Travis Morgan and Bob Gary here with you on 88.1 Catholic Radio. As tonight is game four of the season for the Healing Crusaders as they host their crosstown rivals, the Sioux City North Stars. Bob Gary, this is a simple thing. North is not that good. And and that let's be honest about this. They're 0-3. But if you looked at records, well then you'd probably say Heal's not very good either. They're one and two. But at the same time, Healens played two of the best teams in the state in their class and hasn't turned out their way. Tonight, they're going to get a chance to really kind of see what they can do with the different different parts because North, um, they're they're gonna be the underdog in this one.

Well, a game like this tonight, Travis, is about us. You know, as a coaching staff, I'm sure they've been preaching all week that this really isn't about North, it's about us getting better as we head into districts next week. And uh, man, we we start off with a tough district game. So in in many respects, it's kind of a trap game. You you gotta keep your focus because uh obviously it wasn't hard to get the kids up for East High last week, and it's not gonna be that hard next week when you uh have a good Sioux Center team coming in. But, you know, the moment and time, and you've got to do things that uh do things well that that you can do, and uh again, it's it's an us game.

For those that aren't familiar with this, because back in the day, you know, it wasn't that long ago when your overall record mattered a ton in order to get into the playoffs. You lost once, boy, it all of a sudden it was like, do we get in, do we not get in? Explain the format now, as it's been for the last few years in high school football in Iowa. These games where you're not playing in your district, they really don't matter much at the end of the year. So just kind of just go through and tell the people that maybe don't understand the playoff system how it works.

Well, it's really based on your district performance. And uh, you know, if you win your district, you're automatically in, and then uh qualifiers come after that. Um, you know, based, you know, typically you'll get two and maybe three teams out of your district. But uh and I I love this system because it it it it rewards you for playing good competition and it keeps a lot of the natural rivalries. You know, we're a 3A, East is a 5A. If if the system was different, there would be no reason to play that game yet. It's a natural rivalry. Let's have a game like that. And and we see that across the board. We see you know teams like uh Carol Kemper that's really, really good kicking up a couple classes and play some good competition. And you know, in in theory, it should help you out. Now you gotta stay healthy through that situation. And uh, and we touched upon this throughout the early part of the season. Uh it it was a killer opening for the first three games. And um, you know, physically, uh, we're we're gonna see some of our kids that you know we're we were kind of counting on that are that are not playing or playing limited time, but uh, you know, that that's the nature of the beast. Uh I feel bad for for Sergeant Bluff. They're they're down their top two running backs, you know, one with a broken back, one with an ACL. You know, and that's a team that probably had a shot. Well, had had it, and and I think even with that, still has a shot. I mean, they're they're loaded for bear, but uh I was talking to their trainer this week and he said, you know, it's just it's just one of those years. I really feel bad for the Houston kid because you know he had a great sophomore year and lost, had a freak elbow injury last year and lost most of that. And now it looked good. And he looked good against us. And now I blew his ACL, and you know, it's just you just feel bad for a kid like that. And senior athlete, you know, it's just uh but uh it's the nature of football.

And the same could be said for healing. You know, JJ Hope is playing against Sergeant Bluff, and they lose him after two possessions, you know, and there's a kid that is a game changer in so many different ways, offensively, defensively, and without question, special teams. He's been out of the lineup. And then High Tree goes down with it with the torn ACL, you know, and he was the guy that that was really kind of the home run hitter for us at the running back spot, and he's now done for the season. So, you know, when it comes to football, it it's not a question of who's gonna have the injuries, it it's it's just who's gonna have them at the wrong time and which kids are gonna have them and and how how bad are they, you know, and when you talk ACLs and things like that, those are those are devastating injuries. And in the smaller classes, those hurt a lot more than the big classes because you just have fewer bodies.

Well, I do. I mean when you lose a kid, you lose a two-way or in all likelihood, and uh, you know, it's coach speak, but it's next man up. And uh I I think healing we saw a little bit of that last week. Uh we saw Brody Schram come in and do some running and and and ran the ball well. Sometimes you find those hidden gems, you know, out of situations like that. But uh, you know, I I think it's a situation tonight where uh where it's really let's get some momentum. You know, it's really about getting some positive momentum and uh let's we we hope that they get out of the gate quickly, the the Crusaders.

