SPEAKER_06Welcome everybody to another edition of Bishop Healing Baseball. Another beautiful day here at Bishop Mueller Field, and uh getting ready for the Crusaders to take on uh Council Bless Thomas Jefferson. Uh, we're gonna do a quick interview here with one of the assistant coaches, and then we'll get to uh talking about uh the last game and today's game. Hello, Jeff. How are you? Good, how are you? Got Jeff Blander here, our one of the assistant coaches. And uh Jeff, I know you work a lot with the JV, but what what uh in the offseason, what what was your involvement as far as the varsity? Were you working with hitters, pitchers, what were you working with?
SPEAKER_15A little bit of both. Um I've mostly done pitching in the past, but I dug in a little bit more with the hitters this year after working with David Carrion and Jeff Lafavre in the fall, and uh felt like I had a better grasp of that than I did in the past. Good.
SPEAKER_06It seemed uh seemed to pay off a little bit on Tuesday. They uh did a nice job of hitting the ball. And um talk about uh I know you said you know, we talked about you worked a little bit with the pitchers. Um can't say enough about Mason Moravik. That kid, he came in uh wasn't intimidated at all. I know you I know you uh are were really proud of the the way he came in and handled that. What uh what can you tell us about Mason and his mentality?
SPEAKER_15Yeah, Mason's really good on the mound. Um we've had him on JV the last couple years, and he's always been someone we could count on in big situations. He just fills up the strike zone and attacks hitters the whole time, which is you know huge for any pitcher. Um he makes it really easy to play defense behind him and it gives the guys confidence in him.
SPEAKER_06Awesome. Yeah, he uh came in and walked that first batter on four pitches and then said that's enough of that, and and struck out the next one and got himself in a situation where he had the bases lowed and was able to work out of that. So uh really looking forward to Mason continuing to develop and grow. Uh is there anything else you can tell us about uh what we have to look forward to the rest of the year and who some of the kids may be that are gonna fill some roles from last year?
SPEAKER_15Yeah, absolutely. Um the guys I'd be most excited for on the mound is probably Dylan Knapp. Um he's changed a little bit from last year, and he really puts together a tough at bat for most hitters and keeps them really uncomfortable in there. And as long as he can throw enough strikes, he's gonna be really, really good. Um, outside of that, I would say we've got any number of guys who might step in. Uh Chase Beck always plays really good defense, and when he can put it together at the bat as well, uh, he looks really good out there. So I'd look for him, Mason, uh, Tommy Carroll, any of those guys, they've all worked their butts off this past year, and uh we look forward to seeing them succeed on a varsity level this time.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that'll be great. I know uh they all uh did a good job representing themselves and and healing on Tuesday against uh Lamars and looking forward to another great game tonight. Jeff, I want to thank you for joining us. I know you got to get down there to the dugout and uh help get these kids ready for the game, but uh appreciate the time that you put in and and all the coaches put in to uh put this great product out on the field.
SPEAKER_15Thank you very much. We're excited for the season.
SPEAKER_06Thanks, Jeff. Thank you. We will take a quick one-minute break and be right back with starting lineups and talking about today's game.
SPEAKER_13Hello, listeners. I am Father Travis Crotty, the chaplain of Bishop Healen Catholic High School. As we prepare for this athletic competition with the Crusaders, we want to take an opportunity to offer a pregame prayer, keeping in mind the safety and the enthusiasm of all sporting events for the safety of our own students and those of our opponents. Let us pray in the name of the Father, and of the Son, of the Holy Spirit, amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, and thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank you, listeners, and go, Crusaders.
SPEAKER_11You're listening to FM 88.1, KFHC, Ponca Sioux City, and KOIA, Storm Lake, Sioux Land Catholic Radio.
SPEAKER_03And now we're Crusader Sports on your Catholic Radio.
SPEAKER_06And uh, John, I know that uh I think the one of the most important roles you're gonna have this year is going to get in starting lineups because uh you're getting inside information and and stuff from each one of the coaches, and I know you did that today. So uh we kind of we know a lot about healing because we got to watch him the other night. So you want to let everybody know about uh Thomas Jefferson and and and what we can expect from them?
SPEAKER_08Absolutely. I had a chance to go down and talk to uh the Thomas Jefferson uh head coach, Shay Patterson, uh, a little bit about Shay's uh 2014 grad of uh Council Bluff St. Albert and a 2018 grad of Morningside College. Uh talked to him a little bit about their double header against Sergeant Bluff. First game, they uh competed really well with Sergeant Bluff, and the second game, obviously, it was a little different. They they got uh kind of blasted out in that second game, and he said the reason for that was his pitching just got really erratic. He said as long as his starting pitchers can keep the ball in the zone, uh around the zone, they can compete. Uh it's when when the pitchers start getting off base, they give up walks, hit hit by pitches, uh, and then they struggle and have to have to throw fastballs for strikes, and that's when they got in trouble last time. He said today they're looking to be competitive. Uh the words he used, he used them over and over again for me was they wanted to compete, compete, compete. He's got a couple kids who he's said to keep an eye on and to watch. Uh Dalton Garrison, their leadoff hitter, said is extremely, extremely good and uh very, very defensive. He's a lockdown defensive player. They also uh he wanted to talk about uh a little bit about how young they were, and that that's what he's kind of looking forward to today, Mike, is the improvement of his young players. He's got some sophomores and some freshmen that uh are new and learning, and he's hoping today that they just grow a little bit from the last doubleheader.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I'm uh I'm curious to see uh how they come back from uh that that doubleheader uh against Sergeant Bluff. And uh it's never easy to travel and and making the trip up to Sioux City can uh take an extra toll on you. But um now let's talk a little bit about uh the Healing Crusaders and and what uh what can we expect out of them today?
SPEAKER_08And obviously, Coach Wesselman was extremely happy with the pitching. Uh when I when I had a chance to ask him a couple questions, uh that was the first thing he went to. Uh the starting pitching uh with uh Gaswin and Le Favre. Uh LeFaver uh in the first game, he said kind of started off a little slow, but once he got his rhythm going, he was extremely happy with them. And then, of course, uh Nathan Gaswin just had an outstanding second game, giving up one hit and just basically one hit shy of a perfect game in a five-inning affair. He was a little concerned about how they started off hitting, but was extremely happy with how they finished hitting after they got some swings in. And he's looking forward to seeing that improve today, Mike. Uh he wants this, he wants his players to stay engaged. Uh he thought maybe there was a little letdown yes uh the other day, but and and he wants them to stay focused for the whole doubleheader uh when they're ahead by seven runs or if it's a one one-run game. And again, he he also meant mentioned the relief pitching of of the young uh Moravic uh kid who came in and threw three, I think 3.2 innings or three and a half innings and just did an outstanding job. As far as what coach is concerned about today is the unknown of the pitching. He is excited to see Dylan Knapp on the mound in this first game, has good stuff and looking forward to seeing how his control is. And then, of course, in the second game, he's got an eighth grader going in the young Aiden Lefavre. And he's anxious to see how Aiden handles the pressure uh for such a young for such a young athlete in his first starting pitching role at Bishop Healing.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's uh that's a big step. Eighth grade, you're you're making your first varsity start, but uh he's thrown he's thrown a lot of pitches uh in travel ball and and things like that. So uh but like we said, it is his first high school game and gotta wonder if the the nerves and the jitters may get to him a little bit to start out, but uh he's got uh he's got a great teacher and his dad, and he's he's got someone he can look up to uh with his brother Caleb. So uh I I think we'll see a good strong performance out of him today.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I think so too. Uh and coach also was he really wanted to see good at bats today. He wants to jump on them early and then stay on them. So we'll see how that uh if that uh message got relayed in practice yesterday.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, let's hope so. Let's take a quick 30-second break and we'll be back with the starting lineups.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Welcome back, everyone. As we get ready for the first pitch, uh Healing's about to take the field to start their warm-ups. Uh for the visiting team, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. They will start out with leadoff hitter will be Garrison. He'll be playing in right field. Null will be the second place batter, and he will be playing center field. On the mound for Council Bluffs today will be Mergen, and he will be batting third. Playing second base for the Yellow Jackets will be Anderson. Townsend will behind the plate, be behind the plate and batting fifth. Norton will be playing third base and batting sixth. Persinger will be out in left field batting seventh. The designated hitter will be Grant. The shortstop will be Tripp. And batting ninth will be Heinek playing first base. Starters in lineup for Bishop Heelin. JJ Hope coming in with a batting average of 333 on the young season is playing shortstop. Second batter is Peyton Erickson, also batting 333, playing catcher. Batting third for the Crusaders, Caleb LaFaver with a batting average of 714, and he will be the DH. Mason Moravic will be in left field. Batting fourth, Brody Shaner with a 286 batting average will be playing third. In the fifth position will be Tommy Carroll batting 500. He will be out in center field. Batting sixth, batting average of 200, will be Nathan Gaswent playing in right field. Chase Beck is batting eighth and playing second base, and on the mound, like we talked about, is Dylan Knapp, uh batting average of 250. And uh, you know, the those last couple batting averages were a little low, but uh when Nathan came up the other night, he came up in situations where his competitiveness, I think, kind of overtook. Let's just calm down and let's you know, let's get get some good swings in and make contact. But uh I fully expect both those averages to come up and uh we're getting ready to go here. Healing is in all white uniforms with blue pinstripes, blue numbers, gold caps. Uh Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson is in all black with white stripes down the pant and around the sleeves and white numbers. Uh we're getting ready to have the first pitch here. Let's go ahead and do a quick station ID, and we will be right back.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Welcome back, folks. Uh, we've got Garrison up to lead off, and the count on him is one ball, one strike. Ball hit back up to the shortstop. Hope slides over to his left. Good throw to Blatchford at first base for the out.
