Family, and welcome to another edition of Crusader Football here on Catholic Radio. Tonight, we're live from Alwed Olson Field on the campus of Morningside University or Morningside College as the Bishop Heelham Crusaders and the East High Black Raiders resume one of the state's most storied traditions. The Black Raiders, under the direction of Mike Winklepleck, come into tonight's contest ranked in a talented 5A field and posting dominating wins over Sioux City North and Norwalk to open the season. The Black Raiders possess a talented and high-scoring offense led by junior quarterback Callan Cook, who is among the passing leaders in 5A at nearly 280 yards per game through the air while completing an impressive 65% of his throws. His receiving cores among the elite in the state, highlighted by Chris Ford, Tanner Boonstra, and a big tight end target in D1 prospect, Case in Claiborne. When the Black Raiders rush the ball, look for senior Amos Collins and junior Quentin Pollard to get the brunt of the action. Defensively, they're just as good. East physical, they're deep, and they've dominated their first two opponents. The Black Raiders are deep in college prospects and come into the game playing at a very high level. For your Crusaders, who bounced back from a tough season opening loss to Sergeant Bluff Luton, they defeated Lamars last week as the opening part of the season has seen the Crusaders kind of saddled with injuries to many of their top players, including two-way starters J.J. Hope and Landon Heitree. Senior quarterback Eli Milkey spearheads an offense that has had to rely on his passing game while trying to get some more consistency in its running game. A talented receiving core led by Grant Wickham, Prince Wegba, Jesse Maas, and Sue Matumble will need to be productive tonight and keep that Crusader offense on the field and and uh keep that uh very productive East High offense off the field. The Crusader running attack will rely heavily on Junior Dylan Knapp as he replaces High Tree as the key cog in the Crusader running attack. Tonight, alongside Tim Sweden, filling him for Travis Morgan. Travis had some action uh tonight with his hockey uh position. Uh we've got Grace Trav Grace Temp back in the studio. And before Tim and I dig into tonight's ballgame and uh further explore what we're gonna see in the next uh half hour or so, we had a chance to uh sit down earlier this week as Travis Morgan has a chance to talk with Coach uh LaFleur, and here is that interview that took place earlier this week, and uh coach has always had some comments on what we can expect from tonight's ballgame. So here is that interview.

Joined by Healing Head Football Coach John LaFleur, and Coach got a couple games under our belt. What do we know about Healing so far?

Uh well, you know, there's still a lot of question marks out there. I think uh number one can't uh question the kids' uh effort. It's been it's been outstanding the first two weeks. Uh I think we've played two really good football teams, and uh, you know, obviously didn't come out the way we wanted to that first week and uh got a win last week, even though that didn't necessarily play the best. Uh played in some really, really tough conditions. Uh that was about as bad of a night as I can ever remember, and uh as far as you know the heat and humidity and lack of air and all that stuff. And uh but uh I you know I I I think we're we're we're still learning, still growing, still getting better. Um, you know, offensively we gotta get better. We gotta be able to run the ball more consistently. Uh gotta be able to get the ball to our guys in space, uh our playmakers, uh on a more consistent basis. But uh those are all things that I think we're gonna continue to get better through the course of the season and on a week by week basis.

So gotta get better pretty fast because tonight uh you're gonna face a monster in Sioux City East that has athletes kind of littered all over the all over the football field, a lot of speed, a lot of size. Uh but if there's anybody that can match up with those wide receivers out there, uh you like to think that your defensive backfield can, uh maybe the best they can in in the in the state. Uh you know, you got you're loaded back in the in the defensive backfield, but that's gonna be an absolute war between those wide receivers and your defensive backs. If you're a college football coach, you're sending your kids, you're you're sending your scouts to watch this football game because that's that's that's good on good right there.

They've got a they've got a tremendous amount of uh explosive athletes on their side of the ball. And uh, you know, if you I've told a couple people already, if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile. Yeah. You know, uh because because of their speed. And um we just we have to do a really good job of tackling in space and and uh just uh executing what our what our coverages are. And uh I I think we I think we've done a really good job this week working on that. Uh that that's been a bugaboo the last couple of weeks, is is missing some tackles and giving up big plays. Uh, you know, in in both the Sergeant Bluff and Lamar's game, we've we've given up we've missed a couple tackles, which in have in turn turned into touchdowns. And you know, uh those can't happen, especially against a team as talented as Cista's.

Is it harder to to teach and coach tackling now, John, than maybe it was 10 or 15 years ago where you line up guys, you had them hit, there was a lot of contact. There's maybe not as much contact in practices now as as maybe there was, because maybe you are concerned about getting guys hurt and things like that.

I don't I don't know. Uh maybe other people would practice it that way, but we don't. Um we're we're physical. And and and and and what that's what you know makes uh makes a coach really want to like uh maybe go to the liquor store because uh what we I I'm gonna do in practice. I'm certain that there's no team in the in the state of Iowa that's practiced tackling more than we have through the course of the summer, preseason, and early season so far. And uh to see us miss a tackle here and there, um, that just drives me crazy. Um but we you know we went back to the the well this week and we've worked tackling every day. We're gonna continue to work tackling every day because uh if you want to play good defense, you have to be able to tackle well. And and we'll keep the kids will keep getting better. They're there, like I said, their effort is always there. Uh, can't ever fault them for that. So we just have to execute.

You won ugly, as you as you said last week. What did you learn from Matt Loss last week in Coach?

Uh I think we can overcome things in adversity when we don't play the way we want to and still end up with a win. You know, I I was you know upset uh Friday night, and you know, after looking at the film, we're not off by a lot.

It's never quite as bad as it looks.

