SPEAKER_02Hello! And welcome home to Brits in the Magic episode 4. I'm Mrs. B.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Mr. B.
SPEAKER_02And today's episode is going to be all about heat. Which is ironic because we are currently in the middle of a heat wave in the UK.
SPEAKER_01We are currently sweating buckets making this episode. Yeah. Because we've had to close the doors, the French doors, the living room to make sure it's all the sounds kept in. And uh we're dying right now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And the number of people, I don't know about you, but the number of people who've said to me, But you go to Florida. And I've said yes, and it's exactly the same temperature. And they've said, exactly. And I've said, but the infrastructure just works better in Florida. It makes more sense.
SPEAKER_01We're not built for it in the UK. Our buildings aren't built for it. Uh homes aren't built for it. It's that it's that beautiful thing, AC. That is what we are missing. Aircon. Um, but yeah, so it is a weird one because, like you said, today's episode is all about how to cope in the heat, and at the moment at home, we're not coping. We ain't coping at all. Um, but hopefully, our tips and tricks today about coping with heat in America, especially if you have excuse me, a little one will uh do you quite well. Yeah. Um so uh we'll uh we'll crack into that in a few minutes. A couple of things to go over though, I think, before we start up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a couple of uh sad passings since the last podcast. Um the first one being Margaret Kerry, who was the voice of Tinkerbell.
SPEAKER_01Well, not the voice of Tinkerbell, the motion actor for Tinkerbell. Yeah, because of course Tinkerbell and Peter Pan.
SPEAKER_02Doesn't really speak a shade.
SPEAKER_01She had a a tinkle for a voice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um but yeah, she was the motion actor. Um and it was really weird because I've I've never seen any of the footage um from the film. Do you know when they have I've seen footage of Snow White, have you ever seen that where they and some of the older films as well when they were using um character actors? Never seen anything for Peter Pan until obviously she'd passed away and some footage came online. And it was really, really weird to see Tinkerbell in real life acting because it was it was the scene where she was stuck in the chest of drawers and she was trying to get out through the keyhole and they and the actress, uh Margaret Carey, was kind of in a makeshift keyhole trying to squeeze herself out. Um and the look of her as well, that you can definitely see they've taken some of her face of the younger Margaret Carey and and put it into Tinkerbell. Uh and yeah, that was that was that was really weird to see. But I mean I love I love Peter Pangor, and it was one of my favourite films.
SPEAKER_02This is one of my random bits of knowledge, PubQuack. I think it's probably one you told me. Do you know who the highest paid character in uh or cast member should I say uh Disney World is?
SPEAKER_01Go on. I think I know, but I want you to have the win.
SPEAKER_02It is Tinkerbell when she flies from the castle in well originally in Wishes, but now in Happily Ever After. Apologies if you can hear Pluto again today. Um and yes, the highest paid cast member in Walt Disney World.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you'd have to you'd have to pay me quite a lot to uh to to do that.
SPEAKER_02I mean, if anyone wants to discredit that fact, please do so. It might be amiss.
SPEAKER_01There's a cast member somewhere listening to this because I'm I'm I'm assuming they are. There's a cast member somewhere listening going, hang on a second, I get paid the most money. It's me. Um but I I have heard that fact before in in in some other places, so for my belief, yeah, for my belief, I I I think it's true.
SPEAKER_02I do also think you told it to me, so I'm just gonna blame you if it's not.
SPEAKER_01There could easily be a possibility of that. I I just say random stuff. And uh and then there's another.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I think I don't want to say sadder, but different because she was a lot younger.
SPEAKER_03Shock.
SPEAKER_02Lelo, or the voice of Lelo from the original Lelo and Stitch film, and this one I mean, she was very close to our age.
SPEAKER_01Davy Chase, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and oh really sad.
SPEAKER_01And of course, Lelo and Stitch came out when we were kids, like when we were properly young kids.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and that voice is uh a very, very recognizable voice.
SPEAKER_02And it's one of Little B's favourite films.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it is. He loves he loves Lelo and Stitch, the the animated Lelo and Stitch. Yeah, I don't think he's seen the live action one yet.
SPEAKER_02I think we might have seen part of it. We're not very good at the new films.
SPEAKER_01I'm a bit of a purist. I struggle to watch the live action ones. I've seen some of them, some of them I think are good. Yeah, there's definitely some good ones, and others I'm like, was that needed? Yeah. That the original was like the best and it doesn't need to be touched. Um, but yeah, I'm a little bit of a purist uh in in that respect. But yeah, you do realise, and some of our kind of like sharp listeners out there will realise that every two episodes we announce the passing of somebody.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We're we're a bit of this can't keep going on. Otherwise we're gonna be we're gonna be like the bad penny of Disney podcasts.
SPEAKER_02But also we're gonna have to pre-record some episodes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So possibly hopefully that doesn't jinx us in anyway.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Anyway, what are we discussing today?
SPEAKER_02So we're gonna talk about the heat, how you we can plan for the heat, what to do during the heat. Um I think actually the heat wave in the UK has reminded me of a lot of the stuff that we do in Florida to help. Um, one being not having to go to work. That's always a bonus.
SPEAKER_01Wearing shorts instead of trousers.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yes, definitely. Um, but yeah, we'll talk about planning, um, what to actually do when you're there, and almost how to acclimatise back to the UK a little bit as well, because that can be quite hard when you arrive really early in the morning home and you making sure you've got the right stuff coming home with you.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, absolutely. So we'll start with planning uh before we even leave the UK. Now, obviously, you American listeners out there, your climate's a lot different to ours anyway. You guys are much more used to the but also each state is different.
SPEAKER_02There are states that have a very similar climate to us, and you'll be having to think of the same things that we are.
