📚 ABOUT IT WORKS! The Famous Little Red Book That Makes Your Dreams Come True
First published in 1926 by an anonymous author named RHJ, this book has been described as the 'distilled version of all modern success literature.' It's 20-something pages pack a punch and outline a formula for success that has held for over a century.
Do not talk to anyone about your plan except the great power within you, which will unfold to your objective mind the method of accomplishment.
SPEAKER_00I'm trying to get a promotion. I'm trying to build a business. I'm trying to get a million dollars. You can only tell the people that you know 100% for sure are going to be there to help build you up because if you start telling too many people, then you're gonna get doubters and people that are gonna say, you're not gonna do you a million dollars.
SPEAKER_01A natural and ancient enemy will no doubt appear when you get your first taste of accomplishment. This enemy is discredit in the form of such thoughts as it can't be possible, it just happened to be. What a remarkable coincidence.
SPEAKER_00Write out your list, read it three times a day, think of it as often as possible, and then don't talk to anyone about it except your objective mind.
SPEAKER_01On today's episode, we are covering It Works, the famous little red book that makes your dreams come true. And when it talks about little red book, if you're look watching this on YouTube, you can see it literally fits in the palm of your hand, and it is thin. Like I mean, like razor thin. It is teeny tiny. I didn't really have an appreciation for just how small it was until it showed up, and I was like, okay, that's no joke. It's very real. So the the way the book describes itself, it's very simple. A concise, definite, resultful plan with rules, explanations, and suggestions for bettering your condition in life.
SPEAKER_00It's to me basically just a distilled, condensed version of a lot of these books that we're going to talk about and be reading, like, you know, think and grow rich. Like if you took that and made it a 20th the size and just pulled out only the most important info, that's what it is. It's like the idea of using your thoughts to bend reality to your will, more or less. And, you know, I saw I described as someone called it the minimalist skeleton of the entire self-help industry. And I was like, that's that's pretty good. That's pretty good. That is really what it is. Uh so of course it is one of the classics. Before the apps, the influencers, and the viral videos, there were the words. The foundations of success were written decades, even centuries ago. This is the classics. Join us as we explore the legendary texts that have shaped millionaires, leaders, and dreamers for generations. We're pulling back the curtain on the original secrets to greatness to see if they still hold weight in the 21st century. I'm John Kurtz, and with Adam Tank, we're gonna find the gems that history has quickly forgotten. It's time to go back to the basics, and when I say go back, we're going back a hundred years. Literally a hundred years ago.
SPEAKER_01This was published in 1926. It is now 2026, so a century ago, this book was written by somebody named RHJ. So there is no attribution to the actual human being who wrote this, it's just the initials. And there's a person that that writes in the book, R.H. It's it's written anonymously, and it's written by someone who was quote unquote highly successful and widely known for his generosity and helpful spirit. The author preferred that his name be omitted, knowing that the greatest good comes from helping others without expecting praise.
SPEAKER_00And right off the bat, we've already got another one of those themes that we have seen over and over again that we've talked about in both episodes that we've recorded of this podcast already. You help other people, you're gonna get more of what you want. And in particular, if you humbly help other people and do it in a way where you're not expecting anything in return, like that's you you you do it for the sake of helping other people and making a contribution to society, and that's how it comes back on you. Exactly right.
SPEAKER_01However, RHJ was not uh anonymous for that long because he was later revealed as Roy Herbert Jarrett. He was a salesman from Chicago. He was not well known like Zig or Napoleon Hill, Clement Stone, etc. But this book had a massive impact on people over the years. I mean, it sold, I mean, this one says over 1.5 million copies at work, and I don't know when this like that was claimed, right? But I'm sure it's probably, you know, five, ten, what however many million copies at this point, which is pretty incredible. And as we were looking into who published it and sort of the history behind it, it's published by the divorce company, D-V-O-R-S-S. And it turns out that the the folks that founded that publishing company are actually the ones behind a church here in Kansas City called the Unity Village Church, which I had no idea about. I had driven past the campus once and was like, what is that? Like it's super cool looking, which is a Unity Spiritual Movement, New Thought, Manifestation, belief system. It's been around for a long time, but I was like, it's basically right in our backyard. Kind of wild.
