SPEAKER_06

For regularly scheduled programming to bring you this broadcast of Crusader Sport. We would like to thank the donors, benefactors, and sponsors that make this broadcast possible. We now send you straight to the action on your Catholic Radio Station, channel 88.1 FM, AFHC Ponka Su City, K-O-I-A Storm Lake.

SPEAKER_09

And we are ready for what promises to be a good one. We've got the number three ranked in 3A Bishop Healing Crusaders ready to take on the number one ranked team in 4A Sioux City East Black Raiders. John?

SPEAKER_16

Well, Mike, we have been looking forward to this doubleheader for how long? Well, since since the schedule came out and you and I found out we were going to be uh doing play by play in color, it's uh got win, middle of the road wind going straight out of left field, which uh you know uh could come into play today, I would say, with all the hitters we got on both teams.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's uh much like the lineup that East put together last year, it's uh it's a murderer's row, and we'll get through the uh the batting order and starting lineups for uh both teams here pretty quickly.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's the the the atmosphere is absolutely incredible, Mike, and and both coaches said their teams are fired up, ready to go. And uh after you give the lineup or or what have you here, Mike, I'm gonna go over a little bit of what uh Coach Miller from East said and what a little bit what Coach uh Jacob Wesselman said for Healing.

SPEAKER_09

All right, we'll go ahead and get the batting orders and starting lineups put together here. Uh for the visiting Siouxity East Black Raiders. They come into this game with a record of 16 and 1. They are 11-1 in the Missouri River Activities Conference, and they're on a nine-game winning streak. They will lead off Cal Jepson. He will be playing short step. Batting third will be Callan Cook. He'll be playing second base, batting average of 535. Batting fourth and pitching for Sioux City East today is Bodie Colling. He comes in with a batting average of 417. His pitching record for the year, he's started three games. He comes in with a record of 2-1. Teams have a batting average of 217 against him. He's given up 10 hits, 10 runs. Five of those have been earned, five walks, hit two batters, struck out 14. So he's he's coming in with a really good record. And following him in the lineup, batting fifth will be Cal Christensen. He'll be playing center field. He comes in with the 447 batting average. Batting seventh will be Frankie Steuze playing first base. And of the starters, he's got the lowest batting average, and it's still 300. So uh, like I said, folks, it's a murderous row. Uh batting eighth will be Austin Leander playing left field, batting average of 400. And batting ninth for Sioux City East will be Quentin Ashcraft. He's playing right field and has a batting average of 400. For the Crusaders, leading off, JJ Hope playing shortstop, comes in with the 364 average. Batting second will be Peyton Erickson. He'll be playing catcher, comes in with a batting average of 238. DHing for the Crusaders tonight will be Caleb Lefaver. Batting 489, he will be DH for Hendrix Heaton, who will be playing second base. Brody Shaner batting fourth, playing first base tonight. First time we've seen him over there at first base. He comes in with a batting average of 333. Batting fifth, Tommy. First time we've seen Chase over at third. He's got a batting batting average of 250. And probably the most improved hitter in the lineup the last two weeks, John, is Dylan Knapp. He'll be playing center field, and he's got a batting average of 342.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's uh the matchups uh and the game within the game that's gonna go on today is incredible. I had a chance to talk to both coaches, Mike. Uh first coach Miller uh from East, uh nine grad of East uh Morning then went out and played baseball. Morningside came back to his alma mater to coach. Um he doesn't make any bones about that they are a good hitting team, and he he knows it. He says we have good hitters.

They will be in all white uniforms with blue letters, gold caps with the blue HC on the front.

SPEAKER_03

White cap, white drive outside, white letters across the front.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, those aren't the quite the tops you really want to wear when it's 95 degrees out. But you you know, you and I have talked about the heat, Mike, and you you know, I told you my opinion on it. I just love playing in this weather, um, especially as a catcher. Uh I mean you're loose and you know, there's no tightness, and any tightness you had, then you work out. So it looks like they're gonna do the national anthem before the first game, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, normally we don't do that. Usually between games. If that's the case, we're gonna take a uh let's take a two-minute break for the national anthem and we will be back.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic Radio Station.

SPEAKER_09

We will be ready to go here shortly. He comes into this game with a record of 2-1. Teams are hitting 2.17 against him. He's given up 10 hits, 10 runs, 5 of those earned. He's walked five, hit two batters, and struck out 14. He's got an ERA of 3.00. And as we talked about a little earlier, he is going to be facing kind of like the old Yankees back in the what 1920s.

SPEAKER_16

So they know what to expect coming up to bat. It's just a matter of, you know, whether Gas couldn't hit those corners.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch by Nathan to Jepsen. He's out to center field. Dylan Knapp chases it to the fence. Jepsen's heading for third. And he's in there. Slides in safely with the triple. So Jepsen starts the game off for these tie black Raiders with the triple. That will bring it up catcher Logan Cherkis.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's going to be trouble today, Mike. Anytime you get the ball, he lifted that ball high. And anytime you lift the ball high today, that thing's going to carry. That wind's going straight out left field, and he hit that thing to dead left center. And Dylan, who's got a ton of speed, just couldn't catch up.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, with it with his speed, you could tell the wind had an effect on that. Good pitch. First pitch to Cherkis. Check swing. He went around. That's strike one. No balls one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I like it. Gas one come right back on the inside corner to Cherkis. You know, and not afraid.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan looks in. Here's the wind up. In there for strike two.

SPEAKER_16

Beautiful.

SPEAKER_16

That's good waste pitch.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. That ball's popped up. Shaner gives chase. Unable to make the play. Count remains one ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Boy, I I don't like like how shallow we're playing right now with that wind blowing out.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

Two outs here, top of the first, East Leeds one to nothing. On a leadoff triple by Cal Jepson, and he was sacrificed home by Logan Cherkis. First pitch in there for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's he's definitely got command of his pitches tonight. He's hitting spots.

SPEAKER_09

They currently trail one to nothing. JJ Hope steps in. He will be facing Bodie Colling, who has a record of three and oh. Batting average teams against him.043. He's given up two hits. No earn runs, nine walks. He's hit one batter and struck out 23.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, good curveball in there for a strike, that first pitch. And I like the idea of JJ thinking to lay one down there.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch. That pitch high for ball one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Culling going to Kirkwood uh uh Kirkwood Community College to play baseball next year. Nice.

SPEAKER_09

There's a good piece of hit and that ball hit right past the first baseman. JJ Hope with the single. So Healing gets their first guy on, just like East did. That brings Peyton Erickson to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Great job of inside out hitting, getting that fist. Really did a nice job waiting on it, you know, keeping that weight back.

SPEAKER_09

Be interesting to see if a game in a game of this magnitude if if they've got JJ running early here. He goes.

SPEAKER_16

No, a little hit and run right off the bat.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch fouled out of play down the first baseline.

SPEAKER_16

I like it.

SPEAKER_09

No balls, one strike. Yeah, he was he was off as the windup started.

SPEAKER_16

So I don't think Coach Welsman's gonna change his philosophy. Uh I mean they've been aggressive the whole year.

SPEAKER_09

Throw over. Yeah. JJ back in time. Bodie's got a pretty quick move over there.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, the pitcher uh uh pitcher Cullen, he's going to Kirkwood, and he's gonna be playing against this catcher next year. He'll be going to Ellsworth.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch is high for ball one, one ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Two of the four players, just that I'm looking at one, two, three, four, five players that they got going to college play baseball next year. He's gonna lose quite a bit.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Oh. Almost had him. Almost had JJ leaning the wrong way. He was able to get back in just under the tag.

SPEAKER_16

A little too close for comfort, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

That's a pretty clear. The guy at the plate, which is the one who can normally hurt you, but with JJ Hope speed, if he can get down to second and he's in scoring position. That pitch fouled off. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Oh, there's no question, you're gonna get something to hit with. He's putting it right around the plate, every pitch. He hasn't wasted one yet.

SPEAKER_09

Even when he's calling comes set.

SPEAKER_16

Piece of hit.

SPEAKER_09

Faldoff out of play down the first baseline again.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, they're playing him to take the ball between center and right. And you see their their outfielders are working over. Center fielders over between closer to the right fielder, and right fielders playing the line.

SPEAKER_09

There's a nice gap out between center and left. Yeah. Throw over again. JJ back in plenty of time.

SPEAKER_16

Well, he he knows what JJ can do. This isn't his first time he's played against him.

SPEAKER_09

So he's a pitch. Outside, ball two, two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_13

Normally it's Heaton, but it's Cal Geese who just finished up a stellar soccer season, first team All-Missouri River Activities Conference on the soccer field, and now he's bringing those talents to the baseball field.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, we'll talk about it.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We're back here on a beautiful sunny day. Great day for baseball. We're going to the top of the second inning. East High scored their run in the top of the first on a triple by Cal Jepson, and he was sacrificed home by Logan Cherkis. And then Healand scored theirs. JJ Hope singled. And scored on base hit by Peyton Erickson. So we are one to one. East will send up Cal Chamberlain.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, situation baseball, Mike, and that's exactly what uh each half of the inning presented. I mean, East Jepson, great hitter, gets the ball up in the air, gets a triple out of it. They set you know bring him over on the on the ground ball, and then of course, we manufacture the run with just some nice hit and run.

SPEAKER_09

That first pitch into Chamberlain for a strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, a good curveball on the inside corner.

unknown

That's why it's going to scream on the ball now.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch by Nathan. Outside for ball one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Of course, Chamberlain's a familiar name. I mean, we faced him last year at North, and uh the transfer over to East here just added to their lineup.

SPEAKER_09

Swing and a miss, strike two, one ball, two strikes. Fooled him a little bit on that one.

SPEAKER_16

Oh yeah. Had a changeup. I mean, he's really got that. I mean, it's truly just a wiggle, and it thing is really, he's really got that on today.

SPEAKER_09

Slow roller back to Gaswent. To Shaner at first for the out. Out number one. That will bring McCaffrey to the plate. Really good start for Nathan so far.

SPEAKER_16

You know, even the first pitch that Jepsen takes to the left center is a good pitch outside corner. You know, Jepsen just a better piece of hitting, really. Uh other than that, Nathan's really been hitting the corners. That's gonna be a tough one. Get over there.

SPEAKER_09

That ball drops in. McCaffrey had it for second. Hit that down the right field line, and it kind of fell in the Bermuda Triangle out there.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, have the all three of them circling it. You know, I'd like, I mean, I'd like to see somebody lay out for that one. That was definitely a catchable ball. I I mean, and I don't know if they all just backed off because they thought they were gonna run into each other or something, or or what, but Frankie Steu steps in.

SPEAKER_09

Of the starters, he has the lowest batting average, which is still 300. So that'll tell you how good this lineup is. Nathan looks back to second, delivers to the plate, way outside ball one, one ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

You know, and as a pitcher, that's that's a little disheartening when when you do when you do your job and you get the hitter to do what you wanted to do is basically a pop-up and then it falls in. I mean, it it can it can defeat you a little bit, but but Nathan, you know, I mean he's a battle. He'll come back on this guy.

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, no strikes, the count to Steuze. Austin Leander would be due up next. Nathan comes set. Here's delivery. Fouled off into the east dugout for strike one. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Did you see how he's striding toward that to the right corner of the box, Mike? I mean, this would be a perfect time for Nathan to just sneak that thing in on the outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Well, he hit that.