SPEAKER_01But if you're from the UK, I mean obviously you might get some weather like this for a couple of days, but you you're not quite equipped for I think what hits you in Florida. So packing them.
SPEAKER_02So I find this quite useful because being from the UK, 90% of the time, this week being an exception and a previous week in the year being an exception, you can get away with wearing jeans. Even when it's warm, it's not to the point where you can't wear a pair of jeans. So packing wise, I find you can pack a lot earlier than perhaps you could if you were coming from a warmer climate, because you're not having to wear all of your shorts and all of your t-shirts throughout the weeks before packing for the holiday. Um, so for example, this year we finish work and we fly two days later. There's a lot of things that need to happen within that time frame that do not involve packing. So I will be able to pack, you will be able to pack a couple of weeks beforehand, make sure we've got everything, knowing that the clothes at the very least will not need to be used unless we have another heat wave between packing and going on the uh holiday.
SPEAKER_01So things are kind of like are a must to take then. The first thing is, and I know this sounds silly, but sun cream. Yeah, but I'm not saying just pack sun cream. I have seen people from the UK pack sun cream and they're like, I'm I'm packing factor 15.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, people that go on holidays where they sit by a pool and they can reapply every hour and they get a bit of a tan and they can sit in the shit and they go, Yeah, I I always wear factor 30, it's absolutely fine, I'll be fine. And on those type of holidays, and I do not advocate getting sunburned by any stretch of the imagination, but if you got a little bit red or a little bit sore, you could sit in the shade, still enjoy the holiday, still do what everybody else is doing. If you get burnt in Florida, you're done.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I on those type of blind by pool holidays, I'm all for wearing a bikini, I'm all for a sun top, that sort of thing. I know my shoulders burn. In Florida, I wear t-shirts because I know full well if I burn my shoulders, I'm done, and that's three or four days of my holiday ruined because I'll be in pain.
SPEAKER_01You are in pain now. That that's that's the thing, is it? You are in absolute agony if you burn. When we went last year, and and we always pack factor 50.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and always wear factor 50.
SPEAKER_01And we get a healthy tan. It's it's not like we do not tan, we get a really healthy tan, but we pack factor 50 in because it is hot. And last year we went to um Typhoon Lagoon, we put plenty of sun cream on before we went out of the hotel. We added a bit more uh as we got to Typhoon Lagoon when we were getting kind of like kits.
SPEAKER_02And we were over cautious last year because of having little B. Yes, far more cautious than we've ever been before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. And when we came out of Typhoon Lagoon and got back to the hotel and got showered off at the end of the day, you you remember I had a right burn on the back on my back.
SPEAKER_02My back was right.
SPEAKER_01Uh and and we said, Crikey, like we've put so much suntime cream on today, and it's still it burnt. And I mean, obviously, being in a pool anyway, the reflection from the water, it's always gonna be a little bit worse. But it was really, really bad. Yeah. Um, and like you said, if you're if you're putting factor 15 on and thinking I'll be fine for four or five hours, you're gonna know about it. And that's and that and that is your that that's two days, three days worth of pain, and and going around the parks like that for the next two or three days, it's just gonna be agony.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and that's the other thing. If you're on a sit-by-the-pool holiday, you can apply whenever you want. In Disney, that's a lot harder. If you're in a queue, you don't want to be applying sunscreen.
SPEAKER_01If you're trying to make it from one part to the other very quickly, for you've got a dining reservation, you lightning lane.
SPEAKER_02You do absolutely need to reapply in the parks, but you need to be aware that that might not always be on your terms, and therefore the bigger the factor, the better.
SPEAKER_01And you know what? You forget as well. When when some when characters start coming out of nowhere, or or all of a sudden you you get you you you're in front of the castle and they they start the show, and before you know it, half an hour's gone past when you were supposed to put your sun cream on, that's it. You're you're in you're in trouble, you're in you're in the pain zone now. So I know we said Suntime Cream. We're not talking about just suntan cream, we're talking about factor 50. Yeah, factor 50. If you want to do factor 30, go for it. You're gonna we're gonna want to put more on the normal, yeah, but for me, it's always gonna be factor 50. I burn, it just keeps you, it just keeps you protected, and it stops you having those few days of being in absolute agony and not enjoying yourself, and it's not the type of holiday that you go on to get a tan as such, either.
SPEAKER_02It's it's a different type of holiday to that, and it's not worth spoiling it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Hats and sunglasses as well are also important. Making sure you've got the the the correct level of UV sunglasses, really, really important. Yeah, making sure obviously your neck's covered as well. I mean, I've I've had all different kinds of hats. I find that the the the hat that's best for me is the one that does cover the back of my neck, um, and just give me that little bit of shade because again, it just makes me feel more comfortable. I hate hats, I last longer in the day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I hate hats, but in Florida I wear one every day. And there was one half day last year when I didn't, and I felt it, and I felt more dehydrated and more affected by the sun than I'd felt at any other point. Yeah. And I'd love to wear Disney ears, but Disney ears are not gonna protect my head and they're not gonna stop me feeling poorly. And again, sunstroke knocks you out for a couple of days, and that's two days of your holiday that you spent a lot of money on, yeah, wasted.
SPEAKER_01And it hits you out of nowhere. Yeah, you think you're fine, and all of a sudden you are not fine.
SPEAKER_02Little B has bucket hats because caps are great, but bucket hats cover the back of his neck.
