00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:39.040 Just a slob like one of us. 00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:49.040 Just a stranger on a bus trying to make his way home. 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:52.319 Just sad. 00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:58.640 But ask the question: what if God was one of us? 00:01:59.439 --> 00:02:04.319 Maybe a better question is what if God became one of us? 00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:11.919 And if God really did become one of us, what would it mean for all of us? 00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:19.680 You know, Jesus, he was traveling with his disciples to Caesarea Philippi. 00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:23.360 It's about 25 miles north of Galilee. 00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:26.240 And ministry was going great. 00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:28.719 I mean, he was just blowing up. 00:02:28.800 --> 00:02:29.759 He was big time. 00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:36.080 Thousands of people were flocking to hear him speak and see the miracles he was doing. 00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:37.680 And this was problematic. 00:02:37.840 --> 00:02:40.000 The religious leaders really didn't like it. 00:02:40.159 --> 00:02:43.360 In fact, they were uh they wanted to take him out. 00:02:43.599 --> 00:02:47.759 And so he decided to do a little staff retreat with the disciples. 00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:58.080 He decided to head on up out of the religious center of Jerusalem and out even out of Galilee, on up to the Gentile city of Caesarea Philippi. 00:02:58.159 --> 00:03:03.680 And on the way, he sees this as a moment to develop and to teach his disciples. 00:03:03.759 --> 00:03:09.199 And he asked them this question who do people say that I am? 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:19.039 And as the disciples were kicking it around, they said, you know, some think you're John the Baptist who had been killed, and we think they think he's come back to life. 00:03:19.199 --> 00:03:23.360 Others think you're a prophet of old, like Elijah or Jeremiah. 00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:34.400 And then Jesus turns and looks at him, and maybe there was this pause, and he just says, But you, who do you say that I am? 00:03:35.680 --> 00:03:41.439 And Peter, the unofficial spokesperson for the disciples, speaks up. 00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:45.919 And he's about to utter words that he's never spoken out loud. 00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:48.159 He's only had hunches inside. 00:03:49.120 --> 00:04:10.240 But these hunches have come from walking with Jesus, learning from him, of watching Jesus give sight to those that are blind, watch watching Jesus speak and the wind and the waves obey him, watching Jesus raise a dead girl back to life. 00:04:10.400 --> 00:04:12.639 And so he begins to utter this. 00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:26.160 And I don't know if he just didn't, you know, just kind of clear his throat, and he says, You are the Messiah or the Christ, the anointed one, the son of the living God. 00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:30.720 You are not just sent from God, is what he's saying. 00:04:30.879 --> 00:04:34.480 You're the son of God, you're God himself. 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:44.480 You see, at the center of Christianity is not a philosophy, it's not teaching or rules to live by. 00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:52.480 At the center of Christianity is a person, at the center of Christianity is the person of Jesus. 00:04:52.879 --> 00:05:00.160 And you know, Jesus never said, believe in my teachings, or I'm actually going to point the way to God. 00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:02.480 He said something radically different. 00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:04.319 He said, believe in me. 00:05:04.959 --> 00:05:09.040 Put your faith and your hope and your trust in me. 00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:12.079 And I'm not showing the way the God. 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:14.560 I am the way to God. 00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:16.480 I am the truth. 00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:18.639 I am the life. 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:29.120 And so the most important question you'll ever ask is who do you say Jesus is? 00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:34.560 Answering that, who exactly is Jesus? 00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:38.800 I mean, what do Christians believe about Jesus? 00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:47.199 And if God, if God really did become one of us, what does it mean for all of us? 00:05:47.920 --> 00:06:00.800 Well, it's in the creed that spent the apostles' creed that spends the most time uh unpacking exactly who Jesus is. 00:06:00.879 --> 00:06:16.560 And and it actually has five affirmations about who this Jesus is, and you can sum them up in in just five words deity, humanity, history, victory, and sovereignty. 00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:25.439 Like if you want to know who Jesus is, deity, humanity, history, victory, and sovereignty. 00:06:26.399 --> 00:06:29.279 Who exactly is Jesus? 00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:38.639 Well, the apostles' creed begins this way I believe, I put my hope, my trust in Jesus Christ. 