John Merrill Kirkman shares a thought-provoking message inspired by As a Man Thinketh about the power of our thoughts and the “garden” we cultivate in our minds. Using the analogy of planting seeds, this episode reminds listeners that whatever thoughts we repeatedly allow into our hearts will eventually shape our lives. Through scripture, faith, and practical encouragement, John teaches that we are not powerless victims of circumstance—we are spiritual gardeners choosing what grows inside us. Plant fear, and anxiety grows. Plant truth, gratitude, and faith in Jesus Christ, and a beautiful life begins to flourish.

The Garden of the Heart. I was flipping through some notes today when James Allen's classic as a man thinketh, and it really made me pause. It's wild how much power we really have over our inner world and how that connects to our spiritual journey. Picture your mind as a piece of land, I was thinking. It's a fertile garden, and here's the catch. Your garden doesn't care what you plant. Whatever seed you toss in, it'll grow. Plant corn, you get corn. Leave it alone or let the wind scatter some seeds and you'll end up with a wild patch of weeds and thorns. We all know about them dandelions. No matter what you do, they just show up in your grass. The soil doesn't judge the seed, it just helps it to grow. Our minds work kind of the same way. Ever wonder why life sometimes feels a bit chaotic or why we get stuck in cycles of quote-unquote suffering? If we look at the seeds we're planting, the main thoughts we let settle in, suddenly the results make a lot more sense. This isn't just modern positive psychology. It's an ancient truth. In the Old Testament, the book of Proverbs, 4, verse 23, it says, above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. When the Bible mentions the heart, it means that private inside place of your thoughts and intentions. So it's showing us that your life doesn't just happen by accidents, it follows our most persistent thoughts. Want peace? You can't fill your mind with resentment. Want purpose? You can't feel, you can't keep planting seeds like I'm not enough, or it will never work, or I'm not good enough, or I'm a failure, or I this is the way it always ends up, and just negative, negative, negative. James Allen reminds us that suffering is self-made. When our thoughts aren't lined up with truth, if life feels overwhelming today, take a moment to check on your own inner garden. Are you planting seeds of fear? They'll grow into a harvest of anxiety. Are you planting seeds of gratitude? They'll grow into a harvest of joy. You hold the master key to your own character. You're not just at the mercy of what happens to you, you're the architect of how you respond. So as you move through the day today, think of yourself as a disciplined gardener. When doubt or bitterness tries to sneak in, don't let it settle. Pull it up and plant something true, something good, something hopeful instead. Like I'm a child of God, I'm a disciple of Christ. He knows me, he loves me, I'm gifted, and he walks with me. And as I walk with Christ, my future is bright. Your life is moving in the direction of your dominant thoughts. What are you choosing to plant today? Go out there and grow something beautiful. Thanks for checking out Walking with the Savior Podcast daily.