SPEAKER_01Well, the thing is for a little one, sun tan cream, so much of it, the hats, the sunglasses, because he he can't do it himself. So you you've got to be on that constantly, especially with a little one. Now, something that we did take last time um for the first time ever was a cooling towel.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I think I used it a little bit more than you did.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm not a fan because I don't like my t-shirt getting wet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was a it was a game change. It was a gay I loved it. I loved the cooling towel.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um and then uh since ever since the cooling towel, I've seen obviously I've seen people wearing the the cooling fans around the necks.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01Uh, and I've always wondered, guys, like, will they work or not? And it just so happens that this week a friend of mine at work has brought in her cooling neck machine fan. Um, because of course it was extremely hot in the building. Yep. Uh and uh funnily enough, it's the one that she took to Disney last year because she was on holiday the same time as we were. Um, and she said, I said, can I try it? I want I want to see what it's like. And she said, Yeah, absolutely. And I tried it, and it's not bad. Like, it is like a really nice jet of air coming up and hitting you, kind of like under your chin, side of your face. Um, and it's not bad at all. She did say though, she said, I used it in Disney, she said, but I will say when you're in the middle of Disney in the middle of the day, she said, it's not as useful. She said, because it's it's warm air, yeah, hot air, warm air. Um she said, but it it was okay, but it wasn't as useful as she wanted it to be. And I thought, oh, that's interesting. Because I I've been toying with the idea, yeah, but for me, it sounds like I'm gonna stay with the um the cooling uh towel rather than the uh the electric one. But I know lots of people that swear by them. Yeah, swe swear by the um electronic ones.
SPEAKER_02And one of the other things as well, being the climate that Florida is, they have a lot of thunderstorms.
SPEAKER_01No, no.
SPEAKER_02I was thinking you say that, but there are so many people on Facebook and stuff who say, I've looked at the weather forecast and it's supposed to rain and I'm really concerned. Don't be. In the the time that we go, say the summer, um, the likelihood of a thunderstorm every day is really high. It rains, it thunders, it lightens, they are incredible. Um like they're absolutely spectacular to see, and then they go away, and then you can get on with the rest of the day. Like it's not it's not a big deal.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Some things that people pack are ponchos.
SPEAKER_01We don't I wouldn't say we don't pack ponchos, but we do pack um those portable raincoats that we can stuff away in a little bag.
SPEAKER_02We used them in Paris, we never used them in Florida.
SPEAKER_01That is true.
SPEAKER_02Because I think what we I should have done that one day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you should on video, but but I I didn't, and it was in the bag.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But there was no time. I was already drowned. What was the point?
SPEAKER_02What we found is that with the mixture of the heat and humidity and the air con, you dry off so quickly anyway. You do, that it's actually quite refreshing.
SPEAKER_01It is, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Rather than bad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is. But yeah, I I I think if you want to pack those ponchos, it's not the worst idea in the world, but I can guarantee you there will be times when you get caught short, and by the time you get the poncho out, it's already soaking wet. Because when it rains rains.
SPEAKER_02And the temperature doesn't drop when it rains. No. So you put your poncho on. If you've been caught in the rain and you're already wet, you put your poncho on, and then that's just creating condensation underneath your poncho because the poncho's plastic and you're getting hotter and hotter and hotter. And actually, there's no point.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The biggest packing mistake I have ever made, and we alluded to this in the very first episode, 12 bottles of sun cream.
SPEAKER_01Yes. We were we were uh we were very ready for the sun.
SPEAKER_02Um I got very paranoid about little bee.
SPEAKER_01But it was the first time we were taking him to uh Orlando, and we wanted to make sure that he was fully protected.
SPEAKER_02We've only got six this time.
SPEAKER_01We could have bathed him in it.
SPEAKER_02We could we could.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We've got six this time. Yes. And again, we have six because that's probably overkill as well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The shops, particularly at the Disney resorts, if you're not at a Disney resort, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, they all sell sun cream. You are not going to the middle of nowhere where you're not going to be able to get these things if you need to.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely not, absolutely not. Uh so we're going to move on to the next segment in a second. Again, I'm just going to apologize because you may possibly be able to hear in the background our dog Pluto has decided to stop barking and is now snoring.
SPEAKER_02This is the coolest room in the house.
SPEAKER_01He's struggling with the heat, bless him. He's he's an irritable boy at the moment. Um, so I do apologize, but he need he needs to he needs to snore in a uh in a in the coolest part of the house, and that is with us.
SPEAKER_02And actually, I think maybe that's something we should mention.
SPEAKER_01Well, Pluto's snoring in the house.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02Heat makes people irritable.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02And you need to take account for that when you're on holiday. Give yourselves a little bit more time. Don't be in a rush to do everything. Leave time to get to dining reservations. Yeah. People who you usually get on really, really well with suddenly will start doing things that grate on you that have never grated on you before. And you grate on because of the heat that you are finding yourselves in. The only major difference between sort of a heat wave in the UK and a heat wave over there is that air con and the fact that the rooms are air con, so you do get relatively good night's sleep, which has not been happening over here recently.
SPEAKER_01Um, but you've never grated on me more in the heat.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you're horrible in the heat. But honestly, like be prepared for that as well. You know, take if you're going with a different family, if you're going with friends, if you're going with parents, and you can take a little bit of time away from each other and just be your family again because you will the heat will tire you and will cause arguments.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it'll make you irritable.
SPEAKER_02You see it all the time.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, the the the the Disney fallout. Yeah. It's kind of like that's part of a trip.
SPEAKER_02We've paid all this money for this, and you will enjoy it. And you see families having those arguments, and you stand there and you think, yep, totally understand.
SPEAKER_01Yep, totally get where you're coming from. Yep. So, next part, how we plan a typical part day then, and not uh and this is not kind of like how we go around the park and do want to do certain things. We're actually looking at this from the point of heat and making ourselves comfortable. Because a a typical part day for us, I think we can cover it in so many different ways in different episodes. But we're just focusing on kind of like using the sun and heat to our advantage the m the best we can.