00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:41.920 Now that's not his last name, that's his title. 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:46.319 He is the anointed one of God or Messiah. 00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:50.079 He is the only Son, our Lord. 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:52.480 He is God's Son, our Lord. 00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:54.639 And who exactly is Jesus? 00:06:54.800 --> 00:06:57.439 First, Jesus is deity. 00:06:57.600 --> 00:06:59.360 He is fully God. 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:05.199 Jesus isn't just a godly man, he isn't just a good man, a good teacher. 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:09.839 Jesus is a hundred percent God. 00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:18.399 Yeah, no, when we think about Jesus and his deity, we actually need to actually talk about the Trinity. 00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:35.759 And as Christians, we believe uh in the Trinity, meaning there is one God revealed in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:50.240 That they are co-eternal, they are co-equal, they're uncreated, neither blending their personalities nor dividing their essence, that Jesus is in very nature God. 00:07:50.720 --> 00:07:55.040 One, the Nicene Creed would say that he is begotten of the Father. 00:07:55.199 --> 00:08:01.759 He is not created or made, one in being with the Father. 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:11.279 And we see this from Genesis all the way back to Revelation, and we see the unity of God, the oneness, and yet the Trinity at play. 00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:21.759 Even in the Genesis account of how the world began, in Genesis 1, it says it this way: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:08:21.920 --> 00:08:33.840 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters, that there was one God, and yet the Spirit of God active. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:50.480 And when God was making humanity goes on to say, then God, singular, said, Let us make mankind in our image plural, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:58.960 That God is eternal, unity in perfect relationship. 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:13.919 See, it is the Trinity that we are created in the image of needing relationship, and that God has always and forever been sufficient and in perfect unity and relationship. 00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:32.080 And so John, the gospel writer, picks it up this way: the apostle taking back the same language of the Genesis count in speaking of Jesus and says, In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:35.120 He was with God in the beginning. 00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:37.039 Through him, all things were made. 00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:41.759 Without him, nothing that uh was made that has been made. 00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:52.639 That Jesus is God and very God, that he was the creator and sustainer and maker of all that we see. 00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:57.120 And so when we think of Jesus, it's not just a godly man, he is God. 00:09:57.759 --> 00:10:09.679 In fact, uh Colossians would say it this way: that the Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:24.240 For in him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through him and for him. 00:10:24.559 --> 00:10:30.240 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:32.960 And so, who exactly is Jesus? 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:35.279 The first thing is he's deity. 00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:38.320 He is Jesus, is fully God. 00:10:38.799 --> 00:10:41.120 Secondly, he's humanity. 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:43.759 He's not just fully God. 00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:47.039 Jesus is then fully man. 00:10:47.440 --> 00:10:51.679 The creed goes on to say, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 00:10:51.840 --> 00:11:01.759 Remember that spirit hovering over the waters, the Creator Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, humanity. 00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:10.799 And as we think of Jesus, we think of the incarnation, that Jesus is both fully God and fully man. 00:11:11.360 --> 00:11:16.559 He's not just like part God and part man or some sort of new being. 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:27.120 He is 100% God and 100% man all at the same time, without confusion, without change, without division. 00:11:27.600 --> 00:11:38.399 John would say it again this way a little bit later on in the chapter verse 14, he said, The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:47.759 We've seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:53.759 That Jesus was a hundred percent man at the same time. 00:11:53.919 --> 00:12:16.000 And the author of Hebrews would say it this way: Since the children have flesh and blood, he, speaking of Jesus, too shared in their humanity, so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death, that is the devil, and freed those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:32.320 For this reason, he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:33.919 Now think about this. 00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:41.200 Jesus fully God, fully divine, and then fully man, and what this means is he was hungry. 