SPEAKER_18 7:32

No, you know, I I never I initially wanted to throw up everywhere, and then I didn't, you know, watch the film, and I only kind of wanted to throw up in a few places. So um, you know, it it uh we're just off in a few sp spots. And and we if we clean those things up, I think we're gonna look better and on both sides of the ball. Um, you know, and really happy with our special team so far. I think we've done a really nice job with our kicking, our kicking game has been good. Uh it will be tested uh Friday night for sure. Uh with uh you know that Ford kid is about as good as there is in the country. So we'll we'll we'll uh we'll have to once again tackle well, uh execute on that level. But uh, you know that we're a work in progress, no doubt. Uh we're not a polished uh team, but we're we're getting better. And I I ideally, you know, these these out of district play games are you know they're a good measure to find out where you are and what you need to improve on because ultimately, you know, what we want to do is, you know, our our main goal is winning a state championship at the three A level. So uh, you know, we got to be able to win our district, and that starts in a couple weeks yet.

So is it important for you to step up and weight class though in the preseason? Like I that I mean, you're you're you're a middleweight playing against a heavyweight now, you know, in Sioux City East. You also went up against against a very good top three team in in Sergeant Bluff in Fora. So do you like that schedule to the point where you're gonna keep something like that where you're playing bigger schools that are rivals at the beginning of the year pretty consistently?

SPEAKER_18 9:00

Uh yeah, like and dislike both at the same time. You know, uh honestly, if if if the if the environment, the weather early in the year wasn't as harsh as it was, yeah, um, you know, football just comes out, it's a numbers game. And and we have a a a whole lot of guys that play both ways. And you get into a 4A and 5A school, and they they had the luxury of not having to do that. You know, they just they have more guys. Yeah. And it it becomes uh, you know, it it it it's just uh guys get wor out.

You know, and they're going both ways. Like peep people that are listening at home right now, you probably don't may maybe you do, maybe you don't understand, but I I always kind of try to explain it to them if you're listening at home. Guys at the Healum, you gotta how many guys are going both ways for you?

SPEAKER_18 9:43

Yeah, I think we got we got about seven guys, I think, that are going both ways. And then several other kids.

And you only have eleven on the field, folks.

There's probably eleven out there. You know, and we also have several other kids that aren't necessarily full-time starters but they're playing both ways. But playing both ways. I think we've got, you know, probably about 14 kids that are pretty much our main players, you know. Uh and and that so it's you know uh especially the offensive and defensive line. Yeah.

You know, I mean that's that's a war down there.

It's tough. It's tough. But you know, like I said, our kids have always kind of rose to the challenge and embraced that. And it it's it's you know, uh we're always gonna play East. It's because it's it's East. You know, and uh that's that and that's fine. And and I think we, you know, by playing up, we find out how good we need to be in a in a hurry.

Let's talk about this East rivalry a little bit and what it means to you as a as a guy that played in it, as a guy that's now coached in it, and as it's been in the thick of it. What is the East rivalry, if you if you had to explain it to somebody, what how would you explain it to them what this means, what it does, what what kind of fire it lights, all of it. Like what does this East rivalry mean to both teams?

SPEAKER_18 10:46

Well, you know it's it's good for the city, it's good for the schools, you have to have rivalries in sports, you know, and uh makes the world go round. Absolutely, you know, and we got a big one this week in a college too with Iowa State, you know. And so do you hate 'em? I don't know if hate's the really the word. You know, I I I don't mind seeing them do well outside of one week out of the year, you know. And it uh I don't know, you know. Um it was probably maybe a little more of a heated rivalry when we played uh because we were in the same class, same level. We played our played each other, you know, more it meant there was something on the line. More times than not, you know, we would play each other twice in a year, we'd play each other in the regular season and then face each other again in the opening round of playoffs. And uh fortunately for us, we when I was there, we ended up taking care of business there. It's kind of like when we played Iowa State at Iowa. I took care of business there as well. But uh Can I bring up the 99 Rascorn Oscars real quick? Well, I didn't get a chance to play them, Travis. So uh you did not uh and I I would have given anything to do that. But anyway, uh that's another story entirely.

But it it is a different game, though, coach, because I mean you can't it it's not like you're playing, you know, uh Unity Christian or something like that. It it's different. This game means something more to you, it means something more to the players, and and for you to walk up to them and tell them this is just another game on Monday, I know that you that you know that's not gonna fly with them.

Yeah, well the kids understand, you know, uh you don't have to uh if anything, you mean you need to kind of temper their emotions because they understand how big a game this is, and it they've they've shown that in practice this week. And I'm I'm certain it's like that way over on the east side of town as well. You know, I'm sure those guys, you know, uh Coach Winklepleck is the is a healing grad, and he played for healing, so he understands the the nature of the rivalry, and I'm sure he's uh uh letting those guys know as well how important it is. And we'll we'll just you know, uh ultimately when it gets down to it, it's all about blocking and tackling when we get out on the field, and it's good it's good natured for the guys uh for the fans to talk about, but uh for us it's you know we gotta go play football.

They're gonna throw it, they're gonna throw it a lot. They got three of the best wide receivers out there in the state. They got a quarterback that's big, strong, can throw it too. Um how do you slow this down or or what is is that that's gotta be the concern. I mean that that's what that's what's facing. This team is gonna line up and they're gonna throw the football all night long.

Absolutely. Uh we can't give up big plays. It's that simple. You know, um if they we'll we'll be content to let them uh try to dink and dunk down the field and tackle and uh and that's tough too, because like I said, you know, they they throw a lot of bubbles and quick hitches and those type of things, and uh, you know, they then they make a guy miss and they're gone. So uh don't give up the big play, stop the run. And uh, you know, if if they're you know they're good enough that they want to take and you know drive the ball down on a 17-play drive, good for them. Uh we'll we'll we'll play uh we'll play defense and and see what they can do. And uh you know, um it's gonna be a challenge, but uh I I think our guys are up for it.

JJ Hope. I think that has been a massive people don't maybe understand uh how big of a loss that is for you when he's not in the lineup. He's not been there two weeks, and you've had some struggles. Um we talked about that kind of domino effect. It's a big domino with J with JJ Hope. I mean, he's probably one of the best top three or four return men in the state. Um a fantastic defensive back, wide receiver. I mean, he is a big play specialist. Um how big has it been to not have him in there and is he gonna play tonight?

