We now interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this broadcast of Crusader Support. We would like to thank the donors, benefactors, and sponsors that make this broadcast possible. We now send you straight to the action on your Catholic Radio Station channel 88.1 FM, AFHC Ponka Snoo City, K-O-I-A-Storm Lake.

SPEAKER_09

Welcome everybody. I am Mike Skaggs, joined by John Tritz. We are here at Bishop Mueller Field for the matchup between the Bishop Healan Crusaders and the West High Wolverines. Last time these two teams met, Healing swept them. They won the first game four to two. And the second game was a nine to eight thriller out at West High. It was a late night.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I was uh hold on here, Mike. My microphone's not on yet. There we go. Can you hear me now? Here we go. Sorry, folks, I had my microphone off there. Um hey Mike, we're at uh over here at Sister of St. Francis Field on Briarcliffe campus, and and let me tell you, this field looks absolutely incredible. Freshly mowed. Um they've done a really good job, and and the weather here is perfect for a doubleheader, and we got two teams. Um one trying to find uh a few replacements for some key players and trying to uh improve their uh their way about them going into playoffs, and the other one is kind of at the bottom of the league, but playing some good baseball and just trying to get better each and every day.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's uh this next two weeks for Healing is gonna be very important in terms of uh getting seating for the state playoffs and where they're gonna be. They've got West tonight, they've got a double header against Sergeant Bluff on Thursday. Saturday they head down to Des Moines for a tournament. They'll play uh state rank Carlisle and Dallas Center Grimes. Then next Tuesday they're back here at home against Council Bluff's Abraham Lincoln, and then Thursday they will be out at East High for that rematch.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we've got some really uh good games here that we need to go after here this week. We've got West tonight, we've got Sergeant Bluff Thursday night, and then we've got two key matchups of possible teams we could see in the playoffs uh down at Dallas Center Grimes. Um this is statement week, is what I'd like to call this a statement for us. I mean, I know we still have East and AL next week uh to kind of finish off the conference, but these games this week from a confidence uh standpoint and from a uh playoff standpoint on where it puts us uh in the uh playoffs uh postseason time, it's huge. It's huge. This week is just huge. I say no uh no other way to put it, but we've got to play good baseball this week.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, absolutely. And then even after that uh doubleheader out at East on July 2nd uh back home on that Monday against Lewis Central. So I mean they uh I know by then the the state pairings and everything will be out, but there's a there's a lot of opportunities for Healing to uh improve uh where they could end up being seeded and whether or not they get a home game at least once uh once the state uh baseball tourney starts.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we've we've got some things that that need to be accomplished this week, and we're at that point in the season. We talked a little bit about it the last uh time out, Mike. We've got to find a lineup, we've got to find a consistent lineup uh that works, that the kids are comfortable with, that the coaches are comfortable with. Um we lost a huge key player in Brody Shaner, who broke his thumb last week sliding into second base. And like I was telling Coach, I mean, it's got to be the next man up. Um this is where some kids, you know, they've been waiting for this opportunity, and here it is. Go out and get it. It presents itself to you, and the kid that wants to go out there and and do the work and hustle uh might you know just might earn himself a position for the rest of the year and then going into next year, maybe.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, it's it's definitely time for some of these younger kids to step up, some of these kids who haven't had an opportunity to play. And uh sorry to sorry to see the injury to Brody uh with broken thumb. It's yeah, you know, pretty obvious that he's he's done for the year, but uh provided some highlights for the Crusaders uh when he was out on the field and uh good kid and and I'm sure that you know he'll be around and uh be giving advice to whoever is is filling in the spot that uh he was he was playing.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, they're talking about uh possibly down the year of making him maybe uh he could do some pinch running, maybe he can get back out there and and do some pitching based off of how they can pad that glove up. There's some things they're thinking about. I mean, but that's down the road right now. He's got a rest, he's just gonna be out, and then they can figure that out. But let's get into the pitching part of it, Mike. You and I talked about the pitching last week, and it's huge. And let's make no bones about it. I mean, it's a huge concern coming toward the end of the year and going into playoffs. We know who number one is. Um two two through five is still a toss-up. You know, we got some af you know, from uh the last double header, Dylan Knapp, we got some great innings after after that first rough start. Dylan really settled in, actually pitched a really good game for six innings after that first inning. And and we need to find more of that, and hopefully tonight with Rodriguez, Moravic, um, we'll probably see Gas one a little a little tonight in the second game. But we need some pitchers to settle in and and just start making a difference here at the end of the season.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, absolutely. We need some consistency and and need to get that rotation put together because whenever tournament time starts uh is not the time that you want to be messing and moving things around. And you know, back to your point about the infield, it's it's time to get it set and leave it and let those kids get used to playing where they're supposed to play, have them where they should be, and just just move forward.

SPEAKER_06

And one thing we're gonna see tonight uh in in in filling in for Brody is we're gonna see Cal Gesey at a full-time roll tonight, playing second base and hitting. So it's gonna be kind of exciting to see what Cal can do with the plate. We know he's got the wheels, we know he's got some speed. Um let's see if he can manufacture a few hits and get his confidence going.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, and it's important. Uh healing struggled a little bit here lately, getting the top of the order on base and then doing something with it whenever they get on. So it's gonna be important for JJ and Peyton and Tommy to get up there and get on base and put some pressure on this West Hyde team. Let's take a quick one-minute break and we'll be back with the starting lineups.

SPEAKER_21

Hello, listeners. I'm Father Travis Crotty, the chaplain of Bishop Healing Catholic High School. As we prepare for this athletic competition with the Crusaders, we want to take an opportunity to offer a pre-game prayer, keeping in mind the safety and the enthusiasm of all sporting events for the safety of our own students and those of our opponents. Let us pray in the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank you, listeners, and go, crusaders.

SPEAKER_03

You're listening to FM 88.1, KFHC, Ponka Sioux City, and KOIA, Storm Lake, Sioux Land Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

We are back. I am here to give you the starting lineups. West comes into this game with a record of 3-21. They're 1-18 in the Missouri River Activities Conference. Leading off for the Wolverines will be Peyton Markowski, and he will be pitching. He's got a batting batting average of 339. Batting second playing catcher will be Lane Monroe. I believe that's John's neighbor.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, it is.

SPEAKER_09

Comes in with a batting average of 214. Uh batting third will be Colin Frazy playing shortstop. He's got a batting average of 297. Batting fourth playing first base will be Caleb Washburn, batting average of 208. Batting fifth, Caden Barker playing left field, batting average 250. Batting sixth, playing second base will be Benton Coyle. He's got a batting average of 237. Batting seventh, playing third base, will be Nate Vall comes in with a batting average of 213. Batting eighth and DH for Braden Black, who will be playing in right field, is Colton Cherkis. He does not have an official at bat this year, so he's got a 0-0-0 batting average. And batting ninth will be Braxton Wolf, batting average of 087, and he'll be playing center field. For the Crusaders, leading off, JJ Hope, number two in the state and hits in 3A with 35 hits, playing shortstop, batting average of 385. Batting second, Peyton Erickson playing catcher. He's got a batting average of 260. Batting third and playing left field. Tommy Carroll, his batting average is 295. Batting fourth and playing center field will be Dylan Knapp. He comes in with a batting average of 301. Batting fifth and playing right field, Nathan Gaswent, batting average of 324. And pitching tonight for the Crusaders in game one will be Alex Rodriguez. He will be batting sixth. And he's got a 292 batting average. Batting seventh. Number nine, Mason Moravic playing first base. He comes in with a batting average of 250. Chase Beck batting eighth. Batting average of 246. He'll be at third. And finishing it off for the Crusaders will be Cal Gesey playing second base. And he has got a perfect batting average of 1,000.

unknown

And playing second base.

SPEAKER_09

And on the mound for West tonight will be Peyton Markowski. He comes in with a record of 0 and 0. He's pitched 30.2 innings. He's got a batting average against him of 242. Given up. 29 hits, 24 runs. 12 of those have been earned. He's walked 16, he's hit five batters, and he struck out 25. He's got a batting a or an ERA of 274. We're going to keep it here, but we're going to pause briefly for the national anthem. We're going to be on Game Changer tonight as well. So if you want to watch the action from home or on the road or out in Arizona where the LeFavers are, you'll be able to hear John and I with the play-by-play as well.

SPEAKER_06

So last time when we played West, uh Mike, two things. Lane Monroe, the catcher, was not active. He was hurt. So we're going to see a different catcher in there. And good kid. Obviously, like we said earlier, he's a neighbor of mine and just a really good kid. So I'm kind of looking forward to watching him play. But he'll make a difference. But the other thing is Markowski. Markowski gave us absolute fits in the first probably four innings of that first inning. You're listening to it. He threw really well. And it's important that we come out and we jump on him because he throws strikes for the first pitch. He's he's usually right around uh right around the plate, doesn't waste too many pitches, and uh and we got opportunity you know to make contact, take some good swings, and open the game up.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, absolutely. We know he's gonna be around the plate, so uh we've got to come out and be ready to swing at that uh first pitch. On the mound for the Crusaders will be Alex Rodriguez. He's started three games, he's got a record of two and one, pitched 15 in third innings. Teams are batting 217 against Alex. He's given up 13 hits, 16 runs, 11 of those have been earned. He's walked nine, he's hit five batters, and he has struck out eight. He has an ERA of 5.02.

SPEAKER_06

You know, when I'm when I look out in the field here right now, uh, Mike, I mean, I'm looking at our infield and and I'm looking at our outfield. We got solid uh Chase Beck at third base, just an unbelievable fielder. Um normally it's a second baseman, but has moved over to third with uh the injury of Schaehner, but he's also played there. Uh we've seen uh uh Gesey, Cal Geecey, what range he has at seconds, got a great glove. Um we got a solid infield, and of course JJ Hope. You know, I I I've made it really clear what I feel about JJ. He's gone from a good ball player, uh uh above let's excuse me, above average ball player uh to an absolute outstanding and excellent shortstop. And then in the outfield, we're as solid as they come across the state. Carroll uh with Carroll uh Knapp and Gaswin. Uh just a solid outfield.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski steps in, swings at the first pitch, hits it right out to Tommy Carroll, takes a step back and makes the play for out number one. One pitch, one out.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, good first pitch by Rodriguez. He needed that. Get him going.

unknown

The catcher.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Lane Monroe to the plate. Yeah, uh Cal Geecey has never played second base until this season, so it'll be he's naturally a third baseman and a pitcher, so it'll be interesting to see him evolve uh at that position.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah. We go.

