Welcome to the Telling on the Teacher podcast. This episode is called Dog Down Lockdown.
SPEAKER_00There's a teacher at our school who always seems to break the rules. Telling on the teacher, would you?
SPEAKER_01It was the end of break time, and the kids were coming back into the classroom after their lunch, and there was a young man in room three, and he came up to Mr McMahlow. His name was Jacob and he said, Mr McMahlow, Mr McMahlo, my ball is popped, my ball is popped. Oh dear, said Mr McMahlow. How did that happen? A dog bit it, said Jacob. A dog bit it, said Mr McMahlow. How would a dog bite it?
SPEAKER_02Well, it got kicked over the it got kicked over the fence. Oh dear, said Mr McMahlow. How did it get kicked over the fence? It was TJ. TJ did it.
SPEAKER_01Oh you did it too, said TJ.
SPEAKER_02Well we both did it. And and now it's popped.
SPEAKER_01Oh dear, said Mr McMahlow. So the the dog went and got the bull.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the dog went and grabbed the bull. There was a dog on the other side of the fence, and he found our ball and he got it, and he bit it, and it popped, and Sophie was gonna try and help us get it back. And she got some sausage from her lunch. She got some sausage from her lunch, said Mr McMahlow. Yeah, yeah, and she fed it to the dog through the fence. And the dog did drop the ball, and then he ate the sausage, but then he picked up the ball again. He picked up the ball again, said Mr McMurlow. Yeah, he got it again, and then and then he found the hole under the fence where where Jamie had been digging a hole underneath the fence with the sandpit spade.
SPEAKER_01Jamie had been digging a hole underneath the fence with the sandpit spade. Yeah, yeah, we thought we'd filled it all in, said Jacob.
SPEAKER_02We really thought we'd filled it all in and the hole wasn't there anymore. But the dog found it, and he was kind of a small dog, he's kind of hairy, and he's he managed to get under the under. He sort of digged with his front paws a bit and got under the fence.
SPEAKER_01Um and then he got under and into the fields, and then he started chasing us. He was chasing you, said Mr McMahlow. Yeah, we think he wanted some more sausage, but then the music started to play, which meant we had to come back to the classroom. And so we we all came back to the classroom. And so where was the dog? asked Mr McMahlow. Well, he was chasing some kids, and they were kind of screaming because they were scared, even though he's only a small dog. I guess he's kind of big to the really little kids, and he was around their bags, and I think he maybe he wanted some more sausage. Oh dear, said Mr McMahlow. Just then they heard a sound of a bell. Ring ring ring. Why's the bell ringing? asked Jamie. Ring ring. He kept going ring and then stop, ring and stop. That's the lockdown bell, said Jackie. Oh yes it is, said Mr McMahlow. Quick, everybody, get on the floor in the middle of the classroom and lie down on your tummies. Ring ring ring. The bell kept ringing while Mr McMahlow walked over to the door, locked it, walked over to the windows, closed them. Zoop. He went and collected his laptop computer and lay down on the floor with the kids. What's a lockdown? asked some of the kids. We haven't done this for ages. What's wrong? Why do we have to do this? Well, it means that something dangerous is outside, said Mr McMahon, and so we have to keep away from the windows and keep down to keep everyone safe. Some of the kids were getting a bit worried and a bit upset, and some of them were just rolling round on the floor being silly. Be still, please, said Mr McMahlow. Calm down, just sit down, just lie down here, and we need to do the roll to make sure we know who is here. So Mr McMahlow did the roll to check who was there, and everybody was in room three, except for Thomas. Where's Thomas? Um said Mr McMahlow. Oh I saw him at playtime, said Jackie and and Jamie. Don't know where he is now. Okay, said Mr McMarlow. I'll have to send a message to the office to say that everyone's here, but Thomas is not here. Hopefully he's gone to another classroom because that's the rule in a lockdown. Just go to the classroom that's closest to you. And as he was writing the email, Mr McMarlow saw that he had got an email from the principal. Oh, I see there's an email here, said Mr McMahlow. It says that the lockdown is because there is a dog on the school property and it might be dangerous. He was chasing some kids, so there is a lockdown to make sure everyone is okay. That must be the dog that was chasing us, said Jacob. Yes, it probably was, said Mr McMarlow. How long is this going to last for? said Hudson. Some of the kids were getting a bit upset and crying, and and some of the kids were getting twitchy and didn't want to have to stay still. Well, we don't know. We've got to stay here until Miss O'Connell comes to tell us that everything is safe and we can go. Hmm shall we have a look on the security cameras to see if we can see where that dog