SPEAKER_18 14:11

Uh we're counting on him playing tonight, sure. Uh I think it would we'd have to uh you know tie him down. With wild horses, yeah. I mean, he uh he said I don't I'm playing where irregardless. And I was like, well, well, you know, and he said, I'm playing. So I and I he he he's looked pretty good, he's he's been able to go, and uh I think he's gonna be in good spot. So but yeah, it it hurts a lot missing him. He's just uh when one you know we don't have we're not blessed with an extraordinary amount of depth. So when one guy goes down, we start plugging in play putting people in other spots and it and and confusion starts setting in and and familiarity and all those things. And you know, uh if we were to able we're able to get JJ back and kind of get back to what you know what we're familiar with, I think we'll uh the kids' confidence will be will be much higher as well.

ASOF and Mickey, those guys are gonna have a massive role in this football game tonight. Um because of the fact that they're gonna need you're gonna need to pressure that quarterback. You're gonna get you have to get to him. Those are two guys that can do it. Talk about that that matchup a little bit. Those your your your defensive line, that offensive line, uh that's probably we say it a thousand times, uh, you know, that's usually where it's one. It's probably gonna be one there again, because if you can get pressure on the quarterback, it's gonna make life a heck of a lot easier.

SPEAKER_18 15:23

Absolutely. And it's you know, it's tough to get pressure with them too, because they're uh they're a the ball gets out quick with them. Yeah, so we you know, uh, but we're not because of their offensive scheme, we're not able to bring a lot of pressure uh outside with you know the guys from the backfield or linebackers or whatever, because the ball gets out so fast and because of who they have on the perimeter. So you're right, those guys are gonna have to get there, and and we've challenged them to that. And also we're gonna have to get our, you know, we're gonna get in the passing lanes and try to get some deflections as well. Uh Koch's got a unique uh delivery style, kind of a little bit of a sidearm kind of side bender kind of guy where the ball comes out a little lower. So hopefully, if we can get uh kind of disrupt some of those passing lanes, we'll be in good shape.

Tell me this Healan wins tonight if they can do these two things well and win.

Uh we gotta be able to run the ball offensively and don't give up the big play on defense.

Football's simple, guys. I keep telling people that all the time. It's it's simple, made complicated by dumb men like me.

John, you're not dumb. I'm the dumb one of this group. Come on, you should know that. Uh last couple questions, and then we'll get we'll let you go. But just the excitement that that for you to to coach in this game, what what's the can you tell me about the difference between playing in it and coaching in it, or is it really kind of the same? Uh coaching is a lot worse.

The heartburn is the heartburn and the worry and headache. You're playing, heck, man. You just put you put the pads on and you strap the helmet up and go out and go.

And you don't have to worry about yourself, right?

SPEAKER_18 16:49

That's right. You know, you trust your teammates are gonna do their job and you go out and do it. Coaching, bruh, man, it's uh you don't sleep. I don't sleep a lot from you know August to November. And uh uh I don't know if my my wife thinks I'm not very nice, but uh Katie bless her soul, you know. Yeah, she's she's a saint saint.

Um last question. This rivalry means a lot to both teams, but because it's not a district game, does it kind of take some of the glitter off of it a little bit, you think?

SPEAKER_18 17:29

Well, I don't think so. You know, okay it's it's still healing east, and uh and I I'm certain, you know, it's not gonna be as hot, so we're the weather's gonna be decent. We I I would bet we'll have a uh a tremendous crowd. Uh and uh, you know, it's uh I think the fans hate each other more than the kids probably do. Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'd agree with that. Yeah, there's a lot of East people don't like think much about healing, and I think there's probably vice versa. You know, healing people don't think much about East. Uh the kids, you know, heck, these kids in town know everybody, you know, it's social media's brought that apart.

So is that different from what it used to be, or has it always been that way?

SPEAKER_18 18:02

Well, you you know, you used to kind of know some of those guys across town, but you serious heck never hung out with them. And and now they, you know, with Snapchat and TikTok and God knows whatever else they have out there, you know, they're all seem to know each other.

Yeah, I mean, it's uh it's different for sure. But uh uh, you know, there's still some animosity, maybe a little bit, but uh I think it's all good natured and and uh it'll be a fun game.

But you gotta remember, East High is a much larger school than Healan is right now, and and has a much larger quantity of players than Healen does right now. So I think it's gonna be really, really key that number one, Healen extends some drives. If we have a lot of three and outs, this could be a long night. And the other thing is they need to make sure, as John stated during his pregame show, they got a tackle well. Because these boys, you miss one tackle, they're on the race.

Well, you know, Tim, this is really a culmination of a kind of a vicious three-game swing here to start the season. A very good Sergeant Bluff team on the road. Uh last week Lamars came into Memorial Field, and then here today, you know, the best of the three. Uh this is this is an East High team that uh Coach Winkelpleck has been building for quite a while, and they are loaded with talented B1 prospects across the board, and uh it's gonna be very interesting to see what kind of uh what kind of scheme that uh Coach LaFleur and his staff come up with to stop that. And I think John made a very good comment in his talk with Travis in that, you know, they've got to force a long drive, they've got to keep stay away from from the big plays. And well, easier said than done, because uh they are full of horses around the perimeter, and uh not only that, uh Callin Cook, their junior quarterback, is just having an amazing year. He's uh throwing for 260 yards a game, six touchdowns to no interceptions, uh finding, you know, keeping all of his uh bevy of receivers happy. Uh he's spreading the wealth tremendously there, and uh quite honestly Callan's a just a sensational quarterback and really one of the premier ones in five A.

I want to take you back oh, probably two months. This Group, many of the same, were on that East High baseball team that was largely successful all summer. They won a lot of games. And you know, that confidence builder, that winning the games, even if it's in a different sport, really makes a difference as you carry into that next sport. They feel like, you know, we've won some games, we know how to win, we've been in competitive games, we know how to take that next step. And there you're gonna find a lot of the one of the things that we're very lucky to do is broadcast baseball summer, and I was there for a bunch of it. And a lot of these names are familiar. A lot of these names are are duplicates off that baseball team. So they've had a lot of success.

