Studio owners Mr Bill (Nautilus Studio) and Yves LF Giraud (Studio M31) interview Tomoe and Moe of The Moetones and Goathead, (part 2).

SPEAKER_01

I know you're still a band and you you can still do gigs, you do less. Probably sixteen, seventeen years.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah, I mean and we had a good run, man.

SPEAKER_01

The fact that I'm telling you you guys are legends here is very simple to prove. There is another band that is absolutely phenomenal in the area that has a song about the Mother.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that would that would be little brother. Yes. I see we grew up with those kids when they were actually kids. Yeah. They were so young.

SPEAKER_00

They were so young, and then there was an even younger member in the band. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I just You know about that, right?

SPEAKER_00

I just told him I'm going to win. Yeah, I know. They just they were just they needed so much like care.

SPEAKER_02

And to watch Kevin grow, he's like a phenomenon. I mean, I thought we'd have been a killer drummer. Uh but but Kevin has like grown so much, man. That dude is.

SPEAKER_01

I tell him everything, you know, it's just a lot of people. I would love what we got. And I just got everything from Bill, so I don't know. No, so uh so do how did it happen, by the way? They just decided one day to surprise you and have a song about your you guys.

SPEAKER_02

I have no idea. Okay. Yeah, it's just one day, and that was back during the Mr. Happy days. Uh I don't I don't think you were here during Mr.

SPEAKER_01

Happy.

SPEAKER_02

Mr. Happy is kind of what kicked this whole musical thing off. Dave, uh Dave Chisholm. Uh well you did.

SPEAKER_00

You are the one who really, really they were asking, looking for someone who would um be interested in hosting live music in their uh business. And then Mr. Happy was uh one of the very first people who Mr. Happy. He really supported live music.

SPEAKER_01

So his nickname was Mr.

SPEAKER_02

Happy or No no, Dave Chilly ran a he had a a bakery bar restaurant called Mr. Happy.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_02

And uh it was where Gustavo's is now.

SPEAKER_00

Oh and uh it used to be okay, so this this whole town it was uh where it was where where where the uh the La Casita is, but that used to be Blondie's at one time.

SPEAKER_02

And then it was then it was Mr. Happy's and Blondie's moved down to where it is now. And then Mr. Happy moved to where La Casita's uh is where uh Gustavo's is now. But Dave welcomed, you know. Uh I remember like our one of our first gigs was at Mr. Happy's when it was down at the La Casita place and it was outside. And uh did it have a space for the patio patio.

SPEAKER_00

No, you built the stage, remember? No, he built he builds the stage at the like he so he Well he had a lot to do with it. He wants to he wants to like play the music, so he talks to the business owners and then uh yeah, Blondie's um Patty and then uh Patty uh Simmons and then uh Mr. Happy David Susan. Well those are the very first ones who believed in Mo. And then uh they would like to.

SPEAKER_02

Blondie used to have a stage that was like, Do you remember Blondie's when they had that big stage? It wasn't that tall. Oh, that was in the middle. Uh but I convinced Patty like years ago, like, man, you need to move this because it was in a weird place. You know, there was the front and then there was the stage and a little walkway, and then the bar over here.

SPEAKER_00

It was like a bottlenecking the middle of the people. It's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

And uh we finally convinced her to move to the front where it is now, you know. We built that little it's yeah, it's a lot, it's a lot more, you know, yeah lower to the ground. Uh okay. So and I prefer I prefer playing on stages, even if they're like, you know, that high off the ground, rather than just on a concrete floor, you know, on glasses. It does.

SPEAKER_01

Don't you come on a stage? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You harmonica player.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We have a lot of harmonica players in the very case.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, but there's a thing about inviting as opposed to having to defend the stage.

SPEAKER_00

Sometimes you have to uh everybody get the chance and then you know after a while they might get no, but yeah, yeah, of course.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and that's up to them. Yeah, yeah. That's up to them. Of course. Yeah. Uh always. So the um good head. What can you tell me about these guys? You guys. Well what how did that happen? Who who came up with hey, let's put a benchmark.

SPEAKER_02

So here's what happened. Uh I started a little thing with Bobby called Tombo called the Harvester.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And we we played at the zoo gallery and it was like pretty cool, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and then Yeah, me and then Bobby, like, we played we and Bobby played at the parties and all, like, we played for a long time, and then one day let's just kind of have a trio together.

