Yeah, what a what a beautiful facility, Mike. We're uh this is the first chance that either one of us have had uh to look at it. Um I can't wait. I mean, I can't wait. This is uh exciting baseball. We talked earlier in the week about this week being the week for our baseball team, and we need these two here today to continue that. Um, and then we got a uh a huge double dip uh down in Des Moines uh against Carlisle and Dallas Center Grimes this weekend.

Yeah, these these two teams met a few weeks ago, and uh Healam was able to sweep the doubleheader eight to one and seven to nothing, but uh I checked some scores from Tuesday and game one of the doubleheader against D. Sergeant Bluff only lost two to one.

Yeah, they got some good pitching. I had a really good opportunity to talk to Coach Nelson uh from Sergeant Bluff before the game. Uh he talked about how his team, since we've seen him last, is starting to play some good baseball, starting to put some real real uh contact uh basketball. Um kids starting to step up. He's extremely young, and as you know, and we've seen it on our own team, young kids, uh freshmans, eighth graders, sophomores, they become juniors and seniors overnight in a baseball season because you really don't have any any other choice. You either pick it up or you probably have somebody else filling in for you.

Yeah, absolutely. Um it's you know, we've got a week and one game left in this baseball season, so uh they may have been eighth graders when the season started, but uh they're they're freshmen now. Same thing with the freshmen they're sophomores, sophomores are juniors, and uh glad to see uh we'll get to the lineup here in a little bit, but glad to see that they uh pretty much kept the infield intact from uh Tuesday, game two, when they had uh Jonas at first and Chase at second and uh JJ at short and then Gesey over at third base. Uh, you know, Cal being a uh natural third baseman, uh he was really comfortable over there, even though he did make a great play out at second base, uh snagged the line drive and was able to turn a double play. But uh he was excited to get back to third base and he showed that you know he's got a glove over there and he can he can make some plays and and it gives us a lot of speed and a lot of options on the infield.

It really does, and and uh before the you know, obviously I go down and I talk to the coaches and I got some keys uh from both coaches about winning today. And Coach Wesselman and I talked about the very thing you're talking about right now, Mike, uh and and Coach Taylor. We talked about uh how the loss of Schaehner, you know, gives another kid an opportunity, and we saw good things from that kid, you know, in in in the doubleheader against West High School. And again, that's one of the keys to us winning is utilizing the speed that we have. And if you look from third base over to first outfield, we're probably as quick a team as they're probably gonna see in 3-8.

Yeah, that's that's definitely true. And and you know, Cal, he was uh star on the Healing Boys soccer team that that made it to state and uh got a late start playing a lot of baseball because he was tied up with soccer, but uh he showed he showed on Tuesday uh the kind of athlete he is. He's a really good athlete, multi-sport athlete, and was able to come in like he'd been here all season long. I know he's been playing some JV ball with uh with Jeff Blander and and that team, but yeah, uh he stepped in and varsity level and and you know did some really good things for for getting his first start.

Yeah, and let's and and let's just look at our infield. We'll go we'll go with Healing first in some of the keys. We'll look at our infield. You know, the infield that we had in that second game, even and and the first game, uh you got Cal Geez at third, uh JJ Hope at short. You guys know what we talked. We've talked about JJ till we're blue in the face. What you know what we think about JJ. We think he's one of the top, probably shortstops, not just in 3A, but in all of uh high school baseball in the state of Iowa. Chase Beck at second base, that's his natural position. You can tell the play he made the other night against West might have been in between between that and then and the catch Dylan made, might have been one of the top two plays we've seen uh maybe in the last couple years. Just an unbelievable play. And then at first base, the athleticism of Jonas uh Jensen when he's over there, and then uh also the athleticism of Mason Moravic, you really those two are really kind of very equal and give us extremely speed and and just good baseball IQ over at first base.

Yeah, absolutely. They uh both athletic, got good gloves, uh able to keep the ball in front of them whenever it's it's bounced over there, it's it's a you know bad throw. And like I said the other day, it in a week it looked like Mason grew about seven inches because he looks a lot taller uh now than he did a week ago or two weeks ago to me. I know he's not that much taller, but it sure seems like it. And and Jonas, uh, you know, we've talked about him a lot earlier in the season and what he went through to get started and and where he's he's reached now. Uh just you know a really great story.