SPEAKER_00That that is crazy. There's a testimonial at the end of at least the book that I had on Kindle. I had the Kindle version. The testimonial from a woman in Overland Park at the end of the book, and I was like, that's where we both live. And I was like, Well, that's crazy. I was like, all right, I guess I gotta pay attention to this, right? That's a sign. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh the book is literally 24 pages, and as mentioned, it fits in the palm of your hand. And so it it is very dense for how short it is, and it 100% packs a punch. So I'm excited to get into it with you. Yeah, let's do it. All right. So from the very start, you RHJ basically says you have to sort of set aside your disbelief for a second, because a lot of people don't believe in what you're they're about to hear, and a lot of people discredit even the stuff that we've covered already in past episodes. So he says, from a scientific, psychological, or theological viewpoint, some of the following statements may be interpreted as incorrect, but nevertheless, the plan has brought the results desired to those who have followed the simple instructions, and it is my sincere belief that I am now presenting it in a way which will bring happiness and possessions to many more.
SPEAKER_00What he's basically saying is, hey, look, I know a bunch of you are gonna think this is too woo-woo, but I'm telling you this stuff works. And my response to it is like, I there are parts of it where I'm sure some people might roll their eyes, like skeptics would roll their eyes and say, like, yeah, this is a little too woo-woo. And I would say there are enough tenets that come through in his philosophy here that we have seen throughout all these books that it's like, no, these are proven things that work for success. And whether you believe it's metaphysics and your mind, you know, kind of bending reality to your will or it's a higher power, or it's just like, hey, if you have a positive attitude and do these things like better things, or you're you're gonna be more capable. I don't really care, but I've seen enough proof in my own life and from other people throughout hundreds of years that it works. So who cares? Totally.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, it w the whole concept of it works, he sent the book to one of his friends, and his friend wrote back and just said, Yeah, it works. And that's how they came up with the title of it. So love it. So, as you're listening to this, set aside your disbelief for a second and uh just listen to what RHJ has to say. So, first it starts off with this whole concept of knowing what you want. So, setting that big goal, being very definitive about the thing that it is that you want. And he talks about how a lot of people go through life, and he says, so goes the endless stream of expressions like these from millions of people in all classes who give no thought to what they really want and who are getting all they are entitled to or expect. If you are one of these millions of thoughtless talkers or wishers and would like a decided change from your present condition, you can have it. But first of all, you must know what you want, and this is no easy task.
SPEAKER_00Very similar to the same thing Zig did where he's like, he gives this example of a kid who sees a toy down the street that he wants and is jealous of and is like, Oh, like I wish I could have that. Or like a husband and wife who are walking, and the wife's like, Why can't we have a nice house like that? And the husband's like, Well, maybe someday I'll get a job, you know, but for now we need to still rent. I'll get a job that could cover that. And he basically is making the point, like, one, you're just kind of wishing without any like specific desire and not thinking about it regularly and having something really specific that you're working toward and wanting. And two, you're kind of putting it out there in like this negative framing where this all I really like, like Neville Goddard. And it's like, yeah, if you keep putting out the energy, I don't have this, I don't have this, or I want this because I don't have it, you just attract more of that instead of attracting actually having it. So he's just getting into again a lot of these things that you see people talk about over the years.