SPEAKER_02So I think the first thing that is a massive advantage coming from the UK is the jet lag on your first couple of days. You are automatically up early.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So rope drop and the kind of like the buzz as well. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Rope drop is far easier, those first couple of days while you were climatising to the heat.
SPEAKER_01Much cooler.
SPEAKER_02We do things like our first day, we do our sit-down meal in Air Con in the middle of the day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02To allow ourselves a bit longer break. As we get into the holiday and we get a bit more acclimatized, that changes. But that first day is usually Magic Kingdom, Crystal Palace at lunchtime. Yeah. So that we've got that definite break.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Uh I think um going to certain attractions first. Um so last time that we went, we knew that Tron would be very popular because it opened not long ago. So we We decide to go opposite direction. We don't have to do Tron that day. We can choose a different day to do it. We go in the opposite direction, we get a few rides done. Some of them will be uh in cool places, some of them won't, but we can get a few rides done. And then if we need to take some time after that to just have a cool down somewhere, you don't feel like all you're doing is spending your time trying to find somewhere to chill out and not doing any rides. You could get three, if you're lucky, four rides done in an hour and a half, and then take some time to just have a chill out. And like I said, having that lunch reservate reservation um like 12 o'clock, one o'clock, it does break it up nicer, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_02And I think now that we've been going for a while, knowing things like the jungle cruise uh queue gets very, very hot, so do that earlier.
SPEAKER_01That is that is not a nice one.
SPEAKER_02Things like that help quite a lot. Um loads of the queues are indoors or in shade, so making sure that we do those at an appropriate time of day. Um little things like walking through the emporium or walking through connections.
SPEAKER_01Again, my friend at work uh just yesterday was talking about the fact that they purposely start like once they got to the uh to the start of Main Street, as they're leaving, so kind of like uh outside the castle, they would go purposely through the emporium all the way to the end.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They don't want to buy anything, no, they just want that cooldown. But then they said, and all of a sudden we come out the other end and we've got bags in our hands.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that what I mean.
SPEAKER_01That's a brilliant marketing trade. That is fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Put the aircon in the shop that you can go all the way down Main Street.
SPEAKER_01That you can literally that you literally have doors, so you just pass from one shop to the next one to the next one. Yeah, and yeah, you're gonna buy something.
SPEAKER_02There's loads of places that you can do that.
SPEAKER_01So the Christmas shop, you can walk that's lovely in there in terms of like the cool yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um I'm trying to think in other parks. Hollywood Studios have got similar down there, main road, um, and then the road up to Tower of Terror does the same thing.
SPEAKER_01Um, we found last time, because we didn't we didn't we never really usually spend much time round there. Uh where Barnstormer is. Uh they've got that water player there. Yeah, the splash pad. Um and Littleby, he loved that there. Yeah. But I will not lie, Mr. B loved it too last year. That was very, very refreshing.
SPEAKER_02And the Moana one?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes, in fact, we'll talk a little bit more about that one later. Yeah. Um, but yeah, uh places like that, it it I'll just give you that little cooldown and it will refresh you enough that it keeps you going a little bit longer.
SPEAKER_02And just being kind to yourself. I mean, coming from the UK, and this is probably more than um American listeners, but we tend to go for a couple of weeks or more. You have 14 days to do everything. Do not try and do everything on day one and completely wipe yourself out for the rest of the holidays.
SPEAKER_03No point to it.
SPEAKER_02Our day one, we usually start really early because we're jet-lagged and we're up anyway.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And we finish sort of one o'clock ish after we've had something to eat. We go back to the hotel, we go in the pool, we may go back out to a park if we want to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, we'll come to that more in a little minute because that's almost like a segment itself. So we'll we'll cover that a little bit more in a minute. But you're absolutely right. Do not try and do everything in a park on one day. No, you're not going to be able to do it. I mean, no, you can, and I've seen people do it, and I think when I was little, guilty of doing it with my mum and dad once or twice.
SPEAKER_02Well, some people have to because of the time that they've got.
SPEAKER_01And and if you are not within that Disney bubble, and you might be at a hotel further away, or uh you might be um uh renting a uh a house.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh and you kind of go, well, we need to get it done now because we're not coming back later, or we've only got a certain amount of time. But I will say, most people it will wipe them out, and again, you're not going to be in good shape for the following morning. One final thing though, in the part before we move on to the next bit, and this is something that I think we've we've capitalised more on um since little bees come along, and that's character meet and greets um in in cool places.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01Um there seems to be more and more of those than ever before. I look back to when I was younger, when I was a child, there were so many meet and greets outside. You don't see that as much anymore.
SPEAKER_02And I can completely agree with that. Having gone from that fear of those characters, I was very, very much aware where they were, and they were not in set places, and that's what was one of my big fears. And that is definitely now now you've got Mickey in the town hall, you've got Anna and Elsa in the Norway pavilion, you've got all of those places where they are inside, they are ready to meet you, but you have to go to them in an air-conditioned building. You know.
SPEAKER_01I mean, for the characters themselves, I bet it's an absolute godsend.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, definitely. Um, so leads us into midday breaks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so we we we were touching on that just a little bit earlier on, but I think it's something that we both agreed, it's it's a section that is actually really important to talk about because there are like I said, there are some people that want to go a bit longer, and there are some people that are like all four midday breaks and and taking time away. And I suppose it's the question of how much do you want to get done and how much time.