The surprise last week maybe was the fact that everybody was looking forward to that East High offense and the Healing defense, the m and more more specifically, the wide receiver cornerback matchups that that presented, you know, last week. And when you saw the score, you're like, oh wow, East had kind of had their way. It really wasn't that way. They scored two defensive touchdowns and a special teams touchdown. They really didn't do a lot offensively. It was the Heal defense really did a great job against the fantastic East offense last week. That has to make them feel a lot better coming into this week.

And I think a lot of that, Travis, was the was a play of our line. I thought our defensive line did an excellent job of of putting some pressure on them. Yeah, they had the the two uh defensive touchdowns, they had the kick return touchdown, and the other one of their other drives it was a kick kick return inside the the red zone. So literally there was only one drive where they really mounted a substantial distance. Uh that said, it's it's a very talented offense that East Eye had. And uh boy, you had you had to be really impressed with their defense.

Man, they just fly to the ball and you were saying that's probably the most uh that must be the um maybe the most underrated group that you that you know about.

Well it is, and and you know, they they have every dimension that their kicking games, you know. D one yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean it's uh both the the kicking from Wagger and the kick returns from Ford. I mean, there's not really a weak component now. Speaking about East, I think if they're gonna go really deep, I think they've got to uh be able to establish a little more of a ground game.

And uh because you get into you get into October and early November to get to the dome, you're gonna see some inclement weather. Yeah. That's gonna maybe not allow you to throw the ball around like a pinball machine. You're gonna have to you're gonna have to ground and pound, and I guess that remains to be the question uh that has to be answered by them. But uh uh I you know, I think in talking to Coach after the game last week, I I think he was pretty pleased with a lot of things he saw. Now, obviously, you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot like we did, but that being said, they stayed resilient, they gave up some cheap points early and kept fighting and basically played the second half to a stalemate. What answers does Healen have to answer tonight? Well, I think the the big thing tonight is to establish a running game. You know, that's you know you look at our statistic, our leading our leading rusher at this point has 64 yards on the air, you know, so that's after three games, that's 20 something a game, and we're only averaging uh 94 yards a game. And you know, you know what what John likes. You know, he he he's a line coach and he likes to have a lot of people.

Oh yes. Including the man who's whispering sweet nothings in my in my covered ear right now, but I'm sure they're sweet. I'm talking about the one and only Tom Betts and big crowd on hand tonight there, BG. I mean, there's a lot of people here uh to watch this football game, and and you know, we talked about healing, two very tough losses against two very good football teams. I think when people look at one and two, if you don't know much about it, you go, oh, well, that's oh he is healing down? No, he was not down. He just played really good competition here early, and I think they're gonna be just fine the rest of the way. And I think that's gonna a lot of that is gonna really hinge on the arm of, of course, their quarterback, Elijah Milkey, who is you know just missed a couple here and there in every game. And like you said, if he starts to dial it in, Bob, this offense could really take off.

Because there's no doubt he's got a he's got a great core of receivers that can turn a little into a lot in a hurry. And uh, you know, I think that's one area that they're they're probably gonna focus on. But I think job number one tonight for the Crusaders is uh is to establish that running game and let the big boys up front eat and you know create some holes and uh you know we'll we'll see kids like Dylan Knapp. And I would imagine we'll probably see a little bit more of uh Bodie Schram tonight as well in that running back position. We've been kind of waiting a little bit to see uh Riley Lowry. He's been banged up and hasn't played the last couple games.

And then I think Riley's suited up tonight. Uh so uh you know it's it's it's one of those things though you you gotta play the game. You know, and uh as I said, in in many respects it is kind of a trap game. You you gotta be careful here and uh not give uh North Highs some momentum there. As you look at their captains, they've got some big kisses.