SPEAKER_09

That ball grounded out to JJ at short, back hands it, throw over. Oh, just off the base. Drew Moravic off the bag. Monroe reaches, got a runner at first base with one out here in the top of the first, no score. Colin Frazy, the shortstop, steps in.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Monroe's got some serious wheels going down the line.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. Yeah, he was fast getting down there. Yeah. Frazy's got 19 hits on the season, four RBIs. He's walked five times, been hit once, and struck out ten times. Pitch gets away from Peyton. Runner will head down to second base.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Peyton's going out and talking to him. He I don't think that's the pitch Peyton was looking for. I mean, that was a fastball, just a little bit to the left of Peyton, and that's uncharacteristic like him to miss that. So my guess is he was he called something else.

SPEAKER_09

Hey, Rod with the look in. Comes set, checks runner at second base, delivers. That pitch high for ball two, two balls, no strikes. Crusaders are in the blue top with white letters and white pinstripe pants with the blue hat and the HC on it. West has gray pants and a black top with green lettering across the front. Here's the pitch. That pitch is outside for ball three. Three balls, no strikes. Caleb Washburn do up next.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, right now Alex's release point is a little high, and uh, you know, and rightfully so, Peyton's just kind of bringing him down, giving him that, bring it down a little bit. Look.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. That hits him. That'll put runners at first and second with one out, and that will bring up Washburn.

SPEAKER_06

Well now Rodriguez has got himself in a little situation here. We got first and second base. Got a force out at any base.

SPEAKER_09

Washburn's got eight RBIs on the season. He's been hit by a pitch three times and walked 11 times. Has nine singles and two doubles on the year. Check the runner at second. Here's the pitch. That pitch in there for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's a good comeback pitch by Rodriguez outside corner fastball. Got a good hitter here in uh Washburn.

SPEAKER_09

Rodriguez comes set. Checks second. And deals. Grounded foul, first base. No balls, two strikes. Caden Barker is due up next.

SPEAKER_06

Almost he almost should have charged that ball. That ball was just kind of dribbling down first base and almost would have took the out. If he would have come just a little bit farther in, he could have got that thing before it went foul.

SPEAKER_09

Washburn steps back in. Throw over to first. They've got him. Oh wow.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I don't blame him on that. We definitely had him on that.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he his foot wasn't back on the bag, but the umpire clear over in front of the shortstop said he was safe. So my mistake, folks.

SPEAKER_06

That's a tough call for him in defense of the ump, where he's positioned, and that's right position for him. Here's the pitch. There you go.

SPEAKER_09

Got him looking for strike three.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, it's a good pitch, Alex on the inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

That's out number two. Still have runners at first and second with two outs for the Wolverines. That will bring Caden Barker to the plate.

unknown

I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_04

The left fielder, number seven, Caden Barker.

SPEAKER_06

Alex hasn't really thrown that curveball yet, Mike, and just been throwing nothing but fastballs and change ups. Here's the pitch. There's that first curve.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch drops in there for strike one.

SPEAKER_06

No balls, one strike. Yeah, I ask him we shall receive, right? I mean, waiting for that thing, and there it goes. Had a nice breaker on it.

SPEAKER_09

You sure you don't have the pitch com on up here and you're telling them what to throw?

SPEAKER_06

I could tell you what, that'd be fun. You know, uh one thing with Peyton is I can read him uh, and I don't know if it's a catcher thing.

SPEAKER_09

Grounded down to third base. Beck will step on the bag, unassisted for out number three. And the Wolverines go fairly quietly, two on two runners on, unable to push anybody across. We will go to the bottom of the first. No score. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Welcome back, everybody. We're headed to the bottom of the first inning. No score. Healan will send JJ Hope, Peyton Erickson, and Tommy Carroll to the plate to get things started.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, one thing we're we're at this point in the season, Mike, where as a team and even as players, we have to start anticipating. We have to anticipate what is going to happen in situations, what other coaches are thinking, what are their tendencies, etc. And tonight's a good actually this is a perfect game to start doing that. Against West, hopefully we can get some runners. We can get ourselves in situation baseball where we can start making other teams try to anticipate what we're gonna do.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, absolutely. In warm-ups, it looks like your neighbor's got a pretty good arm, so yeah. JJ Squares takes that for strike one.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Lane really works at it. He's a good catcher. He's always out throwing the ball in the in the yard, and ever since he's been a little kid. So anxious to see what he can do tonight.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. That pitch hit down the first baseline, foul out of play for strike two. No balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

And JJ Hope here, he's in the top five in three categories. At least at one point he was in hits, uh runs scored, and stolen bases.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the wind up in the pitch. That hit sharply out center field. Center fielder's on his horse. That's in the gap.

SPEAKER_06

That's gonna be a triple, Mike. That's getting to the fence. He's got a big thing.

SPEAKER_09

JJ's going for three. They're holding him up at third base.

SPEAKER_06

JJ Hope leads this off with the triple. Power speed right there, Mike. He just saw it on display.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Peyton Erickson to the plate. Peyton's got a chance to drive in the first run of the ballgame here. Tommy Carroll would be up after Peyton.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we talked about jumping on those first pitches, and JJ didn't he didn't hesitate. He he went for the first three.

SPEAKER_09

See if he decides to steal home here. That pitch bounces in there for a ball. One ball, no strikes. Good start right here for Healen. Checks runner at third, and here's the pitch. That pitch bounces in there for ball two. Two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah. Hope's got Moravik just a little, or excuse me, uh Markowski a little just a little concerned. Uh, and rightfully so. Uh you can tell he's kind of overthrown those first two pitches into the dirt.

SPEAKER_09

Checks JJ over at third base, delivers. That pitch gets away from the catcher.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he's good.

SPEAKER_09

JJ in safely. JJ scores on the pass ball. Healing leads this one one to nothing. It's three balls, no strikes to Peyton Erickson.

SPEAKER_06

That's a good start for the Crusaders. Uh a good start for JJ. Let's just keep it going, Peyton.

SPEAKER_09

Now Markowski can focus at the on the batter at the plate, and here's the pitch. That pitch in there for a strike. Three balls, one strike. Here's the pitch. Bounces in there for ball four. Peyton Erickson draws the walk. We got a runner at first base, no outs. That'll bring Tommy Carroll to the plate. Let's see who the pinch runner is going to be. Courtesy runner, I'm sorry. Got to get the right terminology. I'd like to welcome everybody listening to us on Game Changer. Looks like Jonas Jensen's going to go in and pinch run or courtesy run.

unknown

Courtesy at first base.

SPEAKER_09

Jonas's family's right down in front of us in the front row.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we saw Jonas play just an outstanding first base last week against North. Got a good chance to see him in the field, and Jonas can play. And did a really good job over there.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, bright, bright future for that young man here at Bishop Healing. Absolutely. Markowski checks the runner at first. Deals to the plate. That pitch in there for a strike. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, one thing I was talking about with Coach Taylor about being aggressive, these first pitches. We talked a little bit about that. And you know, I just said, hey, I'd like to see us swinging at more first and second pitches. And he agreed. And Markowski's definitely going to give us that opportunity.

SPEAKER_09

Throw over to first. Jonas able to get back in time. No balls, one strike, Tommy Carroll. Here's pitch. Hits that hard back up the middle. Second baseman makes a diving attempt. Jonas is headed for third. Good piece of running by Jonas. Absolute He did not even hesitate. He was gone. Crusaders runners at first and third. They lead this one one to nothing. There's no outs. That'll bring Dylan Knapp to the plate.

SPEAKER_04

Number 22, Dylan Knapp.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I don't think the center fielder. He came in there like there's no way he's going to go for third. And Jonas just kept going.

SPEAKER_09

Jonas' got some good speed.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he does.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski checks Tommy over at first, throws over. Tommy able to get back.

SPEAKER_06

And Dylan Knapp still swinging a hot bat. He's he's hitting right, I think 3-0-1, Mike, um, on the season right now. After just uh, you know, had a tough start to the season and just got hot.

SPEAKER_09

Here's a pitch. Carroll goes. Throw down to second, not in time. Jonas trying to score. He does. Delayed double steal there.

SPEAKER_06

Well played. West actually played that well. Lane threw that ball down. Shortstop was in perfect position to cut it off and throw home, but he just couldn't get it out of his glove.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, throw throws a little high and wide. Went back to the backstop. That allowed Tommy Carroll to head over to third base. So two runs in for the Crusaders. They lead this one two to nothing. And Dillon nap at the plate. No balls, one strike to count on Dillon. Markowski checks runner at third. Pitch way outside for ball one.

SPEAKER_06

One ball, one strike. Yeah, I love it, Mike. Situation baseball. That's what I was talking about. What are our tendencies? What are things that we can do to make other teams have to anticipate our moves?

SPEAKER_09

Pitch fouled off by Dillon into the net. One ball, two strikes. Nathan Gas went due up next.

SPEAKER_06

Gotta say a shout out to my sister Barb and her husband Cliff. Their 50th anniversary coming up.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch fouled off. Count remains one ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

And my sister Mary Claire from Cincinnati. She came in. We got a wedding this week, and they're sitting right in here in the front row watching some Healing Baseball.

SPEAKER_09

So here's the pitch. 50 years. I thought it was an accomplishment for my wife and I last week to be at 40, and we're not even close to them.

SPEAKER_06

Isn't that awesome? 40 years. That's awesome. Congrats, my man. Congrats.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski checks the runner at third and deals that pitch high. Full count on Dylan Knapp.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Markowski's really struggling with his curveball right now. He's having trouble getting that thing to break.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. That pitch is high for ball four. First and third for the Crusaders. Two runs across already in the inning. They lead two to nothing. Nathan Gasswint will step in.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we don't even have an ouch here yet, Mike.

SPEAKER_04

I mean Nathan Gassman.

SPEAKER_06

And this is again anticipation. What are we going to do? We got first and third. You've got some serious speed on first base and good speed on third.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see another delayed double steal or straight double steal. Throw over to first, not in time.

SPEAKER_06

And one thing about Markowski right now, not getting being able to get that curveball across, is he's got to rely on that fastball. We're going to just start sitting back and just start teeing off.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski checks the runners. Wind up in the pitch. Outside corner for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Kevin McGregor, the home plate umpire. I mean he looks like he's got his zone right off the bat. That was a good pitch on the outside corner. He called a great game last week. I anticipate another one tonight.