SPEAKER_08That's exactly what Coach was hoping to see out of Dylan Knapp is he's get that ball in the strike zone and let them hit it. See what our defense can do.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they've they've got a solid defense behind them, so he just put the ball in play and and let your guys behind you take care of you. Next up for Thomas Jefferson will be the center fielder null. He steps in on the left side. Here's the delivery by Knapp. Fouled back into the net for strike one. No balls, one strike.
SPEAKER_08Beautiful pitch by Dylan coming on the inside at a left-handed hitter. Dylan in the wind up. Here's the pitch. I don't mind that pitch, Mike. A little bit outside, but you know, he kept it around the zone.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he did. Interesting uh the way Dylan does his wind up. It it barely does it come up above his head. He starts at his waist and kind of leaves everything there.
SPEAKER_07Yep.
SPEAKER_06Little curveball on the outside corner there just just missed. Two balls, one strike to Null. Swing and a miss there makes the count two and two.
SPEAKER_08I like that spot on this kid. No is standing right there on the on the inside of the plate. So that's a that's a beautiful inside spot.
SPEAKER_06And here's the pitch. Swing and a miss for strike three. That's a pretty pretty piece of pitching there by Dylan Knapp. Yeah, really good job there. And uh as we talk about all the time, it's it's helpful when you have uh Peyton Erickson behind the the plate. He's he does a good job of uh placing the glove and and all they have to do is hit it. Next up for Council Bluffs is Mergen, the pitcher.
SPEAKER_08First pitch, way outside for ball one. Yeah, no question. I I mean having having Peyton Erickson back there is just huge.
SPEAKER_06There's the next pitch. Flies out to pops it out to the shortstop. JJ Hope goes back to make the play. And that retires the side. No runs, no hits, no errors for Thomas Jefferson in the top of the first. When we come back, we'll have Healin coming to bat. 30-second timeout.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Welcome back to Bishop Healan Baseball as we get ready for the Crusaders to come up to bat for the first time. I know they probably see a lot of it in practice and in batting practice because assistant coach Blanner is a lefty, so if they've got him throwing batting practice, then they've probably seen a lot of it.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, this will be really interesting. Like you said, Mike, we didn't see a lefty yester uh the other night, so see how these kids react.
SPEAKER_06I'd like to take a minute to thank some of our underwriters of Catholic Radio, uh the Bargain Center, Barclay Asphalt, Barcliffe University's Catholic Connection Scholarship, Bob Rose Point After in North End Zone, Bush Dry Cleaners, Catholic Charities, and Central Bank and Sioux City and Storm Lake. We appreciate their support for Catholic Radio. And uh, like we talked about the other day, if you're a business or an individual who wants to support Catholic radio, uh give Ann at the station or any of the folks down there a call, and they'll be more than happy to work with you to uh get you on the list of underwriters and and uh continue that support of of the great Catholic radio and the pro programming that they put out.
SPEAKER_08Mike, this is gonna be a little different than the other night. Uh Mergen doesn't he doesn't come with a lot of velocity. These kids are gonna have to be patient. Um it's gonna be real easy to get up there and be over over-eager. That ball's coming in quite a bit uh quite a bit slower uh than what we saw against the Lamar's pitching the other night.
SPEAKER_06Yep, so here we go. Hope getting ready to step in to lead things off for the Crusaders.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, JJ looks solid at the plate against Lamar's. Let's see if he can keep that up. And of course, first thing you gotta look to see where the third baseman's playing. I that's always a threat for JJ is to lay one down.
SPEAKER_06Yep, they didn't do any scouting because they're playing way back at the corners. First pitch in there for a strike, no balls one strike. Here's the wind up, here comes the pitch. Hit out the center field. Center fielder started in, went back, made a nice play there.
SPEAKER_08And that's kind of what I was talking about right there. You know, it's you have to sit back and wait, and and you get a little over-eager, and I think JJ was just a little over-eager on that second pitch there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he uh I think he saw something he really liked, and and probably a little bit early on it. Erickson steps in, first pitch is outside for ball one. He talked the other night about needing to put uh do a better job of putting the bat on the ball, and he really did in that second game. Well, he did. He did.
SPEAKER_08He came through in a couple key hits. And of course, we just we both know how solid he is behind the plate.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that second pitch there was a ball. Wind up, here comes the pitch. Looks like the way he's releasing it, he's trying to throw some curve balls, and it's just not breaking for him. That that was high in there for ball three, three balls, no strikes. Pitch high and outside for ball four, four pitch walk. Erickson will go to first base, and I'm guessing he'll turn right back around for a pinch runner.
SPEAKER_08That's a good good bat for Peyton. Nice and patient. Didn't get eager and swing. It almost looks like the pitcher's kind of shot putting the ball in. It doesn't look like a fluid uh, you know, follow-through type throw.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it is interesting. Uh LeFaver steps in here with uh runner on first and one out. Uh Heaton is a pinch runner for Erickson. Here's the pitch. Way outside for ball one.
SPEAKER_08Caleb has a nice open stance and uh very patient at the plate. Very relaxed and very patient.
SPEAKER_06There's the pitch. Another that one's low and outside. Ball two. Heaton not taking much of a lead over there. We'll see if he continues to. It's a little bit tougher when you've got a left-handed pitcher because he can look right at you. But uh swing and a miss there by Caleb for strike. Ball gets past the catcher a little bit, and Heaton takes off to second base. So we got two balls, one strike on Caleb with the runner on second. So here's a uh RBI opportunity for Caleb here early in the game.
SPEAKER_08Good piece of running by by Heaton to get down to second.
SPEAKER_06That ball was way inside. Three balls, one strike. And you're right, it is it does look more like of a shot put motion than a than an actual over-the-top pitch motion. I think he was trying to throw a curveball there, it just didn't break. That ball was low for ball four. So back-to-back walks. And that puts runners at first and second and brings up Shaner, who, like we talked about the other night, he is not going to get cheated when it's time to swing the bat. No.
SPEAKER_08He had some solid bats the other night. I know it's it only shows him hitting 286, obviously, after two games, but let me tell you, he ripped the ball last the other night.
SPEAKER_06That first pitch in there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Yeah, I I think uh the way this pitcher's throwing, if if it's where it needs to be, he's gonna give it a ride. Wind up, pitch to the plate. He hits that one hard and foul down the third baseline. Out of play. No balls, two strikes.
SPEAKER_08Just sit back in, man. Got a little overanxious on that. And it's easy to do. It's almost it's almost better to step up on the plate against a pitcher like this.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, because it doesn't appear to be a whole lot of velocity. Here's the pitch in there low for ball one, one ball, two strikes. Neither run of or taking too much of a lead out there on the base pass. Shortstop kind of cheating over. Second baseman cheating over. So there's a couple gaps that he can if he can hit them. That pitch is in there inside for ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
SPEAKER_08There's a lot of room in the outfield, too. Yeah, center fielder's playing straight away. I yeah, and I don't I mean, obviously, Mike, they we only have two games in the book, but I'd almost be cheating over, especially with a pitcher like this. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Shamer fouls that ball off over toward the council bluff dugout, so the count remains two and two. Just needs to be a little bit more patient. You can tell that he's he's wanting to turn on one here. Pitcher from the stretch. Here's the pitch. That ball's outside for ball three.
SPEAKER_08Full count. Nice job by the catcher. Did a nice job framing that, but that was a little bit out. Sumpire really looks like he's in the zone tonight. He's he's very consistent.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. That ball is ripped out to left field and caught. And Heaton has doubled up at second base to end the inning. So Healon gets two runners on and is unable to get anybody across. After one, the score is zero to zero. We'll take a 30-minute break and be back. 30-second break, not 30 minutes. That'd be a long one, wouldn't it? That'd be a long one.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06It's always nice when your family's listening to you on the radio and you make a minor mistake, like we'll take a 30-minute break, and your son listening in Lincoln likes to text you and go good catch with a couple of laughing faces. So they're always have them to keep us humble, and I know John, your family's listening as well, and uh all the way from Cincinnati, Ohio.