And then and then let's look at our outfield before we go to the main man. Uh the outfield, left field uh with Tommy Carroll, uh probably playing is he's playing center this game, Mike. I didn't even look. He'll be he moves to center when Dylan Knapp is throwing. Uh but Tommy Carroll, Dylan Knapp, and Nathan Gaswin generally are outfielders. Um I think Mason's is Mason moving, or no, uh excuse me, Jonas is going to be in left field tonight, which will be a huge which will be huge because he's got some serious wheels. But even in our outfield, we are solid. Defensively, our outfield has as good an arms and with Dylan Knapp in center generally and Tommy Carroll in left, um, they just cover a lot of ground. And Tommy, uh natural over at that left field position, but is interchangeable between all three, like when Gas wins pitch and he'll move to right, etc. And then, of course, behind the plate, uh fundamentally, defensively, as good a catcher, folks, as you're gonna see in baseball, come out and watch him. If you've got a kid that wants to be a catcher, come out and watch Peyton Erickson, uh, how he handles the pitchers, how he sets himself up inside, outside, and how he how he moves his knees uh for balls in the dirt, and then his command of the pitchers. None better.

And uh the keys to their game, obviously, is for Wagger to just throw strikes. And that's what kind of what Heal's been going through. We got lots of guys that can throw, but we're trying to find pitchers.

I'm sorry, hit three batters, and struck out 13. He has an ERA of 556. And for Healen, Dylan Knapp, this is his sixth start. He comes in with a record of 3-2. He's thrown 29 innings. They had to play at the old complex, but the grass is in now, and and they've been given some professional instruction on how to keep this thing going and get it ready for next year. So uh it should be should be a great complex for years to come.

After that, Mike, he was solid, shut him out until I think they got one run in the top of the seventh. Uh other than that, he threw a complete game. And we got out of him, I think, what coach wanted. Uh he's a solid performer, probably definitely number two, three pitcher.

We saw that he couldn't get the curveball in and they were sitting on the fastball. Uncharacteristic of Dylan um to go three, four innings, he threw a lot of pitches. On our side, um they did what we couldn't do. They got guys in scoring position and they produced uh via small ball, uh via sacrifice flies, hitting balls in gaps, etc. We had, I think we left probably five guys on base that were in scoring position. Yep, definitely. And in the one inning, in the fifth inning, I think we had first and second, nobody out, and we didn't produce them. We were at the top of the order.

Yeah, it's it's tough when uh you get runners on base and you're not able to push them across, and uh, that's the complete opposite of what Sergeant Bluff was able to do. Sergeant Bluff was able to get runners in scoring position, and they were able to to get those guys home and and score runs and push eight runs across in that first game and and beat us eight to two. It was uh it was it was masterful baseball on Sergeant Bluff's part. It was to be able to, like I said, you know, they'd get a runner at first and and they're putting him in motion and they're able to make contact, and he ends up at third base. All of a sudden you got first and third guy from first is stealing second. You got two runners in scoring position and uh really putting pressure on on the healing pitching and and the healing defense, which healing defense did a great job. Cal Geesey did a great job down at third base. JJ made some great plays short. We didn't make any errors. There were no errors. I mean, it was it was all good, all good stuff. It just sergeant Bluff was able to produce the runs that Healing wasn't able to do.

Yeah, Coach Nelson's aggressive, he's aggressive by nature, he's been that way ever since I've known him. They played aggressive. Um, you know, and then we of course we've got we finished with East and AL and Lewis Central, and those six games are are big games, especially the Lewis Central one at the end.

He spent a couple days out in Arizona with his son Caleb, and I'm going to let him do all the talking. I'm not even going to ask questions. So just fire away. What's been going on out there in Arizona for your family and for Caleb the last couple days?

Yeah, first off, just want to thank you guys. You guys, we were down in Arizona listening to the game. So thanks for all that you guys do. Really appreciate the coverage. I grew up playing baseball and never had this coverage of following the team around and giving us when we're out of town, things like that, games, just listening to the game. So appreciate everything you guys do. Second, you know, a lot of support for Caleb down there. It's been hard to miss the high school season. That's been tough. So he's he's listening to the game today out there in Arizona, doing some testing. But thanks to everybody's support for him as he goes through this. A lot of coaches from other teams, a lot of families, parents, friends, all that. So thank you, everyone listening too. Appreciate all your support. Yeah, we got down there. It's into the 110-degree weather. It was like an oven down there. But Chase Fields obviously air conditioned in there and it's indoors. So you know, just met a lot of good people. He checked in, he stayed with the players all week and met some guys. Guys down there from College Road Series were down there after. They're not doing much of the hitting infield and all that stuff, but they're doing some interviews. So that was good. Coach Taylor out after. Yeah, so it was good. He's he started off doing some you know some testing and stuff like that, just some uh physical testing, they have medical stuff, some labs, um, some of that stuff that they do. Um, and then he threw yesterday, had you know, had to wait for about three hours to throw, but um had an opportunity to throw on big league mounted was pretty cool and saw him on the big screen and um did good. Um you know I think he was low 90s, I think he had 92 on a you know, just good bullpen metrics were good, and um changeups is really good. So he threw well. Um so proud of his efforts, and then today he's doing a lot of um, I think he has like they do crazy crazy, it's like MRIs and x-rays and all that stuff, and then tomorrow have some interviews and some more uh lab work and strength and conditioning, and then he's here for the weekend and then leaves Sunday, so that's kind of the schedule, but it's been a great experience to meet a lot of good players. There are some dudes down there, like just some of the guys hitting the ball is incredible, so it's good to see, it's fun.

