Every HF operator remembers their first contact. This episode walks through exactly how a voice QSO works - the structure of a contact from first call to signed off, how to call CQ, what to say when someone responds, the standard exchange, and the unwritten rules that make the bands work.

There is a moment that every HF operator remembers. You have been listening for weeks, you understand the bands, you have the audio set up correctly, you have checked the checklist, and then you key up for the first time, say your call sign into the air, and wait. What comes back, if conditions are right and someone is listening, is another person somewhere in the world saying your call sign back to you. That moment does not get old. It is the fundamental thing the hobby is built on. Two people, possibly separated by thousands of miles, connected by nothing but physics and skill. This episode is about getting to that moment. Specifically, the mechanics of a voice contact on HF, the structure, the language, the etiquette, and the practical steps from first transmission to logged contact. Let me start with terminology, because the language of amateur radio voice operating has its own vocabulary, and knowing it makes everything easier. A QSO is a contact, a two-way communication between two stations. The term comes from the old Q-code system, a set of three-letter abbreviations developed for Morse code telegraphy that amateur radio inherited and still uses. QSO means contact. QSB means fading. QRM means interference from other stations. QRN means natural noise. QRZ means who is calling me. QTH means location. These will come up and it is worth knowing the most common ones before your first contact. CQ is the general call, an invitation for any station to respond. It is not a Q code, it is a legacy telegraph abbreviation for CQ, and it has been in use since the early days of wireless communication. Calling CQ is how you invite contact when you are not responding to a specific station. A call sign is your FCC assigned identification. In the US, amateur call signs follow a pattern of one or two letters, a number, and one to three letters. The number indicates which of the 10 U.S. call districts you are in. Your call sign is required by FCC regulations to be transmitted at the beginning and end of each contact and at least every 10 minutes during a contact. Now, let me walk through how a contact actually happens, from beginning to end. There are two ways to initiate a contact. You can call CQ, putting your own signal on a frequency and inviting responses. Or, you can answer someone else's CQ, listening until you hear a station calling and then responding to them. For a first contact, answering someone else's CQ is often easier because you do not have to find and hold a clear frequency, and you can listen to how the other operator structures their exchange before you respond. Let me describe the CQ call first so you understand what you are listening for. A standard CQ call on SSB sounds something like this. CQCQ CQ. This is Whiskey1 Alpha Bravo Charlie. Whiskey 1 Alpha Bravo Charlie. Calling CQ and standing by. The station repeats CQ two or three times, gives their call sign twice in phonetics, and then indicates they are listening. The whole thing takes about 10 seconds. On a busy band, a station may call CQ several times in succession before getting a response, or they may get a response immediately. When you hear a CQ call on a frequency that sounds clear of other traffic and you want to respond, you wait for them to finish and then transmit your response. A standard response is, whiskey one, alpha bravo. Charlie. This is your call sign in phonetics. Over. You say their call sign once to make clear who you are calling. Then your own call sign twice so they can copy it even if they only caught part of your transmission, then over to indicate you are done transmitting and waiting for their reply. Keep it short. They do not need your name, your location, or your signal report yet. Just establish that you heard them and give your call sign clearly. If they copy your call sign, they will come back to you. Their response will typically acknowledge you, give you a signal report, and then provide some basic information, usually their name and location, sometimes their equipment. A typical response might be: your call sign, this is their call sign, you are 5-9 in Phoenix, Arizona. Name is John, back to you. 5-9 is a signal report on the RST scale, readability, strength, tone. For voice contacts, the tone component is dropped, and you use a two-number report. 5 means perfectly readable. 9 means extremely strong signal. 5 and 9, or 59, is the standard report for a good strong contact, and you will hear it constantly. It is often given, even when the actual signal is not quite that clean, as a courtesy. Your reply acknowledges their report, gives them your signal report, and provides your equivalent information, name and location at minimum. Something like, John, thank you. You are also 5 and 9 here in San Diego. Name is, whatever name you choose to use, back to you. And from there the contact can either wrap up quickly or develop into a longer conversation depending on what both operators want. The minimum for a logged contact, what counts as a QSO in most contexts, is a two-way exchange of call signs and some form of signal report. Everything beyond that is conversation and entirely optional. When you're ready to end the contact, the standard closing is to thank the other operator, give both call signs, and sign. This is your call sign, this is their call sign, 73. 