There's nothing like Friday night football. We got a good one to get someone here. With uh tonight's game with Sergeant Bluff by Lamar's and East High School. So boy, I tell you what, it's a good one. And tonight really is one of the premier games in the state.

It absolutely is. You talk to a lot of different people, and you can look at a lot of different rankings. Both of these teams are probably gonna find their way in the top five in pretty much everybody because here's why. Tradition A. But B, both of these teams only lost twice last year. One of them in the state championship game, we're talking about healing, and the other one I'm talking about with Sergeant Bluff is they lost in the state semifinals last year. So what you have is two programs that have established themselves as year in, year out, being that perennial team that can get to the get to the dome, do some damage, and matter the expectations again this year for both of those clubs.

Absolutely, and I tell you what, Sergeant Bluff has a lot of the pieces back uh on paper. I think they're the preseason number two ranked team in 4A, while the Crusaders uh sit right in the middle of the pack and uh rented anywhere you look from fifth to sixth in 3A. Uh a lot of uncertainties with the Crusaders. They lost a load of talent, but I tell you what, uh, in talking with uh Coach LeFleur extensively this week, uh, and we're gonna get an interview with him in just a minute here. Uh I tell you what, he's like very optimistic about what he's got coming up this year.

Gone is Jason Thomas and the McConnell, and then probably the best linebacking core in all the state last year. And that is, of course, who I'm talking about. Just four names that were just Harpenau, Lester, Meyer, Favors, you know, uh so many players gone, but here at Healing, they've learned to rebuild, and not a reload and not rebuild. That's kind of where the the blueprint for all these seasons end. And of course, John LeFleur has built something special here. He when he came in, they had to they needed to learn how to win. They've done that now. Now they're doing it, and now it just needs to get done at the final game of the season.

And you really get the feeling John's been around long enough. He's really hit his comfort zone. Yeah. You know, I think I think the kids know what they have in him, which is an he's an amazing coach and an amazing role model for the kids. But uh boy, he's just in talking to him, he just got a real comfort zone about his team. And you know, we're we're talking about him now. You're gonna hear his words here in just a few minutes, but uh we're pretty stoked up.

You know, I y you throw on the fact that it's the opening night, and which is always big, you know, and you throw on the fact that it's two top five teams, but it's who those top five teams are, Bob. It's it's Sergeant Bluff Luton and it's Healing, and over the past decade that has developed into probably one of the best rivalries in this part of the state.

Yeah, and uh, you know, a lot of it comes down to uh both teams obviously have excellent town, but both of them are well coached. Uh Justin Smith is just a lot of people. You and I have watched Justin since his days at Wakefield back in Nebraska back in the uh well before the turn of the century. Yeah. Um, you know, he everywhere he goes he's successful, and uh he's got a blueprint for victory and he's plugged it in here and it's been very successful. Always has a lot of speed, always has a lot of deception in what they do. I think the in maybe the most interesting aspect tonight is two new quarterbacks that uh haven't uh we've seen we've seen uh Eli Mil Milke on the quarter on the field a little bit with us last year when he he got a uh start up at uh up at uh Sioux Center. Sioux Center, yeah.

But uh I tell you what, his he looks a little bit different now though, Bob.

His development and uh you know last year it was kind of turning hand off. Jason Thomas, which was which is which is a wise thing. But this year uh a a lot of what we do is gonna be focused around him, and I'm excited to see that. And of course he uh uh Mr. Halers from uh Sergeant Bluff Luton uh they just plug in a guy that can uh RPO and do the runs, do a little bit of passing, but get that offense going with a lot of deception. So boy, it should be a great win. And we'll talk more about that after uh Coach LaFleur has a chance to chat with us.

Coach LaFleur has things going, and Bob touched on who's here and who's not, but let's get take a maybe a deeper dive into it with head coach John LaFleur, who sat down with us earlier this week to talk about tonight's big game and the season overall as he approaches to try to achieve that 45th or that 41st state playoff appearance this year.

So here we are sitting down with head coach John LaFleur, uh back again for another, hopefully a great successful campaign. John, you've had some fantastic seasons leading up to this one. You fell one game short, one win short last year of a state championship. But those kind of games, those kind of seasons are invaluable for building a program.