You know, kind of a maybe a a little bit of a unique pass it is really both these teams are kind of built first and foremost around their passing game. It's I think both of them would love to run the ball more and better than they are currently, but the bottom line is they're both gonna put it up in the air. And I tell you what, that East High receiving core of uh Chris Ford, Tanner Boonstra, uh Case and Claiborne, I mean th those dudes, you know, when they catch the ball, you better, as you said earlier, you better be a sure tackler because uh they'll they'll break a tackle and they'll be gone. And and each of those three guys is gonna play at the next level, as will Callum Cook and you know, uh several of these guys. And then when they go to the running game, uh it doesn't really drop off that much. They don't run it a lot, but uh kids like Amos Collins, who's averaging just under five yards a carry, and uh Quentin Pollard uh is averaging over five yards a carry. You know, when they get the rock in their hands, uh they do some good things by way of of being on the ground. So it is an explosive team, and uh as much as you like to talk about their offense, their defense is every bit as impressive.

They've only played two games this year, but they've only given up three points. So I mean they play good tackling defense. They I can't tell you the quality of the opposition because it's still pretty early in the year to be able to define if those were really good teams or not. But they they don't give much up. Three points is all they've given up in two games, so as much as everybody should be very, very weary wary, let's call it, of the outside speed, they also need to be wary of this team will hold you up very quickly.

Well, and and tonight, uh, you know, it's you know, on paper uh i i it it's tough to to not say that East is a pretty prohibitive favorite, yet this is a rivalry. This game means a lot to the kids, and this Bishop Healing group is very well coached, and they're still looking to play their best ball. I I think uh in talking to John over the course of the first two games, he's kind of disappointed with some of the things they they've done, expected maybe they'd be a little farther ahead, but again, the injury bugaboo uh with uh with uh JJ as well as uh losing high tree uh this week in practice, you know, injuries like that when your team's not very deep, i they they just really not only hurt your team performance but slow down your team development.

You gotta remember we've had a little history with that. Remember last year during the finals, Casey Thomas got hurt a little bit, and that was uh uh a problem that we dealt with as we dealt into the playoffs throughout the time. So we hope we can get some of these kids back. God willing, nobody else gets hurt, but it's just one of those things where they have to work their way through their injuries. Some of them will come back, some of them I think are probably done for the year. So it's just it's gonna be a matter of managing a very limited roster, which John has is a very limited roster.

And yet, in talking to the kids at school today, they're very confident that they they've got a scheme that can do just that, and uh they're expecting uh this to be a great ball game, as are we. And with that, we have our opening kickoff. The Crusaders take it back to the 20. We're going to start to tonight's ballgame. It was nicely done as Knapp Remels on for six yards. Good opening play for the Crusaders, taking it right up the middle. And one of the things that Tim that's maybe been talked about is the line play of East versus the line play of Healing. I I think it's it's quite a matchup there, and this Healing line has a chance tonight to really do some special things. Six yards on that opening carry. I am sure that John got their attention this week.

First minute of the ball game here, and we've got our first snap. Violation is uh not sure uh I think we had to delay a game called on the Crusaders uh immediately. Coach LaFleur's out there challenging that, and we're just gonna see what's happened because the play clock didn't match necessarily up with what uh was going on in the field, and it looks like uh Coach LaFleur might lose this argument. They're gonna march off five, so it's gonna bring up second down now and nine. A big penalty early on for the Crusaders.

You know, we talked earlier about the keys to the game. The keys to the game is gonna be playing it clean, very few penalties, very few turnovers, and and extending drives. Don't I think that's gonna be very, very important for the Crusaders.

Second down and nine for the Crusaders as they break huddle. They're gonna send receivers wide on both sides, eye formation as Milky calls his starting count, looks over the Black Raider defense. He's gonna spin, hand off to Knapp. Knapp's gonna go up the middle, limited gain there, two yards for Knapp, eight yards on two carries now for Mr. Knapp. It's gonna bring up a big third down and eight for the Crusaders here. Minute and a half into tonight's ball game, and on your Security Bank scoreboard, there is no score as of yet. As the Crusaders are gonna quickly break huddle. They're gonna go with four receivers to the left, an empty backfield, one to the right as Milky looks over. And uh, Tim, you know, John's gonna run this play clock down pretty low every time. You know, one of the things he talked about maybe was shortening the game a little bit, and we're seeing that already. It's a kind of a delicate thing to get that play in. But uh play is in, calls a starting count. He's gonna drop back. He looks to his left, he finds an open receiver. That's Jesse Moss, and he's gonna have first down yardage. We'll give him 11 on the reception. Really nice route by Moss. Very nice delivery by Milkey, and uh, Crusaders get their initial first down as they're uh moving that clock here. No huddle for the Crusaders. They're gonna rush up to the line, and uh I think we're gonna see a lot of this empty backfield, Tim, with uh four receivers, and they're trying to isolate that receiver to the right. In this case, it's Prince Wagba.

They're just staying with this same formation, and that might be to try and limit some of the substitutions that uh East High brings out. 8-18 to go here in quarter number one. Crusaders on their initial drive of the night find themselves at the uh Crusader 41-yard line facing a third down, and we'll call it a uh short three or long two. Four receivers to the left, one to the right. Milky calls his count. He's gonna take it right up the middle again. He slides off to the side, stretches the ball out, and it's gonna be just short.

So a very promising Crusader drive ends with a fumble and a return for a touchdown by the East High Black Raiders as with 6.25 to go here in the first quarter. They grab the early lead at 6-0 as Waggers comes on to attempt the PAT. Once again, a 33-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by the Black Raiders. Open the scoring in tonight's ballgame. The kick is up by Wagger, and it's right through the middle. 7-0. Crusaders here, 625, halfway through quarter number one, as Crusaders give up uh the big play on the turnover, and uh East High responds with the quick touchdown. And welcome back, everyone. Bob Gary alongside Tim Swedeen. As the Crusaders uh boy, I tell you, Tim, they had a really promising drive going there. They worked their way through three first downs, and then uh in shotgun formation, Milky uh couldn't handle the snap. He went down with the ball, it was jarred loose, and the uh East Tide Black Raiders scooped it up and went the distance. That was Landon Monk, the junior defensive lineman, getting the 33-yard touchdown off the fumble recovery. And early on here, it's the East Tide Black Raiders seven, the Crusaders nothing on your security national bank scoreboard as Wagger puts foot to ball, drives it deep toward the end zone. It's gonna be into the end zone for a touchback. Crusaders now with their second possession of the game. And and Tim, they're gonna have to have a short memory here.