SPEAKER_09

Gets it out to Dylan center field. That's over his head. He's gonna have to run that down. One run will score. Steuze on his way to third. Steuze in with the triple. That's the second triple of the game for the East High Black Raiders. That makes a score two to one here in the top of the second. One out, and that will bring Leander to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, any other part of the field, that thing's out. He just happened to hit it to the 4-0 mark on the on the warning track. So just a good piece of hitting. Uh not a bad pitch. Um got the barrel of the bat on it.

SPEAKER_09

There's a pitch by Nathan. Inside ball one. One ball, no strikes. Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss. Strike one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's really got that inside pitch working. Um pitch on the outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

That was a backdoor curve ball. That thing started over about the middle of the opposite batter's box and just curved and hit the black as it was coming across.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan comes set, ready to deal. Here it is. Swing and a miss, strike three. Strikeout number two for Gaswin tonight. That is out number two in the inning. That will bring Ashcraft to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

It'd be nice to keep this just the one run and minimize the damage of that triple.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan Deals. Inside ball one. One ball, no strikes to Ashcraft. Cal Jepson do up next.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, this is a huge out. I mean, you don't want Jepsen at the plate with two guys on.

SPEAKER_09

Long look in. Here's the pitch. That pitch outside for ball two. Two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, nice pitch on the outside. Got it out there about a half foot on the outside of the left left side of the plate.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Boy, that's a tough pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Just missed for ball three. Three balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

That's a good pitch. That's a tough one to take.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, that's some good discipline there on the part of Ashcraft because that was a tough one to watch go by. Here's the pitch. In there for a strike. Three balls, one strike. Two outs. Runner on third. East leads two to one. We're in the top of the second inning.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I'm not so sure Peyton didn't say something to the um because that was in the exact same spot as pitch before.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by Nathan. Lined out over shortstop's head. In the gap. That's going to score another run. Ashcraft stops at second base with a double. Extra base hits have been the Achilles heel for the Crusaders here in the second inning. They trailed three to one.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, nice piece of inside out hidden by Ashcraft. You know, he took that ball to outside corner and he and he went with it. Took it right in between left and center.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Jeps into the plate. He tripled his first time up and scored a run.

SPEAKER_16

Western Kentucky recruit. We saw the power that he has.

SPEAKER_09

Just missed for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Oh, I don't know where it missed, but must have been down or a little inside. That was a nice pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan with a long look in. And the delivery. Swing and a miss. Strike one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Nathan, uh, he doesn't want to give him anything too good to hit here. You know, you want to keep it keep it uh down. Maybe down and in on Jepson. You don't want to give him anything in the wheelhouse. We saw what he can do with it.

SPEAKER_09

There's a pitch. Inside, good stop by Peyton to keep that in front of him. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, we got. I mean, first base is open here, Mike. It's this is that's not this wouldn't be a bad thing.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch hits sharply out to right field over Moravic's head. Another run will score. Jepson has got a double and a triple to start this game off, and it is now four to one Black Raiders.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Gasman just got to settle down here. Let's get out of the inning. I mean, he swings a sweet bat. There's no question about that. And uh just got a little bit up in the zone and and he turned on it. Good job, Peyton, going out and talking to Gaswin, just saying, here let's just let's get out of this any and let's get back get our bats back in into the game here.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's still early. Top of the second crusaders trail four to one.

SPEAKER_16

And just gets a humongous lead. He's gonna he's gonna he's gonna have to keep him on there. I mean he was halfway.

SPEAKER_09

No balls, one strike to Cherkis. Look back to second by Nathan. That pitch in there for strike two. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Not a bad pitch. Cat got it up there by his shoulders, and Cherkis got Cherkis to to go for it. I mean, so now you're heading the count here. I mean, get try to get him to chase something here, down and low.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Jepson goes. No throw down. Jepson with the stolen base. He's at third base with two outs. Three runs already across for the East High Black Raiders in this inning. They lead four to one.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Peyton would have had a chance at him. He was three quarters of the way there before the ball was even released.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan comes set and delivers to the plate. That pitch fouled out of play down the third baseline. Count remains one ball, two strikes. I'd like to thank the Bargain Center and Barkley Asphalt for being an underwriter of Catholic Radio, as well as BCU's Catholic Connection Scholarship and Bob Rowe's point after and north end zone. Nathan comes set and deals to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Here we go.

SPEAKER_09

That hit out to Dylan. He's making a long run. Tries to make a diving catch, is unable to haul it in. So that will keep the inning alive. Cherkis gets the RBI. Jepson scores to make it five to one. And that will bring Callan Cook to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

You know, as a routine fly ball normally, uh Mike, but they got our outfielders a little gun shy with the uh that two or three of them go over their heads. So we're we backed up a little bit, and uh he just drops that one in there. Good effort by Dylan. Great effort.

SPEAKER_09

Look over. Here's a pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Find it.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch popped up.

SPEAKER_16

Good job by getting the mask off and getting over there.

SPEAKER_09

No balls one strike to count to cook.

SPEAKER_16

Nice pitch by Nathan. You know, I think he's really gonna work that inside corner on these left-handed batters. They got several of them.

SPEAKER_09

Throw over to first. That ball gets away from Shaner.

SPEAKER_16

He's going to third.

SPEAKER_09

Trying to take third. And he's in there safely, according to the gentleman that's umpiring along third base. So East with another runner in scoring position. One ball, two strikes the count. I'm sorry, no balls, one strike, two outs. East has pushed four runs across this inning, and they lead five to one in the top of the second inning.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, just concentrated.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch hitting the gap between right and center. It's all the way to the fence. Cherkis will score from third, and Cook is on his way to third with a triple. He's really hitting the ball hard this inning.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's a one bouncer to the left center, right? You know, hit hits the hits the dirt. And uh I mean those are good pitches. He's not throwing bad pitches. These guys are just hitting really good pitches right now.

SPEAKER_09

Coach Wesselman heads out to have a conversation with Gaswent. East has scored five runs this inning, and they lead currently six to one, and we are in the top of the second.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's he's gotta he's gotta get out of this inning. And and uh I mean let our bats get going, just start picking away at it one run at a time.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he hasn't pitched bad. They just making good contact with these pitches, and they're they're putting in the gaps. Every every hit has been a hard hit.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Bodie Colling to the plate. He will be the ninth batter in the inning for the Black Raiders. Wind up in the pitch. Popped up out of play. Hopefully it misses everybody's cars. It's parked along the street out there. There are a lot of them up and down the street, of course, as you would expect with a matchup of this caliber. Nathan from the wind up here in the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

That's foul ball.

SPEAKER_09

Fouled off at the plate.

SPEAKER_16

You know, let's go back a little bit here, Mike, and and remember, I mean, this thing all starts. We had one out. This thing starts with a basically a oops hit that, you know, really we could have caught making it two outs and possibly avoiding this in this inning.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Swinging a miss.

SPEAKER_16

There we go. Got out of there. Let's get our bats going.

SPEAKER_09

Colling strikes out to end the inning. East pushes across five runs in that inning. We're heading to the bottom of the second. East leads six to one. We will be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We are back and we're heading to the bottom of the second inning. Crusaders trail this one six to one. They will send Gaswent, Moravik, and Chase Beck to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's important. I mean, we just need to get one run at a time here. Start chipping away. Um and then come back and and and just regroup.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch to Nathan. Hit sharply, foul down the first baseline. No balls, one strike. He's really improved his batting average here the last few weeks.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, just talking to you about that, Mike. I mean, I I just had it in front of me here. Just I think he's up to yeah, he's up to 256. You know, and and and that's after going over, I think, to start the season, basically. So, I mean, that kind of just tells you he's kind of gotten himself in a zone.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Outside, one ball, two strikes. And the pitch to Nathan.

SPEAKER_16

Nice, nice cut.

SPEAKER_09

That's gonna get a front yard or a house over there along the side street.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, we just we need base runners here. Just, you know, like I said, Mike, just one run at a time. We got six, six at bats. There we go.

SPEAKER_09

Good or bad here, making colling work pretty hard.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Count stays. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, their outfielders are really playing him to hit it right.

SPEAKER_09

I mean, the gap is swinging a miss for strike three. First strikeout for colling tonight. That's the first out of the inning. That will bring Moravic to the plate. I'd like to thank Bush Dry Cleaners, Catholic Charities, and Central Bank, Sioux City, Storm Lake for their support of Catholic Radio and Bishop Healing Athletics. First pitch here to Moravic. Outside, ball one, one ball, no strikes. Here's the pitch. Nice. Nicely hit between first and second. Good job by Mason there. That that's going to give him a batting average of a thousand for the season. John, that's his first official at bat.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that was nice at bat. I mean, took that curveball and kind of stayed back and drove it, drove it in between second and first.

SPEAKER_09

So for now, he can probably say he's got the highest batting average on the team by a substantial amount.

SPEAKER_16

He definitely does.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Chase Beck to the plate. One out here in the bottom of the second. Crusaders trail six to one, trying to get a little something going here and get a run or two back. That's all we need. First pitch. Squares to bunt. Unable to make contact. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Well, I'm not surprised at that. Chase got some he's got some good wheels, and third baseman was playing a little back.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch. That pitch inside. One ball, one strike. Dylan Knapp. Yeah. Do up next.

SPEAKER_16

I'd love to see us manufacture a run here with the bottom of the order. There we go. Nice cut.

SPEAKER_09

And actually, just got a text that Moravic can proudly say he leads the state in batting average.

SPEAKER_16

1,000.

SPEAKER_09

Hopefully they'll go back and listen to this and they'll hear her say that. Beck's biggest. Ball bounced out to short. Moravic out at second for the second out of the inning. And Beck able to reach on the fielder's choice. That will bring Dylan Knapp to the plate with two outs.

SPEAKER_16

Good hustle by Chase getting down the line. Of course, I'm used to seeing Chase over at second base, so seeing him at third, this is kind of interesting for me because as I've talked to you about, you know, how smooth he is at second base, and I haven't we haven't gotten to see him make any plays over at third yet. I'm kind of anxious to see that.

SPEAKER_09

Umpire had to head over to the east dugout, and something must have been said that he didn't appreciate, so he went over and made it clear that he's the one in charge, and Dylan Knapp will step in.

SPEAKER_16

Now let's let's continue to be hot here, Dylan. He's gonna give you something to hit.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch to Dylan inside for ball one.

SPEAKER_16

It's manufacture with two outs.

SPEAKER_09

One ball, no strikes. Beck at first, two outs.

SPEAKER_16

We're giving him that gap between left and center.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. And hit that over to the second baseman who throws him out at first for the third out. That will retire the Crusaders in the bottom of the second. They score no runs. We go to the top of the third. Crusaders trail six to one. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_09

Cal Chamberlain steps in from the left side. He started the last inning off with a soft tap back to gas went, thrown out at first base. First pitch in there for strike one. And then after that, that's when the wheels fell off.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he got that first out, and then like we were talking that you know they had that weird play that all three of our guys surrounded. Uh that would have got us two outs, nobody on. But uh, like you said, and just the wheels just fell off after that.

SPEAKER_09

One ball, one strike to Chamberlain McCaffrey do up next. Pitch outside for ball two, two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I'd like to see him come down and in on these guys a little more. Uh get the pitch.