All right. Uh for that Crusader offense, they stand one and two on the season. Of course, they're coached by John LaFleur. Uh they'll start tonight, and these are the projected starters at quarterback, Elijah Milkey, the 225-pound senior. Running back's gonna be handled by Dylan Knapp, the 165-pound junior. Uh, we're hoping to see tonight in another back position is JJ Hope, 165-pound junior. JJ's been shelves since early in the Sergeant Bluff game. Uh Sear Matumbo is gonna line up in the tight end spot. You'll see him line up all over the lineup, uh 235 at 6'5, 6'5, a great target, and of course the the mighty, the mighty two at the wide receiver positions, number one Grant Wick coming at 175 pounds a senior, and his running mate is Prince Wagba, 175 pounds senior as well. And I tell you what, when those two guys get their hands on the ball, anything can happen. Up front, it's been a solid crew this year for Coach Lafleur, Max Asoff, uh Aldo Gonzalez, Max Two at the center position, Keaton Schweitzer, and uh Nolan Mickey round out that lineup, and of course, hand on the kicking chores for the Crusaders is Reed Herbold, the outstanding junior. Reed's had a great season, three for four, field goal wise, perfect from extra points. Uh that's an element uh that we really like to see. For the North Stars, here's their projected starting lineup on offense. They'll start with uh Colton McClellan, and uh he's a 170-pound sophomore, so the sophomore gets the start tonight. We'll see how Colton handles that.

Uh running backs Ian Laughlin, 165-pound senior, four wideouts in their offense Trey Henry, Devin Warden, Finn Keel, and Trey Johnson. And again, there's some athleticism in that receiving core up front for them. It's Judah Henderson, Ben Block, Victor Abreu, uh Um Tresdan Swanson, and Giovanni Verzani. So Gio Verzani, one of the one of the great names in Giovanni Verzani. You got to look better than that. God bless Mother for naming that. That's a that's a wonderful one there. Uh Jensen uh Wondershide is gonna handle the kicking duties for the North Stars, and it looks like uh they're gonna be kicking off here to start the game. They're gonna hand it off up the middle to Knapp, and there's not much going as he's wrapped up for a gain of about a half yard, and that big five-man front closed the gap in a hurry.

Well, and I think you can expect that uh they know they know that we want to establish that. So uh, you know, they're gonna show a variety of formations here. Uh one formation that you were gone last week, but they they did a lot of they'd uh white out four different four guys on one side and one on the other with an empty backfield. We're seeing something similar to that here.

Pretty good hit, and that'll bring up third down and short now. A nice pickup for Knapp of eight.

That'll bring up fourth down and two. So North High comes out and slams the door on Healing on their opening possession. It's three and out. Kind of a surprise there, Bob.

He was hit at the line and then got through it and then dragged another defender for an extra three. They're going to give him six on the run. And that's just that's just the will to not go down, Bob Geary. He just would refuse to go down.

You see just a little dance in his step. He's not dancing around too much. He's just putting his putting his pads north and he's going.

Well, and kudos to that uh North High defensive line right now. I mean, they're they're standing toe-to-toe with the Crusaders, making that running game pretty difficult here. So we'll see what we have in store. Third down and a short two for the Crusaders. 7.23 to go here, quarter one.

Knapp dots the eye formation, one wide receiver each way. Milky under center. The hard count gets north across, and it's a free first down for the Crusaders. Uh nice initial effort by the North Stars on the defensive line there. They're putting a little pressure on the Crusaders. Wegba out to the left and Whitcomb to the right.

Milky out of the shotgun. Back to pass, looking, throwing left, has a man. It's Whitcomb at the 35, makes the first guy missed, and here comes the cavalry, and they bring him down. A nice job of open field tackling. You get out in open field with Whitcomb, and it's you and him. Things can go round wrong in a hurry. He got just squared up just enough to let the cavalry come and help him.

Really a nice, uh, a nice simple check route there. He ran a little uh a little seven, eight, uh, eight-yard hook route and got it to him. As he said, uh putting the ball in his hands is a good thing. Second down now and two, or excuse me, third down and two. A great piece of open field tackling, but a good pitching catch there as it's Milky to Wegba. And they're gonna put it inside the 30 at the 26-yard line.

They basically ran right over top of him on that two-yard touchdown play. I think Knapp prefers the sweep down that close. But uh again, two plays, 37 yards, highlighted by an amazing pitch and catch. Milky to uh Wagbaugh got the ball down to the two-yard line, and Knapp uh finished it off. And uh the old hockey phrase uh it is in fact the hat track. The haty tonight, yep, early on here. Just uh bring it down north 15 minutes into the ballgame.