Oh, certainly. You know, anytime you have an opportunity to play and to play extra ball games outside of your regular season, that's great. Uh obviously uh we're not where we want to be. Um, because uh I think somebody asked me the other day, uh you know, you've been to the championship game twice. I said, Yeah, I've been a loser twice, too. And that's not that's not what the expectation is at Healing. Whether or not, you know, it's i we understand that it's extremely difficult to win state championships, but that's the expectation to be a champion and to do all the all the right things. So hopefully uh, you know, it takes a lot of work, a lot of preparation, a lot of luck too to get there. But uh, you know, the kids have worked really hard this past summer.

So you worked hard to get that word back at Healing, expectation. For a while there we there was just a moment where you almost hope we win a football game. Now the expectation is back to where it was where the playoffs aren't an expectation. Playing deep into the playoffs aren't an expectation. How did you get there?

SPEAKER_05 6:05

Just a really simple four-letter word. Work. Work. Football is not football. People try to make football really, really complicated, especially at the high school level. It's just put the work in, do the do the stuff day in, day out, get the reps in, do the fundamental, all the little things. If you do little things right and you play together for each other, you got a chance. And you know, we've been fortunate the last couple three years to have kids to buy into that. We've had some really outstanding athletes as well. And uh, you know, it it's a challenge every year, but you know, always looking forward to this challenge uh coming up.

Yeah, John, you know, it had to be kind of nice this summer to fly under the radar. I think people look at after the smoke cleared last year, they look at losing the likes of Noah Connolly, who had 1750 total yards, uh obviously Caseon Thomas with his fourteen hundred rushing yards and everything he did on the defensive end, and probably the best set of linebackers in the state in favors Leicester, Harper now Meyer. You know, people have got to be looking at at healing and saying, Well they got left. Yeah, what they got left and uh how they're gonna reload from that. But uh I tell you what, you got some you got some kids sitting in the in the shadows there that uh that are gonna do some good things this year. Tell us about some of those kids that maybe we haven't heard their names before or haven't heard much of them.

Yeah, you know, and they're rightfully slow flying under the radar, I guess, because we uh, you know, it's uh we lost a lot, like you know, like you said, a lot of really good football players. But I think we're really excited about the guys coming back. We've got a guys a lot of guys that have played really good winning football for us. Uh to start off on on the offensive line. You know, we've got uh five guys that have started for us uh in some capacity, not all the time starters, but at least they've all had starting experience. Uh three of them have started, I think, every game last year, and the other two had started some games, you know, invaluable in the high school. And the cohesiveness that it takes at the offensive line, I think that really is gonna benefit us. Uh, you know, with Max Aesop, Nolan uh Mickey at the tackles, uh, we got Aldo Gonzalez and uh uh Keaton Schweitzer, and then uh uh Max two at center, you know, all those guys have played really, really good football for us. And um, you know, uh if we're just talking about the offensive side of the ball, we got Eli Milkey coming back and is gonna be our quarterback to start off the year.

Let's talk about him real quick, John, because we talk about you know quarterbacks coming in at Healing, you've had some good ones that have have had big years recently, and you've been able to replace them. You've been the guys have stepped in and then done a great job. Eli last year stepped in in a tough spot in Sioux Center. You know, here's a kid that people may think, okay, well, not yet, yeah, big shoes to fill. Um he's going into those shoes pretty nicely over the summer. And he's this kid's an athlete. He can play. Um I think he might be that player that a lot of if you know, you know. Am I right?

If you know, you know. I think so. Eli has done an exceptional amount of work to get himself to get to be really a uh a really good football player. And he's got a he's got a tremendous arm, he's got a tremendous love for the game, really um wants to continue to play at the collegiate level. And I think uh, you know, because of his lack of playing prior, he's he's a little under the radar collegiately for the recruiting. But I think uh I think he'll open some eyes here. Uh, you know, he's a big kid, he's six four, two and a quarter, and can run and and put some. He looks the part. Yeah, absolutely. He looks the part. And uh we're excited to see what he can do. He's put a like I said, put a lot of work in with the guys through the course of spring, summer, and and uh, you know, it's it it's exciting to get out there and see what he can do. Um, you know, I hope he doesn't try to do too much. That's the biggest thing. And and recognize and realize that, hey, you know, get it to some of those guys on the perimeter that have a lot of talent and let them go make plays. And uh I think we can do that, and uh, we've got the the ability to do that with a lot of people.