SPEAKER_02

And we did, and then and then I remember Willie saying, like, I at one point when I first got to know Willie, I want to be a harvester. And it's like, you know, okay, come on in, you know, come on in. And uh I've always you know, I always wanted a piano player for years and finally found Jurgen. You know. And then he he left and then he came back, and then you know, it's all it's all good. I've always wanted a fiddle player in the country or the bulkier stuff. And uh I I so last nickel played at The Wild Edge and we went in song and then for some for somebody said, you know, well that that girl plays fiddle. And I'm like, oh wow, and I think I was kinda drunk that night too. Do you remember that night? When I went up to meeting, I was like all excited, like, you know, man, you want to play in a band, blah blah blah blah blah.

SPEAKER_01

And she was like, Yeah, yeah. No, no, no. You just not do it.

SPEAKER_02

She was just yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, maybe it was playing with a hook.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I didn't see them then. I didn't see them then. Uh and then I lost her number, didn't have her number. So it was like, you know, because you were drunk. It probably. And it took a while to being a rock star. It took a while to finally, you know, figure out sleuthing, you know, I found out where she was, got in touch with her. And uh that's really how Goathead was born. Uh, you know, we all know. Well, actually it was me and Willie and Mimi first, and then, you know, we asked Bobby because Bobby's just I mean, Bobby's been around forever and he's a you know killer, killer human being.

SPEAKER_01

So uh one of the last times, man. He didn't have me showed up. He was really on there. She's brilliant, man. She's uh very, very accomplished. What she does on piano too. Uh piano, guitar, songwriters.

SPEAKER_00

She can really sing. She can sing.

SPEAKER_01

I know. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So we're you know we're lucky to have like zoom out all these talented people, like Sonny Gable, you know. Yeah. Uh very talented. Very talented.

SPEAKER_00

Very talented and hard. They they work out their art very, very hard. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And she's got a full a full uh job, uh Bethany L job and the kids and and the family to run and all that.

SPEAKER_02

Well, she still travels. She's uh she's one of the few people in this area that actually, you know. Yeah, you know, I'd love to do it too, but I don't know, you know, I could you know, is it's I love I love traveling, you know. I just love it on the road. And I you know, with with like you know, a duo or even solo, it's a lot easier than like traveling with a band. Yeah. You know, with a band there's it could be just a nightmare or it could be very beautiful.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But uh I mean I've been I and like in in Arizona around the Cottonwood, uh uh well, what's the other uh Jerome, that area. There's a whole like thriving little music scene up that way. And I keep I keep threatening like I'm gonna drive out there one of these days.

SPEAKER_00

It's close enough to be out there, and then uh you know there's a lot of camping that we can like but you know the price of gas these days, man, it's kind of nuts.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know if I can't.

SPEAKER_01

That's the only thing, unfortunately. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't think you know, 450 a gallon, you know, and the car gets good gas mileage, but I don't I wouldn't want to, you know.

SPEAKER_01

No, once in a while it can be really fun. Um it depends on how 'cause I I I've got friends that do it full time. That's all they do. That's you know, I would love to do that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'd I would love to do that.

SPEAKER_00

It's been my dream actually to like you know, make it small, like duo, trio, and then uh follow the farmers' market and then do that and down the house.

SPEAKER_02

I was gonna where were you on the night of I'll never tell.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know about that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, she can uh neither uh uh confirm or or deny without the approval of the secretary or whatever. Um manager. I would love for you guys to do a song.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Can we do that? Sure, cool. Well, uh let's take a quick breather. We're just gonna reset a few things and grab your guitar and uh maybe we'll I wrote this back in Franklin, Virginia.

SPEAKER_02

Uh back in uh like nineteen ninety five when I was uh on the run from the Texas authorities. We won't get into that one either. Uh Darden Darden Jones.

SPEAKER_01

See? We may have to talk about it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, uh I spent some time at Quebec too.

SPEAKER_00

Uh you were on the run in Quebec too?

SPEAKER_02

Sort of, sort of. I didn't have to go back.

SPEAKER_01

Uh you can leave this out of the that's all I'm gonna actually uh put up there. All that buttons.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, that's fine. I've warts it all, man. Uh anyway, Uncle Darden uh from Franklin, Virginia. Are you ready?

SPEAKER_03

I guess.

SPEAKER_02

One, two, three. Uncle Darden's got a garden in the backyard. He tends to their plants with tender care. It is a trade, not afraid to stay right here. With the church with a card, and I wore the red card. There it's prank. Second street. Good job, baby. That was awesome.