is? Are you allowed to do that? asked Jacob. Well possibly not, said Mr McMahlow, but I think we should do it anyway. Do you want to have a look? He brought his compute brought up on his computer the screens that showed the security cameras, and there were different windows on his screen, and if he clicked on the window he could go in and see what was happening in different parts of the school. Oh look, look, there's the dog, said Jamie. He's got he's got black curly fur and his tummy is a bit saggy. He looks like quite a quite a well fed dog. He's fat, said Hudson. Yeah, and he's sniffing around the bags, said Sophie. He's sniffing around my bag. Oh look, he's he's trying to get the sausage out of my bag, said Sophie. Oh look, there's Thomas, said Mr McMarlow. What's Thomas doing? Doesn't he know it's a lockdown? He's going over, he's patting the dog, said TJ. Hey, what's he doing patting a dog during a lockdown? He shouldn't be patting a dog unless he knows the dog. Oh the dog seems pretty friendly, said Jamie. Yeah, it's following Thomas, said Jackie. And they could see that the dog was pattering along, um running along behind Thomas back over to the classrooms. Oh, wonder where they're gonna go. Oh look, they're coming towards our classroom, said Mr McMahlow. And they watched on the screen as Thomas walked um back over to room three, and the black, hairy dog was following him. Patada patter patter patter patter patter patter until they heard a knock on the door. Knock knock knock knock. Oh that's Thomas, he's at the door. Mr McMahlow walked over to the door and opened the door so that Thomas could get in. But just as he opened it so that Thomas could get in, the dog jumped in the classroom too.
SPEAKER_03Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof.
SPEAKER_01But the dog, like he was saying hello to all the kids, he rushed over to the kids who were lying down and started licking their faces. Uh said Sophie. And he started jumping on them. Oh stop, get down, said Mr. McMahlow. You can't have a dog in the classroom. Out, what get out, dog, out, out, out. But the dog didn't want to get out. The dog was having lots of fun. It's okay, said Thomas. This is my dog. Um but um I'm not sure how he got to school. This is your dog, said Mr McMahlow. Well, there's a lockdown at the moment. Quickly get down and get your dog down as well. Woof woof woof woof woof woof This is this is my dog, and his name is Harry. We call him Harry Scary, but sometimes we just call him here for short. Hey, here, here. Come here. Sit here, sit here. Oh, that gets confusing, said Mr McMahlow. Sit here, here, here, here. Sounds like you're trying to be in charge of some old official meeting. Here, here. No, I'm not, said Thomas. I'm just trying to tell here to stay here. Sit here, lie down here, lie down, here, lie down. Finally here was lying down and stopped barking. Enough for everybody to calm down. Oh Mr McMahlow had to get out his phone and say, think I'd better ring up Miss O'Connell, the principal, and let her know about this. Uh ring ring ring ring. Hello, this is Miss O'Connell. Mr McMahlow, why are you ringing me? Don't you know that this is a lockdown? Oh yes, said Mr McMahlow. I do know it's a lockdown, but I I just needed to let you know that there's a dog in our classroom. A dog? In the classroom? said Miss O'Connell. How did a dog get into the classroom? Well, I I I had to open the door. Open the door, said Miss O'Connell. Don't you know that we keep the doors closed during a lockdown? Well yes I I was, said Mr McMarlow. But then I had to let Thomas in. Oh I'm coming down, said Miss O'Connell. Stay there, everybody. So everybody had to wait for Miss O'Connell to come down. Are you in trouble, Mr McMarlow? said Jamie. Well, maybe just a little bit more than usual, said Mr McMarlow. Soon they heard the clop, clop, clop, clop, clop. Sound of Miss O'Connell coming towards the door. She got out her keys to open the door, and that is when Harry Scary saw that there was somebody at the door and went racing off barking He probably thought it was his house and he had to welcome the person who came in. Miss O'Connell clicked the door with her key and opened the door and got barked at by Harry Scary. said Miss O'Connell, trying to get through the door. And as soon as she'd got in the door, Harry Scary ran out. Miss O'Connell locked the door. What? Was that was how what um yes, said Mr McMahlow. That is Harry Scary, and he managed to get into the classroom. Oh dear, said Miss O'Connell. Well, the dog animal control people are on their way, and so they'll have to collect 'em, and then we'll be able to get out of this lockdown. Oh no, said Thomas. Please, please don't let the animal control come and collect him. We we might not never get him back. They might take him to the dog jail. Well, they have to come and collect him, said Miss O'Connell, because we can't have a dog running around the school scaring the children. Oh please let me just go go and go and collect him. He'll