last week, Felicia, our pastor of spiritual formation, she started off this conversation and talked about the necessity of starting in prayer. 00:00:49.600 --> 00:01:02.799 And, you know, if you haven't gotten a chance to listen to that yet, I strongly encourage you after this, at some point, you need to go back and just hear her challenge to us, because that's really where this conversation uh and know that this series starts off with prayer. 00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:35.359 But you know, as I've thought about um being bold, I I thought about this story that I had when I was 11 years old, and especially because the sun's out and it's been so nice, um, it made me think back to when I was a kid. 00:01:35.519 --> 00:01:41.760 Um back in the day before there was social distancing and and stuff like that, we had this thing called summer camps. 00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:46.799 And at a summer camp, a whole bunch of kids would get together and get to do some fun activities. 00:01:46.959 --> 00:01:52.959 And one of my favorite things that my parents signed me up for uh was something called sailing and kayaking camp. 00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:59.599 I grew up in a little beach town called Ventura where we also had a harbor, so that's where I would go um once a summer basically. 00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:02.879 And I remember vividly just one day. 00:02:03.200 --> 00:02:14.159 One day where uh at the end of the week, what we would do is we would kayak across the harbor uh and end up at this like little place where there's an arcade and an ice cream shop. 00:02:14.319 --> made our way back to this the part of the harbor where we started, um, and we were just paddling. 00:02:54.400 --> 00:02:58.639 And all of a sudden, uh the wind started to shift a little bit. getting a lot harder to go forward. 00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:16.080 Um, and I gotta be honest with you, man, it was so tough for me that I wasn't used to it. 00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:18.960 I remember we were going there and there was no problem at all. 00:03:19.199 --> 00:03:26.479 But all of a sudden there's some resistance, the wind was kind of pushing against us that I didn't think I could do, and I kind of just gave up. 00:03:26.639 --> 00:03:31.759 Um, and my friend who's doing a lot of the work, he also gave up because he couldn't carry both of our weight. 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:33.039 Uh so there we were. 00:03:33.199 --> 00:03:41.680 So there we were, uh singing in kayak, really going nowhere, well, actually going backwards, uh, until it was close to us getting picked up. 00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:49.120 So my friend's mom, she sees us and she she sees that we're kind of just stranded and kind of stuck in the harbor. 00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:54.479 And she frantically like goes to our camp counselors to go get some help. 00:03:54.639 --> 00:04:07.919 And all the all the like, meanwhile, while we're waiting for help, we see some of our other like camp uh friends like just passing by us, kind of just wondering like what's happening, or not even recognizing that we were having trouble. 00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:18.000 Um, so along comes some camp counselors, grabs us and takes us over, and we kind of just did the walk of shame and had to admit that we kind of gave up and gave in. 00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:26.560 Um, and kind of just had to admit that we admitted defeat because we couldn't, uh we weren't used to paddling against resistance. 00:04:27.680 --> 00:04:38.959 And the funny thing about that silly story about me as an 11-year-old is that it actually really speaks to this pervasive perspective that we have as Christians sometimes. 00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:51.120 That when the winds change and there's resistance, when we start to feel uncomfortable and there's some kind of opposition, our our tendency is to fold or to give in. 00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:58.079 Our natural reaction, and I know this is true for me, like thinking about that story, is that we just want to give up. 00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:01.439 We want to shrink back when we're afraid. 00:05:02.079 --> 00:05:08.800 And I don't think I'm too far off when I say that living as a Christian in America, like that it's kind of amplified a little bit. 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:09.360 Right? 00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:20.000 We're not too accustomed to living like Christians in the rest of the world who have faced certain persecution, a lot more hardships, um, are outside of the majority. 00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:28.160 And man, like even just living like an American, we are told that we should chase comfort and prosperity. 00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:33.439 And when we're not getting those things, that we start to feel uncomfortable. 