First of all, congratulations on everything. And um, I want to go back a little bit. Uh you know, obviously we're all proud of what what's going on with Caleb. Um, and we're you know, proud of what's going on with Aiden and Noah. I mean, you you've got some athletes coming up, but let's get back to Caleb. The thing about Caleb, uh, and I talked to Mike, I've talked to Mike several times about it, is we've probably never seen this around here. I I've been thinking back, and we've had some really good ball players that have come through here. You know, you were a pitcher, you played at college level. Um I've seen I was around when Joe when Joe Bicinius pitched, uh, happened to be on the staff at that time. Uh I was umpiring when Donnie and Billy Wingert came through, but we've never seen it to where we've had the scouts in the stands. And all of us, we take that for granted, but but talk about how that is at first of all, as a parent, when you're seeing that and your kids out there, the excitement, number one, but also the cautiousness, number two, and then talk about how Caleb, maybe the nerves and and what that uh what that kind of comes with when he's pitching.

Yeah, first of all, seeing like like there's been some incredible baseball players here, and you know, seeing Joe. I actually had not bad against Joe and after I got done with college, and he was really good. So um, you know, and he made it to the bigs, and you know, that's that's the dream, and he's you know, obviously look up to a guy like that. But you know, I I coached him this spring and you know kind of saw um there's a lot of good baseball players down there, and um saw you know, obviously him managing that process through you know starting off with a couple innings and you know just kind of working through that.

And I think um he's handled it well.

He's um you know, coaches at Healing and growing up, just he's played a lot of competitive baseball and been in you know situations where he's failed a lot.

Um I think that's helped him just the failure part of it, is just learning from it and understanding you know you can't be perfect all the time. And and that's one thing a lot of these scouts and people say is just they want to see you fail. Yeah. I think he just knows that and understands, and that's what you know you try to tell all kids, is like failure's game. Um you're gonna fail, you just gotta get the next one. And there's times where he's not as sharp as he could be, and you know, he's maybe doesn't have his fastball a day, but he's gotta find a slider or change up and do that. Um so I think being in front of this, he's you know, yeah, it's it was I was kind of nervous for him yesterday, just kind of throwing in front of everyone. And you know, it's uh you're on there by yourself, kind of on an island, but he's handled it well. He's really the mental side of it, is he's gotten better at it. Yeah, he used to struggle, he's younger at that, so he's gotten better at that. Build some confidence there.

Well, we'll be excited, obviously. We're excited for him to see what he can do down there, but we're also gonna be really excited to get him back. And uh it sounds like to me that he's coming back. Is it Tuesday, Jeff? Uh I missed that first part.

Yeah, he's uh Wednesday or he gets back here Sunday, and um yeah, and he's he texted me today. He's he misses misses it, obviously. Yeah, and it's tough, tough, um tough decision kind of you know going through this, and it's hard. I was talking to a few people, scouts, stuff like that. It's just a unique situation is where one of the only uh states that plays baseball this yeah, um so it's been it's tough, and um, but yeah, he's he's itching to get back and play ball. He loves the game.

Um I'm gonna put a fence on it. Um he he just wants to be happy. You know, it's my wife and I talk a little bit. It's um he's in a good spot. He's got a um Coach Heller and Coach Hellerland and I are phenomenal people. Um and you know, if he gets that opportunity, you know, he's great. And he he wants you know he loves all those people. He's got some good incoming freshmen coming in that are really he's got to know pretty good. Um, you know, if he gets an opportunity, it's it's it's tough. Um it's it's really tough. So um we'll see what happens, and I guess God has a plan and we'll see what happens.

Yeah, Coach Taylor, I know thank you so much for coming up uh and joining us up here. Um let's talk a little bit about the last game uh first and then kind of talk a little bit about this next game. Uh you and I were talking on the way up here about the opportunities that we had offensively and just not able to produce with some guys in scoring position. Let's talk about that first.

