Introduction
SPEAKER_00I did fly to Scotland for nachos once.
SPEAKER_04Sure. I swear to God. Most important question: was it worth it? No. Hello, everybody, and you are very welcome to another episode of the Green Room Podcast. I am your host, Colin Regan, and joining me today are two wonderful guests, Justine Megan and Keen Griffin. Hi.
unknownHello.
SPEAKER_00Why were we both so quiet?
SPEAKER_04I was holding my breath while you do that intro. It was like an ASMR podcast. Hi. Yeah. Hey guys. Everybody, welcome back to the channel. Hey guys, how are you? Have you been? Really good. Yeah. How are you? I'm doing good. No one's a rose. Yeah, no, I'm doing good, thankfully. Had a busy, I suppose, week or a week and a bit on the last
Colin's Gigs
SPEAKER_04podcast. I said uh I'm not doing anything right now, but by the time this goes up, I'll have done a bunch of stuff. And uh in the past week I've been to uh Metallica, uh the mother pride block party, and I saw Florence and the Machine. So I've just been gigging it up the past few days.
SPEAKER_03No doubt who was best.
SPEAKER_04Uh who was best? Uh I suppose, yeah, Florence. I didn't do the math on it, but I think it was Kelly and I's 10th or 11th time seeing Florence and the Machine.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, insane!
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so when you add up like music festivals and then just like individual gigs.
SPEAKER_00I don't think I met my own granddad 10 times, Colin. Well also, you just reminded me I met you at the end of the Mother Pride block party on Saturday. It was really good though, wasn't it? It was so so good. Well you're sorry.
SPEAKER_04I saw Kane there, but I wasn't talking to Kane there. No, sorry.
SPEAKER_00I'm obviously the favourite then. Yeah, apparently.
SPEAKER_04Well, you did like skulk your way out of the crowd. I was like walking by and I just saw you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was a little bit like Mr. Burns coming out of the woods and it was like bah. Well, actually, he doesn't come out as threatening his audience.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but yeah. You're like, I'm bringing you love.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and you were just like bah I was like, Oh uh hey, just hey Justine, how's it going? So good. I feel like it's Christmas though. Like the lead up to it is always so good. I'm like, my mental health is in the bin, my wallet is empty, my liver is fucked. I'm nose driving right now, but it was so fun. It was great.
SPEAKER_04I mean, yeah, Peaches did a DJ set. So good. Uh there was Scissor Sisters was there. Amazing. Uh then there was yeah, Elaine Mae doing a DJ set, Jinx Monsoon was there part of the House of Wig drag show.
SPEAKER_00Was that the next day?
SPEAKER_04That was the next day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because I didn't do that one. I just did the Friday. I didn't do the Saturday. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03They were so good. That was my second time seeing Scissor Sisters as well. That was my first time. I seen them at Hoopla at the start of this month. Ah, and on the same night I got mugged. Oh but it's kind of a funny story. Well, it's actually not. Can I trauma dump?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, go for it. Sure, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03No,
Cian's London Story
SPEAKER_03I was leaving Scissors Sisters from London and it was like after a night out because we went out afterwards. And I was walking with my friends across the street. Apparently, phone snatching is really common. Yeah, very much. Yeah, yeah. And I knew I I work occasionally in London, so I'm very paranoid. Like, keep my phone because it's my identity. And I was walking at like 3 a.m. from a chicken shop, which are great. I don't know if you've been to them. We need them in Ireland.
SPEAKER_00Like really? What's the type of chicken? Is it like deep-fried KFC type chicken?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like sticky and southern and spicy. Chicken shop day, but Amelia's.
SPEAKER_04No wonder Amelia de Molneberg is now.
SPEAKER_03But when she before I had them, I was like, that's kind of rotten. Like, why is she in like that looks like a bang chipper? Like, I anyway. I was walking in front with my phone and I had a big, like, I'd say about 20 pounds worth of chicken, 20 pounds, the currency, I'd say with way more than that. No wait.
SPEAKER_00Or even like the heavy chicken up the road.
SPEAKER_03But I as I was walking across to my taxi, I was looking at my phone and some guy um like snatched out of my hand. No, he was he was running. Don't worry, that this is a good story. Okay. Um and as he went to snatch me, my friend said I I pulled the chicken out of reach and let him take the phone. Then I grabbed him by the shoulder and we were like wrestling on the ground. Your priorities were in order.
SPEAKER_00Did you wrestle on the ground?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I he I he ripped a shirt that said gay, horny, and depressed. And we were tussing on the ground, but I got the chicken and the phone back.
SPEAKER_00So he was gay, horny, and depressed.
SPEAKER_03No, that was me.
SPEAKER_00Oh sorry, I thought he was wearing the t-shirt. And I was like, I was like, that's like that's so bad. Like, why is he doing that to somebody?
SPEAKER_03Like hurt people, hurt people. Yeah, you know.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, you got the phone back?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, nice. Thank God, and none of my chicken was hurt.
SPEAKER_00I was just about to ask for the chicken. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You're just like, time for some celebratory chicken.
SPEAKER_00For a second, I like I pictured it like that the chicken went everywhere, and instead of having like two people having like a mud fight, you were having like a chicken wing fight. Like in the middle of the floor, we're like wrestling in the middle of all this chicken.
SPEAKER_03I it was completely unscathed, but for some reason I don't really when I got home, my friend said I laid out all the chicken in a line in the bag. I he was like, I think you were counting, I don't really remember that part, but um You were counting anyway. This time scene citizens was bad better.
SPEAKER_00This said a five-piece boneless banquet. There's only four and a half here.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, it was like it was uh double digits and chicken. Like it was.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, was it delicious?
SPEAKER_03It was delicious.
SPEAKER_00So you were kinda moped.