SPEAKER_09

Delivered by Markowski. That hit out between right and center. Dylan on his way to third. Tommy Carroll will score from third base. That makes a score three to nothing.

SPEAKER_06

That's just good. Inside out hit. And folks, if you got a chance to see that on game time on live. One thing that Nathan Gaswin does as good as anybody is he has great inside out, keeps his weight back, drives the fist through first with the barrel following it, takes it to right field.

SPEAKER_09

Rodriguez will step in. No outs for the Crusaders. Here's the pitch. Outside corner for strike one. No balls, one strike. Moravic do up next. Gas went at first, Dillon at third. Here's the pitch. Outside. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Moravik. Really. Really struggling here a little bit. Uncharacteristic of what we saw the first time.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch outside. Two balls, one strike. Check on the runner at first. Wind up and the pitch. That bounces in there. Ball three, three balls, one strike to Rodriguez.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I think we're gonna see a lot more of Rodriguez in the lineup as well. You know, trying to find people that can take Shaner's place as far as hitting. Here's the pitch. Nice cut. Pitch fouled back.

SPEAKER_09

Brings account full.

SPEAKER_06

One thing they're trying to do with Rodriguez is he has a tendency to dip a little bit. And if you noticed on that swing, he dips that right shoulder. They're trying to get him to drive that ball a little more. Be a little more aggressive.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski deals. There you go. Pitch fouled right back at John and I. Thankfully, there's a net, and John didn't have to save my life. Again. Count remains full. Moravic awaiting his turn in the on-deck circle.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, what a beautiful day for baseball. We're in almost in July, Mike. We're 75 degree weather.

SPEAKER_09

Perfect. Rodriguez pops that up. Third baseman starts over toward it. Stops. Ball falls harmlessly to the ground.

SPEAKER_06

You got to find the fence. You got to find the fence. Somebody's got to be telling the third baseman where the fence is, and that's a catchable ball.

SPEAKER_09

Got a message from Kathy LaFaver. They're listening out in Phoenix. Hopefully they're having a great time. And some good things are happening for Caleb while he's out there.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we really wish them just the absolute best. Just a great family.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, way outside for strike three. That's all I can say on that one. Out number one. That'll bring Moravic to the plate. Runner still at first and third with one out. Healens push three across here in the inning. And they lead three to nothing.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Rodriguez is going to go right back out there. He's going to want that same pitch when he's out there, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the first pitch. Bounces in there for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

I'm going to have to ask Lane. I, you know, are you taking the umpire out for supper after the game to get that outside strike?

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, no strikes. Chase Beck awaiting his turn. Markowski deals. Gas went goes. It's alright. That ball popped out, popped out into left field. Left fielder gets under it. Yeah, you're not going to get Dylan. Dillon scores from third to make it four to nothing.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, great job by Moravik. Did his job. Got the ball up in the air, out into the outfield. You got, you know, Dylan Knapp with the wheels that he has at third base. There's no way you're going to get him. Perfect sacrifice.

SPEAKER_09

Chase Beck steps in. He's the eighth batter to come to the plate for healing here in the bottom of the first. They lead four to nothing. Two outs. Gas went on first base.

SPEAKER_06

I'd like to see Chase get in there going again. He went through that period, Mike, where he just got hot.

SPEAKER_09

Pops that first pitch up. First baseman.

SPEAKER_06

Oh.

SPEAKER_09

Somehow the first baseman was able to settle under that. He's dancing around looking for somebody to help him.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

That's the third out. Healing able to push four runs across in the bottom of the first. We will go to the top of the second. Crusaders lead four to nothing. We'll catch you back here in 60 seconds.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

As we head to the top of the second inning, Crusaders lead four to nothing. West will send Benton Coyle, Nate Vall, and Colton Cherkis to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Colton Shirkis, uh a new DH for West High School, uh, had a chance to talk to Coach Neiman before the game, and it's a kid that uh they feel has just earned this the right to move into this position from how he's been playing with the JV team team, and then uh then Coyle, uh an eighth grader, just a solid eighth grader that's just uh really been making some progress and and has kind of moved up uh into the lineup for West High School.

SPEAKER_09

Rodriguez looks in, starts his wind up, and here's the pitch. Got to make that down to first base.

SPEAKER_06

There you go. Good job.

SPEAKER_09

Unassisted down at first base for out number one. And that will bring Nate Fall to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Moravic, just a jack of all trades, isn't he? Can just do a little bit of everything. He plays first base. Um reliever. It plays outfield.

SPEAKER_09

Haven't seen him in a week. It looks like he's grown eight inches.

SPEAKER_06

He's gonna be a good looking ball player.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the first pitch to Vall. That hits him. That's the second hit batter of the game for A-Rod.

SPEAKER_06

It's one thing we've definitely perfected throughout the summer here, Mike, is uh I'd love to know if we lead the state and hit batters.

SPEAKER_09

Uh we've we've got to be pretty close, I'm telling you. It's uh number of the case. If you if there's one thing you can predict, it's every game we're gonna hit at least one.

SPEAKER_06

Oh man. I like it. They're gonna do a little small ball, maybe? No, good hit and run.

SPEAKER_09

Shirk of squares if he's gonna bunt. Lined out to Gasland out in right field for out number two.

SPEAKER_06

Great job by Gaslin playing in, um, anticipating that if he does go uh to right field, it's gonna be shallow. Normally that's a base hit.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Braxton Wolf to the plate, and we'd be back to the top of the order with Markowski should Wolf get on. First pitch in there for a ball, one ball, no strikes. A-rod comes set. There's the pitch. Outside, ball two, two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he's got himself in a little bit of a hole here. Two outs, no, he's gotta work hard, come back.

SPEAKER_09

Hit foul down the third baseline. Two balls, one strike. Runner at first, Nate Vall. Two outs for the Wolverines here in the top of the second. Crusaders lead four to nothing.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, nice solid outside corner pitch. Yeah, Peyton's gonna work that outside corner. Beautiful.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch popped up out of play. Two balls, two strikes. Runner at first, two outs. Yeah, outfielders are playing shallow.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I was just gonna say Peyton go back on that outside card.

SPEAKER_09

There's a pitch. Hit out to JJ at short. Over to second for out number three. That will retire the side for the Wolverines in the top of the second inning. Crusaders lead four to nothing. We'll be back in 60.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Heading to the bottom of the second, Crusaders lead four to nothing. They will send Cal Geeesey, JJ Hope, and Peyton Erickson to the plate. For those of you who are interested, Caleb out in Arizona. His day consisted of interviews and medical testing. He'll throw a bullpen session tomorrow and do some more testing and some more interviews. So far, everything's going well for him out there.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's just absolut that's awesome. That's just absolutely awesome.

unknown

How bad?

SPEAKER_09

It's probably it's gotta be cooler here than it is out there for those guys.

SPEAKER_06

Oh man, it it's this is just perfect baseball weather today. I mean and the field looks great. I can't say it enough, folks. Get out here, come out and watch a ball game today.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch to Geecey. High for ball one, one ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, this is just, I mean, this if you're gonna watch a game, I mean, uh if you can't get in baseball mood with the way this field looks, uh it I don't know, I don't know what to say. It just looks gorgeous.

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, no strikes. Cal batting a thousand on the season so far. He's got to be leading the state with that one. Here's pitch. That pitch in there for strike one, two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

You know, we used to talk about it with Dylan Knapp Mike about the using having that speed at the bottom of the lineup, and you don't it's the same thing with Cal.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch in there for strike two, two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, if we can somehow get Cal on base, I mean, uh he you know, he's got he's got the wheels to get the third in a hurry.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski shakes off the first sign. The second one, the third one, fourth one? Now he steps off.

SPEAKER_06

Cal steps out. Got to give a shout out to his grandpa, uh Jim Wharton, whose press box we just happen to be sitting in, the Jim Wharton press press box.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch outside brings the count full. Three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

I should say a shout-out to both of them.

SPEAKER_09

Full count on Cal. JJ Hope, do up next. Here's a pitch. Struck out looking for out number one.

SPEAKER_06

Well, that's a pretty outside pitch, but he's getting he's calling it tonight, so he's got to be swinging.

SPEAKER_09

Yep. That'll bring JJ to the plate. He tripled his first time up and scored a run.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Monroe and Markowski's a good enough pitcher to recognize that. If he's gonna get the pitch, he's gonna keep throwing it over there. And Monroe's a good enough catcher uh to frame that thing out there.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by Markowski outside for strike one.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he Markowski sees it. Yeah, he's gonna just keep going out there, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the windup in the pitch. That pitch bounces in there for ball one. One ball, one strike. Peyton Erickson do up next. We're in the bottom of the second. Crusaders lead four to nothing. Markowski deals. JJ fouls that off out of play down the first baseline. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, JJ does a great job keeping his weight back. Uh he and Gaswin, um, Dylan Knapp, they all just do a really good job of inside out hitting to the to the right side of the field. And that's exactly where he was trying to go.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by Markowski. Outside, two balls, two strikes. Markowski's ready. He delivers. JJ hits that out. Center field. Center fielder backs up, makes the play for out number two. That will bring Peyton Erickson to the plate. Peyton walked his first time up and scored a run.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, the guy's got to come up to the plate with a little different attitude now. Um home plate umpires have been calling that that outside, well, he's generous outside corner. Another one outside for strike one. And uh, I mean, but it's consistent. So they're gonna have to come to the plate, move in a little bit.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch gets away from the catcher. One ball, one strike. Tommy Carroll do up next.

SPEAKER_06

It's gonna move in a little bit, maybe take a half a step or maybe a few inches closer to the plate. Because Markowski's a smart enough pitcher that he knows if he's gonna get that pitch, he's just gonna keep going there.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski delivers. Outside for ball two, two balls, one strike. Make sure you're listening uh between games. We'll have a pre-taped interview with uh someone from the headed board that will talk about the new fields and what what the future holds for headed baseball.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that'll be interesting. I mean, it's sad to see those fields. High fly ball.