SPEAKER_09

That's nice. Inside corner strike two, two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Beautiful pitch by Nathan, and that's where I think I mean they got so many left-handed batters, Mike. I mean, he's really got to start owning that inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan Deals. Ball hit out to JJ Hope at short. Ranges to his left, makes a throw. Nice job by JJ for that first out. That will bring McCaffrey to the plate. He got everything started that last inning with a double.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's just getting better and better down there at short. JJ has range. You know, we talk about Jepson from East and just as good a range as is JJ Hope going left right.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch. In there for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

It's a good curveball. You know, yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch outside for ball one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Nathan's just got to shut out all the distractions here and it's just things. Zero-zero ball game, and I need to keep us within distance, or we can chip away.

SPEAKER_09

Nice pitch on the outside corner for strike two. One ball, two strikes. Crusaders trail six to one. We're in the top of the third. Here's the pitch. Hit back up. JJ Hope. Nice play. Fields that behind second base. Throws to first for the second out. There's that range we've been talking about with JJ.

SPEAKER_16

Gorgeous. Gorgeous play. I mean, he had to cover a lot of ground. Catches that ball right over second base and up and throwing at the same time. I mean, just a gorgeous play.

SPEAKER_09

Brings Frankie Steuze to the plate. He tripled his first time up and scored a run. Pitch outside for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Nice framing on the outside corner. Tried to do a backdoor curve ball. Come around and catch that black. Just missed.

SPEAKER_09

Delivery to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Nice play. Nice play by Brody down there at first. Able to scoop that up. Excuse me. Yeah, Brody.

SPEAKER_09

First base on ascended, unassisted. That'll end the inning. Head to the bottom of the third, Crusaders Trail 6-1. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We are starting the bottom of the third here. Crusaders trail 6-1. They'll have JJ Hope, Peyton Erickson, and Caleb of Favor stepping into the batter's box this inning.

SPEAKER_16

That pitch a little bit outside, but yeah, he gave it to him on that outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

No balls, one strike. That pitch outside. Ball one. One ball, one strike. Peyton singled his first time up and scored the only crusader run. Here's the pitch. In there for strike two. One ball, two strikes. Bodie with the long look in and the pitch. Outside, ball two. Two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, East is playing every one of our guys to take at the opposite field.

SPEAKER_09

Hit down the first baseline. Foul. The first baseman lost, or the right fielder lost it in the sun, so it harmlessly falls to the ground.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, they got the shift down. Let's go back to that last inning on JJ. That was a nice ball hit by him. Actually, normally it would have been a base hit, but where the second baseman's playing in the I mean everybody's shifted over to the right.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch to JJ. Fouls that one back out of play.

SPEAKER_16

Or excuse me, I was Dylan that I was talking about, not JJ. It was Dylan that last inning. I mean, that was actually a nice piece of hitting by Dylan, but they just had him played perfect. That's trouble. That's trouble.

SPEAKER_09

Bought that pitch off out to second base. Just out at first, second to first for the first out. That will bring Peyton Erickson to the plate. Singled his last time up was out at second base on the fielder's choice.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he he had a nice hit uh right where the shortstop is now, hitting that on a hit and run, just hard hit ball.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch ball one, one ball, no strikes. Yeah, they're second and short are playing out on the grass.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, they're playing him. It kind of moved over. They took the shift off of him after since the last time he pulled it.

SPEAKER_09

Peyton asks for timeout, steps out of the box. Steps back in. And here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Nice piece of head there.

SPEAKER_09

Foul back. One ball, one strike. One out. We're in the bottom of the third Crusaders trail, the Black Raiders, six to one. Pitch. Just low for ball two. Two balls, one strike. Some batters calling works fast, and others he works, he slows himself down. Swing and a miss for strike two. Two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

He really likes that curveball on the outside corner. Throws it about 60 to 70 percent of the time.

SPEAKER_09

And the pitch. Nice. Off the pitcher's mound, right to the shortstop. Throw over to first for out number two. That will bring Caleb LeFaver to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, nice, nice hitting right up the middle, but just better defensive play by Jeppson. He covered a lot of ground there and uh made that look easy.

unknown

Caleb LeFaver.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch to Caleb. Swings at that first pitch, fouls it off out of play. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he that was the pitch he wanted. He really really tried to turn on that thing. And he sees that gap, Mike. Look at that gap between left and center. He sees that, and and that's what he's trying to do.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch outside, one ball, one strike. Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

That's just a nice piece of hitting.

SPEAKER_09

Hit back up the middle for a single. LaFaver reaches with base hit, and that will bring Schainer to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yep. And Jepson was playing just a little more over toward third base on that. They're playing him to take it that direction to left field. And uh Lefaver's just such a good hitter. He takes that thing right up the middle. Just beautiful piece of hitting.

SPEAKER_09

Brody grounded out second to first is first time up. Here's the pitch. Fouled off. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Like to see him get a hold of one. Look at he's definitely he added to his uh home run total.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he's got the only two home runs for Bishop Healing this year, so it'd be nice to see him turn on one here.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, just get the ball up in the air today, and that thing's gonna go. I mean, it's going straight out left field.

SPEAKER_09

Throw over to first. Caleb back in plenty of time. Here's a pitch. Caleb goes. Ball fouled off at the plate. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, let's let's do this with two outs. Got a good hitter. I I I don't mind that being aggressive. Chip away one one at a time. He's gotta protect that outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Colin comes set. Nice hits that. There we go. Really nice base hit between short and third.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

LaFaver stops at second. Crusaders have two on here in the bottom of the third. They trail six to one with two outs, and that brings Tom Carroll to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Tommy's been making good contact, and it'd be nice here to see if see if he can find an open spot. And they're gonna play him to go to right field. So I mean they're gonna leave that gap between left and center. And we've seen Tommy turn on them on it, so very capable of putting that thing in the gap.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch to Carroll outside ball one. One ball, no strikes. Nathan Gas went due up next.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I mean, look at that center fielders playing all the way over there and on the right side of the of the monster out there.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Right there, that's perfect.

SPEAKER_09

Hit hard back up the middle, just out of reach of the shortstop. LaFaver will score from second.

SPEAKER_16

Good piece of it's exactly what they left that gap open for him, Mike, and and what a great piece of hitting by Carroll. He put it right in between left and center. Nice line drive hit.

SPEAKER_09

Carroll with the RBI makes a score six to two here in the bottom of the third Crusaders trail. Still have two men on with two outs, and Nathan Gaswin steps in. Has a chance to help his cause here.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, don't try to overswing Nathan. Just a nice easy single somewhere in between. Third and short, leaving you a gap there.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch. That pitch high to Nathan for ball one. One ball, no strikes. Moravic do up next.

SPEAKER_16

Like I said, we'll just chip away, Mike, one at a time here.

SPEAKER_09

Young Mr. Moravik with the highest batting average in the state of Iowa.

SPEAKER_16

Like to see him do that again here after Nathan gets a hit.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Bounces in there for ball two. Two balls, no strikes. One run in. Crusaders trail six to two.

SPEAKER_16

Collins not going to overpower you. He likes that curveball.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Yeah. On the outside corner for strike one. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

That's a good look. That's a good look. That could have gone either way.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan struck out swinging his first time up.

SPEAKER_16

Much more patient.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Again there.

SPEAKER_09

Fouls that out of play. Oh, that did get a car. Took a wicked bounce into a front yard. Two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, again, they're giving him that gap between left and center.

SPEAKER_09

Colling with the long look in and the delivery.

SPEAKER_16

Here we go.

SPEAKER_09

Gets away from the catcher. Everybody will advance a base.

SPEAKER_16

Here we go.

SPEAKER_09

Crusaders now have runners at second and third with two outs. Full count to Nathan Gaswent.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, let's do this with two outs. Got guys in scoring position. You know, single here in the gap will score too. I mean, they're playing him that far over to right field. Dad sees that too. I think he's encouraging him to look at that.

SPEAKER_09

Colling will pitch from the full wind up here with runners at second and third. And the pitch. Caught looking for strike three. That will retire the side for the Crusaders. They're able to push one run account across. We head to the top of the fourth. Sioux City East 6, Bishop Healing 2. We will be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_14

You're listening to FM 88.1, KFHC, Ponka Sioux City, and KOIA, Storm Lake, Siouxland Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Just unable to push more runs across. They were able to get one. We're heading here to the top of the fourth Crusaders trail six to two. Yes. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_16

No, you go ahead.

SPEAKER_09

East High will send Leander, Ashcraft, and Jepson to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

To hit those gaps where they're where they're playing, you know, they're playing us to take the ball to the opposite field, and we had a couple really nice hits there to get that run. And that's all we really need. We need one at a time. And we need Nathan to kind of just keep in check here.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, gas went back there, back out on the mound to start this inning.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that's real important. These next two hitters are huge. Keep these guys off the base for uh for Jepson.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the first pitch. Popped up down the third baseline. Could be trouble. Tommy Carroll makes a twisting catch. I guess that's the best way to describe that, John.

SPEAKER_16

That was I don't know if he lost that for a second with the sun, but but he uh he recovered and made a really nice catch right there down on the line.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, made it uh made a little interesting for the Crusader Faithful and you and I up here in the box. Uh one out, that'll bring Quentin Ashcraft to the plate. He doubled his last time up and scored a run. First pitch outside for ball one, one ball, no strikes. Jepson would be up next, and he has got a triple and a double to his credit.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, we need to keep him off the base here.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, good pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Foul back, one ball, one strike. So Jepson halfway to the cycle here. That pitch outside for ball two. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

I don't mind that spot. I mean, that's he's he's kind of sitting in between the batter's box. That would be a tough for him to reach that outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch by Nathan.

SPEAKER_16

Fouled off. Two balls, two strikes. And and right as I say that, he goes right back at that outside corner. So yeah, I think Peyton definitely sees that as well. Come jam him down, jam him.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Oh he tried to get it, get him inside.

SPEAKER_16

Ball that did not miss by much. Right on the inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Full count on Ashcraft. And here's the payoff pitch. Fouled off. Three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

That about took off about four heads right there, and third base dugout. Jeez.

SPEAKER_09

That's why I hate all those kids standing along the fence there. None of them are wearing helmets. Not that I think.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that that about took one of them off. Matter of fact, I think the umpire took a little time off. I don't know if it maybe it hit one of them. I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_09

He's giving them all a chance to collect themselves down there. That the along the fen along the dugout fence was empty for a few seconds there, folks, and it's normally not empty. It's it's full of crusaders, and same way on the uh in the east high dugout. Here's a payoff pitch. Hit sharply out to second base. Nice play there.

SPEAKER_16

Nice young eighth grader. Did a nice job going to his backhand there.

SPEAKER_09

Out number two. That'll bring Jepson to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's a lot nicer facing Jepson with nobody in scoring position, Mike. The way he's been swinging the bat here.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he's swinging it really well tonight and came in with batting average of 490. And with being two for two, I'm sure that's gonna be way over 500 by the time we're done here. First pitch way outside for ball one. One ball, no strikes. Logan Cherkis would be next. Wind up in the pitch. Another one outside. Ball two. Two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's not giving him anything in his wheelhouse.

SPEAKER_09

Uh I don't blame him.

SPEAKER_16

I don't, yeah. No, he's those two are far outside, but here's a pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Just off the outside corner for ball three. Three balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

I didn't miss by much. I mean it had to have been low because I think that caught the corner.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan Deals. Outside corner strike one. Three balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, let's see Peyton. I think I go back back at that outside corner, and that's where he's going. Ooh, inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Come on back, Cal. That was strike two. Three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Cal didn't like that.

SPEAKER_09

Dropped his bat, started taking all his gear off.

SPEAKER_16

That was a definite strike. He Peyton lined up on the outside corner, and and uh Nathan caught the inside corner, so I don't know if Cal was looking at Peyton.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. That hit him.