SPEAKER_02And it can be really controversial because some people will be like, oh no, I'm not leaving the park, like FOMO and all that sort of stuff. Some people are like, Oh, I don't do a day without a midday break. And we were talking about this and we said we don't really plan for it as such. Yeah, we have a schedule, we have an itinerary of what we're doing each day. It does not include this time to this time. So, for example, day one, six o'clock till one o'clock, Magic Kingdom, one o'clock till three o'clock, pool, three o'clock till we are not like that.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_02But we have another big advantage of being from the UK is the 14-day ticket. The 14-day park hopper ticket with Memory Maker is one of the best things that happens to UK guests because we get 14 days for the price of seven, it's park hopper automatically. You it gives you that flexibility. So you can leave the park and go back in, and that's still only one day. And we just kind of go with the flow when it comes to that. We don't go in the pool every day. We do plan some days where we'll say we'll do Magic Kingdom in the morning and then we'll have a different park in the evening to see the fireworks or whatever. But it might be that we don't go back to the hotel between those two.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Some days we like going back and just having half an hour in the air con, freshen up, fill up the resort mugs, and then go back out. Yeah. Um some days we attempted to take little bee back for an afternoon nap.
SPEAKER_01That didn't happen.
SPEAKER_02That didn't happen. That's even less likely to happen this year.
SPEAKER_01Best laid plans went awry there.
SPEAKER_02He didn't even sleep in his pram.
SPEAKER_01No, he didn't. I think he fell asleep once in the entire holiday, and that was about two-thirds of the way through.
SPEAKER_02He's his mother's son because he has definite fear of missing out. But he was fine. He got through it.
SPEAKER_01So, in terms of like what are the benefits then of going back, uh kind of like leaving the the the the park at midday and maybe coming back later. Well, first of all, if you are at a Disney hotel, let's imagine you are in the bubble. The pools at your hotel are wonderful.
SPEAKER_02They're incredible.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I I've I've Port Olian's Riverside, Port Olean's French Quarter, and Animal Kingdom Lodge. I've but those are the three pools that I've been in. You've been obviously two out of the three, haven't you?
SPEAKER_02You've just um I had to rip that in there again, didn't you?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, I uh every chance. Uh it's it's just um Port Olean's French Quarter that you've not been in. But those pools, the main pools are great, and the smaller pools are good as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they that tends to happen in a moderate where they've got like different buildings. You get the smaller pools.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that we've been in two of the smaller pools at Riverside, haven't we?
SPEAKER_02But a moderate or a deluxe hotel, they all got a slide.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The main pools have all got lifeguards, there's beach bars, always life jackets for for the little ones as well, uh all different sizes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and that's at all the little pools as well. Yes. The little pools haven't got lifeguards, but they've got the life jackets.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02Um the the big pools tend to be near the quick service, so you can use your resort refillable mug and fill those up.
SPEAKER_01So so that break there, there's there's loads you can do to kind of cool down, chill out, but still have loads of fun. Um the fact is well, like if you are going out somewhere in the evening, you might have a reservation somewhere, uh, and it could be near a park or at a park and you want to do the fireworks in the evening.
SPEAKER_02We plan for some of that.
SPEAKER_01We do, but it gives you chance to, if you don't want to go to the pool, go back, freshen up. Yeah. Uh that shower is just like amazing. When you've been in that heat all day, that shower's lovely. You get it.
SPEAKER_02Just taking your makeup off for 20 minutes and just redoing it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but getting some fresh, dry clothes on because you've either been rained on or more likely than not, you've just sweated through everything. Getting some fresh clothes on. Again, it's that thing about it it peps you back up and ready to carry on.
SPEAKER_02For little bee, yes, he might not nap, but half an hour lying on the bed, doing some stickers, watching a bit of TV, not in a park, riding rides, thinking about characters, massively overstimulated by everything that's going on.
SPEAKER_01I was literally just gonna say it's that break for him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And he he doesn't get emotional very much, more so now than he did last year, probably. And he doesn't get overwhelmed. But even a child like him who copes quite well with that sort of thing, still needs that break.
SPEAKER_01And the and the heat is a massive factor.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's a massive factor. So yeah, so that break for a young child, I think, is more important, and I think for the next few years when we go to Disney, we'll probably have more breaks than we may have done in the past.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I wouldn't, as a first-time visitor, you know, one and only trip. Yeah. Everybody's one and only trip until it's not. Um you want to do everything, but trust us you are gonna get to day four or day five and start thinking I can't do this anymore. And actually just pacing yourself a little bit more, have your must-d's each day, but your must-dos for each park can be split up over the holidays.
SPEAKER_01You've spent a lot of money on that holiday. You guaranteed you will have spent a lot of money on that holiday. You want to enjoy it.
SPEAKER_02It's got to be a holiday as well as 14 days at theme park.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely, definitely.
SPEAKER_02And that's the difference. Don't come back needing a holiday from your holiday.
SPEAKER_01However, I will now flip it and say, well, actually, what are the negatives of leaving midday? First thing is, you are guaranteed, Mrs. FOMO, uh you are guaranteed to miss out on something. The three o'clock parade.
SPEAKER_02But again, we plan that in. We say, right, this is the day we're gonna do the parade. Every other day we're at Magic Kingdom, we don't need to do the parade. We don't try and stay for the fireworks, they are planned into which day we will do it. Now, we do it early enough in the holiday to allow for the fact that if they are cancelled because of the weather does happen, we can do it later on.
SPEAKER_01But what I'm saying is, and and I know how we plan it, but what I'm saying is, if I'm if I'm being devil's advocate, there are things you're gonna miss out on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And if you don't want to miss those things, leaving, and I when I say midday, I'm not meaning like bang on 12 minutes. Yeah, one or two o'clock. But if you're leaving early, if you're doing kind of like a half a day in a park, you're gonna miss things. And if you don't want to miss certain things, it you're gonna have to almost suck it up, buttercup. Yeah. Like you you you're gonna have to make sure you take advantage of those cold places that we talk about about in the world.