As my partner Bob Geary would say, he's got some dudes that he can throw to. And he does have some dudes that he can throw to this year.

Absolutely, absolutely. We got you know the likes of Grant Wickham and JJ Hope out there, really electric kids, and Prince Wigba as well. Man, they've done an outstanding job uh uh on the out there with just those guys in in particular, and then I think another eye-opening guy is gonna be a Sira Matumbo at our tight end position. And you know, we can we'll keep him on the line of scrimmage and we can flex him off too. He's a matchup nightmare at 6'5, 2 uh 2 and a quarter, 230, somewhere in that ballpark that and can really run. Uh he's the I don't know, some I don't know if he's related, he's related to the Kumba Tumble somehow or another. Um really interesting kid. And uh and you know, there's a there's several other kids out there, Tommy Carroll, uh Dylan Knapp, uh just just to name a few that that can get on the perimeter. And we have weapons, and it's just gonna be getting to them at the right time and uh and then letting them go make some plays.

Bob with that offensive line, he's gonna have some time.

Absolutely. Yeah, how about how about your running backs? Then you can switch gears over to the defensive side of the line.

Sure, running backs, you know, it's it's gonna be a little more by committee. We've been spoiled the last couple years, having Caseon and Avery as well, you know, both really, really good high school backs. Um, I think Dylan Aff is gonna get some run at our A-back uh uh along with Riley Lowry. Riley played some there last year and did an outstanding job. Uh uh then uh we have a tran a kid that transferred in in uh in between uh fall and spring semester, Landon Heitree from Lamar's, and uh he he could give us some help there as well in some short-yarded situations. Really, really not overly huge kid, but really, really strong, one of the strongest kids on the team, really explosive uh between those three guys, and then again, and also Javon Burgeon, who's a sophomore that I think shows tremendous promise. I think he's gonna be, I think he's our running back, our star of the future. Uh, you know, it's gonna be tough to take and get ahead of some of these juniors and seniors this year, but yeah, I think he is I think he's gonna be somebody to really look out for.

So that offense last year, you know, you kind of lined up in the eye formation and said, Casey Thomas is coming, you stop him. You know, there wasn't a whole lot. Everybody in the bar knew that he was getting the ball last year. There might be some benefit to this kind of offense this year. That there's a lot more that I guess teams kind of have to watch out for and play for.

I think we'll be more balanced. Yeah, certainly. And I obviously if you want to be a really effective offense, you have to be balanced. Um, you know, unless you have Casey Thomas. We don't have that too. Those guys don't come around that often. However, with that being said, I think we have a really good stable running backs, and I think we can I think we'll be able to move the ball and be effective this year. Uh it starts up front, and those guys, uh, you know, I I have a lot of faith in them doing a really good job. So uh if they can uh continue to move forward, we've got to get better. We gotta get better. We're a long ways from being a really good team, long, long ways. But offensively, I think we certainly have uh we have prospects to be be okay.

John, on the defensive side of the ball, you know, you lost arguably one of the best linebacking crews in recent history at Healing with Favors Lester, Harper and Allen Meyer. I mean, they were so good. They had across the board and they spread the wealth out so well. But maybe that's the bad news. The good news is you've got maybe one of the elite defensive backfields in the in the state coming back. And uh, you know, that can help while some of those young linebackers grow into their position. Uh thoughts on your defense.

