This week we’re joined by sisters Audrey and Allie Heck—two incredible people who have been part of our lives for years. From growing up on the soccer field to navigating college and life’s biggest transitions, this conversation is full of laughter, perspective, and heart.

We talk about what it was like for Audrey to be a student at Indiana University during one of the most exciting seasons in school history, Allie’s journey after graduating from North High School, and how sports have shaped each of their lives. Whenever I take her shopping, um, you can ask her whose money we're using, and she'll say, Uncle Cam's cash. So I can pay you out of Cam's cash. Where is Cam's Cash? Working.

He um so this is actually really funny because I just went to Cam and I went to Allie's high school graduation party, and so we sit down like at this table, and he is just like sitting there with his hands on the table, and he's disgusting. Like he's a he's not disgusting. Okay, he's a contractor, and his hands, like he works with like tar and like glue and collar man. Exactly. And his hands, like, he can never get them fully cleaned. Like, even if we go on vacation for a week, like after that week's up, there's like still like some remnants. And we all suggested that perhaps he would use some gloves or something that might protect his. Yeah, it's incredible.

Anna Welch. Anna Welcher. And then I think there was a couple others. She used to babysit us, Anna Welcher. Yeah. Okay.

I was really scared freshman year, but then like sophomore year, I was like, nah. Like her park.

Ivy Wayman? Was that before your time? This is before them. I don't know. All y'all did was pester me.

Like that's but it was funny. You take videos of me and put you put me on like Snapchat. Who knows what else you did? Like, you just like do the most ridiculous things.

Yeah, I didn't know what that was. Yeah. They were like, and like so I would take a picture of them and then it like took a picture of me. And they tricked me and then posted it everywhere.

The fans loved it. All right, but like as a coach, what are some of the things you remember like that she made you do?

SPEAKER_01 7:04

Like Oh my gosh, run until we were about to die. Run until you die. I remember, dude, the worst of it, and I still remember it so vividly. We lost a ball. A worst we lost a ball. We lost one single single ball. We didn't even lose it. The boys' team stole it. And yeah, it got stolen. You didn't believe it. And then here we are at a two-hour practice running the whole time, and it gets to the end, and we're just doing sprints, and you're just yelling and yelling, and it just wouldn't stop. Do a sprint for when you guys did this. Yeah. Sprint for this. It was just like a big thing.

I would ask you to do something that I couldn't do.

But I will say, like, I was like, they were speechless for that one. I wasn't the best shape of my life. Well, you were the toughest coach we had. Like I was in the best shape of my life with you.

Yeah, there you have it. That's good. I was too because sometimes when I got really stressed out, I would go on like sprint miles. Oh yeah.

Were you guys on the team that like at halftime? Were they on the team that what I think that was your very first year? Do you guys know about this? That you were playing Harrison and they were not playing to we were tied zero zero at halftime. Oh my god. And it was your first season as a coach. That's what it was. And um you I mean, Jody and I were in the stands like with all the parents because we always came to watch and we're like so excited for like her coaching and all that kind of stuff. But then people are also looking at us, do you know what I mean? Because she's hard. Anyway, and it's halftime, and the girls are like headed over to get a drink, and we hear her yell, get on the line. And they took their shin guards off. You have them take their shin guards off, and she ran them. Like, I don't what did you do? What did you make them do? I don't remember. It was like side to side. I mean, all right. Yeah, they were sprinting. They literally ran, except for like two minutes of the half, and then she gave them like water and stuff. I don't even think you talked to them. You just made them run, run, run, run, run, get the water, and you were like, be better.

Oh my god. Like it was so silent in the stands. Like all the parents were like, Yeah. Because against Harrison, that's just something. Well, we won. I mean, you and they were they like perked up for sure because I think they knew what.

Well, I think I told them like they didn't run at all the first half, so we might as well oh make it read what it was.

You know, that would make sense. I'm glad that wasn't y'all. I would have been upset if she treated y'all like that.

Yeah, there's like some type of river. I honestly forget what it is. You're not quite sure the name of it. That's okay. Yeah, I don't know the name. It might be Ohio or something. I mean the Ohio's here. I think it's the Ohio. But I don't really know. It's okay.

Um I was like talking to a family friend and I explained this multiple times, so I just heard this, but um she's like doing something that I'd be kind of interested in. She is like working about how like she's researching about how lead exposure like affects adolescents and like they're maturing. Yeah. Like the brain's maturing, and um then she was like exposure? Lead exposure. Are you crunchy? Crunchy? Yeah, yeah. Crunchy. Are you like what's that?

But anyways, lead exposure can lead to like it's like um the exposure is like increasing in like lower poverty areas, and so like they found lower poverty. Keep going. So, anyways, and then they have found that like um people with criminal history have a lot of lead like from the ink that they get tattooed in prison.

Well, I was pre-PA for like my first two years. And then I was like, I kind of want to be a doctor. But then all the doctors I work with are like, don't be a doctor. Like you're just don't be a doctor. So then I was like, okay, well, my our papa was a dentist, and our meme's always like, you guys need to follow in his footsteps. So then I was like, okay, I'll be a I'll be a dentist with a white coat. Like, that's awesome. Yeah. So I'll make a lot of money.