SPEAKER_02Unless you get further and further into your holiday, it might be that you wake up and think, you know what, I'm really tired this morning. I'm gonna have a morning by the pool, and then I'm gonna go in in the afternoon and do the parade and stay till fire and that sort of thing.
SPEAKER_01If you if you really hit it hard those first few days, yeah, you're probably gonna have to you're gonna have to take those breaks later on. And you can do that, and I know people that do do that, that that really hit it so hard so fast the first maybe four or five days, and then have to have that little bit of a break later on, and that is absolutely fine. There is no right or wrong answer. No, we tend to pace ourselves a little bit more, yeah. But I know the people that go all out and then have that break later on in the holiday.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if we would pace ourselves as well if it was our first time.
SPEAKER_01No, probably wouldn't. Probably wouldn't. And we didn't know we were going back and maybe if we were going for our first time, we would kind of do some research, listen to a few podcasters, hear about some tips and tricks. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02I mean, we've already talked about the fact that we're not fussed about not doing Tron this year and not doing Guardians of the Galaxy this year because we know we're going back in the future.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, I'm totally not fussed about not being able to do those things.
SPEAKER_02I think if we didn't know that, we might feel slightly different. I'm fussed. I know you are doing that.
SPEAKER_01I'm fussed. Okay, so moving on then to our favourite ways to cool down in parks.
SPEAKER_02Now we've kind of spoken about some of these a little bit earlier.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02So we've said air conditioned shops, walking through them, splash pads, yeah, particularly Epcot and um Magic Kingdom.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, knowing when it's simply time to go, you know what, I'm done for today.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um we're gonna need to come back another day.
SPEAKER_01What about um indoor rides? Because there are some really good indoor rides.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and again, taking advantage of those.
SPEAKER_01Frozen is a lovely one.
SPEAKER_02Great, and most of the queue is indoors for frozen.
SPEAKER_01I yeah, I do not mind the queue for that at all. Um, although the first bit outside, we have been outside for frozen when it didn't seem like it was not moving for a while, um, and we were thinking this is it, this is the end, we are going to die here. Yeah, and then all of a sudden, inside, as soon as you get through those doors, you're like, hey, I can do that 40 minutes, make it 60.
SPEAKER_02The land pavilion, ratatouille.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that is a good one as well.
SPEAKER_02Um they're rolling up cart anywhere else.
SPEAKER_01Soaring. I mean, obviously that's inside. Yeah, yeah, that's that's um avatar.
SPEAKER_02Long cue, but most of it is inside.
SPEAKER_01Lovely and cool in Avatar, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Navi's a little bit different.
SPEAKER_01That's like No, I don't like Navi. Hybrid. Yeah, inside outside, it's a bit harder. The heat, the heat gets in, it is it's it's not nice. I don't like it. It's very much um similar to um Big Thunder Mountain.
SPEAKER_02Dinosaur was inside.
SPEAKER_01Dinosaur was inside, yeah.
SPEAKER_02One that I struggle with, Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. That outside bit of that is so warm.
SPEAKER_01It is. It is when that when that is busy and you have to queue from outside, it's a it's a bit of a stinker.
SPEAKER_02Midway Mania?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02Inside, yeah, yeah. Slinky dog outside. It's really tough.
SPEAKER_01Slinky dog. So I think I think the two that are the worst for me are um Big Thunder Mountain.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that is so horrible.
SPEAKER_01That is horrible, horrible.
SPEAKER_02Worst in Paris, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01When I say horrible, I love the ride. Like one of my all-time favourites, but the cue there is horrible. And um uh I can't remember what I was gonna say my other one was. Uh it'll come back to the case. Jungle cruise. Oh, jungle cruise. I didn't even think of jungle cruise. That's number one. Jungle cruise is because the water as well and the plant life, that is horrible.
SPEAKER_02Tiana's on the whole is not great, apart from that one little passage where you walk into it, you're like, this is blissful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I I do well, I say I do. We do try and get obviously it used to be Splash Mountain, it's now Tiana's. We do try and get that one done as early as possible. Because if you do get caught in the cues of that one and you are outside, you are gonna know about it.
SPEAKER_02But again, you dry off afterwards as well. So even when you do it in the morning, you still dry off by the time you get to your next ride. Oh yeah. We once went on Splas Mountain at the time, about 20 minutes before a dining reservation at Be Our Guest.
SPEAKER_01We did.
SPEAKER_02And we were like, what are we doing? This is ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because we got soaked.
SPEAKER_02We got absolutely soaked. And I kid you not, from walking to Splas Mountain, from Splash Mountain to be our guest, what, 10 minutes? Yeah. Because there were only two of us at the time, we were dry.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, bone dry. Bone dry.
SPEAKER_02Because I was genuinely concerned in that queue that they weren't gonna let us in.
SPEAKER_01And that's also about but but also going back to packing at the beginning, let's let's bring it full circle. Going back to packing at the beginning, you pack clothes that you know are going to dry easily.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01If you if you pack things that really kind of keep the moisture in, you are going to suffer. One, you won't dry as fast after being on a on a wet ride. Yeah. And two, when you sweat, it will lock that moisture in, it will smell, and it will, it will rub, it'll be uncomfortable. So it's all about packing the right clothes as well. But yeah, we were we were completely um bone dry.
SPEAKER_02Who do you think copes better with the heat?
SPEAKER_01Me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, 100%. I think I'm worse than little B.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I cope I cope better with the heat.
SPEAKER_02I I hate the heat.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you're not you aren't bad, bad, but I cope better with the heat.
