These are the dog days of summer, and we couldn't ask for two better teams and a better rivalry for tonight's game between Sergeant Bluff and Bishop Healing.

Well, eight eighteen-year-old and uh 63-year-old Pete uh has a little bit different effect on it, Mike, but uh either or I I'm looking for just an awesome game between these two teams. Very similar teams tonight, uh between Sergeant Bluff, Coach Nelson, and Bishop Healing, uh Coach Wesselman. Uh both extremely aggressive, both love to run. Um, you know, both both love to hit and run. Yeah, you name it. They're very similar. They mirror each other.

Before we go too much further, uh, want to give a big congratulations to Caleb LeFaver on being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round. He is reporting to Fort Fort Myers, Florida tomorrow. And they'll be heading out as a family to Fenway next week to uh continue his road to uh professional baseball. And also, uh make a note, John and I will be on tomorrow night. Be sure you tune in. I think you and I are talking, been 15, 15, 16 years since they've had this many wins. And this is her first year uh with some with a lot of young players.

Yeah, she's got a lot of young, a lot from you know that were around last year. So uh the the atmosphere is uh is just right for these girls. They've made a good run, and pregame will be at 6 4 6 45, and first pitch will be at 7 o'clock. So John and I will be hitting the road tomorrow afternoon. We'll head over to Fort Dodge and hopefully uh do a good job broadcasting softball. I think it's the first time that Catholic Radio has broadcast softball, so really looking forward to it. Uh talked to Kylie quite a few times and uh great young lady, and uh she cares about the kids. She thinks she's doing the right things with the program, and like you said, they're very young, they're gonna be good for for several years.

Hey, you you brought up Caleb Lefaver, so let's get to that part uh of my notes here with Bishop Healan. Um tonight it's gonna be next man up, Mike. We've talked about it and we've seen it. Matter of fact, the last time they played Sergeant Bluff, it was next man up. We didn't have Caleb at that time, and uh we moved some guys around. We got Cal Geese back tonight. He's done with some travel soccer, and he's back in the lineup tonight playing third base. So he's he's gonna take over that role that we saw him in earlier in the year, and it's gonna really add some speed to our lineup, and and for Healing, that's gonna be the key tonight. Speed, hit and run, stealing bases, playing small ball, um, you know, and just manufacturing runs.

Yeah, manufacturing runs and and doing it uh the smart way. Uh getting guys on, you know, we've got we'll go through the batting order here shortly, but a lot of speed at the top, they've got some good speed at the bottom. And the bottom of the batting order, I mean, Chase Beck has been knocking the heck out of the ball.

Last three games, it's just been crazy how he's been hitting. As a matter of fact, we got uh what'd you say the other night when we were done with the game, five out of our seven runs the other night came from the bottom of the order. Yep, yep, yeah. That's huge. And that and we're gonna need that tonight. Let's just make no no mistake about it. We're gonna need the bottom of the order to come through, and we're gonna need five strong innings at least from from uh probably from Aiden Lefavre tonight. Yeah, get us into that fifth inning.

Absolutely. Aiden will be the starter tonight, and we'll get to all the stats on that here shortly. But it's gonna take uh, you know, we we lose Caleb's bat. I mean Caleb's been a very good hitter all season long and uh had a huge you know, last at bat. You and I kind of had a feeling it would be his last at bat, and we just wanted to see him do something, and I mean he crushed a double that uh should have gone out of the park. It just the wind knocked it down, but he hit it really hard, and uh great to see him end his high school career that way. Well and eight strikeouts out of nine. I mean eight out of nine strikeouts, and I didn't I think he didn't want to make Storm Lake look bad, and that's why he let the one guy get on. But uh yeah, it was great. I mean, and for those uh for those of uh you that missed the end of the broadcast uh the other night, it was a combined no-hitter between uh Caleb Nathan and JJ Hope. Uh went seven innings, didn't give up one hit. Uh just a couple guys reached uh for Storm Lake.