SPEAKER_09

Peyton hits that out to center field, center fielder under it for out number three. That'll retire the Crusaders in the bottom of the second inning. Three up, three down. We'll head to the top of the third. Crusaders lead four to nothing. We'll be back in one minute.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusaders courts on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Everybody, welcome back. We're heading to the top of the third Crusaders lead four to nothing. West will send Markowski, Monroe, and Frazy to the plate. That's the top of their order.

SPEAKER_06

Let's give us a little bit of time here to acknowledge some of our underwriters and sponsors for Bishop Healing Baseball and Catholic Radio. Thank you for sponsoring Bishop Healing Baseball and Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski steps in to face Arod here in the top of the third. Here's the windup in the pitch. Hit out to JJ at short, fields it, throws over to first for out number one. I always want to wait to make sure it happens, but it's pretty dead on that JJ makes the play. He's going to get them at first base. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. You know, he's the one thing that JJ's been working on, and you can tell, is is the you know, his arm strength. Um probably still accustomed to to making that throw from second, so you don't have to put as much mustard on it. First pitch to Monroe in there for ball one. One ball, no strikes. But he's really done a good job of of picking that up as the season's gone long. Wind up in the pitch. High for ball two. Two balls, no strikes. I think Monroe's got the only hit of the day. I'm assuming they gave that a hit.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he's I've got him down for a single. That pitch was inside for strike one. Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

That's a good job, Peyton, recognizing that Monroe's on top of the plate, coming back on the inside corner. Gonna do it again.

SPEAKER_09

And the pitch. That pitch high for ball three. Three balls, one strike. Frazy is due up next. Wind up by A-rod in the pitch. That pitch hit foul out of play down the first baseline. That'll bring the count full. Three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

He went inside, inside, outside, and Monroe's right up on the plate. And Peyton come right back. Come right back on that. Yep, it's gonna go right on that inside corner, right at the fist.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch outside for ball four. Monroe walks on base for the second time today, and that'll bring Frazy to the plate.

unknown

Number nine, Allen.

SPEAKER_09

Washburn do up next. Hey Rod, taking a long look here. He comes set, and here's the first pitch. Outside ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Not a bad looking curve ball by Rodriguez. Southside corner. Just kind of broke a little bit early, so came across plate low.

SPEAKER_09

Checks the runner at first and deals to the plate. In there for strike one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Got Monroe over there with good wheels. Got good situation baseball here. Force out at second. Here's the pitch. There we go.

SPEAKER_09

Bounced out to JJ. It's short. Only has one play over to first. 6-3 for out number two. And Monroe will advance to second. And that will bring Washburn to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, good play by JJ. Recognizing he didn't have play at second. Just taking taking what uh what West gave him and got the out at first base.

SPEAKER_09

Washburn steps in from the left side. He struck out looking his first time up. Arod checks a runner at second. That pitch in there high for ball one. One ball, no strikes. Should he extend the inning, Caden Barker would be due up next. Here's the pitch. In there for strike one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

A good comeback pitch on the inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

A Rod likes to take his time between pitches here. Long look in, checks back at second and delivers to the plate. That ball hit between short and third. Tommy Carroll fields it out in left field. That will put runners at first and third. Washburn on with the single. Two outs. Caden Barker steps in.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, good piece of hitting by Washburn. Very patient, kept his weight back, took that ball to the left field, went with the pitch on the outside corner and slapped it through. And Monroe couldn't didn't have a chance to score. Kind of had to wait. See if that ball was going to get through or not. And with the shallow as we're playing, I mean, I there's no way he'd have been going. He'd have been dead on arrival at home plate.

SPEAKER_09

And that hits him. That is the third hit batsman of the game. And that will load the bases for West. And that will bring up Benton Coyle, who grounded out unassisted to the first baseman his last time up.

SPEAKER_06

You know what happens there, uh Mike, is a lot of times when guys are trying to come on that inside corner, especially at the high school level, I mean, it's hard to block out that there's a guy sitting in that box that close, but that's that's what they want. They want that inside corner. And Rodriguez maybe trying to over aim, and that's that's probably why he's plucking those guys on the inside. I mean, it's tough, but you got to keep doing it. You got to keep coming on the inside corner. You can't be intimidated when the batter steps close to the plate.

SPEAKER_09

Crusaders up to 44 hit batsmen here on this season.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. And here we go. You have bases loaded. Let's see what Rodriguez can do. First pitch is high for ball one. One ball, no strikes. Yeah, Coach Wesselman went out there and tried to settle them down a little bit. Take a deep breath. Let's get out of this inning.

SPEAKER_09

Crusaders lead four to nothing here in the top of the third. That ball grounded right back to A-rod at pitcher. Out pitcher to first for out number three. West loads of bases, unable to push any runs across. We'll go to the bottom of the third inning. Crusaders lead four to nothing. We'll see you back here in 60 seconds.

unknown

Number eight, Tommy Carroll.

SPEAKER_09

Tommy Carroll steps in. He singled his last time up, drove in a run, and scored a run.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Tommy's Mr. Consistency.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch, first pitch way outside for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Been hitting right around 300 the whole season. Um hasn't gone up or down too much. Been anywhere from 295, which he's at right now, to 310 roughly.

SPEAKER_09

Wind up by Markowski. That pitch just low for ball two. Two balls, no strikes. Low and outside for ball three. Three balls, no strikes. Dylan Knapp awaiting his turn.

SPEAKER_06

Like to see Tommy get hot like he did on his birthday. I mean, that's about as good as a hitting day as I've seen.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch or third, that pitch in there for strike one. Three balls, one strike. And the pitch. Wow. Outside for strike two. That'll bring the count full. Here's the pitch. Bounces in there for ball four. Tommy draws the walk. That'll bring Dylan Knapp to the plate. He'll be followed by Nathan Gaswent.

SPEAKER_06

Alan, when I say he's given the outside corner, he's given the outside corner. And uh, I mean the guys are gonna have to come up thinking about that, Mike. Gonna have to adjust.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, just so people don't think I'm crazy. When I say it's outside for strike one, it's outside for strike one. Markowski checks, throws over to first. Tommy able to get back in plenty of time.

SPEAKER_06

Well, the main thing is good hitters adjust. I mean, you have to adjust to the strike zone. And, you know, we got some good hitters on the team. They're just gonna have to adjust. Markowski checks.

SPEAKER_09

Just missed it. That ball fouled down the third baseline for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Opportunity here, no outs. Got some decent speed on first, got good speed at the plate. Dylan's checking down that third baseline.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski deals. Pitch high for ball one. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, uh Monroe's a good catcher, and he recognizes that outside corner, and he's he's going for it.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch high. Two balls, one strike. Tommy Carroll down at first base. No outs for the Crusaders here in the bottom of the third. They lead four to nothing.

SPEAKER_06

Pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Dillon hits that one. Center fielder fooled us all. I didn't think he was going to catch that.

SPEAKER_06

I think he was trying to deke uh Carroll into tagging from first or to make him believe like he didn't have it.

SPEAKER_09

Well, it's a good thing I wasn't on first base because I'd have been down at second. Gaswent will step in. He singled his last time up. Drove in a run.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, really good piece of hit in his first at bat.

SPEAKER_09

Throw over to first. Tommy able to get back in plenty of time. Alex Rodriguez due up next. Here's the pitch. High, ball one, one ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, the difference between the first inning and the third inning, Mike, is that Markowski's recognizing that he's getting that outside pitch. There you go.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan hits that under the third baseman's glove. That'll put runners at first and second with one out.

SPEAKER_06

Another single by Nathan. Yeah, right when you think you can you can figure Nathan out going right field, right field so consistent he turns on one. That's just a nice piece of hitting.

unknown

Number four.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Alex Rodriguez to the plate. Chance to help his cause here with the runner at second base. A Rod struck out looking his first time up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I'd like to see A-Rod just get a little closer to the plate.

SPEAKER_09

Here's first pitch. He squares. That pitch outside for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Now he's squaring again.

SPEAKER_09

Squares again. Nice. Beautiful button out to the pitcher. That'll advance the runners to second and third with two outs.

SPEAKER_06

You know, I love that. That small ball, Mike. We talk about it. And I, and you know my opinion on Bunning. I I I love it. You know, we've got two guys now in scoring position, two outs, and you got a good hitter at the at the plate with Mason Moravic. Opportunity to knock two in here.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, Mason steps in from the left side. First pitch. Curves in there for strike one. No balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

That's the first good curve ball I've seen Markowski throw. I mean, he has not been able to get control of that thing, and that was a beautiful curveball by Markowski.

SPEAKER_09

Chase back in the on deck circle awaiting his opportunity.

SPEAKER_06

And this is what we're talking about, Mike. Guys stepping up. Next guy up. Who wants to solidify that position? That pitch way outside for ball one. One ball, one strike. You know, you want to become that that everyday player, and and Mason's got an opportunity.

SPEAKER_09

It's gonna be trouble. Hit out to the shortstop. Mason run scoop. Just able to get him at first base for out number three. That will retire the Crusaders. They get runners in scoring position, unable to push anybody across. Head to the top of the fourth. Crusaders four. West zero. We'll be back in 60.

You're listening to FM 88.1 KFHC Hunkosou City and K O I A, Storm Lake, Sioux Land Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic Radio Station.

SPEAKER_07

This is Tim Swedeen, and that was an exciting first game between our.

SPEAKER_09

Nate Vall on first base with the single. That'll bring Colton Cherkis to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, just left that ball a little high in the zone. Didn't quite get it inside like Peyton was looking for, and he turned on it.

SPEAKER_04

Number 10. Colton Cherkis.

SPEAKER_06

Coach Felt, you know, he's earned it.

SPEAKER_09

Squares the bunt, pulls back, swings that first pitch. No balls, one strike. He flew out to Gaswent right field his first time up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he had a nice nice nice strike on the ball and took that thing to right field. And Gas went just plain and perfect.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, that's a nice curve ball.

SPEAKER_09

Just missed. One ball, one strike. Braxton Wolf is due up next.

SPEAKER_06

Ball out there dancing around a little off first base. Yeah, you gotta manufacture a double play ball here. Keep that ball low in the zone.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_06

Just like that.

SPEAKER_09

Hit right back up the middle.

SPEAKER_06

Nice piece of hitting by Shirkus.

SPEAKER_09

Keesey unable to get to it. That'll put runners at first and second with no outs.