SPEAKER_02Um I'm usually the first to go, we need to go into aircraft, or we need to stop and have a drink.
SPEAKER_01One thing we've not talked about in terms of like when the heat gets really bad, and the only reason I'm bringing it up now is because actually, I think it was the it was the one time on the holiday when I and I'm talking about the last one we went on, but to be fair, it hits me every time when I did not cope very well, and that was waiting for the three o'clock parade. Yes, um and it can and we were outside the Christmas shop last time, and you kept having to go in, yeah. Um, and we we were with my mum and dad as well, they were having to go in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Did you go in at all or did you tough it out?
SPEAKER_02I toughed it out.
SPEAKER_01You toughed it out that time. Yeah. Um, but that was painful, and I tell you where it hurt the most. My feet. My it was like it's like the- when we wear sandals, wear good, good, hard, like wearing sandals, good, yeah, walking sandals. But the heat was so it was almost a dry heat that was.
SPEAKER_02It was like the time we were waiting outside Animal Kingdom for an Uber, and you could feel it coming up through your sandy.
SPEAKER_01It was rising up, but it was hitting down as well. And for that 20 minutes when we were having to wait for the parade, yeah, and we couldn't lose our spot either because we were we were we were right at the front, so we could see everything. You didn't want to lose your spot, and those 20 minutes were long, and I had to keep going into the Christmas shop, my mum and dad had to keep going to the Christmas shop. I am stunned that you didn't, I because like you are I like I said, I cope better in the heat than you do, but that day you you toughed it out that day. But I really, really struggled that day. But I struggle with um the parade, midday parades anyway. I don't like them because if I'm standing still, that's that's when I that's when I'm hit worse, and that's when I get really irritable.
SPEAKER_02That's reminded me, actually, about one of the things that we haven't mentioned. Um Little B was in a pram last year. We are taking the pram with us this year.
SPEAKER_01Even though he probably doesn't need it as much now. He's kind of he's kind of on the board line, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, we've said little things like we've said we're gonna check it in when we check all the suitcases in rather than taking it through to the gate, but also full days in the park. Yeah, he needs in the heat. You can purchase somewhere to sit. Can we, Mickey and Minnie? Yeah, yeah, you can.
SPEAKER_01You can, but we're taking it with us because we know he's gonna get tired. He still fits in it, which it is good for us.
SPEAKER_02So that in itself is a w a heat defence. But I know what you're gonna say. But we bought a UV umbrella.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02So we could always make sure that he was in shade. Um and he Oh, he would move it around, he would tell us to put it up, he would pull the sunshade down.
SPEAKER_01When he first got there, he was not impressed. He was not a fan of it. By day three, he was like, put the put the umbrella up, please.
SPEAKER_02I need my umbrella. I haven't done my umbrella.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he needed it. Yeah, absolutely. And he wanted it. Yeah, he didn't. He did. But he I he coped better than I thought he would in the heat.
SPEAKER_02He was a little rock star.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Because again, we we had this theory that he'd get tired really quickly, that he'd probably nap. I was a napper. My mum uh tells me all the time that. uh going for meals. By the time we got to a meal, I'd be asleep on the table.
SPEAKER_02I remember saying to you and having the conversations with your mum and dad and saying he will not nap because he is very like me in temperament and I have massive FOMO and he was not going to Oh he has FOMO. Yeah and he was not going to nap on that holiday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah he has he has he has FOMO. He doesn't want to miss a thing that goes on. Exactly. Um but yeah he he he like I said he crashed once and I think that was on a boat on the boat going from Disney Springs back to Port Orleans.
SPEAKER_02Yes. And it was almost as though he knew he wasn't going to miss out because he knew we were just going back and it was like I'm going to let it take me.
SPEAKER_01But he crashed once. But we're we're taking the pram again and we are getting ourselves a brand new UV umbrella because it got so much stick on that holiday.
SPEAKER_02Yeah it it still it started to break a couple of days before the end it started to break it lasted us but we we left it behind because and I mean we were not careful with it the pram has to go down every time you go in a bus and it was like sticking out some stick with the weather as well like that that thing it it it it got its use.
SPEAKER_01Two two weeks of solid solid work every single penny. Oh absolutely absolutely so we are coming to the end of the episode which means it must be you know what it is quick fire questions. Yeah quick fire question round uh again since it's tradition uh I'll let uh Mrs B go first um I've had a a lot of feedback from last episode people were quite impressed that your answers are getting a little bit faster see um there is a lot of hatred for you about the ice cream Mickey bars though can it get worse today yeah I've got a I've got a feeling um but uh yeah we'll we'll have a go at the quick fire questions then so question one favourite Disney ice cream or frozen snack what is it I and this is this is not even properly Disney failed already but outside Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway they did big and I mean like sharing pots of strawberry lemonade sorbet oh yeah did you have that last time?
SPEAKER_02Yeah yeah I remember and it was so refreshing and it was one snack credit and it was a massive pot I'm gonna have to say that like value for money wise and how refreshing it was and it just hit the spot.
SPEAKER_01But again it brings it back to the things that just make you carry on a bit more it's that one thing that could be through yeah it it it gave you another couple of hours of being able to get through stuff.
SPEAKER_02I no I get that I appreciate that best air conditioned attraction then I'm gonna have to say living no the land pavilion because you can go from a couple of rides you can do soaring you can do all the seas with Nemo friends for the same reason the seas because you can do the ride the Nemo ride you can do Turtle talk with crush you can look at all the animals you can spend a good hour in there without feeling like you've wasted loads of time in air con.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um best ride to cool down on carousel of progress ooh that is a good one.
SPEAKER_02Not that we're gonna be able to this year.