SPEAKER_08My sister Mary Claire, class of 68, is tuned in. So thank you for listening, Mary. Because to go back to that last inning, Mike, um, you saw the inexperienced, a little bit of our of our pinch runner heat, and just an eighth grader, and you saw coach after that play talk to him about you know getting out there and making sure that that ball's down uh before he takes off. Just a just a you know, just a young a young person or a young inexperienced uh uh player. And and coach did a great job grabbing him and saying, hey, that's okay, you know. Well, next time it's a learning experience.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and it was it was hard to tell if if that ball was trapped or not, but uh umpire ruled that it was caught. First pitch was in there for a ball.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06Anderson, the second baseman at the plate. Second pitch is in there for a strike, one ball, one strike. Well, Peyton and Dillon are really in sync, Mike. Ball hit sharply to Shaner at third base, makes a great play. Ball bounces to the first baseman. That was a good stop by Shaner to to keep it to uh keep it in the infield.
SPEAKER_08Great play. Line drive hit right over third base. Shahner backhanded that. That would have been an unbelievable play to catch him, even if it on a good throw, Mike.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and it it uh like you said, we were watching, and a good throw would have been tough. I think he would have beat it out, but uh just going to it going to his right the way he did and and coming back across his body to make that throw was pretty impressive. Uh next up is Townsend. Nap from the stretch. First pitch is outside for a ball. Erickson throws down to first base to keep the runner honest. I don't mind that. I like seeing him do that. Yeah, they're gonna dance off out there. He's got the arm that he can get it down there. Dillon delivers to the plate, batter squares to bunt, fouls it off. One ball, one strike. That was kind of a half-hearted effort to bunt there, John. Yeah, he came across, he came across good, and he kind of pulled the bat back a little bit. Yeah, just at the last second. Like I want to bunt, but now I don't want to.
SPEAKER_08Pitch outside for ball two, two balls, one strike. You know, Bunny's kind of a lost start, Mike. I mean, when you and I were growing up, that uh everyone knew how to do it and and did it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's uh that's the small ball that I like to see. Knapp with the delivery. Line back up out to Tommy Carroll in center field, gets away from him. He chases it down. They're bringing him, they're bringing him. Gotta play it home. Beautiful. Nice relay from JJ Hope to Peyton Erickson at home plate. Runner on first. Anderson was thrown out at home for the first out. That was pitcher perfect. It was, and I they sent him around third when Hope was virtually catching the ball from Carroll.
SPEAKER_08So Carroll did a great job chasing that ball down. You know, really made the error, but he didn't stop. He he he chased that ball down, got it to the relay on Hope, and that was just an absolute gorgeous play at home plate. Beautiful throw, beautiful uh uh swing by Erickson at home to get the runner.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, a little 8-6-2 action there. Dylan Knapp with the pitch in there for a strike. Norton at the plate for Council Bluff's Thomas Jefferson. That was, like you said, that was picture perfect textbook. Couldn't have drawn that one up any better. Knapp looking into Erickson for the sign. Here's the pitch. In low and inside for ball one, one ball, one strike.
SPEAKER_08I like that pitch. Trying to curve that out on the inside corner, you know. It may have caught it, but uh just a just a beautiful pitch.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and this umpire, he's been consistent. Yeah, you know, the the little bit we've been we've been having pitches thrown, so that pitch on the outside corner for strike two, one ball, two strikes.
SPEAKER_08You know, an umpire is just like everybody else. You get in the zone, and you know when you're in the zone right off the bat, and he's definitely in the zone. He's very consistent and very comfortable back there.
SPEAKER_06Knapp getting ready with the delivery. Here's the pitch. Low and outside for ball two, two balls, two strikes. I don't know if you saw it last night, John. I was watching the Iowa-Michigan State baseball game, and they did about a five-minute interview with Jaron Bleecker, and they asked him what he does to get ready for games, and he said he listens to music, and you're not gonna believe what gets him fired up for for uh baseball. I'll tell you after this pitch by Knapp. Hit sharply to second base over to first for the out. Uh Townsend advances to third on that, on the sacrifice. Yeah, uh Jaron said to get fired up for baseball games, he listens to Frank Sinatra. Why wouldn't you? And Strangers isn't in the night is is the one that gets him going. He said he started listening to that whenever he was a sophomore in high school and just kind of it completely shocked the announcers. When you find something that works, you stick with it, Mike.
SPEAKER_08Absolutely. He he looked sharp the other night. He really did. How'd he throw about four or five innings? Yeah. Yeah, he looked really sharp.
SPEAKER_06Thomas Jefferson has a runner at third, two outs, per singer up. That first pitch was a ball. That pitch is in there for a strike. Beautiful. One ball, one strike.
SPEAKER_08I'd like to see Dylan come on the inside corner on this one. He's throwing one outside, one right down the plate.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. Outside corner for strike two. One ball, two strikes.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's doing exactly what coach wanted him to do. He's around the plate. Even even the ones he's missing, Mike. He is not missing by much. Yeah, he's he's right on, like you said.
SPEAKER_06Oh. Runner off batter offered at that. Pitch was outside for ball two. Two balls, two strikes. So he wanted to go. He wanted to go. Peyton was begging for the uh appeal to the base umpire, but he didn't get it. That pitch is inside for ball three. Three balls, two strikes. Here we go.
SPEAKER_08Here we go. Full count.
SPEAKER_06Townsend at third. Pursinger at the plate. See what Dylan can deal here with this pitch.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's taking it a little bit longer on this one.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. That's on the outside corner. Strike three. Caught him looking. Beautiful. For out number three. Two two solid innings by Dillon. Very solid. At the end of two, score is Healen Zero, Thomas Jefferson Zero. We'll be back in 30 seconds.

SPEAKER_06As we get ready for the bottom of the second inning, Healen will send up Tommy Carroll, Nathan Gaswent, and Beckett Blatchford. You know, on that that grounder to Beck at second base, uh the throw was kind of high, and like you talked about the other night, it's nice to have 6'4 first baseman. And uh Blatchford used every inch of his frame to reach up and get that ball to uh to get the out.
SPEAKER_08Not only that, I mean he he was about a foot and a half up in the air and came down, and that's not people think that that's that's just a routine play for a first baseman, but that's not easy to come down and make sure your foot's on that base. It's easy to get lost.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, if you don't come down on it the right way, you end up rolling an ankle. So uh Tommy Carroll getting ready to step in and on this early season, his batting average is uh 500. He did a really good job uh on Tuesday night at the plate and then made a great diving catch to end an inning. And you know, like you said, the ball got past him in center field here, and and he didn't give up. He got it back to Hope, and Hope was able to get it to home. Absolutely. First pitch, Carroll swings and fouls it off for a strike.
SPEAKER_08Beautiful cut. That was a beautiful cut. He just missed that. Yeah, Tommy had some really solid at bats the other night. Um, he looked good. And matter of fact, that three base on balls, uh, a couple base hits, two for four. Um just a solid day.
SPEAKER_06That pitch bounces in there for ball one, one ball, one strike. Tommy didn't even make an effort to move, he just watched it go to the backstop. Pitcher starts his wind up. Here's a delivery. Yeah, it was a curve ball that didn't curve. That was way outside. Two balls, one strike.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I can't tell if that was a changeup or a curve, Mike, but it if it was a curve, it did not break.
SPEAKER_06Tommy hits fly ball out to center field, center fielder's on the run, makes the catch out there.
SPEAKER_08Just got underneath it. Boy, I tell you what, Mike, if you get the ball up in the air today, especially the left field, left center, that ball's gonna go a long way. That that flag's moving pretty decent.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, the wind blowing out. The wind is blowing out that way. Brings to the plate, right fielder Nathan Gaswent. Uh maybe he can relax just as bad. He doesn't have anybody on base and he can just focus on making contact. Foul's that first pitch off. Good cut. No balls, one strike.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it's a what a gorgeous day out here. It's Sister of St. Francis uh Field sitting here in the Jim Wharton press box.
SPEAKER_06That pitch there is way outside, one ball, one strike. Whatever if it's a changeup or a curve, it's not working for him because he's not able to, he's not anywhere close to the plate. I I think I really do think it's a curve, it's just not breaking. Gaswin pops that up toward the first baseman, first baseman runs in, makes the catch for out number two.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, just again, just got underneath it, and that's the problem with with the kid pitching like this, is you get over anxious, and uh it's real easy to dip that shoulder and pop that ball up.
SPEAKER_06Bladford, uh, the next batter, first baseman, he steps in from the left side. First pitch. Way outside for ball one, one ball, no strikes. Boy, he's a big presence in there, isn't he, Mike? Yes, he is, and he's and he looks very comfortable. That pitch right across for strike one, one ball, one strike. Yeah, I'm anxious to see him swing the bat and and put bat to ball. Wind up, here's the pitch. Good cut there.
