Have you ever felt like life is one giant uphill climb?

In this encouraging Walking With the Savior Daily episode, John Kirkman shares The Parable of the Bicycle, a simple but powerful reminder that difficult seasons don't mean something is wrong with you. Just like a bicycle is built for hills—not just smooth roads—we are built to grow through challenges, setbacks, and steep climbs.

John explores how faith, patience, character, and a deeper connection with Jesus Christ are often developed during life's uphill battles. When the road feels difficult, it's easy to wonder if you're failing or if something is broken. But what if the climb is actually shaping you into someone stronger, wiser, and more capable than you ever imagined?

Most importantly, you'll be reminded that the Savior isn't waiting for you at the finish line—He's beside you every pedal stroke of the journey. If you're facing a difficult season, this episode will inspire you to keep moving forward one step, one prayer, and one act of faith at a time.

The Parable of the Bicycle. This is John Merrill Kirkman with Walking with the Savior Podcast Daily Episode. Ever feel like life's a wild bike ride? Sometimes you're cruising downhill, wind in your hair, sometimes you're huffing and puffing up the world's steepest hill. Downhill, piece of cake? The wind in your face. Bonus points if you can pull off a motorcycle style slow motion. You barely even have to pedal. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Momentum is basically doing all the work for you. But uphill, every push counts. Your legs start dramatic protests, your legs burning like you just signed up for the tour de France. You start bargaining with the calves and wonder if you just should call it a day. And sometimes you look up and think, who put Mount Amherst on the trail in front of me today? There's a parable I love about a bicycle. Imagine someone gives you a beautiful bike. It's strong, dependable, perfectly built for the journey ahead. The giver smiles and says, the bike can take you incredible places. Duh, I already know that. At first the rider's thrilled. They coast downhills, enjoy the scenery, and feel free. But eventually the road changes. There are hills, rocks, muds, headwinds. And the rider starts thinking, maybe something's wrong with my bike. Maybe I'm failing. Maybe this journey isn't supposed to be this hard. Maybe there's something stuck in my wheel causing all this drag. But the truth is, the bite was never meant for only a smoother road. It was built for the climb. And so are we. One of the greatest misunderstandings in life is believing difficulty means we're doing something wrong. Sometimes we think if we are truly faithful, truly confident, truly spiritual, truly disciplined, or truly successful, life would feel easier all the time. But growth doesn't happen coasting downhill. Character is built uphill. Patience is built uphill. Faith in Christ is built uphill. Connection with the Savior is built uphill. And here's another part of the parable I love. When you're climbing a steep hill on a bike, balance actually becomes harder when you stop moving. You have to keep pedaling, even slowly, even awkwardly, even one tiny push at a time. Sometimes in life we think progress only counts and if it's dramatic. But often the most important victories are the quiet ones. Getting out of bed when it's hard, taking time to pray and communicate with your Heavenly Father. Trying again after failure. Showing kindness when you're tired, opening the scriptures, apologizing, choosing hope one more time. That's peddling. And eventually something beautiful happens. You reach higher ground. You see views you never could have seen before. You become stronger than the version of you that started the climb. And maybe most importantly, you discovered that the Savior wasn't at the top of the hill, waiting for you to get to him. He was beside you the whole way up. So if the road feels steep right now, don't assume your bike is broken. Don't assume your life is broken. Some roads are uphill because they lead somewhere worth going. Keep pedaling one push at a time, and trust that the climb is changing you into someone stronger, deeper, wiser, and more capable of joy than you could have ever imagined before.