SPEAKER_01

Uh let me ask you something. So uh is there a gig or something coming up with Goatheads? Oh, old.

SPEAKER_02

Well, Goathead, we got uh Feb uh June 20th at the at the Makers Brewery.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_02

And there's gonna be at at some point in August at the Enterprise. Okay. That's August 30th. That's August 30th, yeah. It's just really hard to get everybody together. Everybody at the beginning.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and even as you said, you know, we mentioned how much talent there is here, how many bands, how many uh performers. There are less places than you wish there were that you can play at.

SPEAKER_00

Unless I really think that the they could twice in the season summer. It's it's yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh and then back to a gig the motones we're gonna be doing one this year, uh with uh for Eric Nordstrom uh North North Fest, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, which is a good thing, you know. Uh cancer research. September September 18th, I think. Yeah, something like that. If I hadn't turned off my phone, I would I I could look it up. Uh at the end of this month, I will be she's gonna join me at uh 11th Street Station in Durango. Which is always a kind of fun little gig, you know.

SPEAKER_00

It's Sunday afternoon, so it's a Sunday afternoon thing.

SPEAKER_02

And then we've got a quite a few of them like later on, starting in like uh July and August. That's a nighttime thing, the Thursday night uh Vail too? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. We're trying out duo these things.

SPEAKER_01

Well, uh we liked it, so I think you got something there. I think that's a good thing. Yeah, yeah, you guys will be able to do it.

SPEAKER_02

Perfect, and you can practice at home and make more money.

SPEAKER_01

And uh that's true too. The money stays in the house. One call, so less gas. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

No, that's that do it.

SPEAKER_01

And anything else, uh maybe some any anything interesting happening in the future besides beside gigs?

SPEAKER_02

She's going to Portland in July.

SPEAKER_01

What are you gonna do about it?

SPEAKER_00

Um I'm a nanny.

SPEAKER_01

What is it that you don't do? Let's go.

SPEAKER_00

I'm a nanny like recently. This is some some new gig I picked up, and then uh I love these children. And they're cool kids. They're really cool kids, and then they are I it's so wonderful to watch them grow and then be a part of it.

SPEAKER_01

You know them from here and they moved up to Portland?

SPEAKER_00

No, they're taking a vacation in Portland and you're gonna come along and her daughter lives in Portland, so she didn't know. Okay, excellent.

SPEAKER_02

And I'll be here all by myself. Oh, poor mom.

SPEAKER_00

We tried to get more out there, but he he now he has a weekly thing going on at the Dolores Reality. Oh yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you'll be involved in that. Oh yeah, yeah, the spotlights. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, I wanted to I wanted to pick like five days when he can fly and then come join us, but it's just fly anymore.

SPEAKER_01

I have to admit it's it's one of those things I don't enjoy it anymore. I used to.

SPEAKER_00

It used to be like amazing to fly, but now it's like you're like.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it's terrible.

SPEAKER_01

It makes you want to play harmonica or the flute. Man, look at the triangle.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. They they look at your gig bag and you got all these like effects and they're like, what is that? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Kinetic. Yeah. So um uh very quickly, you were mentioning Spotlight. Can you can you say a few things about that? What what do you do there?

SPEAKER_02

What what's the I don't really do anything. I run sound, you know, I actually uh I advertise, I run sound and I pick the people, uh which you know you will be one of 'em.

SPEAKER_01

So so you don't do anything at all?

SPEAKER_02

I just kind of like you know set the PA up and you know, and try to do sound as best I can, you know, and 'cause I'm not really a I I'm deaf, so you know the perfect person you want running sound is the deaf guy. The deaf guy, yeah. You know. But there's plenty of people that help me, you know. They I get the like, you know, third uh turn down or you know. Uh and it's you know, every every Tuesday night at the DRB. It's a free thing, but we do ask donations.

SPEAKER_01

So it's at the DRB every Tuesday night, you all be in the world.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Martin gives us a little stipping, you know, and then uh and then we collect tips and you know.

SPEAKER_01

Um guys, uh love having you. It was awesome. And uh unless you want to say one more thing about something I did. Oh, I don't know, Bill.

SPEAKER_02

I'm just grateful that I live in this area. Yeah. A lot of good musicians.

SPEAKER_01

Uh good place to be. Good place to be, yeah. And don't tell anybody, yeah. Keep it quiet. We've already told it. What part of Indiana are we in India? In the foreign field. Oh, and you smile at me.