SPEAKER_16

He didn't like that.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he throws the bat down on home plate. Not surprising. Hit by pitch there. Puts a runner on first base with two outs. That'll bring Cherkis to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

One thing with Nathan, and Nathan's not afraid to come back in. He was just trying to get that inside corner. That's his. And uh, you know, and Cal didn't like it. Um that's just good baseball. Nathan's not gonna back down from anybody. And and that pitch, he was going after that inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Well, I'll politely say the confidence of the baseball players on this East High team is very strong.

SPEAKER_16

Yes. Yes.

SPEAKER_09

Throw over Jepson just gets back.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, there's no question he's gonna be going. And Nathan's got to keep him close.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan checks him over at first.

SPEAKER_16

Huge lead.

SPEAKER_09

Deals to the plate, does not go. Cherkis. Another hit by pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, umpire's gonna go out and and and he's walking out throwing the ball to him, and and uh that was a uh not so sure if he didn't warn him there, but I just think he's going after the inside corner, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, they they're crowding the plate, and he's like you said, he's trying to own the inside corner, and uh this is this has been an issue for Healing pitching this year.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. Yep. Well, you're seeing more and more of this at the college level, at the high school level. These kids, they come, they got all the gear on and everything, and they and they try to crowd the plate. This is a big out here. Yeah, he's got to go after him.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Cook to the plate. Nice first pitch in there for a strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, nice curved ball. Swung that thing on the inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Gaswin checks runner at second. Ball fouled off. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

That's a good pitch. Try to back Dormeyer on the on the on the black on the outside corner, made him reach for it. I don't I like that pitch. Could have tripled his last time up. Yeah. Yeah, he put it in that gap. Yeah, he's gonna get over there.

SPEAKER_09

Jepson scores from second. He was stealing third and never stopped running. No, great effort there by Heaton at second base to get over and cut that off and try to make a play at first. So Cook with the RBI single. That will bring Bodie Cowling to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Heaton had to cover a lot of distance. You know, it's that's one of those plays, you know. I mean, you gotta just get rid of the ball as fast as you can, and and uh you had some good wheels going down first base. Good running by Jepson. Gotta minimize the damage here. Oh. Get him, get him.

SPEAKER_09

Cook took off from first base. He's down at second, so now there's runners at second and third with two outs. One run already in this inning. East leads seven to two, and Bodie Colling at the plate.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, we we gotta be more decisive. You know, you can't you can't hold the ball there. You gotta you gotta fire that thing. We had him dead to dead to rights there on third base.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch in there, first strike. No balls, one strike. We're in the top of the fourth Crusaders trail, seven to two.

SPEAKER_16

Nice.

SPEAKER_09

Ball hit down to third, thrown over to first, gets away from Shaner, and Colling is safe at first. He is down. Yeah, he and Shaner collided.

SPEAKER_16

That was a huge collision. Good play by Beck uh making that and in ball on the inside of first base, and they just they just collided.

SPEAKER_09

Another run did score. The score is now eight to two. Sioux City East.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, they're looking at both players here. I think they're both okay.

SPEAKER_09

Everything going on out there. Scores now eight to two east in the top of the fourth. Chamberlain steps in, he grounded first to pitcher to first and short to first is both times up. Here's the pitch by Nathan. Bounces that one in there for a ball. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Nathan, just gotta keep your composure out here. I mean, he's those were good pitches, balls hit right right at the second baseman and third baseman, just tough plays on by both of them.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Pitch inside for ball two, two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, this is a huge out.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, two hit batsmen in this inning have been uh the issue, led to two runs.

SPEAKER_16

On infield singles, Mike. I mean those both were infield singles.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. And that hits him. That's the third hit batsman of the inning.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's gonna go out, throw that ball out there and make East has runners at first and second two outs.

SPEAKER_09

They've pushed three runs across. They currently lead eight to two, and that will bring McCaff Mc McCaff.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, let's go after this guy here. Just get out of the inning.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the first pitch. Yeah, nice breaks that one in there for strike one. No balls one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, nice pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Okay, and he comes set. Delivers.

SPEAKER_16

Good pitch. Good good pitch by Nathan.

SPEAKER_09

Taps foul down the first baseline. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

McCaffrey, he might be is either only only left left or right-handed batter. I I I'm pretty sure. I think he might be, yeah, I think you're right. I think every one of them go hits from the left side.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the wind-up in the pitch. That's high for ball one. One ball, two strikes. Yeah, it's easy to see why the Black Raiders are number one team in the state.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, they hit the ball. I mean, everything's hard contact.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan comes set, checks the runner at second, deals. Ball hit out to the gap. And that's gonna get to the fence. Two more runs are gonna score. McCaffrey's on his way to third. And he's in with the triple.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. This put it perfectly in between left and center. Out to the warning track. Um just just a just a tough play by either one of those outfielders. And then there's a little communication, and I think uh Carol's going over to say something to Dylan right now. They had a little communication on who was going to field the ball up there and about ran into each other.

SPEAKER_09

And we'll have a pitching change. We will be back in one minute with uh information on the new pitcher.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

The new pitcher for Healen will be Mason Moravik. Nathan Gaskin will go out into right field. Mason.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, this will be his biggest challenge right here, Mike. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_09

Well at least he's got a left-handed pitcher, so we got some of that that lefty on lefty.

SPEAKER_16

Oh man. I mean, yeah, they're they're a good hitting team, and and uh but Mason, we've talked about Mason, you know, a ton, how how well he's done. He comes in situation and he's not phased. I mean, we saw it at MOC. We you know, we we saw it against North. Um, I think we saw it against uh we saw it against West. Uh he's not afraid to come in and and and shut the door.

SPEAKER_09

No, he done an admirable job every time he's been in there, and like you said, this is gonna be a tough test for him.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah. That's all right. This is how you get better. I mean, you come in in situations that got two outs, you know, 11 to 2 here. I mean, you want to keep it from the 10-run rule here, obviously, and and uh and see what he can do. I mean, he's gonna face some good batters. He's I think he's back down where we had in the order. We're at Steuze. That's Steu.

SPEAKER_09

Tripled his first time up and grounded out unassisted the first baseman.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, we're back down to the bottom of the order and and uh important to get out of here, uh, get Steuze out and and uh get out of this inning and and just get our bats going. And and start motivating, getting ourselves up and clawing some runs in here and then and and working, working, you never know what's gonna happen, especially high school baseball.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, just got to start finding some positives to end this game and build on. Here's first pitch outside ball one, one ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Well, that has a serious break to it. I think that um I mean I think he kind of gave up on it, but that thing almost came in as a strike. That thing really dipped.

SPEAKER_09

Steu is the ninth hitter of the inning for the Crusade or for the Black Raiders. And it's safe to say that Healing won't face a another team that can hit like East can.

SPEAKER_16

Uh no, not that I've seen so far. I mean, they're solid one through nine. I mean, you really got to be sharp on the on the corners and keep the ball. Uh you gotta keep it low.

SPEAKER_09

Swing and a miss by Steuze there. Two balls, one strike. McCaffrey at third. It's 11 to 2. We're in the top of the fourth inning. Crusaders trail. Wind up in the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

A little high.

SPEAKER_09

Just high for ball three. Three balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I think that was that breaking ball. It just didn't break, just stayed up there.

SPEAKER_09

Here's delivery of the plate. Fouled off. That'll bring the count. Full. Three balls, two strikes. McCaffrey at third, two outs. Black Raiders have pushed five runs across this inning, and they lead the Crusaders 11-2. Here's the pitch by Mason. Outside ball four. Walks him. Runners at first and third. Two outs. That'll bring Leander up. He started this inning off with that pop-up down the third baseline that Tommy Carroll made a running, twisting catch on.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he stopped. I I have to laugh a little bit. I think this is how he started. Almost every time he comes in, he he walks that first battery so and then he kind of finds his zone.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch just high for ball one.

SPEAKER_16

It wasn't it wasn't overly high. That didn't miss by much.

SPEAKER_09

Well, at least for now he's got the moniker and the title of the highest batting average in the state. Here's the pitch. Just outside for ball two. Two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Peyton's saying, come on, kid, here now. Just find your zone.

SPEAKER_09

I think our air conditioner went out up here. John, it started to get a little warm. Maybe it's the game. Swing and a miss. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, yeah. If it was working, it's not working now. It'd be nice to sit up in that shade on uh left field line. I'm telling you. Lots of parents.

SPEAKER_09

Trying to do a game from out there. I did I did look out there last Friday when I was here for the JV game, and they've got power out there. Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss, strike two, two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

There you go. Back to back. Let's get out of this inning here.

SPEAKER_09

Moravic with the long look in. Checks runner at first, and he deals to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Oh, boy, did that not be.

SPEAKER_09

Must have been fouled off. I thought it might have hit him, but it must have been fouled off.

SPEAKER_16

Well, I think I think he tried to get out of the way and then uh and then it hit the bat and hit the catcher. Good job by the umpire. He's going out, you know, talking to the pitcher, but what he's really doing is he's giving Peyton some time to recoup. Yeah, Peyton must have took one either either in the in the gut or the thigh, somewhere in there. And he's walked off. He's he's a tough kid. We know that.

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two on. Here's the pitch by Mason. Swing and a miss for strike three.

SPEAKER_16

Job. Good job coming in and closing the door.

SPEAKER_09

Mason comes in and gets that third out. East High pushes five runs across there in the top of the fourth. We'll go to the bottom of the fourth Crusaders Trail, 11-2. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_16

Thank you so much for supporting Bishop Healing Baseball.

SPEAKER_09

Wind up in the pitch. First pitch in there, first strike. No balls, one strike. Colling working fast now. Nice. Hit back up the middle. Still batting a thousand. Mason Moravic. Gets the inning started with a single. That'll bring Chase Beck up.

SPEAKER_16

Boy kept that head nice and tight. And he just let that pitch come into him, and he took that thing right up the middle, like you're taught. Drove it, hands first, barrel coming through.

SPEAKER_09

Tough stretch there for Colling. He had the collision at first base last inning and then just almost took one off his leg there. Here's the pitch. Bounces in there for a ball. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I mean, you know, Collins a good pitcher. He he throws a lot of curve balls, but he he's definitely not going to overpower you. He tries to hit the corners and he gives you pitches to hit. And I mean we're hitting the ball. You know, we're not striking out a lot. We're hitting the ball. We've we you know Jepson's made a couple really nice plays. Um but we've strung together. I I mean the hit difference, uh what is it? Eight. I think we have seven hits. I think they only have eight.

SPEAKER_09

So here's the pitch. Runner goes.

SPEAKER_16

Boy.

SPEAKER_09

Got a runner down at second base with no outs. That bounce that bounced in there for ball two.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, good running. I mean, he's just he's just fast.

SPEAKER_09

I think that might be Jonas. It's number three. We don't have him on a roster here. That ball tapped foul. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Um, I can't see number three. Number three. Yeah, I don't. I do not have number three on on my roster as well.

SPEAKER_09

Calling with a long look in. Here's a pitch. Good card. Foul back. I think it is Jonas. Looks like he's got a protective shield over his front of his helmet there. Good to see him out on the base pass.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's got some pretty good wheels. I mean.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss. Strike three. Beck strikes out. First out of the inning. That'll bring Dylan Knapp to the plate. Grounded out second to first is for first and only time up.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, good pitch on the outside corner and a curved ball. Um yeah, Dylan had nice. Yeah, they're playing that shift. They're moving that second baseman right way over for him. Short step, covering, covering second.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch to Dylan. Outside corner for strike one. No balls one strike. Healing scored one in the first and one in the third. They trail 11-2 here in the bottom of the fourth. Here's the pitch. Outside corner again for strike two. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Might have gotten a little bit out. I don't mind him looking at that pitch, but now you gotta protect anything close, anything in that vicinity.