SPEAKER_06

Here we go, boys. Okay. We got uh first and second for West. Um we've got to force out any base. This is a chance for them to get back into the ball game. It's a chance for us to, you know, to make a play and keep them from scoring. So number six anticipation baseball. Let's see if Coach Neiman manufactures some small ball here, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Wolf steps in. He grounded out short to second his first time up. Yeah, that's he squares. Pops that out to A-rod at Pitcher's Mound, and he's able to turn and throw the ball out at second for a double play.

SPEAKER_06

Folks, that's a beautiful job of playing your position. Uh Rodriguez jumped off the plate there, was able to make that catch and double him up back at second. And that's how you get yourself out of a jam right there, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Absolutely. That'll bring the top of the order up. Peyton Markowski steps in. Runner at first base, two out for the Wolverines here in the top of the fourth. First pitch in there for a strike.

SPEAKER_06

I like what Coach Neiman did there. I mean, you got hit guy in first and second, bunting him down, trying to get him to second and third. Scoring position. Uh just a great job by Rodriguez feeling his position. Jerkers with a pretty sizable lead out there.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch in there for strike two. No balls, two strikes. Line Monroe would be due up next. Shout out to Andrew over in Lincoln listening to some Crusader baseball. A Rod looks in, deals to the plate. Pitch fouled off down the third baseline. Count remains. No balls, two strikes. Unofficially, I've got A-Rod at 41 pitches.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he's kept his numbers fairly fairly low. He had one good inning where he he was under 10, I think, and then been right around 15 after that.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski steps out. Now he steps back in. And Markowski just a tough out. Get things started again. Flew out to left field and grounded short to first is two times up. He hits that Geecy at second. Over to first for out number three. That will retire the Wolverines here in the top of the fourth. We'll go to the bottom of the fourth. Crusaders lead four to nothing. Catch you back here in 60.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

The two guys up in the press box.

SPEAKER_06

Good-looking guys up in the press box, right?

SPEAKER_09

Absolutely. Healenson's chase back. Cal Geese in the top of the order. JJ Hope to the plate here in the bottom of the fourth. They lead four to nothing.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we need to get something going here again. I mean, we scored four runs in the first inning, Mike. And I'd like to see us stay on him. First pitch in there for strike one. No balls, one strike. But the difference between that first inning and now, and this is what I was trying to get to, is that Markowski recognizes he's getting that outside corner. Oh, like that. And believe me when I say that. This is a half foot out, but you got to go up with that aggressive attitude.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, I don't even know if you can call that the corner, and that that forces batters to swing at pitches, they're not used to swinging at. Chase grounds out pitcher to first for out number one. That'll bring Cal Gesey to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

But Markowski's a good enough athlete, Mike, going back to it. He's a good enough athlete to recognize that and just says, you know what? I mean, if I'm going to get this, I'm going to take it.

SPEAKER_09

Absolutely. That'll bring Cal Geecey to the plate. He struck out looking his first time up. Here's first pitch to Cal. Outside ball one.

SPEAKER_06

One ball, no strikes. Yeah, Markowski really wanted that one. A little curveball on the outside. Had a little dip to it.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski deals. And that's outside for strike one. One ball, one strike. Here's the pitch. Way outside. Ball two. Two balls, one strike. JJ Hope, do up next.

SPEAKER_06

I I know that during batting pressure you work on this and try to work for a good eye, but you, as a and as a coach, you've got to start telling your players you've got to take a step in. You've got to take a step in toward the plate and position yourself and deal with that outside corner pitch because Markowski's going to keep throwing it there. And we have to start swinging at it.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, we're going to have to do that. That brings that last pitch was a ball, brings count. Three balls, one strike. Here's the pitch to Cal. Swing and a miss, strike two. Full count. JJ Hope is due up next.

SPEAKER_06

Nice cut by Cal. Nice aggressive swing.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Pops that foul out of play. The count remains. Three balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

I wouldn't rule out a two-strike bunt by Cal down the third base. Linework. Third baseman's playing him really deep. You know what? Why not? I've seen it done many a times. And with his speed.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski working quickly here. Here's the pitch. Cal hits that nice ball. Nice piece of hitting there for Cal. Singles between first and second base. So we've got Geeesey on first base with one out, and that'll bring JJ Hope to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he's first player to move up toward the plate. And he knew he had already called twice on that. And he took that pitch right to right field. Great piece of hitting by Cal Gesey.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he said, fool me once.

SPEAKER_06

Shame on me. Yeah. He wasn't going to get fooled that second time. And now you got speed on first with speed at the plate.

SPEAKER_09

Here's first pitch. First pitch to JJ outside for strike one. Hopefully our umpire doesn't come up and ask us if he did a good job tonight. Have to go to confession after that conversation.

SPEAKER_06

He's doing a good job. He's doing a good job. He's consistent out there. It's just uh he's decided he's gonna give that outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

That's how we'll word it. We'll say you were consistent.

SPEAKER_06

Kevin's a good guy, and he's a good umpire, so I don't want to be too hard on him.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, he's he's done a great job all season long.

SPEAKER_06

Cal goes. Nice piece of hit, and now gotta get back. Oh, it's down.

SPEAKER_09

Mid ball drops in front of the left fielder.

SPEAKER_06

Great job by Cal. Cal stopped, recognized that didn't know if it was going to be caught.

SPEAKER_09

And uh Cal batting.

unknown

The catcher.

SPEAKER_09

His last time up.

SPEAKER_06

So that triple in the first inning, Mike, that's caused that right fielder because he he booted or uh because JJ hit it past him, he was playing really deep. That's how he got that thing to drop in front.

SPEAKER_09

Runners at first and second. Pitch high for ball one, one ball, no strikes. Tommy Carroll is due up next.

SPEAKER_06

I'd like to see uh Peyton just get a nice little gapper here.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, that was about off the shortstops, glove. Tough play there for the shortstop.

SPEAKER_06

That'll load the bases. That took a really weird bounce on field turf, which is unusual, but that took an odd bounce.

SPEAKER_09

We will have Jonas Jensen going into courtesy run for Peyton. So we've got the bases loaded. We've got a lot of speed on the bases out there. A ton of speed. One out, and that will bring Tommy Carroll to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I mean, if Carroll puts anything in the gap, we're scoring three runs. I mean, we got some good good wheels on play on the base.

SPEAKER_09

Carroll singled his first time up, scored a run, and he also walked his last time. That first pitch, Tommy up high for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

A chance to break this thing wide open, Mike. Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Outside corner for strike one. One ball, one strike. Markowski checks the runner at third and he deals. That ball hit well out to right field. It's deep enough. That will score one. Absolutely. Cal Gesey scores from third base. Crusaders lead this one five to nothing. JJ takes third. And Peyton, I'm sorry, Jonas stays at first. We've got runners at first and third with two outs.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, and that ball was hit just deep enough. I mean, you're not going to get Cal at home anyway from where that where he caught that ball. But with speed on second base, I mean JJ was able to get over to third. Wasn't even a play.

SPEAKER_09

Dylan Naple step in. Throw over to first. Jonas back in plenty of time. Dylan scored a run today and he flew out to center field.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I'd like to see us manufacturer run here with two outs.

SPEAKER_09

There's the pitch. In there for strike one. No balls, one strike. Gaswent would be due up next. Markowski checks the runner at first, checks runner at third, delivers. Jonas goes. And he's thrown out at second base.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, good good throw by Monroe.

SPEAKER_09

She retired the side. After four, Crusaders 5, West Zero. We'll be back in 60 seconds.

SPEAKER_07

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

West will send number two, three, and four to the plate, Lane Monroe, Colin Frazy, and Caleb Washburn. Like to give a shout out to Eric Blum, who I know listens a lot and always has great advice for John and I as to what he enjoys and what we can do better at. So thanks for all that help.

SPEAKER_06

I hope he doesn't say the word everything. I think he does. Does he? Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Sometimes he says you guys are really good at everything, and other times he's like, you guys are good at some things. Has yet to say we could improve on everything. So as long as we have the seal of approval from Mr. Blum, I'm going to be satisfied. Monroe steps in. He has singled and walked his two times up tonight.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, this is a big inning for Rodriguez, 2-3-4. This is the group that jammed up the bases last time.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch in there was ball one. Here's pitch number two, swing and a miss. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Going to that last play with Jonas. Monroe has just the throw was actually a little high, but his release is extremely quick. Got that ball down there in a hurry.

SPEAKER_09

Rodriguez delivers. Pitch is high. Two balls, one strike. Frazi is due up next. Frazi hit by pitch and reached on a fielder's choice. Here's the pitch. Inside. Three balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Rodriguez's got to work his way back in. You know, just play catch with Peyton. Peyton's setting up on that outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch by A-Rod. Low for ball four. Monroe draws the leadoff walk, and that will bring up Frazy. He'll be followed by Washburn.

SPEAKER_04

Number nine.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Rodriguez got to manufacture a ground ball here somehow. Gotta force out a second base, like to see a double play ball.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch on that outside corner for strike one. No balls, one strike. Crusaders lead this one in the top of the fifth, five to nothing. Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss, strike two, no balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Peyton coming back, fist high, outside corner. Yeah, beautiful call by Peyton.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch. Bounces in there and gets away from Peyton. Monroe will take second base on the wild pitch. Brings the count. One ball, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, the ball just got away from uh Peyton. Kinda kind of shorthopped it from Rodriguez in front of the plate. Checks the runner in second, delivers. Yeah, something something's going on, and Peyton didn't look happy when he caught that ball. Uh he's going out and talking to Rodriguez and I'm not so sure he didn't cross him up again, Mike. That's a good job by Peyton to go out and just settle my picture down. Just say, uh let's see what color my my fingernails are here today. You should be able to see the signals.

SPEAKER_09

Looks like they're bright pink for those of you who may or may not be wondering. Rodriguez checks the runner at second base. He delivers. Washburn is due up next. Long look in by Rodriguez. Checks runner at second base. Here's the pitch to the plate. Mind to Cal Geese at second. He catches it, throws over to second base for the double play. Beautiful play by Ghisi.

SPEAKER_06

Boy Arod's uh gotten himself uh, this is that's the third, this is the third time he's gotten himself out of a jam with a fly ball back to the base. Double play.

SPEAKER_09

I think what he does, he goes in the dugout and says, Coaches, I'm gonna get in the bind. Don't worry about it, and I'm gonna get out of it.

SPEAKER_06

I got it.

SPEAKER_09

That'll bring Washburn to the plate here. Two outs.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, nice try. That's a tough one.