00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:45.199 What when hardship comes and we're not getting the comfort and prosperity that we're supposed to be achieving, we think that something's wrong, that this pain shouldn't be here. 00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:49.839 Uh, that we think that this isn't good or that God cannot use this. 00:05:51.120 --> 00:06:04.319 And you know, in this season, for many and again, if not all of us, has been filled with a lot of opposition, a lot of pushback, a lot of fear, a lot to be afraid of. 00:06:05.199 --> 00:06:09.279 And the question we start to ask is how how do we live boldly when? 00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:10.399 Dot dot dot. 00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:11.759 You fill it in, right? 00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:15.360 How do we live boldly when the world is facing a global pandemic? 00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:18.879 How do we live boldly when my plans have changed? 00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:23.120 How do we live boldly when my business is facing extreme hardship? 00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:26.240 How do we live boldly when my economic future is in peril? 00:06:26.480 --> 00:06:41.519 How do we live boldly when I don't know what to say, or I'm afraid I'll say the wrong thing, or I'll get pushback for saying the right thing against things that are unjust, like racism. 00:06:42.079 --> 00:06:48.800 And that's where I want to go to today is in the face of a lot of fear and in the face of a lot of opposition, how do we live boldly? 00:06:49.519 --> 00:06:54.480 You know, facing fear has is nothing new for the church. 00:06:54.720 --> 00:07:05.120 And where I want to look to today is in Acts chapter 8, just verses 1 to 8, where we see the church is facing opposition and fear, and how their decision to live boldly moved the church forward. 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:10.480 But really, before we do that, I think we need some context before what happens. 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:19.279 The two chapters before uh chapter 8, uh we're introduced to this man named Stephen, who's kind of this rising leader in the church. 00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:25.839 Uh, he's chosen among the people to help lead, um, and what he does is he steps up to help serve the poor. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:33.680 But at the same time, he's also um going to the temple court and teaching and preaching the way of Jesus. 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:43.360 And the religious group in charge at that time, uh, the ones who had authority, they started to feel threatened by the things that Stephen was teaching. 00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:50.959 You see, the things that Jesus, uh the the things about Jesus that Stephen taught was uncomfortable for them. 00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:59.040 These temple leaders, they didn't like it because it would utterly disrupt the power structure that they were so accustomed to. 00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:05.839 The thing that made them feel comfortable, the thing that made their ways of life easy for them. 00:08:06.639 --> 00:08:10.560 It threatened that very way that they looked at the world. 00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:20.800 And the way my Bible says it, I love it, is that these men were so fixed on this religious system that was working in their favor that Acts chapter 6, verse 10 says this about these men. 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:28.720 They could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he, Stephen, was speaking. 00:08:30.079 --> 00:08:31.360 So what do they do, right? 00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:32.559 They're getting upset. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:36.799 They're not realizing that what he's teaching is the way of Jesus. 00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:38.720 They have Stephen arrested. 00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:48.799 They set up the sham trial where they get these false witnesses to testify against him, saying that he's preaching heresy, that the crowd is starting to get more and more upset. 00:08:48.879 --> 00:08:56.159 Uh, and they're saying that he's actually the things that he's teaching will be a threat, that it will end up destroying the temple that they love. 00:08:56.799 --> 00:08:58.480 So, what does Stephen do? 00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:02.559 Stephen, what he decides to do is he preaches a message, right? 00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:32.799 He responds with a sermon and he gives this brief overview of the entire Bible, and he tells this compelling story about Abraham, Joseph, Moses, and all the prophets, how time and time again the people of God, Israel, rejects these teachers, that for hundreds of years God would send these people to teach uh Israel, God's people, about him, and they would reject them, they would persecute them. 00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:37.840 And Stephen goes on to the uh keeps going and says, and he brings it to Jesus. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.320 He says the same thing happened to Jesus. 00:09:40.639 --> 00:09:44.159 God himself was persecuted by his own people. 00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:51.919 And then Stephen brings it all the way home, and he says, In this moment, the same thing is happening. 00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:57.440 He he calls out the people that are rejecting his teaching and says, It is happening again right now. 00:09:57.679 --> 00:09:59.519 You are rejecting God. 00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:16.639 So the crowd, obviously, right, they get upset, anger starts to rise, and they start to pick up stones one by one, and they start hurling them at Stephen until eventually Stephen becomes the first martyr of the church. 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:24.159 And it's at this moment that we start start in the verse, first verse of chapter 8, and it reads like this. 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:27.919 And Saul approved of his execution. 00:10:28.320 --> 00:10:44.559 We're introduced to this character named Saul, who on this side of history we would know uh as the Apostle Paul, and more on that later, but we're introduced to him, and the verse goes on and says, And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem. 00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:50.000 Jerusalem is where the story has taken place in Acts so far, up until this point. 00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:56.639 And they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles, verse 2. 00:10:56.879 --> 00:11:01.120 Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:10.399 But Saul was ravaging the church and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. 00:11:11.440 --> 00:11:18.480 Man, if there was ever a time for the young church to be afraid, it was now, right? 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:19.360 It was now. 00:11:19.519 --> 00:11:26.159 It's in these first three verses that we see the direct opposition that the church was facing. 00:11:27.039 --> 00:11:32.080 This man named Saul from the Roman Empire, he approves of this injustice against the church. 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:37.759 He he stands over Stephen's body and says, I approve, right, that this is good. 00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:44.080 And as a result, the the Jesus followers are also scattered throughout the region. 00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:52.799 And more than that, that same authority figure, Saul, he's going around continuing in injustice against the Jesus followers. 00:11:53.360 --> 00:12:12.320 Their own brothers and sisters in the faith who were committed to the way of Jesus and his upside-down kingdom being declared to this people, they're thrown in jail as they stand up against the authority in that day and they're met with incredible resistance, much to be afraid of. 00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:20.000 And you know, when we when we look at passages like these, we we have to remember, like, they're they're describing to us what's happening. 00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:24.000 They're not exactly prescriptive, something that we've taught at a wake here before, right? 00:12:24.080 --> 00:12:37.919 It's not like I'm not saying that for you to experience opposite opposition or persecution, you have to be um, you have to be stoned or thrown into jail, or a guy named Saul has to come and like take you and throw you into a prison. 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:42.720 No, but but instead we learn about what we can do in the face of fear. 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:45.360 We we learn God's wisdom in that. 00:12:46.559 --> 00:13:04.080 And when we think of the many things that we can be afraid of right now, instead we learn that in the face of fear, in the face of these people seeing that their dear friend being murdered, other loved ones being thrown in jail, we learn that we should expect resistance. 00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:04.639 Right? 00:13:04.720 --> 00:13:09.840 What when we are committed to Jesus' way, there will be opposition. 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:15.279 There will be things that we will fear, there will be certain pushback. 00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:23.120 And and I don't know what what it is exactly for you right now, but but I do want to give us two camps to kind of like put them in. 00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:23.600 Right? 00:13:23.759 --> 00:13:26.000 Maybe it's external opposition. 00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:30.480 A lot of my friends, maybe you you guys are engaged, right? 00:13:30.559 --> 00:13:32.639 And your plans to be married are turned upside down. 00:13:32.720 --> 00:13:34.399 You don't know how to move forward. 