SPEAKER_09

JJ Hope do up after Dillon. Here's the pitch. Outside ball one. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

You know, nothing's impossible here. We saw what TJ did to East. They were down nine runs.

SPEAKER_09

Seven. Six runs. Down six. TJ scored seven in the bucket with their last at bat, but I don't see East pulling all their starters for this game. They probably learned their lesson. Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

There we go.

SPEAKER_09

Nice, nice hit out to center field by Dillon. That'll score.

SPEAKER_16

That's a play at home. Nice play. Good running. He's just really stroking the ball good, Mike. I mean, even his first at bat was a hard hit normally in the gap. And uh and he took that thing beautifully right in between right and center.

SPEAKER_09

That will bring up JJ Hope. He singled and grounded out second to first his two times.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, we got an 11-3 ball game up here, and we're looking at the hits, and we're even at eight hits apiece. So, I mean, they've just hit it when they've had guys in scoring position.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch.

SPEAKER_16

That's trouble.

SPEAKER_09

Is bounced foul for strike one. No balls, one strike. Peyton Erickson will follow JJ Hope.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, like we were talking about earlier. I mean, we gotta find the positives here, and then let's just start stringing together some hits, manufacturing some runs. I mean, something to work on. Uh and you never know. You never know what could happen, but you know, you definitely want to work on it going into that next game.

SPEAKER_09

Throw it to first, Dylan back in plenty of time.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he really wants to work that outside corner of this pitcher.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the delivery of the plates. JJ, that's off the third baseman's glove. JJ's gonna beat that out. Dylan on his way to third.

SPEAKER_16

Good piece of running. Heads up, heads up play by Dillon. Dylan Knapp. As soon as he let go of that ball, it shortstop. He was heading to third.

SPEAKER_09

Got runners at the corner with one out. That will bring Peyton Erickson to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, and that's no question. That's a base hit. There's that's just that there's no way that third baseman's gonna make that play.

SPEAKER_09

And he did the old ghost tag. He didn't even have the ball. Coach Wesselman asking the home plate umpire if that's kosher. Erickson steps in. Singled his first time up, grounded out short to first last time.

SPEAKER_16

Nice pitch to hit. He just missed it. Boy, you turned on that thing and just missed it. Got it on the handle. Hit it over to third base.

SPEAKER_09

Fouled that down the third baseline. No balls, one strike. Gotta wonder if JJ's gonna be going here at some point. Try to get two guys in scoring position.

SPEAKER_16

Well, and if you're East, you don't you're you're not worried about the run. I mean, you're gonna go after JJ. There's no question. You're gonna give up this run on a double steal. I mean, no, yeah, because your infielders would be playing in just a little bit if they were gonna go home.

SPEAKER_09

JJ dives back in on that throwover. No balls, one strike to Erickson. Runners at first and third. That pounces in there for a ball, one ball, one strike. Crusaders have pushed one across this inning. They trail 11 to 3 in the bottom of the fourth.

SPEAKER_16

Definitely fun for me to watch these two catchers. They're both just excellent, excellent defense of catchers, fundamentally sound. If you're a catcher like I was, this is just a it's just fun to watch.

SPEAKER_09

Step toward third, throw over to first, everybody's back in time. Here's a pitch to Peyton. Swing and a miss, strike two. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Peyton, keep your weight back, Ed. He's throwing that curveball in the outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

And the pitch. Outside. Two balls, two strikes. Here's the pitch. JJ goes. Ball gets away. Here comes Dylan. He's gonna score.

SPEAKER_16

But JJ was all halfway to third. Thought he was gonna go.

SPEAKER_09

He was tempted. So that brings account full to Peyton Erickson. Caleb Lafaver due up next. JJ Hope out second base in scoring position.

SPEAKER_16

Now, if you watched what that play, and then and Erickson does a great job of this, and so does uh Cherkis for them. That ball gets by the catcher on a wild pitch, and and that helmet comes right off. Great, great job of uh getting rid of your equipment.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch on the outside corner for called strike three. Out number two, that will bring Le Favre to the plate. JJ Hope out at second base. Crusaders have pushed two runs across in this inning. They trailed 11-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Yeah, it's time for and they're gonna just intentionally walk Caleb.

SPEAKER_16

That's a smart move on their part. I I don't, you know, I mean, the way he's been hitting, you know, you you put him on first base, and now you've got to force out of first and second.

SPEAKER_09

Bring Shaner to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's he stroke the ball a nice hit last time. I'd like to see him get it up in the air here. I mean, he can make this a four-run game real quick.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, colling takes a little too long, Brody steps out. Now we're back ready to play. Colling comes set, checks runner at second, delivers. Outside, ball one, one ball, no strikes. Colling really taking his time here. Checks back at second, delivers. That ball hit out to the shortstop, throws over to first for the third out. That will retire the side. Crusaders are able to push two runs across. We head to the top of the fifth. Sioux City East 11. Bishop Healen 4. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your

SPEAKER_09

That brings us to the top of the fifth inning here. East Hide leads Bishop Healan 11 to 4. East will send Ashcraft Jepsen and Turkis to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Let's talk about a few more of our underwriters here, Mike. Uh sponsors of uh Bishop Healin Baseball, Heidman Law Firm, Heinmann Family Dentistry, I'm on Communications, JJ Coins and Collectibles, Jimmy Johns, Keller Williams Real Estate Agent Tammy Bertram, and Cruz Financial Group. Thank you for sponsoring Bishop Healin Baseball and Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_09

Ashcraft steps in to lead off the top of the fifth inning for the East Tide Black Raiders. He doubled his first time up and grounded out second to first. That first pitch in there by Moravik for a strike. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it's one thing that Moravik has is confidence, isn't it?

SPEAKER_09

Yes, it is.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch fouled off for strike two. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

You know, he's not going to overpower you. He he he he nips. He nips at the corners. You know, tries to get you chasing things. I mean, he just does a really good job of of using the talents that he has.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch it out to JJ Hope at short. Over to Shaner at first for the first out. One down. That'll bring the top of the order up. Cal Jepson steps in. He two for two and a hit by pitch is last time up.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, now uh now Moravic's got the top of the order, and and uh I mean they're we know what these first three guys can do. Actually, the first first four have just stung us. So let's see what he can do.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch by Mason in there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Jepson has scored three of the 11 East High runs tonight.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, just a great athlete. You know, he's obviously their quarterback on that football team.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Boy.

SPEAKER_09

Just high for ball one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Well, that didn't miss by much. I mean, that's to my opinion, that's just a good high school strike right there. Just a little bit above the belt.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by Mason. Oh, just inside for ball two. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, it looks like the pitch that the he he wrung Peyton up last inning. I'm sure Peyton's giving him a little bit of you know, you called that on me.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Pitch low for ball two. Two balls, one strike. Cherkis. Do up, followed by Cook. Here's the pitch. Nope, that was air mills that one.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, I payton every single gets the ball. He knows the kind of speed that Jepson's got.

SPEAKER_09

One out, Jepson on first. Cherkis steps in.

SPEAKER_16

Just a curveball that didn't curve and just got away from him and ended up at a backstop.

SPEAKER_09

If you just joined us, we're in the top of the fifth inning. Crusaders trail 11-4. Pitch by Mason. Outside and high for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, come on, Mason. You just gotta go after him. Nip at him here. Get that inside corner. Get something on the ground. One thing he does is he gets a lot of ground balls. Nice.

SPEAKER_09

Throws over to first.

SPEAKER_16

Nice move over to first.

SPEAKER_09

Jepson back in plenty of time. There's a pitch by Mason. Jepson goes. Throw down. Jepson in safely with stolen base. That pitch was a ball, two balls, no strikes to Cherkis.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, throw was a little up, but I don't think I don't even I don't think a perfect throw would have got him on that one. He was at the base by the time he caught it. He had a great jump.

SPEAKER_09

We will, of course, have game two of this doubleheader uh approximately 30 minutes after this one, and then we'll be back on the air this Thursday from Lamar's. Here's the pitch. Outside corner for strike one. Two balls, one strike. I have to talk to John and see if we need to go up a little early and test out some of the food in Lamar's before the game.

SPEAKER_16

Well, there's there's plenty of spots, let me tell you. I'm more in for dessert than I am for I'm telling you that's I'd be fine going there.

SPEAKER_09

As our boss stands behind us.

SPEAKER_16

Here we go.

SPEAKER_09

Ball popped up on the infield. Nobody can see it.

unknown

Who's got it? Who's got it?

SPEAKER_16

Here we go.

SPEAKER_09

JJ Hope comes all the way over from short.

SPEAKER_16

Great job by JJ for the second out. Yeah, JJ had a beat on it all the way. Shayner immediately took himself out of the play. I don't think he saw it initially, so he backed up. And then you can just kind of see it. Everybody's kind of looking, and JJ, great job by the shortstop coming up, taking command.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Cook to the plate. Yeah, that was almost like the Bermuda Triangle single that they got a while ago. Here's the pitch by Mason. Outside corner for strike one, no balls one strike.

SPEAKER_16

That's that high strike, you know. That I wish he would have called on Jepson. I mean, we'd go back to that any mic. I mean after this pitch here.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's really the difference of the ballgame.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, that we talked about it. We make that play over here on right field, that's two outs, nobody on, and they score five runs after that. You know, so and you take those five runs, it's a six-four ball game.

SPEAKER_09

Mason with a long look in here. Jepson sizeable lead out at second base. Mason steps off and looks back.

SPEAKER_16

Jepson can hurt you in so many ways, and one of them is obviously with his wheels. Yeah, they really gotta keep him close.

SPEAKER_09

Mason deals to the plate. Just fouled off. Just got a piece of that and they looked fouled off out of play down third baseline. Yeah, Jepson's really trying to get in Mason's head out there. He's dancing around, starting, stopping.

SPEAKER_16

What? I tell you what, Mason, Mason's a tough kid. He is a tough kid. He doesn't let those things bother him. He turns around, comes and throws a strike.

SPEAKER_09

Mason steps off, looks back. Looks in. No balls, two strikes to cook. Here's the pitch. Jepson goes. And that hits him.

SPEAKER_16

So you gotta send. He's gotta go back to third. What are they calling here?

SPEAKER_09

I think they're saying it. Oh, it is a hit by pitch. Jepson will have to go back to second base. So that is the fourth hit by pitcher of the game by the Crusader pitching staff.

SPEAKER_16

You know, I don't know if you watch how much college baseball you watched over the weekend, but this is a big topic. Was these kids, they come to the plate now, and he he was no exception. They have all this gear on, and they and they crowd the plate, and and when they're turning the question is, is their body over the plate?

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_16

You know, and and that to me looked like it could have been one of those situations.

SPEAKER_09

Mason long look in and he steps off.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's getting a really good jump off of Mason. And you know, I'm like I was telling you the last game, Mike, you're you're stealing off the pitcher, you're not stealing off the catcher. And and yeah. Cal gets he gets a huge jump. Uh he he has the whole game. He I mean he's had like three stolen bases, and all of them have just been huge jumps.