SPEAKER_08Step up in the plate a little bit, young man. That's he's a little bit a little bit uh way ahead of that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Out in front of that one just a little bit. One ball, two strikes is a count. Pitcher in his wind up, here's the pitch. Swing and a miss for strike three. For healing, no runs, no hits. We head to the top of the third. Score is zero to zero. We'll be back in 30 seconds.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that's what I'm talking about right there. They you either go way up in the plate or get back.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic Radio station.
SPEAKER_06Well, we head to the top of the third inning here, and Thomas Jefferson will send Grant, the designated hitter, uh Heinek, the first baseman, and Garrison up to the plate. I'd like to take another moment to thank the underwriters that that keep Catholic Radio growing and keep healing baseball and healing sports on the radio. Uh Christy Smith Funeral Homes, Cenos, Dr. Ryan Meese, Council Oak Supply Company, Culligan, Cybercloak Technology, and Dave Pepin Real Estate. Again, thanks to everyone who is an underwriter for Catholic Radio. Grant Grant steps in here uh to face Dylan Knapp. Here's a pitch.
SPEAKER_08In there for strike one. Can't thank our sponsors enough, you know, and get out there and and and do business with our sponsors. Support our Catholic radio and our healing crusaders.
SPEAKER_06That pitch on the outside corner for strike two. Dylan is really in the groove right now. Yeah. You watch Peyton. Peyton. Peyton's not even moving. Knapp shakes him off, comes to the plate. Peyton tried to frame that one. I don't know what the batter was thinking. He started off toward first base. That's just ball one. Very good. That was a gorgeous pitch. Slider uh just missed on the outside corner. One ball, two strikes. Lines that to JJ Hope at shortstop, who just stands there and puts his glove up and makes the catch for the first out.
SPEAKER_08You know, we talked about the other night, Mike, about the unknowns. Um, you know, moving moving JJ over to shortstop uh after you, you know, you lost Hunter Wahab, uh has just been just such a smooth transition so far.
SPEAKER_06First pitch in there for a strike to Heinek. Yeah, it's uh they're you know almost mirror each other with with the way they play shortstop. Here comes a pitch. Swing and a miss for strike two.
SPEAKER_08Beautiful, kept that ball low. You know, Dylan's really doing a j. You haven't seen too many high strikes. Uh Dillon's really, really finding that low strike at the knees.
SPEAKER_06Peyton was set up outside, and that's where Dillon went. It just bounced in there for ball one. One ball, two strikes. Wind up, and here's the pitch. Delivery to the plate, swing and a miss for strike three. Out number two brings Garrison to the plate. Grounded uh short to first his first time up. Third strikeout for Dylan in this early part of the game.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's he's he's he's throwing it extremely smooth. I'm I'm sure uh mom and dad are over there biting their nails, you know, Dylan's first time on the mound this year. But uh so far so good, mom.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, you have to wonder if if dad's listening while Dylan's pitching or if he just does it in games that he's not pitching. Wind up and here's the pitch.
SPEAKER_08I have a feeling he's listening because we're right behind him. We got a good look at what he's throwing. So I have a feeling he's listening.
SPEAKER_06One ball, one strike to Garrison. Knapp ready to make the pitch. Here's a delivery. Gorgeous. He's hitting that outside corner. He really is. If it was a house, he'd have it fully painted by now because he's got that corner taken care of. It's one ball, two strikes. He looks so comfortable on the mound right now. He really does. And that's strike three. Batter stood there and watched that one go by. It was the exact same same place as the pitch right before. After two and a half innings, Council Bluff zero, Bishop Healan zero. Healing coming to bat. We'll be back in 30 seconds.
SPEAKER_10What makes your home home? Is it a favorite reading corner? A growth chart on the door frame? A bump bed that doubles as a fort? Home is that feeling of warmth and safety. A place where you belong at Security National Bank. We put Thoughtful care and attention into helping you find your place. Not just any place, but your home. Because home matters. Security National Bank. Everything matters. Member FDIC.
SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06We are back and heading into the bottom of the third. Healan will send up Chase Beck, Dylan Knapp, and the top of the order, JJ Hope. Uh to see what we can do in this inning against this left-handed pitcher.
SPEAKER_08Well, I as I I talked about earlier, Mike, Coach Wesselman wanted his team to stay engaged. And you know, we talked about it the other night when your pitcher's throwing really good. Sometimes it's it's real easy to get a little lax the day as a call, and I'm sure Coach is reminding his ball players, okay, now let's go. Be a little patient. Let's get some let's get some base runners and let's get that first run across. Give him some support.
SPEAKER_06I just just watching the uh throw down to second there. The catcher kind of shot puts his throw too down to second. So that's that's got to be something to keep in mind if if you've got some speed and you're on the bases, is is it's kind of a lob down to second base that it's not on a rope.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, I and he and he really is. That's the only way I can describe uh this pitcher is that he throws with the shot put motion. And uh, I mean it's effective so far. Two and a half innings, and and uh we've got goose eggs on the scoreboard, so let's get her going here.
SPEAKER_06Here's the first pitch to Beck. Outside corner for strike one. Both pitchers are getting that outside corner. They have uh he has not missed a call the entire game. Beck pops that up. That's trouble. Get over the first base. Pops that out to the pitcher who struggled a little bit with the sun but was able to make the uh put out for strike for out number one. Uh brings to the plate, the pitcher Dylan Knapp. All right, Dylan, let's help your cause here a little bit. Yeah, we're hit. We've had a couple good hits. We just we're not able to put it where they're not. First pitch in there, low and outside for ball one.
SPEAKER_08I'd like to see Dylan just turn on one here.
SPEAKER_06That pitch on the outside corner for a strike, one ball, one strike.
SPEAKER_08I tell you what, Mike, that's that's the only place he's going. He has not come in on any of our hitters.
SPEAKER_07There we go.
SPEAKER_06Dylan pops that up on the infield. Pops out to the shortstop. How do you feel about that one-handed catch, John? You know, back when we were little, you you made sure you put two hands on it.
SPEAKER_08I'm watching way too much TV. I'm uh I'm a little more in favor of getting underneath and getting that second hand up there.
SPEAKER_06I'm with you. Uh J brings JJ Hope to the plate. Flew out to the center fielder the first time up. First pitch bounces in there for a ball, ball one.
SPEAKER_08I'm sure grandma grandma's up there in left field watching the game. She doesn't miss too many games, uh, along with uh several of the Hope family.
SPEAKER_06Here's a delivery to the plate. Outside for a strike, one ball, one strike.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's he's uh he's just working the outside of the plate, hoping to get these guys chasing it.
SPEAKER_06Nice. Hits that sharply back up middle, bounces off the shortstops glove for the first hit of the game for the Crusaders.
SPEAKER_08And that's a hit all the way. That guy, that guy had even if he uh feels that clean, Mike, that's that's way too tough of a play to catch somebody with JJ's speed.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that he was he was not gonna get him out. So you got hope at first base, brings Peyton Erickson up to the plate. And you gotta figure that just to try to get something going, that JJ's gonna be going here pretty quick. He has got a huge lead. Yeah. He is beyond the cutout at first base, folks. And that's a left-handed pitcher on the mound.
SPEAKER_08He didn't give away too much there going over to first, so let's see if he's got a better move than that. Kind of went straight over.
SPEAKER_06Pitcher looks JJ back. First pitch in there, swing and a miss by Erickson for strike one. That's the first curveball I think I've seen him throw that broke. Yeah, I think it's it's the first one that was effective for him. Pitcher's obviously in the wind up or uh the stretch with the runner at first. There goes Hope. Nice. Erickson hits it to the shortstop, bounces off his glove. Hope never stopped running as he rounded second. He gets all the way to third on that.
SPEAKER_08Shortstop tried to backhand that and a ball that he could have very easily just got in front of.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_08And uh and he paid the price there because he tried to backhand it, it just got away from him a little bit. And the guy with JJ speed, I mean, he's at third like that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and he he did not even look. He was he was going to third all the way. Yeah. Uh brings up LeFavor with runners at first and third, two outs. Uh got a chance to drive in, get have a chance here to drive in that first run of the game for the Crusaders.
SPEAKER_08I'd like to see if Coach Welselman tries to manufacture a run here, but with somebody left like LeFavre up the bat, you don't want to waste that either.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Heaton pinch running for Erickson over at first base. He's got a fairly decent lead. They're probably not going to worry about him too much. First pitch is way outside to Caleb for ball one.
SPEAKER_08Caleb's light just put that thing right down the middle, like that.
SPEAKER_06Drives that out to right field, hits it right at the right fielder. Well, he turned on that. He took a three steps over and made the catch for the third out. Healing gets two runners on that inning, but unable to put anything across. We'll head to the top of the fourth. We'll be back in 30 seconds.
SPEAKER_05Funk Brothers Plumbing and Heating has provided top quality plumbing and home improvement services in the Sioux City and the surrounding communities. SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Welcome back, everybody. Like to give a shout out to Mary Kate Blanter. She just sent a text. She's one of the girls' soccer coaches. She's on her way to the game tonight, and uh Healand is playing over at Memorial Field. And she wanted to say that for the second night of the season, surprisingly, John and I are doing a good job.