SPEAKER_04That is genuinely very prevalent because it's saying it's on bikes or scooters, and people would just be like, because they're just like either tourists or whatever, just looking out at the phone, then you wink. Um apparently at across across walks.
SPEAKER_03What are they called? Zebra crossings.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, people like hold their hand, you're meant to like turn away from the traffic because people just youink because they're sort of oh my god, or like people have like a big, you know, they're like ha top of their hand covering their phone, like so if someone does grab it, it's not gonna or yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Or get or just carry an iPad because they're harder to snatch.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Silly question, and I probably nearly already know the answer. When your phone gets robbed, clearly they can't get into it if it's locked. So they're are they just sounding like it's a little bit more.
SPEAKER_03I think they're hoping though, because you're on it when they snatch it that the phone is unlocked.
SPEAKER_04And mine was, so but then it was they just have to make sure to constantly use it so that it doesn't go idle. Like you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_03I was probably I don't know what window was open, but it probably wasn't safe for work.
SPEAKER_00But I'm glad you got it back. It was like a full circle story there. What do you think?
SPEAKER_04What's the news
Justine's News
SPEAKER_04is?
SPEAKER_00Uh I had an interview with a journalist yesterday. Yeah. For the crimes you committed after. For the crimes I committed, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh he pinned me down and he was like, What did you do? No, um he wanted to, he met me and was like, I've never met somebody who does comedy and is a lawyer by day. Let's write about your life. And I was like, that's mad. So I'm waiting to get that back and I'm not entirely sure what the publication is going to. I mean, I I've I have a small inkling, but I can't confirm it yet.
SPEAKER_04Okay, interesting. I thought I was gonna you're gonna be interviewed for uh Stephen Keane's phone that time and literally.
SPEAKER_00And then this guy, he was holding chicken, he was so distracted.
SPEAKER_04The perfect crime. Well, just obviously I mentioned uh Florence. I got this little wonderful
Colin's T-Shirt Story
SPEAKER_04t-shirt, right? Because I was like, I gotta go, you know, gotta get the merch. But walked in, saw the merch stand, I was like, oh, there's a few t-shirts there that I like. I was like, Oh, might come back and get some. And me and Kelly went to the Red Bull stand. Kelly's up there ordering drinks, and while uh sweating, there was a bunch of seagulls flying overhead over all the food stands, and immediately we're there like five minutes. A seagull just like shits on the t-shirt that I was wearing. I was like, cool. I was like, Well, like that's great. I know why I'm going back to the merch stands. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I was um 45 euro well spent. So I hate seagulls.
SPEAKER_00I saw a
Bird Banter
SPEAKER_00man nearly have his lunch dropped by one on South William Street yesterday, and he was eating a bambino's slice, and like he was too far away for me to like shout at him to be like, There's a seagull, like literally here, but I could just see the whole thing happening in slow motion. God, and the seagull like dipped and he didn't get the pizza slice, but by the time this all happened, we were then close enough. And I was like, Oh, I saw that ages ago happening. That's actually that's actually such a mean thing of me to say. I didn't mean to say it like that, but he was like, What?
SPEAKER_04It was actually like less help saying that than if you were like, Oh, look out!
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I was like, Oh, I saw that happening miles away, but yeah, yeah. Sorry.
SPEAKER_04Just decided not to help you at all. I just I just watched that happen, actually. So yeah. So I was actually really I was really hoping for the seagull there, to be honest.
SPEAKER_00I mean, no, I wasn't. A seagull gave birth on my roof a little while ago, like on the like I could see it from my balcony, like the under roof thing underneath here. Okay, and I watched the little seagull like be born.
SPEAKER_03They're kind of rotten, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00Ah, they're not. The baby ones.
SPEAKER_03I think the parents mog the babies. The parents have like gorgeous ombre beaks, like eye winged ladder, beautiful white, and then the baby looks like an ugly duckless.
SPEAKER_00I will give you that.
SPEAKER_03Cute in a very different okay, no, they're uh cute in an ugly way. Cute and an ugly way.
SPEAKER_00I love like shitsu dogs and stuff like that. Like they're ugly, they're so ugly, they're cute.
SPEAKER_03Like sorry, go on.
SPEAKER_00But just I don't like them because I think they are a scourge on Dublin City Centre. However, when one is born on your roof and you watch it grow and you watch it learn how to fly, I was like, oh yeah, okay, I redacted your honor.
SPEAKER_04And you're like, it's gonna grow up to steal a guy's pizza outside Babino. Oh my god, go get those chips, baby. It's very a very bird-based opening.
SPEAKER_03I actually forgot the guy who mugs me was dressed as a seagull.
SPEAKER_00Are you sure it wasn't just a seagull? You never know these days massive. They are huge. What do you mean? Oh, the pizza and the chips and all. What are they feeding them? Street food. Imagine it was just a bloke dressed as a seagull. Like, yeah, nobody's like some sort of stag dude or something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, good. Well, uh, yes, that does it for our very bird-based catch-up. We'll be right back after this. And welcome
Strangest Irish History - Introduction
SPEAKER_04back to part two of our wonderful little podcast here. What we're gonna be doing for part two is sharing the weirdest facts of our hometowns. So, yes, obviously, there's uh you know lots of places in Ireland, lots of uh history and culture, but there's also lots of weird little tidbits about all the places that we live. So we're all gonna share a little bit of an odd fact. Justine,
Justine - Dublin Round Tower
SPEAKER_04would you like to go first?
SPEAKER_00I would. So the place where I live has a round tower in the middle of the village that's there since like the eighth or ninth ninth century. And when the Vikings lived in that village and like I don't know, Rennet or whatever, to scare intruders off, they used to put intruders' heads on the top of sticks like years ago. And I just thought that was really freaky and really cool. And I only learned it today for this podcast.
SPEAKER_04Where are you from? Children like it, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So it's a round tower, and it's just like they just put put heads on pikes to like scare people more.