SPEAKER_01So he talks about what he calls the power. Some might call that God, some might call that, you know, a higher being, some might call it spiritual, right? Whatever it is you believe, just call like consider what that the power means to you and listen to this part. So he says the power is capable and willing to carry to a complete and perfect conclusion every earnest desire of your objective mind. But you must be earnest, sincerely, and truthfully desiring certain conditions or things, mental, physical, or spiritual. So to your point, you have to actually want the thing. Not just wish, not just think it'd be cool to have, yeah, but have a burning desire to have that thing. And the power will work on your behalf to get it for you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not just, oh, those houses are nice. That mansion's cool. I would like that. No, like, hey, what is the what specifics do you want in your house? Like, tell me exactly how many bedrooms, how many bathrooms, like you want a pool? Like, what do you what is your specific dream that you're working for? Uh, another passage I love from here, he said, to get what you want is no more mysterious or uncertain than the radio waves all around you. Tune in correctly and you get a perfect result. But to do this, it is of course necessary to know something of your equipment and have a plan for operation. So, this back to what I said before is so spot on to like the Neville Goddards of the world, who you will hear say, like, you basically you gotta like tune in to the right frequency to bring in what you want, and that's all in your brain, and turning on like the idea that you're putting out there, like the idea of I have this or I can have this, as opposed to like I don't have this. And that it's the idea really of metaphysics here that you can tune into something and like bend reality to your will. It's what I keep coming back to almost, but that is the general philosophy of it. And I know this is the part where some people will be like, John, that's a little too much for me. And like, I get it. My take on it is like I think it's very interesting, and whether it is specifically that or whether it is just once again getting your head right will allow you to accomplish more, I don't care. I just I do believe that it works, whether you think it is specifically because of some metaphysical science and tuning in your brain or whatever. So my take on it.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. All right, so he says that your objective mind and will are so vacillating that you usually only wish for things, and the wonderful, capable power within you does not function. And so to get it to function, he says you have to start with what he calls the plan. So the plan is this write down on paper, in order of their importance, the things and conditions you really want, and do not be afraid of wanting too much. So start there, list them all out, right? As many as you can think of, anything you can think of, and then once you do that, it's a three-part process. And this is like the crux of the book, effectively. And so he says, number one, read the list of what you want three times each day, morning, noon, and night. Secondly, think of what you want as often as possible, and thirdly, do not talk to anyone about your plan except the great power within you, which will unfold to your objective mind the method of accomplishment. And so, a couple of things interesting about this. One, all it's like, don't be afraid of wanting too much. So write it all down in as much detail as you possibly can. If you want a car, what kind of car? What year, what make, what model, what interior, what color, how fast should it go, how many horsepower, right? All those types of things. And then think about it as much as much as you can and review this list three times a day. And so, again, this point of like the repetition, like Ogman Dino and greatest salesman, read something for 30 days. What zig? You have to do something 21 days for it to build a habit. In this case, do it every day, three times a day, and think about it as much as possible, and the brain will start to work in mysterious ways.
SPEAKER_00Crazy how symmetrical all this stuff is, man. Again, you're just like, and this, like you said, this is a correct, like if he could make it a one-sheeter, right, instead of even just this little pamphlet, this is what it would say. Write out your list, read it three times a day, think of it as often as possible, and then don't talk to anyone about it except your objective mind. And that actually triggered a something I heard from Zig Ziggler, where he was talking about when you set goals, his philosophy was if you have a lose goal, like you're trying to lose weight, you're trying to drop a bad habit, you're trying to quit smoking, something like that. He said, Tell everybody because then they're gonna hold you accountable. Like somebody sees you smoking a cigarette, they're gonna be like, hey, what what are you doing? Somebody sees you throwing down, like housing a pizza, they're gonna be like, hey man, aren't you trying to like lose weight? Like, but he said, if it's a a a game goal, like I'm trying to get a promotion, I'm trying to build a business, I'm trying to get a million dollars. So don't tell all you can only tell the people that you know 100% for sure are going to be there to help build you up. Because if you start telling too many people, then you're gonna get doubters and people that are gonna say, Yeah, you're you're not gonna do what do you you a million dollars? Like, what are you talking about? So a similar, this is a little more obviously, like, hey, just don't tell anyone. But I think the concept is probably similar there. Like, you don't want to attract the negative energy to it if you start telling everybody.