SPEAKER_08Well, yeah, the jury's still out, Mike. The jury's still out.
SPEAKER_06And she is definitely one of my most vocal critics. So if if if it wasn't good, uh there would have been a lot of laughing faces, emojis, and that in that text. But uh Dylan's back out here to start the top of the fourth inning, and that will Thomas Jefferson will be sending up null, uh, the pitcher Mergen and Anderson.
SPEAKER_08You know, Mike, uh both of us had our daughters played uh soccer at Healand, and what a program they have uh with Coach Sean Mansfield. Just just a great job that he's done.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I think since I've been around Healing Soccer back in the early 2000s, there's only been two seasons they haven't made it. That ball hit out to Tommy Carroll, and he makes that catch over in right center field. Uh fortunately he didn't run into Nathan Gaswin out there. I think he would have taken the brunt of that.
SPEAKER_08So I don't know if Nathan heard him. I don't know, and I don't know if Tommy made that call. I mean, Tommy had that all the way. That was a beautiful play, but I'm not so sure Nathan Nathan heard him call him off.
SPEAKER_06So Mergen steps in with one down, knap with the delivery. That is touch it, touch it, there you go. I don't know if that's tapped foul or kicked foul. Kicked foul or what, but it slowly dribbles down the third baseline for strike one. He kind of he he kind of hits like he throws. It's just kind of you're not sure. Here's the pitch. That bounces off the mound right to JJ Hope. JJ scoops it up, throws over to Blatchford at first base for the second out. Gorgeous play.
SPEAKER_08What an adjustment by JJ. That ball hit the mound, uh, straight up the middle on him, bounced to the left, and he made just a great adjustment, picked it up and threw it on the threw it on the run.
SPEAKER_06Anderson is gonna step in for the Yellow Jackets. That pitch in there for a strike.
SPEAKER_08Boy, Dylan likes to work fast, and I like that. He's he's ready to go.
SPEAKER_06Yes, yes, there's there's not a whole lot uh whole lot of time between pitches. One ball, one strike to count. Dylan with the delivery. That pitch outside, but bounced in there.
SPEAKER_08You know that pitch before he threw that inside curve, and and I tell you, I really like that pitch. And I know it and it doesn't miss by much.
SPEAKER_06That pitch got away from him there. A little outside. Three balls, one strike is a count. Yep, settle down here, young man. Let's get a strike. Here's the wind up and the pitch. Popped up. Hope. Moravic makes that catch out in left field. Hope started back, and that was a perfect job by Moravik. Decided to uh let Moravic take that. So it's three up, three down for the Yellow Jackets. We'll head to the bottom of the fourth when we come back. 30-second break.
SPEAKER_10What makes your home home? Is it a favorite reading corner? A growth chart on the door frame, a bump bed that doubles as a fort? Home is that feeling of warmth and safety. A place where you belong. At Security National Bank, we put thoughtful care and attention into helping you find your place. Not just any place, but your home. Because home matters. Security National Bank. Everything matters. Member FDIC.
SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06As the pitcher goes to his warmups here, we're getting ready for the bottom of the fourth inning. Healan will send Schayner, Carroll, and Gaswent to the plate.
SPEAKER_08Let's go back to that last play, Mike. For those uh young kids that might have been out of here, um, that ball was hit between the left field and and shortstop. And if you notice, JJ had a had a B line on that, but he gave up and and and and moved aside for that left fielder coming in. That's the left fielder's ball. And as soon as that shortstop hears the left fielder say, I got it, he has to get out of the way. Uh the left fielder has priority. And it's the same thing for the center fielder to the left fielder or center fielder to the shortstop. Whenever you're when your outfielder's coming in, he's got priority over that ball. And and JJ did a great job of getting out of the way.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and I mean it doesn't matter how confident you are in your ability. It's much easier to feel the ball coming in then coming in than it is to try to catch it as your running back. And uh JJ, you know, being the veteran that he is, uh, like you said, gave way to Moravic out there. Yep, it's beautiful play. Able to get that third out.
SPEAKER_08All right, boys. Let's get let's let's manufacture a run here.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, with the way Dylan's pitching, uh one run could and should be enough. So uh let's get some guys on base and let's get some runs across the plate. And uh this game's flying by. We are now officially 42 minutes into this baseball game, and we're in the bottom of the fourth inning.
SPEAKER_08I'd like to see him turn on one here with that wind blowing out.
SPEAKER_06Here's the wind up in the pitch. In there for a strike on that outside corner.
SPEAKER_08He likes that outside corner.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Would you suggest maybe taking a step closer to the plate the way he's pitching out? Absolutely. That pitch, well, you wanted it turned on and he turned on it. That ball hit sharply between short and third.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he he turned on that. And and and we're still kind of chuckling from the other night, Mike. He he hit a ball so hard that it knocked the third baseman down against Lamars.
SPEAKER_06I forgot about that. Yeah, it did. It it virtually knocked that kid down. Literally, virtually whatever. Uh brings Tommy Carroll to the plate. Shayner on first with no outs. Pitcher in the windup. Here's the pitch to the plate. Carroll turns on that and hits it sharply, foul down the third baseline for strike one.
SPEAKER_08Nice piece of hitting by Tommy. Just missed it. Uh, you know, and and line that thing foul.
SPEAKER_06Schaener got a fairly sizable lead over there. Carroll hits that, gets under the shortstop's glove. That'll put runners at first and second with no outs. Great job of hitting there by Tommy. He roped that ball.
SPEAKER_08That that'd been a tough play by the shortstop. I gotta give Tommy a hit on that one. That was that was uh a line drive.
SPEAKER_06That shortstop didn't touch that ball. No. Uh we'll we'll see if if our scoring matches the stats that are put into bound. Brings Nathan Gaswin up to the plate. Nathan's got uh opportunity. He's got a couple runners out on the bases to see what he can do. Put the ball in play here, Nathan. First pitch coming in there on the inside corner for strike.
SPEAKER_08I think that's the first pitch I've seen him go inside. I think you're right. Yeah, he's been playing at that outside corner, so here's the pitch.
SPEAKER_06Gas went hit by the pitch there. That's gonna load the bases, folks. There's no place to put anybody.
SPEAKER_08I don't think that probably left a bruise, Mike.
SPEAKER_06I'm gonna guess not. Nathan probably maybe later will think it was a mosquito bite or something. He may scratch it, but that's gonna be it. That brings Blatchford to the plate, stepping in from the left side. Yeah, he's stepping up a little bit this time at the plate. Infield is drawn in with Shaner at third. Blatchford swings at that first pitch and fouls it off. No balls, one strike. Yeah, it's obvious they're gonna try to make a play at the plate if it's hit to the infield.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, all he's gotta do is make some contact. That ball just here's a pitch.
SPEAKER_06On the outside corner for strike two.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, the infield's playing way in. I mean, he he's got so there's obviously a holes between third and third and short, first and second. Pitch. There we go.
SPEAKER_06Bladford hits that between first and second. That's gonna score Shaner. Carroll comes in from second. Thrown out at the plate. Great uh relay there to catch Tommy Carroll at at home.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that was just a beautiful throw by the right fielder. Uh he fielded that shallow right, and you know, I mean, it was a perfect throw. Yeah, and it took a perfect throw to get Tommy.
SPEAKER_06So we've got Gaswin at second, Blatchford at first, and Chase Beck steps in. Healing leads this one one to nothing. Pitch on that outside corner for strike one.
SPEAKER_08I don't mind that, Mike. I don't mind him, you know. Uh Coach Wesselman said from the beginning they were going to be aggressive, and I don't mind that. That's aggressive baseball. And uh, like I said, it took a perfect throw to get him. So, you know, any other right or left in and tell him he's safe at home.
SPEAKER_06Yep. You talk about the aggressiveness, I have to laugh because my son Andrew coached the JV Reserve last year, and I'd come to some of their games, and he would just stand on third base coaching box and he'd just he'd just wave them in. Just they get on base, and it's like just keep going.
SPEAKER_07Here we go.
SPEAKER_06Beck hits that sharply out to center field. Center fielder makes a great play on it for the second out. That was a well-hid ball. Very well hit.
SPEAKER_08And you know, and then the other night uh against Lamar's the way the wind was blowing, that ball would have been in the gap. But tonight, with the the wind blowing out and and and kind of toward the left field, it kind of held it up.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Uh Gas went at second, Blatchford at first, Dylan Knapp steps in. See if Dylan can help his cause here. Yeah, let's get a couple insurance runs here, Dylan. Man, there is a hole between second and short. That shortstop is almost over at third base.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06First pitch in there for a strike.
SPEAKER_08Huge gap between center and right. I mean, if we could if we could just be patient and put that ball over the second baseman's head, you're gonna run forever.