SPEAKER_00It used to be like a little Viking settlement, I guess. And there's a round tower still there that like you can go up and see it now. That's from like the eighth or ninth century, it's really cool. Yeah, but when I was small, I used to think obviously like it's Rapunzel's tower. Oh my god, she's up there with her long hair, and like found a key and ran home, being like, Mom, I have the key to Rapunzel's Tower. My mom was like, Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04It's like Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, and it's just like a head on a pipe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but yeah, I just think it's cool and historical, and there's a lot of like you can go and do a little tour of it. Um, there is like a round tower coffee shop underneath, it's all very gentrified now, isn't it?
SPEAKER_04I like it. It's things like that where they're old historical things where it's like come see the place where we used to put heads on sticks, get your nice little caramel latte just over there, and you're like, dude, dude, dude. Well, isn't this nice all bringing the kids, come on down. Yeah, Kian, what's yours?
SPEAKER_03I when you said
Cian - Hollywood, Co. Wicklow
SPEAKER_03round hair, I thought you meant Glen Deloc, because I'm from Wicklow. So I was I was like, oh shite. If we have the same fun fact, I'm screwed. Um I'm from Wicklow City, Wicklow Town. Um the city part of his mindset. Um Hollywood is in Wicklow. This is gonna be a reach now, okay? Because there's very few facts about Wicklow I could find. It's all good. The real Hollywood can't do Wicklow existed for centuries before LA Hollywood. And I think Wicklow has more links to famous Hollywood films than actual Hollywood.
SPEAKER_00No way! Did you make that up?
SPEAKER_03Um we're just fact. Let's go. Uh I just think I just I don't know if we're gonna just say whatever. Okay, well, my the fact is that it existed from 1192, which it was ages ago. Um, and the Garden of Ireland, i.e. Wicklow, has been the film and location for like loads. So Braveheart filmed in Wicklow. Everyone thinks it's the Scottish Highland is actually Wicklow Mountains, the Vikings, Loch Tay, the Guinness Lake, and most famously, maybe infamously, Lindsay Lohan's Irish Wish. Have you seen that? Yes, shit.
SPEAKER_04Oh it is bad. I haven't seen it, but I saw like one or two clips of it that just like do you know what?
SPEAKER_00Lindsay Lohan can have my firstborn. Like she does no wrong.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, she she is a good egg, and she actually drank in my local when she was filming it, and she looks
"Irish Wish" Talk
SPEAKER_03like a photo, yeah, which is a claim to fame for them, I'd say. But I don't know if like AI was around when that film was made, but I feel like it had to hatch with an AI.
SPEAKER_04When did it when was it released? Uh I don't know. I think that was like 2024, 2023, maybe was it? Sean, can you just Google when Irish Wish was the movie? 2024.
SPEAKER_02The production for the movie began in September 2022.
SPEAKER_04Okay, that's right. Yeah. Probably COVID or the writer's strike, Hollywood actor's strike.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I remember seeing there were a film outside the Project Art Centre, and I remember seeing pictures of her outside the Project Art Centre where they had a yellow New York taxi cab looking like she was still in New York, which was in Temple Bar.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna say, is it that? Or is it there's a movie called like Leap Day, where it's like someone a woman going to like Ireland or something to meet a fella or whatever proposes or something. But there's a wish, she wishes. No, no, no, no, no, I think it's it, I think it's maybe it's probably the exact same movie, just different names. But it's lots of that where it's just like, oh, I'm just gonna get a bus, and she gets a Dublin bus and like ends up in Cork or something.
SPEAKER_00Can I just argue
"Long" Drives & Flights
SPEAKER_00though?
SPEAKER_04Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00The bus from Dublin to Cork probably feels like a normal drive to an American person because it is so vast in America, and they love Ireland, and they but they'll do a three-hour drive daily, not a bother. Whereas I would do that three times a year, and like I'm not driving for more than an hour without a tantrum.
SPEAKER_04I know, yeah. You'll see that, like, you know, gigs where it'd be like, I drove eight hours to see you, I love you, blah, blah, blah. And it's like, I'm not spending the entire day driving, that's mental. No. When we went to LA, we got a uh Uber or taxi or whatever from our the airport to our hotel. We're like, oh, this would be grand. And it took an hour to get from the airport to and I was just like, that's insane. I was like, that's literally driving Dublin to Carlo. I was just like, what the?
SPEAKER_00LA traffic is insane, though.
SPEAKER_04It's mental. And it's the only way to get around. Uh, much like that uh SNL Californian sketch where all they do is just talk about how they got from A to B to C. It's just like if you don't drive, like you're yeah, you're goose, you're goose.
SPEAKER_03The Metallica concert was in another bird reference. The the Metallica concert, loads of Americans over for it. Like they traveled to Ireland for a concert.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but that's loads of people do that. When Taylor Swift was doing the errors tour, there was like people couldn't get tickets because it was a bunch of like Americans coming over to like go to each show or whatever. And it's like save some seats for the rest of us.
SPEAKER_00That happened a lot, like, and I think sometimes they were cheaper than what they were going over for in the States. So that for the extra couple of hundred quid they'd actually get a trip out of it as well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I suppose to be fair, we probably do that when like going to like UK or like Europe somewhere for a gig.
SPEAKER_00Oh, like I've done that with music festivals and stuff, they're so much cheaper in different countries. Okay, you just told me you're a hoopla!
SPEAKER_03Like I travelled 45 minutes to London, yeah, flying from I'll doing a long haul flight for a music concert. Yeah, not for me. I could like I cycled here in 15 minutes and I felt that for myself.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's too much. That'd be like if I was like, I went I went to Japan to for one concert and then and then came back home. You'd be like, Whoa, that's mental.
SPEAKER_03I went to Paris for a coffee light.
SPEAKER_04That's the equivalent in my head.
SPEAKER_00I did fly to Scotland for nachos once.