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. So he for for the woo-woo people in here, this will probably, again, you're gonna be a skeptic, but just again, be open-minded about it. So he says, remember, nothing can prevent your having that which you earnestly desire. Others have these things. Why not you? And this is something I have struggled with for so long. It was beaten to me by my dad from the from the youngest age that you live modestly, you live within your means. A car is something to get from point A to point B. You know, you you should be grateful to have a paycheck to put food on the table every two weeks and have health insurance and all these things. I get it. Like, it's good to be comfortable. On the other hand, like, why can I not want for more? Right? Why can I not want to? I remember, you know, I had friends that that went on a cruise when I was in high school, and my dad was like, nah, we're not, we're not going on that, right? And it's like, okay, I I guess you're right. Like, that's not something that I deserve or that I can have. But why the hell not? Yeah. You know, like it's not wrong to want that kind of stuff. And I've I even today, like as I sit here right now, we're recording this, I still have to retrain my brain to think differently about these things. Like, most of the time when I see someone who's super wealthy or has a ton of stuff, I'm like, douche, like they made a bunch of money doing like doing illegal shit or like what, you know, whatever. Like they you see this massive mansion, you're like, that guy's gotta be an asshole, right? What like why do I think that way? Like, you can have these things, and it's not wrong to want some of this stuff too. And it's not all materialistic, right? You could just just as you could have like a you could want a super loving relationship or have an amazing family or right, whatever it is that you earnestly desire, to his point, like it's okay to want those things, and you should put that stuff out into the universe and expect that you're gonna get it in return.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there definitely is like an inherent vilification of people who are not wealthy, of like this. Oh, yeah, well, they must have done something bad or they are kind of a bad person or whatever. Like, it's it's all it's like a justification. Like, it's not that I could have tried harder or done something to get this, it's that I didn't do these bad things that that person clearly had to do to get the money. Not everybody's like that, but I do think that's just a part of like the human condition. Like, that's just a natural thing you see a lot of. And so that attitude, I think, is kind of what you're hitting at. Now, totally different thing. If we're talking about a billionaire, zillionaire, that type of thing, and like maybe they should be a little more like, okay, I under that's a different deal than just like, you know, you're seeing your neighbor across the street and being like, why does that guy get the nice car? Like, what did he, you know, screw that guy. I also, the other thing that this makes me think of is like how different the opportunity is for like our generation and people who are alive right now, because the barrier to entry to be an entrepreneur is so much lower now than it is for sure than it was back in 1926 when this was written. But even in the 70s, when guys like Zig Ziglar were talking, like with YouTube, podcasts, uh, AI, like there are just so many things that make it way easier to reach a big audience and like allow you to achieve much more generational type of wealth uh than even when we were kids, you know, I feel like it was a little bit different to think about that in like the 90s and early 2000s. So why not embrace that now?
SPEAKER_01Yep, for sure. So on this path to obtaining whatever it is that you earnestly desire, RHJ says that it is almost impossible to make any satisfactory progress when surrounded by skeptics. Therefore, choose your friends carefully and associate with people who now have some of the things you really want, but do not discuss your method of accomplishment with them. So we've heard this how many times now, right? Surround yourself with positive people. This one he takes it a step further and says, surround yourself with people who have the things that you want. Yeah. If you want a family, if you want a bigger home, if you want to have a better business, if whatever it is that you want, find people that already have that stuff and it'll it'll rub off on you for sure.
SPEAKER_00You're naturally gonna see the things that they do on a daily basis, maybe habits that they have or like steps that they've taken in the past, like you will start to understand more what it takes to get that instead of being back to the beginning of the book, the person who's just sitting there walking down the street being like, Oh, that huge house would be awesome to have. I would love to have it, but you don't you have no idea what that person did to actually get there and all the steps that they took. And if you start associating with them, you'll you'll find out. It's exactly right.
SPEAKER_01So we talked a bit about it before, but around the goals that you set, or not goals that you set, but the things that you want, the things that you desire, being super detailed about it. So I think uh for me, this is certainly true. Like, if you, you know, in my case, like let's say I we want it, but let's say we should do this actually for for this podcast. We should say, like, by such and such a date, we're gonna have X number of subscribers or followers or view time or right, whatever it is, but be super detailed. So, like, by what date do we want it? What are we gonna be doing on that day? How are we gonna celebrate, right? All that type of stuff. Uh, maybe we need to do that after we record this.
SPEAKER_00One I can't believe that hadn't popped into my brain yet, but we let's do it, man. All right, let's do it. Okay. This also reminds me of Think and Grow Rich, right? Where literally the mantra in there is like you need to come up with what you want, how much money you want, what date you're gonna get it by, and how you're gonna do it. And then you say it into the mirror like morning and night. Like that, it is literally that. Like, figure out the specifics of it, how you're gonna get there and all that, and then just say it repetition again. Say it over and over again.