Three things that I saw during that first drive. Number one, it appears as though they're gonna try to really rely on Eli to do running. They're gonna try to make sure that as a big quarterback he can he can run with the ball. Secondly, they're gonna spread the offense, they're gonna bring the receivers out wide, they're gonna go four, five people wide, hopefully to spread the defense out and take their take the defensive tacklers outside the box. The last thing is, you're right. John is doing a really good job of milking that clock. Bringing down every play clock down as far as he can go.

Boy, it's heartbreaking to be halfway through the quarter and uh not giving the East High Black Raiders the ball yet and still trail as the Crusaders go off center. That's uh Bergen with the carry there. He's gonna get two yards out of that I formation, a little a little uh ISO off the left or off the left side of the line. Uh short gain for the Crusaders is gonna bring up second down and eight. That's uh Bergen's first carry of the night. Again, he's kind of forced into duty now with the injury bug to uh both Lowry and High Tree. Uh it's a very depleted running core for the Crusaders as they face now a second down and eight.

One of the things that I've seen so far from these defense is number 52, that Landon Monk has been very active. He's involved in a lot of tackles already so far.

Milky now, two receivers to each side, solo back, short drop back, throws it out, and there's going to be a pick six as he threw it right into the hands of number six, Carter Maudlin, is who he threw it into the hands of. Wow, and uh I tell you what, Carter just sat on that out route there near the 22-yard line, and boy, something very unique that you don't see very often in football is that the Crusaders face a two-touchdown deficit, and the other team's offense has not yet touched the ball. Boy. Just uh, you know, trying to hit a quick out route there on a three-step drop on second and long, and Modlin sat right on that, right on that receiver, picked it off and took it the last 22 yards in for the catch touchdown. On to kick the extra point. Once again, his wagger, it's up and it's through, and just like that with 534 to go here in the first quarter of the Crusaders trail, the East High Black Raiders 14 to nothing.

Maudlin really baited him on that. I I think he was just waiting, waiting for that pass to come because it looked like he was just ready to intercept that ball no matter where it came. It seemed like he was just hanging around the receiver, not really in front of him, just hanging around him, and and he perfectly timed it to pick it off.

Kick is in the air, it's gonna be into the end zone once again as Wagger, the outstanding sophomore kicker for East Eye, puts it into the end zone, and the ball's gonna be brought out to the Crusader 20 as the Crusaders now will begin their third drive of the evening. The first two drives kind of ended in disaster. One with a fumble recovery for a touchdown. On the other with a 25 yard yard uh INT for a touchdown. Again, the uh East High Black Raider offense, that vaunted offense, has yet to take the field, and and they find themselves up 14 to nothing. So here come the Crusaders, a little tighter formation this time, two backs, Milky in the shotgun, one receiver to the left. That's Wickham. Little inside trap handoff given to Knapp. Knapp with a nice run there. He's gonna get five yards on the rush. And uh Dylan Knapp's looked good so far, Tim.

He has, he has looked really good so far. And I think Bergen has two, but it's just gonna be a matter of patience. We're not gonna be I don't think we're gonna get a lot of home runs off this defense. No. I think we're gonna have to patiently move the ball down the field. Even though we have a 14-0 deficit, we need to patiently move the ball down the field.

And I think you're gonna find Coach LaFleur being a little more conservative with this drive, just based on what happened with the first two drives, is second down now and five. Shotgun formation, handoffs and inside handoff to Knapp. Knapp's gonna go up the middle off the right side, pick up two. It's gonna bring up a third down and three now for the Crusaders. Knapp already with four carries for 15 yards, and the Crusaders with yet another third down opportunity here. 438 to go on your Security National Bank scoreboard. Again, it's the East Eye Black Raiders 14 and the Crusaders nothing.

Nice delivery, nice job by Grant Wickham there to get the first down for the Crusaders.

You know the funny part of this is obviously East High is in the Morningside part of Sioux City. But a lot of these Heathen players are from the Morningside part of Sioux City as well. So they they know each other through friendships, through neighborhoods. So it's really more of a connection than maybe any other school might have.

And you've seen, I think, Tim, seen some of that rivalry kind of evolve into the Sergeant Bluff rivalry and so forth. This first down and 10 by the Crusaders. And I tell you, Tim, I I think the offensive line has done a pretty good job of creating some initial holes there. Uh the running game has been fairly successful here. Uh, just an outstanding run, and uh, I tell you what, Chris Ford is the real deal when it comes to returning the football. Looking directly into the the sun setting to his west, he took it.

He took it at about the 30 of his own and ran it down to about the 13. So we're talking probably a fifty-seven yard punt return. So I he's the real deal. I mean he he does a wonderful job of making people miss, and he does a real really good job of of accelerating and then decelerating. He he really knows how to make people miss.

So, interesting enough, uh here in the red zone, uh they've gone to the ground the first two plays of this series. They face a third down and five from deep in Crusader territory as Cook looks over to his coaching staff to get the play. They're gonna go with Ford in a wide slot right. Now they dance uh Collins around to his left. There's Ford in motion, and there's an inside pitch to come to Ford, and he's gonna get down near first down territory and drag the Crusaders all the way down to the one-yard line. Just a little shuttle pass there, gets them eight yards on it. We'll give uh Ford the reception there from Cook, and it's gonna set up a first and goal from just outside the Crusader one-yard line.