SPEAKER_04Show up.
SPEAKER_00I swear to god.
SPEAKER_04Most important question was it worth it?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_04What nachos were they?
SPEAKER_00They were these nachos in a bark and they were massive, they were like that size, and I seen them on Instagram, and I'm clearly a sucker for some sort of marketing.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Me and my ex-partner or my ex-boyfriend at the time were like, Fuck, we go to Scotland and get them. We did for the weekend. And they were terrible, and it wasn't worth it. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Priority, some some people travel to a different country to see Taylor Swift, and some people travel to another country just to eat some nachos, you know, in a pub.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah.
SPEAKER_04That's a risk.
SPEAKER_00I know, like, they weren't even like a like a good Mexican restaurant or something like that. They were just in a bar.
SPEAKER_04Some guy named Alistair was just putting some like tomato on some like Doritos or something.
SPEAKER_00Sweaty college kid at the back, trolling bat, like a lot of crisps in a bowl with too much sour cream.
SPEAKER_04Like, so
Colin - Carlow Castle
SPEAKER_04I'm from County Carlo. Uh, don't hold it against me, don't hold it against me. Um, but yes, I'm from the town of County Carlo. And obviously, uh Ireland has quite a lot of castles. You know, obviously, lots of people I think, you know, probably visit Ireland to be like, oh my god, I want to see castle, I want to see castles. I have a fun fact here about Carlo Castle. Uh, and it's uh an excerpt here from a book from 1992. This is an excerpt from The Guide to National and Historic Monuments of Ireland by Peter Harbison. The original keep of Carlo Castle was three stories high and was square in shape with stout three-quarters round towers at the corner, but only the eastern half still stands with its two corner towers and connecting wall. Having later passed into the hands of the Hamilton family, it was granted to a Dr. Middleton, who, in order to create more room for the building of a lunatic asylum in 1814, blew up parts of the castle. As a result, most of the castle had to be demolished as a safety precaution, leaving only the two towers and the adjoining wall of what was once one of the finest normal castles in Leinster. So I just love the idea of this guy decided to turn the castle into a lunatic asylum, and he used too much dynamite and blew up basically the majority of the castle. Which makes you think uh what happened to the population of Carlo uh in the in the years and since everyone is everyone from 1814 onwards just descendants of lunatics?
SPEAKER_00Because they had nowhere to be treated, or you know, uh you're just freely roaming, procreating.
SPEAKER_04Yes, and that's why we have you. Well I'm actually absolved of this because my parents are from Cork and Carrie. Oh so I I I I made it out of that. This is the thing. If you go to Carlo Castle, it's just one castle wall. So you could look at it and go, Wow, look at this majestic castle, and then you could just like walk around it and go, Oh, it's it's just a wall, it's just a wall, it's it's just a wall.
SPEAKER_00It's an illusion of a castle.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Carlo didn't get to break the fourth wall.
SPEAKER_00Oh, very good.
SPEAKER_04But
Colin Defends His Hometown
SPEAKER_04yes, this is the thing, you know. I think Carlo gets a bit of a bad rap, I think, because I think people say, like, oh, Carlo's just kind of like one of those towns you drive through, it's not really, you know, it's not much to it or whatever. But I think there's lots of Sir Carlo, you know, Sear Sharonen. Search like inertia. Search of like inertia, yeah, is Carlo Royalty, grew up in Carlo. We have the Foundry Nightclub, which is Europe's biggest nightclub. I don't know how you're gonna fact check that, but as a small I've heard that a lot. I don't believe that. Growing up in Carlo when all you knew was Carlo and you never even knew anywhere else in Ireland, you're like, wow, Europe's biggest nightclub is here in my hometown.
SPEAKER_00I think I've been in that.
SPEAKER_04You it's the only nightclub in Carlo, so you definitely have a college mystery tour. What a what a great mystery tour that is. We've been driving for an hour. I wonder where we end up. Carlo.
SPEAKER_00It's ringing a weird belt.
SPEAKER_03If you look up, you'll recognize the Facebook photos. It used to be like iconic photography. Iconic photography for someone from Wicklow. Because we only had one nightclub that closed as well. Um, Search's a good one. I feel like sorry, I should have mentioned Hosiers in Wicklow. Oh and Sinead O'Connor chose to live there instead of Dublin.
SPEAKER_04Well, you may know you missed your chance. You can't add any more facts, you know. Sorry, no, no, no. But here's the thing, Carlo, uh, we've the Foundry, Europe's biggest nightclub. We have not one, not three, but two cinemas.
SPEAKER_00Impressive.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and a skate park that took like 15 years to build. So just saying, Carlos got a lot going on.
SPEAKER_00A skate park that took 15 years to build.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I just remember like, I don't know, in the mid-2000s when I like attempted skateboarding for like three months. Uh, I remember being like, Oh, they're building a skate park, they're gonna be building a skatepark, blah blah blah. And then I remember looking it up, and I think it was built in like I don't know, it was like 2018 or something. That's so sad. Yeah, I know. Also, another uh bit of celebrity info is Britney Broske,
Brittany Broski Loves Ireland
SPEAKER_04of course, yeah, you know, YouTuber, comedian podcaster, extraordinary, has really uh enjoyed Ireland the past few years, has visited Ireland, I think has been to a lecture picnic, but she spent New Year's she spent New Year's Eve in Carlo, in a I guess castle, but I think it's more like a country house. Class. But she spent New Year's Eve in Carlo, and everyone was all the comments were just like, girl, what are you doing in Carlo? Caleb, Caleb and Drew, Caleb Heron, yeah, yeah, and Drew whole gang in Carlo. And yeah, it was just like everyone's like anywhere in Ireland, and you chose Carlo, but why not Carlo?
SPEAKER_00You said they were in a castle, were they in the lunatic castle?