00:13:34.720 --> 00:13:38.080 Maybe you've lost significant income because of COVID-19. 00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:42.559 Maybe because of the current climate, you've had to move to a different part of the world. 00:13:42.799 --> 00:13:45.679 Um, maybe you have to reconsider your career. 00:13:45.919 --> 00:13:47.840 Maybe you've had to lay people off. 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:53.120 Maybe as you speak, for those without a voice, you're taking shots left and right. 00:13:53.759 --> 00:14:03.679 And maybe as you speak out against racial injustice and the oppressive systems in our country, you are risking relationship and financial security. 00:14:04.480 --> 00:14:10.879 All this, right, is obvious external pushback, obvious external opposition. 00:14:11.919 --> 00:14:17.279 And this passage, what what we what we're learning so far is that we should expect it, right? 00:14:17.360 --> 00:14:26.159 That this passage is actually an echo of what Jesus says in John's gospel, that in this world you will have tribulation or great trouble. 00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:27.360 Right? 00:14:27.519 --> 00:14:28.960 Jesus promises us that. 00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:31.279 So we shouldn't be too surprised by it. 00:14:32.559 --> 00:14:38.240 But you know, there's also a second camp of resistance that I think we need to be aware of. 00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:42.240 I want us to also be aware of internal opposition. 00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:48.559 You see, because there's this propensity that we all have towards sin that we carry. 00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:57.519 And saying it, it's not just like an action or a thought or something we do or say, rather, it's more like a disease that we carry. 00:14:58.240 --> 00:15:13.519 And that disease, sin, moves us towards comfort or complacency or apathy or selfishness, especially in the middle of a global pandemic or when there's there's civil unrest in our country. 00:15:13.679 --> 00:15:33.919 And it's because of that disease that we tend to move towards selfishness and comfort, which is an often direct competition with the sanctification or the forming of Jesus that God wants to do in our lives, that God wants to do in all of Jesus' followers. 00:15:34.879 --> 00:15:36.000 Sanctification, right? 00:15:36.080 --> 00:15:41.679 It's it's the work of God making us more like the men and women we were created to be. 00:15:43.519 --> 00:15:49.600 And because of sin, that when God is doing that work in us, we reflexively want to shy away. 00:15:50.480 --> 00:15:52.480 We don't want to be uncomfortable. 00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:54.799 We we like the way things are. 00:15:55.440 --> 00:15:58.480 Uh we don't want to sacrifice or sacrifice more. 00:15:58.879 --> 00:16:01.200 We're satisfied with the lives that we have. 00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:06.080 But you see, God wants to do far more in us and with us. 00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:14.879 And he has this far better vision for our lives than we often have for ourselves, for the life, for our own lives and for the lives around us. 00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:21.440 He wants us to be more like the people we were created to be, and we are often resistant to that. 00:16:21.919 --> 00:16:26.559 We want to cover our ears, shield our eyes, um, and just refuse. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:30.080 And that's why we need the church, right? 00:16:30.240 --> 00:16:36.240 That's why we need brothers and sisters who will help call us out of these ways of sin. 00:16:37.279 --> 00:16:44.639 When we refuse to see these things on our own, we need brothers and sisters who will lovingly call us into the kingdom of God. 00:16:45.360 --> 00:16:53.600 Because when the Spirit is working in us, we need to understand that we're gonna have internal opposition that wants to be resistant to it. 00:16:54.399 --> 00:16:56.399 And I I love verse 2, right? 00:16:56.639 --> 00:17:01.679 It says this in opposition, we feel uh we can still feel all of our human emotions. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:08.240 Verse 2 says, Devout men, they buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. 00:17:09.440 --> 00:17:12.880 I mean, the church was facing a really tough blow, right? 00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:24.000 A dear friend, this leader who stepped up to serve the poor, they lost, they lost Stephen in an evil and terrible way. 00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:30.559 And what I love is that the early church, they weren't forced to move past the lament that was necessary. 00:17:31.359 --> 00:17:38.960 They got to feel the pain that comes from evil and embrace the sadness that accompanies it. 00:17:39.519 --> 00:17:42.960 They got to feel all the all the pain and all that sadness. 00:17:43.200 --> 00:17:46.160 And to learn that being bold doesn't mean you have to stuff your feelings. 