SPEAKER_09

Hard hit right off Cal Geecey's glove out there, made a really great effort to make that play. That'll put Washburn at first base with two outs.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Washburn's hit the ball hard tonight. A shout out to his grandpa, uh Ron Washburn. Ron Bone Bone Washburn. Play with him with the Sioux City Saints back in the day.

SPEAKER_09

He grounded out unassisted to the third baseman his first time up and was hit by a pitch his last time up. He'll step in to face Rodriguez. Rodriguez to the plate. First pitch, ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, nice curveball by Rodriguez. Just missed. A little bit up in the zone. But uh like seeing him throwing that thing.

SPEAKER_09

Hey, Rod comes set, good deals. High for ball two, two balls, no strikes. Benton Coyle would be due up next.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he's starting to show a few signs of getting tired a little bit. Uh he's been high in the zone. And and normally when you're high in the zone. Pitch inside corner for strike one.

SPEAKER_09

Two balls, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

You start showing a little fatigue. Getting a little lazy on your release point with uh with the fastball. That one there, he zoomed right back in inside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Pitch just high for ball three. Three balls, one strike. Washburn down at second base, or first base, I'm sorry. Two outs for the Wolverines here in the top of the fifth. Crusaders lead five to nothing. Here's the pitch. Bounces that one in there for ball four. That'll put runners at first and second with two outs, and that will bring Benton Coyle to the plate. He grounded out unassisted the first baseman and bunted first to pitcher to first is for the second time up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, hey Rod, he's just gotta he's just gotta relax and not worry about Washburn at second base. Washburn's not going anywhere. Um concentrate on Peyton, just play some catch.

SPEAKER_09

Delivers to the plate. There we go. Pitch in there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Yeah, he looked nice and relaxed there.

SPEAKER_06

Threw that ball outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

Two on, two out for the Wolverines. Here's the pitch. Pitch it out to Dillon in center field. For a single. That will load the bases for the Wolverines here in the top of the fifth inning. That will bring Nate ball to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, nice piece of hitting.

SPEAKER_09

Been hit by a pitch and singled his last time up.

unknown

Nate's ball.

SPEAKER_06

Nice piece of hitting by Coyle. Now you got the bases loaded here. Two outs. Let's see if Rodriguez can get himself out of another jam, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Living on the edge.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch outside for ball one. One ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, you gotta have that pitch. He's been calling that pitch all night. That curveball was right right where he's been calling it. Yeah, good job. Peyton setting up on that outside corner.

SPEAKER_09

A-rod with the pitch. That pitch is way inside. Two balls, no strikes. Base is full of Wolverines. Two outs. Trying to push some runs across here and cut into this lead that Healan has. It's five to nothing. A Rod starts his wind up, and here's the pitch. That's in there for strike one.

SPEAKER_06

Two balls, one strike. Yeah, I don't mind that, Peyton. Taking a quick throw down to first base, trying to get him leaning off.

SPEAKER_09

None of the runners are being held on with two outs here. Here's the pitch. Here we go. Drounding out to JJ. It's short. Gotta be quick. Here we go. Beautiful play by JJ. Over to first for out number three. That'll retire the Wolverines after they load the bases. Unable to push any runs across. We'll head to the bottom of the fifth. Crusaders lead five to nothing. See you in 60.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Dylan Knapp steps in here for the Crusaders. He was up to bat at the end of the last inning whenever Jonas was thrown out at second, trying to steal. First pitch to Dylan is ball one. One ball, no strikes. Dylan hits that out to right field. Right fielder comes in. Able to make the catch for out number one. And that will bring Nathan Gaswin to the plate. Nathan is singled both times up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, good uh good piece of hitting by Dylan going to right field there. Just got underneath it. Uh did everything right. Uh took the outside corner pitch to right field, but uh just missed it.

SPEAKER_09

Markowski working quickly. He deals that pitch is outside for ball one, one ball, no strikes. Alex Rodriguez would be due up next, and here's the pitch. Bounces in there, ball two, two balls, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Nathan's had a good day at the plate. Umok the last one down third baseline. Here's a pitch.

SPEAKER_09

Outside for ball one, two balls, one strike. Moves the count to two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

There we go. Nice piece of hit.

SPEAKER_09

Nathan hits that back up the middle. Shortstop has no play on it.

SPEAKER_06

Nathan, three for three on the day. Yeah. You know, and the thing about it is he sprayed it all over the field, Mike. Took the first one out into right field, second one down the third baseline, third one up the middle.

SPEAKER_09

Yep. He's uh really driving that batting average up here the last few weeks, and that'll bring Alex Rodriguez to the plate. Here's the first pitch to A Rod bounces in there for ball one, one ball, no strikes. Moravic would be due up next.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I'd like to see A-Rod jump on these first pitches. Um Tiklov step in. He's best when he's here's the pitch. There we go.

SPEAKER_09

Hits that sharply between third and short for a single. Gaslin advances down to second base. Crusaders have a little something working here in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two men on with one out, and that'll bring Moravik to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I was just gonna say Alex is so good when he jumps on those first two or three pitches. Uh, it that's when he's his best.

SPEAKER_09

Hendricks Heaton heading out to courtesy run. Vickery is gonna step in and batch for Moravic here. Two on for the Crusaders with one out. They lead five to nothing in the bottom of the fifth, looking to increase that lead. First pitch. Ball one.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I like see this coach uh said he's gonna get more aggressive with players and and and get guys in positions uh to give them an opportunity to succeed, and here here right here with Vickery, you know, he's giving them a chance. Got guys in scoring position. Um opportunity to do something.

SPEAKER_09

Jackson's got a 429 batting average on the season.

SPEAKER_06

I was just looking at that, Mike, and and uh. I mean, he hasn't had a lot of bats, but I mean he's made uh pretty good do with what he has had.

SPEAKER_09

Wind up in the pitch. Oh bounces that out to the pitcher over to third for one. Over to first for the double play. Your typical one-five-three double play, and that will retire the side for the Crusaders. They get two men on, unable to push anyone across. We'll head to the top of the sixth inning. Crusaders lead five to nothing. We'll see you back here in 60 seconds.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Thank you everybody for listening. We're headed to the top of the six. Crusaders lead this one five to nothing. West will send Colton Cherkis, Braxton Wolf, and Peyton Markowski eight, nine, and one to the plate here.

SPEAKER_06

Yep, opportunity to get some more of our sponsors in here, Mike. Um, Keller Williams real estate agent, Tammy Bertrand. Cruz Financial Group, uh, shout out to my good friend Joe Cruz, Lawler Fixtures, Liberty National Bank, Lightform, Modern Day Parish, McClintock Insurance, uh, shout out to Tim McClintock and Meyer Brothers Funeral Home. Thank you for sponsoring Bishop Healing Baseball and Catholic Radio.

SPEAKER_09

Cherkis will step in. He is flown out to right field. And singled his two times up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, a nice hit up the middle here, the last bat, his last at bat.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch in there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Here's the pitch.

SPEAKER_06

That pitch is high for ball one, one ball, one strike. Now we were talking about it in between. Alex's been living on the edge here. He's getting himself out of several jams here, but here we go. Bottom of the bottom of the top of the sixth. No runs. Uh he's throwing a shutout.

SPEAKER_09

Reaches out, just able to hit that over the leaping try for Cal Geese out there. So Cherkis reaches on a single. That'll put a runner at first base with no outs. That'll bring up Braxton Wolf. I see here, John, the NCAA adopted the five year five years to play uh five seasons. So starting with 26-27 academic year, an athlete's eligibility clock begins full-time enrollment or at the start of the academic year after his or her 19th birthday. Yeah. So that'll keep these some of these quarterbacks from being 28, 29 years old. And and I always crack up whenever they say the announcers will say, Oh, he's an excellent quarterback. Well, he's 27 years old. If he was excellent, he'd be in the NFL.

SPEAKER_06

Well, he's making more money in college. That's why they're staying back. And and I was just talking about this. Go ahead, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

Out to JJ at short. Not able to turn the double play. Great play by JJ and Cal Geecey out there, unable to turn the double play, but there is one out.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, good looking turn. But yeah, I was just talking to my daughter uh Carly uh this weekend about it. Um, of course, you know, uh it this really affects them. You know, she's uh assistant coach down there at Creighton uh for the women's basketball, and we were just talking about that, and she loves that rule. Uh it's just gonna really help college sports, I think.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, most medical and hardship waivers are gone. That first pitch in there for a strike, no balls, one strike. Yeah, I think it I think it's good for uh college athletics. They've got five years to complete five seasons. Here's the pitch outside. One ball, one strike to Markowski. He'll be followed by Lane Monroe.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, now we just got to get the wild, wild west of uh NIL back, somehow get it uh uh corralled a little bit and get it back to normal.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the pitch high. Two balls, one strike. So you mean these schools that have Lamborghini dealerships in town aren't aren't gonna be able to crazy.

SPEAKER_06

It's it's really crazy, and yeah, I know Nick Saban and that group uh are working with uh nice piece of hit.

SPEAKER_09

Hit out to Tommy Carroll in left field. He's able to get under it for out number two. Good job, Tommy, coming in and and playing that.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, uh Nick Saban and that group working with the Trump administration and trying to come up with some kind of bylaws. And I really think Nick event or Coach Saban is eventually gonna get it done. It's just gonna take a little bit and then to get the NCAA uh to buy in and and uh col you know, college athletes to buy in.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch to Monroe fouled back for strike one, no balls, one strike. Yeah, I still wonder how much longer the NCAA is gonna be around.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I mean, if they lose this deal to Sorbesi in Texas, I mean that's just perfect example. Well nice.

SPEAKER_09

Throw down to first, not able to get it.

SPEAKER_06

One ball, one strike. If they lose that situation down there and he's able to play this year, that's just a big, huge slap in the face to the NCAA, basically.

SPEAKER_09

Well, I I just saw at the break that the NFL informed him that they are not doing a supplemental draft this year, so currently he has no place to play. That ball has popped up on the infield. JJ Hope out there makes the play for out number three. That'll retire the Wolverines in the top of the sixth inning. We're gonna head to the bottom of the sixth. Crusaders lead five to nothing, and we'll catch you back here in 60 seconds.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader sports on your Catholic Radio station.