SPEAKER_04No, they weren't in this lunatic castle now. No, unfortunately. But yeah, so that's the thing. No, they didn't, they they went to a place I think outside uh Carlo Town, uh a place called Boris. Boris Boris.
SPEAKER_00It sounds, yeah.
SPEAKER_03We we had Haggis and got shit on by seagulls. Like it doesn't sound it doesn't sound Irish. It sounds Scottish to me.
SPEAKER_00We had Haggis.
SPEAKER_04No, well, I no, as in he's saying Boris sounds like a place in Scotland or something.
SPEAKER_00Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. I was like, Well, where do you get haggis over here?
SPEAKER_04He was just combining my Florence of the Machine story and your Nacho story, and he just combined, yeah. I was like, Yeah, shut on my seagulls. Yeah, yeah, but yeah, it's just gas. I just love the idea of a guy being like, I'm gonna renovate this castle, and then just use probably like three times as much dynamite as he meant, and was like, Oh fuck.
SPEAKER_02Imagine Dermot Bannon doing that on Jim Bruce, just blowing the wall out of some house in Stony Butter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like the gas and stony butter worth 700 grand and wrecked it like for a fact there. We just got mortgage approved, Ervis.
SPEAKER_04Well, if there was home renovation shows in yeah, 1814, that that's the one I want to see. You know, I mean, it was all very, very wholesome stuff, you know. We had uh lunatics and we had uh heads on pikes, you know. Lovely, just like real family friendly stuff, yeah. Well, that's all our wonderful little facts about all our wonderful little hometowns. We'll see you right back after this. And welcome back to
There's Something in the Vents - Introduction
SPEAKER_04the final part of the podcast. What we're gonna be doing in my periphery. Everyone's doing little shoulder shimmy shakes there. But yes, what we're gonna be doing for the final part of the podcast is oh, you know that sound, you know that sound, me guys. It's time for everyone's favorite segment. There's something in the vents.
unknownOh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we really should get them looked at. I don't know. There's definitely something going on up there. This is a little segment for everyone just have a little bit of a rant or vent about something that's just been getting at them, getting their goat, just getting them really peeved off. Justine, would you like to go first?
SPEAKER_00Uh you could say no.
SPEAKER_04No, actually. Alright, fair enough.
SPEAKER_00I think the reason you want to go first is because I want to get real world up. I want to get real roll up, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03King, do you want to go do you hear that tiny little cracking more? So I thought long hard about this section the most because winging is so fun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um and I think there's a skill you need to be able to be funny at whinging or you can't wing because if you suck the life out of people, that's that's not good winging. Good wing is when people go, yeah, fuck those guys.
SPEAKER_01So true.
SPEAKER_03Two honorable mentions iCloud Storage. Don't understand how it works, it doesn't seem to work. I'm getting rinsed for money and I still don't have space. Um, and people slamming weights in the gym and being like, Oh, make it a bit grunty. Why do you sound like the gruffalo?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like, I'm overstimulated as it is. There's music bearing it so packed. Stop slamming your weights. If you can't, lift them down gently. They're too heavy for you.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03But the real rant is
Cian's Vent: People Who Think They're Too Good for Reality TV
SPEAKER_03people who think they're too good for reality TV, like to watch it. I'm kind of dipping in and out of Love Island at the moment, yeah. And so many people are so judgy about it. It's like, oh, it's such shit. I'm like, reality TV is actually a masterclass in like social science.
SPEAKER_00I think it's it's anthropology.
SPEAKER_03So interesting. Now, probably better example than Love Island, like the trailer, big brother, anything where there's like strategy and manipulation, social deduction. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04I know what you mean. It's like people just tearing it's like, oh, you like that? Oh, okay. Well, I'm gonna like this thing instead. It's like, well, we all just like our own things. Like, why does one have to be at the expense of another or whatever? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And we're like, especially Arch people, we're so nosy. People love like if there's a crash on the M50, there's the backup goes the whole way to wick because everyone slows down to like have a nose as they go on by. Everyone wants to be a fly in the wall. I'm just like, reality TV is class.
SPEAKER_00I love reality TV, like love, love, love, love, love. And I my mum loved it, so I grew up watching it. But I think with Love Island, it can be so reduced to these are beautiful people just saying whether they fancy each other not and having a little kiss, and it can be it can be reduced to just kind of a vanity project.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there's that much strategy, I think. In in the in the in the in the game of it, I don't think that maybe there's that much strategy compared to something like the traders, maybe where it's like are you actually different?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think there is a strategy in Love Island. So, like the the goal at the end obviously is to come out semi-famous a lot of brand deals for the next year or two. Yeah, but the actual goal within the game, which we all seem to forget, is like couple up and win 50 grand at the end.
SPEAKER_03Well, I always forget about 50 grand actually, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then the strategy at the end is they still get to split or steal at the very end. So it is a game show, yeah. But I think it has evolved to an extent that people know and they're always gonna split because they're not gonna know that they're gonna come out with bigger brand deals worth more than 25 grand and that stealing the 25 grand is gonna rule their ruin their public perception.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, reputation, yeah, yeah. Oh, like this if this feels very leo of me, I'm kind of getting to Star Sinn at the moment. I feel like I get away with it. I feel like I could grade the telly, take both money and get a villain edit. That's like, oh, that was kind of that was kind of silly.
SPEAKER_00Do you think so?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I'm delusional.
SPEAKER_00So you think you'd get the villain edit more so than you'd get the public to love you so much that they'd let you away with it.