Knapp just put his head down, and he actually went down another level. He didn't just lower his pads, he put his head all the way down, almost like he was squatting down to get in. And oh, and they're gonna run the old well they they they ran the quick uh quick hitter there on the two-point conversion where they set up and they called for the ball without motioning over the offensive linemen. Well, they they saw the fact that uh Montumbo at 6'5 had himself isolated against our cornerback, and in in theory, pretty good deal, but uh maybe we the pass was maybe a little bit rushed. Give him a chance to go up and get that jump ball situation. But uh great start for the Crusaders here, which we highlighted early on. Thank you, Tim. Obviously, you're a cross country and track coach. But first and foremost, you're an education professional in a Catholic system. Describe what it means to Form young minds and bodies in a Catholic system.

Well, being a public school kid myself, um I appreciate the fact that we can bring faith in the classroom, um, that w they can, you know, we can bring that into my practices, and just just the the chance for them to um explore different things um in a Catholic school where they might not have those opportunities. I I think that's a wonderful way of expressing it. And that and that everyday faith touching is very important. Cross-country teams usually have very large rosters. Is it tough to touch every individual on that roster throughout the season?

It can be. Um I don't have as big as teams as I've had in the past, so um but I try to get you know, like warm-ups, if we do some easy runs, whatever, just kind of um you know, kind of feel the pulse of the team. So catch different kids different days and just see how see how they're doing and you know, just not only in running, but personal life, school, all that stuff. So I we try to make a conservative effort. Um Coach Smith and I just we and Coach Smith is also in the school, so that helps a lot. Um but so we try to do as much as we can with the time we have with them.

Right. I I think that's a really important piece. Now keep in mind track, cross country, they're both somewhat individual sports. How do you build a team culture when so much is driven by individual performance?

SPEAKER_13 1:29:23

Well, uh the biggest thing it starts in the summer. Uh-huh. Um the hot mornings. Yep, yep. You know, we're all in it together, you know, sweating through it, whatever you have. And uh, but then we also do um the day before meets. We have we have some chapel time um together, and then we also have pre-meet meals, and that's you know, just time to just sit down, eat, talk to each other, and just you know, kind of build those relationships. Um and we have about 35 kids, so it's we're we're big, but we're not too big. We're most of the kids, you know, have classes with each other, or you know, they know they they know the names, so they they don't talk to each other every day, everybody, but I mean they it's just it's one of those things where you just form those bonds during the summer and that just kind of carries over the season.

Obviously, running involves the strength and muscle of a body, proper conditioning, hydration, nutrition, all important pieces. Do you stress that with your kids outside of the classroom and outside of the cra practices?

SPEAKER_13 1:30:27

Almost every day. Okay. We had to talk about it today because I said, you know, we've had cooler weather and kids were saying I didn't drink enough today, and I said, that's gotta be an everyday. It doesn't matter if it's 50 degrees or 90 degrees. We have to drink. Sleep is important, and I know they have a lot of you know classwork and stuff, but you have to get to sleep. Not just for practices, but for school.

Um, and then of course, you know, getting the proper meals at the proper times. And um, so we it would it's not every day, but it's close to every day that we touch on one aspect of hydration and you know, eating and sleeping and stuff like that.

So do so do you have kind of a menu list of foods that you like them to eat?

SPEAKER_13 1:31:06

Uh kind of a little bit. Each everybody kind of and that's what we kind of try to figure out, you know, during the summer and hard workouts. Correct. What can you have beforehand? Right. You know, that you can tolerate and stuff like that. But um, our parents are so good at providing pre-meat meals, snacks, drinks, what have you. Do we just and you know, they pretty much have it down what the kids like, and so I mean that helps a lot too.

It does. It I I I can see how that would be. As with every other sport, you know, basketball has wrestling. In your venue of cross country, there's either volleyball or maybe some football kids. What is your stand on multi-sport athletes or athletes who try to st try to maybe do both sports?

Um, it's tough. Yes, it is tough. Um I've had some success. Um I actually had a swimmer. Right. And right now she's at Black Hill State doing tri she's with a triathlon team.

Talk about two tough sports. Right. She'd practice she'd swim in the morning, she'd come to cross country practice, she goes swimming after cross-country practice.

