Growing in confidence. Today we're going to meet a man who felt exactly like many of us do. Fearful, inadequate, and convinced he wasn't the right person for the job. His name was Gideon. And his story, the book of Judges, shows us how ordinary, insecure people like us become extraordinarily confident when they learn to walk with the Savior. In Judges chapter 6, the children of Israel were being oppressed by the Midianites. Gideon is hiding in a wine press, secretly threshing wheat because he's afraid. He's not out on the battlefield, he's trying to stay invisible. Then the angel of the Lord, wisely understood as the Lord himself, Jesus Christ, Jehovah, appears to him and says, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valor. Judges 6, verse 12. But Gideon doesn't feel mighty at all. He immediately protests, O my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? And am I the I am the least of my father's house? He just is focused on himself, his problems, and who he is by looking in the mirror. Can you hear that lack of confidence? I'm one of the weakest of my family. I'm the least qualified. I'm not strong enough. Sound familiar? Maybe you've said something similar. I'm not good enough for this promotion. I freeze up when I speak in public. I'll never compete at the highest levels. But the Lord doesn't argue with Gideon's weakness. He simply gives him the same transforming invitation he gives us today. Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. Go in this thy might. In other words, walk with me, I will be with you. And Gideon chooses to obey. Even though he started with fear, he still asked for signs with fleece and stuff like that, kind of some weird stuff going on there. But as Gideon walked with the Lord, everything changed. With only 300 men, no swords in their hands, but trumpets and torches, God used him to defeat the massive Midianite army. Gideon became a mighty deliverer, a judge over Israel, and a man of bold faith, whose story is still told thousands of years later. The man who hid and fear became the leader who walked in divine power, all because he learned to walk with Jesus Christ, the Savior. Here are three powerful lessons I want you to grasp from Gideon that will be important in this journey, our journey to finding our divine confidence. Your weakness is not a disqualification, it simply points you to the need for the Savior and to walk with him. Number two, God doesn't call the confident and qualified, he qualifies the called as they walk with him. Gideon's fear and insecurity didn't stop God. It became the very place where God's power was made perfect. Confidence grows through relationship, not self-improvement alone. The Lord didn't say, Go build your courage for 10 years first, and I will be with ye. The more time you spend walking with Christ, the more his confidence naturally flows into you. Gideon didn't become confident by believing in himself more. He became confident by believing in the Savior who was with him. That is divine confidence. Confidence that doesn't come from you but flows through you. This week, I invite you to do what Gideon did. Every single day, pray the simple prayer out loud. Or something along these lines. Lord, today I choose to walk with you. Go with me. I will go with thee. Be with me as you were with Gideon. And I like you to just imagine, imagine the Savior standing by you as you walk, and that he's walking with you. The more you imagine that image, the more it will give you confidence. You feel weak and insecure, look towards him for that confidence-building reassurance. Then in the moment you feel fear or insecurity before a big game, before making a sales pitch or sales call, before a presentation, or before taking that step towards a relationship, quietly say in your heart, Savior, walk with me right now. Walk with me right now. So I'm not alone. Watch how his presence begins to quiet your fears and strengthen your steps.