SPEAKER_03So I think reality TV, especially the violent, has gone in such a route of people are so pure and trying to be like what they think the public want that we don't have villains anymore, we don't have like drama. Make reality TV fake again. Come on, real again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you remember like the early days of Big Brother and stuff? Oh chaos, and like some of the best characters Gemma Collins, Gemma Collins, like everybody like so unfiltered. Whereas now, actually, I'm also watching Love Island, and I said it in work today, everyone was like, How's your weekend? And I was like, Charlene Murphy went into Love Island and I'll arguably solicitors and barristers, fair enough. I'll turn around and went, What? And I was like, sorry, it's a big day, I've been waiting weeks for this, okay? But I think when I watched the uh Cassette Amore thing, the the guys were answering questions, and one of the girls said, if you watch it back, she goes, Oh, that's a very media trained answer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I picked up on that as well, and I was like, that is taking me so out of it. Because I'm like, God, they're really aware of everything.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there's it's like, yeah, why why why even add that mine in? Like, you could take it out and it wouldn't even wouldn't change much of the actual thing. Um, yeah, don't know. I mean, for my reality that I've watched is uh, I don't know, 40 of the 200 seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race. And there is endless drama in that. Uh, and then there's Untucked, which is sort of like the like after show kind of thing of that, where it's just like now, some I think more recently it has been very like everyone's a bit buddy buddy, but every now and then there will just be like people just like screaming at each other uh and just like getting all in their face and stuff.
SPEAKER_03Early years of that, yeah, when they were still like not monitoring how much alcohol they were giving people, yeah, and they were throwing drinks and it was like messy boots.
SPEAKER_00That was a thing with Love Island as well. Like the first couple of seasons they were allowed to smoke and drink as much as they wanted. Well, look, I I will also say I do think it's better that there are safeguards in place that people are like, look, we love the entertainment, however, there does need to be a certain duty of care around it. Yeah, I think I'm like people do things on the telly that then is there forever and it's in the public mind forever. Like, I'm gonna mention one person's name, McCosy, to you, and I'm gonna think about McCosy. Macosy from Big Brother. Okay, you weren't as big a fan as I was. But I was just gonna use that as an example of like that was 20 years ago, and if I mentioned her name to a few people I know, they'd go, Oh my god, yeah, I remember that, you know, and it just sticks with you.
SPEAKER_04Obviously, I don't know what's like I've never seen it, but like for those like real housewife shows, which are just like non-stop drama and legal things and all sorts, that might be the the further extreme of uh what maybe what you're talking about in terms of like we're setting sunsets as well.
SPEAKER_03There that's quite drama. I just think it's all great, and people should still be so judgy.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. You enjoy what you enjoy, but also I want more fighting. However, I
Justine Explains "MILF Manor"
SPEAKER_00will say, Ray, just like there's different levels of reality TV show, right?
SPEAKER_03Correct.
SPEAKER_00You have like the traitors, which is more game showy and like whatever, and then you have like ultimate, like really trashy reality TV, okay? And there's one that I have watched two seasons of that I think is on TLC, and it's called MILF Manner. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And it's a little bit like Love Island, where these young men go into a villa and they're all aged between twenty and twenty-nine, and they go to date these older women, and the spin is the older women is each other's moms.
SPEAKER_03Oh, right, yeah. Do they know that they're they know.
SPEAKER_00So the boys are like going in, they're all 20 to 29-year-old young men.
SPEAKER_03But do they know that it's gonna be a MILF?
SPEAKER_00They know it's gonna be an older woman. Yeah, but the tr this this twist is when they get there, they go, Oh, the older women are my mom and a load of other hot women in their 50s and 60s.
SPEAKER_04So then it's also just like you have to be like chatting up, and then while also like, yeah, you're being a pal where a son.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's wild and it's so gross. And you see these like 22-year-old men being like, Oh yeah, like I watched my 65-year-old mother get off with my other 22-year-old mate, and it's just awful stuff. But you're kind of watching it a bit like this, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03For a car crash TV, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um I do think, yeah, there's there's tears. Yeah, I think my my actually gonna my new statement is that all reality TV should be painted with the same brush, and it's it's not all trash. Exactly, but sometimes you need trash to just to take you away from other icks in life, and also just to make yourself feel a little bit better about your own life, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You're like, yeah, it's not so bad. I could be in a mansion trying to chat someone up with my mouth but like there'd be like there'd be a 40-year age gap, like yeah, look, whatever you're into, you know what?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So what's what's your vent?
SPEAKER_00My vent, like it's gonna get a little bit more serious from here. I'm sorry. But my vent
Justine's Vent: Ireland's Too Expensive
SPEAKER_00is like I think it was announced the other day that Ireland is the most expensive in Europe for housing, healthcare, electricity, and alcohol.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00The cuz he lives, babes, is destroying me.
SPEAKER_04That was that was cost of living for anyone who who didn't understand what you meant.
SPEAKER_00Because he lives, Gemma Collins just possessed me there for a minute. Well, as a result of that, like a lot of my friends have left the country. So they're in London, they're in Canada, they're in Japan, they're in whatever. When that had happened, had hoped it might be for a year or two, and then they're like, Oh, we're not coming back. Yeah, and I don't blame them.
SPEAKER_04No, it's hella.
SPEAKER_00It's hella there.
SPEAKER_04If you have friends who emigrated to London or Australia, Canada, whatever, and it's just like, yeah, well, why come back? Do you know what I mean? It's like what what's here to come back to? Do you know what I mean? Yeah, uh, yeah, it sucks like, and especially if you're like, oh well, I've already moved here and I've set up shop here and blah blah blah, but it's also like they probably have a better just like cost of living or even just like just in general, just a better day-to-day life than if they would back here.
SPEAKER_00Like yeah, they just have better like Canada, like they're renting apartments, like yes, they're expensive, but they also have disposable income at the end of the month, it's not completely suffocating them. Like there's one bed of apartments here that are in absolute abysmal state, and they're going for 2200 euro. I know, and then people are making 2500 euro, so hang on a live off three to it's ridiculous, do anything else. Like, it's so stressful. I went out for a couple of pints on Wednesday after work last week. And when I tell you, I had like four pints a bag of chips in a taxi home, yeah, and I spent 120 euro.