SPEAKER_01So, on your path to uh achieving this plan, RHGA says, a natural and ancient enemy will no doubt appear when you get your first taste of accomplishment. This enemy is discredit in the form of such thoughts as it can't be possible, it just happened to be. What a remarkable coincidence. So once you see that this starts to work, and I've done similar things in the past after reading books that cover this just in much longer form, and the stuff is manifested. It's crazy how it works. It's absolutely crazy. Like, think of like in the past, like things you like as a kid, things that you really desperately wanted that you had a burning desire to get, even if it's something just stupid, something like uh a video game console. Here's a great example. Like, I so badly wanted a Nintendo 64. So badly at some point I got it. Do I know how? No, I don't. My parents paid for it. So whether it was because I just I bugged them persistently to have it, or because I was reading the magazines or I was talking to friends, or right, what I don't know what happened in the universe, but it all started out as a thought. I want this thing, and it manifested. I know it's a stupid example, but that could that could literally go for almost anything you want, assuming that you want it bad enough. And of course, the second that it starts to happen, what he's saying is like, oh, well, you know, like, oh, it's just a coincidence. I can't believe that it was this this plan or like this the power that worked in my favor.
SPEAKER_00Well, and some of it too, I feel like, you know, we're so we're from the Midwest, right? We talked about being in Kansas City. There's there's a little bit of this like Midwest nice thing that I feel like comes in sometimes where you're just like, oh, you know, like whatever. It couldn't have been me. It's it's I can't, you're just too humble sometimes about it. Or the opposite, like an imposter syndrome sort of thing. Like it, especially if this is like a business success or something, right? Like you have success, you start to go through in your career. I mean, I can remember I had a lot of success really early on in my career when I was like just starting out out of college and like winning some awards. And, you know, I was like, I I knew inherently that I was talented, but I still at the same time was kind of like, yeah, but I don't know, man. Like maybe, maybe they just make kind of made a mistake here. Maybe I'm just getting lucky, like maybe it's just a weak year for competition, or you start going through all these things in your head when you don't have a great attitude where you can very easily write it off to just like, it wasn't really me that did this. And like, no, man, no, it was you, dude. Like, stand up and and take credit for that. Like it takes work.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. So he then says that, you know, once you've accomplished these things and you start to realize them coming true, you're probably questioning, like, does is this like, is this actually working the way that I think that it's working? And so the quote in the in the book is the power and what it does is beyond understanding. Do not try to understand it, but accept the accomplishment with thankfulness, happiness, and strengthened faith. Embrace the fact that good things are happening. You don't need to understand the mechanics behind it. Just say, I'm so grateful that it is working, and keep on keeping on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'll stress that point that I've made a couple times. Whether it's the woo-woo stuff, whether it's much more practical, I don't care. But yeah, it's working. And I feel better. Right. Doesn't matter to me. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Doesn't matter to me, my friends. Completely. So uh finally, the the final quote we'll leave you with is that great is the reward to those who help and give without thought of self, as it is impossible to be unselfish without gain. We talked about it earlier here, we've talked about it in past episodes. The more you give, the more value that you create in the world, and whatever value means to you, it will return. And you shouldn't be selfish about it, right? Like you are unique, you have a certain set of skills, you should put those out into the world, and uh, it's incredible what'll come back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, uh so many thoughts with this. One, first of all, for for him to immediately send it to a friend who says, like, oh hey, this it works, and then to want to send it out, and then to want to do it anonymously, like all these things are just remarkable when he could have just taken that and used it for his own gain. But it also it makes sense. I feel like when you start to have success with something like this and you're doing it like the right way, it's not like success like you know, Jordan Belfort or something, like scamming people out of money, like Wolf of Wall Street or something. You do wanna, you wanna let other people know. Like, you know, I've I've felt like my life's changed a lot in the last Like two years because I've embraced way more of this. And it's like, then it just leads to all these thoughts. Like, I'm like, yeah, I want to let people know. Like, I see people around me, I think, especially in my generation, just like millennials, like our