What I I mean, Mike knows how I feel about this kind of weather. This is great ball weather, as far as I'm concerned, as far as the players are concerned. Not so much for the fans that are sitting out in the heat and sweating, but uh as a player, these are these are easy games to get loose for, easy games to get up for.

Yeah, or the two guys sitting up in a cramped booth that I don't even know if opening the window is gonna help. But we're excited for this. It's uh the drive to the playoffs, folks, that starts a week from Friday, and uh the pairings came out today, and we'll get to those here in a little bit during uh both games, let everybody know what's going on. But uh Healing had a uh played two games on Saturday over in Des Moines. First one was against Carlisle, lost that one eight to three, but it was a four-to-three game in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Carlisle was able to push four runs across for the uh final spread, and a little bit of the same issue that Healan's had the last couple weeks is getting guys on second and third scoring position with no outs, one out, and just not able to push them across. So extremely competitive in game one, and then game two, they were able to beat Dallas Center Grimes 10-7.

Uh he passed away last week. Uh 1975 Healan grad, uh not probably a bigger supporter of Healen uh school and healan athletics than Mike. Uh of course he's married to a classmate, classmate of both our wives, um Mary Barons, uh Mary Miller. So want to say our prayers and uh go out to the Miller family, to the Barons family, uh just a tremendous guy, and and we're gonna miss him. Yeah, absolutely.

I think you and I probably coached against him in uh when our kids were in middle school. Yeah. Uh he was around a lot, and like you said, he was a great supporter of uh healing athletics at all levels and uh a great family, and uh very sorry to hear that, but our prayers are going out to uh his family uh as the prayer service in Rosary is tonight and then the funeral is tomorrow morning.

Yeah, I was looking at the stats, Mike, uh to get back to the game here, uh folks. Uh Mike's is absolutely right, and the description of what's been going on for the Bishop Healing uh has not been from lack of defense, our defense is solid across the field. Uh coach uh Jacob Wesselman has really come in to a lineup that defensively is probably rivals anybody, all the way around the infield, all the way around the outfield. Our pitching has been a little bit suspect, and um we'll get a good outing and then maybe an average outing, and it's just something we need to solidify going into the playoffs. And then, of course, the hitting. It's not been so much about the hitting in general, it's been the time of the hits. We're getting hits, we're getting guys on base, but a lot of times we're leaving them there. We've left a lot of runners, especially down at Sergeant Bluff in that first game, left a lot of runners on the on the on the base paths.

Yeah, absolutely. That uh, you know, that can come back to haunt you down the road, but uh you know, over the weekend I know JJ Hope was on fire with the bat, and he actually leads the state in 3A with hits. Uh so he's you know obviously he's the catalyst, he's a lot like Hunter Wahab was last year. He's got to get on, and then we've got to do something with him. And uh I love what they've done with the batting order. When we get to that, uh you're gonna you're gonna hear some familiar names. Uh one that that was out all last week out in Arizona, he is back. Uh so really looking forward to having Kayla back in the lineup. But uh they've moved some people around, and and if you once we go through it, and John and I will talk about it, is we've got speed at the top and we've got speed at the bottom. So if the top can get on, they've got people that are gonna push them, and if the if the bottom gets on, then the top is there to to drive them in. So really excited about uh what's what's in store for uh this baseball team over the next few weeks. Absolutely.

Um tonight on the mound in the first game is gonna be Dylan Knapp, and in the second game is gonna be Aiden LaFaver. Uh they played against Lincoln a couple two, three weeks ago, Mike. Two tremendous ball games, 5-4 and 2-1 up in uh, or excuse me, down in Council Bluffs. And these two pitchers went through great games. Coach uh Wesselman is expecting nothing but but that tonight, hoping to get a couple wins. And then I asked him, I just asked him the question, and I said, uh, how what kind of capacity do we have with Caleb? And we'll talk about Caleb here in a little bit. Uh and sounds like to me that he's gonna be throwing Thursday night. So we will see Caleb back on the mound to how many pitches, to what capacity, I don't know, but that'll be huge for Healan to have him back on the mound.

