YouTube listeners. If you wanna do like something to like support me, um, I already am getting a ton of downloads and listens on I think it's mainly Apple Podcasts and then also Spotify, obviously. Um, so if you want to go like watch on YouTube, like just let it run through. Or if you're just gonna listen anyway, like just play it on YouTube, like split screen on your computer or something. And then if you leave me a comment and just like copy, like copy the link, like share copy link on YouTube, that would mean the world, because obviously, like my Instagram and my TikTok are and everything are growing, but like I'm new to YouTube, so anything would help me boost my videos a little bit on YouTube. So leave a comment on YouTube if you want to. I'll love you forever. Or if you're on Apple Podcasts, um leave like a a review if you want. Tell me what your favorite episode's been, or like what you've liked hearing so far. I'd love if you leave me a five-star review, all the things. But I just yapped for like a solid probably 10 minutes now. So I am gonna jump right into the episode. I'm gonna be completely honest with you guys, I don't have any like, I don't usually have a script, but I don't even have any notes for today's episode. I'm just speaking from the heart. I'm just giving you guys all my thoughts. Um, this is meant to be kind of like an inspirational episode, so maybe a good one to listen to like while you're editing or something, um, while you already have like something to do. But today I am talking about why being delusional is actually a superpower, and how being delusional has helped me to get to where I'm at. And what I mean by delusional is just like unfazed by like reality, I guess. I feel like that's probably a pretty good definition of delusional, just like unaffected by reality or by like um how difficult things might actually be. Um, so I feel like the reason I wanted to talk about this is because I always get questions anytime I post like, oh, I hit this milestone on Instagram, like when I was posting 10k, 12k, 15k, like now I'm about to hit 20k. I'm sure I'll have hit 20k by the time this comes out. Um, anytime I post like a milestone, people are like, oh my gosh, girl, how? How do you do this? Like, how are you growing on social media? How do you do this? And it's like, quite honestly, my answer to you is you need to be delusional. You need to think that it's so realistic and that it's gonna happen and that you're gonna get there. And if you like convince yourself that it's gonna happen and you're gonna get there, you will get there. Like, I'm I'm absolutely so confident in that. I feel like that is like obviously it's work ethic and a lot of, but but there's so many people that work hard that like aren't growing as fast as I'm growing, or like, you know, like that type of thing. And so it's like what sets the people who get super big apart from the people that don't, and I quite honestly think it's being delusional. Like, I think you need to be delusional. I think you need to be like, yeah, it's not if I get to 20k, it's when I get to 20k, because that's always been in the back of my head as I talk about it like, oh yeah, when I get to 20k, and then when I get to 50k, and then what if I get to a million? You know, it's it's like the what ifs are like the big numbers, but like like 20k in my head has never been like an if. It's always when am I gonna get there? How am I gonna get there? And so if you approach it like that, I feel like you're setting like steps to make it happen, versus if it's an if, like, oh, if I ever get to 20k in the back of your head, you're never gonna get there because you're not actually pushing yourself to meet the goal. Like it's not a goal, it's just a wish. So, right now, if you're someone who has a wish in the back of your head that you want to get to a certain number on social media, or you want to get to a certain number of weddings booked in a year, or you want to go full time and it's like a wish, like, oh, if I ever get there one day, like, oh, I would love to get there, I want you to turn it into a goal. I want you to say when I go full time, this is how I want it to be. How long do I want it to take for me to go full time? What can I do to get there? I want you to set like actual actionable steps to get there instead of just having it be like a wish, birthday candle dream in the back of your head. You need to make it a reality. So you need to be delusional, you need to tell yourself it's gonna happen, you need to tell yourself it's not that hard, I'm gonna be able to do it. Like I can do this, I care enough, I'm gonna make it happen. So that's kind of the first thing that I want to get in your head is stop saying if, start saying when, and then say, how am I gonna do that? So I'm gonna give you like a really simple example of how I've done this recently, just because I don't want to make it too complicated. I just want to give you like an easy example. So I started my TikTok a little over a year ago, and I was really late to TikTok, like I've mentioned before, and I think the last time I mentioned TikTok on the podcast, I was about to hit 5k. Well, I'm about to hit 10k, and it's been like two weeks since I recorded that podcast episode. Uh, which is which is crazy, which is crazy because um, let's see, at the beginning of this year I had like 1.5k on TikTok, and now I have almost 10k, and it's like halfway through the year. So that's crazy to me. That's like triple how fast I grew on Instagram. I feel like it's also a little bit easier to grow on TikTok because if you didn't already know, TikTok shows your your content to non-followers first, which is why it's easier to get followers on TikTok because you're, you know, Instagram you have to perform well to your followers first, and then it might get pushed to non-followers. But I wanted to give my example of TikTok because I feel like this is a really good example of how I've been kind of delusional and how it's paid off. Um, the reason it's such a big deal to hit 10k on TikTok, which I'm I should hit honestly by the end of this week or next. But the reason it's such a big deal is because 10k, as far as I understand, maybe I'm wrong, but as far as I understand, 10k is when