Welcome to Cotton Quick Take by PCCA, your short weekly update on the factors shaping cotton markets and the broader agricultural economy. Thanks for joining us. Let's take a quick look at what's moving the market this week. This week, the cotton market's attention is centered on Wednesday's Federal Reserve meeting. While interest rates are expected to remain unchanged, traders will be listening closely for any clues about the Fed's outlook. At the same time, weather, export demand, and developments in Washington will continue to influence market sentiment. Last week, December cotton futures finished at 79.98 cents per pound, gaining 135 points. Support came from stronger outside markets, renewed weather concerns, and continued buying by investment funds. Even though scattered rainfall brought some relief across portions of the cotton belt, forecasts remain mixed, and weather remains the biggest driver as the crop moves through a critical stage of development. Drought conditions have improved, but West Texas is expected to see another stretch of triple-digit temperatures this week. I think the cotton market right now is being really responsive to what we're seeing in demand, plus the impacts from weather. The last few USDA export sales reports have been very underwhelming. And so it's putting us behind the pace needed to reach their estimate of 12.2 million bales. However, the daily reserve release options from China have been selling out, showing giving us positive signals and showing signs of life. On the weather side, much of the cotton belt is in need of rain, so we're hoping we get that in the next couple weeks.

On the global front, tensions in the Middle East eased somewhat over the weekend as the U.S. and Iran resumed talks, leading crude oil prices lower after last week's spike. Markets will continue to monitor the situation, as any renewed escalation could quickly affect energy and commodity prices. Separately, new Section 301 tariffs on imports from 60 economies took effect over the weekend, though the announcement also included tariff rate quotas for certain textile and apparel imports from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia that use U.S. cotton and textile inputs. While the provision is a positive step for U.S. cotton, the near-term impact is expected to be limited unless additional countries are included.