Well, certainly. I think uh as you spoke, I think we have probably two of the best cornerbacks in the state of Iowa with uh with uh JJ and and Grant Whitcomb. Those guys are locked down kind of guys. They're really, really good. Really, really good. Played really, you know, I think Grant might have led three in interceptions last year. JJ is just tough everywhere he plays. He's just a tremendous outstanding athlete. Uh we got Dylan Knapp back at safety in the back end, uh, and then you know the other safety position's a little up for grabs yet, but uh a lot of really tremendous guys that that could fill that spot with like a Jesse Moss or you know, guys that have played football for us. And and along those lines, the same thing with the with the linebackers. We've got some guys that have played some football for us and played meaningful football for us. They just weren't necessarily full-time guys. Uh our our middle linebacker is gonna be Finn Peck. He's uh he's a young guy that's does a really nice job. He I he's really embraced the fact of being our quarterback on defense, essentially. Um I think he's gonna be he's gonna be really good there. Um at that will linebacker, it's that landed high tree and or Aaron Liss. Um both those guys have done an outstanding job. Aaron was a little nicked up during the summertime, but he's back at it full go and really excited for him. Uh taking over the uh the unassuming position of taking over for Casey Thomas is gonna be Bodie Charan, but I think Bodie's gonna do an outstanding job over there on that uh that week, that joker position for us. And then Trent Baker, as of right now, is gonna play our Sam for us, and Trent does a really great job. He's a little undersized, but tough kid, plays hard, pretty smart. Uh, you know, he's he's a backup quarterback too, so he's another kid that's pretty cerebral out there. And uh, you know, just really excited to, you know, get those guys out there. I think uh, you know, it would be remiss to not talk about my guys up front, the guys that I actually coach on a daily basis of the defensive line, but uh you know, we got two or three guys coming back, one of them being Max Asoff. Well, actually both of them, Max Asoff and Nolan Mickey, just really outstanding guys.

You know, Max Max said they name a lot last year.

Max is a returning all-state guy and and rightfully so, and I think Nolan uh uh Nolan's gonna earn that that this year, too. I think he's a really, really good football player. Both those guys have been uh voted captains uh uh along with Grant Wickham and Eli. Uh so uh, you know, those those guys are really respected. Our question mark up front probably is gonna be uh that nose guard position a little bit. We have some uh interesting people to try to uh step up, and you know, one of the guys might be Sebastian Pratt. He's uh he's a sophomore to be. Uh well he's a horse. He's 6'3, 285 pounds, and he can run, he's athletic. Um we're the we're getting them close. I think he's gonna be a really, really good football player for us.

With having those DBs like that are locked down kind of guys, that you don't you can really kind of put them on islands with people and really not worry about them. And having Max up front, because he's Max is gonna cause a whole set of issues for people. What does that allow you to do defense? What can you do defensively, maybe that some other teams can't in that situation with those kind of players?

Well, I can't tell you everything. No, I think don't worry.

Uh it you know, it it there's no secret when you got guys like that that you you can do some different things. We can put some different pressures, some different fronts, and and also you just do some disguising back there as well. Um, you know.

Can you bring the corners a little bit more because those guys can really run it?

We certainly can. Yeah, you know, uh we'll rely, especially Friday night. Our corners are gonna have to be tacklers. You know, uh the uh when you play Sergeant Bluff, man, they're uh they're tough and they make they make all 11 on defense make sure they tackle. And we'll they'll have to do that Friday night. But you know, if you get a uh uh against a more balanced team, uh we'll be able to do some do some different things that we've not necessarily did before, knowing that we feel really comfortable on them being able to cover on the perimeter. Yeah.

And John, uh it's really no time to glide gently into the season with the with with Sergeant Bluff, Lamars, and East right out of the gate. But uh let's focus on Sergeant Bluff here while we got just a minute or two. Uh what are we gonna see from them? Uh Coach Smith does an outstanding job year in, year out, always athletic. Uh tells uh what our listening audience can uh expect to see from them.

Well, they're all you know, Coach Smith does a tremendous job over there. They're always extremely well coached. Uh you can you can be certain of that. They're not gonna beat themselves, and they're gonna play fast and hard, and and they'll get after you. And and they're they're the they just line it up offensively and say try to stop us. Yeah. And and then, you know, there's no secret, they're gonna run the ball, and then they're gonna run it, and they're gonna run it again. And that's just how they are, and they do a really good job. And and uh, you know, their new quarterback, this Ailers kid coming in this year. I haven't seen him play, don't know really much about him other than I heard he's an extremely good athlete. I wouldn't be surprised to see him try to throw a little bit more and use more of their athletes because they have a tremendous amount of them over there on that that are returning. Uh it'll be a handful for us. Uh defensively, they're they're tough. Uh they play a really, really tough kind of 3-3 stack type of defense and bring some safeties from different positions. It's uh, you know, it we'll have our hands full. There's no doubt. They're I think the number two rated team in class four A preseason. Uh I've had seen us rated anywhere from five to ten. I think those guys all might be drunk because I don't I we're not we're a long ways away from the city. It's a Catholic station job. Well under the influence of communion wine, then because uh they uh we're a long ways away. We have the the we have the ability to get there, but we're not a we're not a ranked team as of the today. So but the following comments do not reflect this station.

