What if procrastination isn't a sign you're lazy?
What if it's your body's way of protecting you?
In this episode, we explore procrastination through the lens of Chinese Medicine and Human Design, uncovering why resistance often appears when we're exhausted, frustrated, out of alignment, or following someone else's strategy.

Because sometimes the answer isn't to push harder.
It's to listen more closely.
If you've been trying to build your business by working harder, posting more, or following strategies that never quite feel right, it may be time for a different approach.
At Networking By Design, we believe success comes from understanding how you're naturally designed to communicate, connect, and create impact.

Welcome back to Network by Design. Today I want to talk about something almost everybody struggles with. Procrastination. That thing we beat ourselves up over. That thing every productivity guru tells us to fix. That thing that leaves us staring at a computer screen, scrolling social media, cleaning out kitchen drawers, reorganizing our desk, or suddenly deciding now is the perfect time to fold washing. And the story we're usually told is simple. You're lazy, you're undisciplined, you lack motivation, you need better habits, you need more accountability, you need to push harder. But what if procrastination isn't the problem? What if procrastination is actually a symptom? And what if your body is using procrastination as a form of protection? Today I want to explore procrastination through the lens of both Chinese medicine and human design, because both systems suggest something radical. The body is intelligent. And when it says no, there is usually a reason. Let's start with a simple observation. Think about something you genuinely love doing, something that lights you up. Maybe it's gardening, maybe it's painting, maybe it's helping people, maybe it's learning, maybe it's planning a holiday. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to lose track of time doing those things? Hours disappear. You don't need motivation, you don't need discipline, you don't need a productivity hack. The energy is simply there. Now compare that to something you've been putting off for weeks, maybe months. You know it needs doing, you know it's important, yet every time you sit down to do it, your entire body resists. And here's the interesting question. If procrastination was simply laziness, why can you work for hours on one thing and struggle for 10 minutes on another? Clearly, something deeper is happening. Chinese medicine has a fascinating perspective on this. In Western culture, we tend to view the body like a machine. If it's not performing, we assume something is wrong. Chinese medicine sees the body more like an ecosystem. Everything is communication, everything is information, every symptom has a message. Fatigue, pain, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, they aren't necessarily the enemy, they're feedback. And procrastination can be viewed the same way. One of the organs heavily associated with overthinking and mental rumination in Chinese medicine is the spleen. The spleen is responsible for transforming food into energy, but it also governs thought. When the spleen becomes depleted, people often experience overthinking, indecision, mental fatigue, brain fog, and difficulty taking action. It's not that they don't want to move forward and they don't have the energetic resources available. Their mind is trying to write a check, their body can't cash, and then comes the guilt because society tells them to push harder. But pushing harder on an exhausted system is like flooring the accelerator in a car that's already running on fumes. Eventually something breaks. Another pattern I see often is what Chinese medicine calls liver qi stagnation. This is the energy of frustration, the feeling of being stuck, the feeling of wanting to move but not knowing how. Many people experiencing procrastination aren't actually lacking motivation. They're trapped in frustration, and frustration creates resistance. The more resistance builds, the harder it becomes to move. Then we layer shame on top, and now we're fighting ourselves. Chinese medicine would ask a different question. What is the body trying to communicate? What is creating the stagnation? What needs to move? Now let's bring human design into the conversation. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is assuming they should all work the same way. Human design suggests exactly the opposite. Different people are designed to make decisions differently. Different people are designed to create differently. Different people are designed to use energy differently. Yet most productivity advice assumes everyone should operate exactly the same way. Let's take manifesting generators and generators. These types are designed to respond. Their energy activates when something external gives them something to respond to, an opportunity, a question, an idea, a conversation, a spark. But many of them spend years trying to initiate everything from their mind. They sit at a blank screen waiting for inspiration and nothing happens. Then they label themselves procrastinators. But they're not procrastinating. They're trying to access energy through the wrong doorway. Projectors often experience something different. Projectors aren't designed for constant output, yet they often try to keep up with generator energy. They force themselves into endless action. Then wonder why they feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and resistant. Again, the body isn't failing and the body is protecting itself. Manifestors can experience procrastination when they feel controlled, when they feel boxed in, when they feel like they have no freedom. Suddenly, even