SPEAKER_01Yes um why not?
SPEAKER_02Is it down so no they're refurbing it do you not know? I'm a good name I know I knew it was being refurbed in itself I knew it was being refurbed I thought it'd be back open by the time we went there no they're changing it all it's going from the they're doing a 80s 90s midnight of the new millennium and then like a future and then Walt will be at the beginning I I knew most of that I did know most of that especially with Walt but it's closing on something like the 5th of July Mrs B I don't like change.
SPEAKER_01I know I don't like change and it's not opening till 2027 it doesn't sound like a great big beautiful tomorrow to me. Somebody else said that anyway anyway next one then one item that you uh never visit Disney in summer without sun cream that now that was quickfire. Um what's your hottest ever Disney memory?
SPEAKER_02Either the parade stood outside the Christmas shop or waiting for the parade at the top of Main Street in 2015 or and we did we tried doing that on day one that was silly we shouldn't have done day one or waiting for that Uber and it literally coming up through my shoes.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm okay um morning parks are evening parks both but just not in the middle what a cop out answer that was uh what's one heat tip you give to every first time UK family don't try and do it all all in one day pace yourself. Yeah I think that's fair I think that's fair okay favourite Disney ice cream I know this one already I've said it before and I'll say it again Mickey Mouse ice cream bar why can't why can't people just see it? Why can't people just see it? It is important to me and I will get that out to the world best air conditioned attraction best air condition uh air conditioned attraction I'm gonna go uh the seas with Nemo friends yeah best ride to cool down on I'm gonna go with Great Big Beautiful tomorrow yeah the carousel of progress you just copy me uh one item you'd never visit Disney in the summer without my hat yeah stood one and uh the uh last holiday I lost my hat for a little bit didn't I yes that was the whole thing wasn't it Mrs B I f I got it back you got it back my my hat my lucky hat that I've had since uh being a teenager and I gave it to you for what two seconds and it was gone in the wind.
SPEAKER_02But we knew exactly where it was and we got it back.
SPEAKER_01We were lucky but you did get it back well done but we were very very lucky to get it back thankfully um cast members on Ratatouille yes thank you so much big plug for uh to you guys um but oh uh but for because I had to I did buy a a cap didn't I did buy a hat because about the 20 yeah the 20 minutes that I did not have a hat whoa I felt it yeah that was not nice really really uncomfortable so I would say yeah my hat.
SPEAKER_02What's your hottest ever Disney memory?
SPEAKER_01Um it is uh not one with you sorry you're out uh it's one with my parents and it is leaving Disney at the um oh transportation ticket centre thank you transportation ticket centre waiting for um the Lynx bus yes especially when the Lynx bus is late yeah that is hell on earth waiting there that is really really awful awful so yeah that's my hottest Disney memory morning parks or evening parks morning parks I find that the in the whilst I love watching the shows and stuff like that the humidity ramps up even as the sun goes down and that humidity can sometimes be worse as we're finding out at home right now it's not the heat that's bad it's the humidity because it just ramps everything up so yes I agree but I agree but the fireworks oh spectacular makes it all worth it but that hour that you are waiting beforehand you you you just want to die.
SPEAKER_02Yeah um what's one heat tip you'd give every first time UK family um something that we've not mentioned long enough bring bottles of drinks to refill um and if you can use the metallic ones that kind of keep or you keep the cooling yeah one thing we did last year which was genius go to a quick service when you get in the park and ask for a cup of ice yeah and we filled our bottles with ice you can get free ice water and ice at any quick service or like any um not concentration stand but a stand that's within a building fill your water bottle with that have stayed cool for ages all day long all day long the water can taste a bit swampy so we bought those little um ribena but it doesn't have to be ribena Robinson's like you know those any good concentrate will do concentrated cordials and just have those in the bag and just put those in every time yeah because it um I mean I've never had a problem with the water I love a bit of swamp water I like whatever whatever people drink there I'm gonna drink it but I know you're not a big fan of it and also it helped it helped Little B massively and it and it just it it breaks up the taste as well doesn't it like it it gives it just gives you something a bit citrusy.
SPEAKER_01But yeah I will always say bring some water bottles with you that you can refill and the metal ones are the best ones because they'll keep that heat in like you said and especially if you put some ice in it will be cold properly cold all day long.
SPEAKER_02So I asked Little B what his top tip would be for somebody going in the heat you know what he said go on then Moana's splash pad he loved it there.
SPEAKER_01He stood on the things he moved himself off they squirted him in the face I mean I don't think he was expecting that to happen if I'm honest I think but then he did it himself again knowing it would happen. Because it kept him cool yeah but I tell you who else loved that last year who I didn't I didn't yeah my mum yeah absolutely I mean my dad loved it as well but my mum absolutely loved that and again here's the reason it got a call yeah it got a cool and it was something fun it was new because we've not seen it before it kept her cool so that leads us to the end of the episode we keep saying we're gonna try and make this like 45 minutes and we're we're never 45 minutes. This is again roughly about time that we finish it as usual. I know sorry I do apologise but I will never stop fighting for a Mickey Mouse ice cream box never stop fighting so we're gonna come to uh kind of like the outro now um I'm gonna say things same things as usual if you uh have any questions or want to give us any top tips we would love to take some top tips from you please email us we still get hot yeah email us at britsinthemagic uh that isn't let me just rephrase that britsandhemagic at outlook.com I do apologise the links are also in the description so if I get it wrong it's right there we're also on Instagram we are uh lots of people are now following us on Instagram so it's really nice yeah really nice and before the next episode yes this will happen if I put it out into the ether it will actually have to happen Mr B has to Mr B will create for us a YouTube account and put the podcasts up on YouTube.