Real quickly, then we then we gotta get out of here, but uh let you get down there. But the excitement of of Friday nights, this the first one, you only get you only get one like this every year. You know, how special are these these opening nights, and then especially to do it against, let's face it, because SBL's become a rival. Um to do it against a rival like SBL, a top five, that you're not you you won't say it, I'll say it like a top five showdown, opening night. There's just so much pomp and circumstance that goes around a game like this to make it even that much more special. What is it like today for you guys and the and and the players and the coaches?

Well, it's gonna be great. You know, it's uh the atmosphere is gonna be tremendous tonight. There's no doubt. They'll have it'll be the stands will be full. And it's just there's nothing like opening day. You know, it's just uh there's something about it, you know, and we only we're only guaranteed nine of these things, you know. So you the kids take advantage of what they can, but man, it's just it's great to have football back. It seems like we've been working a long time at it, and uh it's just I'm really excited to see these kids get out here tonight and and you know, go and just see what they can do, you know, see what kind of team they can become, because it's all about what they do together. It's not what coaches do, but it's what they can do.

There's just that thing in the air that just says it's opening night. It's just a different feeling, and you gotta love it. It's it's part of that. What makes football so fantastic is to see so many people uh with so high expectations on both sides of the field, and the the fan bases come out for opening night. It's just the towns come out, everybody comes out, the student sections are live in in front of you. You hear the the bluff, the bluff empire victory is ours over there. A little presumptuous on their part, but I mean that that's fine, that's good for them. But you know, the Crusader fan base that their student section has the the neon green look like 1985 over here all over again. It just it's got everything you want, Bob. If you're a player you and you can't get up for this game, you just can't get up for anything.

Yeah, and all that being said, Travis, you gotta remember still, uh, you know, they had the practice game, but in the first game, well, I tell you what, it it always comes down to you take care of the ball, don't don't have the turnovers, don't have the foolish penalties, especially the penalties of bad timing that present bad timing, and uh, you know, do the things that you do well. Uh once you get in that first or second play, it's just football.

But as part of the Dave Peppin pregame show, Bob Geary, you want to run down the starters tonight, the two deep for both the Crusaders and the SBL Warriors.

Absolutely, and these are your projected starting lineups tonight. First of all, Sergeant Bluff, they'll uh start at quarterback number nine, Justin Ahlers. He's a 185-pound junior. Number their fullback will be number 44, Carson Jagger, and a 185-pound senior. Their running backs are on is an outstanding one that ran for big numbers last year. He's number 25, Beckett Veros. He's 185 pounds, he's a load. Uh, number 11, Ryan Houston. Uh, Ryan had an awesome sophomore year. He's back as a senior this year after battling injuries last year, 180 pounds senior. Uh slot back will be Jacoby Cofield. We saw Jacoby on the basketball court last year. He's an extremely athletic kid. He'll start at one of the slot positions. He's number 14. 14, and the wide receiver will be Gavin Arnt, 175 pounds senior. They'll run multiple lineups, so I expect uh several other kids to enter in there. Up front, it's gonna be Kohler, Gus Miller, Herbst, Broderson, and Gonzalez. All those kids weigh between 215 and 245 pounds. Free Crusaders on the offensive end. Uh the starting quarterback tonight is Eli Milkey at 225 pounds senior. Number 22, Dylan Knapps, expected to start at the uh high back position, 165 pound junior. Number 30 is Landon Heitree, 165 pound junior. Number 11, Assir Matumbo with a big 235, 6'5, 235 pound senior, started tight in. Whole lot of human, Bob Geary. Absolutely. The wide receivers are good. They are number one, Grant Wickham, 175 pound senior, and his twin wideout is Prince Wagba, also 175-pound senior up front. A lot of experience there. They're focused on uh the group of Max Asoff, 230 pound senior, Aldo Gonzalez, 225-pound senior, max two, the 250-pound center. Keaton Sweitzer, a 285-pound tackle, and Nolan Mickey, a 240-pound senior. All of those kids had some playing time last year. That should be a strong point for the Crusaders. I think they could have a lot of things. They got encroachment. They got the Crusaders for jumping off sides there, so give them an automatic first as they don't need to go back. And one of the things with with Eli is he's got a very strong arm, but it he throws a lot of bullets, so sometimes the long touch passes maybe are not falling his favor as much as the shorter stuff that we saw earlier. Senior quarterback, junior quarterback Justin Ahlers. 185 pounder, throws left, has a man, and he's absolutely whacked by Wegba as soon as he's caught it, and they bring him down. It's a short gain of probably three, but a nice piece of coverage there is the moment he caught it, he was hit solidly. But it kind of goes to show the size of those guys because it was I believe it was Cofield that made the play, and he got hit pretty well, but he stayed on his feet. It was hard to bring him down.