SPEAKER_09

As we head to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Crusaders lead five to nothing. They will send Chase Beck, Cal Geecey, and the top of the order, JJ Hope, to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

This is a good time for bottom of our order uh to make a little uh put a little dent in it, uh create a little damage, um start solidifying some some positions. Uh we talked about it early in the season, Mike, that we need a bottom of our order to be productive in order for us to go uh anywhere in the playoffs.

SPEAKER_04

Absolutely and pitch hitting.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, good Jonas.

unknown

Jonas Jensen.

SPEAKER_09

Jonas Jensen will step in and pinch hit for Chase Beck.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I was talking to Coach Taylor about Jonas trying to keep that head in. Uh Jonas has been kind of pulling his head in his first few at bats, kind of like Dylan Knapp was in his first few at bats.

SPEAKER_09

First pitch of Jonas was ball. Fouls that down third baseline. Unable to make the play, so it's one ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

Um has a great glove. He's got opportunity to do some just amazing things for the Bishop Healing Crusaders.

SPEAKER_09

Here's the windup and the pitch. Hits that one, foul out of play down the third baseline, brings the count. One ball, two strikes. He'll be followed by Cal Ghisi. Nope. Beckett Blatchford's out there in the on-deck circle. I'm just going to start looking out the window and see who's up. I'm 0 for 2 right now.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, coach said he was going to do it. Uh Coach Taylor said they were going to start using some players and trying to get guys some swings and some cuts.

SPEAKER_09

It's two balls, two strikes, as I affectually like to call Beckett. Uh Boog Powell will step in here after Cal is done. Or I'm sorry, after Jonas is done. Fouls that one off. Count remains two balls, two strikes.

SPEAKER_06

Good bat by Jonas. Monroe's going out there. Took one in the uh chest or something, but I'm not so sure he didn't cross Monroe up a little bit. Or it hit the umpire and and uh it got the umpire in the leg. Okay, so Monroe doing doing uh what he should be doing, going out and giving the ump a little time.

SPEAKER_09

Everybody helping out there. Catcher gave him a little time. We came out and gave him some new baseballs. That'll bring the count full. Three balls, two strikes. Beckett black. On deck. Wind up by Markowski in the pitch.

SPEAKER_06

There we go. Jonas hits that.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, lines it out to left or left field.

SPEAKER_06

That's what I like to see with Jonas. He kept his head in there. Took that outside pitch to left field. Beautiful hit. Just uh left fielder playing him perfect.

SPEAKER_09

Big Beckett Blatchford steps in here for the first time in the game. He'll be followed by JJ Hope.

SPEAKER_06

One thing for sure with Beckett, if he makes contact, it's not going to be a dribbler, Mike.

SPEAKER_09

No, it's not. Here's the pitch. Outside for ball one.

SPEAKER_06

One ball, no strikes. We like to laugh about it, but he either hits a rope down the third baseline or he pulls it down the first baseline.

SPEAKER_09

Lays off that, but it is a strike. One ball, one strike. Yeah, he's a fun kid to watch step into the batter's box. Here's the pitch. Way outside ball two. Two balls, one strike. JJ Hope is up next. One out here for the Crusaders in the bottom of the six. They lead this from five to nothing. Fouls that one into the West Hide. Dugout for strike two. Two balls, two strikes. Everybody back ready to go here. Markowski working quickly with the wind up and the pitch. Swinging a miss. Beckett's gonna take off down toward first base, got away from the catcher. That is a strikeout for out number two. That'll bring JJ Hope to the plate.

SPEAKER_06

Now let's do it with two. I mean, got the top of the order.

unknown

Number five.

SPEAKER_04

JJ Hope.

SPEAKER_06

Got good hitters. Let's get something going here in the bottom of the sixth. A little more insurance. You can't have enough.

SPEAKER_09

Our next time on the radio will be Thursday, will be from Sergeant Bluff out at their new complex. That ball hit down to the first baseman. Able to field it. And that is out number three for the Crusaders. We'll head to the top of the seventh. Crusaders lead this one five to nothing. We'll be back here in one minute.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Heading to the top of the seventh, West will send three four and five hitters to the plate. Colin Frazy, Caleb Washburn, and Caden Barker. On Thursday, we will be on the air with pregame at 5.15 with first pitch for game one at 5.30.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Looking forward to going seeing that new field down there, Mike. Sergeant Bluff.

SPEAKER_09

I'm looking forward to seeing this luxurious press box you keep taking on.

SPEAKER_06

I drove by it the other day, uh, my grandson. I I gotta give a shout-out to my grandson. Uh he hit a walk-off double so to win uh uh U9 uh little league down in Sergeant Bluff yesterday. So Elijah, great job. Lija Shikette. Um the press box is very similar to the one we're in now. So it'll be looks like it has plenty of room. Two windows, unlike this one. This one has three. Uh two windows, kind of kind of like the North High one a little bit.

SPEAKER_09

Okay. First pitch by Jonas is way, I mean, uh by A-rod, way outside for ball one, one ball, no strikes.

SPEAKER_06

There we go.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch back in there right across the plate for a strike. Yeah, let's talk about A-Rod. One ball, one strike.

SPEAKER_06

That's uh I mean, what a job he's doing tonight. I mean, he's gotten himself out of jam. He's got an opportunity to finish a complete game here.

SPEAKER_09

That pitch behind the batter for ball two, two balls, one strike. He's definitely kept it interesting.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's the one right there you can say definitely got away from him.

SPEAKER_09

He's got a five-run lead here in the top of the seventh inning looking to finish this one out. There we go.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, nothing fancy. Make him hit the ball, let our defenders uh make some plays. We got a great defense out there.

SPEAKER_09

And the wind up in the pitch. Well, he's gone way outside, strike, way behind the batter, strike, way behind the batter.

SPEAKER_06

So he's he's trying to come in on that inside corner, and I don't know if he's aiming it and he's just losing the grip, but that's two of them he's thrown over there.

SPEAKER_09

The wind up in the pitch. That is ball four. Frazy draws the walk. Yeah. Start the inning, that puts a runner at first base with no outs. Caleb Washburn steps in.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, Peyton walking out, giving him some some words of encouragement saying, you know, come on here, just throw to me. Um, let's get out of this. Washburn's a dangerous hitter.

SPEAKER_09

He is singled twice today and struck out looking. Outside corner for strike one. No balls on strike. Get ahead of him. A-Rod comes out. He delivers the plate. Great job. Moravic got it first base and able to snag that ball. Throw over to second to get the lead runner for the first out.

SPEAKER_06

And we would have had we would have had him going down to first, too, but we didn't get a guy over there fast enough. Because Moravik had to jump off and make that play. Uh Cal couldn't get around quick enough to get back to first base.

SPEAKER_09

It will be Adrian Hell. One ball on one strike.

SPEAKER_06

That was a nice catch right there. One ball to strike.

SPEAKER_09

Carol over to scoop it up. Keep the runners from advancing any farther. So we've got runners at first and second with one out. And that will bring Benton Coyle living on a prayer again, John.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I mean, this is a deja vu for Rodriguez. He's gotten himself in several jams here and uh see if he can get out of one more. I'm not so sure that they they have what do they have for hits, Mike? They might have outhit us in this game. I'll take a look here in a second.

SPEAKER_09

There we go. That grounded up. That should finish it. JJ Hope feels it, steps on the bag, throws over to first for the double play. 6-4-3. That'll retire the side and end the game for the Wolverines. Healing gets the 5-0 win. Great job by A-Rod out on the mound. Continuously got himself in a bind and was able to work his way out of it.

SPEAKER_06

And just what the doctor ordered, right, Mike? I mean, we talked about it before the game. This is a big week. Um this is exactly how you got to start that. And to get seven innings out of Alex, uh, who got himself into quite a few jams, some on his own doing, and some on just some good hitting by West. And then for him to be able to get out of it, uh says two things. A, uh what kind of an athlete and the the kid is, uh kind of a bulldog attitude out there, and then how good our defense was today. I think we manufactured four double plays with guys in scoring position today. So just a great overall job by the Crusaders. I know you're looking at the hits right now. I'm not so sure West didn't out hit us, but our hits were timely. Um we produced when we had guys in scoring position, and especially in that first inning, we jumped all over them. Gotten a little bit of a lull, got an insurance run there in the fourth, and and fin, and then just Alex just finished it out.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, they they did jump out quickly, like we talked about at the start of the game. It was important to get out and get a good start, and they did, pushing four runs across in the first inning. Uh, then, like you said, took a little bit of a lull, but added a run uh to make the final score five to nothing. And we will be back, I'm gonna say, probably in about 15 or 20 minutes, getting ready for game number two. We're gonna take a three-minute break and then be sure you listen to the interview that Tim Swadin did with uh the president of the Headed Baseball League. He's gonna talk about the new fields and and the future that that headed has to look forward to. So we'll see you back here in about 15 or 20 minutes. Thank you.

This is Tim Swedeen, and that was an exciting first game between our Healing Boys and the West High Wolverines. Please stay tuned for game two of the doubleheader. Today, I am visiting with Eric Shetler, who's president of the Headed Little League. Thank you for joining us today, Eric. Yeah, thanks for having me, Tim. Well, I know that many of these players, this year and in prior years, have ran through that headed little league, or the Pulaski Little League, or or Kirk Hansen. So it's one of those things where I understand that the youth that are developed at your level are the kids who are going to be tomorrow's players. So I do think that that's an important factor to look at.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, it is. And it's always great to see the Healing Crusaders out there playing. Uh, we do have a handful of kids here on the varsity this year that came through Headed, and it's always a great memory seeing those kids. Uh Dylan Knapp's out there. You've got the Le Favre boys, of course, as well. Uh Raiden is out there. So uh multiple kids that came through our program and brings back a lot of good memories. It's nice to see them on the field.

SPEAKER_07

So tell me what ages Headed involves. Is it T-ball through senior little league? Is that kind of what it is?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, it is. We started T Ball, which is four years old. Right. And we run that all the way through. It can go up to 16. Um Majors Little League is is really one of the most popular divisions that goes up to age 12. Okay. And then after that, you see an inter league uh intermediates league, which is 13-year-olds. After that, you get a lot of kids starting to play high school ball, and they'll you'll see them in the program here at Healing for freshmen. Yep. Because as eighth graders, they can play on that freshman team. Right. So we see a lot of kids to that age. Interesting. Interesting.