SPEAKER_06Mind up in the pitch. He hits it down the right field line, right fielder's on the run, makes a great running catch. We wanted them to make contact on the ball, and they did. A couple of them were just right at it. Uh so at the end of four, Bishop Healin won, Thomas Jefferson zero. We'll be back for the fifth inning here shortly.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Well, John Healan made good contact that inning, was able to get a run across, and probably could have done a lot more damage, except uh that Thomas Jefferson outfield did a great job uh running balls down.
SPEAKER_08All three outs. Uh center fielder made a nice play in the gap. Uh right fielder obviously made it just a tremendous play on that overhand catch, and then uh the right fielder also that play at home play. So uh yeah, we scored two or three runs there. Balls ten feet more to the right, ten feet more to the left. You know, we we emptied the bases.
SPEAKER_06Yep. I'd like to uh give a shout out to some more of our underwriters of Catholic Radio, drilling Morningside Pharmacy, Dunes Dental for Kids, Empirical Foods, FM Wealth Management, Matt Lawler, Falk Brothers Plumbing, Greenville Pharmacy, and Greg and Christy Yoakum. We appreciate uh your support. And Thomas Jefferson will send Townsend, Norton, and Persinger to the plate here in the top of the fifth inning. Knapp with the wind up, and here's a pitch. Hits sharply to Shaner at third base, fields it, makes throw to first, in time.
SPEAKER_08Beautiful play to the left side by Shaner. Uh you know, he's fielding that ball clean. Uh in both games so far. He fields it clean, and he only had the one hiccup there on that. Uh, the one that, you know, he had to make a he would have had to make a tremendous play to get him.
SPEAKER_06So Dillon ready to deliver to Norton. Here's the pitch. Outside corner for strike one. Almost don't need to wait for the umpire to raise his hand because it's he's right where it needs to be, and I think we could call it from up here. Here's the pitch. This will be a heck of a play.
SPEAKER_08Slow roller to JJ Hope off the bottom of his glove. He would have had to make a tremendous play uh to get him. That was a slow roller uh in between the pitcher and the shortstop. I mean, he would have had to bare hand that thing and and just have a tremendous throw and and uh you've got to give him a base hit on that.
SPEAKER_06You're right. I think he was thinking about the throw before he made the catch.
SPEAKER_08So um even even if he feels that clean, I don't I don't know if he gets him. That guy, that kid was getting down the line pretty quick.
SPEAKER_06Norton's at first, Persinger steps in, struck out looking first time up. Napp checks the runner, delivers to the plate, right across the plate for strike one. No balls, one strike.
SPEAKER_08I think Peyton having a little conversation with the um. I don't know what that went on there, but they're both laughing.
SPEAKER_06Here's Dylan with the pitch. Foul ball down the first baseline. Just foul. Just caught that thing just to the just to the left. Just barely. I would have, as a coach, I'd have felt a lot better if he would have let it go instead of touching it where he did. But uh regardless. Snowballs, two strikes. We need to get a roster because there's a pinch runner for Thomas Jefferson. I'm not sure who it is.
SPEAKER_08I've got a roster right here.
SPEAKER_06That ball fouled off at the plate. Can you see the number on him, Mike? No, he won't turn around. He did earlier, but want to make sure that if they get in the game, we want to we want to get them on the radio and and give them some fanfare. So if we can see it, we'll let you know. Dylan ready to deliver. Here's the pitch. He got him looking for strike three.
SPEAKER_08Gorgeous pitch. He has, I'll tell you what, that is a absolute wicked pitch. That curveball that and that comes right at the at the batter and then breaks at the end. Just just beautiful inside corner pitch.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, fantastic job. Brings the designated hitter Grant up to the plate. First pitch. Low and outside for ball one. Dylan's got five K's and three of them. They've stood and watched it go by.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's he's really feeling it. Come back on the inside corner here, Peyton. This kid's gonna step right toward the plate. Pitch a little low there. Just missed. Two balls, no strikes. If you watch where this kid, you know, he's standing and he's got that back foot, but when he takes his stride, he's right on the right on the line.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. Bounces in there for ball three. Tate no look to settle Dylan down here just a little bit and say, I'm I'm putting it where it needs to be. You just throw to the glove.
SPEAKER_08This is one of those young players that uh coach from Thomas Jefferson was talking about, just a sophomore.
SPEAKER_06That pitch outside for ball four. Had nice at bat. Puts runners at first and second with two outs. That brings Heinek to the plate.
SPEAKER_08And he was a little outside on that last batter, and I'm I'm almost wondering if going going from the wind up, you know, he hasn't had to do that.
SPEAKER_06That ball bounced to Hope at short. Throw to Blatchford at first for the out. Nice easy play. So Thomas Jefferson gets two runners on, isn't able to push anything across. After five, it's healing one, Thomas Jefferson zero. We'll be back in 30 seconds.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Welcome back, everybody. As we head to the bottom of the fifth inning, Healan will send up the top of the order. Uh JJ Hope, Peyton Erickson, and Caleb Lefaver. It'd be nice to get some runners on and bring some more runs across and give Dylan some offensive help here in this inning. Those three guys sound like runs.
SPEAKER_08So uh let's see. Last uh their last go-around, uh, we loaded the bases up, so let's see if we can empty them this time.
SPEAKER_06Finishing up the uh, you know, it's this time of the game where the grill starts to the smoke and the aroma really starts to come up here and I can smell it. Makes it tough to focus on baseball, but uh we'll have to hold off till between games.
SPEAKER_08I know I said it the other night, but man, this field, this field, get out here and watch these uh Crusaders play. This field looks absolutely beautiful. It's just a great setting. Uh sitting here on the campus of Briar Cliff College, the hill hill over there and behind left field, but uh they've done a just a superb job getting this field to the point where it is now.
SPEAKER_06Pitcher and catcher getting those last second uh instructions between each other and catcher heading back to behind home plate. And JJ Hope will step in to lead things off for the Crusaders. Healing leads this one one to nothing. We're in the bottom of the fifth inning. I'd love to see him lay one down third here, Mike.
SPEAKER_08I would just love it. They're playing deep enough. Yeah, they are. Yeah, he's about five feet behind third base at least.
SPEAKER_06There's a bunch of deer running out along the outside the outfield fence there. There's four of them. Heading down Rebecca. That first pitch was outside for ball one.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that ball got away from him just a little.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that that pitch was in the 51101 area code. Zip code, it was way outside. Wind up in the pitch. Outside again for ball three. Oh, here we go. Three and one. JJ's just sitting beautiful, man. Pitcher starts his wind up. That pitch in there for a strike. Three balls, one strike. Here's the delivery of the plate. Beautiful. Hits that sharply over the pitcher's head out into center field for a base hit.
SPEAKER_08No, that's what I was talking about. Being patient, Mike. You know, he he he's he got back on that on that back leg and got back in the back of the batter's box and just waited. And didn't get over anxious and took it right up the middle. Just like you're taught.
SPEAKER_06Excellent job of hitting there. Bring to the plate Peyton Erickson. Uh JJ is already seven or eight steps off first base.
SPEAKER_08I yeah, tell you what, I this kid's been throwing a lot of first pitch strikes. I I'd be hit and running right now. Yeah, he's first pitch.
SPEAKER_06He's got the pitcher nervous. Pitcher stepped off and collected himself. That ball a little high for ball one to Peyton. One ball, no strikes.
SPEAKER_08I'm sure he is going on one of these pitches. There he goes.
SPEAKER_06There he goes. Pitch high in there rather easily for a stolen base. Here we go. Hope over to second. Count on Erickson's two balls, no strikes. You have to wonder, as aggressive as they've been, are they gonna try to steal third?
SPEAKER_08Well, let's let's see. I mean, he's more than capable.
SPEAKER_06He has got it's got to be nine, ten step lead off off second base there. Swing and a miss by Erickson there. He's challenging this pitcher to turn and throw.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's a second baseman just staying there. That that spot between second and first is just wide open. If he can get it over there, I mean you're gonna run forever.
SPEAKER_06He's got an eight-step lead out there, folks. That ball was that pitch was a ball. It's three balls, one strike.
SPEAKER_08And they're challenging Erickson to take it to right field. I mean, watch that second baseman. He's just staying right there on the base.
SPEAKER_06Pitch outside for a ball, ball four. Erickson draws the walk, runners at first and second, and brings Caleb Lefaver to the plate. And Heaton headed over to pinch run for Erickson. Caleb just ripped one last time and right to the right fielder. Yeah, he made really solid contact. Right. Right fielder's playing a little deeper this time than he was the last time. He's wind up in the pitch. Way outside for ball one. One ball, no strikes.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, Caleb. Caleb looks extremely comfortable in there.
SPEAKER_06Pitcher looks in, here's the pitch. Way outside for ball two. You can tell they don't want to give him anything good to hear. They know who he is. Caleb, of course, is signed with the University of Iowa.