73 is the traditional amateur radio sign-off meaning best regards. You will hear it at the end of almost every contact. Some operators add 88, which means love and kisses, and is generally exchanged between people who know each other well. Now let me talk about calling CQ yourself, because at some point you will want to do it, and it is slightly more involved than answering someone else's call. Before you call CQ, you need a clear frequency. This is important. Transmitting on a frequency that is already in use, even if you cannot hear the other station due to propagation, is interference and it is poor operating practice. The way to check a frequency is to listen for at least 30 seconds before transmitting. If you hear nothing, key up briefly and ask, is this frequency in use? If no one responds, the frequency is likely clear. You can then begin calling. The standard CQ call format is CQC. This is your call sign and phonetics twice. Calling CQ and standing by. Or you can specify the type of contact you want. CQDX means you are specifically looking for long-distance international contacts. CQ followed by a country or region name means you are looking for a specific area, but for a general first contact, plain CQ is fine. After calling CQ two or three times, listen for responses. Responses to a CQ call can be weak, they can come on slightly different frequencies, and on a busy band, they can overlap each other if multiple stations respond simultaneously. This is called a pile-up, and it is something to be aware of even if your first contacts will not generate one. If you hear a response that you can partially copy, try to get the call sign and ask them to repeat. Something like, the station calling, please say your call sign again, is a perfectly acceptable request and experienced operators will repeat themselves without any frustration. Let me say something about frequency selection that is easy to overlook. On the amateur HF bands, there are portions of each band designated for specific modes and sometimes specific uses. The band plan for 20 meters, for example, designates 14,000 to 14.070 MHz primarily for CW operation, 14.070 to 14.099 for digital modes, and 14,100 to 14.350 for voice. Calling CQ with voice in the CW or digital segment is a mistake that will generate negative responses from other operators. Before you pick a calling frequency, confirm you are in the voice portion of the band. Within the voice portion, there are also informal calling frequencies, frequencies where stations go specifically to make initial contact before moving to another frequency to have the actual conversation. On 20 meters USB, 14,300 MHz is the international distress and calling frequency and should not be used for casual contacts. Other commonly used calling frequencies vary by region. Listening to a band for a while before you call CQ will give you a feel for where activity is concentrated. There is a concept called working split that you will encounter when trying to contact rare DX stations, stations in unusual or sought-after locations that attract large numbers of callers simultaneously. A station working split transmits on one frequency and listens on a different frequency or range of frequencies. This keeps their transmit frequency clear of the dozens of stations trying to call them. If you hear a station announce they are listening up 5 or listening up 5 to 10, they are telling you to transmit 5 to 10 kHz above their frequency. For your first contacts, you will not need to work split, but understanding what it means when you hear it is useful. A few words on operating etiquette that matter from your very first contact. Listen before you transmit. Always. This applies to checking if a frequency is clear, to waiting for the other station to finish before you respond, and to verifying band conditions before you call CQ. Identify yourself correctly, your call sign, at the beginning and end of every contact and every 10 minutes during extended contacts. This is both a regulation and a courtesy. Keep your transmissions reasonably concise. Long, uninterrupted transmissions are hard to copy and tie up the frequency. The conversational rhythm of HF voice operating is more turntaking than monologue. If you make a mistake, correct it and move on. Everyone does. The amateur radio community is generally patient with new operators, and most experienced operators will help if asked. If someone tells you your audio sounds off, or that you are on the wrong part of the band, or that you are too close to another station, take the feedback without defensiveness. It is almost always given in good faith, and finally, enjoy it. The first contact is memorable precisely because it is genuinely remarkable. You built or acquired a station, you learned enough to operate it, and you talk to a stranger hundreds or thousands of miles away using nothing but radio waves and the ionosphere.