It almost seemed like two guys were fighting over the football there to get the interception. And so now Healing caught in a third and 15 situation after that big turnover. You'd like to see him do something with it with some momentum, and now look for old number one because he's the guy they've been going to pretty much on every third down play. As we begin a new school year, we need to celebrate the relationship between KFHC Radio 88.1 FM and Bishop Healan Schools. For the next 11 months, in various sports, Sioux and Catholic Radio will broadcast Bishop Healan sports in many avenues. From football to boys and girls basketball to baseball, we will be there every step of the way. Additionally, we provide beginning of the year school lunches to the teachers this week. We're actually going to Sioux Stenner to play the Sioux Fall Stampede coming up on the uh I believe it's the the 11th. Yeah, September 11th. Uh we'll play we'll be playing Stew Falls in Sioux Senter. So it should be a really interesting day there as well to take hockey on the road for some preseason hockey.

Yeah, they the Sioux Senter just built that not too long ago, and it's that's where Dort they have a college hockey team, a club hockey team, and they've done really well here in recent years. And so the Musketeers and Stampede, the Stampede won the USHL quarter cup last year, and wasn't of course it wasn't that long ago when the when when we held the cup for for a year, too. So uh two good teams gonna have it out there in Sioux Center on locations. It'll be fun. But right here it's 14-3 SBL with a lead here at half, and uh you know it really does come as kind of a a blow if if you are if you're a Healing Crusader fan, something that you're gonna look at and go, oh boy, that that that's that's a difference maker is the fact that JJ Hope's in the sideline, he had what appeared to be an arm, you know, a sh a shoulder injury after a big hit, toughed it out, went out there to return the next kickoff, and then got tackled awkwardly and then went to his ankle, and now he's got an ankle problem. So I'd be very surprised. And after that play, we never saw him again. I'd be very surprised if if he's in the lineup tonight. But when you have a game like this, Bob, against a team like Sergeant Bluff that has so many guns and so many weapons, and even the areas that don't have superstars, they have guys that can flat out play. They are so solid across the board. You better have all the bullets in your gun to fire. And JJ and JJ Hope is he's a grenade. You know, and to lose him uh at that at this point right away, that that's that's tough.

Well, I you know, the a couple things they're addressing in that in that locker room. First of all, they're just a few inches away from several big plays. Yes. Uh so the stuff they're using is there. Uh I think probably the biggest concern is getting the plays in. Uh, it's it's been kind of they they had to waste three timeouts just simply with confusion getting the plays from the sideline to the huddle. Yep again, first game, that's that's something that'll that'll show itself. Uh they need to correct that right away. And and secondly, uh communication on defense and and sure tackling. Uh really two big plays there that uh you're kind of surprised happened as good as an experience as that defensive backfield is. Again, their minus hope back there as well. So you're plugging in new pieces here, but uh it's not a dire situation. The Crusaders won the toss, they deferred, they're gonna get the ball first, you know, march it down, put it in, we've got a new new ball game.

This is don't do not think this is not what this is, because you have two coaches that are very good at X's and O's, and this is this will be a chess match in the second half. So if you're the defense from Healing, boy, this you you need you need to put points on the board right away, obviously, but but the other part to that is you you very small room for error defensively uh if if you want to keep keep your offense in the game with a chance to come back.