simple tasks feel impossible, not because they lack motivation, because their autonomy feels threatened. Reflectors often need time, real time to gain clarity. Yet they live in a world demanding instant decisions. The pressure itself can create paralysis, different design, different needs, and different timing. And here's where human design and Chinese medicine overlap beautifully. Neither system assumes the body is wrong. Both assume the body is communicating. Let's go deeper. What if procrastination isn't fear of failure? What if it's fear of depletion? Your body remembers. Your nervous system remembers. Every time you've pushed through exhaustion, every time you've ignored your intuition, every time you've forced yourself to do something that wasn't aligned, your body stores that memory. Eventually it starts applying the brakes. Not to punish you, to protect you. Imagine a child who keeps touching a hot stove. Eventually they learn. If a particular way of working consistently leads to stress, overwhelm, burnout, and disappointment, the body begins creating resistance. Not because it's lazy, because it's intelligent. And here's the uncomfortable truth. Sometimation is revealing that the goal isn't actually yours. Maybe the business model isn't yours. Maybe the strategy isn't yours. Maybe the schedule isn't yours. Maybe the dream itself belongs to somebody else. When we move toward things that genuinely align with us, energy tends to appear. When we move toward things that consistently drain us, resistance tends to appear. That's not weakness if that's information. So what do we do? Instead of asking, how do I stop procrastinating? Try asking, what is my body protecting me from? Am I exhausted? Am I overwhelmed? Am I trying to force timing? Am I following somebody else's strategy? Am I attempting to make a decision my body hasn't actually agreed to? What is this resistance trying to teach me? Because the moment we stop treating procrastination as the enemy, curiosity becomes possible. And curiosity opens the door to understanding. Now I want to be clear: not every instance of procrastination is intuition. Sometimes we do need structure, sometimes we do need discipline. Sometimes we do need to do the thing. But before we force ourselves forward, it's worth asking whether the resistance is coming from laziness or wisdom. Because one of the biggest lessons both Chinese medicine and human design have taught me is this. And sometimes that small shift changes everything. Before we finish today, I want to leave you with something practical. Because understanding why procrastination happens is important. But understanding how you're designed to move forward is where things start to change. One of the things I see over and over again with network marketers, coaches, and online business owners is that they assume the problem is effort. They think they need to post more, message more people, follow up more often, be more consistent. But what if the problem isn't effort? What if the problem is that you're trying to grow your business in a way that doesn't fit how you're naturally designed to operate? Because when that happens, everything feels harder than it needs to. Your content feels forced, your DMs feel awkward, you second guess every post. You spend hours creating content that gets little engagement. You know you should follow up with people, but you avoid it because it doesn't feel natural. And eventually you start wondering if you're the problem. That's exactly why I created the Networking by Design playbooks. The playbooks help you understand how your unique human design influences the way you're designed to communicate, connect, create content, and build relationships. Because a generator trying to build a business like a manifester often struggles. A projector trying to market like a manifesting generator burns out. A manifester following someone else's formula loses momentum. And a reflector trying to force decisions before they have clarity can feel completely stuck. When you understand your design, something interesting happens. Your content starts sounding more like you. The right people start paying attention. Conversations become easier. You stop wondering what to say in your DMs. You stop feeling like you're chasing people, and you start creating a signal that naturally attracts people who resonate with what you offer. Inside each playbook, you'll discover how your energy naturally attracts opportunities, how to create content that feels authentic instead of performative. How to start conversations without scripts. How to move people through DMs in a way that feels natural and genuine. How to recognize when you're operating in alignment and when you're forcing. A simple action plan you can implement immediately. And AI prompts customized to your type. So creating content becomes faster and easier. Because most people don't need another script, they don't need another funnel. They don't need another marketing strategy. They need a strategy that works with who they are. Imagine creating content without constantly wondering if it's right. Imagine opening your inbox and knowing exactly how to respond. Imagine attracting people who already feel connected to you before you ever have a conversation. Imagine building a business that feels lighter because you're no longer trying to be somebody else. That's the transformation these playbooks are designed to create. If today's episode resonated with you, you'll find a link in the show notes where you can discover your type and choose the playbook that's right for you. Because maybe procrastination isn't your body telling you to work harder. Maybe it's your body telling you it's time to stop forcing someone else's strategy and start working with your own design.
