What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't your ability—it's your belief?
In this inspiring message, John Kirkman shares the incredible story of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile, a feat once believed to be impossible. He draws a powerful parallel to our spiritual lives, where fear, self-doubt, addiction, discouragement, and past mistakes can become barriers we mistakenly accept as permanent. Through Jesus Christ, those limitations can be broken. Christ sees our potential, not just our struggles, and His grace empowers us to become more than we ever thought possible.

For years, everyone thought running a mile in under four minutes was simply impossible. Athletes trained, coaches studied, experts analyzed, but the barrier was just impossible to budge. People didn't just think it was tough, they thought it couldn't be done. They thought the human that broke the four-minute barrier would die. Then came along Roger Bannister. On May 6, 1954, Bannister did what no one else had. He ran a three-minute 59.4 second mile race, breaking what everybody thought was impossible. But what happened next was what's most important. Once Bannister showed it was possible, other runners started breaking the mark as well. Suddenly, something that seemed impossible for decades started happening over and over and over again. What changed? It's not like people's body suddenly changed or something. The track was the same. The distance hadn't magically shrunk. What changed? People's belief. That mental barrier had finally come down. Spiritually, I think it's a lot like that for us. We all have our own version of the four-minute mile. We carry beliefs that tell us I'll never change. I'll always struggle with this weakness. I'll never be confident enough. I'll never be good enough. Or I cannot overcome my past mistakes. I'm not good enough for heaven. The adversary loves when we think like that because those thoughts convince us that growth is out of reach. They trick us into seeing our limitations as permanent. But Jesus Christ came to share a completely different message. Throughout his ministry, he invited people to believe beyond what they could currently see. The blind received sight. The broken were healed. The discouraged found hope. The sinner found forgiveness. The ordinary became extraordinary through him. Christ specializes in doing what seems impossible. When the Savior looks at you, he doesn't just see who you are right now, he sees who you can become. He sees potential where others see weakness. He sees possibilities where others see barriers. He sees a beloved child of God who's capable of so much more. More than you could ever realize. Just like those runners before Bannister, a lot of us have accepted limits that were meant never meant to define us. Maybe your barrier is fear. Maybe it's anxiety. Maybe it's addiction, discouragement, self-doubt, or just that nagging feeling you'll never be good enough. But the Savior invites us to look past those barriers. Not because we're strong enough on our own, but because his grace makes real growth possible. Paul taught, I can do all things through Christ. This is not just a motivational phrase, it's a spiritual reality. When we team up with Jesus Christ, those limits start to shift. Old beliefs begin to break. New possibilities start to open up. And little by little we become the person he has always known we could be. So today ask yourself what is the four-minute mile barrier in my life? What barrier have I accepted as impossible? And what might happen if I trusted Christ enough to believe that through him change is possible? Because sometimes the greatest miracle isn't breaking a record, it's breaking the limiting belief that it kept us from becoming who God has called us to become. And with Jesus Christ, what once felt impossible might be a lot closer than you think.