SPEAKER_09

I think it's gonna be a double steal here based on the way these runners are in position out there. Here's the pitch. Delayed double steal, but it was a double steal. Yeah. Pops out the gas went. Dylan calls him off and makes the catch out in center field for the third out.

SPEAKER_16

Great job by Dillon to call him off and take charge of that.

SPEAKER_09

That will end the inning. Two runners on, East unable to push anybody across. We'll head to the bottom of the fifth. Crusaders trail, 11 to 4. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We are back. I'm Mike Skagggs, joined by Broadcliffe Hall of Famer John Tritt. We are headed to the bottom of the fifth pitching change for these Thai Black Raiders. Cal Chamberlain is now on the mound to finish this game off, and he'll face Carol Gaswent and state batting average leader Mason Moravik.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I mean Chamberlain obviously we're very familiar with him pitching over at North. I had the privilege I umpiring his dad when his dad was pitching at UNI. Healing grad, I'm trying to think about what year his dad would have been in the early 90s. And then I was umpiring college when his dad was pitching at UNI, and they came and played Morningside. And that the privilege uh of umping him. So Dang, you're old, John. I am old, man. I am really old.

SPEAKER_09

You've done it all in the baseball world.

SPEAKER_16

We look at the positives here, Mike. I mean, we were just talking about it. We're out hitting them nine to eight.

SPEAKER_09

Yep.

SPEAKER_16

And we've been talking about how our hitting has improved, improved, improved, and and and this is definitely one of the positives. We are hitting the ball really well tonight.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, we're hitting it. They're just they're getting guys on and they're getting extra base hits, and that's that's been the difference in this game. First pitch way outside to Carroll for ball one, one ball, no strikes. Next pitch by Chamberlain inside for ball two, two balls, no strikes. Yeah, East has 11 runs on eight hits and two errors. Crusaders have four runs on nine hits and one error. Here's pitch by Chamberlain. Fouled off by Carroll. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I wonder if this is how they're gonna use Chamberlain. Are they using him as a as a reliever and a spot starter? But uh I'm gonna have to look up his stats here, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he's started four games, he's 4-0. Yeah. Teams are batting 176 against him. He's got a 2.58 ERA, he's struck out 34 batters.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, two strikes to Carroll. Here's the pitch. Nice fouled off into the net.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Tommy's just just been solid again. We talk about it. He's solid at the plate, makes contact. You know, you put the ball and play in high school baseball, and anything can happen. And he's he's he's done an excellent job of doing that.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by Chamberlain. Popped up out into short right field. Bodie Colling settles under it for the first out. That will bring Nathan Gaswin to the plate. Struck out both times up. First time swinging, second time got caught looking. He'll be followed by Moravic. Here's the pitch of Nathan. First pitch again, way outside. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Chamberlain, Chamberlain's got some decent velocity. He's coming from the left side, so it makes it even look quicker. And uh he throws that throws that hanging curve.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch of Nathan in there for a strike. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he throws that hanging curve. That's just it's kind of wicked.

SPEAKER_09

Um here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Nice cut by Nathan.

SPEAKER_09

Swinging him out. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he had a nice cut at that one.

SPEAKER_09

Chamberlain looks in and deals. Pitch is high for ball one. Ball two, two balls, two strikes. Yeah, that pitch before that. The one summer I played fast pitch softball looked like me against Ken Schlickte. He made me look really stupid. Here's a pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch inside.

SPEAKER_16

Legendary Schlickte. God rest his soul. He's uh uh I used to run into him up in the Ireton area.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Nice. Lined over the second baseman's head. Gas went on with the single. That will bring Mason Moravic to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, come on, Mason. Let's let's not end it now, huh?

SPEAKER_09

And he's got to be feeling good about things.

SPEAKER_16

I know he doesn't know he's got the highest batting average in the state, but you know, Nathan or Mason does a really good job. He keeps that that chin tucked into it into his right shoulder to keep it steady, and he just does a nice job of stroke.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Outside, nice outside.

SPEAKER_09

Ball one, one ball, no strikes. We are bottom of the fifth. Crusaders trail 11 to 4.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I'd like to see what kind of move he's got over the first. I if I remember right, it's a pretty good one.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

There we go. Trouble.

SPEAKER_09

Grounds into the double play.

SPEAKER_16

Great play by East on that one.

SPEAKER_09

That will retire the side and in the inning. We head to the top of the sixth, 11-4, Crusaders Trail. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_13

You're listening to FM 88.1 KFHC Ponka Sioux City, and KOIA, Storm Lake, Siouxland Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We head here to the top of the sixth. East High leads Bishop Heelen 11 to 4. East will send Cal Chamberlain, Lyndon, Lincoln McCaffrey, and Frankie Steuze to the plate here to get this inning started. Well, he might not have the highest batting average in the state anymore, but he definitely does on the team.

SPEAKER_16

You know, if there wasn't a runner on first base, that's slow roller. He might have beat that out. But uh great play by East in that inning.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Squares, bunts it Moravic fields it, wheels, throws. Shaner not able to hang on. Chamberlain beats that out for an infield single.

SPEAKER_16

Great play by Moravic fielding that uh just maybe a just a tiny little short hop over the first, and it just kind of bounced out of uh Shaner's glove there. Tough play by Shaner to make.

SPEAKER_09

Another small black mark on the on the evening for the Crusaders.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I mean I mean. Yeah, I can't give him a hit on that. That's got to go in as an error.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it was an error. They gave him an error.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch McCaffrey was in there for a strike. No balls, one strike. That pitch high for ball one, one ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Mason. Mason doesn't waste any time. He's just getting it getting a go.

SPEAKER_09

Delivers that ball hit out to Nathan in right field. Settles under it, makes the catch for out number one.

SPEAKER_16

Took a couple steps back and then a couple forward and settled underneath it.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he needed a little bit of music. It looks like a new dance move out there. We'll call that the gas wind.

SPEAKER_16

Hey, it doesn't matter how it gets caught as long as it gets caught, right?

SPEAKER_09

Absolutely. We'll we'll take the out any way we can get it. That'll bring Frankie Steuze to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

All right, Mason. Let's manufacture a nice little ground ball here and get into a double play.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch on the outside corner for strike one, no balls, one strike. Moravic's got a lot of heart and a lot of confidence. Yeah, he does. Here's the pitch. Fouled off down the first baseline for strike two. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

You know, I mean, anybody that's caught at any level, you you've all we've all caught these pitchers that that can just nip and tuck and and have you know have a have a good good curve ball. Nice pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Fouled off. Count remains, no balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

And they have a good curve ball, usually a good slider, but they're just they drive hitters nuts. And and Mason's one of them. He just he's he finds a way to get a strike. He gives up a hit or two, but always battles back and gets out of the inning.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch just low for ball one, one ball, two strikes. Give a shout out to Andrew and Lincoln. And Marie and Sioux City. She's probably sitting by the pool or making sure the pool is all clean.

SPEAKER_16

But there's that ground ball I wanted to see.

SPEAKER_09

Oh that ball just off Heaton's glove at second base. Steuze reaches on the single. Chamberlain will go to third.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he put that just to the just to the right of Heaton. Um Leander.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he had to go a long way to get to that.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, we I don't know if he would have made that play even if he catches it.

SPEAKER_09

Leander will step in. He struck out twice and flew out to Tommy Carroll.

SPEAKER_16

I'd like to see us move our guys over just a little bit to the right.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch, swing and a miss, strike one. No balls, one strike. Need the pitcher's best friend here double play, get out of this inning.

SPEAKER_16

Well, that was I mean, that last at bat. I mean, that's a ground ball that we need him to manufacture. They just kind of hit it in a spot. He hits that ball five feet more to the left, it's a double play ball, and we're out of the inning.

SPEAKER_09

One ball, one strike. Runners at first and third. One out. Yeah. Top of the sixth.

SPEAKER_16

With Mason throwing, I'd like to see us play a little more.

SPEAKER_09

Ball gets away from Erickson. Steuze will head down to second. Great job. Runners now at second and third.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, great job by Erickson blocking it. Gave up the guy going to second, but I mean that thing could have been a lot worse. Could have got to the backstop.

SPEAKER_09

Mason steps off. Long look in. Just low. Ball three. Three balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Mason doesn't want to give him anything. They get in his wheelhouse with guys in scoring position. You know, I mean, worst case scenario is we load the bases up, giving us force out at any base.

SPEAKER_09

Ashcraft do up next. Here's the pitch. Outside ball four. Leander walks to load the bases. That will bring Ashcraft to the plate, and he would be followed by Jepson.

SPEAKER_16

Got a change. Oh, we got pinch runner coming in 15. Uh that's Caden Vikul uh Caden uh Vikulskis. That's a uh healing name from my era. Your wife Anne would know the Vikulskis. Wonder if that's any relation.

SPEAKER_09

Ashcraft doubled his first time up and has grounded out second to first and short to first his last two times.

SPEAKER_16

Well, let's see him ground out here again, right up the middle for a nice double play ball.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch by Mason.

SPEAKER_16

We're giving up the run. I'm kind of surprised that they were not playing a little in on the corners. I mean, there he there he's bringing him in.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch fouled off for strike one, no balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Chase was about seven feet behind the behind the bag there. Now he's he's moved up, coming up about grass high. Same thing with first baseman.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Outside ball one, one ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

This is a this is a huge out, huge at bat.

SPEAKER_09

Long look in by Mason. He delivers. Pitch fouled off for strike two, one ball, two strikes. Hoping to have former Healing pitcher and current Iowa Hawkeye pitcher Jaron Bleeker for an interview between games. And we'll also have executive director of Catholic Radio Tim Swadeen.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Tim's gonna uh speak a little bit in between the games.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch by Mason just under Shaner's glove. One run will score, two runs will score. Runners at the corners.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Shaner's kicking himself. He's kicking himself. That's a ball that you gotta have. And uh and he knows it. Um worst case scenario, you gotta knock that thing down.

SPEAKER_09

And now you you bring up Jephson and that makes a score 13-4, Black Raiders. Runners at first and third with one out.

SPEAKER_16

The job Mason's done here. I mean, he's manufacturing three ground balls on the infield.

SPEAKER_09

He's done his part.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the first pitch. Bunt foul. Everybody will go back.

SPEAKER_16

I was gonna say that.

SPEAKER_09

They're trying to get that 14th run across and get that 10-run lead.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, that there's no question. They're trying to they're trying to get that 10-run 10th run in there. I mean, he gets that ball down here, then we don't have a s we don't have a chance at him at first.

SPEAKER_09

Mason with a long look in.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Chase, you gotta come in just a little more.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

And on the throw down to second, the run will score. Makes a score 14-4. Ashcraft down at second. Jepson at the plate. One ball, one strike, one out here in the top of the sixth inning.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, you gotta keep battling here, Mason. I mean, just keep doing what you're doing. Uh, you're getting ground balls. I mean, that's your job. Get them to hit a ground ball.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Way outside. Two balls, one strike. This East team reminds me a lot of the East team last year that went into the state tournament as the number one seed, but ended up losing in that first round. So big swing and a miss there by Jepson. Two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he he smile. He knew he took a he took a gigantic swing at that. And uh.

SPEAKER_09

If we'd have had the window open, I think that would have rustled some papers up here with that wind.

SPEAKER_16

Hey, it it's to me it looked like a 95 mile an hour fastball going right by him.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Three balls, two strikes. Ashcraft down at second. Jepson at the plate, he'll be followed by Cherkis. East has pushed three runs across here in the top of the six. They lead 14-4. Mason Long look in. Yeah. Delivers to the plate. Pitch fouled off. Count remains. Three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he'll be a nice addition for Western Kentucky. He looks like the kind of kid that could be an impact player right away for them.