SPEAKER_07

Well, one of the things that I think is really important is making sure that the leagues are competitive. How do you go about aligning teams and putting people on teams so that the games are evenly matched from game to game?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, so part of uh part of our strategy at Headed is we try to make the teams as even as possible. Sure. Uh and we start that in the minor leagues, which is about eight years old. Um, we have an evaluation at the beginning of the year. Right. And then we try to uh even out the teams as best we can with the current talent level and um skill level with the players, and that makes for a more enjoyable league in the minors and majors divisions. You know, it's competitive games at that point where the kids are pitching and having fun. So we try to make it as uh level as we can on the skill set, and that just really makes for an enjoyable summer, you know, when they're at that development stage and trying to build up the skill set.

SPEAKER_07

So this is boys and girls, correct?

SPEAKER_08

Yes, it is. We have baseball and softball. Um, we've had quite a few softball teams here this summer, and that's going really well as well. Um, so the minor league softball teams and the major league softball teams, they do interleague with the other leagues in town. So they'll play at Pulaski against Morningside, for example, as well as the West Side teams. Very good. That's been really fun. So the softball's going well.

SPEAKER_07

Do you get I know that every dad maybe has the dream of coaching their child. Do you get enough parental involvement or maybe too much parental involvement?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, um we so we are a completely volunteer-run league. Okay. So 100% based on volunteer coaches, and um that has gone really well for us. There's certain years where we have a ton of people who want to coach, surprisingly, and sometimes we have to um limit that list or pare it down. And then there's other years where we need to reach out and ask people to coach because you you simply don't have enough volunteers.

SPEAKER_07

I get it.

SPEAKER_08

Um kind of the thing I see in the league is at the t-ball level, everyone's a little apprehensive to jump in and start coaching because they haven't done it before. But then once once coaches get in there and start to see how fun it is and how excited the kids are, once they start at that younger age level and they get into it, you get the repeat coaches. So they want to do it year after year at that point because it really is enjoyable. Um I've loved always coaching my kids and it's just a lot of fun. It's pretty rewarding.

SPEAKER_07

So is this part of the international quote unquote organization, or is Sioux City Little League all by itself?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, so in Sioux City in our district, we are part of Little League International. Okay. So at the end of the season, there's an all-star tournament, and that's part of the Little League International uh tournament. So if the 12-year-old team wins the district and goes to state and they win the state, then they'll go on to the Central Region Finals and they could go on to the Little League World Series. So yeah, it's pretty exciting.

SPEAKER_07

I know in the last seven, eight months we've had a change in that headed. We'll be having physical location being moved to a different location. Speak a little bit about that, if you would.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, so uh our current location down on Hawkeye Drive, we've been there for as long as I can remember. Um, and we're gonna be moving just a short distance to the north. Um, our new address is gonna be 3,700 Jefferson Street.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, Hallmark to go by as far as is there a business close by there that's gonna be Yeah, so it's in Leeds.

SPEAKER_08

Um it's it's would be just south of kind of the Jolly Time popcorn area. Um when you're in Leeds there, um, off of 41st Street, I think Tyler Street and 41st Street kind of become one at the tracks. Okay. Steinbeck's pub is near there, the Dollar General is right there on the corner, and it would be just to the east. There is a large field, and that's where we're gonna be located. So it's a really nice area. It's gonna be great for Leeds.

SPEAKER_07

It sounds like you have a lot of corporate contributors too. I know, I know Knife River is a huge piece of it. Who are there other corporate contributors that are becoming part of it as well?

SPEAKER_08

There are, and we're we're actually in the beginning of a capital campaign to raise money for the new park. So that's something that I've been working on, and we've got great corporate sponsors, folks who are always sponsoring teams year after year. So we couldn't, we absolutely could not do it without our corporate sponsors, and that's a huge, huge part of our program.

SPEAKER_07

Do you what do you see with the future? Do you see that the number of kids is just gonna increase because it's become more exciting to join this tour of organization?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, so the last five years, our numbers have increased, which is fantastic. Um, I think part of that is you know, at the rec league, we try we we're making it fun, we're working on development, and locally we have a lot of great parent support. So our numbers have increased. Uh, and I I do expect that to continue for the most part. You know, having the new park is exciting, and we're really looking forward to that. That should probably, you know, we're looking to open that in the summer of 2028. So that's fast approaching.

SPEAKER_07

Sounds fantastic. Eric Shetler, head of headed Little League here in Sioux City, thank you so much for joining us today.

SPEAKER_08

Great, thank you. I appreciate it, Tim.

SPEAKER_05

And now back to your Crusader Sports on your Catholic radio station.

SPEAKER_09

Welcome back, folks. We are here at Bishop Mueller Field awaiting the start of game two. If you're just joining us, the Crusaders won Game 1, 5-0 against the West High Wolverines. Alex Rodriguez was able to get the complete game victory for Healing. And we're waiting for the teams to take the field and get ready for game number two. Like I said earlier, but if you weren't with us, our next broadcast will be Thursday. We will be at Sergeant Bluff. Pregame 515. First pitch 5.30 for game number one. And then game number two will follow approximately 30 minutes after that. Then next Tuesday, the Crusaders are back at home back at home. They will face Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln. Pregame will be 3.45, and first pitch will be approximately 4 o'clock. And game number 2 will be 20 to 30 minutes after the conclusion of game number one. Then next Thursday, Crusaders travel across town. They will face the number one ranked in 4A, East High Black Raiders. Those games will be 5.30 and 7.30. So pregame for game one will be 5.15. First pitch will be around 5.30. Then on Monday, July 6th, it'll be the conclusion of the regular season for the Crusaders. They will be at home and they will be facing Council Bluffs Lewis Central. So a lot of important games coming up for the Crusaders. I believe that early next week the pairings for the state playoffs will be released. So we'll find out who Healens playing, what their tournament trail is going to look like, and whether or not they're going to be playing on the road or at home as the playoffs get started. We'll have uh a different umpire behind the plate for this game as they always switch. So uh the batters, both teams will have to learn new strike zones and and new things like that.

SPEAKER_06

Got uh stuck in the line there to get my hot dog mic, so just getting the mic on, and here we go. Try talking to my sister from Cincinnati, Mary Claire, coming up and talking. But she's a little gun shy after 58 years of being away from healing uh baseball.

SPEAKER_09

Well, you were gonna ask her some questions. She said, How am I gonna know that? That was fifty years ago. It's just like yesterday, I'm sure. So it would have been interesting to hear some of the stories that she had about the Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, all those guys, Johnny Bench, because she worked at the bank that they use. Is that correct?

SPEAKER_06

That's correct. Yeah, she used to uh they would come in. Uh she said Pete used to come through the drive-thru and Johnny would come in. Uh I think Concepcion, Davy, Concepcion bank there, and I know I want to say Jack Billingham, if you remember that name from the old 75-76 Reds. What would have been more interesting is her talking about the big red machine. And she still thinks that the 90 Reds team was better than than those big red teams. You know, and I that's for those of you that uh can go back that far, that 90 Reds team had the nasty boys on there, Bob Dibble and and that group. Um and uh they swept through the the World Series, but tough to beat that set that that group in the mid-70s for the Reds.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, that was uh That was a pretty powerful machine. That's that's why they were called the Big Red Machine, and all those names you mentioned make me think back to all the baseball cards that I had and had those and had them tucked away at home and I moved away for a bit and went back to get them and my mom said, Well, I don't didn't think you had any use for them, so I threw them all away, and now I can go to card shows and find out that uh I wouldn't have to work if she'd have held on to some of those cards for me.

SPEAKER_06

That's funny because I sold all mine to a couple buddies and you didn't even think anything about it back in those days. Uh but baseball was different, and if you go back into the mid-70s, uh the Reds were the first one they were the first team to really um do the free agency, build a team, they had a lot of guys come through the system, but then they were also able to r acquire teams from other teams, you know, just basically by paying them more. And it was kind of the beginning of that. Uh they brought in uh George Foster and uh and a couple uh a couple other guys, uh um Cesar Geronimo, a couple of these guys that filled the gap, uh Tom Seaver came in and pitched for him. Um this is back when free agency kind of just had started and these guys were bargaining their salaries and uh it just started something obviously a lot bigger than what it was back then.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, absolutely. They probably brought in Dave Parker that way too.

SPEAKER_06

They did bring in Dave Parker, uh he came from the pirates. Uh yeah. I just uh you can go on and on and and then of course if you know the the game evolved and anybody that's seen the the movie Moneyball, then then it it went into to stats. These uh these these people that were statisticians could go in and look at players and see they weren't necessarily looking at averages, they're looking at on base percentage, you know, walks, different things. I mean, and instead of paying 'em eighteen million, you know, you know what, we're gonna get rid of that guy. We're gonna bring in two or three of these guys that one gets on base sixty percent of the time, he steals, and matter of fact, uh, you know, it just changed the game. And and that that was the Oakland A's, I think, that started that.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, old uh Chuck Finley. Yeah. And the the swinging A's, but yeah, that uh as a kid I was a huge Dave Parker fan and huge Pirates fan, so when he left that was that was a heartbreaker for me to especially to see him go to the Reds.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I think we just lost him recently, didn't we? Didn't he just pass away recently? I believe I believe you're correct. I believe he did.

SPEAKER_09

Nothing. I just they they we had the break, uh the interview with uh president of the head of the little league board. Yeah. Took another two minute break and I got my headset on and it was time to go.

SPEAKER_06

Here we go. And and so I was as I was down there, I was talking, and and we might see a little hodgepodge of pitching for the Crusaders here in the second game. I think we're gonna see Mason Moravik. I got to look at the lineup here, Mike, but is Mason is he starting the game?

SPEAKER_09

Let's see. Vickery is starting.

SPEAKER_06

So Vickery's gonna start the game, yeah. And and we might see Gaswin. Um got a chance to talk to a couple of the ball players while I was waiting in line there. Uh you know, they're pretty excited um about the first game. Uh they know they missed some opportunities, and they and and let's not make any bones about it. But the West guys were a little disappointed in their base running. Several of them were talking uh about how, yeah, we gotta clean up our our base running, we gotta clean up uh our pitching with guys on base, uh stuff like that. So we're gonna see we're gonna see a lot of that here in the second game. Frazy will be throwing for West High School. Um he did a good job against us for a little while when we played over there, so a familiar face, and these guys have seen him. Hopefully, we can jump on him just like we did in the first game.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, absolutely. As we're getting ready, let me give you the lineups and