generation being a little too almost like nihilistic, and just like, oh, we've gone through all these unprecedented things as millennials. You know, oh, it started with 9-11 and you know, crash the stock market crash in 2008, all these things. And it's like those things are can be tough, but if you focus on yourself, you can still build a better life. Yeah, it's really tough to buy a house right now, but if you focus on just making your life better and doing better, like you can get there. Like, so I just I want to share like what has helped me, and that's why we're sitting here in front of a microphone, and I just think that makes so much sense. And then the other thing I'll say about this, I know you might say, well, of course, Sean, he's gonna want to sell a bunch of books, but making this like 26 pages or whatever it is, instead of like 350, like that makes it so much more accessible. It's so much more likely that way more people are going to find this, which yes, is gonna help you sell more, but also it's way cheaper. It was two bucks on Kindle. If you have a big ego about this, you might want to create this 400 page masterpiece or whatever, but no, distill it so that you know more people will see this. And then in the back, there's literally like an order form that's you can buy them by the hundred. You buy it by the hundred because they're so small, and it's like that's that's the way to get it out to as many people as possible and help as many people as possible. I think there are so many things about the way this was done that is just really, really good. He didn't have TikTok where he could just put this in a TikTok for 20 seconds. This is like the TikTok version of it back in the 20s was just make it like a little pamphlet that you can send out. 100 years ago. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Just people listening, I will repeat, this book was written a hundred years ago. And here we are today, yeah, talking about it. Yeah, so I don't know. I would say it were it worked, it worked for him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, something works for also great marketing. Like, think about how so many of these books now, like uh, you know, Mark Manson, like the subtle art of not giving a blank, you know. I feel like that's the way like books try to go now with these like big emphatic titles that make you really like stop and like, oh wait, whoa. This is kind of like that before that was a trend or a thing. Like, all you see is just like, wait, hold up, it's this red book that says it works. Like, wait, what is this? Really good marketing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right, so let's get to the ratings section. This, I man, I didn't know if I should should throw it in the nines or not. I I first had it written down as a nine-five. I backed it off to an eight-nine. Regardless, you absolutely need to get this book. And I will put a disclaimer on it. If you actually do it, if you actually write down the things that you want and you actually go through this plan, it is easily the most consumable, actionable, probably life-changing one. Certainly, that we've reviewed to date, maybe even that I've read to date. It's dense, it's a super easy read. I've already started incorporating it into my daily routine. It's just tremendous all the way around. I will say that if you don't actually follow the steps, it's probably like a six-six because it's not super inspirational, but it's got some nice lessons. You might take a couple things away from it, but it's not gonna be as life-changing as as if you actually do it. So if you do it, if you actually follow the plan, again, it'll take you 10 minutes to read through this thing. Eight, nine, no question, pick it up, read it. It's a winner.
SPEAKER_00I seven, nine is what I went with it. And a lot of it is like what I'm thinking with you where it's like it's not, I'm probably not gonna go around telling people like, oh, this is like my favorite book, because it but if you are to follow, which again, I've I've started to follow it. Like, I wrote down the stuff, I pull out my notebook and read it morning, noon, and night. And I'm like, all right, let's let's put it into practice and see how this works. Clearly, if it works and it gets you down this road, you know, I feel like this is a good like entry point for somebody that hasn't done much of this. If this starts getting you down this road, it could be for sure your favorite book, but not the book that you're gonna like sit by the fireplace and read all the time necessarily, right? Or when you need a pick-me-up. I think there are other passages and other books you could read to get like a more inspirational, like fire you up kind of quote. But it just again, the thing that I love, the the accessibility of it and the scale of it that it allows being that small is just it's amazing. And I love that. I love the concept of it. So it needs to be high. I almost feel bad doing a 7-9. I'll stick with it right now because that's what I had written down. It maybe deserves to be in the eights just because of the concept. It's such a good, unique concept. Well, uh, we we read it so you don't have to. Now, this one, look, people just read it. Okay, look, it's like it's like this, man. It's a I sat down at the pool. It took me like 20 minutes to read it. So just just read it. All right.