Sure. So we generated some traffic and we were happy with with our at bats early, especially scoring in the first. Um with their starting pitcher, they had an eighth grade catcher and really tried to take advantage of that, and we did, but you know we steal so many bases. Yeah, so you can get to second, you can get to second and third. We get runners in scoring position, and it's time to drive in a run. So that's kind of a frustration for the coaches. You have some bad at bats, you have some pop-up, some strikeouts, some untimely situational hitting there, which is kind of what our offense is about. We've got to be you can bunt and steal and run until they're at second or third, and then it's then it's time to hit it on. That's what we're missing there.

Yeah, and and Sergeant Bluff, I mean, let's just they're clone. Coach Nelson, you guys think alike. Yeah, he's aggressive on the base pads, and they did exactly what we did. He was stealing, hitting and run, getting guys in scoring position, and and they came through with some key hits.

They're they're a lot like us in that way, and they're active offensively, they're they're looking for balls in the dirt, they're putting on plays. I think that's kind of a a signature of a seasoned high school coach is trying to force action a little bit. Um, don't just sit back and let the game come to you. And um and they they put on a nice pick. I mean, they work on some of those higher level things. So they're a well-coached ball club. Um, we know that they're gonna be competitive, and I think we just gave away a little bit too many too much, especially pitching-wise. Dylan wasn't his sharpest, you know. That many free passes really puts a lot of pressure on the defense and then puts a lot of pressure on the offense.

Yeah, we talked about it. He just had a little trouble getting that getting that slider to work. He was he was struggling with the slider, and and and as Mike and I were kind of saying, they were kind of sitting back on that fastball after a while.

Yeah. So just a little inside baseball, or for some of the listeners um that have played at a higher level, um, he's really working east to west. East to west. We throw a lot of two scenes which will come back to his arm side, yep, and then his slider will break away and then'll break to his glove side. So really nothing he throws astray. Correct. And he's kind of throwing this banana peel, everything tunnels off this banana peel. And once he kind of eliminated that slider, you make him a one-pitch pitcher, they know that everything's gonna be coming arm side, and and they kind of figured out how to get some barrels on it.

He'll come back, he's he's a competitor, and then you know, and like Jeff just said in that interview, every pitcher, you ever do everybody goes through that. You don't need you don't, you know, you might not have all your stuff that night.

Yeah, Coach Wesselman's got a good story. Um, when he played in the prospect league, he was coached by Bobby Jenks, World City.

But he said maybe 10% of the time you might have your A plus stuff where everything's working. Yeah. And probably another 10% of the time, you're just gonna get chased in the first inning. Yeah, you got nothing. But really, it's the other 80%, the other 75% is everything in between. How you compete with no change up, how you compete with no slider, you know. So Dylan's a competitor and he he still played a great center field, he still had good at bats, and he's gonna be a key piece of what we do.

And that's exactly what I would expect. Who we got? So we got Aiden going this second game. Let's talk a little bit about uh the second game real quick, and I know you have to get going here.

So sure. So unique situation for Aiden, um, JD tournament, JD tournament this weekend. So we're trying to figure out how we're gonna split our roster um conference tournament, yeah, kind of a city tournament, and so getting Aiden some more at bats and getting Aiden in the field. Um he's pretty much a varsity pitcher at this point, but not always a varsity hitter. So we thought if we can get him a game here, then he can stay in town Saturday and play with the JB. So um good spot for an eighth grader here, a nice competitive MRAC team, and and then we'll we'll go to Des Moines this weekend without him. So Aiden on the mound, he'll get DH'd for. Um you'll see a lot of the same players want to move Jonas to first base, really like his athleticism and speed. Um having the DH for Aiden gets chased back back in the lineup, so you'll see him offensively as well. Puts our puts our outfield back in order. Defense will look the same with uh with Beck Ho and Cal. Cal kind of coming into his own.

Yeah, we've we've he's he's looked good at the plate. Um, he's got a good glove. Uh like we were talking, you know, you hate seeing uh Shanner go down. That's a lot of RBIs, a lot of hits. But you know what? One man goes down, it's an opportunity for someone else. And and right now that opportunity just happens to be going to to Cal and Jonas.

You see more Cal, you see more Jonas, you see more Mason Moravic, you see more Jackson Vickery, and that's just you coach those guys for you're gonna get an opportunity. You want to play more, then then take the most of your opportunities and you coach the team, you know, whether Caitlin's in Arizona or whether Brody's not available. But we don't have, you know, uh a 600 slugger and four home runs coming off the bench. So we need everybody to be that much better. We just need we need 10% more out of everybody.