you can actually be monetized. So like right now I can post TikTok shop videos, but like I'm not I don't really I've tried a few, they don't really do well. I don't really care. I just feel like it it's kind of fake to do TikTok shop. No hate if you do it and if it works for you. I just like that's not really my thing. I don't feel like it would work with my audience. I feel like you have to have like a very, I don't know, a different type of audience for that to work. I feel like you have to do a lot of fashion and beauty stuff in order for your audience to actually care. And obviously that's not what I'm posting. So I feel like TikTok shop is not really where it's gonna work for me, but I'm really excited for my videos to be able to be monetized. Um, because I have a lot of stuff that does really well and goes viral on TikTok, and it would be great to make money from that, obviously. So if you guys want to help me out, go share, comment, and everything on TikTok. Um, hopefully I'll have hit 10k by the time this episode comes out. But anyway, sorry, that was very long-winded. But the reason it's such a big deal to hit 10k is because you can be monetized. And I started off at like 1.5k at the beginning of this year, like I said, and I was just like, you know what? I am done just posting my photography on TikTok, it's not working. I feel like my ideal clients are not on TikTok. Definitely, there are some clients on TikTok, and I have gotten inquiries since my account has grown. But I was like, this is not working, like I'm not growing fast enough. Like I already had 1.5k in a year, that's like decent. But I was like, no, no, no, no, no, I want big numbers on TikTok. I want to get to like 30k on TikTok and have that transfer over to my Instagram. Like, I want big numbers. How am I gonna do that? And I was like, okay, this current content is not working. What am I gonna do? And so I tried a couple different things. I was like, okay, we're gonna make it like a lifestyle thing. So I was doing like photography and lifestyle. Like I posted a thrift haul, I posted blah blah blah, whatever, stuff like that. And then I was like, what if I just post uh educational video? Like I had seen there's this one makeup artist I follow, I think her it's Selena M U A, I think might be her tag on Instagram, and she would do videos where she was like teaching herself how to do makeup, so like talking back and forth to different versions of herself. And I was like, okay, I've seen those do really well. I always think they're really interesting. What if I do that for photography? And so I made one like funny video and that did kind of well, and then I made one educational video and it it blew up. Just the first one blew up. It's still going on Instagram, still going on TikTok. It has over, it's only like a hundred K on both platforms, but I have over 2,000 followers from it on just Instagram, which is pretty crazy for a reel that has only 100,000 views. Um, that one is pinned to my reels. If you want to go see which one I'm talking about, it says like, um, in case no one taught you camera settings, or like if no one taught you, yeah, something about camera settings. Um, but I just tried it and it blew up. And so I was like, okay, we're gonna run with this. I am going to turn my TikTok account into a photography education account. And I added to my bio like your photo teacher, and I was like, we're just gonna do this because that worked, that was fun. If you guys didn't know, I went to school for education, like I went to College for education, and so I was like, this would be a really fun way to combine these two things, and so yeah, like these two passions of mine, and so I was like, hey, we're gonna run with this. My TikTok account is now a photography education account, and I have just been posting tons of photography education videos since then. Now I had already been posting photography education here and there, especially on my Instagram. Like I post a ton of feed posts, like text posts for photography education on my Instagram, but I hadn't really done it on TikTok, and so I just basically converted my entire TikTok account into photography education. And I still post my regular, like my actual photography, like my work too, but I just ran with it and I was like, we're just this, this is gonna be the account, and this is gonna blow up. And I just told myself that. I was like, I'm just gonna keep doing videos like this, they're gonna keep blowing up, and I'm gonna keep growing. And all of a sudden, I've grown almost like it's like 9k in six months. Um, so yeah, that's my the the lesson there is you first of all, you need to run with what's working. You need to try different things in order to figure out what does work, and then you need to tell yourself that it's gonna happen. Because imagine if I had just been like, oh, that one video blew up, it got me a thousand followers. That's awesome. Let's keep posting my photography content. Where would I be right now? Probably like 2k, like 2.5k, 3k, maybe like, but I'm about to hit 10k and be monetized because I was delusional and I told myself, no, I'm gonna make this work. This is going to happen. It wasn't if, it was when. And I was like, well, when I want it to happen as soon as possible. So let's grind. And I've been absolutely grinding, putting out like at least five solid educational posts a week, and then a ton of other like supplementary posts. Um, for example, like, I just got home from my trip, I'm exhausted, but I'm about to go record more educational content right after I film this podcast episode. Um, because I'm about to leave for New York and I need to have more stuff to post. So it means like being delusional also means being willing, willing to like like back it up. Like if you're like, I know this can happen, it's like proof it. Like, prove that this can happen. Like grind, work your butt off, like make it happen. So I feel like there's a lot of you out there that are wanting to make these goals of going full-time, booking a certain number of weddings, um, hitting a certain number on on Instagram, TikTok, whatever, starting a podcast, like whatever. Starting a podcast is another example. Like, I was just like, you know what, we're gonna start