SPEAKER_03A jack seat.
SPEAKER_00No, honestly, right. I didn't like you know what I mean. My taxi was 40 quid home on its own.
SPEAKER_03Like taxis are like a tenor before you get into them there. It's true. I know, it's stupid.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like what I visited Carla like and no, this might be a couple of years ago, but even still, I gave your man a tenner and he gave me back change. And I was like, I was like, what no, this what no, uh this doesn't make sense. I've I've given you money. Uh why are you giving me money back? Uh I felt like I hadn't given him enough when I gave him tenor. But he was just like, yeah, no, blah, blah. Whereas yeah, in Dublin, it's like, like you said, before you even get in, it's a tenor, you're just like, it's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_00We were getting the taxi home the other day, and it was eight euro before we had moved anywhere, just four euro service charge, four euro for whatever. And it's like, I haven't moved an inch. I hate it. Eight quid. I know, I know, and like I would kind of love to emigrate, but there's parts of me that does love it here as well, and I have so many lovely things that are going on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That I'm like, oh, do I want to start a new life? I'm in my 30s, do I want to do all that? But like it just does cripple us. Like it's it's shocking.
SPEAKER_03You're right.
SPEAKER_00At the end, it's fair enough.
SPEAKER_03It's about in 10 year old bean slice for it to be snatched out of your hand a few seconds.
SPEAKER_00Why a seagull? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then even just having a having a pint.
SPEAKER_04You're just like, oh, well, hey, things aren't great, but hey, why don't I just go out and have a few pints? And then it's just like even the cost of a pint is going up.
SPEAKER_00Even the cost of a pint. Yeah. I remember back in the day when we were 18, I'd go out with 20 quid and I would come home with change.
SPEAKER_03And you have got a taxi home and food.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. There used to be a a night in my local nightclub with 2.50 drinks, and I would like that would be you, you'd have four of them. There's a tenner. You get your fiver taxi home with the girls. You get your fiver little chipper on the way home. Sorted. Make nights out of fiver again.
SPEAKER_04One of the college nights I would have gone to was Rock Metal Night. And it was 250 drinks. So, like, I would we would go there and I would hand over 10 euro and I would be given four strawberry lime copper bergs. And then I was like, Well, this is me now. You just have a grand old time.
SPEAKER_00Just like I honestly feel like I look, I'm working. I have a bit of dollar, like dollar bills. I'm not like well, I don't know how students are doing it. Yeah, it's just non-existent. Like, I don't even think there's any student really knights anymore. You never see anything like that anymore.
SPEAKER_03I know.
SPEAKER_00Maybe they are, and I'm just old and I don't see them anymore.
SPEAKER_03But like Or maybe that's why students aren't going out that much anymore. Because I feel like the younger generation are more like healthy and health conscious, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But then they're also like, you know, I don't know, like eating whole vapes and stuff. So I guess vaping in bed at 9 a.m.
SPEAKER_00I brought you in the mood, didn't I? I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_04No, you're right. Like there's a cost of the living crisis and a cost of the drinking crisis. And one of those needs to be fixed.
SPEAKER_00Immediately. Yeah, actually, I love the way the whole up conversation actually turned to just alcohol.
SPEAKER_04But you're right, people can't afford most things as well as discretionary things like pints. Like you might be like, oh, we don't need to go out, but like even if you wanted to, that's still.
SPEAKER_00And like I think like Ireland are such big drinkers because we can be quite a sad country at times, you know. So we like use it to numb ourselves a little bit. It's like, oh, we can't even do that. So well, actually, why don't you just take the shirt off my back? Like, sorry. I have this like metric in my head where I measure things in glasses of wine. So like if I'm like if I'm trying to buy something and I'm justifying buying something to myself, I'd be like, well, you'd buy three glasses of wine, no bother. So buy it.
SPEAKER_03A month's rent.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I'm not gonna pay my rent this month. I've got three glasses of wine to buy.
SPEAKER_04It's a fair metric. Yeah, so some people might be like, Oh, yeah, I can forgo that cup of coffee. But you're like, I'll forgo those three glasses of wine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, my wallet and my liver tank may work.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. My vent, and it's one I think we can all agree on. It's
Colin's Vent: People Playing Music On Their Phones on the Bus
SPEAKER_04people playing music on their phones on the bus. I think it's always been a problem, but I think post-pandemic it's I think gotten worse. And I think that what's made it worse is TikTok. It's not even people playing music on their phone and they're playing a whole song. It's people just scrolling through TikTok, and you're just hearing like the the start of yeah, you're just hearing like a here's my top 10. You're just hearing like constant, like two seconds of noise the whole time, and you're just like, oh my god, like I understand whatever social media, whatever is all rotted our brains, but you don't need to rot the brain of everyone else around you as well. You know, I know I know we've just talked about cost of living crisis, but like I think a pair of earphones aren't the most expensive things in the world that like you can you can get some cheapy 10 euro earphones from like PC World or something like that.
SPEAKER_00I don't think it's about the earphones though. I think COVID happened, everybody sat at home for a couple of years and kind of just forgot how to behave in public. Like it's uh it's just a level of in like inconsiderate or something. I don't know what it is. It's psychotic, it's mad, and like it there's been a change in people's behaviour since COVID. It's really weird. I remember I was on the bus a couple of weeks ago, a couple of months ago, and there was a couple sitting opposite me, and right in front of them was a kid playing all of his TikToks on loud. He must have been about 11 or 12, I'd say. And the couple very politely leaned over and they were like, sorry, would you mind just like turning that down and putting your headphones on? And he just looked at him and went, No.
SPEAKER_03Kids, the the kids these days, like honestly, though, I'm like the if I I would if as an adult now, if someone asked me to turn down my phone, I just throw it out the window. I'm so embarrassed. I would die. I'm getting off actually.