00:17:46.319 --> 00:17:48.160 I think that's another thing that we tend to think of. 00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:52.480 It's like being bold means you you just are a robot and emotionless. 00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:53.039 No. 00:17:53.359 --> 00:18:01.680 What God is teaching us in this passage is we have to embrace the sadness, we have to embrace the hurt, we have to embrace our true feelings, right? 00:18:01.839 --> 00:18:03.200 Jesus teaches us that. 00:18:03.519 --> 00:18:07.839 When his friend Lazarus dies and he hears of it, he weeps. 00:18:08.640 --> 00:18:16.160 Even though a few verses later he knows that he's gonna raise him from the dead, Jesus shows us that we can still experience the full range of human emotion. 00:18:20.559 --> 00:18:25.680 And when we recognize that Jesus is doing a work, we must simultaneously move boldly with him. 00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:30.880 It's okay to have heartbreak, to mourn the way of life that we were comfortable with. 00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:34.160 It's okay to mourn leaving a place that we loved. 00:18:34.400 --> 00:18:40.640 It's okay to mourn that we have been complacent and blind to injustice to our black brothers and sisters. 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:44.240 And we can we can mourn all that. 00:18:45.599 --> 00:18:54.640 And honestly, I think this is going to be, there's gonna be a great level of humility that this will take for most of us, if again, not all of us. 00:18:55.279 --> 00:18:58.480 Like we have to be humbled by the Holy Spirit. 00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:00.640 We can hear all of this, right? 00:19:00.720 --> 00:19:05.920 We we can hear this message and be like, yes, yes, those people over there, they need to change. 00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:10.720 They need to be more humble, they need to extend grace and love. 00:19:11.839 --> 00:19:16.319 But if that's what we're thinking right now, I think we need to take a pause. 00:19:16.400 --> 00:19:17.839 I think we're missing it. 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:23.119 I think we're not realizing that we need to submit ourselves humbly to God first. 00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:30.240 We need to examine ourselves and see where do we honestly need to mourn? 00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:38.240 Because there's things in us that need to die, that we need to mourn before resurrection can happen. 00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:46.160 And you see, the the the way the early church mourned for Stephen, it would have been crying for days. 00:19:46.480 --> 00:19:51.039 It would have been great sadness, an extended time of pain. 00:19:51.839 --> 00:20:03.200 And the best part that about lament that we learn is that when we properly express our emotions, is that it allows us to move forward in bold action. 00:20:03.440 --> 00:20:05.680 And that's what we see in verse four. 00:20:07.359 --> 00:20:11.920 Verse four reads, Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. 00:20:12.559 --> 00:20:16.480 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 00:20:16.640 --> 00:20:23.279 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. 00:20:23.519 --> 00:20:30.319 For unclean spirits crying out with a loud voice came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 00:20:30.880 --> 00:20:33.279 Gosh, this section blows my mind. 00:20:33.440 --> 00:20:33.759 Right? 00:20:33.920 --> 00:20:41.359 As all of these Jesus followers were scattered in the middle of their persecution, they went about preaching the word. 00:20:42.319 --> 00:20:43.680 That's incredible. 00:20:44.160 --> 00:20:53.440 Because if I'm honest in my heart of hearts, if I if I um were just completely real with myself, I want to take care of myself first. 00:20:54.240 --> 00:20:58.319 I don't care about what's going on with others until I make sure I'm good. 00:20:58.480 --> 00:20:58.880 Right? 00:20:58.960 --> 00:21:05.359 But but these Jesus followers, they knew that God supersedes any circumstances. 00:21:06.799 --> 00:21:11.599 And you see, up until this point in the story, the church was growing in Jerusalem, right? 00:21:11.680 --> 00:21:16.400 But because of Stephen's death and Saul's persecution, they are scattered. 00:21:16.799 --> 00:21:21.920 And this is important because the author of Acts, Luke, he's telling us something in this. 00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:34.559 Because at the beginning of the book, Luke writes that Jesus tells us this, verse 1.8, you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 00:21:35.039 --> 00:21:43.599 And you know, Luke writing this is telling us that there is nothing getting in the way of God and his mission being accomplished. 00:21:43.759 --> 00:21:55.119 That no man made opposition can truly stop what got for or can truly stop God's effort of restoration and healing in a broken and hurting world. 00:21:55.519 --> 00:22:08.640 Because even though these religious elites were trying to squash This revolution that Jesus approved of, God uses that evil and
