The Secret to Lasting Purpose. Have you ever noticed that it's easier to keep going when you know why you're doing something or why you're doing it or you know why and you're committed to the why. Purpose drives persistence and perseverance. When your efforts are connected to something bigger than yourself, you work harder, endure longer, and grow faster. For years we've heard the advice follow your passion, chase your happiness, accomplish your dreams, reach for your goals, have bigger goals. But author Tom Rath offers a different perspective. He suggests that lasting fulfillment isn't found by looking deeper inside ourselves. It's found by looking outward, by making life better for someone else. In a world where technology can replace many skills, one thing it can never replace is a heart filled with Christ-like love and a willingness to bless another person. I believe the Savior taught this principle from the very beginning. Jesus Christ never lived a self-focused life. Every miracle, every conversation, every act of compassion pointed towards lifting someone else. His purpose was people, and when we choose to follow him, our purpose becomes people too. Ironically, the more we focus on ourselves, our success, our comfort, our happiness, etc., etc., the emptier we often feel. But when we ask, Lord, who needs my encouragement? Who can I serve? Who needs to feel your love through me? Something changes inside of us. Our problems often become smaller. Our faith becomes stronger. Our lives become more meaningful. Jesus taught, Whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. That's the great paradox of discipleship. We don't discover our lives by chasing them. We discover them by giving them away in kindness and service to others. As Tom Rath says, by making life better for someone else. Who that's deep. So today, don't spend all your energy asking, What's my purpose? Instead ask, Lord, whose life can I brighten today? Boom. Instead of praying for a friend who's hurting, ask the Lord, Lord, how can I help my friend who is hurting? Woo! As you answer those questions, you'll find yourself walking the same path the Savior did. A life of love, kindness, and service. And in the end, lasting purpose, which fuels the energy for life. And you'll discover that your deepest fulfillment comes not from what you accomplish for yourself, but from what Christ accomplishes through you. Woo!