Um it it takes a commitment, it takes communication. Um, I've done volleyball before. Yep. Um, that's a little tricky because they practice at the same time.

So I sound like a grandpa here because I am a grandpa. Sitting here at 65 years old. Cross country is a sport that requires an incredible level of work and ethic and commitment. Over the last several years, have you seen a change in the students in their willingness to commit to cross-country as far as an everyday running type thing? Or do kids really adapt pretty well to the to the the stress of it?

SPEAKER_13 1:32:56

Um, I've seen a little bit. Okay. Not not as much as one would think. Um but it's still it's still one of those things where a lot of times I feel as a coach I want it more than they do. And it's one of those things that you just kind of have to let it go. And it after all, sports are just supposed to be and it's extracurricular for a reason. Right. So it's supposed to be fun. Right. Um But they still, if you want to be good, you have to have that commitment. Right. And I wouldn't say I've seen I've you know, I've got sport I get kids that cross country probably isn't their favorite. Right. But they're out, they're working hard, but I know they're also have other commitments every other places too. So I just, you know, we just I could scroll them when they show up. Yep, and you know, that's what you know we've been successful doing that. Right.

Also, shout out to the boys' golf team. Uh they won a triangler yesterday at Whispering Creek, uh, defeating uh Sergeant Bluff as well as Lamar's. Uh they head over to uh Sun Valley Country Club on Tuesday for their final triangular of the year, and then the following week they have conference, and uh October 5th, they'll have their district play, which will be held in Lamar's this year. Uh outstanding year going for our golfers as well. Uh real quickly, your halftime statistics for the Crusaders, uh 233 yards uh in the air, 47 on the ground on 13 carries. Uh Milky 9 for 13 with three touchdowns, 233 yards. And of course, his big recipient of most of those has been uh Grant Wickham, three touchdown catches through and five catches overall for 149 yards. Uh outstanding first half for Mr. Wickham. He's got how many catches, Bob Geer? He just has five, but uh three three three of them are of the highlight variety. Absolutely. And for the North Stars, as the score might indicate, not quite as much success and really haven't had a chance to get things flowing. Uh but as I mentioned during the broadcast, I think this is the offense that we thought we could have this year. Um, and you're seeing it tonight, and I think it really it all comes together when Milky is able to hit Whitcomb and hit Wegba on those deep passes, because then all of a sudden you got you got running lanes now, because everybody's got a backup. And and you saw that here, they're we can only rush three because they they had to put everybody in the in the defensive backfield to try to stop those cats. And if they're gonna start, if if Milky can start completing those cat those passes on a consistent basis in class three A, this passing attack is could be the toughest passing attack to stop in the state, without question, with those re with those receivers. It's really hard.

And I would imagine, Travis, uh, one of the first things John Fleur is gonna say is my offensive line gave him nice pockets to throw up, and uh we all know that uh the the the silent ingredient to a good passing game is the protection you give your quarterback, and I tell you what, he's had a nice pocket to throw. I think he's only had contact uh a couple of times, and those were well after he's thrown the ball. So um, you know, there's there's a lot of ingredients that go into that, but I tell you what, uh the the the uh press box is kind of buzzing with uh the effort that Grant Wickham put in that first half. I tell you what, uh those were showstoppers, those catches, and uh we kind of knew what we had there, but uh boy the we certainly got evidence of it.

It should show it showed it tonight, though. Like like and the best part about it is I was have it. I was watching all three of Wickham's touchdowns, channel nine, channel four, both in the house. So if you want to see them, I mean, I'm sure we do such a fantastic job of painting the picture for you, don't get me wrong. But you are kind of the castle of radio. I mean that's what that's what that's what my wife calls me anyway. Uh you know, is is that. But you know, to see it and to to be able to hear it, two different things, uh the the third touchdown Wickham had was probably the best touchdown you're gonna see this year. Uh it was just an unbelievable effort, and it showcased his raw speed and talent uh to high point it and then run away and run through and and really if you are a college coach out there and you are you're here in the building, you are you're very high on that young man. And uh this is and and you know, we talked about the confidence level too, you know, you they're one and two, Bob. You know, the your confidence isn't very high when you're one and two football team. You know, you come out here and put up 41 and you do it with relative ease, uh this is what this is exactly what the doctor ordered for next week because Sustener is a monster. Stu Stenner is is gonna be this team with Healing at the end where this this very well could be, you hate to say that first game right out of the gate in in the district play. This could be your district championship game right away. And uh you want you want all your guys feeling pretty good about themselves going in there, and they will.