So that's what you're studying? So what's your like undergrad? Like, what's what will your degree be?

Community health.

And because that's like the easiest undergrad you can do for like pre-dental.

To switch to that. Yeah. Got it. So community health, and then how do you get like what's the path to dental school? Like, what does that look like?

So I will start studying for the DAT this junior year. Okay. And then I'll take it this this next summer. Okay. And then hopefully I pass the first time.

And then I'll start like applying to hopefully just IU. Okay.

I hated geometry too, so don't worry. Yeah. It's just so weird. Yeah, okay. So you'll study, you'll pass that test the first time, and then you apply to dental school. And you're hoping to go to IU.

Some of my friends like know people on the team. Like they lived in the same dorm as him or whatever.

Um basically it was homecoming weekend. And I I was like upset for some reason. And so my friend was like, let's go out. And so we were walking to go out to the frets, like as we do. And we're at a crosswalk, and basically I get hit by a car.

Oh my gosh, she says as she laughs, but it was very serious. Yes. Yeah.

Okay. Um, so then I mean, like, I don't remember like that really that whole month, like around the wreck.

You know, and so like it's I could cry right now thinking about it. Like, I mean, yeah, I'm medicated, so I'm not gonna cry. Yeah, but still helps everybody. Um, but I just remember her like talking about um, and I know I joke, but um, talking about like your like your tenacity to overcome it, like to get through it, to like not have it affect you, to I remember her telling me you were like running and they had to like slow you down because you were like, no, like I'm fine, like I can do all this stuff. And that is I mean, people who go through something super traumatic like that, like especially when it's like physical, mental, like you just said it. Like the people who had the same situations as you like weren't as progressing as much, which is just so cool. On how like Jesus was with you, you know, helping, but then like you were like, uh-uh, this isn't gonna, this isn't it. Yeah, it's not gonna define me. Um it's not, it happened, it's whatever, and I'm gonna roll with it and I'm gonna beat it and kick its butt. Yeah, I'm just too stubborn for that.

We're like, we're gonna pray for her, like right now, because we hadn't we just didn't know. We knew that was really serious, but we really just didn't know. And I mean, you're like one of Kayla's girls, which makes you I mean, gosh, I grilled you hot dogs. You're part of us too. So, you know, I mean, like we were we didn't need to know all the details in order to know that we needed to like pray for you and yeah, like seriously.

Yeah, and just I mean, that's like a a domino. What we do, yeah. And like the people who did the same thing that we asked them to. It's just yeah. So it's yeah, it's just really cool to like be able to talk about that. I mean, I know it's probably really hard to, especially for you. Like, I'm watching your face and it's kind of like I just can't even imagine, you know, but like overcoming that. And it's it's you know, when you go through something hard, that's like part of your story. And then it's like how you you either it's like therapy when you went to therapy. You're either gonna let it define you for the good or for the bad. And it's just really cool how you've like done that. I mean, heck, you went you went to school last semester. So it's yeah, yeah, it's incredible.

It was just like I don't know, it it might be bad to say, but I kind of like the whole time I had some like hope in me, like, you know, like just had like a sense like this is horrible, but like, like she's gonna it's gonna be okay. Like I had just had some type of like sense. And I mean, like the couple of days where she wouldn't like open her eyes like that was hard, but she started to like hit me and stuff, and so that's she like gradually like yeah, started coming around. Yeah, but like our family got through it really well together.

Yeah, so you just pull tight, don't you? In those moments, yeah. You just like hang on to each other and pull tight. Yeah, yeah. Well I like to think that would be like a Jesus kind of thing in you, like making you know yeah, for sure. It's gonna be okay.

He had to keep my mom like he saw him and my mom saw like the worst of it. I didn't see like the very worst of it, but I mean they got there pretty soon after within a few hours. She he had to like keep her, you know, yeah, stable.

Yeah. So yeah, because that's and he's your twin. So that's yeah, that's yeah, can't imagine for him too, you know.

I mean for any of you guys, but just having to shoulder yeah, yeah, just and my mom is just so inspiring in so many ways, but like during this time, her strength was crazy. Like my roommate and best friend who wasn't with me, but she called my mom and was just crying and was like, You need to come to Bloomington now. Like Audrey's been hurt, and my mom was calming her down. Yeah, like yeah, Emily was like not being able to like speak or breathe. And my mom was like, You just like calm down, like take a second, yeah. Yeah, it's just like she's crazy.

So yeah, and anytime I talk to your mom, like it, I mean, she was just just praying, you know. That's I mean, she's just an incredible like mother and leader, and like all those things. It was it's just it's really cool to have somebody like that in your corner, you know, and just like to see from a distance, you know. And I know you guys experience it firsthand all the time, but right just really cool, like the power of just a tight family, and yeah, just incredible. Yeah.

I'll never forget I moved you out to outside back and everyone thought we were crazy. And you thrived. Like you that I feel like that was your best position. And then like you, like moving and doing things and always looking to get better, but you were always like worried about doing the wrong thing. And like that makes you good too.