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:49.679 He's been hurt, he's experienced pain, he's been betrayed. 00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:57.039 Later on, the author of Hebrews would say it this way: that Jesus was tempted in every way and yet was without sin. 00:12:57.200 --> 00:13:01.919 Jesus lived the life we could never live. 00:13:02.639 --> 00:13:05.679 And so who exactly is this Jesus? 00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:08.480 This is God with us. 00:13:09.919 --> 00:13:17.440 Jesus, fully God, fully man, deity, humanity, and then history. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:23.360 Jesus died by a Roman crucifixion. 00:13:23.759 --> 00:13:31.679 The creed continues, says he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, and died, and was buried. 00:13:32.799 --> 00:13:41.440 All four Gospels speak to the literal historical death of Jesus. 00:13:41.679 --> 00:13:55.519 The early writings of the uh New Testament writers, the Apostle Paul, we have all the writings within the same lifetime of those who witnessed these events. 00:13:55.679 --> 00:14:00.879 In fact, extra biblical sources, Josephus talks about Jesus of Nazareth. 00:14:01.200 --> 00:14:08.000 Tacitus actually confirms that it was Pontius Pilate who indeed oversaw the execution of Jesus. 00:14:08.080 --> 00:14:11.440 Even Pliny speaks of Jesus. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:13.679 And see, it's history. 00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:26.720 Jesus isn't a legend or a myth or a fairy tale or one of these, you know, things that like you just have to throw your brain out to somehow believe. 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:31.039 It's rooted and anchored in history. 00:14:31.279 --> 00:14:33.279 In fact, I like how H. 00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:33.519 G. 00:14:33.679 --> 00:14:35.919 Wells, famous historian, author, said it. 00:14:36.080 --> 00:14:47.519 Said, I'm a historian, I'm not a believer, but I must confess, as a historian, that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the center of history. 00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:53.120 Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all of history. 00:14:53.360 --> 00:14:55.759 In fact, we actually divide time. 00:14:56.320 --> 00:14:58.879 We're in the year 2020. 00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:03.840 And we divide all of time by his life. 00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:11.600 You know, the year 2020 AD or ano domini, the year of our Lord, is what it means in Latin. 00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:13.039 Now we changed it. 00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:22.000 It's B C E before Common Era and C E Common Era, but it used to be B C before Christ and A D Ano Domini. 00:15:22.480 --> 00:15:24.639 And so he is deity. 00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:27.279 Jesus is Lord God. 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:29.919 He is humanity. 00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:34.320 He's fully human, fully God, rooted in history. 00:15:34.559 --> 00:15:41.759 He died by Roman crucifixion, but the story does not end there. 00:15:42.639 --> 00:15:44.000 Who exactly is Jesus? 00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:45.279 He's our victory. 00:15:45.600 --> 00:15:50.480 Jesus defeated the grave and is alive. 00:15:51.519 --> 00:15:58.799 Goes on and says that he descended into hell or into the realm of the dead. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:04.159 On the third day, he rose again from the dead. 00:16:04.559 --> 00:16:17.679 Jesus experienced death as humans experienced death, and his body lay in a grave, and his spirit went to the realm of the dead. 00:16:17.919 --> 00:16:28.320 In fact, 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul says, and if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless, and so is your faith. 00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:37.360 If he died and he didn't come back to life, it doesn't matter what he said, it doesn't matter what he claimed, it's useless and empty. 00:16:37.519 --> 00:16:50.720 But then he goes, but if Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep, for since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 00:16:50.879 --> 00:16:55.120 And then later on he'd go, This death has been swallowed up in victory. 00:16:55.200 --> 00:16:55.840 I love that. 00:16:56.080 --> 00:17:00.159 Where, O death, is your victory, where O death is your sting? 00:18:06.640 --> 00:18:08.319 Who exactly is Jesus? 00:18:08.480 --> 00:18:13.759 The deity, the humanity, the history, the victory of Jesus. 00:18:14.079 --> 00:18:19.359 And because he defeated the grave, then we see the sovereignty of Jesus. 00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:22.720 That Jesus is Lord of all. 00:18:24.720 --> 00:18:28.079 Not Lord of some, not Lord of parts, but Lord of all. 00:18:28.240 --> 00:18:29.920 The creed continues on. 00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:41.039 He says, He ascended into heaven and seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 00:18:41.440 --> 00:18:46.799 That he has all authority and all power and all dominion. 00:18:47.440 --> 00:18:56.799 The way Jesus explained it to his disciples before he ascended to the right hand of the Father is what's known as the Great Commission. 