That has not been the case at all with North High tonight. They have showed up, they've been game, they've never put their heads down, they've kept playing, and that was indication right there. They just gave up a big touchdown on the first play of that half, and somehow, some way they came back and answered with an individual effort that was fantastic. But this North High crew has not wavered in what they're trying to do. I mean, they're still game, they're still, they're still they're still hitting, they're still running. Uh, and that's the tip of the cap of the coaching staff to get them up and get them like that. And except you know what, it's also a parental thing, too, in my opinion. These kids got good parents that have told them, hey, you're not gonna quit at anything.

Well, and you're playing in front of a big crowd, too. You know, you play in front of a JV game, it's usually your parents, you know, and and whatnot. But playing in front of over a thousand people on a Friday night, that's that's an awesome thing. Bridges hands the Lowry, sidesteps the first defender, and then it's nothing going after that. He's having a tough time finding really a lot of room out there as that the holes keep closing up pretty quick. Now, one of the fun things about having guys, and the good thing about having your young guys play in this, many of you probably know the name Jeff Beller, who's the head coach at Norfolk Catholic. Jeff and I talk all the time, and he was talking about why they're so good every year, and it's because games like this, they have they play a lot of games like this. Norfolk Catholic wins a lot of football games. They get a lot of these kids in with varsity experience when they're freshmen and sophomores, and it carries over when they're ready to play. So it's the little things like this that can help just mold the program and get those young guys real, legitimate, live varsity experience. Bridges on the throw, has a man, and he finds his favorite target. It's Tommy Carroll. And this kid can fill the football, Bob Geary. And Tommy Carroll can catch it. And he can catch it and get open.

Uh uh Dylan Dylan Dylan Knapp had Dylan Knapp and Dylan Knapp had three touchdowns early to get us going there. Uh still you'd like to see a little more uh ground and pound off the off the running game uh unofficially about 400 yards of total offense, but uh over 325 of those yards came by way of the air. So um, you know, it's as it gets uh when you're when you live in the midwest, as you get deeper and deeper into those seasons, you uh you gotta find ways to run that ball.

Wake him tonight was the first night that I think we saw the capabilities of of what he can do, and I think that was much in due to the fact that the quarterback tonight, and I say the quarterback, I mean he's the guy. It's it's it's Elijah Milky. He really got things going tonight. The step that he'd taken from the first three games to tonight, and you said that before the game even started tonight. You're like, I think Milky's gonna have a n'a gonna have a big night, he's gonna have a little more time. But those those throws that have been just uh just on the outstretched arms of the wide receivers tonight, they were on the money. And if that's gonna be the case, partner, this healing football team is gonna be an absolute handful to stop.

Yeah, and he's he's got as strong as arm as you're gonna see in 3A. I mean, and uh he's got a wide receiving core. I mean, you I don't know if anybody better than 3A. You've got the wide scat scat back types in uh Wagbaugh and Wickham, but you also got the big body in the middle on the Matumbo. Uh you know, you can catch the ball out of the backfield, napkin. Uh we didn't see much of Moss catching the ball tonight, but he's shown he's shown some things there. So it's a pretty wide ars arsenal again. But I I I think uh and and and John can relate to this, I think probably do I like to see a little more uh open running space with the running backs. We didn't see Milky uh really hold on to the ball. Which is okay, you know, which is okay, but I think that's an element as we get into district play, you'll see a little bit more of where some RPOs with him getting out of the pocket. Um another nice defensive effort. I think our linebacking core, which is all new this year, is getting stronger and stronger, and those the guys up front, A ASOF and uh Mickey and those guys uh do a great job. Uh C Bass uh Sebastian Pratt is really coming on. He's getting more and more confidence. He he's a big kid, just a sophomore. A lot of uh a lot of sophomores showing their showing their merit tonight. Uh the likes of Tommy Carroll and uh Isaac Old Miller and uh people like that. Uh it's good to see in a game like this. But uh, you know, it's it's I don't want to say it's kind of what we expected, but it's kind of what we expected.