East Eye faces a second down and goal from just outside the Crusader 4. Uh this drive was set up by a great uh punt return by Chris Ford. There's Collins, or there's uh Cook rolling to his right. He's gonna slip the ball in, and it's gonna be a touchdown there. Is number seven, Cooper Fritz with the touchdown. I believe there's a little taunting by Fritz. It's gonna be flagged by the officials. That'll be a dead ball penalty, but uh the completion goes for a touchdown there as Cook with the four-yard touchdown completion to Cooper Fritz. Just an easy little roll out for Cook, and uh he made the easy pass there, easy touchdown there for the Black Raiders. And now the officials are determining whether it's going to be marked off on the extra point, I believe, or the kickoff. I believe they have that option. So two defensive touchdowns and a return touchdown for the Black Raiders have fueled this 27-3 lead here with 328 to go in the quarter. He's touched the ball from scrimmage, I think, one or two times, but he's got a 57-yard point return and now a 75-yard kickoff return. So he's got 132 yards worth of special teams yardage just by himself. He's an amazing young man.

Once again, uh Tim will have uh Heelum's outstanding volleyball coach on at half, as also we'll have a statistical breakdown. And you know, you're I'm looking at the I'm looking at the play sheet here, Tim. The Black Raiders have ran less than ten plays in this entire game. Now, if somebody would have told you that before the game, you would have said, My goodness, this is this is a ball game.

And Dylan Knapp, the outstanding junior running back, finished the deal. 28-10 Crusaders on your score on your Security National Bank scoreboard. Short kick is going to fall into the hands of number 12, Brody Wagger. And Wagger's got a wall on the right side. He's going to go for a long return there. We're going to give him field of that ball near the 26-yard line. He's going to get 34 yards on the return there. And once again, an outstanding special teams play by the East Tide Black Raiders puts them in a very short field situation. Ball spotted at the Crusader 43-yard line. So Wagger, who's so far tonight, shown a lot of kicking prowess. Shows a little return prowess there. We know there's a lot of athleticism in that kid. Ball spotted on the right hash mark as they go right to left. Three receivers to left, two to the right. Cook calls his count. He's going to drop back. He's rolling to his left. I think we're going to have a holding call as Cook scrambling around, being chased by Max Asoff. Finally, Aesoff lunges at his feet. Now Cook breaks a couple tackles. He's on the loose. He's going to get back near the first down before he's finally brought down. But I think it's going to be all for not. As I thought I saw some laundry there with a holding call.

Max Asoff, the big uh defensive lineman for the Crusaders, was hot in pursuit. He broke Max's tackle, got himself all the way up near the first down, but uh just shy of that first down, as we'll give him uh six yards on that carry, but it's gonna be first and ten for the Crusaders. Now 41 seconds to go. Let's see what Coach has in mind here. Is he gonna try and stretch the issue there, trailing 28-10 here again? 41 seconds left in the half. One timeout remains, excuse me, two timeouts remain for the Crusaders. Milky's gonna drop back. He's gonna roll out, throws it out the middle, it's picked off. An ill-advised throw picked off by Claiborne, and he's gonna return it down to the 23-yard line with 31 seconds to go. And that's just a pass you can't throw in that situation, as Claiborne coming out of his linebacker position, baits uh Milky into the throw, and it's an INT. The second of the night for uh Milky, and it's gonna give the Black Raiders the ball here with 23 seconds to go, or with 31 seconds to go at the Crusader 23-yard line.

Actually, pretty good uh pretty good coverage by Finn Peck, but uh Mr. Cook delivered it right on the money, and uh Wagger caught it, went in the end zone. And now he's aboard to kick the extra point here. Snap is up, kick is good, and uh with that and twenty-four seconds left, it's the Crusaders trailing the East Tide Black Raiders 35 to 10.

He returned it down to the 25, and one play later the East Side Black Raiders are back in the end zone. Really very few plays ran by the Black Raiders tonight. Uh unofficially, I have them at just uh 11 offensive plays, and yet they find themselves leading 35 to 10 here with 24 ticks left in the first half.

As we've talked about, special teams and turnovers have made the difference in this game. And uh, you know, it's it's really a compliment to Healing because they've moved the ball relatively well against the East defense. But the mistakes have hurt.

I know you got a master's degree, I know that you've done a wonderful job. You played at Simpson. You've done a wonderful job of bringing this together, and you're also a teacher in the Healing system. So mine took three years of Spanish, but as far as I go, it's Como Seyamo. So that's the best I can do.

So first of all, I know you weren't Norwalk Flock for a while. Contrast your time at Norwalk versus Healen, the two teaching systems. Do you feel like it's different?

SPEAKER_26 1:45:08

Um Yes. When I was there, Norwalk was a great program, but they were coming off of a just a really rocky stretch of getting a coach to stay. So they didn't have a solid background, and now they've had a coach there for a while, and he's done a great job there. But Healan, they were kind of in that same boat, but they've always had such a great pedigree of volleyball. It's just they've always been there. And growing up in Iowa, everyone knows Bishop Healan volleyball, you know, one of the top teams in the state every single year. And so it's been great to be able to be a part of that um history, that past, and be able to build upon what is already there, that foundation, and keep going with it.

You have kind of a combination. You have some seniors, but you also have some young people. I know one of the things you're you're inaugurating is a freshman center, which is kind of un unusual, but I also know the kid. She's a very good player. So I how is that working as far as the seniors leading the younger kids? And as far as the mesh between the seniors and the young leaders?

Yeah, so our seniors were there, they were on the team when we won state there in 2024, and so they were a part of that. Melina Snoozy played a big part in that, and Tara and Emma were on the sidelines there cheering them on, and so they know what it takes. They were around a great team, a great pro um under Lauren as a great coach, and they they know what it takes, and they're able to bring in that our freshman crew and our young kids and and help them just know and be there and be a part of what Healand volleyball is and um show them what it takes to win.

There are usually two coaching philosophies, at least from what I've seen. I I've watched a lot of volleyball growing up, but I haven't really done a whole lot as far as actual playing. Do you tailor your system to the players you have, or do you make the players fit your system?