SPEAKER_08Another pitch way outside. He'll join Bleaker on that pitching staff. That'd be kind of kind of neat having a Healing Healing combo up there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that would be cool. I you know, they're trying to pitch around him. I'm not so sure the way Shayner swings the bat that you want to you want to bring him up with the bases loaded, but that pitch was even farther outside than the first three. So Caleb draws the walk. Yeah, he's loads the bases and brings up Shayner with no outs. Healing leads this one one to nothing and has a chance to do a lot more damage here in a short amount of time. Yeah, we have a chance to really open this up.
SPEAKER_08And the way he's been swinging the bat, I mean, just make contact. We're gonna score a run.
SPEAKER_06Infield drawing in to try to cut down the run at the plate. Unless he bounces it, I don't see Shaner hitting one in the infield, John. That pitch was outside for ball one.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, the way he's been swinging, the way he's been hitting the ball. I don't know if I'd want to move any farther in that third baseman.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. He turns on that one. Right fielder goes back, or left fielder goes back. Foul. It was over the fence, folks, but it was foul. Just missed.
SPEAKER_08The way that took off that thing was, you know, but that wind's blowing just from left. It's blowing out and then to the left field pole, so it took it.
SPEAKER_06That would have that would have been a welcome to the Healing baseball family there. A grand slam in your third game. I don't think he's gonna get another pitch like that. I don't think so. Here's the pitch. In there for strike two, one ball, two strikes. Shamer has scored the only run of the game for Healen. He singled his last time up, flew out to the left fielder the first time. Man, heaton is halfway to third base. Yes. I realize he can't go anywhere, but Shaner fouls that pitch off. One ball, two strikes. Way to battle, young man. Way to battle. Caleb's about 15 steps off first. They all know they're not going to be held on. I haven't seen if JJ's close enough to home where he can just take two steps when it's hit.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he is literally right behind the shortstop.
SPEAKER_06There's a wind up in the pitch. Bounces in there. Brings a count to two balls, two strikes. Again, Healing leads one to nothing with a chance to really blow this game open here. In this inning, bases loaded, no outs. Infield to weigh in. And there's a big gap between center and right. He turns on that one, folks. Left fielder said, you can kiss that one. Good night. That's a grand slam home run for Brody Shaner. Welcome to Healing Baseball. That was something else. And it I don't know why the left fielder took so many steps back because when it was hit, it was gone. We don't have VLO and launch angle and all that other stuff, but I'm telling you, that was that was out in a hurry. That was hotter than Council O'Caffey when it was leaving the field. I can tell you that. Where to go, young man? All right, that makes a score five to nothing. There's still no outs here in the bottom of the fifth, and we are gonna have a visit to the mound. So let's take a one-minute break, and we will be back.
SPEAKER_11You're listening to FM 88.1, KFHC, Ponka Sioux City, and KOIA, Storm Lake, Siouxland Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06But they decided to leave the pitcher in.
SPEAKER_08Looks like number five Tanner Horton or Tanner Norton will be pitching. He's out there throwing from the right side. Just a freshman. This is one of those young players that Coach Jay Thomas Jefferson was talking about.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he's he's moving over from third base to pitch. Trying to see who moved into third base in his spot.
SPEAKER_08Let's get back to Tommy Carroll's uh hit. You know, he sat back, just like we talked about, Mike. He sat back and he just drove that ball like literally right over the pitcher's, you know, right shoulder. Uh I mean a line drive, just a like a we call it a frozen rope single. And just a just a beautiful piece of hitting for Tommy Carroll. Just a freshman himself.
SPEAKER_06Looks like Heinek has moved over to third base for Thomas Jefferson. So now we just need to figure out who they put on first base.
SPEAKER_08Nice job by Mergen for Thomas Jefferson uh to hold our bats, you know, in sync the way he way he did for basically five and a half innings. Uh well, not quite five and a half innings, but you know, uh he did a good job, and I'm sure uh coach after the game that that'll be one of the positives that that he gets out of this game.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Mergen did move over to first base, so it was just a swapping of infielders here. So this will be the first time we get to see Harpinaw at the plate.
SPEAKER_08What an athlete, Zach Harpineau, what a senior year he's having. Uh, of course, going to Morningside College, and he's going to continue his football career there.
SPEAKER_06No outs for Healen, runner at first, four runs in this inning. Healan leads Thomas Jefferson five to nothing. Pitch outside for a ball, ball one.
SPEAKER_08Shout out to his mom and dad, just wonderful people. Of course, Deb does so much for the the Healan auction every year.
SPEAKER_06Wind up in the pitch. Swing and a miss by Harpinoff for strike one. One ball, one strike. Nice cut by Zach. Pitcher from the stretch. Delivers to the plate. Good job of framing that. That was a little bit outside, but he was able to pull it back in for strike two. One ball, two strikes.
SPEAKER_08Comes with a little bit more velocity than the first pitcher, Mike.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, there's there's no lobbing here. That was a breaking ball in there for strike three. Caught Harpenall looking for the first out. Brings up Beckett Blatchford. Beckett had a nice single last time at bat. Tommy Carroll at first. Blatchford at the plate. See if Tommy takes a lead and pitch inside to Blatchford for ball one.
SPEAKER_08This looks like it's coming 90 miles an hour compared to the last guy. I'm sure that's an eye-opener for these batters.
SPEAKER_06That pitch outside for ball two. Yeah, this is first one was slow pitch softball, and this one is fast pitch softball, which you know all about, John. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, just just a tad.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. One that he wanted to break but didn't. Three balls, no strikes to count to Blatchford. Tommy Carroll down at first base. Healand leads this five to nothing. With only one out.
SPEAKER_08I'd like to get a couple more runs here. Here we go.
SPEAKER_06Another pitch way outside for ball four. Nice piece of hitting by by Blatchford, being patient at the plate. Carroll heads down to second. Runners at first and second with one out. Brings Chase Beck to the plate. Chase has popped out and flew out to center field his two times up. Checks a runner at first, checks back to second. Beck squares as if he's gonna bunt, but the pitch is way outside for ball one.
SPEAKER_08Not a bad idea where that third baseman was playing. That was not a bad idea.
SPEAKER_06And he did not come in. So oh, that pitch is over Chase's head for ball two. He started to square again, and uh good thing it was high, or he'd have taken probably taken it between the eyes on that one. Two balls, no strikes. Runners at first and second. Healing leads five to nothing with a chance to bring some more runs across here. Pitch bounces in there for ball three, three balls, no strikes. Needs to come in with this one, or he's gonna fill the bases with Crusaders.
SPEAKER_08Very patient. Good at bat for Chase. This is a very good at bat.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. Nice. That pitch is high for ball four. That will load the bases for healing and bring Dylan Knapp to the plate.
SPEAKER_08Al Dylan can really help his cause here, Mike.
SPEAKER_06He's got a got to feel pretty good having a 5-0 lead. And uh now he doesn't need to press too much. All he has to do is just make contact and and put the ball in play. Have to imagine the way things, the way Thomas Jefferson's been playing when the base has been loaded before, they're gonna bring the infield in.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, with one out, I I would imagine they're gonna they're gonna be at regular distance here. Try to turn it up the middle, you know, on a hard on a hard hit single. Or uh excuse me, ground ball.
SPEAKER_06Pitch inside to Dillon for ball one. Yeah, the only one that's really come in is the first baseman, and he's up on the He's just up on the lip. That pitch inside to Dylan again for ball two, two balls, no strikes. Again, there's no place to put this Crusader. If it's a walk, it's a it's another run for the Crusaders. So he needs to come across here with the pitch, and here's the pitch. That pitch is high for ball three. Yeah, he'll be taken all the way here. Three balls, no strikes. Yeah, I I would make him throw strikes. He's walked two consecutive batters.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's having a little trouble finding the finding the zone. He's been a little high.
SPEAKER_06That pitch right in there for a strike. Three balls, one strike. Base is full of Crusaders. Healing leads five to nothing, looking to add some more. That pitch is inside, almost hit him for ball four.
SPEAKER_08He's lucky to get out of the way on that one.
SPEAKER_06That will bring Tommy Carroll across the plate. Leaves the bases loaded and brings JJ Hope back up. He started this inning with a single and scored on the grand slam by Shaner.
SPEAKER_08This game can get away from him in a hurry here.
SPEAKER_06That pitch is inside to JJ for ball one. Yeah, the catcher's been out to make a visit, and that that didn't help settle him down. You have to wonder how long they're gonna let him go before.
SPEAKER_08You know, he's got good velocity, just a young freshman. Uh out there for TJ. Here's the pitch.
SPEAKER_06Right across there for strike. One ball, one strike.
SPEAKER_08And you almost got you gotta take that. I mean, he he hasn't been able to find the zone, so I'm I'm sure he uh you know, being patient and being a good contact hitter, JJ had no problem waiting for that kid to throw throw strike.