Another another category that we may be leading the state in, Mike. Let's talk about Dylan Knapp a little bit. Uh we know what kind of center fielder Dylan Knapp is, we know what kind of competitor Dylan Knapp is, we've seen him on the mound where he has shut teams down. We've seen him give up a couple runs and then settle in. Uh uncharacteristic of Dylan last time out. He had a little trouble finding his inside outside uh pitch. So bottom line is they just started sitting on him, and it just wasn't a Dylan nap outing. And Sergeant Bluff took advantage of some some timely hits and and kind of chased Dylan out in about what the fifth inning, I think. So we're hoping to see a lot better outing from Dylan tonight.

Kylie, before we get into some of the players, the uh pitching, catching, uh fielding, and that type of stuff, tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you to Sioux City, Briar Cliff College, and Bishop Healan.

Um I always knew, so I'm from Wisconsin, I always knew that I wanted to go to college outside of the state just to kind of get to know myself better and obviously play college at play college softball at the next level. Um, and Briar Cliff brought me a great deal, and I said, let's go. And it was kind of sentimental too, because um my grandma and grandpa they grew up in Sioux Falls. Okay, and my grandpa was actually a famous race car driver in Sioux Falls, so it kind of was just being close to that kind of hit home. So yeah, that's why I chose Briar Cliff.

Awesome, and and what great success you had there. Uh if I'm not mistaken, two-time all conference player, maybe three, and uh you know, four oh what'd you hit four fifty your senior year? Let's talk a little bit about the Bishop Healan Crusaders, okay? We have not seen this kind of success at Bishop Healen in quite a while, quite a while. We're 25 and 8 currently, ranked number 13. Um, I'm gonna talk a little bit about the players. We are hitting a crazy 327 as a team, if I'm not mistaken. And I'm just a few of the players, I'm gonna throw them out there and then love for you to comment on them after I'm done here. Aaron Fitzpatrick hitting 351, uh Sophie Danenberg, a crazy, or Danenbring, a crazy 694, Emma Moody, um 322, Eliana Ross, uh hitting 38 uh 92, Shannon Cleary, 406, Sophie Lane, an eighth grader hitting 360, and and Brooke Reimer uh hitting 320. Can you talk a little bit about your hitting and some of the players that are key for you right now?

Yeah, I mean, a lot of it starts with them wanting to get better, and I noticed a lot of them want to get that extra work in, and that's what it's gonna take to get those numbers like that. So you have a Sophie Danningbring who works super hard all year round, and Sophie Lane, an eighth grader, who works super hard all year round, and they're coming in and they're pushing our upperclassmen to work harder, and it's just inspiring, you know. You have two young girls coming in and just stepping up right away, and I think it kind of set the tone for our upperclassmen like, hey, we have to work. So it was really cool to see. I mean, Aaron, uh, Brooke, Emma, Ellie, they're all great athletes, and I think this year just really is like a breakthrough year for them. Um, I know Emma's having a great year for sure, and I kind of expect that from Ellie and Aaron and um Brooke. They work hard, they play on travel teams during the year as well, so I expect their hard work to shine through.

I I think it's really important to understand, you know, what your philosophy is, Kylie. I think uh, first of all, I can see that you have a lot of stolen bases. So you're not station to station. You'd like to run. And I see you're having a lot of success running. Speak to that a little bit. Do you always put them in in gear as a starting point or do you wait for a particular time?

Um, I kind well, one, we have to know the catcher's arm. Like last night, we played a team that had an excellent catcher. So we did not steal any bases because that's just what the name of the game was. Right. Um we have other teams that, you know, does have a good arm, but maybe, you know, statistically doesn't make a lot of throw outs, we're gonna run the bases and we're gonna test that a little bit.

Well, Shannon's pretty fast. So Shannon, Shannon is gonna be one that you're gonna put running on an ongoing basis. Oh, yeah. So if she gets a single, you can pretty much say it's a double, pretty much most of the time. Yep, which is cool.

And she's had a lot of success this year, just from second to third, sneaking over, which has been really cool to see.

Okay, very, very cool. What about pitching? Do you like to throw a lot of gas? Are you more throwing uh option pitches like curveballs, things like that? Tell me a little bit about your pitching philosophy.

Yeah, we have two really solid pitchers. Um we have Aaron and then Allie Danenbring. And, you know, I like to hit the corners. I don't we're not gonna pitch you a pitch right down the middle. We're gonna move the ball, we're gonna give you off-speed pitches and kind of see what you can hit and what you can't.

Do a lot of teams go fishing high in the zone, or do they or do they kind of lay off that? Uh at at this level?

