Walk the Next 200 Feet: Trusting Jesus One Step at a Time

What if God doesn't show you the entire path because He only wants you to take the next step? Imagine trying to drive from Boston to Los Angeles in complete darkness. Your headlights shine about 200 feet in front of you. You can't see the mountains you cross. You can't see the tomorrow's roads. You certainly can't see California. Yet if you simply keep driving those next 200 feet, become another 200 feet, and eventually you arrive in your destination, sunny California. I think that's how the Savior often leads. We want him to show us the entire plan, our entire future. Who will I marry? says the teenager. We want to know exactly how everything will work out. But most of the time, Jesus gives us enough light for just the next step. The scriptures remind us, Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. A lamp doesn't illuminate the whole journey. It gives enough light to take the next step. And think about ancient lamps. They were much less bright than our modern day lamps. And so to have a lamp as a guide for our feet literally might have meant two or three steps in front of us. Maybe today you're trying to strengthen your marriage or figure out your future after high school. Overcome a weakness, recover from a loss, deepen your faith, or become the person God created you to be. The destination can seem so far away. Don't focus on the entire journey. Focus on the next 200 feet. Maybe your next step is saying a sincere prayer or apologizing to somebody or asking the Savior to guide you. Maybe it's taking some time to read some scripture, forgiving somebody. You know, maybe you decide to attend church this week if you haven't been in a while. The Savior rarely asks us to climb the whole mountain at once. He simply says, follow me. And every time we choose to follow Him in one small act of faith, He gives us a little more light for the next stretch of the journey. I love the idea of celebrating the small victories along the way. At the end of each day, ask yourself, where did I see the Savior's help today? Maybe you felt a little bit of peace, maybe you resisted a temptation, maybe you showed some kindness and felt good inside, maybe you simply didn't quit. Look for the good in your life, and that's probably where you'll find Jesus Christ. Those small moments are evidence that Christ is a part of your life and he's working on changing you. His miracles are often quiet, almost unnoticed, until one day you look back and realize how far he has brought you. So if you can't see the whole road today, you're human. Don't be discouraged because Christ can see the whole road. Trust his light. Walk the next 200 feet. As you do, you'll discover that what seemed impossible wasn't accomplished in one giant leap.