SPEAKER_26 1:46:54

I think as a high school coach, you have to tailor your system to the players you have. You can only bring in or you can only do so much of what you have. Right. I know everyone maybe this isn't the best time to say this, everyone thinks we all recruit, we bring in everybody, you know, Bishop Healing, but we don't. And our kids are Catholic school kids. And so we have to tailor what we to our program to what they can do. And our system is built around what our players are able to do. And I ha I I like to bring in what I have done in the past, but it doesn't always work. Every year it's not always successful, and so you have to change things to fit the team that you have at that time. And I think most high school programs you have to do that. It's not a college, you can't recruit and bring in girls.

So you know, one of the things that I've always thought about as I watch volleyball is the undercurrent of what's taking place. So obviously, if you don't have a good pass, the world doesn't come out very well. One of the things that I think is very underrated is blocking. Do you work a lot with your middles on blocking?

Uh yes and no. We always do we do split defense. So we'll have one court working on defense, one court working on blocking. Um blocking is so much more reading than it is something you can teach. So it's not a physical skill. It's a hard physical skill to teach. Yes, there are techniques to it, and yes, there are things you can tell the girls what to do, but they have to be able to read the set, read the pass, read the hitter, read where the ball's going, know who's go know what is across the net from them. And so the more volleyball you play, the better at blocking you get. And that's why playing is important.

So is in watching teams, I mean, do you do a good job of watching previous teams the current opponent has played to see where they flow with their blocks or where they go with their hits? Kind of.

SPEAKER_26 1:48:48

Yeah, so I will watch film or if we're in a tournament, I'll try and sit and watch the teams that we're going to play and see where they line up, what their hitters consistently do, if they are consistently hitting cross or line, and then when we come to play them, now I know as a coach what to tell the girls. Okay, they they're gonna tip here, they're gonna hit down the line. Maybe their defense is stays back or their middle back stays back, but their left back might stay up or something along those lines. There's a lot of different defensive strategies in volleyball. And again, it just depends on the team that you're playing. But yeah, we like to watch those teams and see what they do and watch film. Especially I like uh love now that our conference has gone gone to Huddle School because we can watch all of our games, all of our conference foes and see what they do.

I think that's a really fantastic thing as well. You've done a really good job of stacking up competition on the weekends. And I think this w coming weekend is gonna be maybe a little difficult for you as you head into Des Moines. So is that what you're trying to do is get as many strong teams in front of you as you can so that when it gets down the tournament trail you have an opportunity to really play the quality opponent?

SPEAKER_26 1:50:00

Yeah, we love to play quality opponents now so we can see what we need to work on, and then when regionals and districts come, we know what we need to get better at. And if we do that now at the beginning of the season, we're not so much rushing to get it done when tournament time comes. Uh and it's just conference play is it's nice, but we only get that one match a week. So we have to build on our tournament schedule.

Again, I think it's really important to celebrate the coaches as well as the teachers within the Healing system. They're all very dedicated. And I think it's a very important point to have as many coaches in the building as teachers as coaches. I think that's a really connection that needs to be had.

Well, getting back to the the football game tonight, really one of the most unique stat lines I I can remember having in a lot of years of watching football, the East Black Raiders with just 51 total offensive yards, and yet they lead the Crusaders 35 to 10. Crusaders with uh fairly productive first half uh offensively, 169 total yards, 134 through the air, 35 on the ground. But again, it has been the big plays by the defense and special teams for the East Tide Black Raiders. Uh they've just taken advantage of every mistake that the Crusaders have made and uh have really uh allowed themselves to have this cushion they have here at halftime.

And uh that following week, the first week of uh district play will also be homecoming activities at Bishop Healing.

So and the and that'll be a key game because that's within the district, and that game is Sioux Center, and Sioux Center is a quality team. So I think I think that game against Sioux Center two weeks from tonight will be a very important as far as where that lands us in the district. It can't be lost on the fact that two out of these first three games, this is the third game, we've played a very good Sgt. Bluff team and for the most part played them even in East tonight, which is a very good 5A team. So we're playing schools that are bigger than us, and honestly, that they were very projected to have a quality team. So honestly, some of this may not be unexpected because we're facing really good quality teams, but I just think this second half kickoff is gonna be key because it's gonna give us the opportunity to maybe get a stop right away. And and we've uh uh haven't been uh uh uh uh uh too badly beaten up by the regular offense. We've been beaten up by special teams, is where we've been beaten up.

There's no doubt about it. But but let's look at the big picture here. Ten points against Sergeant Bluff, 17 points against Lamar's, ten points here against East. As an average, it comes to all three games. We're averaging like twelve to somewhere between twelve and thirteen points a game. Bob, you and I know that's not going to win in high school football very often. Yeah. So we need to work on the offense.

Well, I think there's a lot of lessons to be learned tonight, and uh when you play a schedule like they've played thus far, no doubt about it. You you really you really find out what you're made of, and and the bigger thing, the big thing right now as we head into next week uh with North High and into district play is really the health of our team. I mean, we are really, really banged up. We're we're first of all, we weren't very deep to begin with, and now we're we're facing a lot of injuries. Uh hopefully uh there's a lot of healing that goes on this week. You know, ironically, uh the Crusaders out yarded the East Side Black Raiders two to one. But uh again, those are unofficial statistics, but again, it was it was the big play mistakes all in the first half. There was a 33-yard fumble return for a touchdown, there was a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown. There was a long the long punt return that set up uh a short touchdown for East High. Uh there was the long 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. You know, that you just can't do that and beat a good team like East High. No, you can't. And uh that that really spelled the difference in the game. I thought there was really a lot of positives offensively for the Crusaders. Um probably the negative side of that was the inability to push the ball into the end zone several times when they got into the red zone.

But I felt like they were not overwhelmed by the East Tide line on either side of the ball, defensively or off the offensive line. I thought there were times when they were running the ball pretty well and they had a pretty good, you know, plan to do that. Milky hit a couple passes. He's just a hair off on a couple other big ones. We could have had it easily another 40-50 yards twice if he was just a hair closer in accuracy.

I thought uh given the injuries you had on the field and stuff, I thought there was several positives you could take out of the game offensively.