You know, you have three the big play, you're so good defensively, except for those you had you have they have these moments where they give up big plays, and that's kind of been their big bugaboo is just big plays this year, and it happened tonight with North because let's face it, I mean Trey Henry had himself a football game tonight. He he did a great job with North three long touchdowns, they were just big plays, but those are the three big plays that you know they were big. They got touchdowns off the night.

You know, it was when Milky starts putting that ball on the money, there's not many people at the high school level in this in class 3A or any class for that matter, that are gonna be able to run stride for stride and not and cover Wegba and Whitcomb, because those boys are gonna be open. And if Milky can put it there, there's not many teams that can stop that.

Sioux Stenner Healing has been an absolute war that's been close for a number of years here recently, and it's decided a whole lot.

Uh um, and you know, they they gave us gave us an opportunity to get some of these, you know, guys that play a lot some rest. And and and we certainly need that. Uh we've went through we've gone through a gauntlet the first four weeks. Got some injuries too. Yeah, that's what I mean. We need we need to get these guys healed up. Hopefully, fortunately, I think we're gonna have uh the majority of them back next week. And uh, you know, it and uh we should be good to go. But uh, you know, we'll uh it'll be fun, you know. And I and let's I hope we get a lot of people out here. I think we're gonna see a really good football game next next next week. And I think the weather's gonna be nice. I think the last time Look supposed to be in the 50s. I mean, it'd be feel like football weather. Absolutely. You know, and better than this hot, humid stuff that we've had. Credit to Norse, you know, they kept fighting over there. Coach Moore did a great job as far as keeping their guys involved, keeping them, you know, they they didn't quit, they didn't give up, they still battled till the end. Uh that's a difficult situation where he's in, and I give I give Coach Moore a lot of credit for for um you know keeping his guys at it, and and uh they'll they'll win a couple ballgames.

And uh uh we we mentioned that up here too is you can tell a lot of character about a team and character and coaching, when things have officially gone off the rails for you, there's not a chance, and your guys keep coming. And they kept coming tonight. There was no quitting them. Um yeah, I love that about Sioux City North, is they they fought to the end, whether no matter what the score was. And and that's good, and that's good for your kids too. Because, you know, at the end of the day, like you said, you got the young kids in there. That's invaluable. People forget about that. They think that just putting them out there during varsity is just, oh, it's a it's kind of a a means to an end to just end the in the football game. It's not a means to the end of the coaching staff and to those kids because you get freshmen and sophomores now, talk about that. The importance of getting those kids in in games like this, where it's Friday night lights, they're playing in front of a thousand people under the lights, and they're playing against the ones over there across the way. Yeah, that's an invaluable varsity experience for those young guys. Absolutely.

You know, and you saw some kids step up, Isaac Oleg Mueller. Oleg Mueller was it was unstoppable. That's uh I mean I couldn't be more happy for a kid like that. And it but you know it's it's it's eye-opening for those young guys to understand the level of football that they need to get to. Yep. And and you know, a lot it's it's it's easy to sit on the sideline and watch and and you know, go, oh, I need to play that way. But when you get thrown in there and get thrown to the wolves, so to speak, you're like, oh crap, maybe it's not like I thought it was gonna be. I hope we have an opportunity at some point to get those guys in again later this year. Yep. I don't know, our district is gonna be really tough. But to be able to get them on the field tonight was was great. They got a few JV games coming up where they'll get they'll get some more action. But we gotta, you know, we're thin, extremely thin. And you know, um those w we're gonna need at some point this year one of those kids probably to step up and play some meaningful minutes. And you know, that that was the starting point for me.

And I can guarantee you that Sioux Center is sitting back there going, Thank goodness it's homecoming week at healing. Yeah, but uh you've got to keep them and you're you're okay. Like, what do you do in this situation? Like, is there a way to to kind of block it out for them and and keep them focused? Or do you just kind of just gotta hope they can do it?

Uh the fact that Sioux Center is not gonna be your weakest opponent. That probably helps as far as keeping the attention and the focus on what it needs to be. Uh yeah, it really does.