SPEAKER_06Here's the pitch. That pitch is high for ball two, two balls, one strike. Yep. Yeah, that that did not do at all what he wanted done. Here's a wind up in the pitch, another pitch high. Three balls, one strike. So he's he's gotta come with the strike here, or he's gonna walk in another run. Healing scored five this inning, it's now six to nothing. That pitch is low and outside for ball four, that will score another run. Makes a score seven to nothing. All the runners advance one base. Catcher's telling him to just settle down, throw some strikes. Brings Peyton Erickson to the plate, who's done a good job putting the bat on the ball this season so far. That pitch is high for ball one. Beck on third, nap on second, JJ Hope at first. One out, Halen lead seven to nothing. Pitch is high for ball two. You gotta figure if if this gets through and it's hit deep enough, JJ's gonna try to score from first.
SPEAKER_08Oh, no question. No question. I mean, and and just and watch the lead that he gets. I I mean he's he's he's back there by the pitcher. Or by the first baseman behind him.
SPEAKER_06That pitch on the outside corner for a strike, two balls, one strike. Here's the wind up. Delivery to the plate. Another one of those evas pitches for ball three, three balls, one strike.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, we can really. I mean, obvious obviously we've really opened it up here. We can we can manufacture a few more runs, we can make a short game of this. Here's the pitch.
SPEAKER_06Inside for ball four, walks in another run. Makes a score eight to nothing.
SPEAKER_08Do you see any uh any movement?
SPEAKER_06I don't see anybody out there in the bullpen warming up.
SPEAKER_08Nothing. I think Coach is gonna let this kid uh I think he's gonna let him try to get out of the inning.
SPEAKER_06Just as I was gonna say, Erickson at first, uh, we have our pinch runner Heaton at first. JJ Hope at second. Pitch inside to Caleb for ball one. And Dylan Knapp at third.
SPEAKER_08That's not a not that's not a bad spot to throw Lefavre if you're gonna if you're gonna pitch to him.
SPEAKER_06But uh pitch way outside for ball two. I I realize he's a left-handed hitter, but he can he can hit to all fields. And they're the center fielder is virtually over in right field, folks, playing defense here. That pitch is way outside for ball three. Three balls, no strikes. Base is full of Crusaders.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, we saw that the other night. He he he sprayed one to left field, he sprayed one down the first baseline, and tonight he's uh you know, he's been up the middle.
SPEAKER_06That pitch is outside for ball four. Another run will walk across. Makes a score nine to nothing.
SPEAKER_08You know, and this is just indicative of what what their coach said before the game. He says, you know, when we're throwing strikes, we're competitive. And it's when it's it's it's when our pitchers can't find the plate like they did the other night, and that's kind of exactly what's happening right now.
SPEAKER_06Healing leads this game nine to nothing. Shayner at the plate with the bases loaded. Do we get two in one inning here? I you know what? Here's a pitch. Hits that between third and short. That'll score hope from third. And that makes it ten to nothing, folks.
SPEAKER_08We still got the bases loaded with one out. I thought he was gonna send heating, but you know what? I get that. I mean, there's no there's no uh use in in uh making a play.
SPEAKER_06And that'll run rule it, folks. Healing scores nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning uh and wins his first game against Thomas Jefferson ten to nothing. Uh we'll take a 30-second break and be right back.

SPEAKER_03And now back to your crusader sports on your Catholic radio station.
SPEAKER_06Well, folks, Healan wins that game 10 to nothing, scoring nine runs in the bottom of in the bottom of the fifth inning to finish that one off. And we've got a guest in the uh booth here. I'm gonna turn it over to John and Coach Taylor, and he's gonna tell us all the great things that Healing did that game. And uh it's Catholic Radio, remember that. All right.
SPEAKER_08Hi, we got uh Coach Ben Taylor up here. Uh gonna talk a little bit about the first game. Um, Coach, the job that Dylan Knapp did pitching tonight, can you talk a little bit about that?
SPEAKER_02What yeah, really excited. First outing for him, a lot of strikes. It was kind of a concern at first to make sure he's consistently in the zone because he's got great, great stuff. But having him fill it up and getting balls in play, um, exactly what you want to do against a team like that. He ended up piling up a few strikeouts, but um just getting him in the groove for the season and having him be competitive was was a good show for him for sure.
SPEAKER_08Mike and I were talking as the game went on. Uh you could just you could just see how comfortable and in sync he was with Peyton. Uh Peyton was barely moving. Um talk a little bit about how he was spotting the ball on the corners.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's he's got a little bit of a unique delivery, and um it it's pretty deceptive to the hitters, kind of a lower three-quarters, and kind of comes out of about the dugout. You know, he works way off to the side, he throws out of the side, and so every ball has got move on it, even if he's throwing it straight. So then his stuff has tons of break on it too, so it's really deceptive to the hitters, and they've just got a lot of reps together. I mean, Peyton's seen a lot of pitches from him, so he can anticipate it better than the hitters.
SPEAKER_08That curve ball he throws on the inside corner is it's almost unhittable at times.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, especially to righties. It looks like it's starting, you know, behind you. Yeah you're gonna take it all the way or you let it hit you, and and he ends up busting guys in, which is pretty rare for a high schooler. Right. You know, the a lot of high school guys that don't want to hit anybody, they don't want to make any mistakes. Dylan's confident enough to throw inside, so he he can get a lot of guys out, sawing them off inside.
SPEAKER_08I talked to Coach Wesselman before the game, and and obviously he wanted to be aggressive, but he also says something about not getting complacent. And I know this first pitcher, uh the velocity obviously is a factor because you're you're so anxious when you get up to the plate. And we noticed that in the first few innings, but it looked like obviously the guys uh settled back, got back in the plate, and were a lot more patient the second, third, and fourth time around.
SPEAKER_02You've got to make an adjustment, and and facing a pitcher that slow is not something that we always train for. It what it's it's really frustrating for the staff, obviously, and the the players. No one wants to get out, but infield pop-ups, high fly balls, just not being productive, really being on your front foot, um, making some easy outs for them. So just keeping your weight back, having a strong top hand, getting the ball in play. You know, JJ, uh Tommy, you see some of those contact hitters have more success at first, and then kind of the guys second time through the order, we get in a little bit of a groove. Obviously, Brody with the with the big slam.
SPEAKER_08But welcome to Bishop Heal in baseball, huh?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's pretty fun. And he ended up getting the walk-off, you know, the 10-run walk-off. So um eventually you find your groove and and you make the adjustments that we needed. Obviously, the coaches wanted to jump on that kid in the first inning, but sometimes that's baseball. You gotta make an adjustment. We still ended up with the mercy rule, so so it's overall still still a good performance.
SPEAKER_08What are we looking forward to here in the second game? Can you talk a little bit about Aiden Lefavre and the stuff we're gonna see from him?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Aiden, um obviously we're all aware of Caleb, so he he's fit in well with the team, and uh lots of lots of punt at square jokes and you know genetic duplicates. So um just look for him to establish his fastball again. He'll be a little bit more over the top, um, but just got to throw strikes, and especially against the team that's towards the bottom of the conference. Um just just filling it up, putting balls in play. It's a game he's played plenty, right? So he's an eighth grader, and there's gonna be some nerves to that, and just remind him, you know, it's still 60 feet, six inches, everything else is still the same. You've got a great team behind you. J just go do what you've always always done.
SPEAKER_08So I've uh I I'd have to go back and look, but I I think other than maybe that bad throw uh to first base in in the Lamar's game, I don't think we've made an error. Oh, we did.
SPEAKER_02We had one error in uh Tommy Tommy Tommy had that one roll, and we we ended up getting an out of it out of the ditch.
SPEAKER_08Gorgeous play at home, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Tough tough ball for JJ here. Um I told the boys that that's an infield single. That would have been an incredible play for him to come up with.
SPEAKER_08We ruled that. Even if he clean, even if he feels that clean, I I don't I don't know if he gets them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, JJ's been fantastic, but our our defense is a Chase Beck is really smooth at second base. I mean, he might be a shortstop if we don't have JJ. Or maybe later in the season, JJ gets on the mound, but we've got multiple shortstops. Obviously, Peyton's an elite catcher, uh, so we're really happy with the defense. Just just a little bit of offensive woes and trying to settle into the season. We'll we'll get in rhythm.
SPEAKER_08Well, thank you for your time uh coming up here and talking about that first game. We're we're excited to see uh the young LeFavor pitch the second game, and uh and good luck, Coach.
SPEAKER_02Should be good. We'll try and get Coach Wes up here after game two. He's a man of few words, so he sent me. I could do some of the talking. All right. Thanks, fellas. You bet.
SPEAKER_06Thank you, man. All right, I'd like to thank Coach Taylor for stopping up and uh giving his insight on that first game and what we can look forward to for game two. We're gonna take a five minute break and then we'll be back to talk some more about uh game one. Uh we'll have a couple special guests and we'll get ready for game two. So we'll be back in five minutes.
SPEAKER_05At Mill Schohelmer Pitts and Associates, we understand.