SPEAKER_09

Mason checks a runner at second, deals to the plate. Fouled off again. Three balls, two strikes, runner at second. East leads 14-4 here in the top of the sixth.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, Carroll's Carroll's moving over. Carroll's playing him to pull. He's giving him that left uh he's giving him the left field line there. And that's exactly where where Jepsen's trying to go. Outside corner pitch, and Jepsen was trying to take that thing right down the left field line. Good battle. Like this. Good battle between uh Moravic and Jepson. Moravik's not backing down. It's giving him everything he's got here.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by Mason. Swing and a miss. Strike three. He got him.

SPEAKER_16

Nice pitch.

SPEAKER_09

That's out number two. Great job by Mason on that on that at bat.

SPEAKER_16

He took, he took, you know, he took some speed off of that. That wasn't, I don't think that was a curve. Looked to me like that was just a straight up changeup.

SPEAKER_09

Yep.

SPEAKER_16

And Jeffson, nice smile. You know, he smiles at him and says, good pitch, young man.

SPEAKER_09

So two outs here in the top of the sixth. First pitch in there to Cherkis is a strike. No balls, one strike. Again, the score is 14-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Mason deals.

SPEAKER_16

Not a bad pitch. Not a bad pitch. I like it. Come up with the fist. See if you can't get him to to swing and jam him on one.

SPEAKER_09

Mason comes set at the belt, and here's the pitch. In there for strike two. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I'll have to ask uh Ravik in between games what that pitch was he threw to him. I'm sure I'll get a grin.

SPEAKER_09

Mason check the runner at second. And he livers.

SPEAKER_17

Oh.

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

The thing about his pitch is it doesn't break till right like right in front of the plate, so these guys think that pitch is high. And then it just kind of dips right at the last second.

SPEAKER_09

And the pitch. Swing and a miss, strike three.

SPEAKER_16

Great job.

SPEAKER_09

Two strikeouts in the inning from Moravic. East pushes three across. We'll go to the bottom of the sixth inning. Crusaders trail 14-4. They'll need a run or two to extend this game. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_08

SPEAKER_06

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We're back here in the bottom of the sixth inning. Crusaders will send Chase Beck, Dylan Knapp, and JJ Hope to the plate, needing at least one to extend this game. They trail 14-4.

SPEAKER_16

Let's uh let's look at some of the things that are going in our in the right direction here, Mike. I mean, our hitting, we're out hitting these 10 to 9. Um, let's talk a little bit about the job Mason Moravic did. I mean we he did everything that he needed to do. He got the ground balls. I mean, we we say for what it is, we we should have made a couple of those plays to get him out of the inning. Absolutely. And we didn't, and they were tough, they were tough outs, they were tough ground balls. But uh what a job he he did coming in.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch to Chase fouled off out of play down the first baseline for strike one, no balls, one strike ball outside, one ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Sweeping curve ball that uh Chamberlain likes to throw to try to nip the outside corner, but it just didn't break in time. There. Yeah, he came back with the exact same pitch and and caught that outside corner. That's a tough pitch to hit. That's that thing. It looks like it's gonna be way outside and then just sneaks in there.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch high. Two balls, two strikes. Dylan Knapp due up next. He'll be followed by JJ Hope. Here's the pitch. Outside, ball three, three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he wanted that. Catcher did a good job framing it, but it was a little outside.

SPEAKER_09

Cherkis and Chamberlain both wanted that. Nice pitch. Fouled into the net by Beck. Count remains three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, one thing Cherkis does, and uh does the same thing that Peyton does is that they're just they're masters of framing the ball. And and when I when I say that, that they're masters of framing the ball, they they can frame the ball so well they'll they'll get that extra three to four inches on the outside-inside corner, just by the way they place their glove.

SPEAKER_09

And the pitch way outside ball four. Beck reaches with the walk. Good at bat. That will bring Dylan Knapp to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Knapp hitting 358 coming into the game, or 348, excuse me. One of the kids that's transformed uh tremendously.

SPEAKER_09

Chamberlain checks a runner at first, swing and abyss by Dillon. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, good pitch by Chamberlain low on the outside corner. Dylan didn't miss it by much.

SPEAKER_09

Long look over at first, deals to the plate. Inside to Dillon, ball one, one ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, the infield or outfield's got the shift down a little bit. Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_09

High for ball two, two balls, one strike. Chase back at first, no outs.

SPEAKER_16

We might have to open this window, Mike. Bottom of the six. We can get some air in here.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's it's getting a little toasty. Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_16

Just missed that. He just missed it.

SPEAKER_09

Fouled off into the yard across the street. Brings the count to two balls, two strikes. JJ Hope, do up next. Long look toward first and the pitch. Nice. Gets sharply back up right at the center fielder. He took two steps and made the play. First out. That will bring JJ Hope to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Center fielder playing shallow and moving, and you know, he had the shift on uh over a little more toward right center and uh just didn't even have to move.

SPEAKER_09

Chamberlin checks back at first. Yeah, that pitch in there for strike one, no balls one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, nice curve ball. Backdoor curve on the outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

There's the pitch. Ohside corner for strike two.

SPEAKER_16

Well a little bit up, but uh yeah, now you gotta protect. I mean, anything close, you gotta protect. That's a tough pitch to hit either way.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Inside corner for strike three, caught looking. That's out number two. That will bring Peyton Erickson to the plate.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he did a good job going outside, outside, coming back and jamming him on the inside.

SPEAKER_09

Last chance for the Crusaders to try to extend this game. Outside corner for strike one, no balls one strike.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he's got that thing working now that that backdoor curve.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Outside corner again for strike two, no balls, two strikes. Crusaders down to their last strike to try to extend this game. Chamberlain with the pitch. Yeah. Way outside. Ball one, one ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, he took a little bit off of that. Uh tried to get him a kind of a looping curve ball in the outside corner. Um just missed, a little bit low.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Chamberlain checks back at first, deals to the plate, swing and a miss, strike three. And that will do it for game number one. Crusaders fall 14 to 4. And John, the the one school you don't want to get run rolled by is your is your biggest rival.

SPEAKER_16

I mean, uh we did a lot of good things, Mike. I mean, we hit the ball well. We had as many hits as I've seen us have in any game this year. You know, we didn't go up to the CYO tournament. And uh pitching, I mean, Nathan uh had the one inning where he kind of they you know they manufactured some runs and then and then the the inning with uh Mason uh actually threw a good inning, came in, did his job, and and a couple miscues, and and they get the three runs, ten run real. So um if I'm coach, I'm gonna go out there, I'm gonna talk to him, I'm gonna say, hey, this is what we did good. We we ran the bases well, we hit the ball well, we made contact, we didn't strike out a lot, you know, in comparison. And, you know, let's build on that. We got Shaner coming back in this next game, you know, and he's got to start off good. He's got to come come right at him and get us a couple good innings so we can get our momentum going again and just start all over in the second game.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, I mean, we've we showed in that first game that we can we can hit the east pitching. I mean, it's some of the best pitching, and it's definitely gonna be the best hitting that they've seen up to now and the rest of the season. I don't think they'll face another team that can hit the ball as well as is this east uh high black Raider team. And you know, like you said, they did a lot of good things. Uh just a couple of missed cues and and misplays on grounders that, you know, like you said, Mason did exactly what he needed to do. He got the ground balls. We just weren't able to execute. And uh, you know, that that was the difference. We went from from a close game and and we were running along at a really good clip to all of a sudden it turned into a two-hour and 20-minute game, and and here we are. We've got about probably 30 minutes before the next pitch, maybe a little sooner.

SPEAKER_16

Yeah, I think they'll go quicker because it's it's almost 20 after now.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, I see we've got a chance of rain coming in, and there's no lights here at Bishop Mueller, so we're gonna take a four-minute break, and we will be back and we'll have uh Tim Squadin'.

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_13

Hi there. This is Tim Swinney, the Executive Director of Soulian Catholic Radio. And I am going to take a little bit of time between games to bring us a little bit of an update on something that's very important. We appreciate our partnership with Bishop Healan so greatly. It's so important for us to know that we work together in alliance with several things. And it's important for us to know that our working together is bringing a difference out in the community. Right now, I have the director of enrollment, and she is in a critical time because it is about the time frame when parents are making a decision when they want to make the decision to come to Bishop Healan. I know from hearsay we were at roughly 1620 as far as students in the system last year. Correct, correct. Give me an update on where we're at right now.

SPEAKER_15

Yeah, we're having a great, great spring. Having a ton, ton of interests and welcoming many, many really great families to our system. So we're so fortunate, so fortunate.

SPEAKER_13

You have done a wonderful job.

SPEAKER_15

Well, Tim, you're very kind, but you know what? Um we have a great product that we put out every year. It's really not about me. It's about what the kind of people that come out, the servant leaders that come out of Bishop Healing schools.

SPEAKER_13

So I I know we're at capacity in some grades. Yes. Give us some guidance as to what might still be available for the families that are still listening out.

SPEAKER_15

Correct, correct. We have room in preschool in two of our four preschools. We have room in kindergarten in uh two of our kindergartens. We are at capacity in fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade in our system for the first time in our 78-year history.

SPEAKER_13

That's fantastic. It is. That is fantastic. It really is. You know, the thing that I was always thinking about is, you know, your role obviously is director of enrollment right now. But you have an educational background. Yes, I do. You you were at the best life.

SPEAKER_15

Other than being enrollment director, I was uh for for 37 years I taught art at uh Bishop Healing High School.

SPEAKER_13

We won't say how many years that was, but we're almost the same age. That's right, that's right.

SPEAKER_15

I was a year behind him in school.

SPEAKER_17

It's true.

SPEAKER_15

But we're probably the same years. Yes. Because I didn't start till I was six. So um yes, so I uh I just loved teaching at Bishop Healing. I skipped to work and I skipped home, and it was so good for me and my seven children who are Healing grads, and we just felt felt so fortunate. Um and um and now I'm on the other side of that um talking to new families that are coming to our system and and and that's been great too.

SPEAKER_13

You know, the funny part of this is as a teacher, it probably gives you greater insight into the advantages of a Bishop Healan education, maybe more so than an outside enrollment director who was hired just as well.

SPEAKER_15

I I that's true. My experience as a teacher and as a parent and as a former student all contributes to that. That I really uh have a lot of different perspectives of our system.

SPEAKER_13

Well and and the positives that come from a Bishop Healin education.

SPEAKER_15

Tim, I would have given blood. I would have picked up popcans on I-29 to keep my kids in our schools because of the kind of people. You know, friends, we can't do it alone. It's like uh and it's tougher and tougher. We live in a crazy world. And I don't think it's ever been more difficult to be a child or more b difficult to be a parent in in the history of the world. And I don't say that lightly, uh, what's going on today. And I just felt so fortunate that I had uh partners with Bishop Healing Schools that um we had the same moral compass and they were teaching those Catholic values that we want to instill in all our kids. So um I j I'm just giving back because they've given so much to my family, and that's the truth.

SPEAKER_13

I appreciate that very much. Well, you know as well as I do. I'm a Healing grad, kids went to Healan, grandkids are going to Healen. So I I'm invested in this too. I really feel a great investment in this. Which which which is why I wanted to bring you in and have this conversation. Obviously, there is a price to Catholic education. The state of Iowa has made this much more above affordable with the F ESA program. Correct. Discuss for the people, everybody's heard about it. Discuss a little bit what it means to unknown families who are still looking at the sure, absolutely.