So and and tonight we're hoping to see maybe a little bit of uh Nathan Gaswin if we get him into the fifth, sixth inning. We might see a little bit of Nathan. Uh they're gonna keep him limited tonight, hoping we can get through this one and get to MLC, probably I'm thinking coming out of the other side of the bracket.

Yeah, it'll be uh it'll be important to have all the arms that we we can have available, but you you can't play Wednesday if you don't get by today. So today's gonna be the big one, and and these two teams met earlier in the year. The first time uh Healan swept the doubleheader eight to one and ten to nothing. That was at Bishop Mueller. And then the second time around, Sergeant Bluff won the first game eight to two, and Healan took game two eight to six. So except for the last two times they played, it's been very competitive.

And you look kind of look at the bottom of the batting order, and the the batting averages aren't that great, but they've been able to get some key timely hits whenever we've needed them.

So it's Yeah, I I I've got that written down also, Mike. Up and down the order, they're they're basically uh 300 hitters, and as a team, they they they match that. They hit 309 as a team. Um, if you look at the Crusaders and Sergeant Bluff, you know, Crusaders hit 298, they hit 309. Really similar stats up and down. I think both teams are almost within 10 of both hits and runs scored on the season. So uh and coaching philosophy from Coach Nelson, Coach Wesselman, uh, and Coach Taylor and his staff, very similar.

Yep, the uh stat line for Aiden LaFaver for the Bishop Heel and Crusaders. He's got seven starts this year. He comes in with the three-and-one record, he has thrown 37 innings. Teams are hitting 314 against him. He's given up 50 hits, 25 runs, 23 of those have been earned. He's walked 13 and hit seven. He has struck out 33 and has an ERA of 435. For Sergeant Bluff. Braden Huffman comes in. He started seven games. He's got a record of three and five. He's pitched 44 in two third innings. Teams are hitting 183 against him. He's given up 40 hits, 35 runs, 25 of those have been earned. He's walked 25, he's hit 12 batters, struck out 43, and has an ERA of 392. So should be a good matchup between two pitchers. Uh Aiden's no longer an eighth grader. He's he's a freshman. It's the end of uh nearing the end of the season for both these teams, and uh Aiden's all grown up now.

Uh yeah, he's had a couple outings where he struggled, but overall, he's when he gets that slider and that curveball going, he's he's a good pitcher. He can do it. So he's looking forward to it. He reminds you a lot of his brother when he got throwing some of those pitches. He he may, you know, I don't I gotta talk to Jeff, but he may be even a little bit ahead of Caleb at that same age. Gaswin's moving on, but we've got Dylan Knapp coming back, he's a sophomore, you got Tommy Carroll, freshman, uh JJ Hope, sophomore at shortstop, uh Geecey or excuse me, JJ Hope Jr. at shortstop, geese sophomore, uh Chase Beck uh Jr. and all of our first basemans. Uh you got uh Vickery, or excuse me, uh Jonan coming back. We've got a lot of good things coming in, but like you said, pitching's gonna be the key. We've got a young Caleb or Aiden Lefaber who will be a freshman next year, uh, who will just do nothing but grow. Um Mason Moravic did some really good things for us this year. Uh just he'll also continue to grow and get a little bit stronger and get a little more velocity on their fastballs.

Yeah, looking forward to it. The uh start of the season, the bottom of the order wasn't there for us, then it came through, yeah. Uh and then it was kind of spread out throughout the lineup. So uh but pitching definitely was the Achilles heel for this team uh all year long. We get good performances. You know, Mason he would come in and God bless him, he'd get himself in a spot and he'd always find a way to get himself out. So I want to thank Grace Tott back in the studio for everything she did for us this year on baseball, and she's gonna work one more night for sure. We're gonna be over in Fort Dodge tomorrow night for the Healing Girls taking on Fort Dodge for a chance to go to state. Want to thank Jack Stevens for all he does for Catholic Radio. He's out here taking pictures, uh getting those so they can be posted on Facebook. Want to thank Tim Swedeen and Ann Reed for the opportunity to call baseball. Uh, really appreciate that opportunity.