SPEAKER_00What do you want it actually? Yeah, like sorry.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'll get I'll just get another one. No, have you ever been on the like say you you're you maybe you thought your headphones are connected or something, and you play something, you just go like oh and you immediately turn down like the shame that like washes over me when that happens. It's like have these people know shame?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think about it for weeks, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_04Like, do you remember those like drink driving ads years ago that was like never ever drink and drive? Could you live with the shame? We need those, but for like people playing music, you know what I mean? You're just like someone's like playing music, and it's just it should have be a bunch of people being like, Oh my god, absolutely scarlet for him. Oh yeah, Jesus, look at him. But he's a small dick too. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03It should be they should get him in and be like, Why is he doing that? God, he's aware of it. Yeah, why is he saying those? What's he doing that for?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, why is he playing some of those tunes?
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03What about people on the phone? Do you mean as in talking on the phone? People having conversations.
SPEAKER_04Now, here's the thing for me would be like, Oh, uh, yeah, sorry. Oh, I'm actually just about to get on a bus. So here I'll bring it back, even though it's like you could, in a way, technically have a phone call, but I just like the idea. I'm about to get on a bus for other people, so actually I won't, I I'll I'll talk to you later. Wouldn't do that. Also, it depends what you're talking about. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01I don't talk on the bus on the phone.
SPEAKER_03No, no, music annoys me in a way that listen to other people's conversations do not. My airpods are like click pause, and I'm like, Oh no, phone calls annoy me more. Really? Yeah, oh no, what if it's gone?
SPEAKER_04Oh no, music absolutely annoys me more because I feel like someone talking, it's like they're if they're talking on the phone, they could have just been like it could have been two mates talking. Do you know what I mean? That in a way it doesn't bother. Now it depends also if you're talking on the phone, you're like, if you're talking loud, if you're just like, oh, actually, uh, I have a few that have to do this and that. But if you're literally just like, yeah, so anyway, the doctor said it's malignant or whatever, you know, if you're talking like at like a loud volume or something, that like you get on board with, but like, yeah, if you're just having a conversation, I'm like, well, you could have just been talking to a person beside you. I think that's okay. But like, if it was two people and they're talking so loud, I'd also be like, okay, that's egregious as well.
SPEAKER_00Like we were, yeah, we were on the bus a couple weeks ago, and me and my boyfriend were talking, and he'd only like he wasn't really familiar with the area, so we were going past the bus, and I was like, That's a nightclub I used to go into, and we're going past whatever, and like just give them a little tour and tell them all about it. And this man in front of us turned around to join the conversation, and he's like, Do you remember that nightclub, blah blah? But he was missing half an ear. I was like, How did he hear that now? Or is that how you lost it now? Someone pulled it off for being nosy. Face timing on the bus, another kettle of fish, yes, but weird, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then you're just like in the back of it, you're just like, Okay, I'm like a background extra, and you're FaceTime.
SPEAKER_00I had a woman beside me on the treadmill recently FaceTiming in the gym, and I was like, now that's an etiquette I've never experienced before. She was having a full-on on the treadmill walking in the chat.
SPEAKER_04Now it depends if it's angled, you know, against the wall or something, and no one else in the background. But if you're literally just like, okay, you're like uh effectively just like filming other people in the gym by that look. I'm like, that's mental. I hate people. But it's saying we're we're talking about like, yeah, just like post-COVID, people don't know how to act. I mean, at gigs as well, you know what I mean? You have people like I don't know, you have people with like ring lights in their phones and taking full things at concerts now where it's just like they're making content instead of seeing a gig or whatever. And here, I I I've I go to many gigs. I love getting my like you know 10 seconds of uh the per whoever's on stage, but like I'm also not like oh, let me get a full studio ring light and like blind everyone behind me who's also trying to watch the gig. Like, um, yeah, it's mental. Yeah, so sorry, my vent is um everyone uh post-pandemic. Sorry. Uh we are talking about the bus though. The worst thing I've I haven't I didn't see this happen, but I saw the aftermath is I went to sit on a seat and uh I'd looked down, and there was just what I think are either fingernails or toenails just on the bus. And I was like, someone just giving themselves a full mani petty and just leaving them on the fucking floor of the bus. And I was like, that's fucking disgusting.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, was there 10 of them?
SPEAKER_04I just didn't go counting, but there was I'd say enough of them. There was enough of them that looked like a full set.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, oh my god. What I've actually got to get like what possesses somebody? I wouldn't do that in the house.
SPEAKER_04I'm like, maybe if you sure if you had nicked your hand, you went ding, but I don't think I'd be going, you're gonna crack out all ten fingers and go go to town.
SPEAKER_00Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so there you go. And that was also post-poc post-pandemic, so just fucking look after yourselves and fucking stop wrecking other people's fucking time.
SPEAKER_00I hope that there's like some sort of like societal study done on the universal psyche of the way people behave, and we can be like, oh, what changed there? Like what what was it that people stopped caring about?
SPEAKER_04I have a clue. There's definitely they'll there'll be something, do you know? But it's like the type of people who you know take their like shoes and socks off on a plane and stuff like that. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03It's just like Joe, you should do you should get like 10 of those people that do all those repulsive things in public, throw them into a house together and put it on TV because watch surely they can they're so self-centered that they don't realize what they're doing, but surely they'll get triggered by each other.
SPEAKER_04It's like the traitors, but they're all traitors basically. But yeah, what was it called?
SPEAKER_00Something's in my head like scruff gaff or like scruff gaff.
SPEAKER_03Thank god I can cycle home. I'm like, are you getting the bus now?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh yeah. Well, if I see toenails on that bus, I swear to God.
SPEAKER_04Well, we're all getting the bus later, so who knows? I'm sure we can get all three of us back in and we'll have the three different vents about the bus. People are gross. There's any one takeaway from today's episode. People are gross. That does it for today's episode of the podcast.