SPEAKER_15

So I'm gonna start, I'm gonna back up a little bit here. So in Iowa, school districts get their money from local property taxes, from the state of Iowa, and from the federal government. And this will be the fourth year this fall, but now the state of Iowa is saying that the money we give to every school district to educate a child can follow that child to a private school. And this is our fourth year of that. It's an awful lot of money. It's eight thousand one hundred and forty-eight dollars. Well, Catholic education is not cheap. So this fall our tuition will be ten thousand five hundred. I can't believe we're over ten thousand. Uh but we're there, friends, unfortunately. And um, but having that ESA b uh makes it twenty three fifty-two for a family to come and it's payable over ten months from August to May. So it really makes it reasonable. Still a sacrifice on behalf of that family, but uh much more reasonable than we've been in the past.

SPEAKER_13

Make no mistake about it. If I remember right, from my daughter, my oldest daughter graduated in 2000. That was just about what we were paying at that time. Sure. Somewhere in the area of 2,500 bucks. So put that in the year $2,000 in 2026. Yeah. That that's an incredible.

SPEAKER_15

It is incredible. It is absolutely incredible. And um it has really been a game changer for our system as well. Um we have we have uh probably 1,400 families that are getting an ESA.

SPEAKER_13

That's fantastic. Yes. Okay, there are students that are leaving friends at a previous school. They're sitting there saying, Wow, what am I gonna walk into as I as my parents make the decision to move to Healen? Tell about the welcoming process for those students who are entering in the middle years of an educational process.

SPEAKER_15

Absolutely. And actually that's where we've seen our biggest growth from middle school and high school. That's where we're seeing we're not getting a huge growth in um kindergarten and preschool, and we'd love to, we'd absolutely love to, but we're seeing people in middle school and high school come into our schools. And um it's a very scary thing to pick up and leave your friends and go to another school. But by and large, I feel that our kids have felt welcome, have felt part of our community, have felt that um they see immediately that this is going to be better for them. Um when kids come in in shadow. I haven't had a child yet who spent a day with us say, I don't want to go the next day. Um because um we are very different. There's all kinds of things we're doing that is good for children, and they recognize that as well. And so um it's been it's been a really wonderful journey that I'm gonna be starting my sixth year um of seeing how we have grown through the past six years and and how everything has changed and uh it's it's uh it's been glorious to be honest. It's been divine.

SPEAKER_13

You know, one of the things to follow along that case same concept, I would guess the principals at each elementary school recognize newer students. So they might attach. Absolutely. We're doing those kinds of things, yeah. Absolutely. I I really think that's critical because leaving your friends at another school and coming here is daunting. I mean, think think of the time you went to college for the first time. You're going to introduce yourself to a bunch of new people.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_13

And you're doing this at a younger age. Right. So it's a little bit more anxiety-driven than maybe it could be.

SPEAKER_15

Absolutely. And we like to take kids to the Dairy Queen with some new kids from their class. Yep. Or take you know, go to some place and meet and exchange some phone numbers. And our kids have been by and large so open to new friends. Um we're s we're pretty small still. Yeah. And um, you know, we cap at each classroom at twenty-two. And so it's that's not overwhelming, yeah, you know. And so um they're our kids by and large are very, very generous with their their time and their spirit um to new kids and recognize that they're living out their faith as part of it. And um it's really been I I I just hear good things when I check up with kids. Um and of course, communities are embracing um these new families, they're good people, we're all on the same team. Um it's not as scary as it seems in the end. Uh Robert Frost said, make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, one is gold. And I tell these kids, okay, they may seem silver today, but these will be your golden friends real quickly.

SPEAKER_13

Very cool. For me personally, it it is also very important to keep that Catholic identity. And I understand that we take some non-Catholic students as far as our new students. So there's obviously advantages outside of the religious side of it. Speak to those.

SPEAKER_15

Oh my gosh. I mean, c families will tell me that that come from other faiths that we're praying now before meals, which we've never done because they're doing that at school. We're praying for others now, which they've never done because they're doing that for school. That kids are because we're talking constantly uh about uh serving the Lord and serving our communities, that that these kids are making a difference and there's they're saying to their parents, let's do this service project, let's help with this, whatever project is going on. Because we are constantly every every school has mass every week. Every school has confessions three or four times a year. Um every school has uh a um middle school and up is is having um um retreats for their class. Um we are developing their Catholic faith. That is the only reason we're to you know, in this effort because that is our number one priority. Um and so um it does wear off on kids. They're pleasantly surprised new parents that come on board. And every year at the high school we've had two or three kids become Catholic, and that has been and that entire Catholic high school is supporting them and behind them, and it's oh so beautiful. I love to go to those masses because it's really something how these kids encourage them.

SPEAKER_13

OCIA is one of my favorite things. Yeah, it is. It really is one of my favorite things. Yeah, and it's so well done. It is so obviously in my math in my head, you're having an increase of seven, eight percent, but we can do better. Right. There's got to be families out there who are interested. How do we contact them?

SPEAKER_15

Absolutely, I'm all over the internet. Um, just go ahead and call my phone number, my cell number, call me. I'm a I'm a um empty nester, so please call me at night and call me in the morning and call me in ten minutes. Whenever you call me, we'll get together, we'll talk about it. I'll tell you everything, all those concerns you have, I'll tell you everything you need to know to alleviate those, and um we would love, love, love, love to have your family join our family. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_13

I can't tell you how enjoyable this is. Thank you, Tim. You and I have been.

SPEAKER_15

We are so grateful to Catholic Radio, it's which has, oh my gosh, been so good to our community in so many ways. Um I know uh Mike, I I have seven kids and none of them live in Sioux City. They're all familiar with Catholic radio because they're all um listening to healing events um whenever wherever they're at and um whatever time it works for them. But uh we're so we're so grateful. Thank you. Thank you. Seriously, thank you. There's so many good people out there that just can't get to our events anymore, but want to be part of it. And we want them part of it. And so Catholic Radio has a I mean, in even if you didn't do like I know you're changing lives every day with your programming. Right. But even if you didn't do that, you're keeping our healing community alive and well, and so we're so grateful for that.

SPEAKER_13

So grateful. Thank you so much. Absolutely too. Grace, I'm gonna go back to you for 30 seconds and then come back if you would please.

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_13

This is a this is Tim Sweden again, and we're just gonna have a small pitch, and then I'm gonna give it back to the guys who do the action who are much better at this than I am. Sunday night, July, June 14th, we have Curious Catholics at the St. Michael's Parish Center. There's no cost, food and beverage. We're gonna have a movie that Father Schoen has picked. It's called For Greater Glory, and it relates to the Civil War related to the Catholic oppressed in 1917 Mexico. Please come. There'll be food, there'll be beverage. It'll be a great movie. We've done a few of these and it's been so successful. Please, if you get the opportunity, Sunday night, St. Michael's Paris Center, 5 o'clock. And now back to the guys with the action. Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_09

Welcome back, everybody, as we get our very special guest in here for an interview, and we'll keep him as long as we can. So we'll keep you up to date on the game and everything else. But we've got uh Healing legend, Jaron Bleaker here with us, former Healing pitcher, and now over at the University of Iowa. Welcome to the booth.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_09

Glad you could come up. Uh, really appreciate you doing that. So tell us tell everybody a little bit about what's going on with you since you left Healan.

SPEAKER_10

Um I uh currently uh go to the University of Iowa where I uh play baseball. Just finished up my sophomore season.

SPEAKER_09

And I know last summer you played some summer ball up in St. Cloud.

SPEAKER_10

St. Cloud in the Northwoods, yep.

SPEAKER_09

And taking this summer off for the first time, since you can't even remember the last time you didn't play baseball in the summer, is that right?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I don't remember last summer where baseball wasn't a part of it. So a little weird, but I'm getting used to it.

SPEAKER_09

So I know earlier this year, uh, as you guys are going through the Big Ten schedule, uh, you guys did face UCLA. Uh thank you for striking out Will Gasparino, former Longhorn who's a brewing now. He left us and uh they can have him. So what was it like uh, you know, facing a team of that caliber? Because you know they were number one pretty much all year and came into the tournament as number one seed, eventually got eliminated early. But so I mean, what was it like facing some of these these ranked teams as you were going through the Big Ten season?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, um honestly I just looked at it as uh an opportunity. Um it's really fun going up against the best. Um and I just I don't put any pressure on myself, and I just like to go out there and just enjoy the moment. Um it's it's fun to it's fun to compete against the best. Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, and that's uh there's definitely quite a bit of that uh you know for you guys in the Big Ten this year, and it's always fun. Uh your mom, she does a great job of keeping everybody up to date on social media with what's going on with you. And uh I know you were over at the state soccer tournament yesterday to watch baby sister for the last time, and uh a huge chunk of the healing cheering section is gonna be gone now that the the Bleaker family's gone. I remember the first time I met your dad, it was we were still over in Muscatine, and so it it's it's been a lot of years. So what are you majoring in at Iowa?

SPEAKER_10

Uh exercise science.

SPEAKER_09

Exercise science. And uh what do you guys lose a lot from this year's team? You have a lot coming back next year. What what can what can Hawkeye fans expect for Iowa baseball next year?

SPEAKER_10

Um we g we keep our core pitching staff, we got a lot of pitchers coming back, a lot of young guys coming back that got their first year of experience. So pitching wise, uh I think we're gonna be in a good spot. Um we lost a lot of production at the plate, um, a lot of guys like Gable Mitchell and Caleb Wolf. So we just gotta you know replace those guys and the transfer portal and upcoming freshmen and yeah, so that's that's about where we're at right now.

SPEAKER_09

So now for you, I know when you were you when you were here at Heal and you were a starter, is is that been is it kind of been a combination of starting, coming in in relief, coming in middle innings for you at Iowa, or or what's it what's it been a mix of?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, it's been uh it's been all over the place. Um beginning of the year I started out of the pen and then I um I moved into the starting role for a couple weeks, then I moved back to the pen. So it's uh it's definitely it was definitely a journey, but you just gotta stay fluid and just do your job when you go out there. It's it's the same role every time, just get outs, prep zeros.

SPEAKER_09

Well, I know in conversations with your dad and and listening to you talk, uh I I think I know the answer to this, but what which which do you prefer? Starter coming in, metal relief, being a a uh reliever, closer?

SPEAKER_10

Um honestly, I don't really have a preference. Obviously, starting is pretty cool, um, and you just know when you're gonna throw, so there's benefits to that, but um, I'll come out of the pen, you know, I'll do relief, short, long. It's it's really not a not a big deal to me. Just go out there and perform.

SPEAKER_09

And I believe the last time I heard your name mentioned on the Big Ten Network was during the Big Ten tournament, and I think it ended with Spectacular Bleaker. So you I think you had a pretty good outing that day. And uh, you know, really just uh I remember watching you, I you know, your memories that you provided for for Bishop Healing State Tournament a couple years ago, and uh it's it's great uh that you can come back and and be around this, and I really appreciate you coming up and taking time uh to talk baseball with us. And uh we'd love to have you any other time during the year you want. And uh, you know, if you've still got some eligibility, we'll take you to this game.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_09

All right, thanks very much, Jarren. Appreciate you very much. Jaron Bleecker, former Healing standout, and now with the University of Iowa.

unknown

Thanks, Jared.

SPEAKER_09

And we had a quick break uh between games, and we are ready to go. We've got Brody Shaner on the mound and Jeff.