They're a good team, they got a lot of really great athletes. Uh they're a little undisciplined. You can see that. I think our kids held our discipline fairly well. Um But you know, we can't beat ourselves, and this is a common theme, so we need to get to clean that up. And I think we will, but really proud of the kid the way the kids fought. You know, it's a difficult uh it's difficult to play against a 5-A team with our numbers. So uh excuse me a minute.

John, and it was a very physical game. I mean, and and I and I thought what I enjoy what I was impressed with is we brought physicality as well. I mean uh Absolutely.

Our kids, you know, I I commended our kids just a minute ago on their effort. You know, w I never ever questioned their effort. It's just the execution. And uh, you know, if we execute and don't, you know, special team stuff, we didn't execute the way we wanted to. We obviously did not want to kick the Chris forward a couple times. And we did. And uh, you know, just little things like that, but uh it's it's good to build on. Uh I told the guys ultimately, you know, you want to win every game, but obviously this has no bearing on what we what our main goal is, is to to win a three AC championship. And uh, you know, once we get in the district, that's when the the real ball ball games start.

Well, John, this three-game gauntlet you ran through to start the season, uh obviously the downside is it's it's very physical and takes a little toll physically on your team, but but it also shows you exactly where you're at with things and from a coaching perspective. I mean you you walk into next Sunday or walk into Sunday and Monday and you you kind of know just the things you gotta clean up and uh there were some positive steps I thought tonight from from from up here uh up from the offensive end. I thought Eli Eli did a nice job of getting out some tough situations. Uh again, just uh a couple of fingertip passes w would have changed things, but uh you know, it was more you know, you look at the scoreboard and say, Well you know, it's a loss, but there's a lot of positives you can take out of it.

Yeah, you know, and I thought our defense played really, really well, actually, too. I thought uh uh once again uh we gave up, you know, one to me one true defensive touchdown. Uh you know, I had a short one there. Short field, but other than that, you know, uh against a really explosive team that uh has all kinds of ball players. I thought we we held them in check fairly well. It's just you know, we can't can't give up the big play. Uh we can't the special team stuff, the you know, the the turnovers, those those will bite you against a good team, and that's what happened tonight.

Have you ever been in a game where you've you're down 14 to nothing the other team's offense hasn't even been on the field yet? No, and I don't want to do it again, Bob. I'd be honest with you. It's just it's just crazy. And uh you mean you had some really nice things going on that first drive. Absolutely.

Yeah, removing the ball well and just you know take the eye off get a bad snap, take our eye off it, and then just you know. But that's what happens when you play good teams. They they capitalize on those things.

So you had a great uh great formation wrinkle there that I think caught them a little off guard. It was and I I think you gotta be impressed with the play of your of your linemen on both sides of the ball. I mean, they they were able to create some things in the running game and uh defensively they basically shut shut out the the running game for East Eye.

Yeah, and that was kind of the you know, we challenged them to do that. We wanted to be make sure that we could number one run the ball because we haven't done that effectively all year. And I thought we we gained, we grew there this week. And then we had to you know stop defensively and stop to run, don't give up the big play. I thought we did pretty well with that defensively. It's just you know, when you give them special team stuff, and you know, just like we talked about, special team stuff and turnovers and uh you know, it's not a recipe for success. So we need to clean those up, and it's it's about us executing, not necessarily what they did to us.

And that next man mentality, you got like uh you know Brody Sham coming in and running out of the I formation. I thought Aaron Liszt did a nice job filling in for Hytree in that in that linebacking spot. Uh we called his name quite a bit. So Trent Baker made a heck of a play out there.

I thought he played really well at Sam Backer. Um we had some kids that made some really nice plays. Tommy Carroll got a lot of play in there, especially at safety, where he's not real comfortable, but did a nice job. And we've got some young guys, and uh, you know, I guess if you take away another positive, is some young guy stepped up and and and and gave us some stuff in there that I think we can build on through here. And and we're gonna need to, we're gonna have to get healed up here. We got a lot of guys banged up after this one.

So how do you how do you approach that, John, with with the injuries you have?

Yeah, well, you know, we'll be smart with you guys. Obviously, some of the g you know, you can't practice football without being a little physical, but uh we'll we'll draw back some, you know, and uh execute, execute, execute. And you don't have to necessarily really just go pounding your head against uh somebody else to get things the execution down to a you know a high speed. So we we'll do that and we'll be uh we'll be ready to go against North team that's probably gonna want to get some retribution after last night. So it'll be uh you know, another tough another five A school, and I know it's you know it's uh kind of like a broken record playing four A and five A schools, but uh you know that's what we want to do. We want to play good teams so we can be ready for our district.

You know, it sounds almost crazy to me, and maybe you don't feel this way, but I w after we're watching tonight compared to last week, I I actually feel better about our team tonight than I thought we really made some positive strides in a lot of areas.

I think we did it offensively for sure. Yeah, I think we did offensively, you know, but the the the special, but it's a three-phase game. Yeah, and offense and defense was was fairly decent, but our special that special team stuff. Now, Chris Ford's a heck of a player. Yeah. I mean that kid is uh there's a reason he's gonna go USD, and to me he should be maybe going to a little higher level than that. He's a ball player. But uh, you know, it's they're tough. And uh I think they've got a really good chance at 5A this year. Um, and they clean some things up and do some things right, they'll they'll have an opportunity to go a long ways.

I mean, I I think there's a lot of players that maybe were put in unfamiliar roles, and and they turned out to work themselves very well into a good game.

And I don't think we ever mentioned our down linemen near enough. I mean, there was a lot of good things there. I mean, every time you looked at at uh Cook scrambling out of the pocket, there was Big Max Asoff or one of our linemen right on his heels, uh, whether it be him or Mickey or whoever, you know, uh the boy I thought they did a really nice job in the in the in the trenches. And you know, that's that's what you need to do and to stay in a game like this and erase some of the some of the bugaboos that we had on special teams and with uh with some of the turnovers, uh, this is a very different ball game.

I I totally concur. You know, the the thing that I was worried about is that their offensive and defensive line would push ours around. That didn't happen. They got they got some occasional play, they got in the backfield, but that we didn't get pushed around, and that's uh that's a very much a positive.