a podcast. Like, we're gonna do it. I might have five people that listen, but I know it's gonna get big. And so right now it's not if my podcast is gonna get big, it's when. And obviously, I'm you know, I'm not delusional in like thinking that I have the best podcast ever. I know I don't. I know I still have a lot of ways I need to grow and improve. Every time I listen to my podcast, I'm like, okay, I need to do that way better. Um, and one of the things I need to do better is having more of an outline for my episode. So I'm kind of growing going rogue with this episode. Just like I'm literally just word vomiting for this episode because I just feel like yapping. Sorry guys. But um, yeah, I really thought there were gonna be like five people that listen to the podcast. I can't believe just my very first podcast episode has over a hundred downloads. That's just bizarre to me because, like I said, like I really I knew it was gonna get there eventually. I didn't know how quickly it was gonna get there. But if I had I kept telling myself I needed to wait to start my podcast because I don't have a big enough following and there's not gonna be enough people that listen to it, and then I was like, you know what? I'm just gonna start it because we're just gonna start it. I just decided to. And I was a little bit delusional with thinking it would get like there would be enough people who would actually want to listen to it, um, but it paid off because there are enough people that want to listen to it, and you guys are consistently coming back every week. Each episode is getting like about the same number, if not more, than the last one. Um and yeah, it's just it's going great. So, like, there are a lot of you that I know have these big goals or have these big like dreams, but I want you to turn them into goals. I want you to act like they're gonna happen this year. Like, if I were to make it happen this year, what would I have to do in order to make that happen? And do do those things. Like, don't talk about it like it's gonna take five years. Talk about it like you can do it this year because if you don't start acting like it will, it's never going to. Okay. Okay, I've talked at you guys about nothing for long enough. Basically, I want you to just feel inspired after today's episode. It doesn't have to be social media related. I know I talk a lot about social media on the podcast. I just that's I I did a poll on my um or like a question box on my podcast Instagram, um, which if you don't follow, it's at get the picture.pod on Instagram. And I asked you guys what your favorite episodes were so far, and everyone said the ones that involved social media. So I feel like that's why a lot of you guys follow me is because you want to be better at social media and are inspired by what I do on social media, and so that's kind of why I wanted to do another episode talking about it. I feel like a lot of you guys think it's harder than it is, and a lot of it is really just deciding that it's possible and making it happen. I know that sounds like oh easier said than done, but I don't know, it's really not. Like it's it's really pretty easy if you just put in the work and tell yourself that it's gonna happen. If you talk about it like, oh, social media is so hard, I'm never gonna get there, it's gonna take me forever. Yeah, you probably never will get there. But like empower yourself, act like it's gonna happen, and it will happen. So that goes for anyone too, not just photographers, like if you're wanting to be an influencer, if you're wanting to, you know, whatever, like you guys can make it happen. I believe in you. So I want you to write down the like your wishes right now, the things that you have that are a wish, and I want you to change them into goals. So, like, I want you to write down how you currently feel. Like, I hope that I can hit a thousand followers on Instagram, and I want you to cross it off, and below it, I want you to write, I am going to hit a thousand followers on Instagram. How am I gonna do that? And then I want you to write like a three-step plan and start working on that. So at least do that for like one or two of your wishes, turn them into goals, and I want you to start working toward them as if they will happen this year. Okay, they might not, they might be like a little bit too far-fetched to happen this year, but like I want you to pretend that they're gonna happen this year and say, Okay, if I were to hit a thousand followers this year, how could it happen? Okay, this is what I'm gonna do so that I will hit a thousand followers this year. Say will and make it happen. So hopefully that made some kind of sense. I just get so many DMs of people saying, like, oh my gosh, I could never with social media, like, how do you do it? And it's like, that's the exact reason you can't, is because you're telling yourself you can't. And like I thought that for so long. I thought it was so hard to grow on social media and it would take years and years and years. And it's really been like a mind a mindset shift that has allowed me to like grow exponentially like I have. I do believe that growth on social media is exponential in the first place, but like I part of it is I've put in an exponential amount of work because I'm delusional, because I tell myself like I'm gonna hit these milestones, like I'm gonna hit 20k this year. Um, like my goal is, I don't know, 35k this year. I don't know. Like, I I just like don't limit yourself. Don't tell yourself that it's harder than it is because you're holding yourself back. So I hope this helps someone out there. I am I promise my next episode will be a little bit more structured than this, but I know a lot of you are struggling with this, and I just oh my gosh, I can't speak. I know a lot of you are struggling with this, and I just don't want you guys to get in your own way. I want you to see that it's not as hard as you think and that you can do it. So I will step off my soapbox for now and have a great rest of your week, you guys. I will update you on my New York trip when I get back next week. And yeah, if you want to rate and review the podcast, comment on YouTube, all the things. I'll love you forever and have a great rest of your day. Bye.
