You can recognize the pattern, understand where it came from, and still repeat it.

In this episode of Walk With Me, Dr. Gio explores the first pillar of the Walk With Me Method: Awareness. I explain why self-awareness is not simply thinking about yourself, analyzing your past, or knowing why you react the way you do. Real awareness is the ability to observe what is happening inside you without immediately becoming it.

Most automatic reactions begin before the words, choices, or behaviors we later regret. They begin with a sensation: tightness in the chest, heat in the face, a drop in the stomach, or the urge to fight, avoid, shut down, explain, or escape. In that brief moment, the nervous system activates, the mind creates a story, and an old identity prepares to repeat itself.

This episode explores the difference between being self-conscious and being conscious of self, how the nervous system and identity reinforce familiar patterns, and why awareness alone does not automatically create change.

I introduce a simple but powerful practice: notice the sensation, pause for ten seconds, name what is happening, and choose an intentional response instead of an automatic one.

Because the true power of awareness is not simply knowing your patterns. It is catching the pattern before it becomes your personality again.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

• Why understanding a pattern does not always stop it
• How your nervous system reacts before your mind creates a story
• The difference between self-consciousness and conscious self-awareness
• Why discomfort makes us fight, avoid, shut down, or escape
• How a ten-second pause can create space for a different choice
• Why awareness is the starting point for lasting personal growth and behavior change

Reflection question: What happens in the seconds after you become aware that you have been activated?

Walk with me. Because you can't change your life until you understand the virgin of you creating it. This is a space for honest conversations about the systems, patterns, and beliefs quietly shaping your life. I see the loop. I know the turn. I watched the bridge begin to burn. But even though I see the fire, I'm still the one who held the wire. Take a walk with me. I want to take a moment to acknowledge a couple of reviews I received this past week. With Holly Tot, who rated the podcast five stars, saying, I love the idea of walk with me. The value that is being dropped here is incredible. Can't wait for more episodes. And Liberating Kids, who also rated 5 stars, saying, This podcast is asking new and deeper questions about why we often still have challenges making changes, and I love it. More recently I've become more in touch with my nervous system, and I have to say it's been a game changer. The framework of the pillars is fascinating. I can't wait for more episodes or walks. Listening from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thank you both so much for taking the time to write a review. It really means so much to me to read the impact I'm having with you all. Let's keep walking and growing together. Last episode, we mapped out the eight pillars of your internal architecture. We realize that most of us are trying to fix our lives in the wrong place. Today, we start at the very beginning. The pillar that makes everything else possible. And that is awareness. For as long as I can remember, I've had a high level of awareness of myself, of other people, of my environment. I don't know if it was something I was born with, or something I developed growing up in the ghetto of South Jersey, where being aware wasn't optional. Or maybe it came from years of training in martial arts, reading body language, eyes, energy in a room. That awareness helped me. It protected me, saved me more times than I can count. But here's the part that haunted me for the longest time. That same awareness brought a lot of pain. Because I didn't know what to do with it. There were moments I knew I should have spoken and didn't. Moments I should have stayed quiet instead, but reacted. I could see what was happening, but I couldn't change what I did. And in those moments, awareness wasn't power. It was a trap. The trap in self-development is to believe that seeing a pattern is the same or equating as changing it. You understand your past, you can explain exactly why you react the way you do. And you think, I get it now. I can break the chains, I can set myself free. But you've lived long enough to know that's a lie. You can understand your anger and still explode. You can see your avoidance and still disappear. You can recognize the pattern and still repeat it. On our map, awareness is the first pillar, and a lot of people misunderstand it. You may think awareness is thinking about yourself. That is an awareness. That's being self-conscious, not conscious of self. And the difference between the two is mountains and valleys apart. Being self-conscious is being paralyzed by the paint job of your house, obsessed with what others think of your hot pink door or vomit green house. Being conscious of self is understanding the structure of your house, your habits, your language, your values. See, awareness isn't thinking about thinking. It's observing. It's the ability to see what's happening without immediately becoming it. It's the ability to witness your internal world without being consumed by it. It's becoming the shrewd observer of the truth. You thank Jim Rohn for that quote. And for most people, that gap doesn't exist. So here's a question for you. If you are aware, what happens in the seconds after awareness appears? Every reaction has a beginning, and it begins much earlier than most people think. Before the words, before the decision, there is a sensation, a tightening in your chest, a drop in your stomach, the heat in your face, or sometimes numbness. This is your nervous system speaking before your mind even has time to tell a story. And in that tiny window, your identity is already preparing to repeat itself because familiar feels safe. None of these pillars move alone. They activate each other fast. So fast, most people mistake the whole chain for that's just who I am. Just who they are. Your identity is challenged. Uh you really like throne of glass? I prefer Akatar. Boom! Your nervous system fires into fight mode. What did you say about Ailen Galathinius? And then your mind creates the story. Well obviously, nothing is wrong with me and my love for Throne of Glass. They are the peasants. They're the problem. My wife is a big fan of Throne of Glass series, and there appears to be two factions going at it, the Avatar and the TOG fans. This is much deeper than my example. But you get my point. It happens in a split second. Fast enough to keep harvesting what you've been planting. And if you don't like the harvest, you have to become aware enough to realize you're the one who planted the seeds. And in this moment, it is what almost everyone misses. Because it's uncomfortable. And discomfort makes you move fast. You fight, you avoid, you shut down, you joke. Like I do. You escape. Not consciously, but automatically. So even though you're aware, you're still reacting. Which means nothing changes. Awareness isn't about knowing your patterns. It's about catching the moment before the pattern takes over. That's the observer. The part of you that can say, something is happening right now without immediately becoming it. And that leads us to something simple but powerful. And that is the pause. The real power of awareness is not knowing the pattern. It's catching the pattern before it becomes your personality again. That's what leads us to the pause. Now, let me be clear, the pause is not control. Not at first. It's not suppression either. And it's definitely not toxic positivity. The pause is simply staying a few seconds longer than you usually do. Now believe me, it sounds simple until the moment a situation activates you and you want to run through a wall. But it's staying with the heat. Staying with the discomfort. Staying without fixing, explaining, fighting, or escaping. Because when you don't react immediately, something subtle starts to happen. Not all at once, but enough to create space. Inside that space, the old identity loses momentum. Inside that same space, choice becomes possible. So if the pause is so powerful, why don't we do it? Because the pause really feels like powerlessness in the moment. And a lot of us learned early on that powerlessness isn't safe. So instead, we do something, I mean anything. We fix. We explain. We get louder. We shut down. We numb out. We fight. Is it because we're weak? No. No. It's because no one taught us that staying present is strength. So let's make this simple. Next time an event activates you, don't try to fix your mind. Don't try to fight or explain. Do this instead. Notice the sensation, not the story, the feeling. Where is it in your body? Use the pause, that ten second rule. Don't act, don't speak, just stay. Name it quietly. Then choose. Not the automatic action, the intentional one. Real change starts in something so small, most people never notice it. A breath. A sensation. A pause. In that pause, two versions of you exist at the same time. The one you've been repeating and the one that's actually possible. Awareness lets you see both. As we keep walking, this is where we begin. And what you'll start to notice next is that the patterns you keep observing are protecting a version of you that still believes it has to survive a certain way. And that's where we're going next. Identity, the blueprint. Because you can't change what you don't see. And now you're starting to see. As we finish our walk for today, remember, you are not here to perform growth, you are here to understand yourself clearly enough to live differently. This is Walk With Me, because you can't change your life until you understand the version of you creating it. Follow the show, leave a review.