You know, it depends. I mean, if they're getting aggressive, maybe. But uh I would say not to start, but if they're falling down and work coming up, they might chase after it.

Because I think in the past a rise ball's been fairly successful with some peach pitchers.

So that would be something that I was curious about, is it still a successful thing or have people kind of adapted to that?

Um, it depends how effective the rise ball is on that day. Okay. So like some days it's not working as well, and you can see it right off, right out of the hand, but other days you can it's it works really well.

So you have a pretty good idea, first or second inning, what's gonna be successful that game or not successful that game. Yeah. Which is pretty cool.

Yep, and that's I talk to the pitchers like, hey, what's working, what's not working. You know, just to that's very cool.

Hey, you're talking about pitchers. Aaron uh Fitzpatrick, 12 and 5 on the year with the 2.18 ERA. Uh Alexander Danenbring, um, 10 and 2, 2.89 ERA. I mean, crazy numbers, obviously, um, for the girls. Who's your number one? Who's your number two? Are they both number one right now? And you kind of depending on the day on who's got what?

I think I ultimately decide on who we're playing. Um, you know, it's really cool to have a lefty righty pitcher duo.

And it just kind of throws the batter off with their vision. So, like if you have a righty batter and you're pitching a lefty, they can't see it as well. So I like to actually compliment them as much as possible. Um, it just ultimately depends on who we're who we're playing. But they're both rock star pitchers.

Yeah, and Tim brought up the rise ball, drop ball. I mean, daylight today when it's gonna be humid, uh it it's crazy how much the rise ball and drop ball will be more effective based off humidity and the air. Right. It really is. Right. Um and you know that as well, all the softball you played, Kylie.

So let's get into the meat of it, the fielding. You know, you being a shortstop yourself, yeah. You know the importance of having a good middle infield. And me as a former catcher, I always love to go back and I call him the quarterback of the team, but shortstops might argue that, right? Uh let's look at the fielding. Fielding, you guys are fielding at a 949 percentage. Emma Moody is at a crazy 995 fielding percentage. Talk a little bit about your fielding, talk a little bit about Emma, because we were talking about your nip in the corners with inside outside. In order to do that, you have got to have a catcher that can frame the ball and take command of the pitcher and get that and get that extra two to three inches outside inside.

Um, that was one of the major goals that I set for these girls going in, um, just looking at, you know, what am I walking into? Last year they had 70 airs, and I was like, hey, that's something we can nip in the butt right away. I mean, a lot of airs is mental, and we have the talent on our team to make a simple, you know, fielding and throwing. Um, so yeah, that was one of the biggest goals that I set right away was like, hey, we're gonna we're gonna work on this defense and we're gonna figure this out because defense does win games. I mean, we're we can be up a few runs and we're gonna have to go back in the field and secure the deal. So we need to work on that. Um, Emma behind the plate has been solid all year round. I mean, that's one of the things too, is like, hey, when we get tired, I need you to focus harder. Um, so we've been working on that and just saying, present with every pitch, and she's just been great back there.

Yeah, and and I and I'm assuming, and I've seen Emma in other sports, and and I and I know mom was a former great softball player. Um, I'm assuming you have her taking command, she's up there. Uh, I've seen a couple of the games, and from what I see, she she generally is the floor general out there.

Yeah, yep, she brings a she brings a ton of energy to these to this group of girls, so it's awesome.

Go tell us a little bit about your mindset whenever you're coming into a game and and uh do you guys know a lot about the you know the batters on the other teams where you need lineup and everything, or is it just instinct for you?

Uh we have we have spray charts, spray charts in the dugout, so that helps a lot. Coach is always directing us right way. Uh right way.

I think I think JJ got thrown into this. He wasn't he he got surprised by being called up here, so uh he he thinks he's up here in the majors and he's not. We're we're a level below him right now. But uh no, I mean you know, John and I talk all the time. And last couple last couple weeks, the the infield lineup, you know, we have Jonas at first and and Chase at second, you at short, obviously, and then and then Cal moving over to third, which is a natural position for him. But we've talked a lot about the quickness on the infield that you know with with that setup. And um do you do you feel that uh that there's some quickness there that it's teams are gonna have a hard time getting balls past our our infield?

Yeah, for sure. Me and Chase up the middle. Uh Chase really quick, Cal's quick. They both really routine with the ball. Uh I think our infield's looking upset right now.