00:18:56.960 --> 00:19:06.720 And he says this in Matthew 28, verse 18 all authority has been given to me, all dominion, all power has been given to me. 00:19:06.880 --> 00:19:14.079 Therefore, then you go and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:19:15.279 --> 00:19:19.519 And command teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded. 00:19:19.680 --> 00:19:20.000 Why? 00:19:20.160 --> 00:19:21.680 Because He's Lord. 00:19:22.079 --> 00:19:33.519 In Colossians 2, verse 9, it says this way for in Christ all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form. 00:19:33.599 --> 00:19:36.559 And in Christ you have been brought to fullness. 00:19:40.640 --> 00:20:09.839 And if you just flip back a couple pages into Philippians, speaking of Christ, it says, Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. 00:20:12.400 --> 00:20:23.039 Fooly God, fully man, suffered and died by Roman crucifixion. 00:20:24.240 --> 00:20:33.119 Rose from the grave and is alive, and as a result, he is Lord of all. 00:20:34.880 --> 00:20:41.200 You know, we talk about Lord, Jesus being Lord, but what does that really mean? 00:20:41.359 --> 00:20:48.160 Well, it means that there is no other allegiance or loyalties other than him. 00:20:49.839 --> 00:21:00.559 See what it means is if he indeed rose from the grave, if he indeed is not just a good man, he is the God man and is alive in all authority and power. 00:21:00.880 --> 00:21:07.279 It means that all that he said is true, all that he did is to bring life and hope. 00:21:08.240 --> 00:21:21.839 And so for us as a believer, as a follower of Jesus, it means following Jesus is the most important thing about me. 00:21:22.880 --> 00:21:25.519 That I'm a Christian, I'm a Jesus follower. 00:21:26.480 --> 00:21:33.039 And that informs everything, that informs my identity, that informs every reality. 00:21:33.680 --> 00:21:38.640 See, it's Jesus ahead of your politics. 00:21:39.599 --> 00:21:46.720 It's Jesus ahead of your sexuality or your gender. 00:21:47.759 --> 00:21:58.640 It's Jesus and his way, and going, You're Lord, and you're my loyalty and my affection. 00:21:58.880 --> 00:21:59.599 In Galatians 2. 00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:05.200 20, the Apostle Paul would say it this way: I've been crucified with Christ. 00:22:05.440 --> 00:22:06.799 And I no longer live. 00:22:06.880 --> 00:22:08.640 It's Christ who lives in me. 00:22:08.720 --> 00:22:15.359 And the life I live, I live by faith in the Son of God who gave his life for me. 00:22:15.839 --> 00:22:17.599 And the question for you. 00:22:18.319 --> 00:22:23.759 And the question for me is the same question that Jesus asked Peter. 00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:27.599 Who do you say Jesus is? 00:22:29.119 --> 00:22:36.079 You know, Peter in that moment, he spoke it out with such confidence. 00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:46.160 And then you just gotta imagine when Jesus died, he wondered, and I wonder if I was wrong. 00:22:46.400 --> 00:22:51.440 I wonder if you really were the Messiah, if you really were the Son of God. 00:22:52.720 --> 00:22:58.720 And then he saw the risen Jesus. 00:22:59.680 --> 00:23:09.359 See, he didn't go around proclaiming an idea, or hey, I had a dream, or I had a thought, or this is a nice idea. 00:23:10.240 --> 00:23:16.799 There was over 500 eyewitnesses who saw Jesus and they proclaimed what they saw. 00:23:16.960 --> 00:23:20.960 They were called witnesses because they saw Jesus and he just couldn't help it. 00:23:21.039 --> 00:23:35.119 And he said, You are Lord, and I'm given my entire life for you, even to the point of dying by the cross in following after Jesus. 00:23:35.839 --> 00:23:48.319 Now, I think for some, as we wrestle with that, what if God really became one of us? 00:23:49.359 --> 00:23:52.640 Our response is just worship and remembering. 00:23:53.119 --> 00:23:57.839 Because you at one point said, Yes, I believe in Jesus. 00:23:58.079 --> 00:24:10.880 And in maybe the season and maybe the events, and maybe life has just knocked some things out of you, and once more you are shifting your attention, your affection, you're going, okay, you are fully God, fully man. 00:24:10.960 --> 00:24:12.799 You came and died for me, you loved me. 00:24:12.880 --> 00:24:16.960 Oh my God, I'm running back to you, I'm turning to you. 00:24:17.200 --> 00:24:24.960 But there's others that maybe as you've thought about Jesus and you thought, who exactly is Jesus? 00:24:25.279 --> 00:24:28.319 You said, He's probably a good man. 00:24:28.720 --> 00:24:30.799 He has some good teachings. 00:24:31.680 --> 00:24:41.200 And even as I was speaking, there was something stirring, and there was just a little bit of a tension in your soul, and you're just like, I'm being drawn, and I'm not exactly sure what's going on. 00:24:41.359 --> 00:24:44.960 That's actually the spirit of God working inside of you. 00:24:45.200 --> 00:24:52.319 And as I was explaining who Jesus is, you want in your heart to say yes, and in this moment you can say yes. 00:24:53.440 --> 00:25:16.240 You know, John and uh a little bit later, a couple chapters on, John chapter three would say, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life, life now and forevermore. 00:25:16.799 --> 00:25:23.920 And Jesus would say it this way: I came that you might have life and life to the very full. 00:25:24.160 --> 00:25:42.400 And when you say yes to Jesus, when you say, I need you as my Savior and as my Lord, you're stepping into the fullest of humanity, the most joy complete that you will find freedom for the very first time. 00:25:42.799 --> 00:25:44.079 It's called life. 00:25:44.319 --> 00:25:52.720 And if that's what you want, if that's where you're at, would you just simply call upon Jesus right now in this moment?