come with me. I can take him home, said Thomas. Sorry, I can't let you do that, said Miss O'Connell. The whole school is in a lockdown. Thomas was about to cry. Mr Marlowe said, Come on over and um let's have a look at the cameras to see if we can see where he is. The cameras, said Miss O'Connell. You have the school cameras on your computer? Oh, said Mr McMarlow, um Yes he does, said Jamie. Come and have a look. They all crowded around Mr McMarlow's laptop computer and looked at the cameras. They could see on the different windows the different places in the school, and they saw on one of the windows that Harry Scary was running out to the school gate, but the school gate was closed. They could almost imagine him barking as he was going along. And then they saw him run back towards where the bags were. And then they saw him trying to get into Sophie's bag. He's trying to get into my bag again, said Sophie. His nose was in there and he was getting his paws and he was scratching at the bag. And then there was something in his mouth. He's got my sausage. He's got my last sausage, said Sophie. Well, having that sausage in his mouth, then Harry Scary started running off towards the school gate, which was still closed. But then we saw from the classroom, the kids saw that there was a van coming down the driveway. Oh good, said Miss O'Connell. That will be animal control. They'll collect this dog and we'll be able to get out of this lockdown and back to our learning. But the driveway was quite narrow, and there was a gate at the end of it, and the gate had to click open for the van to get through, and it was one of those automatic gates that slides along. It takes about twenty seconds to slide open. Click, you could almost hear the gate click and open slowly, and as soon as there was a little gap, Harry Scary zoomed out. The person in the van saw that the dog was running out of the school gate and jumped out the window of the van and started chasing Harry Scary, but he tripped over on a bush that was just outside by the path and fell over with his stick and the rope that he was trying to catch the dog with. Harry Scary just went woof woof and trotted off down the rest of the driveway, licking his lips from the sausage. The dog, animal control man, got up and tried running after Harry Scary. But Harry Scary was just running quite fast down over towards the path, and then they couldn't see anything more on the computers. Because the dog and the animal control man had run off the screen. Oh, I hope he doesn't I hope he doesn't catch my catch hairy scary, said Thomas. I wouldn't worry, said Mr McMahlow. That hairy scary looks like he can uh he can handle anybody from animal control. I think he'll probably have run back home. I hope so, said Thomas. I want to go home and see if he's got home all right. Well, I have to go and cancel this lockdown and let all the other classes out, said Miss O'Connell. Mr McMarlow, I will be talking to you later. Oh dear, said Mr McMahlow. Are you in trouble again? said Sophie. I might be, said Mr McMahlow. It does sound a bit that way. But at least I've got a good idea for a song for our assembly this week. And so on Friday, Mr McMarlow and the kids had written a song about their adventures with the lockdown and the dog that came to school. It went a little bit like this.
SPEAKER_00Look at that doggy in the window. The one with the tummy that sex. Look at that darkie in the window. He's sniffing at all of our bags. Hey, he's eating my sausage. Get that doggy in the window. The one with the waggly tail. Get that doggy in the window. I do hope he won't go to jail. Cause I might not never get him back. Get that doggy in the window. The one who is just a little scary. Get that man jump out the window, but he can't catch a friendly dog hairy. I think we better have a dog woofing solo, something like this. Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof.
SPEAKER_03Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof I hope you enjoyed that story and the song that the Mr.
SPEAKER_01McMahlow and the kids made up for the assembly? This story was inspired because I really like the stories by Linley Dodd about Harry McCleary and his friends, and I wondered what would happen if all of the dogs from the Harry McCleary books came to Mr. McMahlow's school. I thought that that would be quite interesting, but too many dogs to handle in one story. So what if a dog like Harry McCleary came to the school? And I've had a few lockdown practices at school, and I wondered what would happen if there was a dog, and they all the kids had to stay in the class um while a dog was roaming around the school. And this one was a very friendly dog, uh Harry Scary, and um luckily the kids were able to help um get him out. And the end of the story was that Thomas found Harry Scary at his house um and gave him some more sausage for dinner. Thanks for joining us. I hope you uh had a great time. Look forward to you joining us again for our next story.
SPEAKER_00Bye.
